Throughout the arc of a career in medicine, physicians are universally faced with the difficult decision of when to provide care for a colleague and when to refer to another physician. Gauging the magnitude of your relationship, both professionally and personally, and then weighing how to add the roles of physician and patient to your preexisting relationship is complex. We review and discuss care of family and colleagues, address ethical boundaries both firm and flexible, and explore the emotional weight of those relationships.

The importance of family’s involvement in care planning has been stressed to cater individualized, person-centered care in residential aged care. However, in reality, there are numerous structural obstacles and barriers that limit opportunities for their involvement. The aim of this article is to explore what they are. The findings based on the 12 focus groups, six groups of care professionals and six groups of family/relatives, reveal that the narrow pathway of communication between staff and families, which is hierarchically structured, one-directional, and clinically driven, enables the former to maintain and control professional boundaries between formal and informal care-giving. Such communication style delimits an opportunity for families to engage in quality discussion about care planning for their loved ones with care staff. Communication within residential aged care facilities embodies complex dynamics of care expectations and responsibilities held by care staff and families.

One of the phrases that is widely being used amid this pandemic is ‘Social Distancing’. Yes, the suggestion is good but is the phrase an appropriate one, and most importantly is it conveying a healthy message to us, social beings who can’t survive without other beings? One thing that is shocking is Physical distance can be measured and easily implemented, while 'social distance' is a measure of the distance across social boundaries. Therefore, it would be much more suitable to use the phrase “physical distancing”, since, we still (despite being isolated physically) socialize through an online platform with our loved ones and well-wishers.

This qualitative study investigated how women without partners navigate social support challenges following their breast cancer diagnoses. In-depth interviews were used for collection. Twenty women without partners discussed the supportive and unsupportive roles their relatives, peers, and colleagues played during diagnoses and treatment. Family systems theory guided the construction of interview questions. Thematic analysis uncovered the following themes: reactions to diagnosis, managing social networks, negotiating appropriate forms of social support with loved ones, and expanding social networks postdiagnosis. Participants discussed the personal challenge of unexpectedly unsupportive friends and family and how they established boundaries with these individuals. Participants also discussed needing age-relevant and cancer stage-specific breast cancer support groups. These findings are relevant to oncology care providers and therapists. Additional implications of these findings for patients, practice, and research are discussed.

Photographic postcards featuring farmer culture on the American Great Plains hold a tangled relationship to the concept of home. As both personal and tactile keepsakes to be taken home after travel and souvenirs directed to loved ones, the postcard bridges spaces of home, travel, and migration. Furthermore, postcards are significant vehicles in storytelling and community building. In the early twentieth century, a peculiar type of photographic postcard became popular in the Midwest and Great Plains regions depicting farmers with outrageously oversized crops and livestock. This article explores photographic postcards by William H. Martin (1865–1940) that equivocally glorify white farmer culture and their presumed economic productivity. It posits that through an elaborate act of photomontage, these photographic cards demonstrate the boundaries of home and convey ‘homeland’ as an ambiguous landscape.

In the article the authors give an assessment of changes in trends of the consumer behavior in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. It is shown that care for health and safety of oneself and loved ones in conditions of social distancing, forced homing and blurring the boundaries between work and home are main drivers for changing the consumer practices of Russian citizens, introducing the new creative ways of consumption and the emergence of deferred demand. The authors show changes in consumer attitudes towards home space, self-care increasing. They conclude that due to self-safety and digitalization trends in consumer behavior have changed so significantly that consumers will not completely return to their old habits after the end of the pandemic. New technologies and digitalization are making significant changes in the consumer lives and practices.

Abstract Dementia caregivers must manage the social worlds of their loved ones as well as their own. In a mixed methods study, we interviewed 50 family caregivers prior to the pandemic, twice during early phases of the pandemic, and again during the vaccine roll-out phase. Findings revealed how implementation of stay-at-home orders altered reliance on informal support as well as social ties and interactions. Using content analysis, we identified three ways in which caregivers’ managed changes in their social world: rethinking family visits (fewer people, higher quality); reinventing public spaces (church services, exercise venues); and reconsidering self-care (setting boundaries, solace in nature). Caregivers showed varying degrees of resilience in the ways they managed adverse social situations and cared for themselves. Findings reinforce the need for inclusive programs and services to help caregivers learn to maintain supportive social connections that reinforce their care decisions and routines, particularly during times of duress.

