u.s. mediation towards resolving the Arab-Israeli conflict in the 1970s and Balkan conflicts in the 1990s may not seem comparable at first. Differences between these conflicts in terms of history, duration and dynamics abound. The nature and level of u.s. involvement provides further contrasts. Yet, the Camp David negotiations in 1978 and the Dayton Peace Talks in 1995 offer striking parallels in terms of third-party mediator actions undertaken. This article compares the two summits by applying the analytic framework developed by Curran, Sebenius and Watkins to categorize third party mediator strategies. The analysis builds on this framework and deduces common tactics employed by third-party mediators at Camp David and Dayton.

Patrick was one of a dedicated group of teachers whose enjoyment of disputation became legendary in the School of Humanities. Together, they created a rich and innovative curriculum; individually, they made distinctive contributions to scholarship in their disciplines. In Australian studies, Pat Buckridge worked with Gillian Whitlock, David Carter, Mark Finnane, Stephen Garton and Chilla Bulbeck; and later, as he developed courses in ‘Great Books’, with Belinda McKay. Pat was to become a head of the School of Humanities, and he was the last Dean of that faculty before a restructure saw it disappear.

This article is based on an interview conducted in July 2018 with Aharon Barak. In it, Barak reflects on the peace negotiations with Egypt at Camp David during 13 days in September 1978. While expressing great appreciation for the American negotiating team, first and foremost for President Jimmy Carter, for bringing the talks to a successful close, Barak considers negotiating with Carter as the toughest experience of his life. According to Barak, who had just completed his role as legal advisor to the government (1975–1978) and was appointed to the Supreme Court, the key people in the Israeli delegation were Menachem Begin, Moshe Dayan, and Ezer Weizman, while the key players in the Egyptian delegation were Anwar Sadat and Osama El-Baz. The negotiations went through ups and downs and had reached the brink of collapse until the Americans proposed that Carter negotiate directly with El-Baz and Barak. In the article’s conclusion, some important insights are deduced from this interview for future, successful negotiations.

This paper purports to contribute to the development of a theory of international mediation by considering, in some detail, the experience at Camp David and more specifically the role of President Carter. The uniqueness of this event cannot of course be ignored, but even unique cases can contribute to theory development especially if they are considered as one of a class of events. Single cases can provide a powerful impetus to the development of a general explanation as long as they are historically grounded and their description is not couched in purely idiosyncratic terms.

Since the release of Gabriel Garciá Márquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude, Magical Realism has been in favour as a narrative style or genre in adult fiction. The representation of the genre in children’s and juvenile literature, on the other hand, is a recent trend; the components of the genre have been tracked and proven to be genuinely important in the interpretation of current children’s fiction, such as David Almond’s Skelling (1998). The aim of this paper is to look at the elements of magical realism in Neil Gaiman’s Coraline and Angela Carter’s Nights at the Circus works in this respect.

Abstract. The first recipient of the Brady Medal, which was presented on 7 November 2007, is Professor John W. Murray of the National Oceanographic Centre, University of Southampton. The awardee is singularly appropriate as Henry Bowman Brady studied (mainly benthic) foraminifera. John was also one of the speakers at the first open meeting of the then British Micropalaeontological Group when it met at Sheffield University in March 1971 under the Chairmanship of Professor Leslie R. Moore (one of the founding fathers of the TMS). Other speakers on that day included Charles Downie, Alan Higgins, Keith Gueinn, Eric Robinson, Ron Austin, Geoff Warrington, Gerry Orbell, Malcolm Hart, Geoff Eaton and Mike Boulter.John was born in London in 1937 and was evacuated to the north of England during the Second World War. The family returned south to Worthing in 1953. As a teenager John asked his parents for a biological microscope with which he developed his interest in microscopy (both biological and geological). In 1956 he enrolled on the BSc (Hons) Geology programme at Imperial College (London University) in the first year of which he was introduced to foraminifera by David Carter, who also supervised a final year project on the planktonic foraminifera recovered from one of the early boreholes for the Channel Tunnel Site Investigation. For his PhD research (again supervised by David Carter) John elected to study the benthic foraminifera of Christchurch Harbour in Dorset. This involved regular sampling of the harbour sediments, staining the living foraminifera and taking measurements . . .

