Hong Kong was watched by the world when it was reverted to the People Republic of China (PRC) on 1st July 1997. Hong Kong was a British colony that was an important world trading, financial, and transportation center. Under British rule, Hong Kong was capitalist in contrast to the PRC, a socialist country ruled by the Communist Party. In the 1980s, when the PRC decided to resume sovereignty over Hong Kong in 1997, the Chinese leaders created a new policy toward Hong Kong, called "one country, two systems". The policy meant that Hong Kong's system would remain unchanged for fifty years while the PRC would continue to be socialist after 1997. This thesis seeks to explore the PRC's development and application of united front work in the take over of Hong Kong. Chapter one examines the twin concepts of united front and "one country two systems" (chapter 1). Chapters 2 and 3 will examine how the Chinese used the united front in their successful handling of the Sino-British negotiations (chapter 2) and the drafting of the Hong Kong Basic Law (chapter 3). Chapter 4 analyses the implementation by the PRC of its Hong Kong policy through its agencies in Hong Kong after reaching the Sino-British agreement of 1984 (chapter 4), and how this process affected developments of politics (chapter 5), economics (chapter 6), and Hong Kong society as a whole (chapter 7). Chapter 8 (Conclusions) will assess the overall success of the PRC's use of united front work in its reunification policy.

This thesis was instigated through a consideration of the views held by many film scholars who predicted that the political handover that took place on the July 1 1997, whereby Hong Kong was returned to the sovereignty of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) from British colonial rule, would result in the “end” of Hong Kong cinema. From that day onwards, Hong Kong cinema would no longer enjoy its previously unfettered and uninhibited revolutionary creativity and the Hong Kong film industry could thereby be perceived as being “in crisis”. In considering whether these predictions have actually come to pass, this thesis sets out to focus on exploring representative Hong Kong filmmakers’ activities and performances following Hong Kong becoming a Special Administrative Region (SAR) of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) from 1997 onwards. The exploration of the chosen filmmakers’ activities and performances includes examining the filmmaking practices that they have embraced and analysing the exhibition and distribution patterns adopted by the films that they have produced. The intention is to examine to what extent the political transition has shaped these filmmakers’ filmmaking practices and to observe the characteristics exhibited by the distribution and exhibition aspects of the films since the handover in order to specify any connection they may have with the momentous political handover. This thesis intends to show how Hong Kong cinema has responded to the challenges of an age of transition and globalisation through in-depth analyses of the activities of these key industry personnel that have elevated Hong Kong cinema’s position of regional and global popularity, and the commercially and critically significant films that they have made, covering the wider spectrum of genre, including those of action, comedy, realistic, horror and romantic drama. It is the aim of this thesis to present a new perspective that contributes to the study of post-colonial Hong Kong cinema.

This dissertation has two objectives: one, to dispel the “myth” and assumption that China holds on to an “absolute” view of sovereignty, and has arguably acted in accordance to this view; and two, to forward an alternative view of sovereignty as seen through Beijing’s eyes. This dissertation argues that China’s sovereignty is one which flexibly accommodates, at times voluntarily concedes, different mix of de facto rights according to each respective context and issue. This is attributed to China’s historical experiences with the concept, as well as its discourses. When “sovereignty” was introduced into Chinese thinking, the result is a “view” of sovereignty which juxtaposed Chinese previous understanding of “supreme authority” with an interpretation of the Western concept of sovereignty. “Sovereignty,” in this view, is essentially a de jure construct as its de facto component (or “right of governance”) is purposely and effectively detached from the concept to serve the political needs of the regime. It thus approximates one grounded on graded rings of sovereignty, where authority emanates from the core, but each “level of sovereignty” is entrusted to exercise different “right of governance.” As long as no overt challenge is posed to the idea that a single, de jure sovereignty— more specifically understood as a nominal “supreme authority”—resides in Beijing, this Chinese view of sovereignty is upheld. A “light” constructivist approach which explores the relationship between norms, ideational structures, agency and “discursive formations” is applied to the case studies of Hong Kong (and Macao) and Taiwan to support the arguments in this dissertation. Chinese discourses on “sovereignty” were examined in details through analysing a large sample size of Chinese academic writings from 1980 till 2008, in addition to policy documents and announced official positions of the Chinese leadership. This is further augmented by analyses of Beijing’s policy behaviours towards, in particular, Hong Kong’s autonomy and Taiwan’s international space.

