Bennett, Jonathan William Peter. "The regulation of tourism business activity in the transitional Vietnamese economy". Thesis, University of Hull, 2005. http://hydra.hull.ac.uk/resources/hull:5636.

Resumo:
This thesis examines the extent to which regulation theory provides an appropriate theoretical framework for analysing the development of capitalist economic relations and activities in transitional economies. The investigation uses secondary sources and information gained from interviews conducted with tourism business owners and managers in three Vietnamese cities: Hanoi, Hue and Ho Chi Minh City. I find that through its recognition of firstly, the path dependent nature of regulatory processes and secondly, national and local scales as key sites in the regulation of global economic processes, regulation theory can be utilised in analysing the development of capitalist economic relations and activities in transitional economies. Nevertheless, the findings in this thesis also challenge and offer new perspectives on a number of the key concepts contained within regulation theory. Firstly, my findings illustrate how political imperatives play a much more significant role in the regulation of economic activity than acknowledged in regulation theory. In Vietnam, as a way of maintaining the state as the leading institution in the Vietnamese socioeconomy, the central Vietnamese state has historically ceded a significant degree of regulatory control over economic space to the local state. As a consequence, the local state has traditionally constituted the key institution regulating economic activity in local space. In the transitional Vietnamese economy, I illustrate that political imperatives are continuing to inform the practices of the central state in regulating nascent capitalist economic processes. I find that this is chiefly being articulated through the informal regulatory practices and capacity of the central state as it seeks to mediate capitalist economic relations between supra and sub-national actors and institutions. This runs counter to assertions within regulation theory where the regulatory power of the central state is chiefly derived from its capacity to enact a formal framework of regulatory forms to guide global economic processes throughout national space. Secondly, I highlight the importance of the social regulation of economic activity and how in Vietnam the cultivation of social ties with local state officials has historically constituted an important institutional mechanism regulating economic activity in local spaces. In the transitional Vietnamese economy, I find that among private tourism business owners interviewed in Hanoi, Hue and Ho Chi Minh City, the cultivation of social ties with local state officials has continued to play an important role in the establishment and running of their businesses. Out of these findings, I adapt the conceptual framework provided in regulation theory and build a more appropriate analytical framework that can be utilised in examining how regulatory processes and relations are evolving in regulating capitalist economic activity in transitional economies.

The ongoing transformation of centrally planned societies into market economies poses many difficult questions regarding large scale institutional reform. How far to go, how fast, and in which order? Until now, the debate has been mainly theoretical. As the reforms progress, however, we need to compare the theoretical predictions with the empirical evidence. Financial intermediation is one sector in which the gap between socialism and capitalism is particular large, and the development of commercial banking has often proved to be a bottleneck in the reform process. Empirical examination of financial reform is therefore urgent. This dissertation explores the development of the Vietnamese state banks during the early 1990s. It highlights the lengthy process of altering the formal model and informal rules governing the bank organizations. The official socialist ideology is the source of many problems. First, it means that state ownership remains, enabling the government to intervene easily in the banks’ operations. The ideology’s informal role is arguably even more important, because it leaves unclear how bankers should act when profit maximization conflicts with social responsibility. Uncertainty will prevail as long as bankers and banking authorities have only partially converted to a new set of norms. Accordingly, the formal financial sector will fail to florish.

Le, Tien Tung. "English proficiency of Vietnamese business graduates: Requirements of government, private universities, and foreign employers". Thesis, Edith Cowan University, Research Online, Perth, Western Australia, 2020. https://ro.ecu.edu.au/theses/2308.

English is the global language of business, trade, tourism, technology, science and politics. It is also the official language in many foreign companies (Kam, 2002) and proficiency in English is therefore an advantage for acquiring employment in foreign companies where the working environment is multilingual, professional and highly competitive. As a dynamic developing country in Southeast Asia, Vietnam has attracted substantial foreign investment since the introduction of Doi Moi or the Renovation policy in 1986. Over the last three decades, a number of foreign companies have established themselves in the country, creating numerous employment opportunities for young Vietnamese people, especially university graduates. These foreign companies originate from a range of countries and English has become the common language for employees who are required to have good communication skills within these workplaces (Roshid & Chowdhury, 2013). While previous studies have investigated employers’ perceptions of graduates’ English proficiency in the fields of manufacturing and engineering in Malaysia and India as well as the employment competencies that business graduates require in Vietnam, little research has investigated the influence of English proficiency on the employability of business graduates from private universities in Vietnam. The aim of this study, therefore, was to explore the influence of English proficiency on the employability of business graduates from private universities in Vietnam who seek employment in foreign companies. To best understand the nature of this phenomenon, qualitative methods were employed to collect data via interviews, focus group discussions and document analysis. Participants included policy makers, private university business undergraduates, business graduates who had sought employment in foreign companies, as well as managers and human resources staff in these companies. This study found that English proficiency strongly influences the success of business students who graduate from private universities in Vietnam and seek employment in foreign companies. Inconsistent internal triadic relationships between the university course materials, pedagogy and assessment procedures was also found to be an important influence on student success. Finally, the research highlights the external misalignment between student outcomes of English courses at private universities and the requirements of the foreign employers are. Based on the main findings, a number of recommendations have been suggested in relation to policies, universities, language teachers, and future research. The findings from this study will contribute to understanding the role of English proficiency and its influence on the employability of business graduates from private universities in Vietnam. This information could be used to assist lecturers and other university stakeholders to assess whether English programs in private universities meet the needs of foreign employers and amend them where necessary. Understanding the level of English proficiency required by foreign employers and the methods used to assess graduates’ English proficiency will support private universities and their undergraduate business students to better prepare for future employability in foreign companies. This knowledge will also be valuable for all universities in Vietnam and other Asian countries with a similar culture and English education characteristics. In addition, the findings may inform policies on teaching and learning foreign languages in the Vietnamese national education system.