In Performing Metaphors: The Singularity of Literary Figuration Derek Attridge redefi nes the work of art in terms of alterity, invention and singularity. For a given work of art to occur, it must be performed, that is, justice must be done to it as a literary event and as the eventness of that event. One of the most vital features of the (process of) performance of literature is metaphor, argues Attridge, adducing various works, from philosophy (David Hume) to poetry (Robert Graves) to everyday spoken speech (quoted by a cognitive linguist, Ronald Carter) to prove his point.

Acolleague invited me to visit her kindergarten class during mathematics time. When I entered the room, I was not sure whether the class was having snack time or math time; clearly, however, the children were actively engaged in the assigned task. The students were seated at tables in groups of three and four. Each group had a plastic bag filled with animal crackers and was negotiating a solution to a problem. Before I arrived, the teacher had read the story Snack Attack by David Carter (1990), a pop-up book recounting a young child's imaginary encounter with animal crackers that appear to come to life only to be eaten as a snack.

David A. Carter’s abstract pop-up books, identified as being “for children of all ages,” share qualities with the art of Alexander Calder, whose mobiles are often called “childlike.” In particular, both artists diverge from the conventions of their crafts by introducing moveable elements and by implying how they should be moved, and discussions of each of them often connect their mobility with ideas about childlikeness. As well as exploring the relationship between mobility and childlikeness in Calder’s and Carter’s works, this essay explores the connections between those qualities in the discussion of children’s literature and art more generally.

Dunn and David Woodward in The conservative tradition in America, the dramatic Republican gains in the 1994 elections exemplified the eclilse of New Deal liberalism by a resurgent conservatism, a politcal shift that began in the late 1960s and which Ronald Reagan's victory in the 1980 fortified. In their short survey the authors investigate the intellectual roots of modern conservatism and attempt to define and explain the recent manifestation of this heritage. The three other recent works reviewed here provide a larger historical context, which Dunn and Woodward ignore, for understanding conservatism and right extremism in America.

AbstractThis paper concerns the relationship between epistemology and radically extended cognition. Radically extended cognition (REC) – as advanced by Andy Clark and David Chalmers – is cognition that is partly located outside the biological boundaries of the cognizing subject. Epistemologists have begun to wonder whether REC has any consequences for theories of knowledge. For instance, while Duncan Pritchard suggests that REC might have implications for which virtue epistemology is acceptable, J. Adam Carter wonders whether REC threatens anti-luck epistemology. In this paper, I argue that the possibility of REC has no systematic consequences for theorizing in epistemology. I suggest an alternative relationship between the two: epistemology can play a role in diagnosing cases of REC. Thus, by establishing that entities partially located outside biological boundaries don't play certain epistemic roles, one can establish that they don't play the related cognitive roles either. I conclude the paper by illustrating this last point.

The approach taken also engages with a generalization of David Roediger’s wages of whiteness approach, Marxist feminism, Angela Davis’s Marxist black feminism, Rosa Luxemburg, Kylie Jarrett’s concept of the digital housewife, Jack Qiu’s notion of iSlavery, Eileen Meehan’s concept of the gendered audience commodity, and Carter Wilson and Audrey Smedley’s historical analyses of racism and class. The article presents a typology of differences and commonalities between wage-labour, slave-labour, reproductive labour, and Facebook labour. It shows that the digital data commodity is both gendered and racialized. It analyses how class, patriarchy, slavery, and racism overgrasp into each other in the realm of digital capitalism. It also introduces the notions of the organic composition of labour and the rate of reproductive labour and shows, based on example data, how to calculate these ratios that provide insights into the reality of unpaid labour in capitalism.

