Abstract: When World War I began in 1914, Britain had neither a conscript army nor any bureaucratic mechanism for implementing conscription. By 1916, however, it had the largest volunteer army in the history of the world. Such an astounding achievement was credited to patriotism and the efforts of Field Marshall Kitchener. In reflecting on this development, contemporaries and historians largely overlooked the religious culture of militarism that dominated the pre-war years as well as the impact of the church brigade movement. The brigades fused military discipline and training with religious teaching and spiritual formation, and they ensured that well over 50 percent of British boys received a form of military training in the decades prior to the conflict, popularizing the ideas of military organization, drill, and serving in the armed forces.

With over sixty plays to his credit, the Florentine notary Giovan Maria Cecchi (1518–87) was the most prolific Italian dramatist of the entire Renaissance. Not surprisingly, his fellow Florentines nicknamed him il Comico (the playwright) not only because of his great productivity, but also because of the unquestioned success of his works. In fact, his plays seemed to please audiences that ran the gamut from adolescent boys in confraternities to the grand-ducal court, from cloistered nuns in convents to carnival brigades of carefree young men. Clearly, Cecchi knew something about theatre and about audiences that worked to his advantage. This article proposes that Cecchi’s dramatic talent rested, in part, on his keen sense of language and on his ability to adapt it as required not only by the plots and characters of his plays, but also by his audiences, their context, and the changing social political situation of sixteenth-century Florence.

AbstractRecent research has shown that programs provided by youth development organisations are of considerable benefit to those young people who engage with the aims and activities of such programs. These programs (e.g. Scouts, Guides, Boys’ and Girls’ Brigades, Surf Lifesaving) are generally provided and run by adult volunteers. This article seeks to explore the main issues for volunteers with regard to implementing these programs, including the reasons why people volunteer in the first place, what community support and resourcing are available and the difficulties of running a program with too few volunteers. The main limiting factor in the success of these programs is the available volunteers, their individual skill levels, the time they have to give and whether they feel the return for their efforts is worthwhile. Community and parental recognition is also a significant factor in their satisfaction and longevity. Volunteers generally gain satisfaction and motivation through a mix of self-worth gained through community service and being able to pass on the program and ethos of their particular organisation. How long a volunteer serves as a leader is closely connected with their satisfaction level. The author's many years of experience at local and state level provides insight into the recruitment and retention of volunteer leaders and their important role in continuing to provide youth programs at the local level.

A technological innovation project is presented based on the design and manufacture of a robot prototype that supports studies oriented to the understanding and application of scientific methodology in rescue areas, as a support for the safety of brigades, which promotes it as relevant research. The use of nanotechnological resources leads it as a study of original technological innovation. The objective of this project is to innovate a search and rescue robot prototype so that in case of disasters the lives of the rescue brigades are not put at risk and in this way contribute to society. In order to contribute to the effort made by the nations in the face of the environmental impact, PEEK plastic, which is resistant to high temperatures, shocks, and is also considered a biomaterial, is contemplated as a material for the robot's structure.

The aims of the present study were to evaluate possible gender differences in the prevalence of physical aggression among adolescents, and to examine the association between sociodemographic factors and physical activity participation with physical aggression in boys and girls. The sample was composed of 6,529 high school students (aged 15-19 years) from public schools of the state of Santa Catarina. A questionnaire was applied to collect data regarding sociodemographic factors, involvement in physical aggressions and types of physical activity. Crude and adjusted binary logistic regression models were performed. Boys reported more involvement in physical aggression episodes (36.9%) compared to girls (26.0%, p<0.05). Boys who lived in urban areas (OR: 1.45) and did not live with the family (OR: 2.22), as well as girls enrolled in the night shift were more likely to engage in fights (OR: 1.26). Adolescents aged 17-19 years had reduced chances of getting involved in fights (OR Boys: 0.66; OR Girls: 0.80) compared to younger ones. The practice of team sports among boys (OR: 1.56) and the combined practice of team sports and individual physical activities among boys (OR: 1.91) and girls (OR: 1.36) were associated with physical aggressions. It was concluded that boys were more likely to engage in fights, mainly younger boys, who did not live with family and lived in urban areas. In boys and girls, the involvement in physical aggression was greater among those who are engaged in team sports.

