Ah, quando fia ch'io possa in Italia tornar? Ha ormai tre mesi, che in questi rei paese Già fatto schiavo, e dal mio ben lontano …Alas, when might I return to my Italy? For three months now I have been enslaved in this evil land, so distant from my homeGioacchino Rossini, L'Italiana in AlgeriNineteenth-century travel accounts contributed to the existing body of knowledge about the world at the time they were written, and today they serve as witness to the merging of expansionist progress with the scientific state. The primary function of these accounts was to circumscribe the world of rationality. Their authors were enlightened nomads whose duty was to incorporate new and astonishing facts as objects of knowledge into their writing, which created a mise en scène of mysterious plots; this process was in fact the first globalisation. Romanticism organised this narrative into a powerful textual montage on alterity, which combined scientific discourse, aesthetic response, and humanistic concern. Such a multifaceted set of characteristics posed serious challenges for the traveller-writer of that era, and Latin Americans had their own grand tour.

My aim in this paper is to examine some of the distinctive facets of human action in Spinoza’s philosophy and show their intrinsic connection with each other. By analyzing in detail how Spinoza addresses different aspects of human action in his main work, the Ethics, it is possible to notice that for him free human agency implies two interrelated features: on the one hand, the adequate knowledge of the causes that determine it, and, on the other hand, a growing capacity to impact with greater power the scenarios in which it takes place. Thus, in contrast with quietist and passive readings, I show in the following that the two aforementioned characteristics are part of the Spinozian philosophical conception of agency as such. By pursuing this line of thought, it is also possible to establish a link—not always noticed in the secondary literature—with some of the central lines of thought contained in the Theological-Political Treatise. In discussing these theses, I advance the idea that the Spinozian conception of human agency involves a serious readjustment of the metaphysical vision of the agent, a change in her conduct and ethical practices, and an altogether different conception of politics and religion.

Suretyship agreement is one of the ancient personal security devices known from Roman law. This agreement pursues the aim to protect property interests of the creditor. Nowadays, it is especially concluded between the parties in order to ensure the performance of the debt contracts. Taking into account the essence of suretyship contracts in practice, the legal consequences emerging from the default of the main debtor have to be enlightened. That is why, the scope and characteristics of the surety’s liability in respect of joint and subsidiary suretyship are researched in this article. It illustrates the basis of the creditor’s right to resort to the surety, the comparative analysis of legislative norms regulating the types of surety’s liabilities with foreign legal systems. Parenting children with developmental disabilities (DD) can be generally characterized by a considerable psychological burden. The effects on parental and familial psychological well-being and, consequently, on children’s developmental outcomes should not be underestimated, especially in early childhood. The current review aims to advance our understanding of the key factors (e.g., formats, sample characteristics, research design) that characterize parent training interventions, and that could be related to their outcomes, to guide researchers and clinical practitioners to develop and provide efficient programs. Studies were identified via an Internet search from three electronic databases, following PRIMSA guidelines. Studies published until November 2021 were taken into account. The initial search yielded a total of 2475 studies. Among them, 101 studies were fully reviewed. Finally, ten of the studies, which met all the inclusion criteria, formed the basis for this review. Participants’ characteristics, main features of the interventions (i.e., study design, structure, and contents), outcome variables and treatment efficacy were deeply examined and discussed. Key factors of parent training interventions with parents of children affected by DD are enlightened, to guide researchers and clinicians in the design and implementation of tailored specific programs, aimed to sustain parenting and foster children’s developmental outcomes, from early stages of life.

AbstractA dimensional-decomposition approach, decomposing 3D into 3×1D for turbulent (reacting) flows are motivated, discussed and investigated. In the three-dimensional Linear Eddy Model (LEM3D), three orthogonally intersecting arrays of 1D domains are coupled to capture the 3D characteristics of fluid flows. The currently used recouplings for LEM3D are enlightened and thoroughly discussed. A study of the flame front of a freely propagating laminar premixed flame shows that the flame stabilizes at the upstream face of the initial solution when both the advective and auxiliary recouplings are activated. Furthermore, results from LEM3D simulations of a vitiated co-flow burner are re-visited providing a more detailed discussion of the noted early mixing and reaction of the hydrogen fuel of the burner. The main conclusion of the present work is that the auxiliary coupling based on rotations of the 3D control volumes introduces very large gradients in the near-field geometry of jets, leading to a significant amount of artificial diffusion and locally increased burning rates. This implies that applications of LEM3D should be restricted to sub-regions where high-resolution treatment of scalar mixing and reaction is of particular interest.