During World War II, the Army Air Force waged three strategic air offensives in and from China against Japan. At first, the Flying Tigers and 10th Air Force constituted the whole of American aid to China, but the effort soon expanded. Supported by Chiang Kai-shek, Claire Chennault and his 14th Air Force waged an anti-shipping campaign, to which the Japanese Imperial Army responded with Operation Ichigo and against which Joseph Stilwell accurately warned. 20th Bomber Command used B-29s to wage Operation Matterhorn, failed, and later conducted PACAID missions. 14th Air Force then waged a counterproductive transportation campaign as The Pacific War, also known as the Greater East Asian War, ended. Events in the China-Burma-India and China Theaters provide lessons in logistics, targeting, training, and air-ground cooperation that are applicable in the post-Cold War era.

Bilateral, multilateral and regional linkages between stock exchanges generate increased sources of funds, investor return and product choice. Such associations can also lower transaction costs in both initial listing and subsequent trading, increase liquidity more generally in the secondary market and enhance investor protection and confidence in the stability and reputation of the market and the status of companies listed on the market. This thesis argues that the integration of the stock markets between The Special Administrative Region of Hong Kong ("Hong Kong") and the People's Republic of China (CTRC) is therefore a desirable objective and investigates how a more successful and substantial degree of integration could be achieved in this area. Integration, in particular, requires harmonization of laws and regulations. In 1993,H shares issued by PRC companies were first allowed to cross-list on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. This listing was made possible by the introduction of a new set of legal and operational rules promulgated in both the PRC and Hong Kong. This thesis expounds four models of integration, the H Share Model, the System Harmonization Model, the Mixed Harmonization and Mutual Recognition Model, and the Full Harmonization Model and argues that H share regulations are an effective way to further integration despite problems inherited from the PRC's 'pre-open door' policy. In considering other potential models, the European Union and the United States capital market are also considered as potential models for further integration of the PRC and Hong Kong stock markets despite the inherent limitations of the latter model. It is also proposed that enhanced institutional support can be used as an effective means of accelerating the integration process. Investigating both the feasibility and possible implementation of market integration within an appropriate institutional framework ensures an autonomous, legal and independent environment separate from the political realm.

There are two main principles under which jurisdictions tax income – source and residence. The point of these two principles is to establish a ‘nexus’ or link between a taxable transaction, operation or activity and a taxing state. It is this nexus which is used to justify the imposition of taxation by the jurisdiction on a particular taxpayer. Where a taxpayer is a ‘resident’ of a jurisdiction, then that person often becomes liable to pay tax on income derived from all sources. Where a taxpayer is a ‘nonresident’ of a jurisdiction, then that person often becomes liable to pay tax on income derived from sources within a particular, relevant jurisdiction. The concept of source of income is fundamentally important to both Australia and Hong Kong. Australia adopts a worldwide tax system that taxes its residents on Australian and foreign income and non-residents on Australian income, whilst Hong Kong adopts a territorial tax system that forgoes taxing foreign income irrespective of who has derived it. The fundamental basis for taxation under a territorial tax system is the source of income; while the fundamental basis for taxation under a worldwide tax system is the concept of residence. In both jurisdictions, the decisions of the courts on the meaning of source have been crucial in defining the concept of ‘source of income’ for tax purposes. The foundations of source-based taxation are less stable today. There is no universal set of source rules that can readily be applied to every circumstance to determine the source or locality of profits. The growth in international trade, supported by the development of electronic commerce, has substantially increased source-related revenue risks. Entities are increasingly able to structure their finances and conduct their affairs without being constrained by geography or national boundaries. Anticipated profits may be shifted to a related party and from one jurisdiction to another to arrive at a reduced overall tax burden. It is becoming increasingly difficult to determine from what and where income originates. The thesis examines the nature of the current source rules in Australia and Hong Kong and analyses the fundamental adequacy of the source principle generally when confronted, especially, with the challenge of rapidly growing Internet-based commercial activities. Australia and Hong Kong have been chosen for comparative study for the following reasons: the two jurisdictions are good examples of small-medium advanced economies; they are similar in the sense that they are, primarily, knowledge capital-importing jurisdictions; their approaches to ‘source’ differ markedly; and these approaches tend towards each end of the ‘source spectrum’. The thesis identifies certain principal research questions. The basic responses to these questions are: The concept of source of income is, essentially, less clear today in the domestic tax law of Australia and Hong Kong than before. Determining the source of income in Australia and Hong Kong can be a very complex issue. The difficulty related to making such determinations is growing. Searching for the real source of income has become still more problematic with the increase in globalisation and the rapid growth of Internet-based commerce. The traditional concept of source of income has ‘lost traction’ as a fundamental basis for effectively imposing income taxation, especially, in today’s globalised economy. Existing source rules do not deal adequately with certain ‘revenue-leakage’ issues confronting us today and, even more, the likely issues of tomorrow. We need to reconsider how we can better address these issues. The thesis establishes that this is so for Australia and Hong Kong. It also reasons that this proposition generally holds true for most developed tax jurisdictions. The thesis concludes with a detailed review of three of the most prominent optional approaches for addressing the source challenge: (A) a move to a new refundable withholding-tax-based method of taxing cross-border electronic commerce; (B) a shift to far greater reliance on the use of the residence principle of taxation; and (C) a shift to notably greater reliance on (indirect) consumption taxation. Option C, it is argued, offers the best prospects for dealing in the least bad way with the identified issues.

