A growing body of literature presenting the results of research regarding text book illustrations indicates that visual gender bias is obvious in several acade mic fields, including business communication. To date, however, no study has extended those observations to clip art files in popular computer programs. The current study examines over 14,000 clip art images for gender bias from six different Windows-based programs: WordPerfect Presentations, PowerPoint 4.0, Microsoft Publisher 2.0, Harvard Graphics 3.0, Power Up!, and Corel 3.0, CD-ROM. Tabulations indicate that only 4.54% of total images depict women and that they are typically presented in stereotypical roles, such as secretaries, nurses, teachers. Reasons include a male bias in the computer science field (a 3:1 ratio in programming), apparent gender-based differences in relationships with machines, and a societal gap in traruitioning between old and new media.

The present study aimed to investigate the employment of computer-aided translation (CAT) tools among Iranian freelance translators. Fulford and Granell-Zafra (2005) proposed a model encompassing both information and communications technology (ICT) and CAT tools to support a large number of activities, including document production, information search and retrieval, communications, business management, marketing and work procurement, and translation creation. CAT tools are employed to support document production, business management, and translation creation; and ICT tools are used to support the rest. A questionnaire was used for data collection from Iranian freelancers. As the results indicated, Iranian freelance translators were more interested to employ general-purpose software applications, such as word processing programs and presentation software, whereas they showed less interest in the employment of special-purpose software, such as accounting packages and database software. Moreover, most participants approved the effectiveness of CAT tools in their work.

In the modern and dynamic life conditions of the metropolis, business is gaining momentum of reformatting, as the military events in Ukraine and the pandemic have brought fashion to a new level of development and functioning to maintain the competitiveness of manufacturers and to satisfy consumers. In order to constantly update the assortment, companies have to quickly respond to market changes, fashion trends and the development of innovations in the field of computer technology and software, because now most areas of human activity have gone digital. Properly organized and planned design and technological preparation of production using automated CAD design is of great importance to increase business efficiency and competitiveness of a specific manufacturer’s products. The article researched, analyzed and provided a comparison of the possibilities of using modern software products, namely programs for visualizing products of the fashion industry on a virtual mannequin. Such programs as CLO3D, Browzwear, “Electronic Mannequin”, Marvelous Designer, OptiTex 11, Vidya Assyst were considered. The capabilities of the CLO3D program were demonstrated and a comparison of the virtual product and the finished sample was made. It was determined that the programs CLO3D, Browzwear, “Electronic mannequin” are intended for visualization of products and organization of work at enterprises, because the possibility of printing patterns gives a great advantage in the automation of production, they have a wide selection of materials and a range of functions to optimize work in production. Programs like Marvelous Designer, Vidya Assyst are for marketing purposes, animation creation and product presentation. We came to the conclusion that the OptiTex 11 program has insufficient realism in the execution of 3D products due to the lack of variety of materials and has an outdated interface. The expediency of this development has been proven in a theoretical and practical way.

The topic of the impact of digitalization on children with severe speech disorders (SSD) is relevant because every year more and more children start using smartphones, tablets and computers to learn, play and communicate with other people. However, children with SSD may be particularly vulnerable to the negative effects of digitalization. Therefore, the issue of the impact of digitalization on children with SSD is important for parents and teachers. Digitalization has a huge impact on various aspects of lives for children of severe speech disorders. One of the main advantages of digitalization for such children is the possibility of using special programs and applications that help them develop speech and communication skills. For example, special educational applications for children with speech disorders that help them learn to pronounce sounds and words correctly, as well as develop reading and writing skills. Such applications can be used as an addition to regular classes with a psychologist, and as an independent tool for speech development. Observation of children with SSD has shown that the use of a computer optimizes the process of speech correction, and also contributes to the harmonization of child development. Thanks to the use of information and communication technologies in psychological work, the cognitive activity of children increases. The use of presentations, computer technologies increase the effectiveness of correctional and pedagogical work. However, despite all the advantages of digitalization, its impact on children with severe speech disorders can be ambiguous. Studies conducted on this topic have shown that excessive use of digital technologies can lead to deterioration of communication skills in such children as well as inhibit their development in general. They will be inactive and obese, will have diffi culty sleeping and may show aggression. In addition, modern children are very susceptible to “clip thinking”, which arises in response to the abundant fl ow of information. In general, the impact of digitalization on children with TNR depends on how this technology is used. Parents and teachers should ensure the correct use of gadgets and programs, as well as control the time spent by children in front of the screen. This will help to avoid possible problems and maximize the opportunities provided by digitalization.

