An appreciation of the anatomic complexity of the root canal system is essential at every step of endodontic treatment. Endodontic treatment of teeth with unusual root canal anatomy presents a unique challenge. This clinical case report presents the application of cone beam computed tomography as a useful imaging technique in endodontics for the management of teeth with aberrant anatomy. Failure to detect an extra canal may lead to treatment failure. The current report presents the management of a previously endodontically treated maxillary first molar with missed additional mesiobuccal and distobuccal canals. ✓ Spinal meningiomas are reported infrequently as pure epidural tumors, and they are rarely located at the caudal end of the spine. The unique combination of a wholly epidural tumor confined entirely to the sacral canal has not been previously described. The authors describe the case of a 29-year-old man who presented with coccygeal and left-sided S2–4 dermatomal pain. Examination confirmed sensory loss in the same distribution. A magnetic resonance image revealed an enhancing mass lesion in the sacral canal scalloping the bone at S-2 and S-3. An apparent complete resection was performed. Intraoperatively the authors observed an entirely epidural tumor with a small dural attachment at the most caudal end of the thecal sac. Histological examination confirmed that the tumor was an atypical meningioma. A local recurrence developed within 1 year of surgery, and the patient underwent a hemisacrectomy for tumor removal. An additional recurrence in the lumbosacral spine and multiple pulmonary metastases developed thereafter. In addition to the unique nature of this case, the authors also observed a tumor behaving in a far more aggressive fashion than its histological findings would suggest. This adds to the differential diagnosis of tumors occurring in the sacral canal.

A 31-year-old woman presented with the very unusual symptom of being able to hear the movement of her eyeballs in her left ear: “I can hear my eyeballs move!” She initially described hearing a recurrent “swishing” sound that would occur intermittently. She eventually realized that its occurrence coincided with eyeball movement. In the eight months’ duration of her symptom, she had been unable to obtain a diagnosis from physicians whom she consulted and had even been referred for psychiatric evaluation and treatment. An otolaryngologist whom she consulted had a standard pure tone audiometric examination done, and this showed normal hearing acuity in both ears. A Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) of the inner ear and brain likewise showed no abnormalities. Due to the peculiarity of the patient’s complaint, the otolaryngologist consulted with a neurotologist who suspected the presence of a semicircular canal dehiscence. A computerized tomographic imaging study of the temporal bone confirmed the presence of a left superior semicircular canal dehiscence syndrome. (Figures 1 & 2) First described by Minor et al. in 1998, superior semicircular canal dehiscence syndrome is a neurotologic condition that characteristically presents as vertigo, oscillopsia, and/or disequilibrium induced by sound or changes in middle ear or intracranial pressure.1 Subsequent clinical studies described the presence of audiologic symptoms, the most prominent of which were conductive hearing loss and autophony with or without vestibular manifestations.2 Patients described an increased sensitivity to internally generated bone-conducted sounds, such as the heartbeat, chewing, footsteps hitting the ground and eye movements. It is of particular interest that the ability to hear one’s own eye movements, a condition known as eye movement autophony, currently appears to have been described as a symptom only in patients with semicircular canal dehiscence syndrome.3 Anecdotally, although the author of this report has diagnosed quite a number of patients with semicircular canal dehiscence syndrome manifesting primarily with vestibular symptoms, this particular case is the only one that presented with eye movement autophony as the primary and only symptom. Although the patient was not physically incapacitated by vertigo or chronic disequilibrium, she was significantly bothered by the unrelenting nature of her particular symptom. She subsequently underwent a transmastoid plugging of the superior semicircular canal which completely relieved her of the symptom.

A comprehensive knowledge of the root canal anatomy is essential for successful endodontic treatment. However, presence of anatomic variation in the tooth can be diagnostically and technically challenging and hence may pose difficulties during endodontic therapy. The anatomical variations associated with permanent mandibular canines have been reported by several investigators. Mandibular canines are recognized as usually having one root with one root canal in majority of cases. The occurrence of two root canals in single-rooted mandibular canine is considered unusual in Indian population. This case report describes non-surgical endodontic management of right permanent mandibular canine having one root with two canals and one apical foramen (Vertucci Type II).

