The imposing and romantic remains of the Tiberian palace on the eastern heights of Capri are now visited by relatively few people, and it is often possible to wander among the ruins for an hour or more without meeting another soul. Yet for about a decade, from A.D. 27 to 37, this villa seems to have been the principal residence of the emperor of the Roman world, and Capri, together with Rome, the administrative centre of that world. As imperial residence, as administrative centre, and as a typical Campanian villa, this and the other imperial buildings on Capri must have been thronged with people, from the emperor's family and friends to the palace staff to administrative personnel. It is the purpose of this paper to consider Tiberius' stay on Capri in various contexts, especially that of the people who were on the island with him, in order to understand more clearly what his life there was like.

Some migratory birds have advanced their spring arrival to Northern Europe, possibly by increasing the speed of migration through Europe in response to increased temperature en route. In this paper we compare the phenology of spring arrival of seven trans-Saharan migrants along their migration route and test for patterns indicating that migration speed varied over the season using long-term data collected on the Italian island of Capri and at Ottenby Bird Observatory, Sweden. There was a linear relationship between median arrival dates on Capri and at Ottenby. The slope was not significantly different from one. On average, the seven species arrived 15 days later at Ottenby compared to Capri. There was a (non-significant) negative relationship between the species-specific arrival dates at Capri and the differences in median arrival dates between Capri and Ottenby, possibly indicating a tendency towards faster migration through Europe later in the season. To what extent different species are able to speed up their migration to benefit from the advancement of spring events is unknown.

We trapped birds on the island of Capri, SW Italy, during February and earliest March 2002—2004 and in November—December 2004. The trapped birds were ringed, and common biometrical parameters measured. In total 247 birds of 17 species were trapped, a rather limited number, whereof c. 70% were either European Robins Erithacus rubecula, Blackcaps Sylvia atricapilla, Sardinian Warblers Sylvia melanocephala or Chiffchaffs Phylloscopus collybita. Although the majority of birds handled were probably settled winterers, variations in the trapping figures and cases of high body masses and fat scores suggested that in late November and December some birds may still have been en route for areas further south – and that already in late February some, particularly evident in Chiffchaffs, were on their way north again. The comparatively mild winter climate on the island of Capri may be mirrored by the lower body masses of Robins trapped by us there, compared to birds wintering on the Italian mainland which probably put on some extra fat as insurance against spells of cold weather.

Migratory birds are assumed to be under strong selection pressure during migration. It is generally assumed that many species are maximizing speed of migration because of the benefits from arriving early at the breeding grounds. Males’ incentives are to occupy the best territories before they are occupied by competitors. Females breeding early usually have a greater reproductive success. In this study, the stopover behaviour of the Wood Warbler is studied on Capri, a Mediterranean island in southwest Italy. Movements of birds on the island are from higher elevations with sparse vegetation, where they presumably arrive, to low elevations with more dense vegetation. Males were found to migrate earlier than females, but were also staying much shorter time than females on the island. Males were estimated to stay on average slightly more than one hour whereas females stayed on average thirteen hours. The results suggest that Capri is not an important refueling site for the Wood Warbler and that males are more inclined to quickly leave this poor stopover site than females.

The CNR, within the “Masgaba” project, contributes to the archaeological mapping of Capri. This initiative involves survey activities, historical-architectural studies, and the creation of detailed graphic documentation integrated into a Geographic Information System (GIS). Surveys employ advanced technologies, such as laser scanning and photogrammetry. The resultant 3D models contribute to site documentation and analysis. This study advocates the use of a methodological approach reliant on precise measurements and thorough planimetric surveys achieved through instrumental techniques to investigate and comprehend archaeological remnants with a high degree of certainty. By combining this with careful examination of walls and construction techniques, historical phases and space functions can be defined. The examination of three archaeological sites in Capri, Grotta dell’Arsenale, Villa of Gradola, and Villa of Damecuta, exemplifies this approach.