Purpose of the study. The aim is to create a technique targeted at the development of simulation skills in higher education environment, where students are competent in applying information technologies in economics. The relevance of the research lies in the fact that the existing methodological developments often focus on a specific software tool or methodology that cannot respond to all economic problems. A specialist in simulation modeling should possess integrative interdisciplinary knowledge from related scientific fields, for example, probability theory and mathematical statistics, higher mathematics, be familiar with other methods of solving economic problems: linear, nonlinear, dynamic programming, optimization; show proficiency in structural and functional analysis; be able to explore complex processes and systems comprehensively.Materials and methods. The following pedagogical approaches and teaching methods were implemented in this research: ● a systematic approach to solving complex problems based on the modelling economic objects as systems operating in a certain environment, ● activity approach to develop students’ professional competences in the process of creation, debugging and optimization of computer models of economic systems; ● problem teaching method in the framework of research and analysis of educational problems of the subject area; ● implemented interactive teaching methods; ● multimedia methods in the content of teaching materials of the discipline, including electronic manuals, educational videos, as well as multimedia presentations. The research also utilized information technologies, in which computers, communication equipment and software environments are: ● means to provide educational material to students for the transfer of knowledge; ● tools for designing, developing and conducting simulation experiments. In addition, we used the following special professional technologies, methods and tools in the process of teaching students: ● structural and functional modeling methodology; ● discrete-event approach to simulation methodology; ● special software for development and research of simulation models of economic processes and systems: Arena 15.0, AnyLogic 8.3.2.According to the requirements of the new educational standards, the student must master a sufficiently large amount of general cultural, professional and specialized competencies included in the curriculum. The application of the proposed approaches and methods allows to provide effective development of skills of simulation modeling of educational programs for bachelors of «Applied Informatics» and «Business Informatics».Results.The study created a method of teaching students the skills of simulation modeling. The research also established the model of formation of readiness of the IT specialist to the development of simulation models of economic processes and systems in higher school. We also identified important methodological conditions for the formation of professional competencies of students in the field of modeling, such as: ● application of a systematic approach to the analysis of domain problems, as well as for the synthesis of mathematical simulation models of business processes and economic systems; ● practical orientation of the content of training (selection and research in the educational process of the most characteristic, typical problems of the economy); ● integration of interdisciplinary knowledge, methods and approaches to solve complex problems.Conclusion.The method can equip students with skills of simulation modeling with various areas of practical application. First, this technique can be used by university students who are engaged in pursuing practical skills and basic system knowledge in the field of simulation. Secondly, teachers can use it, conducting courses: “Computer modeling”, “Mathematical and simulation modeling”, “Modeling of processes and systems” in the educational process of the University to improve the professional competence of students training simulation modeling. Third, the outcomes may be of interest to managers of educational programs in the areas of: “Applied Informatics”, “Business Informatics”, etc. to improve the structure and sequence of disciplines of competence-oriented curricula. Finally, the application of the proposed methodology in the educational process of the University will enhance professional expertise of young specialists and undoubtedly address the needs of potential employers.

Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2002.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: After many years of speculation about the possible introduction of a capital gains tax in South Africa, the tax is finally with us. Coming on top of the move to a residence basis of taxation, the introduction of the capital gains tax will impose a massive burden on the limited, skilled administrative recourses available to taxpayers and the SARS alike. Amongst investors and even some professional financial advisors such as auditors and attorneys there still is confusion and not a lack of knowledge on CGT. Appropriate planning and structuring is seldom performed. The potential CGT liability escalates every year depending on the growth rate of the particular asset. CGT will therefor be an unavoidable and growing problem for investors. Planning for the CGT goes hand in hand with estate planning and requires decisions to be taken now. The purpose is to position and structure your portfolio to avoid or reduce future tax liability (CGT and estate duty). In this study an Excel program was developed in order to calculate CGT. The model (Estate Advisor) also has a decision function and can calculate and predict future CGT liability. The purpose of the model is to test the result of a range of decisions and assumptions quickly and accurately. This enables the investor to decide on entities and structures that would best suit his situation given the assets under his control. The Estate Advisor is a tool for producing different scenarios of future situations regarding CGT and estate duty. It helps the investor to investigate and consider different options regarding his investments with regard to CGT.

