Widor, Charles-Marie. Symphonie V. Editado por John R. Near. A-R Editions, 2007. http://dx.doi.org/10.31022/n015.

Charles-Marie Widor continued to develop the genre of the organ symphony in his second set of four works, published as Symphonies pour orgue, opus 42 (1878–87). The introduction to this edition of Widor's Symphonie V includes a list of the sources, a statement of editorial policies, and information about Widor's registrations. Symphonie V in F Minor seems to have been one of Widor's favorites, as he often performed it complete. The work is in five movements, including the famous Toccata finale. Had Widor composed no other organ music, this symphony alone would have assured him a permanent place in the repertoire. (Revised 2nd edition.)

When Arnautoff’’s student visa was expiring, Stackpole arranged an introduction to Diego Rivera, and Victor, Lydia, and their two sons spent 1929-1931 in Mexico. There Arnatuoff assisted Rivera at the Cortés Palace in Cuernavaca and the National Palace in Mexico City and encountered both the PCM (Mexican Communist Party) and Rivera’s idiosyncratic version of communism. In 1930, Rivera went to San Francisco to paint murals there, leaving Arnautoff in charge at the National Palace. Ione Robinson’s letters provide information both about life in Mexico City and about Arnautoff. In 1931, the family returned to the US as permanent residents eligible for citizenship.

The responsibility to protect (R2P) and the question of UN Security Council veto constraint are intimately linked, but whilst the R2P has become increasingly embedded in diplomatic discourse and practice, the idea that in relation to it the Council’s five permanent members should recognize a ‘responsibility not to veto’ (RN2V) has fared less well. This chapter examines why this should be so. In its assessment of the prospects for, and pros and cons of, veto-restriction, the chapter argues that opposition amongst the P5 to the idea of a RN2V is unlikely to change in the foreseeable future, and it charges advocates of the idea with a failure to recognize that it is ill-conceived to believe that R2P can transcend great power cleavages in international society, whether these stem from principles of prudence, conflicting value systems, or the play of self-interest and great power jockeying for position.

Data from three early European-sponsored colonies in North America indicate that changes in animal use occurred quickly. Over half of the meat from vertebrate sources in a Spanish assemblage associated with the first permanent European settlement on the Atlantic coast (Florida) and a French assemblage from the northern coast of the Gulf of Mexico near Mobile (Alabama) are from local, wild animals. The English assemblage associated with Charles Towne (South Carolina) reflects the rapid development of a short-lived cattle industry. Early colonists by and large practised a strategy that combined similar arrays of local wild meat sources with pork or beef regardless of the national affiliation of the colony, the ethnicity of the colonists, or the century in which colonization occurred.

This chapter examines how Ray Bradbury extended his reading of mainstream modern and contemporary British and American writers in all genres during the final years of World War II and beyond. Bradbury's road to all his mature fiction was paved to a large extent by a great wartime shift in his personal reading agenda. The most surprising transition in his reading is his sudden and permanent shift away from reading new science fiction sometime in 1944. This chapter discusses Bradbury's broadening reading and maturing tastes in literature by looking at some of the stories he read, from Katherine Anne Porter's Flowering Judas and The Leaning Tower to Thomas Wolfe's The Face of the Nation, Charles Jackson's The Lost Weekend, Martha Foley's Best American Short Stories of 1944, Cornell Woolrich's Rendezvous in Black, and A Touch of Nutmeg and More Unlikely Stories by John Collier.

This chapter examines the construction of Fort Napier and the maintenance of the Natal garrison in Pietermaritzburg. The arrival of the garrison in Pietermaritzburg marked the beginning of the transformation of the settlement from a Trekker hoofdplaats into a Victorian colonial capital in an African context. The design and construction work on Fort Napier was largely done by the military, but it had a profound influence on the city and the embryonic colony. The fort was also used as the base from which the small garrison began extending its influence over the colony and its hinterland. This chapter provides a background on British Army Lieutenant Charles James Gibb's planning for the construction of the fort, to be named in honor of Sir George Napier, the governor of the Cape Colony. It also considers the disputes over the expenditure on the construction of the fort, along with the permanence of the Natal garrison in relation to High Commissioner Sir Harry Smith's imperial policies in South Africa.

This chapter illustrates how voting in the Security Council is carried out. The UN Charter provides that each member of the Security Council shall have one vote, that the decisions of the Council on procedural matters must be affirmed by a vote from nine members, that Council decisions on all other matters shall be made by an affirmative vote of nine members including the concurring votes of the permanent members under certain provisions, among others. To that end, the chapter discusses further regulations that facilitate the voting process itself; such as procedures laid in place in the case of vetoes, an insufficient number of affirmative votes, voting on particular areas, interruptions, abstentions, absences, outright non-participation, as well as the processes for the finalisation of the vote.

When Javier Pérez de Cuéllar came to office in 1982 the threat of nuclear annihilation had receded but the collegiality among the Security Council’s permanent members was still absent. The scope for a UN role in the search for peace, particularly in proxy conflicts, remained small. Pérez de Cuéllar’s cautious demeanor masked a willingness to unexpectedly move in a swift and bold fashion. He worked within the constitutional no man’s land between the Security Council and the Secretary-General, sometimes at a slight remove from the Security Council so as to dissociate himself from its mistakes or omissions, using the “reservoir of authority” and “wide margin of discretion” implicit in the Charter. The combination of a Secretary-General to whom the post came unsought and a Security Council which had confidence in him produced the crucial synergy that developed between these two principal organs at a critical juncture.

Murray, Hannah Lauren. Liminal Whiteness in Early US Fiction. Edinburgh University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.3366/edinburgh/9781474481731.001.0001.