Aim:

The purpose of this study is to explore the Vietnamese market for Electronic Road Tolls. Company X is a world wide supplier of electronic toll systems. They are focusing on systems that will reduce traffic congestion in cities or congestion created by road charge toll systems. Company X has been active in the South East Asia for over 10 years. Now they want to explore new markets in this region. The company is interested in developing countries where road infrastructure is expanding. Since Vietnam is one of the fastest growing economies in Asia Company X is interested in if it is a market they should enter.

Research questions:

Should Company X enter the Vietnamese market?

If yes, which entry strategy should be used entering this market?

Method:

To analyze Company X’s internal and external environment I have used different theoretical methods, PEST analysis, Micro / Macro environmental analysis and with the SWOT framework I have summarized recommendations based on the facts I have gathered. I have also investigated different entry strategies to see what is most suitable for a Company X. I have collected data via interviews, literature and internet sources.

Result & Conclusions:

Short term Company X has the opportunity to come in with their products into Vietnam with a co-operation with Competitor A. They will set up a test system at one toll plaza between the airport and Hanoi with two lane dedicated for EFC and Company X is their first choice if they are competitive. This will give them the opportunity to be first on this market to implement microwave equipment in Vietnam and an opportunity to set the standard in the country for the future.

Suggestions for future research:

The empirical data in this thesis is mainly gathered from secondary sources. The information would have been more accurate with more primary data.

Contribution of the thesis:

This thesis shows that large investments in road infrastructure are coming up in Vietnam. This thesis also shows that currently there is low activity from competitors using the same technology and this was not previously known by Company X.

Background  Along with an impressive increase of individual incomes and expansion of middle class populations (Lee & Nguyen, 2017), Vietnam is an attractive market where the fashion category receives the high interest among young consumers. Noticeably, while Western fast fashion is considered as a cheap product in most developed countries, it is kind of an expensive item in the Vietnam context. Although previous studies show that Vietnamese millennials are fond of the products from the West, Vietnam is a challenging market that requires Western fast fashion brands to have an insight into local consumer preferences since the local consumer’ values, attitudes, and behaviors are changing dramatically. Purpose  The purpose of this study is to explore attitudes of Vietnamese millennials towards Western fast fashion brands related to country of origin (COO) as well as the symbolic values of these brands in the mind of Vietnamese millennials. It thereby helps the Western companies to understand the Vietnamese market in terms of fast fashion, discovering potential investment opportunities and propose suitable marketing strategies to enter this market.  Method  Following the purpose of this study, an exploratory qualitative research with an abductive approach was utilised. Specifically, in-depth interviews with open-ended questions were employed to have an insight into the participants’ attitude towards Western fast fashion brands. Additionally, after the interviews, the participant's opinions were captured for a visualization of attributes of Western fast fashion brands. Conclusion The research results show that Vietnamese millennials generally have positive attitudes towards Western fast fashion brands related to COO. Nevertheless, in this particular study, the emerging symbolic values include sense of beauty,  educational background, social status as well as self-identity. The study also points out its delimitations and limitations, offers various possibilities for managerial implications, as well as provides some suggestions for future research.

Key words:         Customer value, value-adding factors, e-commerce, apparel industry, Vietnamese market, customers’ perception.  Background:      Along with the development of many applications from Internet, Electronic Commerce (e-commerce) has changed the business scene in the global economy by emerging as a new, efficient channel of doing business. The apparel industry has also been approaching this way of doing business as an attempt to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of operations at various extents. In the Vietnamese market, Ninomaxx being well-known as leading fashion brand for young and proactive people is in the process of launching its very first online shop. However, the lack of information and the vagueness in regard to customers preference and shopping habit in the context of e-commerce leads to many difficulties for fashion companies like Ninomaxx. These lacking can all be traced back to one universal cause that is the insufficiency in understanding customers’ perceived value. Accordingly, it raises the authors’ interests to conduct a research of customers’ perception concerning customer value in Vietnamese apparel industry within the e-commerce context. Purpose:             The purpose of this thesis is to identify elements of e-commerce that customers perceive as value-adding factors in the context of Vietnamese apparel industry. Accordingly, thesis will examine how value can be created and enhanced for customers in the case of Ninomaxx and Vietnamese apparel firms in general. Method:              In this thesis, authors chose to collect and analyze data mainly through a quantitative approach. Prospective customers of Ninomaxx, whose ages were from 17 to 30, were the surveyed group. A questionnaire was employed to collect response from the group and was distributed in two ways: an online link and offline papers. Various nonparametric statistical techniques and one extensive model were used to analyze results of the survey. Conclusion:    From the perception of Vietnamese customers from 17 to 30 years old, there are 5 elements of e-commerce that are identified as very strong value-adding factors, namely, availability of information on the website, accuracy of demonstrating products’ color on website, seller’s ensuring products’ quality, seller’s trustworthiness and safety of using products. There are additionally 11 strong value-adding factors from perception of apparel customers in Vietnam. However, there is evidence of differences in customers’ response regarding their demographic characteristics and Internet usage. Apparel companies should consider accordingly in order to form the optimal strategy for e-commerce retail channel in Vietnam.