In the last quarter of the XIX century in the enlightened circles of Europe, the United States and the Russian Empire, an ethical concept began to emerge, according to which not only women, but also men were obliged to maintain «purity» before marriage and lead a chaste lifestyle; the social origins of this idea can be found in the self-consciousness of women that was forming during this period and the movement for equality that was beginning to actively develop, which inevitably raised the question of abolishing double standards and the need for society to accept the same moral criteria for both sexes. On the wave of this movement in Europe, the United States and the Russian Empire, various unions, societies and fraternities began to be created, the purpose of which was to promote premarital abstinence and a chaste lifestyle - primarily among men, since women a priori had to, according to the prevailing patriarchal ideas, preserve virginity before marriage. Despite the fact that society as a whole was not ready to accept such ideas, the very fact of the emergence of such associations speaks of a gradual the changes taking place in the field of marriage and family relations.

Human being is the best creature of Almighty Allah. It was felt that an accurate celestial book was needed to win the satisfaction of Allah while maintaining his superiority. It is a great mercy of Almighty Allah that He revealed the Quran as a book to solve all problems. The first instruction of this book is ‘Read’. But He did not make it clear about the method of reading. Based on the instruction of Allah, the Holy Prophet PBUH prepared a group of world-renowned enlightened people by focusing the light of education to the human being through various methods. Subsequently, to make that education easily available to the people, according to the demand of time, various educational methods were developed in different times. One of these methods is formal education and the other is open and distance learning with a combination of formal and non-formal education. Bangladesh Open University is offering education through this method of education in the country. The main point of this article is to discuss this method in the light of the Holy Quran and the Hadith. However, before onsetting the main discussion, the purpose of establishing Bangladesh Open University, its education system, and open and distance learning methods, its aims and objectives and characteristics have briefly been discussed.

AbstractThe purpose of this paper is to: (a) offer rationale for the importance of an increasingly important organizational management topic – the wisdom of top managers – what we call executive wisdom; (b) develop a theoretical framework for the construct, including core components and outcomes, and (c) provide implications for practice. The research in several related literatures is reviewed and synthesized to provide the foundation for the development of this theoretical framework. Applying the extant literature on wisdom to the specific context of a top-level business manager, we argue that there are four foundational characteristics of executive wisdom: (1) Knowledge, developed by prior learning and experience, (2) moral maturity, (3) reflective strategic decision-making, and (4) ability to manage uncertainty. Executives possessing such characteristics are: (a) able to make enlightened strategic judgments that are (b) implemented as principled actions. The effectiveness of such implementation is contingent upon, among other moderators, the executive's leadership skills. We view each of the characteristics as necessary but not sufficient to possess and benefit from executive wisdom. The principled actions undertaken by those possessing executive wisdom will, when compared to other executives, have a greater likelihood of leading to valued outcomes indicative of organizational effectiveness, including enhanced stakeholder trust and loyalty, reputational capital, and stronger financial and social performance. We believe that the main arguments developed in this paper will help improve managers’ understanding of how to become a wise executive and to realize the benefits of doing so. From a theory perspective, this paper adds to the growing body of literature in a new and increasingly valued area of research.

Abstract The question (once again) is in what cognitively acceptable way the Alētheia and Doxa sections of the epic should be connected, that is to say in what way Parmenides himself may have envisaged the relation between ontological Truth and mistaken human Opinions. An important distinction is found to obtain between the common run of humankind, ignorant and helpless, and an enlightened human elite. The views of this elite serve as an intermediate between the cognitive condition of humanity in general and the arcane knowledge and ontology of the Alētheia section and help to attenuate the dualism by bridging the gap between ignorance and absolute Truth. There is a significant and crucial interplay between the two sections which works both ways, forward from the Alētheia to the Doxa section and backwards from the Doxa to the Alētheia section. Defining characteristics of the elements per se and of their compounds in the Doxa section are reflections of defining properties of Being in the Alētheia section. Conversely, recognition of these elemental characteristics may point the way back to properties of Being. The argument of the epic from fr. B1 to fr. B19 DK is strictly organized by means of reiterated theses and type-scenes, which lend an overarching unity to the poem. This technique itself is not new, but the contents of these reiterated motifs (such as the mention of humans, of the distinction between Being and not-Being, of name-giving, or of defining properties and characteristics) are original. The reiterated motifs which secure the proofs of the main thesis function as hidden persuaders. The story of the extraordinary journey of the anonymous author to the dwelling of his nameless goddess and the revelation he receives from her have been carefully authenticated and stage-managed to provide divine backing for the stunning doctrines put forward and are also aimed at convincing the audience.