The importance of studying the personality of US Secretary of State Cyrus Vance during the era of President Jimmy Carter (1977-1980), as it is an important figure in the History of the United States of America, and he played an important Role in US Foreign Policy during this Period. The most prominent of his works was his contribution to the Camp David Agreement in 1978, and the Egyptian-(Israeli) peace treaty in 1979, and then the decision to submit his resignation from his position due to his objection to the decision of the military option to release American hostages held by Iran in 1980.Vance completed his university studies in 1939. He was conscripted directly into the military service and remained there Until 1945, after Which he went to Work in a law firm Until he became one of the Partners in the firm, In 1957 he was Chosen as a lawyer in one of The Committees of the US senate. He gained a high reputation within the United States and being a member of the Democratic Party Nominated Vance became the director of the Administration in the US Department of Defense during the era of President John F. Kennedy. In 1962 Vance became the Second Deputy Secretary of Defense, Robert McNamara, and then Vance became Deputy Secretary of Defense in 1936. While working in this position, he contributed to solve many Foreign Issues including his Role in Panama and the Canal Crisis, and his Role in Restoring Security to the Dominican Republic following the American intervention. In 1965 and in 1967, Vance resigned from his Position following his Opposition to the Decision to intervene in the United States in Vietnam. He returned to the legal Profession, but President Lyndon Johnson chose him in 1967 as his special delegate. He contributed to solving many international issues, including the Cyprus Issue in 1967, the Korean Peninsula Crisis in 1968 and his role in the Paris talks in 1968 to end the War in Vietnam. In 1974, he became President of the New York City Bar Association and in 1977 President Carter nominated him for the position of Secretary of State.

The weakening of specific sections of a structure in order to change them into reliable energy dissipative zones in case of an earthquake is an idea which was developed in principle in the 1980s by the author of the present paper. During a research project sponsored by the Luxembourg based steel producer ARBED and the European Union, the idea was tested and validated as concerns its contribution to ductility. Because weakening a structure, even locally, might have negative influences, other analyses were also performed during the same research and later on by David (1990). At that time, ARBED filed a patent on the reduced beam section (RBS) or "dogbone" concept, but, after the Northridge earthquake, waived any licensing fees and claims. This certainly encourages the development of this technique. Research efforts are now being made in many places in the United States to define the best applicability conditions for dogbones, in particular their geometry. In a recent paper in this Journal, Iwankiw and Carter (1996) presented test results based on this idea, whose time has come. In order to further its applications, existing European data, some of which were published by the Commission of the European Community (1992) in the report on the research mentioned above, some published in conference proceedings by Plumier (1990), some unpublished, are presented here.

Lasnier, Joseph M., David H. Ingbar, Ethan P. Carter, Kirk Wilson, Scott McKnite, Keith G. Lurie, and O. Douglas Wangensteen.Perfusion technique determines alveolar fluid resorption rate in the isolated perfused rat lung. J. Appl. Physiol. 84(2): 740–745, 1998.—The isolated perfused lung (IPL) preparation is a well-established model for the study of alveolar epithelial sodium transport. We noted that preparations of normal fluid-filled rat lungs with recirculated perfusate reproducibly lost weight, whereas preparations in which the perfusate was discarded after a single pass through the lungs had a variable and lesser weight change. To confirm this, we performed IPL experiments by using male Sprague-Dawley specific-pathogen-free rats (175–225 g). In 10 IPLs, perfusate initially was discarded after passing through the lungs and then was recirculated continuously. During the single-pass period, the rate of weight change was +0.7 ± 2.0 mg/min compared with −9.0 ± 1.3 mg/min for the recirculating period. Adenosine 3′,5′-cyclic monophosphate (cAMP) accumulated during recirculation. The weight loss induced by recirculation was reproduced by perfusion with 8-bromoadenosine 3′,5′-cyclic monophosphate or terbutaline in single-pass fashion and blocked when the kinase inhibitor H-8 or phosphodiesterase was present in the recirculating perfusate. In summary, perfusate recirculation in the IPL stimulates fluid resorption at least partially via cAMP. This should be factored into the design and interpretation of IPL experiments.