This thesis investigates the links between core entrepreneurial competencies, relationship quality and business success among small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the logistics sector in Vietnam. A simultaneous mixed‐method approach was adopted. The qualitative study involved individual in‐depth semi‐structured interviews with 39 Vietnamese logistics entrepreneurs. The objective was to identify specific behaviours that delineate core entrepreneurial competencies and relationship quality practices that were regarded important by the interviewees. Eleven entrepreneurial competency domains and five relationship quality practices domains were identified by thematic analysis of the qualitative data that were consistent with existing models. The competency domains were strategic, commitment, conceptual, opportunity, organising and leading, learning, personal, technical, ethical, social responsibility and familism. The relationship quality domains were relationship building, trust, use of formal institutions, use of social networks and establish personal rapport. Besides these, new behaviours and practices were also identified and added to the existing domains. These newly identified behaviours suggest that existing competency and relationship quality models can be improved to better reflect core entrepreneurial competencies and relationship quality measures in different contexts. The quantitative study involved a survey among 316 entrepreneurs who completed a fivepart structured questionnaire using Likert scale measurements. This study tested the causal pathway between entrepreneurial competencies and business success and the mediation effect of relationship quality using a partial least square structural equation modelling procedure. The results showed that ethical and social responsibility competencies were strong predictors of business success for Vietnamese logistics entrepreneurs. However, the direct relationship between entrepreneurial competencies and functional competencies to business success were not significant. Rather, the results found that relationship quality successfully mediated the relationship between all three groups: entrepreneurial competencies, functional competencies, and ethical and social responsibility competencies with business success of logistics SMEs in Vietnam. Overall, the study contributes to the existing body of knowledge by revealing a more nuanced picture of relationships that exist between core entrepreneurial competencies, relationship quality and business success factors. It also offers implications for entrepreneurs, policymakers and educators in terms of efforts to help SMEs.

In a competitive business environment, managers’ need for broad scope management accounting system (MAS) information for decision making increases. This information is critical for facilitating managers to gain a better understanding of a competitive environment and to respond to uncertain situations. Such understanding, in turn, helps managers to make more effective decisions, thereby improving their performance. The extant literature suggests that several factors, such as organisational structure and external environment, may have an impact on managers’ use of broad scope MAS information (hereafter, the MAS information) and on their performance. However, the literature suggests that such an impact varies depending on contexts such as countries and cultures. In a transitional economy, as in Vietnam, studies investigating the impact of these factors on managers’ use of the MAS information and on their performance are rather scarce. Vietnam is in the process of transforming from a centrally planned economy to a market-oriented one characterised by a competitive business environment, organisations with multiple ownership types and a mix of leadership styles and reward systems. The relevant literature argues that the impact of different ownership types, leadership styles and reward systems in the transitional economy of Vietnam may differ from that found in a western country’s developed economy. However, an extensive literature review suggests that research on the impact of leadership style, reward system, and ownership type on managers’ use of the MAS information and their performance in Vietnam has yet to be conducted. The current study addresses this shortcoming.

The purpose of this thesis is to gain a deeper insight of in which ways Swedish SMEs are dependent on their network when entering into Vietnam. In the introductory chapter there is a description of why it is interesting with the phenomenon globalization and of why Vietnam is an interesting market. This is followed by a discussion of the importance of network. The research question that evolved from this is: In what ways are Swedish SMEs dependent on their business network relationships when entering Vietnam? In the literature review the revised Uppsala model helps to gain a great knowledge of the importance of network when internationalizing. Furthermore, the core concept network is discussed from different angles. From this discussion we identified the following core concepts: embeddedness, complexity of relationships, network position, structure and bonds and trust and commitment, which the conceptual framework is based on. In the methodology chapter the approach, method and design that are used in this thesis are explained, together with the operationalization and an introduction of the respondents and the companies that they represent. In the empirical findings, the information gathered from different interviews is presented. The chapter about the empirical findings is structured based on the concept from the literature review, but also from the respondents, in order for the reader to easy be able to follow. This is followed by the analysis in which the respondents’ answers are compared to each other and then towards the conceptual framework. Lastly, the conclusion with the answer of the research question, implications and recommendations and suggestions for future research is stated. The main conclusions from this study are: • Swedish SMEs are dependent on their network when entering Vietnam. • Swedish SMEs are dependent on being locally anchored since it facilitates the interaction with the market. • Swedish SMEs are dependent on their network concerning travelling, communicating and interacting. • Swedish SMEs are dependent on their local personnel when conducting business in Vietnam. • Swedish SMEs are not dependent concerning obtaining institutional and political relationships when entering Vietnam.

Small businesses represent by far the largest proportion of business entities within Australian business, and as such represent a vital component of the country’s economic structure (ABS, 2016). There has been a significant increase in the Australian population due to immigration from a range of countries. In fact, Australia is now very diverse, with migrants arriving from more than 200 countries across the world. There are approximately 5.3% of all small businesses that are run by Vietnamese entrepreneurs in Australia (ABS, 2016). It is clear from this figure that Vietnamese small businesses make up a significant proportion of this sector in Australia. This thesis examines the dynamics of Vietnamese migrants in small business in Victoria. The consideration of environmental and personal factors in understanding Vietnamese migrant business start-ups, survival and Ethnic Entrepreneurship theories has been the focus of discussion for this study. Firstly, there is a general consensus of what contributing environmental and personal factors influence the Vietnamese migrant in business start-up. Secondly, the thesis looks at how these factors are associated with the Ethnic Entrepreneurship theories identified in the literature. Lastly, the work identifies what factors have contributed to the Vietnamese migrant in sustaining their small business.

