Texto completo da fonteEvery day an invisible war for data takes place between e-commerce websites and web scrapers. E-commerce websites own the data at the heart of the conflict and would like to provide it only to genuine users. Web scrapers aim to have illimited and continuous access to the above-mentioned data to capitalize on it. To achieve this goal, scrapers send large amounts of requests to e-commerce websites, causing them financial problems. This led the security industry to engage in an arms race against scrapers to create better systems to detect and mitigate their requests. At present, the battle continues, but scrapers appear to have the upper hand, thanks to the usage of Residential IP Proxies (RESIPs). In this thesis, we aim to shift the balance by introducing novel detection and mitigation techniques that overcome the limitations of current state-of-the-art methods. We propose a deceptive mitigation technique that lures scrapers into believing they have obtained their target data while they receive modified information. We present two new detection techniques based on network measurements that identify scraping requests proxied through RESIPs. Thanks to an ongoing collaboration with Amadeus IT Group, we validate our results on real-world operational data. Being aware that scrapers will not stop looking for new ways to avoid detection and mitigation, this thesis provides additional contributions that can help in building the next defensive weapons for fighting scrapers. We propose a comprehensive characterization of RESIPs, the strongest weapon currently at the disposal of scrapers. Moreover, we investigate the possibility of acquiring threat intelligence on the scrapers by geolocating them when they send requests through a RESIP

Texto completo da fonteNowadays, a wide range of devices can browse the web, ranging from smartphones, desktop computers, to connected TVs. To increase their browsing experience, users also customize settings in their browser, such as displaying the bookmark bar or their preferred languages. Customization and the diversity of devices are at the root of browser fingerprinting. Indeed, to manage this diversity, websites can access attributes about the device using JavaScript APIs, without asking for user consent. The combination of such attributes is called a browser fingerprint and has been shown to be highly unique, making of fingerprinting a suitable tracking technique. Its stateless nature makes it also suitable for enhancing authentication or detecting bots. In this thesis, I report three contributions to the browser fingerprinting field:1. I collect 122K fingerprints from 2,346 browsers and study their stability over more than 2 years. I show that, despite frequent changes in the fingerprints, a significant fraction of browsers can be tracked over a long period of time;2. I design a test suite to evaluate fingerprinting countermeasures. I apply our test suite to 7 countermeasures, some of them claiming to generate consistent fingerprints, and show that all of them can be identified, which can make their users more identifiable;3. I explore the use of browser fingerprinting for crawler detection. I measure its use in the wild, as well as the main detection techniques. Since fingerprints are collected on the client-side, I also evaluate its resilience against an adversarial crawler developer that tries to modify its crawler fingerprints to bypass security checks

Texto completo da fonteCombinatorial optimization concerns the solving of problems for which the variables take discrete values and on which constraints apply. The set of variables and constraints form the model of the problem. A lot of industrial problems can be represented in this form. A solver is a software that takes as input a model and produces a solution. Constraint programming (CP) is one of the algorithmic techniques that can be used within a solver. In this master’s thesis, we develop a new solver. The primary objective is to rely on an easily modifiable solver in order to add new resolution approaches developed by researchers. Moreover, in order to demonstrate the utility of the solver, we develop an approach using that solver in order to generate alternative loading patterns for a kiln in the forest industry. Finally, in this master’s thesis, we present a new technique for solving some CP problems. The filtering algorithms are triggered according to events that occur when solving the problem. We propose a new event that allows to perform a lazy filtering of the variables. We demonstrate, on a classical combinatorial optimization problem (Balanced Incomplete Block Design), that it gives a better performance while maintaining the same level of filtering when compared with classical events.