AbstractObjective:We report what we believe to be a unique aetiology of the superior semicircular canal dehiscence syndrome, a recently described condition in which vestibular imbalance and/or hearing loss results from the loss of continuity of the bone overlying the superior semicircular canals.Case report:A 58-year-old woman presented with autophony in the right ear and momentary imbalance when shouting (Tullio phenomenon). Temporal bone computed tomography revealed a defect of the right superior semicircular canal caused by an enlarged superior petrosal sinus receiving drainage from a large cerebellar developmental venous anomaly. Conclusions:We review superior semicircular canal dehiscence syndrome and its management, and we discuss common aetiologies, contrasting these with the unusual aetiology presented here. We conclude that superior semicircular canal dehiscence syndrome may present with a solely developmental aetiology, despite presenting late in life.

Biometric-based authentication is gaining increasing attention for wearables and mobile applications. Meanwhile, the growing adoption of sensors in wearables also provides opportunities to capture novel wearable biometrics. In this work, we propose EarDynamic, an ear canal deformation based user authentication using in-ear wearables. EarDynamic provides continuous and passive user authentication and is transparent to users. It leverages ear canal deformation that combines the unique static geometry and dynamic motions of the ear canal when the user is speaking for authentication. It utilizes an acoustic sensing approach to capture the ear canal deformation with the built-in microphone and speaker of the in-ear wearable. Specifically, it first emits well-designed inaudible beep signals and records the reflected signals from the ear canal. It then analyzes the reflected signals and extracts fine-grained acoustic features that correspond to the ear canal deformation for user authentication. Our extensive experimental evaluation shows that EarDynamic can achieve a recall of 97.38% and an F1 score of 96.84%. Results also show that our system works well under different noisy environments with various daily activities.

When patients receive root canal therapy and have their canals left open for drainage, finding foreign items in the pulp chamber or root canal is not uncommon. Concluding the nature, location, and difficulty of retrieving the foreign body require a thorough patient history, clinical examination, and radiographic inspection. Children are more likely to experience this kind of incident since they frequently put strange things in their mouths. The foreign objects could potentially cause an infection, which could then result in a painful condition. This unique example of a metallic pin and several nail fragments extracted from a patient's root canal who had a nail-biting habit is reported.

1. In the cat, motoneurons supplying biventer cervicis, complexus and rectus capitis posterior receive disynaptic input from the posterior semicircular canals and from the contralateral anterior canal via the medial vestibulospinal tract (MVST). Disynaptic excitation from the ipsilateral anterior canal reaches these motoneurons via the lateral vestibulospinal tract. 2. We hypothesized that if the MVST has a unique role in the production of the vertical vestibulocollic reflex (VCR) in these muscles then interruption of this tract by transection of the medial longitudinal fasciculus (MLF) would change the VCR responses. Specifically, response vector orientations would shift toward the plane of the ipsilateral anterior canal, and response gains would drop at high frequencies. 3. We lesioned the MLF bilaterally and observed no substantial effect on neck-muscle responses. Response vector orientations did not shift systematically toward a single plane, nor was there a consistent decrease in response gains at high frequencies. 4. As in the horizontal VCR, there is no unique contribution from MVST neurons; parallel pathways must play an important role in the vertical VCR.