Vietnamese Service Small Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) are becoming increasingly conscious of the importance of business model innovation. While companies may have extensive investments and processes for exploring new ideas, they often have little if any ability to innovate the business models through which these inputs will pass. So it makes good business sense for companies to develop the capability to innovate their business models. This study has explored the key indicators to business model innovation, which previous academic research has identified, as well as cognition in understanding these indicators. Study on some case companies in Vietnamese service industry are provided to underlined its importance, therein indicating how these companies innovate their business models. Those companies that focus on change management and service innovation management, as well as utilize resources from government policies have obviously elevated high quality for service and product, and continually benchmark their activities will get better performance within their industry sectors.

After Vietnam’s economic Renovation Policy (Doi moi Policy) effectively started in 1987 and after Vietnam official joined in World Trade Organization (WTO) Vietnam has attracted investors from many countries. Foreign direct investment commitments increased rapidly, but the rate of actually implemented project is rather low and the failure rate is high (see figure 1). Beside the constraints of economic and political, foreign firms are also affected by the cultural differences (Ari, 2003). Therefore, foreign firms have to face with the fundamental issue of human resource management localization. And the success depends on their cognition of Vietnamese culture’s values and characteristics. This study examines Vietnamese culture characteristics. From that, discuss about some management practices which meet Vietnamese’s culture. To be able to provide foreign investors effective practice suggestions, this study through various channels tries to understand the frustrations of foreign investors in Vietnam, discuss with Vietnamese working in foreign firms and Vietnamese managers to examine the possibility of practices localization. This study found that Vietnamese language and village community are the two main factors which made Vietnamese culture some characteristics, shared with John Kleinen (1999)’s study. Moreover, this study provides various business and management practices and strong suggests that when setting direct salary for employees, firms should consider to their employees’ family members; Develop appraisal system to force employee’s performance. This thesis studies some of the major factors affecting relationship development between Vietnamese and North American business people, including: the different status of foreigners, the economic needs of the Vietnamese, the unsettled environment, the different conception of working relationships and the importance of face. The focus of the empirical research is the relationship development between Vietnamese and North American negotiators. A review of the Vietnamese culture and the pertinent literature led to the formulation and thesis of three hypotheses with respect to: the most important issue for the Vietnamese negotiator, the type of relationship wanted by the Vietnamese negotiator, and the impact of status differential on the relationship. Two principal research methods were used to test these hypotheses. First, a questionnaire was distributed to business people attending business classes at the University of Economics of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Second, a series of interviews was conducted with Vietnamese and North American business people living and working in Vietnam. The findings confirm that the Vietnamese emphasize the development of good working relationships with their negotiating counterparts. It should be noted, however, that the concept of a good working relationship is conceived differently than in North America. The second hypothesis is partially supported by the data; the Vietnamese negotiators seem to attach more importance to the evaluation of the trust of their partners, rather than to competitive or cooperative objectives. This is because the Vietnamese negotiators want to make sure they will not be in a situation in which they might lose face. This appears to be the main relationship objective of the Vietnamese negotiators. No conclusive evidence has been found to endorse the third hypothesis. Although status differential affects the behavior of Vietnamese negotiators, it does not affect the way they develop relationships with their North American partners. Possibly, the special status of North American business people, and the similar basis of all business interactions, have led the Vietnamese to have specific relationship objectives when negotiating with North Americans, whatever their status might be.

Nicholson, Gavin John. "Succession Planning Management (SPM): A Case Study of Vietnamese Family Owned Business in Australia". Thesis, 2018. https://vuir.vu.edu.au/36970/.

Texto completo da fonte
Resumo:
Succession Planning Management (SPM) is the process of management ownership leadership transition from incumbent to successor. SPM is directly related to governance for family owned businesses (FOB’s) and an effective succession plan helps to provide a degree of confidence that is necessary for the proper functioning of a market economy. As FOB’s contribute some thirty-three percent of the nominal gross domestic product (GDP) to Australia’s social and economic environment, effective SPM is clearly an important consideration in ensuring the continuity of the family business structure. This study reports a case study of succession planning management in eight Vietnamese family owned businesses in Australia. In 1975, people from Vietnam formed the first mass migration of Asian people to Australia and have since established themselves in business, politics and education. This study presents a dynamic conceptualisation of Vietnamese family owned business, illustrating SPM practices in the community as reflective of three rising levels of influence: succession planning, that it is defined initially by the founder’s personality and experience, by wider community influences and then by the selection, preparation and the successors elevation to the head of the family business. The successors describe how Vietnamese cultural beliefs shaped their transition into the family business and their efforts to be accepted as a competent choice by the founder, to be accepted as the patriarch of the family, and to be seen in the wider business community as having the same business acumen and social standing as the founder. The collected research data, identifies push and pull factors that are linked to contextual, relational and business transition factors and are reorganised into three action orientated themes: to control, to thrive and to survive. These themes contribute to the formulation of a suggested SPM framework for Vietnamese FOB. Finally, the study illustrates SPM transition from the founder (1st generation) to the current generation (2nd) and provides an extension for future research (3rd generation) for SPM in Vietnamese FOB in Australia.