Mycoplasma mycoides subspecies capri (Mmc) is one of the six Mycoplasma mycoides cluster (Mm cluster) members, which can cause “MAKePS” (Mastitis, Arthritis, Keratoconjunctivitis, Pneumonia, Septicemia) syndrome in ruminants. These symptoms can occur alone or together in individuals or flocks of goats. However, little is known about the epidemic Mmc strains in Hainan Island, China. We aimed to isolate the endemic Mmc strains in Hainan Island and reveal their molecular characteristics by genomic sequencing and comparative genomics to mitigate the impact of Mmc on local ruminant farming. Here, the Mmc HN-A strain was isolated and identified for the first time in Hainan Island, China. The genome of Mmc HN-A was sequenced. It contains a 1,084,691 bp-long circular chromosome and 848 coding genes. The genomic analysis of Mmc HN-A revealed 16 virulence factors, 2 gene islands, and a bacterial type IV secretion system protein VirD4. Comparative genomics showed that the core genome of the five Mycoplasma mycoides contained 611 genes that could be exploited to develop drugs and endemic vaccines. Additionally, 36 specific genes were included in the Mmc HN-A genome, which could provide the possibility for the further control and prevention of the Mmc effects on local ruminants and enrich the information on Mmc strains.

The Capri Bird Observatory is situated in Castello Barbarossa, an old fortification overlooking the Bay of Naples in southwestern Italy. The observatory was founded in 1956 by the Swedish Ornithological Society in cooperation with Villa San Michele. Until the mid- 1980s it was entirely a Swedish venture, whereafter also Italian ornithologists joined, first the LIPU bird protection organization, later the ringing center in Bologna through its Piccole Isole project. The aim was to study bird migration between winter quarters in tropical Africa and breeding areas around the Baltic Sea. The main concern has been spring migration, when many birds make landfall on the island after having crossed the Mediterranean. But work has also been done in autumns, and in later years even in winters. To the general study of bird migration, including ringing and the sampling of various biometric and phenological parameters, have been added more specialized studies, like visual observations of raptor migration, experiments on bird orientation, and sampling for the study of bird-born diseases. Recently, studies of butterfly migration have been added to the agenda.

This paper presents and analyses autumn migration data on phenology and biometrics for 12 species of birds trapped at the Capri Bird Observatory, south-western Italy. The material has been collected over 15 years, mainly in two periods, 1959—1963 and 1994—2004. The passage of trans-Saharan migrants (like the Garden Warbler Sylvia borin) peaks in late September and these birds generally carry moderate to large fat stores, some probably large enough for the full journey to just south of the desert. The short-distance migrants that are mainly due to winter in the Mediterranean region (like the Robin Erithacus rubecula) arrive later, around the beginning of October, and carry less fuel deposits. Mainly resident birds (like the Sardinian Warbler Sylvia melanocephala) do not build up any substantial fat reserves and their phenologies do not indicate much migratory movement.

The proposed article ponders upon Krystian Lupa’s Capri—an island of refugees (2019), an original production staged at the Powszechny Theatre in Warsaw that brings together two of Curzio Malaparte’s prose books: Kaputt (1944) and The Skin (1949). By focusing on the parts of the production that adapt Kaputt, the article scrutinizes scenes produced by the live performance and the virtual projections in order to describe and explain how theatrical expression is enriched by such a juxtaposition. This analysis uses the theoretical frameworks of unnatural narratology (Jan Alber et al.), postdramatic durational aesthetics (Hans-Thies Lehmann), and the idea of the virtual double (Matthew Causey). The primary argument relies on the specific temporality emerging from the Lupa’s performance that enables spectators to feel existence within and beyond time. Furthermore, the study investigates the overarching idea of the performance, recognized by the strategy of foregrounding the thematic that oscillates within the problematics of human cruelty.