Background: The success of endodontic treatment depends on the complete debridement and disinfection of canal space. Various chemicals have been used for canal disinfection. However, to overcome the adverse effects, toxicity issues, and microbial resistance of most conventional canal disinfectants, alternative agents are needed. Many herbal products have been studied and recommended for canal disinfection. This article aimed to review the role of herbal extracts in canal disinfection as an irrigant, intracanal medicament, and their efficacy in smear layer removal. Results: Studies were identified through search of the following electronic databases: PubMed, Science direct, Scopus and Google Scholar. The search was undertaken with keywords herbal agents/ products for root canal disinfection, Enterococcus faecalis, endodontics, smear layer, biofilm, herbal extracts and antimicrobial activity. The literature was reviewed for past 30 years (1990- till June 2020). The results showed that several in-vitro studies reported effective antimicrobial action of herbal extracts for canal disinfection, however, very less in-vivo or clinical studies have been reported to ascertain the use of these agents for endodontic therapy. Conclusions: The study concludes that herbal agents can be effectively used for canal disinfection. However, long-term, invitro, clinical, biocompatibility studies clinical trials are further needed to confidently use these products in endodontics. Herbal extracts can be used as substitute to existing root canal disinfectants due to their unique properties. Therefore, improving the endodontic success rate by preventing root canal failures, persistent and reinfections.

Marginal zone lymphomas represent approximately 10–12% of all B-cell lymphomas. Extranodal marginal zone lymphomas (EMZL) or mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphomas are the most common subtype. Almost half of all MALT lymphomas arise in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract and, while the stomach is the most common site of GI involvement, the small and large intestines can also be involved. Rare cases of MALT lymphoma involving the rectum have been reported; however, to our knowledge, involvement of the anal canal has never been reported in the literature. Here, we describe a unique case of MALT lymphoma of the anal canal. Infectious agents have been implicated in the pathogenesis of MALT lymphomas, possibly through persistent antigenic stimulation of the area; however, in our case no such infection was documented.

Primary malignant lesions in the external auditory canal are rare. While squamous cell carcinoma is the most common of these lesions, there are also basal cell carcinoma, malignant melanoma and adenocarcinoma, etc. However, squamous cell carcinoma in situ of the external auditory canal is extremely rare since its first report in the English literature in 1953 and has not been reported in Korea. Its clinical manifestations are very similar to chronic ear disease. For treatment, local wide resection of the lesions is preferred. We recently encountered a 54-year-old female, who presented with intermittent irritating sensation in the external auditory canal. Otoscopic examination showed a scaly plaque with the irregular surface on the anteroinferior portion of the left external auditory canal. Excisional biopsy revealed a squamous cell carcinoma in situ. PurposeTo report percutaneous transcranial puncture, embolization and occlusion of a very symptomatic hypoglossal canal/anterior condylar vein dural arteriovenous fistula (DAVF) using syngo iGuide navigational software in a patient in whom transarterial and transvenous embolization and surgery had failed.MethodsAfter unsuccessful arterial and venous embolization and surgical treatment of a symptomatic hypoglossal canal DAVF, a 47-year-old man was transferred for further management. With exquisite anatomic detail provided by C-arm cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) equipment (Artis zee Biplane, Dyna CT VC21H, Siemens Healthcare GmbH, Germany) and syngo iGuide needle guidance navigational software (Siemens Healthcare GmbHy) for planning a safe direct approach, the hypoglossal/anterior condylar vein, the dominant outflow vein of the fistula, was needle punctured percutaneously at the hypoglossal foramen and occluded with ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer liquid embolic agent (Onyx, Medtronic, Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA) after placing two anchoring platinum coils (Target detachable coils, Stryker Neurovascular, Fremont, California, USA).ResultsAfter a year of progressively severe left eye proptosis, chemosis and increased intraocular pressure, the symptoms quickly subsided after this embolization and the patient was symptom free at his 3-month and later checkups.ConclusionWith guidance and imaging provided by CBCT and syngo iGuide navigational software, an otherwise untreatable DAVF was successfully embolized and obliterated by an aggressive unique percutaneous trans-cranial needle puncture of the dominant outflow vein in the hypoglossal canal.