Electronic commerce (known as EC or e-commerce) is exponentially booming in emerging markets like Vietnam. More and more players is trying to set their foot in this fierce but potentially profitable market. Established in 2010, Tiki Corporation (Tiki) – Vietnam-based e-commerce start up – has become one of fastest growing platforms in the market, compared with foreign brands. Choosing niche market as selling books online, Tiki gradually won customers’ trust by its unique services and has expanded into general merchandise platform as today. Backed by established funds and strong investors, adopting customer-driven approach, Tiki has leveraged technology to offer customers the most convenient ways to experience online shopping. This thesis seeks to investigate critical success factors of an EC corporate suggested by Choi et al. (2006) by applying them to Tiki’s story. Those critical success factors categorized by tangible assets, intangible assets and process are demonstrated in the conformity with Tiki case study. Although several studies have focused on diverse aspects of ownership and capital structure, some limitations still exist. First, most previous studies have concentrated on the influence of ownership structure on firm performance, but there is a lack of research about its effect on financing decisions. Concretely, while the relationship between ownership structure and capital structure has been established theoretically, only a few empirical studies have examined this linkage, especially in developing countries. In addition, the studies have often concentrated on managerial ownership, insider ownership, institutional ownership, or ownership concentration. There is limited empirical evidence on the influence of foreign and state ownership on capital structure, although these kinds of ownership have recently become common and important in developing economies because of a sharp increase in foreign investment and the equitisation process. Second, several theories and studies have examined capital structure; however, there is no single theory that can fully interpret the effect of capital structure on firm performance. Specifically, empirical evidence shows different and contradictory results and indicates that this relationship depends significantly on the specific circumstances. Therefore, the purpose of this research was to investigate the effect of ownership on capital structure and, subsequently, the influence of capital structure on firm performance in Vietnam, which is considered a typical developing country. To achieve this objective, the research used unbalanced panel data from all non-financial listed firms in Vietnam during the period 2007–2012 and employed pooled ordinary least squares, random effects and fixed effects regression methods, and the dynamic panel generalised method of moments for analysing data. Although various approaches were applied, all results were consistent. Specifically, the study found that whereas foreign ownership has a negative effect on leverage, state ownership has a positive influence. Managerial ownership has a positive relation, but the effect of large ownership on debt level is not conclusive. Additionally, the results revealed that foreign ownership affects inside ownership influence on financing decisions. In particular, foreign ownership decreases the positive effect of managerial ownership on debt level. The research results also indicate that all ratios of long-term debt, short-term debt and total debt in both book and market value are significantly and negatively related to return on asset, return on equity and Tobin Q. A non-linear relationship between leverage and firm performance only appears when performance is measured by return on equity and capital structure measured by total debt and short-term debt. These findings imply that firms with different ownership type may not be equal with respect to access to capital sources. State-owned firms could have substantial advantages through access to the debt market because they receive preferential treatment from stateowned banks. Additionally, this research provides evidence of an active monitoring role of foreign investors. Foreign owners with experience, knowledge and incentives can help firms to reduce agency costs of equity through actively monitoring the management. This research also supports the argument that one of the greatest concerns of managers is to retain or increase their control because it provides them with discretion in making decisions or accessing their private benefits. Moreover, the research findings indicate that in developing countries, an increase in debt can decrease firm performance because of high interest rates, exhausted cash flow or inefficient monitoring of debt.

This dissertation will examine the Vietnamese communities of Texas and consists of two parts. The first part explores the circumstances that stimulated the growth and eventual dominance of Vietnamese immigrants in two entrepreneurial niches – the nail salon and the shrimping industry. This study is thus a sociological examination of private enterprise, and the first research objective is to investigate the roles of the various market and non-market factors that were crucial in fueling the development of these two businesses. In the sociology of entrepreneurship, a key concern is locating the causal determinants of entrepreneurship. That is, aside from regular market forces, the social conditions associated with patterns of entrepreneurship need to be investigated. This study therefore explores the political, institutional, and cultural circumstances that help to explain the development of the nail salon and fishery businesses in Texas that market forces cannot govern. The second research objective of this dissertation is to use a racial formations framework to investigate the racial implications of the proliferation of these two entrepreneurial niches in their respective communities. The growth and spread of these businesses have had consequences for the loss of traditional community, the construction of racial identity, and the maintenance or reconstruction of new racial identity in the context of a multicultural work setting that includes other racial and ethnic minorities. The following seeks to provide insight into these racial phenomena by way of the case of Vietnamese Americans engaged in entrepreneurship.

