Abstract A Christmas tree plantation of Virginia pines in Wayne Co., NC was selected to test an experimental growth regulator for efficacy. RH-5992, developed by Rohm and Haas Company, was tested using 2 application rates and was applied with spreader-sticker triton B-1956 (4 oz/100 gal). Guthion and Dimilin were used as standards. Using a randomized block design, 4 blocks of 25 trees were selected for each treatment and controls. The trees were sprayed on 12 Apr, about 10 d after peak flight of adults, with a hand pump sprayer to the point of run-off. The trees were evaluated on 30 May, 7 wk after treatment. The dead terminals were examined for tip moth and counted on treated and untreated trees, using 3 center trees of each block in the evaluation.

Iphigenia is not one. She is multiple. Central to Wayne Shorter and esperanza spalding's opera titled …(Iphigenia) is the layered multiplicity of Iphigenias who are sacrificed/martyred, time and again, for the cause of Grecian nation building. Unlike other stage and filmic renditions of the opera that tell Iphigenia's story once, emphasizing the psychic drama of what it means to give one's blood for the ideological cause of nation building, …(Iphigenia) repeats the story piling up bodies on stage. Dressed in pink, red, white, silver, fur and more (Fig. 4), Iphigenia's body becomes multiple, becomes collective, becomes sisterhood, becomes interspecies.

Introduction Coronavirus disease (COVID) dashboards rarely provide insights about the racialized contexts in which vaccination inequities occur. Objective The purpose of this study was to use the emerging Project REFOCUS dashboard to contextualize COVID vaccination patterns among 6 diverse communities. Methods We queried the dashboard to generate descriptive statistics on vaccination trends and racism-related contextual factors among the 6 Project REFOCUS pilot sites (Albany, Georgia, Bronx, New York, Detroit, Michigan, Helena-West Helena, Arkansas, San Antonio, Texas, and Wake County, North Carolina). Results Vaccination rates, demographic indicators, and contextual factors differed across sites. As of October 17, 2022, the proportion of people who had received at least 1 COVID vaccine dose ranged from 58.4% (Wayne County, Michigan) to 95.0% (Wake County, North Carolina). The pilot sites with the greatest percentage of Black residents (Dougherty County, Georgia, Wayne County, Michigan, and Phillips County, Arkansas) had lower proportions of fully vaccinated people. Wayne County, Michigan, had the highest level of residential segregation between Black and White residents (78.5%) and non-White and White residents (68.8%), whereas Phillips County, Arkansas, had the highest overall mortgage denial rates (38.9%). Both counties represent settings where over 75.0% of residents report Black race and over 30.0% of the population live in poverty. Discussion The dashboard integrates racism-related factors with COVID vaccination visualizations and provides a fuller picture of the context in which COVID trends are occurring. Conclusions Community organizers, researchers, policymakers, and practitioners can track racism-related factors and other social determinants of health as part of the contexts in which COVID-related inequities occur.

Abstract In the first two decades of the twenty-first century, there were several stories in the popular media about Black men's and boys’ experiences of childhood sexual violence. Though this media attention is noteworthy given the stereotypes of Black men as hypermasculine and hypersexual that have positioned Black men as beyond the pale of public sympathy, stories of Black male sexual victimization can also traffic in narratives of deviance. This article examines media representation of the childhood sexual experiences of national recording artists Chris Brown and Lil Wayne to show how deterministic narratives of sexual deviance and sexual victimization circumscribe Black men's sexual stories and proposes a way of reading these stories beyond those narrative constraints.

Abstract Prunus cistina growing in 2-gal containers and infested with Synanthedon exitiosa were planted in a research plot at the Ohio State University Agricultural Research and Development Center in early June, prior to moth emergence. These plants were used for evaluating efficacy of selected insecticides for reducing establishment of peachtree borer larvae. A COz compression sprayer with a Teejet SS8004 flat-fan nozzle operating at 16 psi was used to spray four 4-plant replicates/treatment arranged in a randomized complete block design. Sprays were applied 14 Jun under sunny skies at 18C with a breeze of 8-16 km/h. Each plant received 70 ml of finished spray on its lower trunk and limbs. Treatment effectiveness was evaluated 6 Sep by examining the base of each plant for exudate and frass.