The source base for the study on the Gnostic missionary activity in general is rather scarce, nonetheless in the case of the Valentinians, one of the major branches of ancient Christian gnosticism, the main characteristics of the their mission could be given with some certainty. First of all the Valentinians run the mission directed to other Christians. It was conducted by means of public teaching during the open gatherings of the Valentinian communities. The more interested were then taken aside and provided with more specific instructions. The written texts, such as letters or introductory treatises, were also in use. Valentinian mission had probably mostly educational character, because there is no source evidence for Valentinian efforts to gain new members for their own church communities. The main goal was to bring the spiritual enlightenment, divine knowledge, to brothers who did not yet received it. Of course such an enlightened Christian presumably in greater part joined the Valentinian community, however the sources do not confirm, that it was either demanded or recommended. The mission to the Pagans is not so well testified. The Valentinian texts from Nag Hammadi Codices, such as Tractatus Tripartitus and Letter to Rheginus prove that there were some converts from among the Pagans, but probably not numerous and not eagerly sought. Only the former text mentions some kind of apostles of good message, who might be recognized as those who preach to non-Christians. We do not know however, if they spread the basics of Christianity or at once its deeper Gnostic meaning.

In particular, the characteristics of the «Burshtyn Energy Island» are enlightened, which includes Burshtyn TPP, Kalush CHPP and Tereble- Ritsk HPP that are detached from the power system of Ukraine and operate in parallel with the European system ENTSO-E. This island serves as an importer of Ukrainian electric power to European countries through Hungary and Slovakia, respectively, and is synchronized with the European Network of System Operators for Electricity Transmission (ENTSO-E). The main problem of the international transmission of electric current of Ukraine is determined, which is that the whole energy system of Ukraine works within the international energy union of the CIS and Baltic IPS / UPS. At the same time, the integration of Ukraine into the markets of Western European countries requires the break of established connections under the IPS / UPS system and the parallel increase of communications under the ENTSO-E system through Poland, Slovakia, Romania and Hungary. The prospect for the development of the Energy Bridge project, which provides the supply of electric power from the Khmelnitsk NPP to Poland through the Khmelnitsk NPP - Rzeszow, is described. It is proposed the stages for the further development of energy security in the information direction on the introduction of Smart Grid technologies, in which energy companies will be able to manage the whole network as the only flexible digital system, and end users - to clearly regulate their own electricity costs.

This paper presents the main methodological features of Abduhu’s school of reformation in the field of tafsir, especially its relation to traditional explanation of Qur’an. There is little doubt that this school, despite the critiques, initiated a range of useful things in Islamic world. Its influences to subsequent generations of scholars, throughout the Islamic world, are more than evident. One of the special values is the fact that the school encouraged research and critical thinking in Muslim world. According to the school, Qur’an is primarily the book of hidayet – instructions, and in its content there should be the key for questions and temptations imposed by dynamics of human life and general progress. It is possible to integrate Islam with modern civilization and for that purpose Abhuhu and his students stress the rational character of Islam. They do it in various ways: they demonstrate that there is no any important impediment to integrating intellect and the Revelation, they emphasize Islamic enlightened viewpoint regarding knowledge (the way Qur’an encourages people to think, meditate and acquire knowledge), they try to purify the religion of irrational and superstitious elements such as magic (sihir), miracle, saint worship cult, etc. Important characteristics of Abduh’s school of reformation that represent epochal value for contemporary Islamic thought are: the call for reopening door to ijjtihad and leaving the blind taklid, fight against sectarianism, israilijjates, weak and apocryphal hadiths, as well as the desire to free Tafsir of unnecessary technical terms and represent it in the context of modern age.

The second constitutional monarchy period is an important milestone in both the customs and legacies it handed down to Turkish political culture and the specific characteristics of the period. The movement which a group of enlightened people and especially the young Turks lead made II.Abdülhamit declare the constitutional monarchy in 1908. From this point of view, we can say that the constitutional monarchy is the most comprehensive democratic movement in the Ottoman State. However, for the Young Turks who were the founders of freedom, the problem of saving the country rather than freedom was the main aim of their politics. The second constitutional monarchy is the first sample of multiparty system. With the collapse of monarchy, a constitutional system was formed and political parties which are indispensables of democracy were established. This inevitably contributed the development of democratic culture in power/opposition conflict. But, this disagreement focused "intolerance" in politics rather than increasing the ability of conflicting culture acceptance. An important aspect of the second constitutional monarchy is that it passes the strong burocracy tradition on commonwealth burocracy. This situation has closely impressed Turkish state tradition. Another issue that makes the period important is the thoughts and actions of Young Turks. in the direction of this data, rather than what the second constitutional monarchy has brought, how this return has affected the political power tradition in view of political heritage and in what aspects it has influenced the burocracy and democracy tradition have been aimed in this study. Several scientific sources related to the topic have been searched and a point of view has been reached in order to reach this aim.