This article seeks to amplify our scholarly view of immigrant identity by centering the first-person narratives of immigrant-origin children and youth. Our theoretical and methodological framework centers on testimonio—a narrative practice popularized in Latin American social movements in which an individual recounts a lived experience that is intended to be representative of a collective struggle. Our goal is to foreground first-person narratives of childhood as told by immigrant-origin children and youth in order to gain insight into what they believe we should know about them. We argue for the power of testimonio to communicate both extraordinary hardship and everyday experiences and that—through this storytelling—immigrant-origin children and youth also express imagined futures for themselves and their loved ones. Through our analysis of ethnographic recordings of testimonio shared by Latin American immigrant children and multimedia testimonios created by immigrant-origin adolescents with roots in the Caribbean and West Africa, we gain a fuller understanding of immigrant subjectivities and push the boundaries of “the immigrant experience” still prevalent in mainstream discussions today.

This study focuses on smoking-cessation strategies for United States (US) Vietnamese individuals, a group with high smoking rates, particularly those with limited English proficiency (LEP). The researchers conducted 16 in-depth interviews with a diverse group of participants, including healthcare professionals, community leaders, and former tobacco users. Data were analyzed using the Phase-Based Model of smoking cessation, resulting in several helpful strategies across the four phases: Motivation, Preparation, Cessation, and Maintenance. Prominent advice for the Motivation Phase included having a strong determination to quit and a reason why, such as protecting loved ones. For the Preparation and Cessation Phases, participants recommended healthy coping mechanisms, avoiding triggers, changing habits, and gradually reducing the number of cigarettes smoked. In the Maintenance Phase, strategies included regular exercise and setting boundaries with other people who smoke. Participants also stressed the importance of social support throughout all four phases. These findings have implications for healthcare providers working with US Vietnamese who smoke, especially those with LEP. By understanding the unique challenges this group faces in accessing smoking-cessation resources, providers can offer tailored support and guidance. Ultimately, this study provides useful strategies for helping US Vietnamese quit smoking, improving their health outcomes and quality of life.

The study of diagnostic methods and the development of methods for the treatment of personality disorders is a significant scientific task. Personality disorders, including borderline personality disorder, characterized by hypertrophied emotions and a violation of self-identification, are painful for both patients and their loved ones. The article analyzes the results of a number of studies and observations in the field of experience of the treatment of borderline personality disorder. Cognitive and behavioral responses to therapy of the patients with borderline personality disorder are considered, as well as the features of building a therapeutic alliance, the formation of epistemological trust of the patient to the therapist, resistance to therapy and early dropout. Based on the analysis of a number of studies, it was found that patients with borderline personality disorder are in dire need of psychotherapy, believe that the therapist is the person who can solve all their problems, often transfer responsibility for their condition on him, forming a kind of child–parent relationship. Because of this, patients with borderline personality disorder often violate the therapist's personal boundaries, demanding his availability at any time. Such patients may perceive therapy as the only safe environment. At the same time, due to the fear of rejection, the formation of a therapeutic alliance takes a long time.

With a rise in overdose deaths in the United States, opioid awareness has come in a variety of ways. One of these, as reporters suggest, is obituary writing. Obituaries are considered in news media as offering “brutally frank” depictions of addiction that “chronicle the toll of heroin.” Moreover, obituary sharing by parents and loved ones has increasingly taken place on digital platforms, memorial websites expanding the visibility of overdose death while facilitating the building of virtual grief communities. Not solely commemorating individual loss, obituaries thus contain symbolic power—they reflect dominant social values and shape collective memory. As such, overdose obituaries inform how opioid crisis is framed, represented, and addressed. From a qualitative content analysis of 533 opioid-related U.S. obituaries published on Legacy.com and ObitTree.com , I find that while obituaries reduce stigma associated with drug use, addiction, and overdose, they primarily tell white tales of addiction. In affording a white racial framing of drug addiction, obituary writing corresponds with a larger whitewashing of the opioid crisis while implicitly constructing symbolic boundaries between those memorialized, who are predominantly white and middle-class, and those who are deemed as raced and classed Others. Such storytelling, particularly when popularized in news media and made visible on digital platforms, contributes to ongoing systemic inequality in the prevailing drug war.