AbstractThe pandemic has opened up room for a creative reinvention of traditional teaching and learning formats making entrepreneurial skills, as, e.g., described in the EntreComp framework, a more pronounced part of the curriculum. As part of the course “Positive Computing and Diversity in Human Computer Interaction,” which is offered to students of different study programs within the computer science department, a (coding-free) two-day online hackathon was organized as an occasion to experience and strengthen entrepreneurial skills. Two major goals were pursued with the work documented in this chapter: (a) providing students with an intense, challenging hands-on experience of different facets of their own entrepreneurial potential, and (b) describing example hackathon events regarding the content, technical and organizational structure as recommendation for practitioners. Consequently, besides outlining a pilot hackathon, the chapter describes essential elements of the course, in which the hackathon was embedded, and content as well as didactic orchestration of both, the course and the hackathon. Evaluation data from two hackathon rounds are presented and taken up in a discussion and reflection.

The authors traced the process of revising and updating a long-existing Micro-Based Software class at the undergraduate level at Metropolitan State College of Denver. The course was designed to allow students to become proficient in end user computing at the operational business level. The revisions were prompted by the increasing sophistication of horizontal microcomputer application programs, the increase in the level of computer literacy among undergraduate School of Business students, and the students’ need for experience in problem solving and applying the theory they learned using the Microsoft Office software suite. A pilot class was taught utilizing the revised curriculum in the Fall of 2001. The revised curriculum involved using Web-based material and regular presentation sessions for solutions to assigned problems. An efficacy survey was administered at the end of the class, to determine student satisfaction with the revised curriculum. The success of the pilot class resulted in implementing the revised content in all sections of the Micro-Based Software class as of Spring semester, 2002.

This chapter discusses the conditions for the patentability of an invention. According to s. 1(1) of the UK Patents Act 1977, a patent may be granted only for an invention in respect of which the following conditions are satisfied: (a) the invention is new; (b) it involves an inventive step; (c) it is capable of industrial application; and (d) the grant of a patent for it is not excluded by subsections (2) and (3). Section 1(2) states that discoveries, scientific theories, and mathematical methods cannot be regarded as inventions and are thus not patentable; likewise barred from this status are works properly found within copyright, schemes for performing a mental act, playing a game, or doing business and computer programs, and also the presentation of information. Section 1(3) limits the role of patents by denying their protection to offensive, immoral, or antisocial inventions.

Corporate environmental reporting using the Internet – especially the WWW – is a rapidly emerging and increasingly popular method. Today, online environmental reporting has become part of business practices and daily affairs for a number of companies, and thus many of the environmental communication vehicles provided for companies’ target groups and other stakeholders (users) are available on the WWW: reports, brochures, leaflets, newsletters, press releases, slides, presentations, audio sequences, video clips and so forth are accessible via download and/or online, prepared for being pulled or automatically disseminated via e-mail or other current push technologies. Despite the considerable progress companies have made in recent years, however, it is not yet clear just how environmental reporting will advance to the next stage. In particular, the role of the Internet as an emerging computer-based medium and its unique capabilities in form and content need to be understood better. This chapter describes how to develop from early environmental reporting stages towards the more advanced sustainability reporting, while exploiting the Internet’s specific capabilities properly. This path is illustrated as a progression in environmental reporting along three dimensions: integration of financial and social issues into environmental reporting, provision of reporting instruments on various media and fine tuning communication vehicles according to users’ needs and preferences. These trends in terms of a more balanced reporting approach, cross media availability and customization seem to be converging to push the field towards sustainability reporting based on the Internet as a backbone for companies’ underlying ICT infrastructure. Without support from ICT, progress in the field toward sustainability reporting is seen as quite difficult, as moving away from orthodox environmental reporting is a complex task. Hence, a framework on how to use the Internet and its associated technologies is proposed, including four conceptual components: stakeholder analysis, information requirement analysis, XML-based document engineering and ICT architecture of an Internet-based reporting system. When employing such an Internet-based approach, it is argued here, the company will be in a position to carry out its tasks of information management well, using its human and organizational resources more efficiently, and communicating on environmental and sustainability issues in a meaningful way; that is, facilitating stakeholder dialogue, interactivity, feedback possibilities and tailor-made reports that respond precisely to the requirements of certain reporting standards and guidelines, or exactly to the information needs of the target groups.