Abstract Controlled release and standard granular formulations of carbofuran and bendiocarb were incorporated in potting media before planting or broadcast on the media surface after planting to evaluate their efficacy against black vine weevil larvae. Incorporation was accomplished by mixing media (peat, sand, hardwood bark, pine bark (3:2:2:3) + fertilizer) and insecticide granules in a twin-shell blender for 3 min. Immediately after mixing, the media was used to pot 2-yr-old Taxus media and intermedia in 5.7 1 (1.5 gal) containers. Plants were watered immediately after planting and every Mon, Wed, and Fri thereafter. Eighteen days after planting, 200 brown weevil eggs were placed in a depression ca. 2.5 cm beneath the media surface adjacent to roots in each container. Eggs were obtained from weevils originally collected from taxus and held with fresh taxus foliage at 18-21°C and 85 + % RH. Containers that were to receive broadcast treatments were infested, as before, 17 days after planting. Twenty-five days after inoculating containers with eggs, granules were applied to the media surface using a 5 dram glass vial with holes in the cap in a salt-shaker fashion. Containers were watered in as before. All containers were maintained outdoors until late Oct when they were moved to a greenhouse where temperatures fluctuated between 21 and 25°C. Treatment effectiveness was evaluated in early Feb by inspecting container media for mature larvae.

Presented as a series of notes, this article explores scavenging as a methodology of refusal, anchored in black studies, black feminist thought, queer studies and indigenous studies, and thinks of the possibilities it offers for rethinking feminist research. Engaging with the works of Katherine McKittrick and of Eve Tuck and K. Wayne Yang in particular, I unravel scavenging and interrogate the possibilities it offers for feminist, queer and decolonial scholarship. I argue that scavenging cultivates wonder; resists extractive logics pervasive in academic research; refuses disciplinarity; demands attention; offers possibilities for repair; channels feeling, desire and the erotic; and, finally, encourages us to think about form in academic writing. Throughout, scavenging is therefore sketched out as a methodology for worldmaking.

AbstractWhy has the Cuban government been so successful in its system of social control, and why might that system's effectiveness now be on the wane? This study argues that Cuba combines formal and informal systems of control that simultaneously emphasize openness and rigidity. The formal system is geared to block all antihegemonic acts, particularly those that, if left unchecked, could become symbolic acts encouraging similar behavior that the authorities deem undesirable. The system favors reactive rather than proactive approaches, as exemplified by the rapid action brigades. Noninstitutionalized collective behavior is also taking place, as is the emergence of civil society.

This study was initiated to assess the effect of blended fertilizer of Nitrogen(N), phosphorus(P), sulfur(S) and boron(B) rate on yield and quality of Ethiopian newly release varieties of wane (2016) and king bird (2015) of bread wheat varieties by Kulumsa Agricultural Research Center Wheat Breeding Program. A field experiment was carried out in 2018 robi season to determine grain quality and yield response of bread wheat varieties to different rate of fertilizer. The treatments was factorial combination of eight levels control, recommended PN (150 kg ha-1 TSP (69 P2O5) + 158.7 kg ha-1 Urea (73 N), 100 kg NPSB (18.1N + 36.1P2O5 + 6.7S + 0.71B), 100 kg NPSB + Rec. Urea (46 kg N) , 150 kg NPSB + Rec. Urea, 200 kg NPSB + Rec. Urea, 250 kg NPSB + Rec. Urea, 300 kg NPSB + Rec. Urea) and two bread wheat varieties (wane and king bird). The experiment design was laid in Randomized Complete Block Design with factorial arrangement of two varieties. Phonological traits, grain quality parameters and yield were taken as experimental variables. The result showed that grain yield, thousand kernel weight and hectoliter weight were significantly affected by interaction of fertilizer rate and varieties. However, days to heading, days to maturity, plant height, number of productive tillers, straw yield and number of grains per spike were significantly affected by both fertilizer rate and varieties. The highest Seeds per spick (53.9), thousand kernel weight (37.3 g), and SY (9071.7 kg ha-1) in the main effect were recorded from 300 kg NPSB treatment with supplementary urea, whereas grain protein content (12.1%) was recorded from 73/69 kg recommended NP (12.1%). The interaction effect of PT and BY showed that variety Wane scored Wane7.7 PT and 14053 kg ha-1 as compared to 6.0 PT and 12009 kg ha-1 BY in variety Kingbird at 300 kg NPSB fertilizer treatment with supplementary urea; whereas the least was observed at control. The higher GY was produced in Wane (4236 kg ha-1) variety at 300 kg NPSB fertilizer treatment; but in Kingbird (3737 kg ha-1) variety 200 kg NPSB fertilizer treatment with supplementary urea. Wane variety was found to be better in terms of both agronomic and economical feasible. However, as the experiment was conducted only for a single season, the repeat of the study is suggested for more seasons around Kulumsa area and similar agro ecology.