Every tooth in the dentition can show very unique root anatomy along with variation in the number of canals in each root. The failure rate of nonsurgical root canal treatment is higher in the mandibular premolars due to difficulties in finding accessory canals explained in numerous studies. Clinicians should be aware and keep abreast with the complete assessment of the anatomy and morphology of the root canal system for a favorable treatment outcome. This case report illustrates root canal treatment for a rare case of a C-shaped with four root canals in the mandibular second premolar identified under a microscope and cone-beam computer tomography (CBCT) scan. This incidence has never been reported in the literature so far.

The aim of the present study was to compare mandibular neurovascular canal anatomy in human and great apes by using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). The anatomical variability of mandibular neurovascular canals (mandibular, incisive and lingual canals) of 129 modern humans and great apes (Homo, Pan and Gorilla) were analyzed by linear measurements on CBCT images. The Kruskal-Wallis non-parametric test and Dunn’s all pairs for joint ranks were applied to compare the variability of mandibular canals among these groups. Human, Chimpanzee and Gorilla groups showed significant differences in the dimensions of the mandibular canal, mental foramen, incisive canal, lingual canal and anterior mandibular bone width. Bifid mandibular canals and anterior loops were the anatomical variations most frequently observed in the Gorilla. Humans had a larger mental foramen and a distinctive incisive canal. The latter could not be identified in the Gorilla group. The variability in the anatomy within mandibles of human and non-human primates, shows different forms in the neurovascular structures. In comparison to the mandible of great apes, the incisive canal is suggested to be a feature unique to the human mandible.

The cleaning of the ear canal is very important, and it is crucial that it is performed by an otolaryngologist as it requires a high level of competence and skill. The accumulation of cerumen or earwax in the ear canal is one of the most commonly observed problems in patients, and ignoring it may cause hearing loss, irritation and discomfort. There are a number of techniques that have been utilized in the past for cleaning the ear canal, including irrigation, i.e., curettage and water pick, and syringing. There are many patients who are unable to clean their ear canal through a natural self-cleaning process. The main aim of this study is to develop a unique model for ear cleaning free of irritation or discomfort, especially for those patients who have disorders of the self-cleaning ear canal process. The tool is designed specifically considering patient safety and comfort. However, the commercialization of this tool requires research and modification for improved quality results considering primarily the patient’s health.

In the female, the canal of Nuck is a tubular fold of parietal peritoneum that travels along with the round ligament through the inguinal canal to its attachment on the labia majora. The canal of Nuck is analogous to the processus vaginalis in the male. In embryonic development, this pathway typically obliterates early in life; however, in some cases, it may partially or completely fail to close. This failure to obliterate can lead to complications ranging from a cyst of the canal of Nuck (also known as a female hydrocele) to herniation and incarceration of abdominal and pelvic organs. There is little information available in the medical literature concerning this rare condition; therefore, it is important for sonographers, physicians, and surgeons to be familiar with this developmental abnormality. This report represents the first prenatal case of a cyst of the canal of Nuck, along with the unique combination of a large left fetal ovarian cyst and acute polyhydramnios. The embryology, incidence, differential diagnosis, management, and treatment of these female conditions are discussed.

The teat canal is an invagination of the outer teat surface. Its epithelial constitution is, however, highly specialized as indicated by its high turnover rate, its unique function in trapping bacteria, and in sealing the teat canal between milkings. The keratin of the teat canal is in a dynamic state of generation and degradation. Repeated removal during milking of keratin contaminated with or colonized by bacteria plays a significant role in preventing mastitis (Murphy, 1959; Capuco et al. 1992). To study the biology of the keratin lining, e.g., its turnover, and its relation to mastitis defence, reliable methods of collecting keratin in vivo for quantitative and qualitative analysis are necessary. Bright et al. (1990) compared methods for keratin collection in vivo and suggested that a tapestry needle was a suitable tool for collecting repeatable, representative samples of keratin for lipid analysis from single teat canals of living cows.

