Review of the book: Stolyarov Yu. N. Rubakin regained / Yu. N. Stolyarov ; Association of Russian School Librarians ; Library Science Department of the International Informatization Academy ; Russian State Library ; Book Culture Research Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences ; National Library of Sakha Republic (Yakutia). – Moscow : RUSLA, 2019. – 416 p. [In Russian]In his new book, Yury N. Stolyarov reconstructs the biography of Nikolay [Nikolas] Aleksandrovich Rubakin, the author of over 280 books and 300 articles. The monograph is based on the series of papers by Stolyarov published in professional periodicals. The author includes Rubakin’s biography beginning with his birth in the town of Oranienbaum (now (Lomonosov, Leningradskaya oblast, Russia) till his last days in Switzerland. Yu. Stolyarov portrays a person who had to emigrate, though his all life was wholeheartedly devoted to Russia. The author investigates into archival materials, publications by the scholar, his personal correspondence, which enabled Stolyarov to demonstrate political, social and cultural impacts on Rubakin’s life and vectors of his studies. In his book, Stolyarov emphasizes the scholar’s great contribution to the study of problems in library science and bibliology, i. e. the role of libraries in self-education, promotion of science knowledge among population groups, collection development, book selection for children, reading theory, etc. Yu. Stolyarov also focuses on bibliopsychology — an independent discipline, developed by N. Rubakin and won the support of the library community. The findings of bibliopsychology has been being still used globally.

Introduction: The spread of false news related to nutrition shows the need to provide general public validated information on food and health, inducing them to follow healthy dietary habits. Objective: To assess whether attendance to book clubs devoted to scientific disseminations books is a useful strategy for improving nutritional knowledge among the population. Methodology: 65 adults participated in a reading club, attending a research center once a month for 4 months to talk about informative scientific books on food/nutrition. The knowledge of the participants was monitored through a survey performed in all the sessions of the club. Results: Participants were mostly female with university studies. Attendance to the book clubs caused a significant increase (P < 0.05) in the number of correct answers on a questionnaire about common misbeliefs on the topics covered in the discussed books. Participants showed a high degree of satisfaction with the activity and willingness to read more scientific dissemination books, even when most of them were not previously usual readers. Conclusions: Book clubs based on popular science books and led by scientists with expertise in the field could increase nutritional knowledge among general population, which should be further explored in different socioeconomic contexts.

In his review of the Estonian translation of Richard Sennett’s The Craftsman, Urmas Lüüs, from the Estonian Art Academy, expresses his thoughts about the general position of ’material arts’ in the context of Estonian higher art education and the ways the book could help to cast new light on the forms of artistic self-expression that embrace making and skill besides conceptual ideas and design. In addition to materiality and technical skills, tacit knowledge is another very important concept addressed by Sennett. Lüüs provides some contemporary examples where tacit knowledge is studied. Some attempts to re-evoke tacit knowledge may not be successful, because they have been passed literally from hand to hand, but the knowledge has perished alongside the growth of industrial production, much like it happened in metal casting for sculptures. Lüüs points out that the book nicely pairs up with Jyrki Siukonen’s book Hammer and silence that was translated and published some years earlier and enjoyed very positive reception on behalf of art students. Both books show the way towards accepting the significance of (manual) skills in all types of creative activity.

Abstract This paper first surveys the structure, content and purpose of al-Āmidī’s al-Muwāzana, the largest work of poetic criticism of the fourth/tenth century, then its medieval reception, which grants it quasi-encyclopaedic authority. Modern reception has often dehistoricized it by viewing it only as criticism, but book studies suggest broader contexts of interpretation. Looser than “encyclopaedia,” the notion of the “big book,” like those by al-Āmidī’s contemporaries and neighbours Abū l-Faraj al-Iṣfahānī and al-Tanūkhī, fits well with al-Muwāzana. The chronology of al-Āmidī’s life, and the idea of his “big book” as a highly personal work of lifelong scholarship, endorse M.Z. Sallām’s reading of al-Muwāzana as an intellectual ego-document. Finally, the citation practices of fourth/tenth-century “big books” anticipate aspects of the “archival” outlook of Mamluk scholarship and suggest how the “big books” discussed here sought to validate their own versions of cultural memory.

