French Canadian poet William Chapman is generally dismissed as second-rate imitator of Lamartine, Hugo or his compatriot Louis Fréchette. Chapman's bitter feud with Fréchette has been – much more than the five collections of verse he published between 1876 and 1912 – his claim to fame. Despite being at odds with his North American contemporaries, Chapman was indefatigable in his pursuit of literary prestige. Chapman's quest for literary honours including the Nobel Prize, while it has thus far attracted the derision of critics, in fact provides context for a deeper understanding of his poetic practice within the shifting philanthropic landscape of the turn of the century. Close readings of two of Chapman's poems, ‘À M. Andrew Carnegie’ and ‘Nobel’, alongside contemporary journalistic sources, point to a new understanding of Chapman's considerable body of occasional verse and of Chapman himself as a savvy professional attuned to the developing ‘economy of prestige’.

The review is concerned with two books by Alison Chapman, professor of English at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (USA). In her first book, Chapman offers a new interpretation of J. Milton’s Paradise Lost in the context of 17th-c. English legal discourse. Chapman demonstrates that precise understanding of early European law is necessary to perceive one of the poem’s key problems— that of theodicy, summarised by Milton in the very first lines as one of his major tasks— to vindicate God’s ways in the eyes of people. The monograph mentions such characteristics of historical jurisprudence as its isolation from other disciplines, the so-called legal history ghetto. It is particularly true for interaction between legal practices and religion — the two fields that exchanged nourishing energies during Milton’s day; something barely imaginable today. Chapman’s second book focuses on Milton’s political treatises, showing how Milton achieves his goals through references to Roman, common or ecclesiastical law.

INTRODUCTION In recent years the expectation related to treating patients with metastatic melanoma has changed. Three years ago, a diagnosis of metastatic melanoma was bleak; only a small number of patients would benefit from standard treatment and the reason for treatment benefit was often unknown, leaving physicians with limited options to help their patients. Today, just 3 years later, there are proven therapies that allow physicians to expect to shrink tumors and extend the lives of their patients after diagnosis. In this article, Paul B. Chapman, MD, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, summarizes the recent advances in the field of metastatic melanoma and looks ahead to topics such as focusing on specificity, shutting down the ERK pathway, intermittent dosing, discovering driver mutations, individualizing checkpoint inhibition, and identifying rejection antigens to identify what should occur next in order to continue to improve outcomes for a larger population of patients with metastatic melanoma. Dr. Chapman's paper reminds us of the exciting progress that has been made while focusing on the work that is left in the field. Dr. Chapman is a physician-scientist who specializes in diagnosing and treating melanoma that has metastasized to other parts of the body. Dr. Chapman led a clinical trial that paved the way, in part, to the approval of vemurafenib—a drug that targets a BRAF mutation that is present in approximately 50% of patients with metastatic melanoma. Dr. Chapman is one of five Memorial Sloan Kettering scientists to be appointed to a melanoma “Dream Team” that focuses on identifying potential therapies for metastatic melanoma patients who do not have the mutated form of the BRAF gene. Dr. Chapman is also a professor of medicine at the Weill Cornell Medical College and is the chair of the Melanoma Research Alliance Medical Advisory Board. In addition to the above, Dr. Chapman is a sought-after mentor for medical oncology fellows and has a current research interest in identifying novel means to more durably block signaling in the MAPK pathway in melanoma cells. Models of a servo control strategy for projectile interception proposed by Chapman (1968) are developed in order to determine how the strategy performs in the presence of important constraints known to limit the performance of human fielders. Simulation experiments were conducted for two cases: (a) The fielder is initially in the plane of projectile motion and moves forwards and backwards in this plane—the 1D case. (b) The fielder is not initially in the plane of projectile motion—the 2D case. Simulations showed that Chapman's strategy is robust and works well in the 1D case despite various limiting constraints. Model behaviour was qualitatively similar to published data on human performance. In the 2D case the strategy works to some extent, but performance is severely limited. Including an additional control action as originally suggested by Chapman can improve matters considerably. The problem of how to distinguish use of Chapman's strategy from an alternative predictive strategy is raised. Despite considerable problems in making such a distinction, simulation studies indicated a possible observable difference. This was tested in a simple experiment: The results tended to favour Chapman's strategy but did not enable a predictive strategy to be definitively ruled out.