Endodontic therapy is based on cleaning and shaping the canal system till the apex with total obturation of the canal. However, it is not always straightforward. Endodontics specialists face many complicated cases as sever curved canals, calcified canals and canals with previously initiated therapy which require to deal with. dental professionals pay attention to create new methods or to improve the already developed equipment and procedures to facilitate their work. Rotary endodontics files are in the center of attention. nowadays, recent files with extraordinary properties have been revolutionized. The standard Nickel Titanium rotary endodontic files are not always preferred. It cannot serve well in the aforementioned complex cases due to its larger tapers and unique shape memory property. Moreover, these files have led to several dentinal microcracks formation during canal preparation using the flaring instruments. Microcracks are evaluated through the accurately presented sliced images using Micro-Computer Tomography (micro-CT) done before and after root canal preparation. This has led to the invention of new generations of rotary endodontics files, with unique properties improving its behavior during the instrumentation, including Controlled Memory (CM) files and Electrical discharge Machine (EDM) files, opening the door for a new era in the field of endodontics dentistry. The present study aims to review HyFlex EDM files, including their properties, clinical dental usage, and the role of micro-CT in analyzing dentinal micro cracks formed with HyFlex EDM files.

Retiform hemangioendothelioma is a rare intermediate or borderline neoplasm of the blood vessels that mostly occurs in extremities. Here we report a unique case of retiform hemangioendothelioma presented in the external auditory canal. 58-year-old male patient presented with the complaint of right ear swelling for 4 years. On examination, a spherical swelling in the right ear was found occluding the view of external auditory canal. The tumor was removed surgically. Intraoperatively, the mass was found attached to the outer part of the right external auditory canal near the root of helix. Histopathology of the resected tumor showed typical features of retiform hemangioendothelioma. In addition, immunohistochemical analysis revealed that tumor was positive for endothelial cell marker CD34 and occasionally positive for cell proliferative marker Ki-67.

Researchers have argued that the process of human birth is unique among primates and mammals in that the infant emerges with its face oriented in the opposite direction from its mother (occiput anterior) and head rotation occurs in the birth canal. However, this notion of human uniqueness has not been substantiated, because there are few comparative studies of birth in non-human primates. This paper reports the mechanism of birth in chimpanzees ( Pan troglodytes ) based on the first clear, close-up video recordings of three chimpanzee births in captivity. In all three cases, the foetus emerged with an occiput anterior orientation, and the head and body rotated after the head had emerged. Therefore, these characteristics are not uniquely human. Furthermore, in two of the three cases, the chimpanzee newborns landed on the ground without being guided from the birth canal by the mother. The fact that the human newborn emerges with an occiput anterior orientation has thus far been taken as evidence for the necessity of midwifery in modern humans, but this view also needs revision. Our observations raise the need to reconsider the evolutionary scenario of human birth.

Background: Collapsed ear canals typically occur when an outside force, such as a headset for audiometric testing, is present. However, when a collapsed ear canal occurs without external pressure, this creates a challenge not only for performing audiometric testing but also for coupling a hearing aid to the ear canal. Purpose: This case report highlights the challenges associated with fitting a hearing aid on a patient with a severe anterior-posterior collapsed ear canal with a mixed hearing loss. Research Design: A 67-yr-old female originally presented to Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine in 1996 with a long-standing history of bilateral otosclerosis. She had chronic ear infections in the right ear and a severely collapsed ear canal in the left ear and was fit with a bone anchored hearing aid (BAHA®) on the right side in 2003. However, benefit from the BAHA started to decrease due to changes in hearing, and a different hearing solution was needed. It was proposed that a hearing aid be fit to her collapsed left ear canal; however, trying to couple a hearing aid to the collapsed ear canal required unique noncustom earmold solutions. Conclusions: This case study highlights some of the obstacles and potential solutions for coupling a hearing aid to a severely collapsed ear canal.

