Adolescents are individuals with high curiosity, including sexual behavior. BKKBN findings in 2017 show that the age group of 15-17 years is the highest age of first dating and age 17 is the highest age of first sexual intercourse. This study aims to determine whether there is a relationship between the role of parents, peer influence and the use of mass media with risky sexual behavior in adolescents at SMAN 76 Jakarta. This study used cross sectional study and was conducted on 154 respondents through a simple random sampling method. Data collection uses questionnaires on the role of parents, peer influence, the use of mass media and risky sexual behavior that have been tested for validity and reliability. Statistical test results using Chi-Square showed a significant relationship between the role of parents with risky sexual behavior (p = 0.001), peer influence with risky sexual behavior (p = 0.001) and the use of mass media for risky sexual behavior (p = 0.001). It is recommended that schools collaborate with local health services in conducting health education, counseling or therapy related to the problem of risky sexual behavior in adolescents.

Abstract. Premarital sexual behavior is the behavior that is driven by sexual desire, both with the opposite sex or same sex without going through a legal marriage process according to law and religion. This study aims to describe premarital adolescent sexual behavior based on sex, age and education level. The design in this study is descriptive quantitative by collecting data from premarital sexual behavior scale (consisted of 11 items) compiled by Widowati (2009). The participants were 400 teenagers aged 17-24 years, currently or have been dating, unmarried, and domiciled at Kelapa Lima Sub District. Data analysis by kruskall-wallis test. The result showed that there are significant differences in premarital adolescent sexual behavior based on sex and age, but there is no significant difference in adolescent sexual behavior based on education level. The teenagers are expected to be able to maintain their behavior and filter information received from peers or the mass media.

Abstract Syphilis is one of the deadly sexually-transmitted diseases. This paper studied the impacts of sexual behavior, mass media report and treatment of infected individuals on the dynamics of syphilis transmission. The analytical and numerical analyses of the model are presented. The disease free equilibrium of the model is both locally and globally asymptotic stable when the associated reproduction number is less than unity. Analysis of the Reproduction number shows that it is not possible to control syphilis disease transmission if the rate of individuals practicing risky sexual behavior is high. Furthermore, the treatment of late (latent and tertiary) syphilis infection is beneficial to the infected individuals, but has no impact in the lowering of the reproduction number. This study suggests that the effective control strategy of syphilis must focus on lowering the number of individuals practicing risky sexual behavior and applying higher treatment rates for early syphilis infections. Furthermore, the media function should address the issues regarding safe sexual behavior. Keywords: Syphilis, sexually transmitted infection, Risky sexual behavior, Mass media

(1) Background: Improving sexual autonomy among women in sexual unions comes with various benefits, including the reduction of sexually transmitted and blood-borne infections. We examined the relationship between mass media exposure and safer sex negotiation among women in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). (2) Methods: The study involved a cross-sectional analysis of Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) data of 29 sub-Saharan African countries. A total of 224,647 women aged 15–49 were included in our analyses. We examined the association between mass media exposure and safer sex negotiation using binary logistic regression analysis. The results are presented using a crude odds ratio (cOR) and adjusted odds ratio (aOR), with their respective confidence intervals (CIs). Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. (3) Results: The overall prevalence of safer sex negotiation among women in sexual unions in SSA was 71.6% (71.4–71.8). Women exposed to mass media had higher odds of negotiating for safer sex compared with those who had no exposure (aOR = 1.94; 95% CI = 1.86–2.02), and this persisted after controlling for covariates (maternal age, wealth index, maternal educational level, partner’s age, partner’s educational level, sex of household head, religion, place of residence, and marital status) (aOR = 1.40; 95% CI = 1.35–1.46). The disaggregated results showed higher odds of safer sex negotiation among women exposed to mass media in all the individual countries, except Ghana, Comoros, Rwanda, and Namibia. (4) Conclusions: The findings could inform policies (e.g., transformative mass media educational seminars) and interventions (e.g., face-to-face counselling; small group sensitization sessions) in SSA on the crucial role of mass media in increasing safer sex practice among women in sexual unions. To accelerate progress towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goal five’s targets on empowering all women and safeguarding their reproductive rights, the study recommends that countries such as Ghana, Comoros, Rwanda, and Namibia need to intensify their efforts (e.g., regular sensitization campaigns) in increasing safer sex negotiation among women to counter power imbalances in sexual behaviour.