Study purpose. The paper shows the application of statistical methods for the trade credit management in the wholesale Russian companies. In this industry, the companies deal with a huge amount of customers, while trade credit is a common practice. As a result, fast and reasonable choice of trade credit terms becomes especially important for wholesale companies. The main study purpose is to provide the methods to choose the trade credit terms.Materials and methods. In this paper, the methods for trade credit management are based of the empirical research where binomial logistic model and discriminant analysis were used. The binomial logistic model was used to assess the customers’ reliability, his inclination to violate the terms specified in the contract. The delay period must be chosen when trade credit is provided. In the paper, the discriminant analysis was applied to make the decision. The discriminant functions allow choosing such a period of delay that will be broken with the least probability by the customer with certain financial and non-financial characteristics. The data used refer to 11 Russian companies from the wholesale industry and include 720 observations for 2016-2017.Results. As a result, the possibility of due repayment may be evaluated and the payment delay may be selected according to individual customers’ characteristics. Eight factors that characterize the liquidity of the purchaser, its profitability, turnover, and non-financial factors became significant to assess the reliability. In conclusion, the paper contains the practical example for four hypothetical purchasers with different characteristics. The higher the reliability of the customer, the more attractive conditions can be offered for him, depending on the propensity to risk of the wholesale company, as well as its financial opportunities.Conclusion. This article contains the model to evaluate the possibility of due repayment and algorithm to select the payment delay, which are based on the binomial logistic model and classification functions. Although there are a large number of methods to select the terms of trade credit, the majority of them have serious limitations. The most of methods are based only on the professional experience, while statistical analysis, in presence, is based on data of one company because of the confidentiality of necessary information. In contrast, this article is based on the empirical data and includes the delay period selection, which is slightly enlightened in the literature.

In the realm of imaginative painting Blake stands quite alone, and to find any real parallel to this extraordinary man of genius one must go back to the illuminators and sculptors of the twelfth century. Born out of time, with no tradition of imaginative painting to guide him, the intense flame if his genius burns fitfully blazing with an unbearable brilliance. Blake, for his idiosyncratic views is held in high regard by critics for his expressiveness and creativity, and for the philosophical and mystical undercurrents within his work. His paintings and poetry have been characterized as part of the Romantic movement are Pre-Romantic for its large appearance in the 18th C. / Dositej’s enlightenment ideology is examined by interpreting the sym- bolic meanings of lion in Fables (1788). Applying literary-historical, structuralist and comparative methods of interpretation, the semantic range of literary lions is illuminated: from reference to (un)enlightened being (due to greed, destruction and bloodthirstiness) to reference to the characteristics and nature of enlightened beings (due to mercy, gratitude, purity). Dositej Obradović underlines the key ideas of enlightenment ideology through allegorical representations of lions, which reveal the basic characteristics of an enlightened ruler: love for all branches of science and art, nurturing and building the right taste, spreading useful knowledge among all social classes. If merciful/wise lion is the bearer of an enlightened mind, it means that the nature of an enlightened ruler, untouched by selfish individualism, promises a just political and social order. In order to reform people’s life and society, the ruler must lead the process of „coming out” from nonage by speaking out against coercion, inhumanity, superstition and bad customs.

This article explores how in The Novel of My Life Heredia’s tragedy -that is forced exile- stems from a dynamics between colonialism and culture in Cuba. At the same time, this dynamics reveals the transatlantic concatenations between the imperial politics of Spain and the colonial character of nineteenth-century Cuba. Heredia’s tragedy, I argue, is depicted in Padura’s novel as a consequence of a socio-historical reality in which Heredia’s enlightened, or liberal, ideas about politics and independence where rather “misplaced ideas” in the Cuba of the 1820s. In other words, some of these European liberal ideas became “misplaced ideas” when they were displaced first to the Spanish context, and subsequently to the colonial context in Cuba. The incongruences between the political structures and culture of the Spanish dynastic state and enlightened European ideas reflected themselves on colonial Cuba.