The Upper Permian and Lower Triassic rocks in the northwestern Paradox basin are closely related even though they are separated by a significant unconformity. Careful analysis of surface and subsurface data provides a framework to relate underlying units to deposition of suprajacent units. The Black Dragon Member of the Triassic Moenkopi Formation infilled the topography on the underlying Permian units. The thickness of the Black Dragon Member is inversely related to the thickness of the underlying White Rim Sandstone. The upper portion of the Black Dragon Member was deposited primarily in coastal marine environments with a very low westward depositional slope. An oolite-bearing carbonate shelf present during subsequent Sinbad Member deposition was also controlled, in part, by thickness distribution of the Permian White Rim Sandstone. The Torrey Member was deposited on the Sinbad Member in a fine-grained, elastic-dominated, low energy, very flat coastal environment. The Moody Canyon Member (uppermost Moenkopi) was deposited in a subaqueous environment, probably marine. The Emery uplift, a pre-White rim tectonic element, did not affect deposition of the White Rim, Kaibab or Moenkopi strata. The San Rafael Swell is a Laramide tectonic feature that is offset from and unrelated to the Emery uplift or deposition of the Permian and Triassic units.

W celu zilustrowania proponowanej w pracy metody analizy statystycznej danych nieortogo¬nalnych z krzyżową i zagnieżdżoną strukturą poziomów czynników wykorzystano wyniki z kompletnego doświadczenia kombinowanego z łubinem. W pracy zrezygnowano z kompletności układu i zaplanowano doświadczenie z blokami mniejszymi niż liczba kombinacji obiektowych.

Abstract Treatments were applied to single-tree plots of apple trees in two orchards in Wayne Co. NY: (1) 'Spyjohn' trees in the,Dathyn orchard were ca 15 years old, 4.8 m high, and planted at a spacing of 5.8 by 6.4 m apart. (2) 'Wayne' apples in the Mills Orchard were ca 20 years old, 5.2 m high, and planted at a spacing of 10.7 by 11.9m apart. Treatments were arranged in a randomized block design and replicated on 4 trees. All sprays were applied dilute to runoff (3,656 1/ha) at a pressure of 32 kg/cm2. Summer infestations of larvae were compared by examining up to 50 actively growing terminals (Mills Orchard) or 100 fruit clusters (Dathyn Orchard) for live larvae after the first spray of the early treatments (20 Jun) or after the last treatment (10 Jul) was applied. Fruit damage was estimated by sampling between 100 and 300 fruit/ tree around the periphery from the ground to eye level on 12-14 Aug, and again on 9-11 Sep. The following pest phenology parameters after the first catch of males in pheromone traps (3 Jun) were used to time sprays: 19-20 Jun to coincide with predicted first hatch of eggs; 27-28 Jun (620-628 degree days, base temperature = 43°F) to coincide with a cumulative egg hatch of approximately 40%; and 9-10 Jul, in accordance with standard practices to retreat at 10-14 day intervals to maintain continuous effective residues while larvae are active.

Charles Rees was an eminent organic chemist. He specialized in the area of heterocyclic chemistry—the study of rings made up of carbon, nitrogen, oxygen and sulphur atoms—an important subject given that many medicines, agrochemicals, dyes and reprographic materials, as well as a very large number of naturally occurring compounds, including the DNA bases, the building blocks of life itself, are heterocyclic molecules. His scientific work was dominated by two overarching themes: reactive intermediates, in particular neutral, electron-deficient species such as carbenes, nitrenes and arynes, and unusual ring systems, particularly strained rings and novel aromatic systems, including those rich in sulphur and nitrogen atoms. Born in 1927, he was educated at Farnham Grammar School, then spent three years at the Royal Aircraft Establishment, before going to University College Southampton (later Southampton University) (BSc 1950, PhD 1953). After a postdoctoral period, he was appointed assistant lecturer at Birkbeck College, London, in 1955, before moving to a lectureship at King’s College, London, and subsequently to chairs at the University of Leicester (1965), the University of Liverpool (1969) and Imperial College, London (1978). He was elected to the Royal Society in 1974 and appointed CBE in 1995. He died in London in 2006.

Service-learning is a form of experiential learning that integrates curriculum objectives to address needs in the community. It also provides students with an opportunity to apply geospatial technology concepts in a real-world setting. This paper describes a service-learning project requiring students to create an interactive Google Map depicting historic buildings and artwork for the City of Wayne, Nebraska. Students create maps by using handheld GPS receivers and editing HTML and JavaScript. The objectives of this project align with several building blocks and critical work functions in the Geospatial Technology Competency Model (GTCM). This model, developed in 2010 by the U.S. Department of Labor, attempts to identify the knowledge and abilities needed in the geospatial industry workforce. In addition the methods, assessment, and challenges for developing and executing this project are described.