Since the beginning of the 21st century, due to the intensification of globalization, the boundaries of transnational influence have significantly expanded, and the pace of dynamic development has increased for individual states and geopolitical structures. It has become a new challenge to the system of order and a threat to security. The migration and security connection is reflected in public opinion, political struggles, and the adoption of state decisions. For a long time, it did not consider migration a significant factor affecting security, as it viewed security concepts as national security or limited to geopolitical and military threats. However, the national security crisis is related to internal conflicts or interventions and large-scale human rights violations that lead to migration. Migration crises arise unexpectedly but are associated with exceptionally adverse events, circumstances, or disasters that force people to leave their places of residence suddenly and en masse to save themselves and their loved ones, resettling in safe territories, other regions, or abroad. The full-scale invasion of Russia into Ukraine on February 24, 2022, became a geopolitical catastrophe and led to a migration crisis in the territories of most European states. It became a comprehensive threat to the Ukrainian state, with the loss of human capital being the most harmful factor. ABSTRACT This article argues that the rabbinic framework of Eruvin as a conceptual system simultaneously undermines rigid boundaries and creates new, more fluid ones, modeling a mode of halakhah that is “queer” and shares notable features with queer theory. The article examines three areas of interaction between Eruvin and queer theory: the challenge that both Eruvin and queer theory offer to an understanding of public and private as a rigid binary; the ways that texts in Hilchot Eruvin challenge us to move beyond the primacy of the nuclear family unit; and the idea that Eruvin, in its nuancing of “entry,” can model a sexuality beyond simply penetrative intercourse. This article develops greater understanding of the effects and contributions of the Rabbinic project of Hilchot Eruvin while simultaneously modeling a new way of thinking about queerness and halakhah: as a conversation in which queerness is generative rather than problematic.

The tradition of marking the places of death in road accidents is now widespread on all continents and in most countries, including Russia. Roadside monuments, which are installed at the same time, are of two types: some correspond to monuments in cemeteries, others do not. Sometimes it is enough for loved ones only to mark the place of death itself. Then a monument is erected, completely or partially devoid of information about the deceased. This phenomenon is called anonymization of the place of death. But for many, it is not the place itself that is important, but the memory of the deceased person. In this case, the monument contains the most detailed information about the deceased, so personalization and individualization are created. It can be embodied with the help of the design features of the monument, photographs or images of the deceased, personal information, epitaphs and objects that are placed on or near the monuments. The article presents data on the uniqueness of personalization and anonymization, obtained as a result of a survey of routes A 151, P 241, P178. It was out that ompletely anonymous memorial signs make up 19% of all sings on the highway P 241, reach – 33% on the highway A 151 and 50% on the highway P 178. It can be assumed that a higher degree of anonymization on the A 151 and P 178 highway is due to special types of memorial signs (a flowerpot on the P 178 highway, a gazebo and a fence without a sign on the A 151 highway), as well as a large number of old metal signs that have lost photos, plates with information about the deceased. There are no clear boundaries between anonymization and personalization, there is a large number of transitional phenomena that can be simultaneously defined as both partial personalization and partial anonymization.

Recent interpretations of Propertius 4.2 see in Vertumnus' shifting costumes a programmatic statement about the new poetics of Propertius' fourth book of elegy. The statue's ability to assume and shed identities with a simple wardrobe change mirrors the poet's desire to challenge the traditional generic boundaries of love elegy, dressing it up now in Roman themes, now in amatory ones. No doubt this is so. And yet, more generally, recent criticism finds elegy as a genre hospitable to interpretations that focus on issues of gender and identity. Indeed, as Marilyn Skinner has succinctly summarised, ‘texts of the late first century BCE are notorious for the phenomenon of “gender dissonance”…boundaries between ‘male’ and ‘female’ as essential categories of psychosexual identity fluctuate wildly and eventually break down.’ Propertius' fourth and final poetic collection provides fertile territory for an interrogation of gender, since it both highlights female voices—for example Arethusa, Cynthia or Cornelia—and explores moments of transvestism—for example Vertumnus and Hercules. I argue that when Propertius cloaks the speaking statue, Vertumnus, alternately in ‘feminine’ and ‘masculine’ attributes, he lays bare not simply poetics, but, further, he questions the very constitution of gender. In other words, Propertius probes the relationship between self-representation and identity and reveals that both are fluid and, more surprisingly perhaps, that the former gives rise to the latter.