In the current paper were studied a number of 200 sturgeons from Polyodon spathula of 4th summer (P.s.3+) breed, reared in a fishery farm from North-East of Romania. Studying of modification of sensorial characteristics of meat, analysed just after fishing and during preservation by refrigeration during 15 days (+2 +4oC), show an optimal keeping period by refrigeration of the studied fishes for 5-6 days. The pH level from the studied muscles oscillated between values 7.9 and 7.11, after slaughtering, and at 24 h after slaughtering between 6.88 and 6.89. The water content of fillet (lateral muscles) had values of 75.41%; protein content of fillet (lateral muscles) had values of 19.89%; lipid content of fillet (lateral muscles) was 3.45%; collagen content of fillet (lateral muscles) had values of 4.14%. The values of water-protein rate (w/p = 3.79) placed the analyzed paddlefishes in the second category; energetic value of fillet gathered from studied fishes was 114.31 kcal/100 g. The rate of amino-acids from the total sum was 26.23% for the essential amino acids, 4.61% for semi-essential amino acids and 69.16% for non-essential amino acids. As rate the quantity of saturated fatty acids recorded the value of 25.64% for epaxial muscles, respectively 25.83% for hypaxial muscles; rate of mono-unsaturated fatty acids was 54.77% for epaxial muscles and 54.50% for hypaxial muscles; poly-unsaturated fatty acids had a rate of 19.59% for epaxial muscles and 19.67% for hypaxial muscles. Through histological studies for establishing the rate of muscular and conjunctive tissues from meat of studied paddlefishes, was observed that in case of lateral muscles mean diameter had an intermediary value of 43.42 . Those data leaded to obtain a mean area for transversal section of 1485.74 2. Mean diameter of muscular fibre (43.42 ) characterize a meat with fine texture. Profile on transversal section of muscular fibres had an ellipsoidal shape; fact which was enlightened by the rate between great diameter and small diameter (GD/SD) which varied between 1.35/1 -1.61/1. The rate of the main tissue categories in composition of lateral muscles gathered from analysed paddlefishes revealed the fact that mean rate of muscular tissue was of 70.47%, while mean rate of conjunctive tissues was of only 29.52%.

This article is an analysis of Mikhail Chulkov’s Dictionary of Russian Superstitions, published in 1782. It places the dictionary in the historical and cultural context of Enlightenment Europe, from which the genre was drawn, and suggests that Chulkov’s use of the genre was part of his own efforts to fashion himself as a civilized, Enlightened man. The article considers the various practices and beliefs described in the dictionary and lays out the various categories of people those which “superstitious” practices and beliefs were ascribed. By comparing the various categories of people described in the dictionary, the article argues that Chulkov’s vision of the Others of the Russian Empire was characterized by a sympathy towards Orthodox Christians and a skepticism about the ability of non-Orthodox subjects of the empire to become civilized. It also considers how Chulkov’s treatment of women and Old Believers reveals his own anxieties about the persistence of superstition into an ostensibly Enlightened era of history.

He did not come into contact with many whom he did not subdue: the highest rank often sunk before him. One notes, straightaway, the language of avoirdupois: the man ‘imposes’, he ‘subdues’, and beneath him others ‘sink’. Thomas Hussey had weight. That is evident in the portrait which hangs today in the building that rests on his foundations, Spanish Place: it conveys the force of character of one who was, in the words of another acquaintance, ‘by talents, nerves, ambition and intrepidity fitted for the boldest enterprise’.

The Enlightened Movement in Spain is widely known for its modernizing effort and its economic and social reform projects in Spain in the 18th and 19th centuries. In line with the European Enlightenment, the ideals of classical liberalism and utilitarianism began to spread hand in hand with the enlightened intellectuals as a paradigm towards the well-being of the people. The anthropocentric turn of the Enlightenment brought with it not only the struggle for the rights of man and the consequent evolution of European absolute monarchies towards enlightened despotism, but also the evolution of the very perception of wealth, well-being and happiness of the society. Thanks to the works of Adam Smith, Thomas Malthus or Jeremy Bentham, the roots of the Happiness Economics can be traced back to the 18th century through the association they made between the economic development of society and the level of happiness. This paper analyzes the project of the Royal Sevillian Economic Society of Friends of the Country for the salted meat trade with the province of Buenos Aires as a case study of the connection between economic development, well-being and happiness in the Spanish Enlightenment through the study of the transcripts of sessions collected in the Libro de Actas No. 1 (1775-1780) and the copies of letters collected in the Book of Correspondence of the Society, as well such as the loose papers available in the Municipal Archive of Seville.

The entrenched and firm conviction that man is master of nature while being separate from it has fostered the culture of the indiscriminate use of natural resources, the destruction of eco-systems and a waste society. Over recent decades, behind the urgent need to halt the ecological drift, the natural landscape has been of considerable interest in various disciplinary contexts including biology, from which it has gained renewed consideration from the “ecology of landscape” perspective, and ethics. Once the theoretical aspects of the ecology of the landscape concept have been clarified, I will demonstrate that the human condition is part of the natural environment. On this basis I will highlight the necessity for man to develop an ecological awareness founded on responsibility regarding biodiversity. The ethics of responsibility, enlightened by an ecological awareness, have to inspire living and guide environmental policy-making.