Abstract The COVID-19 pandemic, an unprecedented health emergency, has devastated the nation, and disproportionately affected persons of color, especially Black Americans. It has forced health officials to rapidly develop and distribute COVID-19 vaccines, resulting in the importance of understanding Black Americans’ attitudes and beliefs about COVID-19. We analyzed experiences of 167 Black Americans, ages 65 and older, recruited from Wayne State Institute of Gerontology Healthier Black Elders Center and surrounding communities. Participants were telephoned starting September 2020 and given the GAD-7 anxiety scale and a COVID-19 questionnaire measuring demographics, stressors, and emotional responses associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. A scale was also designed, adapted from the Health Belief Model, to measure fear of getting COVID-19, beliefs about the origins of COVID-19, uncertainty about vaccine safety, and intent to be vaccinated (5-point Likert scale). Of the 167 participants, 112 (67%) said they would agree to vaccination, 24 (14%) were ambivalent, and 31 (19%) said they would decline. T-tests comparing pro- and anti-vaccine participants showed that those not planning to get vaccinated expressed lower generalized anxiety (p=.002), COVID-19 fear (p<.001), and concerns about vaccine safety (p=.01), but greater belief that COVID-19 is man-made (p=.05). The current study provides a snapshot of urban Black American older adults who are in general eager to get vaccinated for COVID-19. Counterintuitively, those unwilling to accept the COVID-19 vaccine also had lower concerns for vaccine safety. More research is needed to fully understand the attitudes and beliefs of this underserved population regarding the COVID-19 virus and vaccine.

Abstract Granular and liquid insecticides were applied at planting time at a site near Wayne, NE on 26 May. The soil type was silty clay loam and the previous crop was alfalfa. The field was prepared by killing the alfalfa with 2,4-D and dicamba on 4 May. The plot was planted no till into slots prepared by the landowner’s planter. Residue cover was heavy. The experimental design was a randomized complete block with 4 replicates. Each treatment consisted of 2 rows 16 m long, with 2 untreated rows between each treatment; rows were 75 cm apart. Granular materials were applied in an 18 cm band by a John Deere 2 row planter equipped with a cone-belt insecticide distributor and incorporated by tines. Ambush 2 E was broadcast immediately after planting, with a 4 nozzle CO2 back pack sprayer equipped with T-jet 8002 nozzles applying approximately 177 liters/ha total volume at 25 psi. Spray width was 1.66 m. Ambush 2E was also banded with the same spray equipment but the 4 nozzle boom was replaced with a single nozzle. Band width was 37.7 cm. Topsoil moisture was adequate at time of planting and no rain fell during the evaluation period. Plots were evaluated by counting plants remaining on either side of a randomly selected 10 m length marked between the 2 treated rows. The results are given as number of plants per 20 m of row. Final plant stand count was taken on 25 Jun.

It is difficult to watch …(Iphigenia) and not think of abolition. To bear witness to Wayne Shorter and esperanza spalding's opera is to experience the collision of classical and jazz idiom, the interruption of violent cycles, the emergence of liberation. Yet as much as …(Iphigenia) is a story of abolition, it is also a story about the staying powers of sacrifice and myth. Winds that turn the wheel of oppression are the same blessed winds that propel ships out to sea. Furthermore, the interruption of inexhaustible, parodic virgin sacrifice is framed by the bodily toil that results from rejecting that cycle. We might easily observe …(Iphigenia) as a retelling that moves myth forward, into the future. The last Iphigenia, of the Open Tense (performed by esperanza spalding), ultimately refuses her seemingly inevitable fate, retching out the words that might otherwise temporarily satisfy the whims of the bloodthirsty men around her. …(Iphigenia), however, is a piece ‘at war with itself’. Perhaps in this way more than any other, it is able to communicate the tenseless timelessness of the Black radical tradition. The cyclicity of oppressive violence is the same cyclicity that dissolves artifice, the same cyclicity that produces solidarity as a substrate.

This essay engages the experimental playwright Nassim Soleimanpour’s White Rabbit Red Rabbit alongside the theological dramatic theory of Hans Urs von Balthasar. Every Soleimanpour play can only happen once. Actors receive the script as they begin the show; any given actor must perform Soleimanpour’s drama as a cold reading unique in history. I propose “Showtime” to theorize this theatrical temporality, exemplified by White Rabbit Red Rabbit and shared by von Balthasar’s theology, on analogy to stage space. This article further examines the play’s themes of identity, self-sacrifice, free obedience, and writing about time through a “theodramatic structural analysis” keyed to von Balthasar. Soleimanpour expands Balthasarian theodramatics in unexpected and unintended directions. So too did the performance of White Rabbit Red Rabbit I attended in 2016 that featured Wayne Brady as the actor. This essay concludes with analysis of that performance and how it places this essay’s theodramatic structural analysis into contexts of race and the history of anti-Black racism in the United States.

