Dormant, intact crowns were used to determine the cold hardiness of the herbaceous perennial Heuchera sanguinea `Chatterbox'. Crowns were placed in moist cheesecloth, wrapped in aluminum foil, and subjected to -4,-6,-8,-10,-12,-14, -16, or -18C in a programmable freezer. Regrowth quality ratings and dry-mass measurement decreased linearly with temperature. No regrowth was evident from any crown exposed to -12C or lower temperatures. Freezing dormant plant crowns proved an efficient and reliable technique for estimating cold hardiness of Heuchera `Chatterbox'.

This research paper investigates the impact of Urban Living Labs (ULLs) on social resilience within urban communities, with a specific focus on the Multicultural City ChatterBox project in Portsmouth, the UK. Drawing on a rich body of literature and empirical data collected through ethnographic research methods, including interviews, focus groups, and participant observations, this study explores how participatory placemaking and co-creation activities foster community resilience. The ChatterBox project, a collaborative effort between the local community and researchers, led to the construction of a temporary timber pavilion in an underutilized urban space, serving as a vibrant hub for social interaction and engagement among diverse community groups. Our findings reveal that ULLs significantly contribute to enhancing social resilience by empowering communities, fostering a sense of belonging, and facilitating the development of social networks. Through the process of co-design and co-creation, participants not only gained a deeper understanding and ownership of their urban environment but also developed valuable skills and knowledge, thus strengthening their capacity to adapt to societal challenges. Furthermore, this study highlights the role of ULLs in bridging gaps between different community groups, thereby promoting inclusivity and social cohesion. The Multicultural City ChatterBox project exemplifies how ULL interventions can serve as catalysts for social innovation, offering flexible and adaptive solutions to urban challenges while simultaneously enriching the social fabric of cities. This paper contributes to the growing discourse on urban resilience, placemaking, and community-led urban development, providing valuable insights for policymakers, urban planners, and community organizers seeking to foster resilient and vibrant urban communities.

Chatterbox Challenge is an annual web-based contest for artificial conversational systems, ACE. The 2010 instantiation was the tenth consecutive contest held between March and June in the 60th year following the publication of Alan Turing’s influential disquisition ‘computing machinery and intelligence’. Loosely based on Turing’s viva voca interrogator-hidden witness imitation game, a thought experiment to ascertain a machine’s capacity to respond satisfactorily to unrestricted questions, the contest provides a platform for technology comparison and evaluation. This paper provides an insight into emotion content in the entries since the 2005 Chatterbox Challenge. The authors find that synthetic textual systems, none of which are backed by academic or industry funding, are, on the whole and more than half a century since Weizenbaum’s natural language understanding experiment, little further than Eliza in terms of expressing emotion in dialogue. This may be a failure on the part of the academic AI community for ignoring the Turing test as an engineering challenge.

In the AI field of language learning, chatterbots are an interesting area for language learning and practice. This research investigates Arabic EFL vocabulary learning using an interactive storytelling chatterbot. A chatterbot was created and equipped with four vocabulary tools: a dictionary, images, an L1 translation tool, and a concordancer. The target words were enhanced by these tools to provide the learners with interactive comprehensible input. This project seeks to identify which tools are mostly used when EFL learners are practicing English with a chatterbot. It also seeks to determine which tool could help most in vocabulary learning as well as retention. The results of the study indicate that the dictionary is the most favoured and effective tool for vocabulary learning. For retention, the findings uncover that L1 translation is slightly (but insignificantly) higher than the dictionary.

Chatterbots have been widely used as a tool for conversational booking assistance mainly for hotels such as the Expedia. This paper extends the use of chatterbot beyond booking by presenting the proof of concept of a chatterbot expert system called the VIZARD. The proposed VIZARD is developed using an expert system shell called verbot. The core of Vertbot 5 is the natural language processing (NLP) engine based on pattern matching. The core Verbot 5 engine is responsible for finding matches to a given user input string and firing the appropriate rule. The findings from the user acceptance test concluded that majority of the respondents agreed that the VIZARD expert system stands at an unbiased state while being more aligned on supporting the usefulness of the system.

PurposeTo assess changes in advertising the British children’s annual,Chatterbox, over the first three decades of the twentieth century.Design/methodology/approachThe products/firms involved were identified and the advertisements classified into product groups. The advertising content was examined in terms of the intended audience and the five longest-running advertisements were analysed to gauge trends at the single-product level. Attention was also given to long-term changes at the product-group level, the effects of the Great War and the roles of the publisher, editor and advertisers.FindingsIn total, 457 advertisements were documented over 1900-1930 representing about 80 different products/firms. They were classified into 10 distinctive groupings with Food Ingredients, at almost 26 per cent of the total, being the most abundant. Overwhelmingly, the advertisements were directed at middle-class women/mothers (∼75 per cent of the total), then children (∼15 per cent) with men/fathers essentially being ignored. The five longest-running advertisements (over 25 per cent of the total) showed little evidence of change but there were significant trends at the product-group level, in marketing to children and in average advertisement size, particularly during the last two decades of the study period, partially reflecting gradual social and technological changes.Originality/valueComprehensive quantitative analysis of advertising in children’s magazine literature over several decades is problematic because of the difficulty in accessing sufficient source material. The present study is exhaustive and establishes a reference point for the assessment of advertising in similar publications in the post-Victorian era.