This article outlines the work on development of leadership potential of the US and separate European countries border guards. It elaborates in detail the significance of the officer leadership potential, importance of the leadership in the border protection system. There are enlightened the main lines of work on development of personal attributes of the border guard officer as a leader, specific features of his leadership skills formation, psychological basis of leadership training. The author discloses the programs of leadership development, being deployed in the Federal Training Center of the US Customs and Border Protection. The "Leadership in a crisis environment" training program is based on the research studies and is supposed to help law enforcement officials to raise the level of leadership skills required in crisis. This program focuses on the basic concepts of communication, cooperation, critical thinking and the features of decision-making. It provides for the creation of an environment that shapes the ability of participants to apply leadership qualities, interpersonal communication and decision-making skills in a crisis situation. In its turn, the "Leadership through Understanding Human Behavior" training program helps participants better understand themselves, interpersonal dynamics, and how their strengths and weaknesses and roles in working groups and teams affect mission outcomes. The program provides for the development of self-consciousness, the ability to recognize behavioral styles to establish relationships, required for the creation of more effective working groups and teams. There presented the topics of the "Security and Border Management Courses for Senior Leaders" for middle and senior border officers at the OSCE Border Management Staff College. It is found that in order to develop the leadership potential of border officials, foreign countries apply an integrated approach to training, paying attention to the formation of analytical thinking, the acquisition of professional management skills and abilities. In the training methodology, theoretical and practical classes, situational tasks, business games, trainings are widely used. Taking into account foreign experience, in order to increase the managerial level of future border guard officers, it is proposed to familiarize them with what it means to be a leader, how to organize work in a team, how to manage subordinates and be responsible for leading the border unit. There also outlined the importance of research on the leadership potential of the border guard officer, leadership in the border protection system, the characteristics of the officer as a leader of the border unit. Purpose The purpose of this paper is to verify whether, besides the traditional organisational models mainly implemented by wine-making cooperatives, more modern and hybrid organisational forms can be profitably applied within an increasingly competitive wine market. Design/methodology/approach The study outlined in this paper deployed a mixed method. Specifically, an archived analysis, a survey and a descriptive case study (including visits, interviews and documentary analysis) were the methodological techniques used in this study, which were “in series but integrated” between themselves. In this paper, the landscape of Sicilian wine cooperatives is described by collating and processing different types of statistical sources, which have been integrated by direct surveys undertaken in 2017. Thereafter, the study focussed on a wine cooperative with a specific business model and a strategic edge by analysing its strategic choices and main structural and governance characteristics. Within this case study, a financial ratio analysis, which was based on 2011-2017 financial statements, was conducted to analyse the profitability, financial balance, capital structure and debt relationships of the wine cooperative. Findings The Sicilian wine cooperative system is still predominantly characterised by partial and vertical integration, implemented by cooperatives which elect to sell mainly bulk wine to wine merchants. In such a context, there is scope for other degrees of integration and strategic inter-firm alliances; the latter includes “vertical quasi-integration”. The study demonstrated how the wine cooperative under investigation is overcoming the structural problems of the regional wine sector and why it is retaining such a strategic alliance with one of the most important Italian wine conglomerates. Indeed, it has acquired greater strength and reliability since its collaboration with the aforementioned wine company. Thus, total revenue and the company’s market share of packaged wine have increased. However, there are still margins for improving sales’ profitability. Research limitations/implications This study has territorial limitations but Sicilian wine cooperatives generally play an important role in the regional, Italian and European wine industries. As such, this research should be considered as an exploratory study, deserving further investigation into different strategic choices within the wine cooperative system by performing cross-case comparisons. Results may also be useful in orienting cooperative strategies in Sicily (or further afield) to small-to-medium wine cooperatives, often lacking specific abilities relating to the distribution, marketing and selling of their wine. Public agricultural policies may also be enlightened by these research pathways. Originality/value The authors contend that their study provides hitherto missing information relating to inter-firm strategic alliances, which wine cooperatives might implement to enhance their competitiveness and survive in the long-run.