Abstract Photovoice is built upon the principle of empowerment. With the increased use of Smartphones, photovoice provides a more readily available qualitative option for co-research with older adults. This presentation provides examples from the current study illustrating the process of creating a project that uses photovoice to see how older adults construct the meaning of home and place. While the benefits of this design are many, some issues do arise during implementation, such as: creating study protocols to address Institutional Review Board (IRB) concerns; working with organizations to ensure that the design is truly co-created; and navigating and conducting photovoice in a completely virtual arena. Examples will also be drawn from technical training received as part of LeadingAge LTSS Center @UMass Boston and Collective Insight’s Aging Centered Outcomes Research Learning Collaborative, as well as the Healthier Black Elders Center, which is affiliated with the University of Michigan and Wayne State University.

Abstract A synthetic lethal interaction between polo-like kinase 4 (PLK4) and elevated TRIM37 was discovered in breast cancer and neuroblastoma (Meitinger et al. 2020; Yeow et al. 2020). High TRIM37 renders cells dependent on PLK4, a kinase that controls centriole duplication. Amplification and copy number gains of the 17q23 amplicon, where TRIM37 resides, are common in breast cancer and neuroblastoma and associated with early relapse and poor prognosis, making PLK4 a promising new synthetic lethal target for these patients. The development candidate ORIC-613 is an orally bioavailable, potent and exquisitely selective small molecule inhibitor of PLK4, which is synthetic lethal in TRIM37 high cells. ORIC-613 is highly selective against the kinome, including against the closely related aurora and PLK families. ORIC-613 ADME/PK profile includes high cell permeability and low potential for drug-drug interactions based on CYP profiling. ORIC-613 blocked PLK4 trans-autophosphorylation of phosphodegrons, leading to stabilization of PLK4, thus directly demonstrating target engagement in cells. PLK4 protein stabilization correlated with cell viability for ORIC-613, providing a quantifiable pharmacodynamic (PD) association with antitumor activity. Cell viability assessment in cancer cell lines revealed that ORIC-613 showed greater potency in TRIM37 high versus TRIM37 low cell lines. Importantly, ORIC-613 induced significantly greater apoptosis in TRIM37 high versus low cancer cell lines as measured by caspase 3/7 assay. We confirmed that ORIC-613 activity is on-target using an engineered cell line system of PLK4 G95L, in which the leucine mutation maintains enzymatic function but blocks compound binding. In cell viability assays, ORIC-613 was potent in the parental cells and lost activity in G95L cells. Analysis of genomic data from tumors indicates that TRIM37 copy number amplification and gain is prevalent across numerous cancers. Oral dosing of ORIC-613 resulted in tumor growth inhibition and regressions in TRIM37 high xenograft breast tumors with no body weight loss. In summary, ORIC-613 is a potential first- and best-in-class development candidate, with exquisite selectivity for PLK4, which demonstrates synthetic lethality in TRIM37 high tumors and has the potential to benefit these patients. OBJECTIVES/GOALS: During earlier periods of the pandemic, Black and Latinx populations in Michigan have suffered higher rates of infection, hospitalization, and deaths when compared to Whites. We conducted this study to understand how Black and Latinx residents perceived this disproportionate burden. METHODS/STUDY POPULATION: In 2021, 40 semi-structured interviews were conducted virtually in English or Spanish with Black (n=24) and Latinx (n=16) residents in Michigan areas highly impacted by COVID-19: Genesee, Kent, Washtenaw, and Wayne counties. Using a Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) approach, we partnered with leaders from 15 community-based organizations and health and human service agencies to develop research questions, an interview protocol, and to interpret the data. We used the data analysis software Dedoose (ver 4.12) for inductive coding (IRR=0.81). This study is a part of the NIH Community Engagement Alliance (CEAL) Against COVID-19 initiative. RESULTS/ANTICIPATED RESULTS: Participants described the significant impact of the pandemic in terms of physical and mental health, job security, and the sheer number of deaths among loved ones. They attributed the impact to comorbidities and social determinants of health disparities exacerbated by the pandemic, including income, housing, access to healthcare, as well as systemic racism. They noted being overrepresented among frontline workers with higher exposure to COVID-19, limited or misinformation about the virus, language barriers, and difficulty with social distancing. Cultural norms that promote being in close proximity, such as intergenerational households, and loss of trusted community leaders were also noted. DISCUSSION/SIGNIFICANCE: Findings reflect the needs of Black and Latinx community members in Michigan and the discussions they feel are important to highlight. We must work strategically with partners and the community to provide transparency and effective leadership, and prioritize addressing systemic disparities in SDoH.