Recent improvements and the widening of the I-84 Bridge crossing of the New York Canal in Boise, Idaho, have increased the number of bridge columns from 28 to 60. The resulting structure has two parallel rows of columns that extend across the width of the bridge longitudinally within the canal. After the widening of the bridge and addition of the bridge columns, the canal began experiencing an oscillating wave phenomenon that originated from the bridge columns and caused erosion of upstream and downstream canal banks and bridge abutments. A physical model study was conducted to investigate the wave phenomenon and determine what modifications to the columns or canal would be necessary to prevent the wave oscillations. The physical model was successful in simulating the wave phenomenon, and four different modifications for resolving the wave problem were tested in the model. A unique solution was found that used precast nose cones attached to selected columns. The nose cones have been installed in the prototype bridge crossing, and no wave oscillations have occurred since installation. This paper discusses the study to simulate the wave phenomenon and the four modifications that were evaluated to reduce or prevent wave oscillations.

Abstract Although social capital is considered to be a key instrument for common pool resource (CPR) management, its effect among heterogenous players such as upstream and downstream farmers along an irrigation canal is not clear. Using a combination of lab-in-the-field experiments to measure social capital and household survey data in a unique natural experimental setting, this study shows that upstream farmers with higher trust toward the downstream farmers are more likely to be satisfied with their water usage. This finding is consistent with the hypothesis that upstream farmers with higher trust demand less water and leave more water in a canal because they expect reciprocal behaviour from downstream farmers. Since the incentive structures of irrigation management closely resemble those of the standard experiments to measure social capital, this finding also provides a unique case study of the real-world relevance of these experiments.

The Panama Canal (PC) has recently been in the world spotlight. In August 2014, it celebrated 100 years of uninterrupted service and, in June 2016, the expansion project for the canal was inaugurated. The final project involved building a third set of locks. Once the canal started to operate, it could be seen that the way in which vessels transited the canal remained the same. However, the dimensions of locks and their revised operating procedures have had an effect on vessel size and the manoeuvres for the larger vessels. After the first transit on 26 June 2016, it was possible to have access to data on the new lockage systems for Neopanamax ships. The thorough statistical study of these new datasets (composed of Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), multivariate regression and statistical quality control techniques) has shown the main drivers of transit time across the Cocolí and Agua Clara locks. It has also made it possible to test the learning curve of Panama Canal pilots in the newly expanded canal. The effects of pilot training on the time it takes to transit through the locks, direction of entry in each lock, the type of vessel, vessel dimensions and the use of different types of manoeuvres have been analysed. The results are used to characterise and help optimise the performance of this new and unique lock system.

Lesions tend to be advanced at presentation, as massive bony erosion can remain asymptomatic. When symptoms occur, they reflect involvement of the neurovascular contents of the temporal bone. The earliest clinical features, such as headache, facial numbness and middle-ear effusion, do not immediately suggest the site or gravity of the underlying pathology. Anterior extension of disease may produce ophthalmoplegia and diplopia whilst posterior spread involves the lower cranial nerves, within the internal auditory canal, jugular foramen and hypoglossal canal.

The efficient elimination of microorganisms and their byproducts from infected root canals is compromised by the limitations in conventional root canal disinfection strategies and antimicrobials. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are advantageous for root canal disinfection, mainly due to their wide-spectrum anti-microbial activity. Compared to other commonly used nanoparticulate antibacterials, AgNPs have acceptable antibacterial properties and relatively low cytotoxicity. Owing to their nano-scale, AgNPs penetrate deeper into the complexities of the root canal systems and dentinal tubules, as well as enhancing the antibacterial properties of endodontic irrigants and sealers. AgNPs gradually increase the dentin hardness in endodontically treated teeth and promote antibacterial properties when used as a carrier for intracanal medication. The unique properties of AgNPs make them an ideal additive for different endodontic biomaterials. However, the possible side effects of AgNPs, such as cytotoxicity and tooth discoloration potential, merits further research.

