Resumo:
This article develops a Christian ethics of child-rearing that addresses the plight of children in the United States today. It seeks greater clarity on what Christians should view as child-rearing's larger meaning and purpose, as well as the responsibilities this meaning and purpose impose on parents, communities, churches, and the state. The article first explores three major but quite distinct models of child-rearing ethics in the Christian tradition—those of Thomas Aquinas, John Calvin, and Friedrich Schleiermacher—and then proposes a new “critical covenant” that appropriates these traditions, in conjunction with feminist and liberationist critiques, into a publicly meaningful Christian ethics of child-rearing for today.

Gadgets like mobile, iPad and other electronic devices are a necessary evil in the modern world. These electronic devices have many advantages in the day-to-day life of human and it is a boon in terms of knowledge transfer to all age groups in a very short span of time. It has its own disadvantages and when recklessly used causes very many ill effects for the mankind. The global pandemic of Covid 19 since the year 2020 has made these gadgets available and usable for all age groups. Children are the major users and have no other option except to use these gadgets. This causes addiction in these young little minds and has a huge physical, mental and social ill health. The only way that this can be minimized though not prevented is by the way of customizing the nurturing pattern and added parental responsibilities. Parents they themselves are over worked with gadgets due to pandemic it becomes an utmost need to modify the nurturing practices to prevent gadget addiction in their children.

Child-rearing is an individualist, social and cultural process. This paper proposes that Child-Rearing has invariable characteristics and huge diversity. It has been considered that cultural perspective may contribute to the understanding of such multiple forms of child-rearing. The present paper provides an analytical account of dominant factors of child-rearing and caring. The factors selection is done by reviewing the articles which have either more than 50 Google scholar citations or are indexed in top-class journals. It also aims to ascertain whether or not Indian child-rearing intrinsically has something different in its practices and which child-rearing patterns are global and common among all the countries. This article took majorly dominating factors in the area of child-rearing and provided a qualitative comparative account of India especially in relation to the world. Some factors are individualistic as parental attitude and the parent-child relationship. But the study found that corporal punishments, socialization and cultural factors have a strong impact on child-rearing. Altogether these factors affect the cognitive skills of children. The study will give a critical overview of child-rearing patterns in India and across the globe, which would be helpful for policymakers to create new policies and act accordingly.

Clarifying the transition to motherhood based on the experience of mothers receiving continuity of child-rearing support is expected to promote the transition, and enhance nursing support. This study clarifies the transition process by which mothers recognize and adapt to new roles with continuity of child-rearing support in Japan. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 13 mothers who received continuity of child-rearing support. Directed content analysis based on Meleis’s Transition Theory was used to analyze the results and define a framework for analyzing the transition. A theoretical framework was identified based on the Transition Theory themes. Engagement in terms of proactive involvement in pregnancy, childbirth, and child-rearing was a transition property. Maintaining the mother’s well-being, building new relationships and connections, and reflecting on child-rearing in the community were transition conditions. For patterns of response, the process indicators comprised having a sense of connection with the community and reflecting on one’s child-rearing objectively. Increased readiness for child-rearing and identity re-shaping were outcome indicators. The results suggest that it is important to enhance mothers’ readiness for child-rearing for transition to motherhood, and to promote the reshaping of their identities through continuity of support from pregnancy to postpartum child-rearing.

Resumo:
In this study, two approaches of complexity of maternal thinking were examined: Newberger’s(1980) analysis of reasoning complexity, and Vallacher and Wegner’s (1985) analysis of action complexity, that was adapted to the parenting ” eld. Measures for action complexity and for maternal behaviours were derived from hypothetical child-rearing situations and from mother-child observed interactions. Links between reasoning and action complexity to child-rearing actions and to sources, such as socioeconomic status (SES) were explored in a Spanish sample of 60 mothers with a child 7 to 10 years old. Moreover, it was proposed that the relation between SES and maternal child-rearing behaviour was mediated by either form of complexity. A LISREL model for the hypothetical situations showed that the influence of SES on less positive child rearing was only mediated by Reasoning complexity, whereas Action complexity showed an independent path to positive child-rearing behaviour. A LISREL model for the observed situations showed that both maternal reasoning complexity and action complexity played an equivalent mediating role between maternal SES and negative child-rearing behaviour. The theoretical and methodological implications of both aspects of complexity to the analysis of child-rearing behaviour were discussed.