Following the introduction of a phenomenological cellular automata (CA) model capable to reproduce city growth and urban sprawl, we develop a toy model simulation considering a realistic framework. The main characteristic of our approach is an evolution algorithm based on inhabitants preferences. The control of grown cells is obtained by means of suitable functions which depend on the initial condition of the simulation. New born urban settlements are achieved by means of a logistic evolution of the urban pattern while urban sprawl is controlled by means of the population evolution function. In order to compare model results with a realistic urban framework we have considered, as the area of study, the island of Capri (Italy) in the Mediterranean Sea. Two different phases of the urban evolution on the island have been taken into account: a new born initial growth as induced by geographic suitability and the simulation of urban spread after 1943 induced by the population evolution after this date.

In 1932 a number of soviet ideologues, at the behest of Stalin, declared Maxim Gorky the founder of Socialist Realism. Transformed into an ideological brand that endures to this day, the label makes it difficult to clearly delineate the politician from the talented artist in search of a new method of creation in Russian literature. The autobiographical trilogy (My Childhood, In the World and My Universities) is written in the tradition of romantic literature and highlights the national importance of politically committed works. The first part of the trilogy was written in exile. After the defeat of the Revolution of 1905 in which Gorky took an active part, emigration was an acceptable and even profitable option. Recollecting aspects of his childhood was an exercise that Gorky practiced voluntarily and consciously during 1912-1913 in Italy on the island of Capri, working deliberately and attentively after the autobiographical subject was brought up in a discussion with Lenin during the latter's visit to the island. Based on the autobiographical text in the novel My Childhood, our study aims to highlight the process of gradual liberation of the New Man from the Old Order and probe the sources of a new attitude towards the social and moral norms of life.

In recent years the issue of touristification has been progressively discussed in relation to its impact on historic towns. In this regard, physical transformations and gentrification consequences are both issues often addressed. In Italy, consciousness on the subject primarily grew in relation to Florence and Venice, both national cases widely discussed also on newspapers. The awareness of a wider range of cases affected by this problem, from big cities to small holiday destinations, is even more recent. The aim of the present paper is to address Capri’s touristification process, which started in the last decades of the nineteenth century and exploded in the second half of the twentieth century, from the point of view of the field of study of history and conservation of cultural heritage and landscape. Therefore, this process and some of its consequences on the island’s cultural landscape and identity are thoroughly analyzed. The paper starts with a brief introduction to the island and its history, which is necessary in order to highlight its rich cultural heritage and the slow pace at which Capri has grown over time as a fishermen island to suddenly transforming into a touristic destination during the last century. Finally, the current touristic vocation and the consequences on Capri’s natural and built environment are discussed, with the aim of individuating if and why there have already been losses and what should be done to prevent this negative process from going on.

The IOCDC is an annual meeting which brings together the world's leading experts in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and related disorders in a small workshop setting to present recent research advances, discuss gaps in our current knowledge, and plan or international approaches that address these knowledge gaps. The IOCDC meetings have been held on islands on both sides of the Atlantic—Capri, Guadeloupe, Madeira, and now St. Thomas. The International Organizing Committee consists of Eric Hollander, MD (USA), Joseph Zohar, MD (Israel), and Donatella Marazziti, MD (Italy). The proceedings are generously supported by an unrestricted educational grant from Solvay Pharmaceuticals Inc. and Solvay Pharmaceuticals, and we would like to acknowledge the very important contributions of Chantal Vekens and Mary Blangiardo of Solvay. Also, an mportant part of the success of these meetings stems from the very active role of the chairpersons and cochairpersons of the workshops who lead the discussions, who synthesize the future directions and prepare the manuscripts that result from these discussions that appear in this academic supplement. The meeting led off with a state-of-the-art plenary address by Mark George, MD (USA), describing how new methods of brain stimulation are improving research and therapy in OCD and promise to revolutionize neuropsychiatric research and herapy over the next decade. He describes how transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is used to test the circuits in OCD and test electrophysiologic evaluations of cortical inhibition n OCD. Newer techniques that are less invasive than ablative surgery and appear promising in OCD therapy include vagus nerve stimulation and deep brain stimulation.