"Since the fall of 2016, Cameroon has been the scene of a fratricidal and separatist conflict in its English-speaking part known as North-west and South-west (NWSW). This war has to date caused more than 3,000 loss of human lives, 700,000 Cameroonian refugees, and the closure of nearly 80% of schools. This conflict, orchestrated by a group of secessionist fighters known as ""Amba-boys"", which constitutes the ""Ambazonian movement"", has made the English-speaking regions the most militarized part of Cameroon. At the same time, a protest movement against the capture of power by the Biya regime has been formed since 2018 within the Cameroonian diaspora: the Anti-Sardinards Brigade (B.A.S). The objective of this work is therefore to understand the logic of action and the protest strategies of these two movements. To achieve this, we used a qualitative research method. It appears that these movements are fighting against a common adversary, namely: the regime in power for 40 years. However, their divergence lies at the ideological level and in their conflicting strategies. The Ambazonian movement advocates, through direct violence, secession in order to promote Anglophone sovereignty. While the B.A.S fights for the socio-political change of the country, through indirect violence. Keywords: conflict strategy, protest, movement, Anti Sardinards Brigade, ambazonien movement, conflict, secessionist, sociopolitical change "

This study examines the origins of the Boys' Brigade Christian Youth Movement and its historical development in British society, with further consideration of the work of the Boys' Brigade in South Africa, from the 1880s until the 1980s. This movement, which originated in an environment of Liberal Nonconformity, 'muscular' Christianity, and adolescent-centred educational and social outreach, was linked initially to the needs of the Sunday School movement in urban Scotland. From its evangelical and Volunteer base, the Brigade expanded into an international interdenominational youth organisation, establishing specific roots in South Africa. The present study pays attention to the composition, philosophy, •and objectives of the B.B. movement, and considers its military-inspired disciplinary and recreational programme in terms of social need, Christian mission, and social control. It also considers the evolution of the B.B. identity through changing historical contexts. The historical link between the B.B. and other youth movements is also noted, and particular attention is paid to the contentious issue of the Brigade's relationship with militarism. While the history of the B.B. over this period is ultimately one of declining influence, its enduring presence illuminates the continuity of conservative forms of church-based youth organisation.

The sites and settings of structured youth work have been a neglected sphere of study in contemporary human geography. This thesis addresses this silence through an examination of The Boys’ Brigade – a voluntary Christian uniformed youth work movement. Limited in geographic scope to Scotland, the thesis draws upon a multiple-methods research strategy comprising: a mail-based questionnaire, semi-structured interviews, and a period of participant observation, incorporating participatory approaches with boys. Resting upon Foucouldian theoretical foundations, and written with audiences both within and without academia in mind, the thesis argues that a failure to appreciate the spatialities of structured youth work settings invariably results in partial accounts of both the motives underpinning their voluntary provision by adults’ and boys’ participation in them. More specifically, it suggests that the spaces of structured youth work are realised through small-scale processes of negotiation between boys and adults that stabilise a shared spatio-temporal regime – a structure – through which youth work is conducted by both adults and boys. It contends that it is space itself, and particularly its purposive ordering, that is both enlisted and resisted to achieve this fleeting stabilisation with its attendant disciplinary and developmental ends. In so doing the thesis delivers an analytical framework through which other spaces of structured youth work can be read that, by remaining alert to the interweaving of the geographies of voluntary provision and participation, neither overplays adults’ nor downplays young people’s agency in their creation.

The lived reality of membership of the Boys’ Brigade between 1883 and 1933 has been somewhat neglected in the field of youth histories. Existing histories have focused on the position of founders and headquarters of youth movements, thus neglecting the experience at the local level. Our current understanding of membership of youth movements is based on an interpretation that camping was the most appealing aspect, with historians including John Springhall and Stephen Humphries asserting that this element of the programme was the greatest attraction for most Boys. However, these arguments have not adequately addressed the role of camping within the broader programme of work of youth movements, have afforded insufficient attention to the relationship between the regular sessions and camp, and have overlooked participation figures. This thesis advances our existing understanding by addressing this issue within the specific context of the urban space, providing a unique insight into the lived experience of membership of a Boys’ Brigade Company, whilst offering a comparative aspect often lost in prevailing histories. Through contemporary accounts, statistics from annual reports, oral testimonies, and newspaper articles, this thesis demonstrates that the practical application of the agenda set at the apex of the organisation was applied differently across varied spaces. Additionally, through a more thorough examination of the lived experience of camping, this thesis argues that previous histories have placed too much emphasis on camping as an attraction for young people to join a youth organisation, with the position maintained here that this activity was available to limited numbers from the 1880s to the 1930s, with more Boys experiencing life in this organisation at the weekly classes. This shows that the existing consensus approaches youth movements in broad homogenous terms and overlooks the regional variances in application of the agenda set from headquarters. This is significant to our understanding as it indicates that the urban space was a unique environment where youth movements adapted to local circumstances. Therefore, the Boys’ Brigade is presented in this thesis as a vehicle to improve our understanding of the ways young people interacted in the urban space in late nineteenth and early twentieth century Britain. It offers an indication of the lived experience of membership of a youth movement that is missing from much of the existing histories and provides a clearer indication that the application of the organisation differed across space and place, thus presenting an original contribution to the field of youth histories.