A map is a peculiar kind of visual text. It seems a mere instrument of utility, showing us where to go and how to put things in place. Invisible ingredients, however, render every map a Pandora's box. Emotions are undoubtedly the most potent of all of the invisible elements in maps. The cartographic passions that make the headlines may be national ones, but in cities, towns, and villages, people have strong feelings about local maps. Street gangs, real estate developers, insurance companies, zoning boards, planners, and electorates invest maps with local politics. Landowners love their property lines. Universities map their campus identity. The Association for Asian Studies (AAS) signifies itself succinctly in its logo, a map of Asia. Such territorial attachments and many others have striking similarities: they infuse boundaries with iconic significance, tinged with feelings of security, belonging, possessiveness, enclosure, entitlement, and exclusion.

The traditional reading of Julia de Burgos’s (1914–1953) poem “Río Grande de Loíza” positions the river as a male lover. An ecofeminist reading yields a very different reading and raises other questions about the gendered and sexual message circulating within the poem. In my reading, the river becomes a fluid, lyrical mirror reflecting the poet’s quest for transnational and transsexual freedom unbound by female corporeality. Burgos invokes the river as a non-human Other interlocutor in order to deconstruct both the geographic and political boundaries imposed by US colonial hegemony and the sexual ones foisted by patriarchal-oriented Puerto Rican nationalists who viewed sexuality as heteronormative. By the 1930s, landscapes had been appropriated as symbols of the fatherland and a distinct Puerto Rican identity. Burgos’s language establishes instead a fluvial proto-feminist discourse of empowerment by imagining multiple sites of corporeal pleasure that transcend national barriers and offers alternative poetic fluid sexualities.

Jeanette Winterson’s Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit (1985) taps into the increasing popular interest for exploring the ways in which gender and sexual identities are constructed in the mainstream British culture. Often been considered an autobiographical and a bildungsroman, this book has successfully dealt with the protagonist’s self-development from infancy to adulthood and her search for individuality through a series of formative experiences. These experiences, however, encapsulates her struggle against—the oppression of religion of the asphyxiating society where she lives, in her sexual initiation, in her subsequent isolation, and finally in her success to move away from oppression to freedom and independence. Thus this research paper is an attempt to excavate how Winterson has challenged the prescribed set of attitudes of a society (especially the religious ones) towards sexuality through the experiences of a character who experiences her lesbian identity within a closed society that rejects same-sex love and tendencies. Moreover, this paper also aims to redirect our focus towards the breaking down of traditional clear-cut boundaries with respect to the artificial construction of gender and identity.

Aim/Purpose: This descriptive study examines indicators of well-being and sources of emotional connection for social work doctoral students at American institutions during the COVID-19 pandemic, including symptoms of depression, anxiety, work-related burnout, emotional connection to others, and changes in child care among parent respondents. This study also explores if particular groups of doctoral students experience heightened risks to well-being during the pandemic. Background: Social isolation strategies associated with the COVID-19 pandemic present challenges for doctoral student well-being, mental health, professional relationships, and degree persistence. Of particular concern is the potentially disproportionate impact the pandemic may have on the well-being of students who already face additional barriers to degree completion, such as parents and caregivers, as well as those who face obstacles associated with structural oppression, including persons of color, women, and sexual minority (SM) students. Methodology: Baseline data was used from a longitudinal survey study conducted by the authors on social work doctoral student well-being during the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants (N = 297) were recruited through the Group for the Advancement of Doctoral Education in Social Work’s (GADE’s) publicly available list of 89 member institutions in the United States. The majority of respondents identified as women (80.1%), 35% of the sample identified as a person of color and/or non-White race, 30% identified as a sexual minority, and 32% were parents of children under 18 years of age. Contribution: This study contributes to the larger body of literature on factors associated with risk, resilience, and well-being among doctoral students, and it offers a specific exploration of these factors within the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. This study deepens our understanding of social work doctoral students in particular, who have higher rates of doctoral enrollment by women and persons of color than many other academic disciplines. Findings: Emotional connection to loved ones was significantly correlated with lower levels of depressive symptoms, anxiety symptoms, and work-related burnout. Outcomes varied by race, with Black and Asian respondents indicating higher levels of emotional connection to loved ones as compared to White respondents, and Black respondents indicating lower levels of anxiety and depression compared to White respondents. SM respondents indicated significantly lower levels of emotional connection and higher levels of depression and anxiety, as compared to heterosexual respondents. Parents reported receiving substantially less child care assistance than they were before the pandemic, but also reported lower levels of anxiety, depression, and work-related burnout compared to childless respondents. Recommendations for Practitioners: Recommendations for doctoral program directors and chairs include implementing a purposive communication strategy, faculty modeling self-care and boundaries, creating opportunities for connection, scheduling value-added activities driven by student interest and needs, approaching student needs and plans of study with flexibility, and creating virtual affinity groups to help students connect with those facing similar challenges. Recommendation for Researchers: Outcome evaluation studies of doctoral program initiatives and policies to promote student well-being--both during and in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic-- is warranted. Impact on Society: The COVID-19 pandemic presents complex financial, interpersonal, and programmatic challenges for doctoral faculty and program directors, many of which affect the well-being and mental health of their students. Findings and recommendations from this study may be used to address the needs of doctoral students and support their path to doctoral degree completion. Future Research: Future studies should include measures that tap a broader range of indicators of depression, anxiety, and emotional connection, and additional domains of well-being. Multivariate analyses would permit predictive conclusions, and follow-up qualitative analyses would offer deeper insights into doctoral students’ well-being, coping skills, and experiences within the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Purpose. The article analyses the features of the erotic narrative of I. A. Bunin in his cycle Dark Alleys, which became a phenomenon in Russian classical literature – a kind of artistic “encyclopedia of love”, written in defiance of ethical and ideological prohibitions.Results. Erotica in this cycle is presented in descriptions of the physiology of sex and sexual communication. The research examines 209 contexts extracted from the cycle. They describe actions of a sexual nature, including violent or commercial ones, human physiology and anatomy (59 contexts), which determine human sexual behavior. The writer widely uses various methods of euphemization of erotic meanings: synonymous replacements, generalization techniques, allusion, ellipsis, silence. Quantitative data show that the main speech strategy in the Bunin cycle is silence, which is implemented in a whole series of stylistic tropes and figures. I. A. Bunin uses a diverse arsenal of units of the lexical, lexico-morphological and syntactic levels. Euphemisms appear in areas of maximum erotic tension. With their help, the author reduces the “emotionogenicity” of erotica in accordance with his own ideas about the boundaries of what is acceptable and permissible.Conclusion. In the vertical context of Russian culture, I. Bunin’s erotic narrative, his restraint and precision in the choice of linguistic means, the deliberate exclusion of naturalism and reduced style serve to preserve harmony in the triad “LOVE – PASSION – SEX”. The Bunin language of Dark Alleys can be considered a classic standard of the sacrament of physical love, which the writers of the 20th century were guided by, accepting or rejecting it.