Rhodolith beds (RBs) are bioconstructions characterized by coralline algae, which provide habitat for several associated species. Mediterranean RBs are usually located in the mesophotic zone (below 40 m), and thus are frequently remote and unexplored. Recently, the importance and vulnerability of these habitats have been recognized by the European Community and more attention has been drawn to their investigation and conservation. This study reports the results of an extensive monitoring program, carried out within the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (2008/56/EC), in six sites off the Campania coast (Italy, Mediterranean Sea). New insights were given into the distribution, cover, vitality (i.e., live/dead rhodolith ratio), structural complexity, and coralline algae composition of RBs. Remotely operated vehicles (ROV) investigations allowed the description of several RBs, and the discovery of a RB with rhodolith cover >65% offshore the Capri Island. Only two sites (Secchitiello and Punta Campanella) showed a very low mean cover of live rhodoliths (<10%); hence, not being classifiable as RBs. The collected rhodoliths were mostly small pralines (~2 cm), spheroidal to ellipsoidal, with growth-forms ranging from encrusting/warty to fruticose/lumpy. Coralline algae identification revealed a high diversity within each bed, with a total of 13 identified taxa. The genus Lithothamnion dominated all sites, and Phymatolithon calcareum and Lithothamnion corallioides, protected by the Habitats Directive (92/43/EEC), were detected in all RBs.

In Naples (Italy), the passage from Renaissance to Baroque architectonic language could be identified between 1580 and 1612. During this era, one of the most significant topics of the architectonic research on the sacred space was the right compromise among the Counter-Reformation patterns, the central space and the oval plan. Giovanni Antonio Dosio and Dionisio di Bartolomeo were the most representative architects of this passage. They provide the access to new experimental varieties. So, when the architect Cosimo Fanzago arrived in Naples in 1612, the city was almost ready to use the emblematic ellipse plan of the Baroque, such as the churches Santa Maria della Sanita` and San Giovanni dei Fiorentini by Fra’ Nuvolo prove. Fanzago’s architectonic research was followed by the studies by Bartolomeo and Francesco Antonio Picchiatti, father and son, up to Domenico Antonio Vaccaro that was the most representative director of the Baroque sacred space scene. Moving from the analysis and comparison of the most representative churches of Neapolitans Baroque era, the paper proposes an unedited studio about the evolution of sacred space’s idea related to decoration, symbology and allegory, with a focus on Domenico Antonio Vaccaro’s works, such as the churches of Santa Maria della Concezione in Montecalvario neighbourhood, San Michele Arcangelo in Naples’ Piazza Dante, San Michele in Anacapri (on Capri Island), the Palazzo Abbaziale di Loreto and Saviour Church in San Guglielmo al Goleto Monastery, both near Avellino.