The editorial goals of the Journal of Marketing are (1) to advance the science and practice of marketing and (2) to serve as a bridge between the scholarly and the practical realms, each of which has a vital stake in what is happening on the other side. The main vehicle upon which the Journal of Marketing relies for achieving these goals is the publication of full-length articles that are grounded in scholarly research. However, two other sections of the Journal, the Literature Review and the Book Reviews, also play a vital role in fulfilling its editorial goals. The former section informs JM readers about developments that have appeared in related journals, whereas the latter focuses on providing critical reviews of influential books. The following editorial (1) reviews the role of books and book reviews in the knowledge dissemination process, (2) details the role of the Book Reviews, and (3) offers some guidelines for book reviewers.

Purpose The paper aims to understand the book subscription characteristics of the students at each college and help the library administrators to conduct efficient library management plans for books in the library. Unlike the traditional association rule mining (ARM) techniques which mine patterns from a single data set, this paper proposes a model, recency-frequency-college (RFC) model, to analyse book subscription characteristics of library users and then discovers interesting association rules from equivalence-class RFC segments. Design/methodology/approach A framework which integrates the RFC model and ARM technique is proposed to analyse book subscription characteristics of library users. First, the author applies the RFC model to determine library users’ RFC values. After that, the author clusters library users’ transactions into several RFC segments by their RFC values. Finally, the author discovers RFC association rules and analyses book subscription characteristics of RFC segments (library users). Findings The paper provides experimental results from the survey data. It shows that the precision of the frequent itemsets discovered by the proposed RFC model outperforms the traditional approach in predicting library user subscription itemsets in the following time periods. Besides, the proposed approach can discover interesting and valuable patterns from library book circulation transactions. Research limitations/implications Because RFC thresholds were assigned based on expert opinion in this paper, it is an acquisition bottleneck. Therefore, researchers are encouraged to automatically infer the RFC thresholds from the library book circulation transactions. Practical implications The paper includes implications for the library administrators in conducting library book management plans for different library users. Originality/value This paper proposes a model, the RFC model, to analyse book subscription characteristics of library users.

The review of the monograph by Yury Nikolaevich Stolyarov (The origins of the book culture [Istoki knizhno kultury] / Yu. N. Stolyarov; Ed. By V. Ya. Rushanin, Chelyabinsk State Institute of Culture. - Chelyabinsk: ChGIK, 2017. - 500 p.) reveals the contribution of Yury Stolyarov into the documentological knowledge. His book is unique due to the scale of presented empirical material and the depth of investigation of the origins of the written culture, namely, the myths, tales, folk stories and songs, epos and religious beliefs. Consistent and appropriate application of the research tools of sociocommunicative, system and culturological approaches enriches significantly the methodology of documentology, contributes to the bibliological knowledge and facilitates further understanding of the book, document and spiritual culture of the humankind. Yu. Stolyarov innovatively reveals the specific features of each of the book culture origins through the rise and development of the document monument system elements, i.e. semantive, signitive, synactive, temporal, pragmative, material and structural. The reviewer substantiates that Yury Stolyarov’s theoretical generalizations based on the study of unprecedentally large-scale empirical material and the deep chronology of book culture origins make this publication by Yury Stolyarov the fundamental, encyclopedic work.

Abstract I review two recent books on music, both inspired by cognitive neuroscience but differing in most other respects. Isabelle Peretz, an expert in the cognitive neuroscience of music, describes how we perceive and produce music, as reflected in neural and behavioral responsiveness. Her book is intended for general readers who are interested in music and curious about the science behind our musical nature—brains that are prepared for music and changed by active musical engagement. Lynn Helding, an expert in vocal performance and pedagogy, draws on findings from psychology and neuroscience to inform her approach to music learning and teaching. Aimed at musicians, aspiring musicians, and those who teach them, her book focuses largely on the means of optimizing learning and skilled performance.

A trading book of the 16th century was analyzed as a separate source with a view of exploring the nature of mineralogical knowledge that our ancestors living in the 16th-17th centuries had. The analysis included comparison of the stones mentioned in the book with genuine minerals including review of the listed mineralogical characteristics. The paper notes that the book describes primarily true mineralogical properties in contrast to books of home remedies and books of herbal cures as well as books of official and prohibited booklore. The main method to distinguish between the most precious stones and less valuable ones is based on analysis of stone hardness. This mineral property is still widely used for their diagnostics based on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness, with scale number from 1 to 10. The author of the trading book suggests to use special “standards” for determining the most precious minerals such as fragments of true gemstones (jachont, lal, and emerald). It is rather important that he mentions emery as material for processing precious stones. Along with the finds of unprocessed gemstones in the layers of the 16th<-17th centuries it is an evidence of existence of jewelry workshops.