Texto completo da fonteThe first objective of this work is to characterize the properties of jack pine and white spruce and develop a lumber volume correction factor due to stem shape for both species. The purpose of this section is to more precisely predict lumber volume from forest inventory data. The second objective is to model the presence of knots and evaluate their impact on lumber yield using Optitek, a sawing simulation software. To achieve this goal, a new software had to be developed in order to extract CT image information and make it compatible with the Optitek software. Hence, the second objective is simulate lumber sawing while taking into account the knot dimension and location. The trees come from a Nelder (1962) type plantation of white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss) and jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.). This type of plantation is characterized by a circular shape which makes the stand density vary from the center to the periphery of the circle. This site makes possible the study of two different species growing in similar conditions. Several field data were analyzed such as diameter at breast height (DBH), curvature, taper, total tree length, live crown size. First, the results show that tree characteristics are strongly influenced by the stand density. Indeed, DBH, total height, taper, length and width of the live crown, diameter of the five largest branches dead and alive generally increased with greater distance between the trees, both for jack pine and white spruce. The results obtained with the simulation using the knot information gave a lumber sawing volume and value significantly higher. Both jack pine and white spruce have produced more No.2 & better pieces when knots have been considered in the sawing simulations (15% for white spruce and 40% for jack pine). As for lumber value, the increase varied from 9.5% to 15.1% for white spruce and 15.2% to 23.0% for jack pine. Again, the larger jack pine knot size could explain this greater potential for improvement.

Texto completo da fonteTo reduce the environmental impact of a building, integration of life cycle assessment (LCA) during design phase can follow two approaches: use of a simplified tool, such as Athena, by construction professionals, or use of a more complex tool, such as SimaPro, in collaboration with an LCA analyst. The objective of the project is to evaluate the strengths and limitations of these tools when analysing innovative timber buildings in Canada. The results are based on a case study: a six-storey office building with glulam structure that was outside prescriptive standard at time of construction. For Athena, possible improvements include more flexibility, including a better control over the maintenance cycles of materials, as well as more information regarding the uncertainty of the results. SimaPro offers more flexibility and transparency. However, more processes representing building materials in the Canadian context would be necessary.

Texto completo da fonteConservation biology is a rapidly expanding field of research due to the accelerating loss of global biodiversity. To better understand the processes and threats to the persistence of small populations and the effects of anthropogenic factors on biodiversity, genetic approaches are frequently used in conservation. Genetic analyzes can, for example, inform us about long-term trends, population diversity and reproductive strategies of a species. The wood turtle (Glyptemys insculpta) is a species endemic to North America that is endangered according to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. As part of my thesis, my objective was to characterize the genetic diversity of this threatened species in Canada. In order to better understand the impact of reproductive strategy and landscape structure on population diversity, I analyzed the genetics of wood turtle populations at several spatial and temporal scales. First, parentage relationships were reconstructed in a population of wood turtles to estimate the frequency of multiple and repeated paternity. The results of my work suggest that sperm storage in females and multiple reproduction with the same partners for more than one breeding season could explain these phenomena. These reproduction strategies could in this case be induced by the low density of the study population, or by fidelity to the overwintering site where the majority of copulation events take place. Subsequently, I assessed the genetic diversity of wood turtle populations. I wanted to understand the effects of the landscape configuration and geographic dispersion events on the diversity of populations. Using a landscape genetics approach, my analyzes show that the division of populations by watershed explains a large fraction of the genetic diversity between populations. These results also confirm that watersheds represent management units conducive to the protection of wood turtle populations. Finally, network analysis was used to better understand the gene flow dynamics among populations located on the north and south shores of the St. Lawrence River. More specifically, the north shore is characterized by a robust network of isolated populations, whereas the populations on the south shore present more of a metapopulation structure. Using population graphs, hypothetical scenarios were compared to explore the node selection process using the BRIDES algorithm. The results of these analyzes made it possible to point out specific populations of wood turtles, considering their importance for network connectivity. This could have not been predicted by using genetic diversity and distinctiveness estimates, node-based metrics, and node removal analysis for these populations. Thanks to genetics, this thesis brings new knowledge on the wood turtle, the reproductive strategies of both sexes, the gene flow, the connectivity and the influence of the hydrographic network on population diversity. These results allow us to have a better understanding of the processes affecting the genetic diversity of this species in order to better protect it. All analyses performed for this thesis are directly applicable to other long-lived species with overlapping generations.