Liminal Whiteness in Early US Fiction shows that early US authors repeatedly imagined lost, challenged and negated White racial identity in the new nation. It brings together fiction and multiple discourses on White racial identity in the early US including natural history, medical science, blackface minstrelsy, abolitionism and anti-abolitionism, mesmerism and spiritualism. Moving beyond an anthropological framework of liminality and its focus on ritualised behaviour in tribal societies, this book examines liminality as both a temporary transformative experience and a permanent condition of exclusion and loss for White men in the early United States. In a Critical Whiteness reading of canonical and lesser-known texts from Charles Brockden Brown to Frank J. Webb, the book argues that White characters on the border between life and death were liminal presences that disturbed prescriptions of racial belonging in the early US. Liminal Whiteness contributes to a growing body of scholarship concerned with the cultural construction of Whiteness and citizenship in the early US, and which resonates with contemporary discussions of White cultural anxiety and fragility. Fears of losing Whiteness in the early US were routinely channelled through the language of liminality, in a precursor to today’s White anxieties of marginalisation and minoritisation.

U Thant assumed the position of Acting Secretary-General with the office under assault from the Soviet Union, Cold War tensions escalating, and the UN mired in an inconclusive peacekeeping mission in the Congo. Ten years later, Thant retired from the Secretary-Generalship with the integrity of the office having been preserved but with the powers of the Secretary-General significantly reduced. Thant acknowledged the limitations of a Security Council divided by Cold War rivalries and subject to the veto of the permanent members, but he also subscribed to the view that the Charter granted him the authority to engage in diplomacy without a specific Security Council or General Assembly mandate. By examining the peacekeeping record of the UN during Thant’s ten years in office, this chapter will trace the evolution of a UN and Secretary-General significantly more modest in ambition and international profile than the UN of Thant’s predecessor. In the process, the chapter will explore aspects of Thant’s personality, world view, and conception of the office.

Slobodan Milosevic died midway through his contentious trial by an international war crimes tribunal at The Hague. Calls for intervention and war crimes trials for the massacres and rapes in Sudan's Darfur region have been loud and clear, and the United States remains fiercely opposed to the permanent International Criminal Court. Are war crimes trials impartial, apolitical forums? Has international justice for war crimes become an entrenched aspect of globalization? InGlobal Justice, Moghalu examines the phenomenon of war crimes trials from an unusual, political perspective—that of an anarchical international society. Are war crimes trials impartial, apolitical forums? Has international justice for war crimes become an entrenched aspect of globalization? InGlobal Justice, Moghalu examines the phenomenon of war crimes trials from an unusual, political perspective—that of an anarchical international society. He argues that, contrary to conventional wisdom, war crimes trials are neither motivated nor influenced solely by abstract notions of justice. Instead, war crimes trials are the product of the interplay of political forces that have led to an inevitable clash between globalization and sovereignty on the sensitive question of who should judge war criminals. From Germany's Kaiser Wilhelm to the Japanese Emperor Hirohito, from the trials of Milosevic, Saddam Hussein, and Charles Taylor to Belgium's attempts to enforce the contested doctrine of universal jurisdiction, Moghalu renders a compelling tour de force of one of the most controversial subjects in world politics. He argues that, necessary though it was, international justice has run into a crisis of legitimacy. While international trials will remain a policy option, local or regional responses to mass atrocities will prove more durable.

Joyce, Aristotle and Aquinas examines the pervasive presence of Aristotle and Aquinas in the writings of James Joyce. Joyce was a philosophical writer, with a keen sense of primordial and perennial questions such as diversity and unity, identity, permanence and change, and the reliability of knowledge; in his writings he engaged creatively with these questions. Aristotle and Aquinas were his dominant influences, providing both significant content for his work, as well as important principles of artistic creation. O'Rourke illustrates the decisive and extensive influence of Aristotle and Aquinas by copious reference to Joyce’s writings. The biographical facts of Joyce’s education, and his initiation into the intellectual world of Aristotle and Aquinas, are charted in detail. Aristotle equipped Joyce with fundamental principles regarding reality, knowledge, and the soul, which allowed him to shape his literary characters. Without his study of Aristotle’s Metaphysics and On the Soul, he could not have created the intellectual character of Stephen portrayed in the early chapters of Ulysses. The debate in ‘Scylla and Charybdis’ between Stephen, Eglinton and Russell would have been impossible. The Aristotelian concepts of act and potency, form and entelechy, are indispensable for Stephen’s reading of the world and his sense of selfhood. Besides relying on Aquinas as an authority for his realist outlook, Joyce appropriated Thomistic concepts to elaborate his own aesthetic theory; he diverged widely, however, from his credited source.

One of the primary goals of the United Nations (UN) is to provide justice. The vast majority of mentions of “justice” in the UN Charter relate to the creation of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), one of the UN’s five principal organs. However, this body is not empowered to take cases on behalf of aggrieved individuals or even to prosecute individual malefactors. Rather, it is “justice” for states that is its goal. Meanwhile, the treaties signed at the 1948 Peace of Westphalia radically delimited the arena of international affairs. Most importantly, Westphalia held as paramount the noninterference by other states in the internal affairs of other members of the international community. Rejecting the logic of Westphalia, the notions of “humanitarian intervention” and the “responsibility to protect” refer to the legal right and/or obligation for a state to interfere in another state for purposes of humanitarian protection. Consequently, the UN established the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in order to address the carnage ongoing in the Balkans, as well as the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR), which targeted that country’s 1994 Hutu–Tutsi violence. Meanwhile, the International Criminal Court (ICC), a non-UN institution, is the first permanent international tribunal devoted to justice in the wake of mass crimes. Each of these post-Cold War international tribunals have been concerned with the enforcement of International Humanitarian Law (IHL). Ultimately, however, the international community continues to hold fast to central elements of Westphalian protections.