Robin Hood is the protagonist of one of the most important cycles of ballads in English literature, as well as an omnipresent figurehead in literature from time immemorial. Nevertheless, it is difficult to understand and identify the sources of the modern versions of the legend, whether literary or cinematic. The study of the texts, which are currently regarded as the earliest concerning the adventures of the Sherwood hero (namely A gest of Robyn Hode, Robin Hood and the monk, Robin Hood and the potter, Robin Hoode his death and Robin Hood and guy of Gisborne), can only help us define and understand the intrinsic characteristics of the now mythical hero; those very characteristics have turned his adventures into a legend which is both durable and mysterious. As in the case of later "bandit-heroes", such as Ned Kelly, Jesse James, Dick Turpin or Billy the kid, Robin attempts to rescue a society that is threatened by continuous infringement and injustice. As such, the character takes on a timeless dimension : he struggles for some values which are not only peculiar to his time but which can also concern all countries at different moments in their history : faithfulness, loyalty, hospitality, humility and friendship ; this is precisely what allows us to appreciate and discover the moral sense of the adventures of the hero. Moreover, the never-ending theme of the corruption of society - particularly the corruption of the judicial and political system - that is present as early as the XVth century in the medieval ballads has served to reinforce the legitimacy of the legendary hero. The ballads which have been investigated are, in this respect, the most authentic documents on the legend of Robin Hood. They draw the portrait of the hero as he would have been at the beginning of the XIVth century : an admittedly violent hero (after the fashion of all the criminals of his time), but also a legitimate bandit, rightfully fighting against coercive and unjust authorities. A central character and an oppressive force ; some chosen incidents in which the hero is always present ; the guarantor for eternal values ; this is the ground on which a potential myth was created

Through the analysis of photographs of Christchurch men, this thesis will explore and expand the historiography around masculinity in New Zealand. It will argue that how men saw themselves was informed by concepts of power and class, alongside aspects such as physical strength and ideas of manliness. Masculinity was a fluid concept; its interpretation differed across class, race and gender lines. The urban masculine identities found in Christchurch during 1880-1930 demonstrate the complexity of gender construction. They offer another view to that of a New Zealand masculinity steeped in stereotypes of rural, isolated men. Photographs are the central documents within this thesis and the growing field of visual history provides the framework for study. Photograph collections are selected from a variety of sources, including the Canterbury Museum, the Christchurch City Council archives, the Christchurch Club, Christchurch Boys' High School and my own family collection. The selection process centres on presenting collections which offer insight into a variety of settings across Christchurch, and the photographs within this thesis were chosen due to their representation of the collection they came from. Gillian Rose's methodology, which looks at the sites of production, the image, and the audience, shapes the study of the photographs. Read as documents and then situated into the broader contextual understanding of turn of the twentieth century Christchurch, these photographs allow the viewer to read the past with new eyes. This thesis offers a complementary reading of the masculine history of New Zealand. With an analysis influenced by the theoretical underpinnings of gender history, social history and visual history, the photographs show how ideas of masculinity developed in the urban setting of Christchurch. It highlights how ideas of class shaped the power relations of men, how physical settings offered different aspects of masculinity to be portrayed. The relationships between men, as well as those between men and women, demonstrate how masculine ideas were not dictated to by stereotypes, but by a range of at times contradictory imagery.

Grant’s order to resume attacks failed to spur McPherson into vigorous action. John A. Logan’s division of the Seventeenth Corps already held exposed positions near 3rd Louisiana Redan and the Great Redoubt. Ransom’s brigade had already advanced with Blair’s two brigades north of 3rd Louisiana Redan. The only other formation available to McPherson was Isaac Quinby’s reserve division. Grant ordered it to move to McClernand’s sector and help the Thirteenth Corps. Quinby arrived at 5 p. m. but McClernand separated his three brigades. John B. Sanborn’s brigade advanced on 2nd Texas Lunette but Stephen G. Burbridge assumed Sanborn was to replace his tired men and retired without orders as soon as Sanborn’s men arrived. Sanborn was unable to go any farther than had Burbridge and retired when the Confederates mounted a counterattack. George B. Boomer’s brigade advanced between 2nd Texas Lunette and Railroad Redoubt but stopped part way due to heavy fire that killed Boomer. Samuel A. Holmes’ brigade marched to the sector held by Peter J. Osterhaus’ division but Osterhaus failed to make any use of it. In short, Quinby wasted his strength in piecemeal and poorly planned actions and the fault mostly lay with McClernand.