The article reveals the degree of influence of the Great Terror policy on the formation of behavioral practices in the scientific, pedagogical, and student environment of the Kazan State Pedagogical Institute (KSPI). The author analyzes letters addressed to the Central Committee of the All-Union Communist Party of Bolsheviks and party organizations of the KSPI. The letters, dated April 1938, were written by Khairi Gimadi, one of the leading historians of the TASSR, who stood at the origins of the Soviet historiography of the national republic. The article is to show the source studies significance of epistolary heritage in study of the Soviet humanities development in the context of ideological campaigns. Besides principles of historicism, objectivity, and integrated approach, the study uses hermeneutic method to interpret the texts content, taking into account the author’s age, marital and social status, his attitude to power, and also state’s ideological pressure on society. Having survived the days of repression, Kh. Gimadi became a candidate of historical sciences, senior researcher at the Academy of Sciences of the USSR with a degree in history of Tatarstan. He was engaged in research activities until his death in 1961. After his death, his wife carefully collected notes that he had torn, grouped them according to their content, and filed into two separate notebooks. One of these contains Kh. Gimadi's letters of application. They reflect a form of corporate ethics developed during the Great Terror and relationship between teachers and students. The study shows politically unstable living conditions of the humanitarian intelligentsia, enduring fear for the fate of loved ones. In order to survive, Soviet people often had to overstep moral boundaries and comply with the system. This inevitably led to the destruction of traditional foundations of the society and the breakdown of social ties. This led to the false notion that the only source of justice was the party. This is the reason why H. Gimadi's letters of application were written. The significance of these historical documents lies in the fact that, in addition to highlighting moral and political atmosphere in the days of mass repression, they make it possible to understand the reason behind conciliatory behavior and even complicity in mass arrests. The presented study may be of interest to specialists studying the development of Soviet historical science in the national republics and everyday life in the era of Stalinism.