"Starting with Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s vision, who acclaimed that ‘Music is liquid architecture; architecture is frozen music’ , this is an investigation that touches subthemes as a psychological analysis of the characters from the film « Le Mépris » (by Jean-Luc Godard, 1963), made after the eponym novel «Il disprezzo» by Alberto Moravia (1954); an analysis into the music of the film composed by Georges Delerue (1925-1992) – « Thème de Camille », an investigation in George Delerue’s music and other iconic songs from the decade’s atmosphere; a short philosophical introduction into the universe of the architect Curzio Malaparte (1898-1957) and ʻCasa Malaparteʼ from Capri Island. Said so, ʻCasa Malaparteʼ is bought into analysis through the aesthetical-architectural filter of some nowadays epic mansions/residences from Laval, Montréal, Las Vegas, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Bucharest-Kiseleff-Aviatorilor area, which are included in the architectural research-portfolio. More than this, we try to check how architectural structures sculpture the musicalized Being’s essences using examples such as Belle Abri, Villa Cèdres, Villa Astor, Palazzo di Amore, Villa Leopolda, Villa D. Ionescu, Bel-Air, and other magnifiques villas that seem aesthetically very close to Casa Malaparte. In addition, this paper answers the following fundamental questions: Why, sometimes, the music saves/repairs the architectural existentialism? And why is it so important for architecture to create and re-create permanent music? The paper opens and enriches a collaborative research niche between architecture, music, analysis-methods from philosophy field, and the applied philosophies ʻbehindʼ the real estate portfolios; This paper is an exploration of the beautiful universe of some representative mansions, outlining the ineluctable liaison between sonorous structures and architectural structures, highlighting that the vision of Wolfgang Goethe is still alive in the buildings that surround our cities. This paper is a research realised between 2021 and 2022, and it combines observations from philosophy, architecture, literature, music, and real estate’s domain. Eighteen non-marine mammal species (including seven species of bats) were recorded from a total of 49 islands in the Wessel and English Company island chains off north-eastern Arnhem Land, Northern Territory. Most individual species were restricted to, or had higher incidence on, larger islands, and species richness as a whole increased as island size increased. The most notable exception was the semi-aquatic Hydromys chrysogaster, which occurred relatively equitably across island sizes; this species, two bat species and the macropod Petrogale brachyotis were recorded from islands smaller than 10 ha. However, the variation between islands in the number of native terrestrial mammal species was not best predicted by island size, but rather by a combination of sampling effort and altitude (which explained 64% of the deviance in species richness), or altitude and distance to larger land mass (explaining 63% of deviance). Richness–area patterns for individual islands in these chains were reasonably consistent with those of other islands sampled in northern Australia. However, the fauna of the Wessel and English Company groups as a whole was less rich than that of the Pellew and Kimberley islands, and individual islands appeared to have lower species richness than comparable mainland areas. Species that were notably absent or that were recorded from relatively few islands include large macropods, Tachyglossus aculeatus, Antechinus bellus, Phascogale tapoatafa, Sminthopsis spp., Mesembriomys gouldii, Rattus colletti, Leggadina lakedownensis and Pseudomys calabyi. Some of these species may be absent through lack of suitable habitat; others have presumably disappeared since isolation, possibly due to Aboriginal hunting. Richness at the quadrat (50 × 50 m) scale was generally very low. Habitat relationships are described for the 7 species recorded from more than 5 quadrats. At a quadrat-scale, the richness of native mammals was greater on islands larger than 1000 ha than on islands smaller than 1000 ha. Quadrat-scale species richness varied significantly among the islands sampled by the most quadrats (even when the comparison was restricted to either of the two most extensive vegetation types), but this variation was not closely related to either area or altitude. The two most frequently recorded species, the rodents Melomys burtoni and Zyzomys argurus, showed distinct habitat segregation on islands where both were present, but tended to expand their habitat range on islands where only one of the species occurred. The most notable conservation feature of the mammal fauna of the Wessel and English Company Islands is the occurrence of the golden bandicoot, Isoodon auratus, a vulnerable species apparently now extinct on the Northern Territory mainland. Four feral animal species (Rattus rattus, Canis familiaris, Bubalus bubalis and Capra hircus) were recorded from a total of 6 islands.

A survey of Mariana Fruit Bats Pteropus mariannus and feral ungulates was conducted on Anatahan, Mariana Islands, in July 1995. We estimated that a population of 1 902-2 136 bats persists on the island, based on a combination of direct colony counts, departure counts, and station counts of non-colonial animals. Our data suggest that bat numbers have declined since the last surveys were made in 1983 and 1984. We located seven colonies, which held approximately 85-92% of the total population. Most colonies and foraging animals were associated with native forest or isolated native trees in other habitats. Bats fed on five species of plants, with the fruit of Pandanus tectorius eaten most frequently. Anatahan supports a very large Feral Goat Capra hircus population estimated at roughly 5 000-6 000 animals. Feral Pigs Sus scrofa are less common. Both species cause severe damage to plant communities of the island. We recommend that a legal hunting programme for fruit bats be deferred until 1) population censuses on neighbouring islands are completed and it is determined that bat populations can sustain harvesting, 2) habitat degradation is reversed through the control of feral animals, and 3) illegal hunting is curtailed.