Abstract The COVID-19 pandemic has had myriad effects on health and well-being. Contracting the COVID-19 virus and concerns of social and physical consequences during pandemic-related restrictions have been proven to negatively impact health. To better understand possible effects of COVID-19 on Black community-dwelling older adults’ perceived cognitive changes, we conducted a pilot study with 48 community-dwelling African Americans with measures obtained over 24 months from 10/2020 to 10/2022. Participants were recruited from the Wayne State University Institute of Gerontology Healthier Black Elders Center, and Michigan Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center, and the general Detroit Area (Mage=73.07, Range=65-87 years). The Cognitive Change Index (CCI) was used as a self-report measure of perceived change over the last five years. The COVID Impact Survey (CIS) was used to assess the burden of COVID-19 on daily living. To evaluate emotional-being, the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS responses referred to the last month) and the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS, within the last week) were administered. Stepwise regression models showed CIS outcome measures did not predict CCI. GDS outcome measures predicted CCI to some degree (R2adj = .15, p = .008), whereas PSS was the strongest predictor (R2adj = .50, p < .001). Results suggest that for older community-dwelling African Americans, past COVID-19 pandemic experiences did not affect their self-evaluated cognitive changes. Higher levels of self-perceived stress within the last month best predicted their subjective cognitive decline. Future research should involve interventions focused on stress reduction, and clinicians should consider stress level when diagnosing cognitive status in older adults.

Three black spruce plantations in northwestern Ontario, with varied stand densities and site indices were studied to determine lumber properties and yield. Based on visual grading rules, each stand produced at least 87% No. 2 and Better grade lumber. Wane and skip were the 2 most prominent defects causing lumber downgrades. The compliance of visually graded No. 2 and Better lumber with bending modulus of elasticity (MOE) design values for visual grades varied among stands, as did the proportion that qualified as machine stress-rated (MSR) lumber. MOE and Modulus of Rupture (MOR) differed among stands, consistent with differences in MSR yield. The stand with the highest density and the lowest site index produced the highest yield of MSR grade lumber, but not the highest compliance with bending MOE design values. Regardless of the grading scenario, the most productive stand with the largest average tree size produced the highest value per hectare ($28K per ha) under an MSR grading scenario. These results suggest that MSR grading can improve revenues, and that it will be needed to maintain market confidence in the quality of lumber from second-growth black spruce stands. Diseased tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L. cvs. Geronimo, Rebelski, and Big Dena) plants were received for diagnosis from a home gardener in Wayne County, Ohio, in August 2013 and from a 0.14-ha greenhouse in Brown County, Ohio, in September 2013. Approximately 10 and 60% of leaf area was diseased in the home garden and greenhouse, respectively. One or more lesions, each with an indistinct border, were observed on the leaves. Black fungal growth was observed on both sides of the leaf in association with the lesions. Microscopic examination revealed Cercospora-like conidia (2). Three symptomatic leaves from each location were surface-sterilized with 0.5% NaClO for 1 min and cultured on V8 juice agar medium at room temperature under continuous fluorescent lighting. One isolate was selected from each of Wayne Co. (SAM33-13) and Brown Co. (SAM34-13). The fungus produced small, dark-brown colonies within 2 weeks of plating. Mycelium was olive brown and septate, producing fascicles of conidiophores. Conidia were cylindrical, 2 to 14 septate, and 25.8 to 109.7 × 6.5 μm. Genomic DNA was extracted from colonies of isolate SAM33-13 grown on V8 juice agar medium using the Wizard SV Genomic DNA Purification System (Promega, Madison, WI). The internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of rDNA was amplified by PCR using primer pair ITS1 and ITS4 (5), and the purified amplicon was sequenced (OARDC Molecular and Cellular Imaging Center, Wooster, OH). The ITS sequence was 99% identical to those of GenBank accessions of Pseudocercospora fuligena from Korea (JX290079) and Thailand (GU214675). The sequence was deposited in GenBank (KF931141). Based on morphology (4) and sequence analysis, the fungus was identified as P. fuligena (Roldan) Deighton (basionym Cercospora fuligena). To satisfy Koch's postulates, three 4-week-old tomato plants each of the cultivars L390 (AVRDC, Taiwan) and Mountain Spring (Siegers Seed Co., Holland, MI) were sprayed with a suspension of 1 × 103 conidia/ml of isolates SAM33-13 or SAM34-13 prepared from 3-week-old cultures growing on V8 juice agar medium. Three non-inoculated control plants were sprayed with sterilized water. Plants were maintained in a growth chamber at 25 to 30°C, 80% RH, and a 12 h/12 h day/night cycle. The first symptoms appeared 3 weeks after inoculation as light yellow foliar lesions. The lesions enlarged and turned black due to fungal growth, and the infected leaves dried. Disease severity was 70 and 10% of leaf area for cvs. L390 and Mountain Spring, respectively, for each isolate. Non-inoculated control plants were symptomless, and no fungus was re-isolated from the leaves. P. fuligena was isolated from symptomatic leaves of inoculated plants as described above, and the identity was confirmed based on morphology. In the United States, C. fuligena has not been reported infecting tomato since the first report in Florida in 1974 (1). To our knowledge, this is the first report of black leaf mold of tomato caused by P. fuligena in Ohio. Resistant cultivars, crop sanitation, and fungicides are recommended to manage the disease (3). The applications of pavement subdrainage in the state of Indiana are presented. A recent study evaluated pavement subdrainage systems and measured and predicted moisture conditions underneath various types of pavements. Camera systems were used for internal inspection of the edge and geocomposite drains. Pavement instrumentation included moisture blocks, pressure transducers, temperature probes, rain and outflow tipping buckets, and a data acquisition system. Ongoing research using a test site on I-469 at Fort Wayne, Indiana, is aimed at finding the optimum location and layer configuration in flexible pavement; it uses those instruments as well as a TDR system, neutron probes, resistivity probe trees, and an enhanced data acquisition process. The research is a long-term project that will build on the data base of material hydraulic characteristics and performance. Indiana Department of Transportation has formed a committee to address issues related to use of subdrainage. Some of the recommendations from the committee were to abandon geocomposite drains, use bigger concrete protector walls at outlet pipes, and implement a routine inspection and maintenance program for drainage systems.