Abstract The death of a loved one is a challenging but also normative occurrence in later life (e.g., Thomson et al, 2018). Experiencing the death of others typically increases with age, so personal reaction to loss becomes an ongoing process (Harrop et al., 2016). When adults lose someone, the deceased person is often ‘gone but not forgotten.’ That is, they are remembered over time (Klass & Steffen, 2017). The way one remembers their lost loved one’s life and their death (e.g., Mroz et al., 2019) may influence post-loss emotional adjustment and personal views. This symposium brings together Psychology and Sociology researchers with data from Germany, the US, and China whose work elucidates the complex relation between loss and memory: we identify how remembering lost loved ones relates to both adaptive and difficult outcomes. In this symposium, Wolf et al. examine beneficial and harmful ways of using autobiographical memories after a personal loss. Mroz and Bluck identify how grief responses in older adult widows lead to functional use of memories from the very end of the spouse’s life. Fu and Idler focus on the directive function of autobiographical memory, examining how memory for end-of-life experience with loved ones influences current choices for aggressive end-of-life care. Bolkan and Weaver examine how early life experiences with loss influence later personal views and advance care planning. Our Discussant, Debby Carr, integrates these talks to elucidate how remembering loss experiences relate to not only current grief, but also to people’s preparations for the future.

Adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer patients report a need for support to stay in contact with loved ones after diagnosis. In response to this the Dutch AYA ‘Young & Cancer’ Care Network co-created the mobile application ‘AYA Match’. This study describes the cocreational process, the characteristics of the users and their expectations regarding the app. 121 AYA cancer patients and 37 loved ones completed a questionnaire. 68.6% of the loved ones reported ‘staying in contact’ and ‘finding out about the needs and wishes of ‘their AYA’ during this time’ as the main reasons for downloading the application. 41.1% of the AYA cancer patients expected the app to help them communicate to their loved ones what they do or don’t want and need. 60% of the loved ones indicated that they would like to use the application to offer help to ‘their AYA’ with their daily tasks. Patients and their loved ones have similar expectations when it comes to ‘normalizing’ contact, increasing empathy and mutual understanding about needs and emotions. The AYA Match app could be an adequate answer to the issues experienced regarding contact, support and mutual understanding.

People are frequently at a loss for the best way to begin a discussion about end-of-life concerns with loved ones and health care providers, and are also unsure of the topics they should cover. Nonetheless, conversations about end-of-life care and advance directives can help ensure that the person’s wishes are honored. These measures also eliminate much of the difficult decision-making that loved ones typically face at the time of their loved ones’ passing. This 5-page fact sheet, which is part of a series entitled The Art of Goodbye: End of Life Education series, discusses the barriers to discussing the end of life and the process of communication with loved ones and health care providers. While there is an evolving literature on the benefits of texting and patient-centered technologies, texting initiatives have not focused on family members. We sought to identify patients’ family members’ perspectives on facilitators and barriers to using 1 digital texting innovation to promote family-centered care during patients’ hospitalizations. This qualitative study was conducted at a tertiary care center in Houston, consisting of 7 hospitals (1 academic hospital and 6 community hospitals), involving analyzation of 3137 comments from family members who used the digital texting technology. Thematic analysis methods were used. The data analysis for loved ones’ feedback resulted in 4 themes as facilitators: (1) inpatient text messaging keeps loved ones updated and connected (n = 611); (2) inpatient text messaging allows for stronger continuity of communication (n = 69); (3) messaging promotes a sense of staff compassion and service (n = 245); and (4) messaging reduces phone calls (n = 65). The data analysis resulted in 4 themes as barriers to text messaging helpfulness: (1) messages could feel generic (n = 31); (2) inpatient texting was not needed if all loved ones were regularly at bedside (n = 6); (3) messages could have a perceived delay (n = 37); and (4) security features could impact convenience (n = 29). Our findings indicate that family members and loved ones value inpatient text messages, not only for the information the messages provide, but also because the act of writing text messages and preparing loved ones shows inclusiveness, compassion, and family-centered care.

With the development of information technology and the internet, social media has replaced real social relations with virtual ones. However, virtual social relations carry risks, one of which is Cyberstalking (Rohman & Sugeng 2022) Cyberstalking is a dangerous cybercrime and targets many people, communities, and organizations (Baer, 2020) As a crime, cyberstalking fulfills the elements of a criminal act which results in disruption of social order (Wall, 2007). Thus, cyberstalking is contrary to Islamic principles because it creates an insecure atmosphere. This research is library research using library materials in the form of books, journals, magazines, and other library sources as study material (Sukmadinata, 2010). Researchers will use a descriptive qualitative approach. Cyberstalking is a term used to describe various behaviors that involve repeated threats and/or harassment using electronic mail or other computer-based communications that will make people afraid or concerned for their safety (Gopalan, R.T. 2020). In Islam, these actions are prohibited acts because they contain elements of harassment, threats, harassment, or coercion. In interacting, Islam puts forward the concept of "rahmatan lil alamin" which means being a source of mercy and benefit for all creation (Rouzi, K.S., Suud, F.M., & Chaer, M.T. 2021), emphasizing values such as tolerance, discipline, social care, responsibility answer, and love peace (Nasir, M.S., & Khalilurrahman 2022). These values can be applied to the concept of privacy, encouraging individuals to respect the boundaries and personal space of others. The Qur'an teaches that stalking and harassment are prohibited by Allah, and humans need to be careful when engaging in such activities. In conclusion, cyberstalking is a form of harassment that violates Islamic principles and can cause harm to individuals and society.