The Chapman–Kolmogorov equation with fractional integrals is derived. An integral of fractional order is considered as an approximation of the integral on fractal. Fractional integrals can be used to describe the fractal media. Using fractional integrals, the fractional generalization of the Chapman–Kolmogorov equation is obtained. From the fractional Chapman–Kolmogorov equation, the Fokker–Planck equation is derived.

New geomorphic, paleolimnological, and radiocarbon data suggest that a terminal moraine complex in the Northern Ogilvie Mountains, Yukon Territory, Canada, may represent the McConnell Glaciation (Late Wisconsinan), rather than the Reid Glaciation (marine isotope Stage 8; Illinoian) as previously thought. Relict fluvial channels on the surface of the moraine and analysis of a suite of lake sediment cores from Chapman Lake, a closed-basin kettle on the surface of the moraine, suggest that flow from the Blackstone River passed over the moraine and through the lake until ca. 12 500 BP, at which time the Blackstone River was captured by the East Blackstone River, diverting flow from the lake. Subsequent incision by the Blackstone River has left its base level more than 10 m below the level of Chapman Lake. Perched former outlets from Chapman Lake indicate that this incision must postdate stream capture. Because the Chapman Lake moraine is a topographic barrier across the Blackstone River valley, incision must have occurred shortly after deposition of the moraine, suggesting that the landscape surrounding Chapman Lake is substantially younger than previously thought. Additional radiocarbon dates also suggest that kettle subsidence at Chapman Lake was ongoing during the early Holocene and that North Fork Pass moraine, 15 km upvalley from the Chapman Lake moraine, may have been formed during the Late Glacial rather than the McConnell Glaciation.

Five Love Languages (FLL) is a theory proposed by Chapman (2010) about five ways a person feel most loved. This study was based on a lack of empirical evidence supporting the construct. Therefore, it aimed to validate five love languages and the results of this study were expected to be an empirical evidence to support Chapman’s idea. A Likert scale was constructed and tested toward 400 participants (148 males, 252 females; Mage = 19.85 years, SDage= 1.51 years). The FLL scale showed a promising composite reliability score ( .884) and satisfying item-total correlations (averagely > .250). Statistical analyses showed that there were 17 valid items in the Five Love Languages Scale. Confirmatory factor analysis supported the five factors in Chapman’s initial proposal.

The year 2016 witnessed the fall of a symbol of the botanical world: the historic Chapman baobab of Botswana. This article presents the results of our investigation of the standing and fallen tree. The Chapman baobab had an open ring-shaped structure composed of six partially fused stems. Several wood samples collected from the stems prior and after their collapse were analysed by using radiocarbon dating. The radiocarbon date of the oldest sample was 1381 ± 22 BP, which corresponds to a calibrated age of 1345 (+10, −15) calendar years. The dating results show that the six stems of the Chapman baobab belonged to three different generations, which were 1350–1400, 800–1000 and 500–600 years old. The growth rate variation of the largest and oldest stem is presented and correlated with the climate evolution in the area over the past 1000 years. The factors that determined the sudden fall and death of the Chapman baobab are also presented and discussed.

AbstractThis article provides one of the first studies of two late works by George Chapman, “Pro Vere” (1622) and “A iustification of a strange action of Nero” (1629). Through a close examination of these works, and through situating Chapman’s texts alongside other neglected works of the 1620s that voiced opposition to the Stuart court and kings, the article examines the critical and subversive role that classical history and gendered language played in forging ideological conflict in England during the Stuart period. More broadly, the article seeks to demonstrate the importance of studying imaginative writings for understanding Stuart political culture.

Nonlinear Markov processes are known to arise from diffusion approximations of nonlinear master equations and generalized Boltzmann equations and have been studied in their own merit in the context of nonlinear Fokker–Planck equations. Nonlinear Markov processes can account for collective phenomena, collective oscillations, and collective chaotic behavior. Despite the importance of nonlinear Markov processes for the physics of stochastic processes, relatively little is known about the Chapman–Kolmogorov equation of nonlinear Markov processes. The manuscript derives the exact solution of the Chapman–Kolmogorov equation for a recently proposed deterministic Markov model. Numerical solutions of the Chapman–Kolmogorov equation are used to demonstrate the nonlinear semi-group property of conditional probabilities of nonlinear Markov processes.