Abstract Amplification and copy number gains of the 17q23 amplicon are common in breast cancer and neuroblastoma and have been associated with early relapse and poor prognosis (Ganesan et al 2012; Takita et al. 2017). A synthetic lethal interaction of PLK4 with 17q23 amplicon-driven overexpression of TRIM37 was discovered in these tumor types (Meitinger et al. 2020; Yeow et al. 2020). High levels of TRIM37 prevented acentrosomal spindle assembly and rendered cells mitotically vulnerable to inhibition of polo-like kinase 4 (PLK4), a serine/threonine protein kinase that controls centriole duplication. We have discovered that exquisitely selective small molecule inhibitors of PLK4, which are highly selective against the kinome including against the closely related aurora kinases and PLK1-3, display this synthetic lethal interaction with TRIM37, while less selective inhibitors do not. PLK4 protein levels are regulated through proteasomal degradation induced by PLK4 trans-autophosphorylation of the phosphodegron. PLK4 inhibition results in blocked trans-autophosphorylation leading to stabilization of PLK4, thus directly demonstrating target engagement in cells. Importantly, PLK4 protein stabilization correlated with cell viability for selective PLK4 inhibitors but not for less selective compounds, providing a quantifiable pharmacodynamic (PD) association with antitumor activity. Cell viability assessment in cancer cell lines revealed that highly selective PLK4 inhibitors showed greater potency in TRIM37 high cancer cell lines as compared to TRIM37 low cell lines. In contrast, less selective compounds, including from the clinical literature, did not display differential potency in TRIM37 high versus low cancer cell lines. Additionally, selective PLK4 inhibition induced significantly greater apoptosis in TRIM37 high versus low cancer cell lines as measured with a caspase 3/7 assay. We confirmed that only selective PLK4 inhibitors are synthetic lethal with TRIM37 amplification using an engineered cell line system of PLK4 G95L, in which the Leucine mutation blocks compound binding but allows the PLK4 enzyme to function. In cell viability assays, selective PLK4 inhibitors were potent in the parental G95 cells and lost activity in L95 cells, unlike less selective inhibitors whose potency did not depend on PLK4. Oral dosing of a selective PLK4 inhibitor resulted in tumor growth inhibition in TRIM37 high xenograft tumors with no body weight loss. In summary, we have discovered that highly selective small molecule inhibitors of PLK4 confirm the potential of the synthetic lethal impact in treating tumors with high levels of TRIM37. Liquid formulations were applied in 2.0 gal water with a hand held 2.5 gal sprinkling can. Granular formulations were applied with a hand held shaker and mixed with dry Terra-Green top-dressing to facilitate product distribution. At treatment time (3 Sep), the following soil and environmental conditions existed: air temperature, 74°F; soil temperature at 1 inch depth, 84°F; soil temperature at 2 inch depth, 78°F; RH, 45%; amount of thatch, 0.125 inch; soil type, silt loam; soil particle size analysis: 28.5% sand, 59.0% silt, 12.5% clay; soil moisture (oven baked), 20.4%; organic matter, 3.4%; water pH, 6.0; and soil pH, 5.8; and the amount of rainfall recorded until posttreatment counts were made was 0.25 inch. Immediately after treatment, each replicate was irrigated with 0.075 inch of water, and 4 h after treatment the entire experimental area was irrigated with 0.3 inch of water. Posttreatment counts were made 9 DAT (12 Sep). The total number of new freshly constructed green Jun beetle burrows were recorded from each plot (54 ft2).