A brief visit to Monuriki, an island in Fiji’s Mamanuca group was completed in March-April 2011 to gather baseline data on the island’s population of Wedge-tailed Shearwaters Puffinus pacificus prior to the eradication of alien invasive Polynesian Rat Rattus exulans and feral goats Capra hircus from the island in December 2011. We estimated an island-wide population of 2,000-5,500 pairs of Wedge-tailed Shearwaters, the largest population recorded in Fiji. Productivity was estimated to be 40%. It is anticipated these baseline figures will be used to assess the impacts that the removal of invasive mammals has on the population.

Palearctic-African spring migrants are faced with the challenging crossing of the double ecological barrier of the Sahara Desert and the Mediterranean Sea. Islands represent unique opportunities to stopover and rest during these prolonged endurance flights. To study spring migration across the Mediterranean, the Italian Ringing Centre at INFS has co-ordinated the Progetto Piccole Isole since 1988 with Capri being among the most active stations. Islands are used as stopover sites by huge numbers of birds belonging to a wide range of species and irrespective of physical conditions of migrants. Clearly defined species-specific seasonal migration patterns are observed, and also differential migration of sex and age classes. Wide-front movements over the sea of typical nocturnal migrants occur also during daytime. Physiological studies confirm the importance of the short stopovers observed on the islands, which permit the birds to adjust their metabolic state, rest and rely, in many cases, on easily accessible nectar as an energetically rich food. Strong links with habitats both in Africa and within the Mediterranean confirm the need for internationally coordinated conservation strategies for Palearctic-African migrants.

Extreme rainfall accompanied by strong winds hit the province of Bengkulu in the western coastal area of Sumatera Island during September 19-20, 2017, causing floods and landslides in Seluma and Central Bengkulu district. This extreme rainfall was recorded by Bengkulu Meteorological Station about 257.0 mm day−1 using rain-gauge observation. The spatial distribution of extreme rainfall cannot be seen if only using a rain-gauge observation in this location. The spatial distribution of extreme rainfall is needed to identify the impact of rainfall on landslides in large areas. The study aims to (1) develop the reconstruction of the spatial distribution of extreme rainfall using weather radar and (2) investigate the trigger that caused extreme rainfall by analyzing the synoptic-scale tropical waves. Each weather radar datum is saved in a Constant Altitude Plan Position Indicator (CAPPI). To get rainfall information, the CAPPI must be derived from Quantitative Precipitation Estimation (QPE) values. In this paper, we derived CAPPI using a Marshall-Palmer reflectivity-rain rate relationship. The result shows that rainfall formed on September 20, 2017, 21.00 UTC with total daily rainfall ranged between 176 and 247 mm in both districts and the mean of total daily rainfall has exceeded the average of monthly rainfall. The analysis of tropical waves suggests that only Kelvin waves were active and served as a possible trigger factor while the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) and Equatorial Rossby (ER) waves were inactive during this extreme rainfall.

Between 1998 and 2002, 27 ‘endangered’ Proserpine rock-wallabies Petrogale persephone were introduced from the Queensland mainland to Hayman Island. Site release selection was based on faunal, botanical, geological and ecological surveys carried out before the release. The eradication of a feral herbivorous competitor, the feral goat (Capra hircus), allowed the introduction to proceed. Eagle predation in the early part of the introduction necessitated all further introductions be carried out by soft release. Between 1999 and 2000, monitoring and non-invasive video surveillance has shown that this introduced population is breeding.