Introduction: Ethylene Diamine Tetra Acetic Acid (EDTA) 18% irrigation solution is one of the chelating agents that able to remove calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) from the root canal wall. Failure of root canal treatment can be caused by the presence of residual calcium hydroxide in the root canal wall, thus blocking the bond between the medication and root canal filling material with the root canal wall. This study was aimed to observe the EDTA 18% flow in removing the Ca(OH)2 using CFD analysis. Methods: This research was descriptive. Cleanliness of the root canal wall from Ca(OH)2 medicament using EDTA 18% irrigation was analysed using the CFD method with test specimens in the form of resin blocks made according to the characteristics of the root canal. The irrigation needle used was side-vented with a position of 3 mm from the apical tooth. Stage analysis of root canal geometry was performed using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis to observe the characteristics of irrigation solutions in root canals in 3D. Results: The streamlined characteristics of EDTA 18% irrigation solution showed a unique behaviour due to the features of the side-vent shaped irrigation needle. Irrigation flow in the crown area of the inlet (side-vented irrigation needle) showed low velocity so that the fluid flow when exiting the inlet was more towards the apical than the outlet (root canal orifice). Conclusion: Velocity and wall shear stress of EDTA 18% showed the results validation conformity between experimental and CFD, that the maximum velocity of EDTA 18% is 19 ms-1 and EDTA 18% wall shear stress is 1.56 KPa for calcium hydroxide removal observed from the CFD study. Keywords: Computational fluid dynamics, EDTA 18%, calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2), velocity, wall shear stress

Anoli s lizards are a model system for the study of adaptive radiation and convergent evolution. Greater Antillean anoles have repeatedly evolved six similar forms or ecomorphs: crown-giant, grass-bush, twig, trunk, trunk-crown and trunk-ground. Members of each ecomorph category possess a specific set of morphological, ecological and behavioural characteristics which have been acquired convergently. Here we test whether the semicircular canal system—the organ of balance during movement—is also convergent among ecomorphs, reflecting the shared sensory requirements of their ecological niches. As semicircular canal shape has been shown to reflect different locomotor strategies, we hypothesized that each Anolis ecomorph would have a unique canal morphology. Using three-dimensional semilandmarks and geometric morphometrics, semicircular canal shape was characterized in 41 Anolis species from the Greater Antilles and the relationship between canal shape and ecomorph grouping, phylogenetic history, size, head dimensions, and perch characteristics was assessed. Further, canal morphology of modern species was used to predict the ecomorph affinity of five fossil anoles from the Miocene of the Dominican Republic. Of the covariates tested, our study recovered ecomorph as the single-most important covariate of canal morphology in modern taxa; although phylogenetic history, size, and head dimensions also showed a small, yet significant correlation with shape. Surprisingly, perch characteristics were not found to be significant covariates of canal shape, even though they are important habitat variables. Using posterior probabilities, we found that the fossil anoles have different semicircular canals shapes to modern ecomorph groupings implying extinct anoles may have been interacting with their Miocene environment in different ways to modern Anolis species.

In 1988 the Law for Private Television Broadcasting was approved by Spanish parliament. Three licenses were initially awarded. Soon thereafter, in 1990, three channels started broadcasting: Antena 3, Berlusconi-related Tele 5 and, against all odds, a pay channel, Canal + Spain. This article focuses on sports programming in the beginning of Canal + Spain. First, it offers an account of the Spanish television landscape in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Then, it scrutinizes the arrival of private television within the Spanish mediascape, examining thus the launching of Canal + by paying attention to the specificity of the Spanish audiovisual market. At the same time, it explores the transnational circulation of formats and professionals across Europe, especially in connection with the French Canal +, since it was a central element of the Spanish channel’s implementation. Second, it analyzes the types of live sports broadcasts as well as other sports programming such as talk shows in Canal + during the early 1990s in order to account for their importance in creating a unique kind of product designed to appeal to potential subscribers. More specifically, we will argue that live football broadcasts did not only attempt to establish a clear demarcation with the old-fashioned image and soundscapes of traditional television but also aimed at culturally appealing to a urbanite, cultivated spectator, precisely the type of viewer Canal + tried to recruit in its early days. Therefore, we will discuss how technological excellence and spectacle became tools for the expression of specific cultural values.