The authors set to investigate the influence of the Mass Media on adolescents' knowledge of and behavior towards sex and sexuality, especially, regarding early sex, the use of contraceptives and condoms. The participants were drawn from five secondary schools in Owerri Municipality, the Capital of Imo State, Nigeria. The simple size included 100 respondents made up of males and females between the ages of 10 and 19 years drawn from simple random sampling. Questionnaire containing semi-structured (close-ended) questions. Interview sessions involving media workers form select radio, television and newspaper houses in Owerri were conducted. Three research questions and one hypothesis were used to straighten the study. Results showed the respondents mean age for first sex is 17.8 years. The findings show that the media did not have very significant influence at 0.05 on adolescents' sexual behavior, especially, as regards, having first sex experience. This result is explained by the fact that most the respondents lived in boarding hostels and may not have access to media, while in school. It was recommended the influence of family members, including parents and peer groups should be given priority attention when adolescent sexual behavior is discussed, especially, in Nigeria where extended family members play a vital role in the socialization of the adolescents.

Thesis (MA)--University of Stellenbosch, 2005.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis focuses on the representation of women in media aimed at women. A critical examination of visual communication (magazines, advertising and visual story-telling1) will demonstrate that the media may be regarded as highly influential in the way women perceive their bodies, reproduction and sexuality. I begin by examining the presentation of the ‘ideal’ woman as an instance of the Pygmalion complex. This reading of the media’s formulation of the female ideal aims to demonstrate the psychological effects of the Pygmalion complex on women, and illustrates how the resultant striving for perfection drives production and consumption. I shall demonstrate how the image of the ‘ideal’ woman is increasingly more sophisticated and convincingly portrayed through the use of digital manipulation, plastic surgery, excessive dieting and exercise regimes. I propose that the average woman is left feeling inadequate and is undermined by the voice of her own cultural representation. This thesis also investigates the persistence of the virgin / whore binary in the media’s depiction of female sexuality. I propose that this is an essentialist and dualistic presentation of female sexuality as either ‘good’ (surrendered, submissive and conforming – i.e. the virgin); or ‘bad’ (transgressive, explicit, dangerous and destructive – i.e. the whore). I further suggest that this polarised appropriation of women’s sexuality deprives women of ownership of their own sexuality. I also propose that the media’s treatment of female sexuality presents women as being in competition within one another for male attention and approval and that this representation damages female solidarity. Finally I demonstrate that pornography has infiltrated all aspects of popular culture, from magazines to music videos. My hypothesis is that this use of pornographic conventions depicts the rape and abuse of women as normative, commonplace and even entertaining, and that this has a detrimental effect on both women’s and men’s sexual and social wellbeing.

Kaija, Barbara Night Mbabazi. "An investigation of how Kampala teenagers who read Straight talk negotiate HIV/AIDS messages". Thesis, Rhodes University, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1002894.

Resumo:
This study is a qualitative ethnographic investigation of how teenagers in Kampala, Uganda, who read the HIV/AIDS publication aimed at adolescents, Straight Talk, negotiate HIV/AIDS messages. It seeks to establish to what extent these secondary school teenagers accept the key messages (known as ABC; Abstain, Be faithful or use a Condom) and understand the factual aspects of the messages about HIV/AIDS, its process of transmission and prevention. It also seeks to probe how the lived realities of the teenagers affect their particular negotiations of the HIV/AIDS messages. It includes a focus on how proximity to HIV/AIDS, gender and family economic disposition might affect teenagers, negotiation of the HIV/AIDS meanings. To investigate the respondents’ reception of HIV/AIDS messages, the study employed focus groups that consisted of two stages, namely the ‘news game’ and group discussions. In the ‘news game’ stage (Philo, 1990; Kitzinger, 1993) the teenage participants were required to produce a version of a one-page copy of an HIV/AIDS newspaper targeting teenagers. In the second stage of the focus group a structured discussion probed the teenagers’ negotiation of the HIV/AIDS media messages. In the news game, the teenagers on the whole reproduced the key Straight Talk HIV/AIDS messages ‘Abstain, Be faithful or use a Condom’ and also images showing the effects of HIV/AIDS but featured fewer images depicting the factual aspects of HIV/AIDS process of transmission and risky behaviour. In the structured discussion that followed the news game, it was evident that not all the teenagers necessarily believed the messages they produced. In spite of producing the ABC Straight Talk messages, some of them were uncertain and confused about the absolute safety of the condom because of fears that they were either porous, expired or would interfere with sexual pleasure. Secondly, though many of the teenagers in the study reproduced images that showed that they consider marriage as desirable and talked about their desire to abstain from sex till marriage, a considerable number think abstinence is not achievable due to competing values. Thirdly, the participant teenagers could differentiate between HIV and AIDS but many did not realise that with the advent of anti-retroviral drugs even people who have AIDS can look normal. In spite of repeating the Straight Talk message that “no one was safe” and being aware of the risky behaviour that their fellow teenagers get involved in, the teenagers seemed to think that their age cohort is safe from HIV and it is the adults who are likely to infect them. The study findings further indicate that the teenagers’ lived experience at times influence their negotiation of HIV/AIDS media messages. This was probed in terms of economic standing, gender and proximity to HIV/AIDS. In relation to gender one surprising discovery was that certain girls in the study feared getting pregnant more than getting HIV/AIDS. The study finally suggests that these findings are of significance for designing future media initiatives in relation to HIV/AIDS.