The paper deals with the personal names attested as parts of oikonyms (settlement names) and microtoponyms of South (Olonets) Karelia where most of the population in the last few centuries speaks the Livvik dialect of the Karelian language. According to the author’s statistics, more than 60% of the settlement names in the Livvik area are of anthroponymic origin, which explains the focus of research. Based on the studied oikonyms and microtoponyms, the author identifies three main groups of human naming: anthroponyms of Balto-Fennic origin, non-Christian names of Russian origin, Christian names and their forms. Within the first group, particular mention is made of the names that relate to the ancient Balto-Fennic “faunistic” tradition (village Hukkal < Hukka ‘Wolf’, village Kurrenselgy < Kurgi ‘Crane’, etc.); the names that characterize a person in terms of physical condition, behavior, social status (v. Keikkul < Keikku ‘Lame’, v. Hörpäl < Hörppö ‘Chatterbox’, v. Herranselgy < Herra ‘Rich Man’, etc.); personal names with negative semantics (v. Kel’l’ul < Kel’l’u ‘Scoundrel’, v. Tahtahal < Tahtas ‘Fool’, etc.). The second group includes a number of non-Christian names of Russian origin that once existed in South Karelia, reconstructed based on the toponymic material (*Gorb < v. Gorbal, *Zhdan < v. Ždianu, *Rubets < v. Rubčoilu, etc.). In some cases, Karelian Livviks could have two “Russian” names, from which the author carefully assumes that at least in the 16th–17th centuries, there was a tradition to give the child a double name: a Christian calendar name and an everyday non-Christian Russian name. The third largest group includes rare Karelian forms of Christian names, including female ones, reflected in the toponymy of the region. The appendix lists all forms of Christian names reconstructed by the author based on oikonymy and microtoponymy of Olonets Karelia.

This article considers how the 18th-century poet Thomas Chatterton created literary worlds by examining and revealing the connections between four very different areas in which he terra-formed: mediaevalism, political satire, anti-slavery poetry, and environmentalism. Although these areas of Chattertons writing are usually treated separately by critics, the article argues that they in fact share many common features, and between them characterise Chattertons distinctive if extraordinarily precocious poetic voices. These shared characteristics have, moreover, been brought into sharp relief by pressing current issues, from the traumas of the pandemic to the debates on the commemoration (and misrepresentation) of historical figures such as Edward Colston and indeed Chatterton himself. The article concludes by showing how readers can find in the poetry of Thomas Chatterton not only an unexpected influence on some of the major cultural touchstones of the 21st century, but contemporary significance and relevance through the consolation of literature.

AbstractA well-preserved fauna of largely articulated trilobites is described from three new localities close to one another in the Bull River Valley, southeastern British Columbia. All the trilobites from these localities are from the lower or middle part of the Wujiajiania lyndasmithae Subzone of the Elvinia Zone, lower Jiangshanian, in the McKay Group. Two new species are proposed with types from these localities: Aciculolenus askewi and Cliffia nicoleae. The trilobite (and agnostid) fauna from these localities includes at least 20 species: Aciculolenus askewi n. sp., Agnostotes orientalis (Kobayashi, 1935), Cernuolimbus ludvigseni Chatterton and Gibb, 2016, Cliffia nicoleae n. sp., Elvinia roemeri (Shumard, 1861), Grandagnostus? species 1 of Chatterton and Gibb, 2016, Eugonocare? phillipi Chatterton and Gibb, 2016, Eugonocare? sp. A, Housia vacuna (Walcott, 1912), Irvingella convexa (Kobayashi, 1935), Irvingella flohri Resser, 1942, Irvingella species B Chatterton and Gibb, 2016, Olenaspella chrisnewi Chatterton and Gibb, 2016, Proceratopyge canadensis (Chatterton and Ludvigsen, 1998), Proceratopyge rectispinata (Troedsson, 1937), Pseudagnostus cf. P. josepha (Hall, 1863), Pseudagnostus securiger (Lake, 1906), Pseudeugonocare bispinatum (Kobayashi, 1962), Pterocephalia sp., and Wujiajiania lyndasmithae Chatterton and Gibb, 2016. Pseudagnostus securiger, a widespread early Jiangshanian species, has not been previously recorded from southeastern British Columbia. Non-trilobite fossils collected from these localities include brachiopods, rare trace fossils, a complete silica sponge (Hyalospongea), and a dendroid graptolite. The faunas from these localities are more diverse and better preserved than those from other previously documented localities of the same age in the region.Additional specimens of a rare species, found by amateur collectors in previously documented localities of slightly younger age (upper part of Wujiajiania lyndasmithae Subzone) in the same region, are documented. These new specimens, when combined with an earlier discovered specimen, provide adequate type material to propose a new species of Labiostria, L. gibbae, which may be useful for biostratigraphy.UUID:http://zoobank.org/89551eac-b3af-4b2b-8ef3-7c2e106a560d