Before the Vietnamese brides came to Taiwan, they were probably full of expectations and look forward to the cross-national marriages. However, due to their weak foundation of emotional connection, the disadvantaged financial situation and the lack of the social supporting network, they are prone to be marginalized in the society. This research is taking the Vietnamese ladies who were working in the pornographic industry or practicing sex-related business as the research object. Through extensive data collection and interviews in depth with these Vietnamese ladies, it is to conclude some factors that might lead to their engagement in sex-related business and to understand the reason for them to come to Taiwan and their living situation after their arrivals. It is also to confer the populations, traits, causes and process of entering the sex-related business. At the same time to understand how their fellow village friends play the role towards those Vietnamese ladies engagement in the sex-related business and the motivation, temptation and opportunities to get engaged the sex-related business, as well as the change of their values and the adaptation after they joined the industry. This research based on purposive sampling method, to choose four Vietnamese ladies who came to Taiwan by legal marriage but are now working as KTV bar girls in the areas of Chupei City and Chutung Township in Hsinchu County and another Vietnamese lady who came to Taiwan as foreign worker but flee from her employer as the object of the research. The interviews with those Vietnamese ladies who are engaged in the sex-related business are mainly based on the qualitative research method, to study the course and adaptation of engaging in the sex-related business, and further to construct and explain a theoretical model of their engagement in the sex-related business. The research is based on the theory of Age-Graded Informal Social Control Theory Criminal Behavior by Sampson and Laub, the Theory of Differential Association by Sutherland, and the General Strain Theory by Agnew to be the foundation to the interviews. The finding is as follows: 1. The financial difficulty of the Family-of-Origin 2. Vietnamese ladies came to Taiwan, they are generally lack of connection of the constraints by informal society, and the function of so called “Family” did not bring into full play. 3. The personal important life incidents have great influence on the engagement of criminal and indecent behaviors. 4. If the adaptability to the new environment is poor, under the pressurizing living situation, they are tend to have nervous and negative emotions; if they do not get any support and helps in time, they will use means of attack solution to terminate or flee away from the pressure, which will lead to criminal or indecent behaviors. 5. The learning behavior of engaging in the sex-related business is normally occurred in the closed Vietnamese ladies’ groups; they learn the techniques, attitudes and motivations of the sex-related business through the interaction with the Vietnamese fellow villagers.。 6. Those Vietnamese ladies who are engaged in the sex-related business tend to rationalize their own behaviors to reduce the feeling of guilt, they are also lack of self confidence, and most of them are inferior, pessimistic and have low degrees of self-control; they are also more materialistic. 7. The course of Vietnamese ladies engaged in the sex-related business:The environmental and economical factors of the Family-of-Origin → Life incidents in the Country of Origin → Get married or come to work in Taiwan → The important life incidents after coming to Taiwan and the pressuring and nervous living situation upon arrival → Get way from home or get divorced or flee from the original employer → Joined the social groups of Vietnamese fellow villagers → Engaged in to the sex-related business Based on the above conclusions, the recommendations are as below: 1. To have a healthy family structure that fully functionalized as a family. 2. To ensure the working rights and to increase the working opportunities for Vietnamese ladies. 3. To provide all kinds of social resources, and to help them to adapt to the new environment as early as possible. 4. To set up a supporting and caring network system to provide services in time. 5. Base on the multi-culture’s position to encourage better communication among the local society and the foreign spouses. This dissertation examines a number of aspects of the Vietnamese-Australian community and traces their progress from the mid-1970s when the bulk of these migrants were refugees. The rates of unemployment over the past two decades for this group are the focus of much research and the results of this research are discussed at length. Similarly, the types of employment that these people entered are studied in depth by eminent researchers, and these results are also discussed. The main focus of this study, however, concerns the working conditions of members of the Vietnamese-Australian community who are not very proficient in the English language. A number of these people were interviewed for this project and produced some very important data. The interviewees talked of their working conditions, which included their rates of pay, and the entitlements that they should legally receive, but do not. There are a perceived number of reasons for the plight of these workers, and the people who endure such pay and conditions discuss these reasons.

In recent decade, the cutting-edge development of the information and communication technology has hugely creating the opportunity for individuals, institutes or the enterprise as a whole in the way of doing business whether in the physical world or in the virtual one. Obviously beyond the traditional trade, what the current society demands are not only good products or services but also real-time as well as correct information which can surpass their counterparts or competitors. As in the same token, the e-Government also appeared in leaps and bounds in the twentieth century, which recently developed rapidly in Vietnam as well. Accordingly, this study aims to explore how fast the e-government has gone in Vietnam and how well the e-government has been implemented and adopted in Vietnam, where in the current research the determinant factors influencing e-government adoption have been explored and analyzed in Vietnam. The survey in this study has targeted a huge number of Vietnam people who to some extent have enough understanding of Vietnamese e-Government operation. Upon the data collection and analysis, descriptive and exploratory statistical analyses were carried out. The findings have shown that four determinant factors, i.e., performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, and facilitating condition have significant impacts on e-government adoption. Equally important, different adoption behavior on different education levels, genders, and marital status are also distinctively identified in the current study. All of them indicate the diverse requirements and the discrepancies in every walk of life in Vietnam.