Pre-contractual material disclosure and representation from an insurance policy proposer is the most important element for insurers to make a decision on whether a proposer is insurable and what are the terms and conditions if the proposal by the proposer is able to be insured. The issue this thesis researches and investigates focus on the issues related to the pre-contractual non-disclosures and misrepresentations of an insured under the principle of utmost good faith, by operation of laws, can achieve with different results in different jurisdiction. A similar disputed claim involving material non-disclosed personal information or misrepresentation at the pre-contractual stage from an insured with respect to both general and life insurance policies settled by an insurer in Australia could be that the policy is set aside ab initio by the insurers in Singapore or China. The jurisdictions this thesis examines are • Australia; • Singapore; and • China including Hong Kong.

Internet already is an important part of many people’s common life. By using internet, tourism authorities could provide good images of a destination to tourists and help foreign tourists to make decisions to visit the destination in order to promote tourism. The purpose of this study aimed to realize and compare the destination images prsented on Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Singapore’s official tourism websites. The method of content analysis was used in this stuey. The software of Scrapbook and CATPAC II was used to obtain the context of words and pictures on websites as well as analyze the obtained data respectively. The results indicate that about culinary tourism, Taiwan’s official tourism website strongly provides images of night markets and snacks to tourists. Comparing with Hong Kong and Singapore’s official websites, the official website of Taiwan may need to pay more attention on the introduction of Taiwan’s non-Chinese restaurants. About the introduction of tourism attractions, Taiwan’s official website clearly introduces the natural environment and special culture all over Taiwan. However, the introduction of well-known attractions, such as Taroco Gorge and Taipei 101, seems not well-mentioned. About shopping, Taiwan’s official website basically introduces the traditional business areas and department stores in Taipei city. About the part of festivals and events, Taiwan’s official website introduces a lot of Chinese festivals and Taiwanese local festivals. However, the event such as 2011 Taipei Flora Expo was not well-described. This study suggests the Taiwan Tourism Bureau could put different context on different language versions of its tourism website in order to meet the variety needs of tourists from different countries.

Resumo:
This dissertation, The Work, Lifestyles and Domination of Chinese Migrant Garment Workers, reveals three major changes in the circumstances of the migrant working class in south China over the past two decades, from historical and comparative perspectives -- the rise of a male migrant working population in the export industry sector, a notable shift in the material and social lives of migrant industrial workers, and the emergence of a new factory regime in the export industries that relies increasingly on non-coercive modes of domination over the factory workforce. By carrying out on-site fieldwork regarding Hong Kong-invested garment factories in south China, Hong Kong and southern Vietnam, as well as factory-gate surveys of workers in China and Vietnam, the study examines how and why the circumstances of the workers in these different localities are dissimilar even when under the same type of factory ownership. In analysing workers' lives within and outside factories, as well as tracing the expansion of global capitalism in East and Southeast Asia, the dissertation not only seeks to contribute to research on the politics of production and everyday life practice, but also to an understanding of how global and local forces interact.