Odontopleura (Odontopleura) arctica, a new species of odontopleurine trilobite, is described from the Canadian Arctic. A method of cladistic analysis is detailed. Parsimony analysis should be performed treating all characters as unordered. The universe of directed trees implied by the resulting rootless network(s) can then be examined and a preferred tree selected by a criterion of congruency. Namely, the most parsimonious directed tree that accommodates the most congruent arrangement of character-states should be taken as the preferred cladogram. Since this is essentially a general congruency method operating within the constraints of parsimony, it is termed “constrained congruency.” The method is applied to the genus Odontopleura, resulting in the recognition of two major species groups, the nominate subgenus and Sinespinaspis n. subgen. Odontopleura (Ivanopleura) dufrenoyi Barrande is tentatively included in the genus, but considered too poorly known for cladistic analysis. Species assigned to Odontopleura (Odontopleura) include Odontopleura ovata Emmrich, Odontopleura brevigena Chatterton and Perry, Odontopleura (Odontopleura) arctica n. sp., and Diacanthaspis serotina Apollonov. Species assigned to Sinespinaspis n. subgen. include Taemasaspis llandoveryana Šnajdr, Odontopleura greenwoodi Chatterton and Perry, Odontopleura maccallai Chatterton and Perry, and Odontopleura nehedensis Chatterton and Perry. Odontopleura bombini Chatterton and Perry is tentatively placed in synonymy with Odontopleura nehedensis. The genus had a wide distribution throughout the Early and Middle Silurian, due to preferences for deep-water, distal shelf or shelf-slope transition zone habitats.

Abstract Skin cancer has become a great concern for people's wellness. With the popularization of machine learning, a considerable amount of data about skin cancer has been created. However, applications on the market featuring skin cancer diagnosis have barely utilized the data. In this paper, we have designed a web application to diagnose skin cancer with the CNN model and Chatterbot API. First, the application allows the user to upload an image of the user's skin. Next, a CNN model is trained with a huge amount of pre-taken images to make predictions about whether the skin is affected by skin cancer, and if the answer is yes, which kind of skin cancer the uploaded image can be classified. Last, a chatbot using the Chatterbot API is trained with hundreds of answers and questions asked and answered on the internet to interact with and give feedback to the user based on the information provided by the CNN model. The application has achieved significant performance in making classifications and has acquired the ability to interact with users. The CNN model has reached an accuracy of 0.95 in making classifications, and the chatbot can answer more than 100 questions about skin cancer. We have also done a great job on connecting the backend based on the CNN model as well as the Chatterbot API and the frontend based on the VUE Javascript framework.

Information technology can be applied to all fields, including tourism. Tourism object information media can be implemented into the chatbot system to make the information search process more flexible. Currently, searching for tourist spot information is often done manually; this makes tourist information services limited in time, while the need for tourism information must always be available. This research aims to build a chatbot system using Artificial Intelligence Markup Language (AIML) and ChatterBot methods. Both methods are accessed from libraries in Python using input in the form of natural language that has been processed into certain patterns. The pattern determination process is carried out by classifying a collection of questions on the chatbot using the Support Vector Machines (SVM) method. Then the classification is divided into five attributes, namely address, ticket price, facilities, description, and access. The SVM model built obtained an accuracy rate of 88%. Based on the testing results on both models that have been tested, the approach with AIML results in an accuracy rate in answering questions correctly of 90%, while ChatterBot is 40%.

By using Rogers’s theory (1983), this research aims to know the process of adopting innovation occurred in the Telkomsel customers toward Line Chatterbot Mobile Messenger. Another purpose of this research is tried to find out the differences of adoption process from generation X, millennial, and generation Z as well as describe each of the adopter category characteristics. The method used is case study with qualitative approach using Focus Group Discussion technique. The results then reveal that the adoption process has little bit differences with Rogers’s theory. The differences are found in several steps including knowledge steps, experiment steps, decision steps, and confirmation steps. Furthermore, this research is also found out new concepts namely passive adopter which is defined as adopter that prefers using innovation as alternative choices.

The evaluation of subjective aspects of HCI, such as human-likeness, likeability or users' emotions towards computers is still quite a neglected issue, especially in the field of non-task oriented conversational systems (chatterbots). In this paper we try to bridge this gap by proposing a new methodology of evaluation. The methods presented were tested in our research on humor-equipped chatterbots. We describe them in details, discuss their drawbacks and usability. In one of the presented methods we used an emotiveness analysis system, which itself can be considered an AI tool, as it was used to detect users' emotions towards conversational systems, and to perform their automatic evaluation. We also propose some methods that we have not used yet, which, however, seem applicable in this field, such as brain scanning techniques. Finally, we give some ideas that should be addressed in the future.