In January 1975, the magazine Popular Electronics trumpeted the beginnings of a revolution. “Project Breakthrough,” the cover said: “World’s First Minicomputer Kit to Rival Commercial Models.” Inside, a six-page article described the Altair, an unassembled computer that could be ordered from MITS, a company in Albuquerque originally founded to sell radio transmitters for controlling model airplanes. To the uninitiated, it didn’t look like much of a revolution. For $397 plus shipping, a hobbyist or computer buff could get a power supply, a metal case with lights and switches on the front panel, and a set of integrated circuit chips and other components that had to be soldered into place. When everything was assembled, a user gave the computer instructions by flipping the panel’s seventeen switches one at a time in a carefully calculated order; loading a relatively simple program might involve thousands of flips. MITS had promised that the Altair could be hooked up to a Teletype machine for its input, but the circuit boards needed for the hookup wouldn’t be available for a number of months. To read the computer’s output, a user had to interpret the on/off pattern of flashing lights; it would be more than a year before MITS would offer an interface board to transform the output into text or figures on a television screen. And the computer had no software. A user had to write the programs himself in arcane computer code or else borrow the efforts of other enthusiasts. One observer of the early computer industry summed up the experience like this: “You buy the Altair, you have to build it, then you have to build other things to plug into it to make it work. You are a weird-type person. Because only weird-type people sit in kitchens and basements and places all hours of the night, soldering things to boards to make machines go flickety-flock.” But despite its shortcomings, several thousand weird-type people bought the Altair within a few months of its appearance. What inspired and intrigued them was the semiconductor chip at the heart of the computer.

There is a growing importance of computerization, information flow and the tremendous use of Information Technology (IT) in all the fields including business, education, government and medicine. The significant improvements in IT continue to occur at an ever-increasing pace. The speed, size, cost, and capabilities associated with computers and telecommunications provide a wealth of highly attractive opportunities for using this technology to help solve business problems or enhance current ways of doing business. There is a general recognition that students in secondary, further and higher education need to acquire IT skills that match the IT needs of the contemporary businesses. The major focus of this investigation concerns the development of IT skills among new entrants to the institute of higher learning to meet the changing needs of IT, especially in the businesses environment. Traditionally, the introductions to IT courses offered in the past were through the programming languages. There seems to be a trend to acquire IT skills moving away from programming and getting skills through off-the- shelf software packages. There are many reasons for this, including the availability of powerful and user-friendly software, such as word processing, databases and spreadsheets, which have raised the level of expectations in the use of IT for business and removed the need to learn to write computer programs in a traditional block structure language. If the software packages are considered, then the obvious question, “What should be the order of their presentation in a basic IT course?” emerges. The popularity of the Internet and its use in the business environment has made it necessary be included in the introduction to computers course. This paper explores several possible approaches for the acquisition of basic IT skills among new IT enthusiasts and proposes an Information Systems Approach for the acquisition of basic IT skills used in business.

Service innovation represents a challenge that has to be supported by specific actions of the higher education professionals. At European level, it was promoted by platforms developed under the Europe INNOVA and other initiatives, and it is now an important priority of the Europe 2020 strategy. Therefore, the academic environment should get aligned to this trend and prepare students for the complex character of the future service systems. This paper presents best practices and platforms to support an action program for getting aligned to the European trends in service innovation, undertaken within the ESF / POSDRU project INSEED (Strategic Program for promoting Innovation in Services by Open and Continuous Education). The program has five main objectives: A. Aligning university actions to the European strategy; B. Contributing to the activity of professional organizations and scientific communities at international level; C. Collaboration with European researchers on the topic of innovative services; D. Sustaining joint educational programs and curriculum in the domain of services, in correlation with European partners; E. Using the INSER@SPACE collaborative platform for promoting virtual educational resources and knowledge regarding the service science. Each objective is described by its specific actions and by a presentation of the applied practices, like: comprehending the strategies, programs and organisms related to the European Commission; analyzing the knowledge gaps; co-authoring articles with experts from European universities with common research interests; organizing scientific events in the domain of services; certifying undergraduate and postgraduate educational programs dedicated to sector services. An important example is the Service Engineering Master (SEM) from the Automation and Computer Science Faculty, University Politehnica of Bucharest, and its relation to other programs on service science, from Austria, Belgium, Portugal, Ireland, Germany and Czech Republic. The master is linked through a double degree agreement, with the Master in Service Engineering and Management (MESG) from the Faculty of Engineering -FEUP, University of Porto. The two programs complement each other, as SEM is IT-oriented and MESG is business-oriented. The paper compares them, based on their common elements and their particular contributions. As support for creating a global educational environment, we also present the INSER@SPACE collaborative platform developed by INSEED, with its three components: (i) a learning management system dedicated to educational courses concerning services; (ii) a semantic wiki on service science for creating an international community based on a clearly defined knowledge environment; (iii) educational resources provided as a service, with configurations dedicated to learning new technologies for service innovation.