For students, the practice of writing, illustrating, and publishing facilitates deep learning experiences, both within and beyond the discipline for which the writing is targeted. In this case study, students created books under the umbrella of a large, transdisciplinary research project: a science-based, illustrated activity book, a children’s fiction chapter book with illustrations, an adolescent novel, and two illustrated social studies activity books. Students completed the self-directed research, wrote the narratives, created the artwork, sought the advice of outside scholars and artists, and revised with discipline-specific mentors. Data include the books, mentor notes, and student-reported learning outcomes. Data reveal broad content and pedagogical skill knowledge acquisition, knowledge synthesis, and a deep level of self-authorship.

AbstractThis paper is a critical notice of Andrea Kern's book Sources of Knowledge. In the first part, I outline some criteria of adequacy I believe any credible philosophical account of knowledge should meet. In the second, I consider how Kern's book measures up to those criteria. Finally, I offer a sympathetic and constructive discussion of a number of key elements of Kern's approach, including the relation of her position to the philosophy of John McDowell, from which Kern draws inspiration; her defence of disjunctivism; her concept of a rational capacity for knowledge and its acquisition; and her understanding of scepticism.

Books and their reviews have been historically central to knowledge dissemination in the social sciences and humanities. Despite this perceive importance, few studies have assessed the relative importance of these document types in the dissemination of knowledge. This paper aims at better understanding the place of book reviews in the scholarly communication system and to shed light--through the analysis of books on Canada, United Kingdom and United States and their reviewers--on the international circulation of ideas in the social sciences and humanities. Based on 1,675,999 book reviews indexed in the Social Science Citation Index and Arts and Humanities Citation Index over the 1975-2016 period, our results show that book reviews are decreasing in importance in all disciplines—especially those where books have historically been peripheral. We also observe a high rate of homophily between reviewers and reviewed books, with researchers being primarily interested in the books that have been written by someone from their own country. Hence, despite the now widely held assumptions of the globalization of science, social science and humanities remains a highly localized activity.

The emblem book customized as a Stammbuch is a material manifestation of early modern cultural practices of knowledge creation and organization. Dorothea von Anhalt’s use of Andreas Friedrich’s Emblemata Nova . . . (1617) as a Stammbuch created a hybrid artifact of dynasty and devotion as manuscript entries made by Dorothea’s extended family members merged with the existing printed material. This unique book illuminates female practices of recording, circulating, and preserving dynastic and religious knowledge at North German Protestant courts.

Background The use of KIA books by midwives in Parigi Moutong Regency has not been optimal at around 82.1%, while those who do not use KIA books as much as 17.9% are due to the fact that at all times there is always a revision of the KIA book and there is no training in filling KIA books, only socializing Zoom Meetings and YouTube Channels, so many midwives still do not understand about filling it out, especially in the mother's section of the book. The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between midwife's knowledge and the role of midwives in the use of KIA Books. The method is Cross cross-sectional approach, the population in this study is all Midwives in the Parigi Moutong Regency Area. The sample amounted to 83 respondents. The instrument used is a questionnaire—univariate and bivariate data analysis with a chi-square test. The study's results found that some respondents were well knowledgeable, 77 people (92.8%) and had good roles totaling 81 people (97.6%). With a p-value of ≤ 0.05 which is 0.004. The conclusion is that there is a relationship between midwives' knowledge and the role of midwives in the use of KIA Books in the Parigi Moutong Regency Area. It is expected for health workers, especially midwives, to motivate mothers more in terms of using KIA books.

This study has two primary objectives. The first one is preparation of an efficient review book including a series of activities, which will help fourth grade students exercise what they learned in the elementary science course in a year. The second objective is examination of the prepared book in the framework of student and teacher opinions. In this study, 10 classroom teachers are interviewed at the initial stage. As a result of these interviews, a significant need is determined for a review book for elementary science course, particularly. In the study, qualitative research methods, such as observation, interviews, document analysis and focus group discussion, are used. Data collection tools compose of review book for elementary science course, teacher interview forms, student focus group discussion form and forms, in which students evaluate all activities in the book. The review book prepared by the researchers consists of 38 activities. This book was applied to 25 fifth grade students. These interviews are supported with data of observation and document analysis. The obtained data are analyzed with the content analysis. The review book is considered efficient by teacher and students. This is because it can be applied within a short time and contains whole elementary science topics of fourth grade. Furthermore, teacher can specify students' prior knowledge at the beginning of the academic year and adjust the level and teaching methods in the course accordingly. It can also be used effectively throughout the term.