This is a study of a child abuse panic. The events that brought Martensville, Saskatchewan to national and international attention in 1992 were similar in many respects to other panics concerning multiple allegations of child abuse that occurred in the Western world in the 1980s and 1990s. The methodology of the study included a review of descriptions of child abuse panics published in the mass media and in books and journal articles. Interviews were conducted with residents of Martensville, child advocates, reporters, investigators, officers of the court, expert witnesses and several of the accused. Five theoretical accounts or explanations of the events were examined in detail: Satanic ritual abuse, recovered memories, false memory syndrome, hysterical epidemic and moral panic. These accounts were considered in light of broader sociological theory. It was determined that the moral panic account provided greater explanatory potential than the other accounts. Moral panics are seen as a form of distorted communication that was typical of mass media treatment of certain conditions in the 1980s and 1990s under which allegations of child abuse targeted a group of people who were defined as a threat. Feminist theory, the concept of risk society and Habermas' theory of communicative action were examined to provide insights into ways of addressing and mitigating the panic and harm that occurred in Martensville. Conclusions and policy considerations centre on the need for training of professions involved in the investigation and response to child abuse, public education within a framework of communicative rationality and, ultimately, reclamation of the public sphere with attendant expansion of opportunities for face-to-face communication in public decision-making.

The quantitative study focuses on the perceptions of Nigerian adolescent students to HIV/AIDS and their attitudes to prevention methods. From the literature reviewed it was ascertained that adolescent students do have positive and optimistic perceptions of HIV/AIDS, and also adequate knowledge, but this has not translated into positive attitudes to prevention methods. The literature also indicated that peer group pressure, parental control and the mass media are some variables that probably influence adolescents’ sexual behaviour. This researcher developed the ‘Adolescent Students’ Perception of HIV/AIDS and Attitude to Prevention Methods Questionnaire’ to solicit information from the adolescent students. The results were coded and duly analysed. The results from the empirical study indicated that Nigerian adolescent students have positive perceptions regarding HIV/AIDS, as well as positive attitudes to prevention methods. Recommendations were made for curriculum experts, educators and parents based on current research methods.

The study raises the problem of gender inclusiveness in the mass media as one of the ways of formation in the public consciousness of the idea about the parity of women, men and non-binary people in society. In particular, the purpose of the paper is to establish in a comparative aspect the methods of gender nomination and neutralization in modern French and Ukrainian mass media by performing a number of tasks: identifying the features of mass media discourse as an object of gender research; defining the concepts of gender, gender identity and inclusive communication; establishment of inclusive language and inclusive writing strategies; distinguishing gender-marked and gender-neutral vocabulary in modern mass media; comparison of features of the implementation of gender identity in French and Ukrainian mass media texts. Methodology of the study is based on general research methods of analysis and synthesis, induction and deduction, observation, description and abstraction, as well as comparative analysis. Mass media discourse, which reflects the current state of society, is a convenient field for gender research, for establishing the peculiarities of stereotypes of male and female speech behavior. The press forms the idea of the role of men and women in society in the public consciousness. It shaped the system of gender markers and language stereotypes, etc. So, this gender factor, which considers a person’s natural sex and social roles, is one of the essential characteristics of an individual. Exactly the gender in a certain way affects the awareness of one’s identity, as well as the identification of an individual by other members of society. The resultsof the study showed that the emergence of gender-marked and gender-neutral words is due to changes in society, which find their expression in language. Gender marking is interpreted as a set of features that allow identifying the linguistic unit’s belonging to a certain gender. Two types of gender-marked vocabulary were distinguished: lexical-semantic, and grammatical. In both languages male gender-marked vocabulary is more used than female. This fact actualized the existence of the problem of gender inequality to this day. In addition, during to this research we have singled out the spheres of activity with which men are most often associated. There are politics, sports, business and public activities. Whereas women who despite the dominance of their image in everyday life, in the family, begin to compete with oppositional gender in the political and public spheres, in professional activities, etc. As for gender neutrality, it should be noted that gender-neutral vocabulary is just beginning to become widely used in mass media discourse. That can be explained by still existing certain stereotypes in the cultures of both countries. Currently, in the mass media of both languages, in order to maintain political correctness, there is a tendency to increase the lexical units denoting a person in general, without taking into account his sexual characteristics. By this way we have observed namely words that are neutral by definition, collective concepts, plural nouns, full and shortened doublets, neutral pronouns, neologisms with epicene endings, etc. Value. Also, gender studies contribute to the formation of a tolerant attitude towards men, women and non-binary people. Gender-marked vocabulary, used to denote new female images in politics, public life, etc., shows a positive shift in society regarding women’s problems. On the other hand, there are so-called gender-inclusive words, certain grammatical constructions that allow non-binary people to feel comfortable in society.