The study aims to understand and identify from key Vietnamese stakeholders’ perspectives what the critical factors are for the successful design, delivery and management of offshore MBA education programmes. The study will provide comprehensive insight and understanding of the identity, nature and criticality of factors crucial to the long-term viability and ultimately the sustainability of offshore MBA programmes in Vietnam. The findings of the study are valuable to current and future foreign educational providers and local partner institutions, students, sponsors, the community and other relevant stakeholders. The research is based on a qualitative paradigm and uses the case study approach. Three case organisations, all current providers of offshore MBA education in Vietnam are used. Both primary and secondary data is collected. Primary data is collected via interviews and focus groups with representation of a number of key stakeholder groups from each of the case organisations while secondary data is collected from official documents from these three case organisations. It is envisaged that such a broad spectrum of views from different stakeholders will provide good insight into and add greater validity of the factors local Vietnamese deem are valuable and need to be factored in the design, delivery and management of offshore MBA programmes. The study found that, in the main, stakeholders prefer the international MBA programmes because it allows the transfer of critical contemporary knowledge and the transfer, from the foreign partner, technical hardware (such as infrastructure, technology, and machinery) and managerial ‘software’ (skills such as leading, managing, problem-solving, negotiation etc) essential to effectively operate and compete in a global marketplace. The findings also show that stakeholders generally have had good experiences with their case organisations, and that their expectations have mostly been met. However, programme quality is a key concern across all stakeholder groups and covers a broad range including most importantly programme and curriculum design, programme delivery, namely the expertise and contribution of teaching staff, and programme management. A key emergent finding is the need to factor the Vietnamese context in teaching and learning. Given that Vietnam is an emerging economy, stakeholders felt that the programme needs to be flexible enough to embrace the specific needs of the local business and industry. The findings highlight the need for increased networking between programme providers and the business sector. Another key finding relates to more rigorous student selection and admission criteria as these are deemed to be vital for the overall control of programme quality and sustainability. All stakeholder groups perceive that offshore MBA programmes have a potentially large and positive impact on the local Vietnamese economy; well qualified graduates can make great leaders and managers and contribute directly and indirectly to the national budgets. Therefore, the government needs to ensure that offshore education programmes are given a priority in policy implementation.

Tran, Nhi. "MONASH-VN: Development of a dynamic CGE model for the Vietnamese economy and analysis of structural changes during 1996-2003". Thesis, 2007. https://vuir.vu.edu.au/29422/.

Texto completo da fonte
Resumo:
This thesis is concerned with the construction and application of MONASH-VN (hereafter MVN), a large-scale dynamic computable general equilibrium (CGE) model of Vietnam. The model is designed to provide the capacity for not only detailed analysis of economic policies but also forecasts and analyses of economic history. After constructing the model, I use it to conduct an analysis of the structural changes in the Vietnamese economy over the period 1996-2003. This was a period of rapid growth of around seven percent per annum, despite adverse shocks such as the Asian economic crisis in the late 1990s. MVN’s theoretical structure is based on that of the MONASH model of the Australian economy (Dixon and Rimmer 2002). It has a detailed disaggregation of industries and factors of production, a detailed representation of technologies and preferences, taxes and margins, and a detailed representation of government accounts, balance of payment accounts, and net foreign liabilities. The dynamic features include the inter-temporal links between flow and stock variables for physical capital accumulation, for debt and savings, and a wage-employment adjustment mechanism. The MVN model captures the structure and characteristics of the Vietnamese economy via the calibration of the model using the Vietnamese input-output tables, the adoption of appropriate substitution elasticities and the representation of features which are pertinent to the Vietnamese economy, such as particular types of taxes and transfers, and types of transactions with the rest of the world specific to Vietnam. In particular, it includes many equations which allow the use of statistical data reported by Vietnamese statistical agency at different aggregation and reliability levels. I carry out two major simulations with MVN to analyse in detail the structural changes in the Vietnamese economy over the period 1996-2003. The first is the historical simulation, in which observed changes in economic variables (such as changes in GDP, industries outputs, labour and capital stocks, household consumption, imports and exports) are imposed on the model, and changes in structural variables (such as technologies and preferences) are calculated endogenously. The second simulation is the decomposition simulation, in which the contributions of those structural changes to the economic performance of the economy over the period under study are evaluated. Simulation results show that there have been significant structural changes in the Vietnamese economy over the period. The most important change is technical improvement in using primary factors and other inputs in most sectors. Overall, technical improvement accounted for 34 percent of the growth in real GDP over the period. The second important structural change is the favourable shifts in foreign preferences for Vietnamese exports and the improvement of the terms of trade, which contributed about 23 percent to the growth in real GDP. Employment growth also contributed strongly to the growth in real GDP (17 percent). Other sources of growth in real GDP include changes in household preferences toward manufactured goods and services and away from primary products; the increase in land area for primary industries, the decrease in barriers to international trade; the shift in preferences of all users toward domestically-produced goods and away from imported goods; the increase in the marginal propensity to save; and the increase in the investment-capital ratios. All of those factors help explain the strong performance of the Vietnamese economy during the period under study. This type of analysis provides much richer insights into structural changes in the economy than the standard growth accounting framework. The results of the simulations can be used to evaluate the effectiveness of economic policies or to inform forecasts into the future.

Because of the stigma and the description of pornography that mass media toward the women who engaged in the sex-related business, the motive of the research was to understand the process of their work. The methods of the research were by means of participant observation and in-depth interviews. And the objects of the research were based on the ten Vietnamese women who worked in a certain refreshment room in Tainan County. The process of the research started from looking for the cases in Dec. 2007 and quit field in Sep. 2008. It totally took ten months. According to the research results, the reason why the women of transnational marriage got married was to improve the financial circumstances of their family-of-origin before they came to Taiwan. However, they found their illusions were destroyed after they came to Taiwan. By using the post-colonial feminism as the research background and labeling theory to examine their current situation, it appeared that the multi-oppressions of sex, class, and race has infiltrated their lives of marriage, relationship of gender, applying for jobs and working environment. This made them choose to escape their houses. Thus, they were introduced or cheated to enter the sex-related business by their friends. Although they were sick of the job functions, they could totally have the freedom of moving and financial independence. They obtained emotional supports from their fellows and got compensation for their marriage from their boyfriends. They gained respects and senses of achievement from aiding their family-of-origin. However, they and their husbands were growing further apart and the children has become the only contact among them. During the interviews, some interviewers tried their best to maintain the life style of decent women, but others were addicted to narcotics and were debt-ridden. Although they helped their family-of-origin improve the straitened circumstances, they couldn’t get rid of the sexism that Taiwan society gives, the contempt of race, and the scorn that people treat the women practicing sex-related business. They denied social stigma and were sick of social discrimination. They regarded sex industries as their gangplank of life. Therefore, they lived in two different worlds contradictorily. They were constantly stigmatized in Taiwan whereas they were good daughters in Vietnam. However, they were eager to be loved, understood, and respected in their heart. Based on the research results, our government should establish multicultural views for our nationals. And then the authorities should guide the women of transnational marriage to make use of social resources and restrict the agents of marriage. Moreover, their families in Taiwan should use respectful attitude to face the cultural differences between races. Besides, we expect that the mass media can report transnational marriage in many ways instead of reporting it negatively to eliminate the discrimination that Taiwan society gives.