Hallasan Mountain is located at the center of Jeju Island, Korea. Even though the height of the mountain is just 1,950 m, the orographic effect is strong enough to cause heavy rainfall. In this study, a rainfall event, due to Typhoon Nakri in 2014, observed in Jeju Island was analyzed fully using the radar and rain gauge data. First, the Z-R relationship Z=ARb was derived for every 250 m interval from the sea level to the mountain top. The resulting Z-R relationships showed that the exponent b could be assumed as constant but that the parameter A showed a significant decreasing trend up to an altitude around 1,000 m before it increased again. The orographic effect was found to be most significant at this altitude of 1,000 m. Second, the derived Z-R relationships were applied to the corresponding altitude radar reflectivity data to generate the rain rate field over Jeju Island. This rain rate field was then used to derive the areal-average rain rate data. These data were found to be very similar to the rain gauge estimates but were significantly different from those derived from the application of the Marshall-Palmer equation to the 1.5 km CAPPI data, which is the data type that is generally used by the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA).

Extreme weather in the form of heavy rainfall hit Bangka Island, Indonesia on 10 - 11 March 2018 caused flooding in some areas such as in Pangkal Pinang and Muntok in Bangka Barat District, Air Asam Belinyu in Bangka Induk District, and Koba in Bangka Tengah District. Observation of weather conditions at Pangkal Pinang Meteorological Station on 10 March 2018 recorded temperature ranged from 23 to 25°C; relative humidity (RH) ranged from 91 to 100% and measured rainfall reached 84.4 mm/day. In Muntok, the measured rainfall reached 257.5 mm/day which exceeds the March average rainfall 250 mm/month. This study aims to reconstruct this extreme rainfall using C-Band Doppler weather radar centered in Palembang, South Sumatera Province with Python-wradlib library. Weather radar images were displayed in Constant Altitude Plan Position Indicator (CAPPI) and Quantitative Precipitation Estimation (QPE) temporal analysis was performed in areas of extreme rainfall by applying the Marshall-Palmer reflectivity-rain rate (Z-R) relationship. The analysis was conducted by observing the movement and growth of convective clouds through the Palembang radar over Bangka Island and identifying the regional extreme rainfall using Indonesia In-House Radar Integration System (IIRIS) over Sumatra Island. The results suggest that the reconstructed rainfall reached 236.7 mm/day for Muntok, 92.1 mm/day for Pangkal Pinang, 106.0 mm/day for Koba and 80.8 mm/day for Air Asam Belinyu. Although most of the location sites are more than 200 km from the radar center, both of the reconstructed and measured rainfall is well comparable.

Abstract. The western Indian Ocean has been warming rapidly over recent decades, causing a greater number of extreme climatic events. It is therefore of paramount importance to improve our understanding of links between Indian Ocean sea surface temperature (SST) variability, climate change and sustainability of tropical coral reef ecosystems. Here we present monthly resolved coral Sr ∕ Ca records from two different locations from Rodrigues Island (63° E, 19° S) in the south-central Indian Ocean trade wind belt. We reconstruct SST based on a linear relationship with the Sr ∕ Ca proxy with records starting from 1781 and 1945, respectively. We assess relationships between the observed long-term SST and climate fluctuations related to the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), the Subtropical Indian Ocean Dipole Mode (SIOD) and the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) between 1945 and 2006, respectively. The reproducibility of the Sr ∕ Ca records is assessed as are the potential impacts of diagenesis and corallite orientation on Sr ∕ Ca–SST reconstructions. We calibrate individual robust Sr ∕ Ca records with in situ SST and various gridded SST products. The results show that the SST record from Cabri provides the first Indian Ocean coral proxy time series that records the SST signature of the PDO in the south-central Indian Ocean since 1945. We suggest that additional records from Rodrigues Island can provide excellent records of SST variations in the southern Indian Ocean trade wind belt to unravel teleconnections with the SIOD/ENSO/PDO on longer timescales.