The article analyzing the treatise by Meletius Smotrytsky's «Threnos» attempts to systematize the views of the author on the role and place of the Orthodox hierarchy in the formation of Ukrainian national ideology and political tradition. The key idea of the «Threnos» is the idea that social and historical conditions of that time in Ukraine require the appearance of a constellation of prophets or shepherds who are understood by author as spiritual mentors of the people. Their task was to enlighten Ukrainian society and raise its national-religious consciousness. The author of the «Threnos» pays considerable attention to the criticism of the hierarchs of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church when he determines their role in society, therefore, he obviously correlates this role with the expected arrival of the named ecclesiastical and moral leaders, and this gives us reason to suppose that the church should nominate the mentioned spiritual shepherd. Orthodox Church is also versed by Smotrytsky as an authoritative social institution obliged to become the basis for the moral improvement of society and its consolidation before the realization of an external threat. Smotrytsky pays special attention to the condemnation of the actual culprits of the situation that was formed ‑ in fact, the members of the church hierarchy. He distinguishes three main levels of criticism, which are used to judge the degree of decline of the spiritual shepherd - theological, ethical and social. According to Smotrytsky, each of these levels logically follows from the previous one, creating a peculiar hierarchical sequence linking the true shepherd with God, on the one hand, and with the Ukrainian society on the other one. He sees the main cause of evil in forgetting God's covenants. Smotrytsky believes that the indifference to the testaments of God is connected with the ignorance and incompetence of the ministers of the church, devastating to the whole flock. In other words, only the enlightened mind of the shepherd can make him a real mediator of the will of God - "good shepherd". Meanwhile, the ignorance is the cause of the ethical decline of the hierarchs of the Orthodox Church, and as a result, the moral degradation of all classes of Ukrainian society. According to Smotrytsky, the key to understanding the social behavior of the «evil shepherd» is the principle of the formation of the Orthodox hierarchy, namely the practice of selling church positions, for which the applicant was not obliged to undergo a pre-examination and election procedure, which would exclude a bad candidate. The result is logical: the immorality of shepherds, standing at the basis of their social behavior, leads to the humiliation of the authority of the Orthodox hierarchy, which, in turn, stimulates the collapse of the church structure that should cement Ukrainian society. Constructing an oppositional set of properties that relate to the characteristics of a «good shepherd», Smotrytsky draws his image in terms that repeat the foregoing, but receive a qualitatively different ethical sound. If pastorship was based on the authority of ethical perfection, it would provide the opportunity to cure the social diseases that struck the church, the main of which is the sale of church positions. However, though necessary, these steps are insufficient to consolidate the entire Ukrainian society. According to Smotrytsky, as a result of the healing of the Orthodox Church, its shepherds will have the moral right to lead the entire Ukrainian «nation». Thus, the ideas of Meletius Smotrytsky became, in fact, the first fixed attempt of Ukrainian intellectuals to offer their option for the further development of Ukrainian society, designed to ensure the continuity of the process of forming a national ideology and political tradition in conditions of explicit tension in interconfessional relations. The main role in this process is given to the updated Orthodox Church and its expected «good shepherds», who are called not only to improve the Church itself but also to consolidate the Orthodox community. In spite of the expressive motives of Christian providentialism, in the future this concept has found completely secular application, contributing to the ideological justification of the actions of the Orthodox brotherhoods and the Zaporozhian Cossacks, aimed at the restoration of the Orthodox hierarchy as new political elite.

It also aims to demonstrate how, in developing this theory, Nietzsche may have been inspired by Ralph Waldo Emerson. For both Emerson and Nietzsche, being is continuously becoming in a circular movement. The enlightened man, wanting to attain knowledge of reality, must reproduce in himself this circular movement, which involves always experimenting with contradictory values throughout his life. He can never attain complete and definite knowledge of being, but only knowledge as approximate as possible to its true essence.

The title of this paper relates directly to the celebrated work of Max Horkheimer and Theodor W. Adorno: Dialektik der Aufklärung. Philosophische Fragmente. It shows as dialectical because of the ideas associated with engaging the rational mastery of the world from the degeneration of the practical ideas in increasingly sophisticated forms of man's dominion over man. Ecological interpretation of such understanding of the dialectic of Enlightenment gives it a modern expression in the sense that it points to one of the most pressing contemporary problems, born of the mythical inspiration functioning of enlightened reason, and today, in the name of being a man claiming to be his task to demythologize reality. Broadly speaking, in the name of human freedom the idea is to overcome the enlightenment tradition of freedom or its’ degeneration in more subtle forms of practical denial. This study follows this line of reasoning and expresses the conviction that today appears to illustrate the dialectic of enlightenment in environmental and bioethical issues.

Mark the Hermit, a monk from the 4th century, active probably in Asia Minor, indicates in an original way that the cause of passion in man is forgetting about good thoughts (lēthē), carelessness (rhathymia) and ignorance (agnoia). This threefold evil is opposed by the following means: forgetfulness – by memory of good works, carelessness – by most sincere readiness, ignorance – by enlightened cognition. Nobody before him had ever dealt with the causes of passion in such a way and indicated such an antidote to them. In order to understand Mark the Hermit’s theory, it is necessary to look in detail at this writer’s teaching about passion and the ascetic fight against it. This article is devoted to this spiritually important issue.