Resumo:
Background: Customs and traditions are strictly followed in many Indian families, both rural and urban. Certain established child rearing practices are being advocated by elders and are being followed traditionally even today. Many of these practices play a significant role in causing pneumonia in children. This study was undertaken to compare and assess the clinical features and outcome of pneumonia occurring in children with traditional rearing practices and in infants without traditional child rearing practices and various factors influencing them. Methods: The present study is a prospective case control study, done in the department of paediatrics, Al-Ameen Medical College and Hospital Vijayapura, in which a total of 220 infants with clinical and/or radiological signs of pneumonia were enrolled during the period of March 2022 to February 2023. Results: 73 out of 220 infants (33%) with pneumonia had history of traditional child rearing practices. Demographic factors like combined families, young and illiterate mothers, lower socioeconomic status, domiciliary deliveries were found to be statistically significant. Increased clinical severity and prolonged outcome (60.4%) and complications (42.5%) were found to be more in pneumonia in infants associated with traditional child rearing practices. Conclusions: This study showed increased clinical severity and prolonged outcome and more complications of pneumonia in infants associated with traditional child rearing practices. High mortality (7.5%) was also seen. Most common traditional child rearing practices influencing outcome in infants are oil bath and blowing into the nose. Thus there is an urgent need to systematically study the utility, futility and possible dangers of a large number of traditional child rearing practices followed in infants.

Objective. To determine which child-rearing practices are associated with nursing caries. Design. Cross-sectional study. Setting. Hospital-based general pediatric clinic. Participants. Sequential sample of 110 healthy children aged 18 to 36 months. Outcome measures. Feeding practices of children, limit-setting issues, and familial dental health were determined by maternal interview. Nursing caries were diagnosed by dental examination. Results. Nursing caries were found in 22 (20%) of the children. Ninety percent of children with and without caries were bottle-feeding at 12 and 18 months of age. Ninety-one percent of children with caries and 84% without were still drinking a nighttime bottle at 18 months (P = .33). The mothers of children with caries were found to have fewer years of education, 8.9 vs 10.8 years (P = .02), and were more likely to have eight or more cavities, 55% vs 19% (P = .002). More infants in the caries group had been breast-fed, 72% vs 46% (P = .02), although length of breast-feeding was similar, 5.4 vs 6.7 months. Fewer children with caries drank fluoridated tap water 27% vs 54% (P = .05), but there were no differences in topical fluoride use, dental hygiene practices, or visits to the dentist. Conclusions. These findings fail to substantiate a straightforward relationship between child-rearing practices and nursing caries and suggest that well-designed prospective studies are need to clarify the etiology of early caries.

Most foreign women living and working in Japan, while raising multicultural children, may find it challenging to manage their roles as caregivers and cultural and linguistic transmitters while pursuing their professional goals. In a patriarchal society, where more old-fashioned expectations of women prevail, foreign working mothers must endeavor to navigate their way not only culturally and linguistically but also professionally. The aim of this study is to explore foreign working mothers’ efforts across their multiple roles in Japan. Data obtained via questionnaires consisting of qualitative and quantitative items from working foreign women practicing multicultural child-rearing were scrutinized and statistically analyzed to provide a rich understanding of the participants’ experiences. Findings outline the challenges they face in tending to their roles and responsibilities and the strategies they adopt to deal with the challenges experienced. The authors further canvass and discuss the societal and familial factors that have contributed to their journeys.