Troops from two Thirteenth Corps divisions, Eugene A. Carr’s and Andrew J. Smith’s, attacked along Baldwin’s Ferry Road toward 2nd Texas Lunette. Two brigades advanced through a ravine and emerged onto the roadbed 150 yards from the lunette where the troops received heavy fire. The leading unit, William P. Benton’s brigade, broke apart under the pressure and fragmented, some pieces moving toward the Confederate line south of the lunette and other pieces moving farther south to join other Union formations. The second unit, Stephen G. Burbridge’s brigade, managed to maintain cohesion and advanced to the north side of the lunette. While most of Burbridge’s men managed to lodge close to the ditch fronting the work, only a part of Benton’s went that far and no one was able to scale the parapet or enter the Confederate defences. The 2nd Texas, which held the lunette, was barely able to hold on, pummelled by heavy Union artillery fire. The cotton bales lining the interior of the parapet caught fire and a Union gun was daringly dragged within a few yards of the lunette and fired through an embrasure. Nevertheless, stalemate reigned for the rest of the day along Baldwin’s Ferry Road.

On the Seventeenth Corps sector the main effort was launched by John A. Logan’s division along the Jackson Road. John E. Smith’s brigade advanced in column formation and struck the 3rd Louisiana Redan. It deployed into line before reaching the redan and all of its regiments managed to lodge at the foot of the parapet. They found it impossible to scale the slope, however, and remained there for the rest of the day. John D. Stevenson’s brigade, to the south of Smith, advanced out of a protective ravine toward the Great Redoubt. Some regiments made it to the foot of the slope but could not enter the work while others, especially the 81st Illinois, got stuck part way to the fort and suffered heavy losses. Thomas Ransom’s brigade of John McArthur’s division, north of Logan, spent the morning and the early afternoon making contact with the rest of Blair’s division to the north so the combined force might launch a coordinated attack. Meanwhile, James B. McPherson’s other division, commanded by Isaac F. Quinby, advanced to the south of Logan to demonstrate against the Confederates but did not launch an attack.

Paul Hanly Furfey chose to pursue Social Work in his doctoral studies as a way to best witness to the Christian tradition. As a graduate student, Furfey served in a parish near the university and worked for John O’Grady at Catholic Charities. At Catholic Charities, Furfey became involved in a broader debate over the extent to which Catholic youth should mix with Protestant or secular communities for recreation. Furfey disagreed with Boy Scout leaders who urged Catholics to mix indiscriminately with other children at their camps. Furfey agreed that should Catholics attend BSA camps but only under Catholic auspices. Furfey also disagreed with his Catholic counterpart, Kilian Hennrich of the Catholic Boys Brigade. Hennrich insisted that Catholic boy scouts remain completely separate from non-Catholic institutions where the children might be pulled away from the Catholic Church by Protestant proselytizers or secular indifference. Furfey argued that a compromise was possible in maintaining a Catholic ethos among Catholic boys within a broader secular camping experience. Furfey’s dissertation, later published as a book, The Gang Age, engaged the latest research in the burgeoning field of boyology. His work at the parish and Catholic Charities provided him direct contact with the field.

This chapter examines the dynamics of paramilitary loyalism and the involvement of the interviewees in operations including murder. The chapter demonstrates that the transition from Tartan gangs to paramilitaries defined the violent reputations of these organisations as the mid-1970s proved to be a bloody period in the Northern Ireland conflict

The chapter is set on April 19, 1991, during Lieutenant General John Shalikashvili’s discussion with international media following the Operation Provide Comfort commander’s meeting with Iraqi military just outside the Iraqi border customs house. The chapter overviews Shalikashvili’s reputation for putting the interests of others before himself and not politicking for career and explores to what extent he kept his ambition hidden. By examining his leadership of the 9th Infantry Division (and it’s experimental mechanized brigade) and then his subsequent seemingly “dead end” promotion (at the behest of General John “Jack” Galvin) to be General Crosbie “Butch” Saint’s deputy at US Army Europe (USARER), the chapter highlights Shalikashvili’s commitment to being a team player. It ends by discussing how the unexpected opportunity of Operation Provide Comfort once again shows the role of luck in determining success.