Background: Lung volume reduction surgery (LVRS), a reduction in damaged lung tissue in end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, is a breakthrough surgical procedure requiring months of rigorous screening, testing, and conditioning. Engaging in this process is prolonged and challenging with no research found exploring patients and loved ones’ experiences through this demanding process. Objective: The purpose was to examine the experience of LVRS for patients and loved ones as they encounter the complex preparation required prior to, during, and throughout the extended convalescence following surgery. Methods: A mixed-methods approach was used, combining health outcomes with interview data. Participants and loved ones were purposefully selected, invited, and consented during the perioperative phase of LVRS. Quantitative data were obtained via chart review, while qualitative data were gathered through a 2-stage interview process, preoperatively and postoperatively. Qualitative data were analyzed using naturalistic inquiry approaches. Results: Patients and loved ones described difficulties of living with illness during the preoperative phase, and expressed relief and joy for an improved quality of life afterward. The overarching theme uncovered was hope. Preoperatively, hope was coupled with anxiety about the upcoming surgery and potential outcomes, whereas the hope expressed after surgery focused on the future, in particular, a shared future. Statistically significant differences were found in the quality of life measures. Conclusion: For both patients and loved ones, LVRS is filled with hope for a more expansive future. Although that future is unclear prior to surgery, clarification and a new normal signals hope for a shared future following LVRS.

Exposure to mass trauma may bring about increased sensitivity to new or ongoing stressors. It is unclear whether sensitivity to stress associated with ethnic minority/immigrant status may be affected by severe exposure to mass trauma. We examined whether the loss of loved ones or home due to a disaster is associated with more persistent disaster-related distress in ethnic minorities compared with Dutch natives in the Netherlands. In residents affected by a fireworks disaster ( N = 1029), we assessed disaster-related distress after 3 weeks, 18 months, and 4 years. The effects of loss of loved ones or home and ethnic minority/immigrant status on distress were analyzed using latent growth modeling. After controlling for age, gender, education, employment, and post-disaster stressful life events, the loss of loved ones was associated with more persistent disaster-related distress in ethnic minorities compared with natives at 18 months, and the loss of home was associated with more persistent disaster-related distress in ethnic minorities compared with natives between 18 months and 4 years. Our results suggest that the loss of loved ones may increase sensitivity to stress associated with ethnic minority/immigrant status during the early phase of adaptation to a disaster. Loss of home may lead to further resource loss and thereby increase sensitivity to stress associated with ethnic minority/immigrant status in the long term. Efforts to prevent stress-related psychopathology following mass trauma should specifically target ethnic minority groups, notably refugees and asylum seekers, who often experienced multiple losses of loved ones as well as their homes.

e18568 Background: The burden of cancer has largely focused on the patient. However, caregivers also experience considerable burden. The study's aim was to use social media posts to better understand the emotional journey of caregivers who provide care for patients with leukemia from their own perspective. Methods: Publicly available social media posts (in English) mentioning chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), and acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) from blogs, discussion boards, and Facebook were collected and linguistically analyzed. Results: A total of 145 social media posts by CML caregivers, 149 posts by CLL caregivers, and 65 posts by APL caregivers were analyzed. Common themes emerged among CML, CLL, and APL caregivers as they journeyed from pre-diagnosis, to diagnosis, and to survivorship alongside their loved ones. At the pre-diagnosis phase, caregivers expressed uneasiness or worry about the symptoms their loved ones were experiencing. Additionally, caregivers were often frustrated with doctors because they felt that their loved ones’ symptoms were ignored, which led to a delay in diagnosis. Once the diagnosis was confirmed, caregivers were shocked and scared. Further, caregivers were desperate for information on the disease and what the future would hold. During the survivorship phase of the journey, an amalgam of complex positive and negative emotions emerged among caregivers. Caregivers can become obsessed with finding ways to treat their loved ones, including use of alternative medicine. Caregivers experienced both positive (a more “enriched relationship”) and negative (felt alone or pushed away) relationship changes. Many caregivers were proud of their loved ones’ remission and felt triumphant. Caregivers felt a sense of gratitude toward doctors, friends, family, and social media sites for their support. Conclusions: Caregivers of CML, CLL, and APL patients experience a gamut of emotions at every stage of the disease. Additionally, the relationship between caregivers and loved ones can be negatively affected. Findings suggest that relationship counseling and social support groups could potentially relieve some caregiver burden.