Ticks and transmitted pathogens constitute a major concern for livestock health/welfare and productivity for the Mediterranean region, often posing an important zoonotic threat. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence, infection intensity, and seasonality of ticks and tick-borne pathogens on the island of Lesvos in Greece, which was selected as a potential hotspot for their circulation. To this end, 101 sheep farms were visited over a tick activity season, and ticks, blood samples, and questionnaire data were collected. Ticks were identified by species, and DNA from both ticks and blood samples was further investigated using the polymerase chain reaction–reverse line blot (PCR–RLB) technique. In 72.3% of the farms, sheep were found to be infected by 9 ixodid species, with Rhipicephalus turanicus being the most common during the spring/early summer period. As regards tick-borne pathogens (TBPs), 84.9% of the animals were found to be infected with at least one pathogen, the most common being genera of Anaplasma and Theileria, alone or in co-infections. To further characterize the Anaplasma species found, selected samples were sequenced, revealing isolates of A. ovis, A. capra, A. marginale, and A. phagocytophilum. Of the 169 female R. turanicus ticks analyzed by PCR–RLB, 89.9% were harboring at least one TBP belonging to the genera Anaplasma, Ehrlichia, Babesia, Theileria, or Rickettsia. Overall, the data presented in this study revealed a high burden of ticks and TBPs in sheep, including zoonotic species, stressing the need for applying effective monitoring and control programs using a more holistic One Health approach.

The domestic goat ( Capra hircus ) plays a key role in global agriculture, being especially prized in regions of marginal pasture. However, the advent of industrialized breeding has seen a dramatic reduction in genetic diversity within commercial populations, while high extinction rates among feral herds have further depleted the reservoir of genetic variation available. Here, we present the first survey of whole mitochondrial genomic variation among the modern and historical goat populations of Britain and Ireland using a combination of mtDNA enrichment and high throughput sequencing. Fifteen historical taxidermy samples, representing the indigenous ‘Old Goat’ populations of the islands, were sequenced alongside five modern Irish dairy goats and four feral samples from endangered populations in western Ireland. Phylogenetic and network analyses of European mitochondrial variation revealed distinct groupings dominated by historical British and Irish samples, which demonstrate a degree of maternal genetic structure between the goats of insular and continental Europe. Several Irish modern feral samples also fall within these clusters, suggesting continuity between these dwindling populations and the ancestral ‘Old Goats’ of Ireland and Britain.

Theileria spp. are a group of parasites primarily transmitted by ticks and can pose a significant threat to domestic and wild animals globally. The main objective of this study was to understand the epidemiology of Theileria spp. in goats of Hainan Island/province, which is the only tropical region of China, and to study their hematological profiles in naturally infected goats. A total of 464 blood samples were collected from randomly selected local adult goats (Capra hircus, local domestic breed with black hair), from six cities and eight counties of Hainan, from November 2017 to October 2020. Blood smear microscopy of the sample and a nested polymerase chain reaction (nPCR) targeting the 18S rRNA gene combined with DNA sequencing were used to detect piroplasm infections in goats. Data analysis of the obtained sequences revealed that all the sequences were highly similar to the Theileria luwenshuni 18S rRNA gene sequence from the database. This result is consistent with the microscopic examination. In the hematological test, hematocrit, mean corpuscular volume, and mean corpuscular hemoglobin of the goats naturally infected with T. luwenshuni significantly increased, while mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration and red blood cell distribution width (RDW) were significantly decreased. Results showed that T. luwenshuni could cause macrocytic, hypochromic anemia in goats. This study provides reliable and comprehensive information about the epidemiology of the parasite infections and hematological profile of the infected goats in Hainan, which encourages further investigations to develop practical control strategies for Theileria spp. infections in tropical areas.