Resumo:
Supply chain management (SCM) has been receiving greater attention among academics and organizations and is viewed as a potential source of increasing competitive advantages. Thus, the aim of this study is to investigate the role of supply chain management in order to enhance the competitiveness of Vietnamese coffee. This topic was chosen because there has been little previous research done to study the competitive advantages of coffee products in general and of applying systems thinking in order to enhance the competitive advantages of Vietnamese coffee in particular. This research discovers suitable sub-system models for different chains of the whole coffee supply chain. Interrelationships between these sub-systems and their leverage points are also explored and identified in order to reduce cost, increase quality and upgrade the competitive advantages of Vietnamese coffee products. This research focuses on an understanding of supply chain management in order to enhance the competitiveness by asking the following research questions: What are the main drivers and barriers in the supply chain towards improving the competitiveness of Vietnamese coffee products? What is the most appropriate systems model for each sub-system in the coffee’s supply chain?, and How can systems thinking and modelling be used to manage a whole supply chain more effectively by reducing cost and enhancing the competitiveness of coffee products internationally? Initial findings of the study consist of three sub-system models (including sub-systems of production_chapter 2, processing_chapter 3, and export_chapter 4) to explore relationships among different variables in production, processing and export stages. A causal loop diagram for the whole supply chain was then developed (chapter 5), which helped to identify the overall relationships of the Vietnamese coffee supply chain from production to final customers. In addition, a sequential approach, by combining two established modelling techniques (Causal loop diagram and Bayesian Belief Networks - BBNs) was applied to identify the leverage points in the Vietnamese coffee supply chain for increasing the competitive advantages of the product (chapter 6). Finally, potential interventions were implemented in the coffee supply chain management philosophy for increasing the competitiveness of coffee products, and directions and recommendations for future research are also discussed.

Karadjis, Michael. "The Vietnamese Communist Party debate and the leading role of the state sector : ideological straight-jacket, vested interests or real social progress?" Phd thesis, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/1885/150164.

Resumo:
Discussion of 'economies in transition' often assumes movement from socialist planning to free market capitalism. Vietnam has moved significantly in this direction, but the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) claims the long-term transition is to a higher form of socialism than in the past. CPV cadres list a variety of aspects that differentiate their 'socialist-oriented market economy' from a 'capitalist market economy'. What this orientation consists of, and whether there is anything "socialist" about it, is however much debated. This dissertation focuses on the state-owned enterprises as one way to assess whether any authentic socialist orientation exists. It finds considerable complexity in state enterprises, so the assessment is not straight forward. But the complexity includes significant socialist substance. Their decisions regarding investment or profit distribution are not purely commercially driven, and their purported "inefficiency" is often connected to socially beneficial activity, not only for their own workers but within society at large. This helps explain the stubborn tenacity of the state sector, despite years of "liberalising" legislative changes. This is not merely elites who "oppose reform" due to their vested interests. Significant sectors of society also have an interest in opposing the kind of "reform" that would be detrimental to their interests and the social good overall. These conflicting pressures on and in state enterprises are reflected in the debates within the CPV about socialist orientation. One central feature of this orientation is that public forms of ownership must predominate even while capitalism forms part of the economy. But challenging this is a minority who blur the distinction between the socialist-oriented and a capitalist market economy. These two broad tendencies are often labelled "conservatives" and "reformers," implying a value judgement. I propose to rename them the Socialist-Orientation Tendency (SOT), and the Market-Orientation Tendency (MOT), signifying opposing emphases within the "market economy with a socialist orientation" equation. They do not represent hard and fast factional groupings, but rather tendencies of thought; many cadres incorporate elements of both, and both have sprouted sub-tendencies. The role of the state enterprises is often central to the debate between these tendencies and among analysts of Vietnam's political economy. Much has been written showing that they fall short of their socialist purpose. That they allegedly have little relation to social progress is often seen as evidence that the Socialist Orientationists are merely elite ideologues or corrupt officials who use the socialist label to cover their intransigence or malfeasance. This dissertation takes issue with this view.

The general objective of this study is to measure and analyse the impact of tourism development on Vietnam's economy. The study will concentrate on the activities of the tourist industry in 1994 in Vietnam as a whole. The measurement will be done by using the latest input-output tables for Vietnam, which were developed for the year 1989. However, during the five-year period it has been assumed that the input-output structures have been unchanged significantly, therefore, the results of the analysis are expected to be applicable to the current situation. Moreover, if they do change, or if the direction of the changes is known, the economic outcomes of the analysis can be interpreted to indicate current conditions.