AbstractIris Murdoch believes that unselfing is required for virtue, as it takes us out of our egoistic preoccupations, and connects us to the Good in the world. Love is a form of unselfing, illustrating how close attention to another, and the way they really are, again, takes us out of a narrow focus on the self. Though this view of love runs counter to a view that those in love often overlook flaws in their loved ones, or at least down-play them, I argue that it is compatible with Murdoch's view that love can overlook some flaws, ones that do not speak to the loved one's true self. Unselfing requires that we don't engage in selfish delusion, but a softer view of our loved ones is permitted.

RationaleAdvance care planning (ACP) is uncommon in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).ObjectivesTo assess whether a nurse-led ACP-intervention can improve quality of patient-physician end-of-life care communication in patients with COPD. Furthermore, the influence of an ACP-intervention on symptoms of anxiety and depression in patients and loved ones was studied. Finally, quality of death and dying was assessed in patients who died during 2-year follow-up.MethodsA multicentre cluster randomised-controlled trial in patients with advanced COPD was performed. The intervention group received an 1.5 hours structured nurse-led ACP-session. Outcomes were: quality of patient-physician end-of-life care communication, prevalence of ACP-discussions 6 months after baseline, symptoms of anxiety and depression in patients and loved ones and quality of death and dying.Results165 patients were enrolled (89 intervention; 76 control). The improvement of quality of patient-physician end-of-life care communication was significantly higher in the intervention group compared with the control group (p<0.001). The ACP-intervention was significantly associated with the occurrence of an ACP-discussion with physicians within 6 months (p=0.003). At follow-up, symptoms of anxiety were significantly lower in loved ones in the intervention group compared with the control group (p=0.02). Symptoms of anxiety in patients and symptoms of depression in both patients and loved ones were comparable at follow-up (p>0.05). The quality of death and dying was comparable between both groups (p=0.17).ConclusionOne nurse-led ACP-intervention session improves patient-physician end-of-life care communication without causing psychosocial distress in both patients and loved ones.

Creating and visiting Web memorials represent new opportunities for post-death ritual. A content analysis was conducted on a sample of 244 of the memorials found on the largest Web Cemetery: Virtual Memorial Gardens (catless.ncl.ac.uk/Obituary/memorial.html). Analyses revealed that memorials were written, in descending order of prevalence, by children (33%), friends (15%), grandchildren (11%), parents (10%), siblings (8%), spouses (4%), and various other family members. This pattern favoring younger authors may reflect the newness of this venue and facility with computer technology. The content of such memorials often contained reference to missing the deceased, rarely spoke of the cause of death, or made mention of God or religion. Memorials were more likely to be written to the deceased (e.g., in the form of a letter) rather than about or for the deceased (e.g., eulogy/obituary or tribute). Parents, family groups, and other relatives more frequently made religious references in their memorials than did other authors. In addition to the Web as a novel, untapped data source, these memorials offer intriguing opportunities for theoretical refinement (i.e., the ongoing connection between the bereaved and the deceased).

Patient autonomy is one of the central values in medical ethics. It is generally understood as recognition of patients' rights as free individuals answerable only to themselves. This emphasis on the individual leaves open the question of the position of the patients' ‘loved ones’, that is of families and significant others. The authors examine this question in three areas of law and medical ethics. Organ donation offers an example of preference given by medical ethics to family views, notwithstanding an expressed wish of the deceased to donate, and the legal position protecting such a request. Decisions concerning the treatment of incompetent patients illustrate consideration for the family in medical ethics, but hesitations in both law and ethics in accepting family views once expressed. And the tension between the interests of patients and family members over the access to genetic information usually results in respecting the patient's right to confidentiality. This individualistic perception of autonomy, as adopted by medical law, overlooks the patient's relationships with others and is too narrow to face the complexities of human lives.
