Resumo:
In a polyuric patient, first exclude osmotic diuresis, then differentiate between primary polydipsia, central, and nephrogenic diabetes insipidus, with clinical characteristics, simple blood and urine tests, and hypothalamic magnetic resonance imaging. Mammals are osmoregulators and osmolality is perceived by central and peripheral osmotic receptors and influencing thirst perception and vasopressin secretion. In congenital polyuric states it is useful to distinguish ‘pure’ polyuric states, that is, loss of water only but normal conservation of sodium, potassium, chloride, and calcium, from complex (water + sodium + calcium) polyuric states. For the latter, the triad polyuria/polyhydramnios/prematurity is a tell-tale sign of Bartter syndrome. We recommend sequencing of the nephrogenic diabetes insipidus and Bartter genes in all the affected congenital and hereditary polyuric patients. Acquired central and nephrogenic polyuric states are simpler to evaluate.

The chapter begins with a general description of the clinical findings in conditions where hyperexcitability occurs. These are divided into the dystrophic conditions, such as myotonia dystrophy, and the non-dystrophic conditions, which include myotonia congenita, paramyotonia congenita, and potassium-aggravated myotonia. Conditions where hypoexcitability occurs such as periodic paralysis are next discussed. The associated disorders of sodium, calcium, chloride, and potassium channels are described. Next, the protocols for the neurophysiological tests that are used in myotonia, and the short exercise test either at room temperature or after cooling are introduced. The different patterns seen in these tests are outlined and the algorithms allowing precise targeting of genetic testing explained. The inter-discharge interval calculation that can be used in delineating the causes of myotonia is discussed. Other conditions where prominent spontaneous activity occurs such as Schwartz–Jampel syndrome and Pompe’s disease are described. The chapter concludes with details of the long exercise test used in diagnosis of periodic paralysis.

Resumo:
Data on geology of the Oleninskoe deposit, and results of mineralogical and geochemical investigations of ores and altered rocks are presented. Mineralization is connected with granite porphyry sills, an end member of gabbrodiorite-diorite-granodiorite complex of minor intrusions. The main alteration processes are diopsidization and biotitization, formation of quartz-muscovite-albite, quartz-aresenopyrite-tourmaline, and quartz metasomatic rocks. More than 50 ore minerals (sulfides, sulfosalts, tellurides, and native metals) were identified in the ore, including 20 minerals of silver and gold. Mineral associations in the ore and sequence of mineral formation are defined. Five generations of gold-silver alloys are identified, its composition covers spectrum from native silver to high-grade gold. Mineralized fluids in the deposit are of high salinity (sodium and calcium chlorides), and rich in As, Sb, Pb, Cu, Zn, and Ag. The Oleninskoe deposit is classified as an epithermal metamorphosed gold deposit. The book is of interest for specialists in economic geology, mineralogy and geochemistry of ore deposits.

Resumo:
This multi-disciplinary study examines the exceptional Turkey red textile dyeing process and product. Prized for its brilliant colour and durability, yet notoriously difficult to produce, the textile was consumed locally and exported around the world. Considered one of the first instances of industrial espionage, the expansion of the Turkey red industry is closely linked to the Industrial Revolution and the emergence of a new global economy. Significant technological advances in chemistry and dyeing were motivated by the demands of Turkey red dyers and printers, who were located primarily in the west of Scotland, the north of England, and around Mulhouse, Switzerland. This book explores the arc of the Turkey red industry, the evolution of the process through key producers and technical developments, the complicated printing process, and finishes with an examination of significant Turkey red collections and a selection of object case studies. The chemistry of the process is described in an accessible, contextual manner, highlighting the significance of the distinctive technique that yielded the best red attainable on cotton. Drawing on both historical and contemporary study, Turkey Red presents significant new research on the material characterisation of this fascinating, eye-catching textile, and offers an in-depth historical example of the global effect of textile consumption. This book is the most comprehensive examination of Turkey red textiles and dyeing to date. The bright red cotton, renowned for its brilliant hue and resistance to fading, was a household name during the nineteenth century and a major industrial product. Following an extensive analysis of historical dyeing methods and texts on the topic, Wertz proposes a process-based definition of Turkey red as cotton fibers pre-treated with oil, then aluminium, and dyed with madder or synthetic alizarin and calcium. A discussion of textile dyeing processes fitting this definition, along with trade accounts and other documentary evidence, reveals the possible origins of Turkey red in India. The dyeing process is presented along with a discussion of the chemical interactions taking place, and how this contributes to the particular fastness of the final product. Its resistance to bleaching and wash fading made it especially useful for domestic textiles and high-use garments. These properties, and the dyeing process itself, meant that printed Turkey red could only be obtained through discharging fully-dyed cloth of the red before selectively adding other colors. Turkey red both drove and benefited from technological innovations like chlorine bleaching, the synthesis of alizarin, and the development of Turkey red oil, as well as the mechanization and increased production capacity of the Industrial Revolution. Archival material provides insight into the nineteenth-century industry and how international markets made it a global product. A survey of Turkey red collection objects, paintings, photographs, and other materials showcases its appeal, versatility, and durability as a textile.