<span lang="EN-US">Green marketing has evolved in line with an increase in consumers' concern with the environment. This study explores whether an environmentally-oriented market niche exists within the airline transport market in Taiwan. Based on a survey of 416 airline customers, this study uses factor analysis and cluster analysis to segment customers based on their environmental behaviors. Three distinct clusters were identified (i.e., the environmentally indifferent, the enlightened environmentalists, and the active environmentalists) and further profiled with respect to the socio-demographic, behavioral, and attitudinal characteristics. The results suggest that the segment of green consumers is large enough to warrant airline marketers' attention and the enlightened and the active environmentalists appear to represent the most promising target markets. The practical implications of the findings and future research directions are discussed.</span>

If a continuous rationalization can really manifest in deeply experienced human tragedies, it is then the historical figure of the Emperor Joseph the Second. He has, like almost no other, understood the substance and the pressing necessity of this “continuous rationalization”. He understood it not only cognitively, but perceived in it, even the message of the history itself. There was in him this concrete content, this ever again reproducing duality of history and politics. Joseph II was a man in the center, at the intersection, at the crystallization point of principles fighting with each other, a medium between history and politics. He became under these principles themselves an abstract principle (what has also been often the case with the later Hapsburg sovereigns). What was missing to him, was indeed the generous creativity, that can sometimes be an art of politics, an art which can sometimes achieve the impossible. He finally remained to the mercy of the greatest historical forces, or of their hazards, a victim of the circumstances turning for the worse. The reform absolutism is also missing one of the fundamental hypotheses of the optimal enlightened activity, namely the transformation of the insights, opinions, convictions of the citizens. If we think through this logic consistently, we might even still think, that the term “Enlightenment” does not apply, for this reason, to the enlightened absolutism. For it was Joseph II himself, as it was once mentioned, who eliminated “through the Masonic patent the most important organized freedom space of the opinion formation”. His practice does not orientate toward the modification of the consciousness which, according to his rules, will then change the reality. His practice is oriented -and indeed for his supposed perfect omnipotence-toward the modification of the reality, so that citizens, given the perfection and legitimacy of the institutions, will take naturally the way of the right consciousness. He destroys the false consciousness not with the specific enlightened practice, but he tries to cut it simply the ground from under the feet.

Albert Einstein, in an Address in Chicago observed: [t]he existence and validity of human rights are not written in the stars. The ideals concerning the conduct of men towards each other and the desirable structure of the community have been conceived and taught by enlightened individuals in the course of history. Those ideals and convictions which resulted from historical experience, from the craving for beauty and harmony, have been readily accepted in theory by man – and at all times, have been trampled upon by the same people under the pressure of their animal instincts. A large part of history is therefore replete with the struggle for those human rights, an eternal struggle in which a final victory can never be won. But to tire in that struggle would mean the ruin of society.

The aim of this consultation is to identify the roots of Japan’s perception ofmultilateralism through the work of two pre-war Japanese scholars –Chomin Nakae and Sakuzo Yoshino. The article assumes that intellectualand cultural traditions influence modern perceptions of basic politicalconcepts. Japan is a country which has long been marked as isolationist andmilitarist, and whose political thinking has been disregarded by thediscipline of international relations. However, on the example of Nakae andYoshino’s thought, we can observe that the idea of internationalcooperation had been researched well before the end of the 19th century. However, Japanese scholars projected their cultural and sociopoliticalbackground into their perception of multilateralism. Nakae depicted avision of a functional long term cooperation uniting Western and Confucianthought; meanwhile, Yoshino saw multilateralism as a way towards theemancipation of the enlightened Japanese man.

Navoi’s genius in this regard is proved by examples. The crown prince in the epic, the brave prince, the enterprising king who conquered the hearts of lands and people with courage and cunning, the enlightened sage, the perfect man who possessed the knowledge of the unseen, and finally the end of the work. This study will explore the Enlightenment conception of the individual of reason, its attempted formulations in actor biographies, and its ultimate denial by the reality of human identity as multiple, fluid, and dialogical. Such fluidity sought to overcome the marginal status of the stage player through the embodiment of rational models of personality. Some stage celebrities, most notably David Garrick, were offering themselves as public models of identity for the new age of reasoned discourse. This involved the presentation before the public of stage performers as fully realized individuals. However, the unavoidable problem was that presenting an individual, even a renowned stage star, as a living paradigm of the enlightened person of reason would prove elusive. Aside from the inherent contradiction of locating any perfected stereotype in an actual person, the qualities making an individual in full conformity to his or her “reason” did not match the particular cultural qualities demanded for a successful eighteenth-century middle-class Englishman or Englishwoman. Nonetheless, by the last quarter of the eighteenth century, significant advances were made both within the particular profession of acting and before the onstage and offstage public. The acting profession was moving quickly and for the first time in England away from its marginalized status to offer respected agents for cultural change. The new genre of actor biographies as well contributed to this more fully realized formulation of the modern individual.