Abstract Electronic spreadsheet packages which were originally developed to create budget and do financial computations can now be used to perform innovative computer-based analyses. As these packages make increasing inroads into engineering profession, variety of new and innovative professional and instructional applications are being emerged. No longer confined to accountants and business people — electronic spreadsheet utilizations in engineering ranging from sensitivity (parametric) analysis to optimization are becoming more popular. Recently, those engineers who have recognized the usefulness and power of newly added features to these programs have started exploring the possibility of using these packages as a decision-making tool in the area of computer-aided engineering. This growing use of spreadsheets stems from their ability to perform repetitive sophisticated calculations on real time and the availability of built in procedures desirable for technical presentation. To enhance their teaching and expose students to the applications of electronic spreadsheets, some engineering educators have started integrating these productivity tools into their courses. The computational power of new generation of personal computers in conjunction with ever increasing graphics and advanced mathematics capabilities of spreadsheets can now be employed to perform parametric or what-if analyses. It is the intent of this paper to demonstrate the use of spreadsheet packages to solve a wide spectrum of problems in mechanical engineering. The case studies used in this paper are taken directly or in some cases with slight modifications from undergraduate text books. The Borland Quattro Pro spreadsheet package version 3 has been utilized to perform spreadsheet-based engineering analyses.

Abstract This article describes a National Science Foundation sponsored project to promote technological education with a focus on composites manufacturing. This project has four components: (1)the promotion of careers in Technology to students in grades 7–11; (2) summer camps for students grades 7–11; (3) short courses for high school teachers; (4) developing new courses at the undergraduate level. For each component of the project, a rationale, detailed content, delivery methods, and assessment methods will be discussed. Experience indicates a need to reach secondary school students to make them aware of careers in Technology and related educational opportunities at two-year and four-year institutions and to present a positive and attractive image of the field. Our efforts are directed towards students in grades 7–11. To reach a maximum of students in a large geographic area using several approaches: 1. Presentations using distance learning facilities that allow interactive audio/video presentations at different sites. Faculty members on campus can communicate with six or more sites simultaneously and present computer-based materials, videos, and conduct live demonstrations. 2. School visits. Many schools do not have access to site for interactive video presentations. 3. A web site developed for the project contains regularly updated information about the project, information about composite materials, and the field of technology. Interested parties can register for various programs by filling out the appropriate forms on the web. 4. Special events such as National Engineers Week and Open House Days are used to establish personal contacts. This paper describes how the presentations are delivered, their contents, and how effective they are in promoting a positive image of technology. Another important component of this project is that each institution offers summer camps for students in grades 7–11 and short courses for high school teachers. Each of these activities concentrate on one specific technical area and offer both a general view of that area and how it can lead to rewarding careers in industry, and direct hands-on experiences.

The growth and competitiveness of any business, especially micro and SMEs, will increasingly depend on the ability to apply new knowledge, organization and working methods, as well as the capacity to engage in the commercialization of research and development to develop new products, services, or processes. In the information society, the development of new products, services, and processes requires the use of innovations resulting from the intellectual activity of creative people. For creators and successors in title of intellectual property rights (various projects, trademarks, inventions, computer programs, etc.) to be able to successfully develop and market their products, they need a functioning IPR protection system. The study used an analytical method to investigate research on the unlicensed commercial use of copyrighted works, a grammatical, systematic, teleological and historical method of interpreting legal provisions to assess the regulation of existing legal provisions and to propose amendments to anti-piracy legislation. Inductive and deductive research methods have been used to draw conclusions. The study concluded that when concluding a copyright or employment contract, it is very important to clearly define the transfer of copyright and its scope. It is important to obtain the right to use the work from both the employees and the cooperation partners, as well as to obtain the right to use the previously created work, including computer programs.