Abstract The COVID-19 pandemic has created worldwide uncertainty and heightened fear and worry, elevating the potential for anxiety. We examined environmental, sociodemographic, and behavioral risk factors predicting generalized anxiety among older African Americans in a large metropolitan area during the COVID-19 outbreak. Sixty African American participants (92% female) age 65 and older were recruited from the Wayne State University Institute of Gerontology Healthier Black Elders Center. In addition to initial demographic questions, the scale (5-point Likert scale from “Not At All” to “A Great Deal”) assessed a range of everyday concerns, such as time spent indoors; family relationships; economic problems; restricted freedom of movement; and access to food, cleaning supplies, medical care, and personal protective equipment during the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants also completed a brief generalized anxiety screener, GAD-7. Of the 60 participants, 5 reported they were COVID-19 infected and their responses were not used for the analyses. Older Black Americans reported that during the pandemic, they were most affected by: Illness in Family (53%), Death in Family (35%) and Isolation (75%). Significant risk factors for anxiety were: Missing Close Ones, Annoyance, Sense of Safety, Media Coverage, and Time Indoors (explaining 58% of variance). The current study highlights everyday risk factors for anxiety in the context of the coronavirus pandemic among city-dwelling African Americans. Identified factors are common concerns that may be ameliorated with reasonable interventions. More research is needed in order to fully understand the scope and correlates of anxiety during these challenging times.

Abstract This article analyzes the controversy caused in 2017 by US rapper Wiz Khalifa's narco-tour photos in Medellín, Colombia. Narco-tours are day-long excursions through the mobster Pablo Escobar's landmarks in the city: his properties, the neighborhoods he built, and the roof where the police killed him after years of waging war against the Colombian state. Unlike the polemic films and series on the Colombian drug lord, the Wiz Khalifa controversy was the first time an outcry about the depiction of Escobar was aimed at a US Black artist, particularly a rapper. The outraged reaction exhibited by politicians, audiences, and the national media reveal an unexplored archive of exchanges, miscommunications, and negotiations between, on one hand, a long list of hip-hop household names—including Jay-Z, Nas, Kanye West, Lil Wayne, and many others—who have incorporated the image of Escobar in their music, lyrics, aesthetics, and rhetoric and, on the other hand, Colombian institutional memorialization of the war on drugs. The author argues that Wiz Khalifa's pictures exemplify how mainstream hip-hop brings together the images of the Black American “hustler” and the Latin American “narco.” The juxtaposition of these two images is a denunciation of the similar conditions in Colombia and the United States that force people into the trade as well as a complicated and gory representation of the neoliberal ethos Escobar represents. The article concludes by registering how hip-hop's artistic uses of “Pablo”—as Escobar is known in the genre—clash with Colombian elites’ iconoclastic and moralistic stance in opposition to any representation of Escobar in the media.

Abstract Combinations of soil-applied and over-the-top insecticides and insecticide placement and timing were tested in two trials conducted on commercial farms in Lenoir Co. (LC) and Wayne Co. (WC), NC. Plots were 4 rows wide and 0.02 acre in area, separated laterally by a vacant row and on each end by a 16-20 ft turn alley. Treatments were arranged in a randomized complete-block design with 4 replications. Tobacco (K-149, LC; K-326, WC) was transplanted on 19 Apr (LC) and 25 Apr (WC) into a Norfolk sandy loam. Broadcast treatments were applied on 10 Apr (LC) through 8004 flat fan nozzles delivering 21 gal/acre at 20 psi and incorporated immediately by discing twice. Granular band treatments were applied in an 8 inch band using an electrically driven granular applicator and incorporated by bedding over the band. Shanked treatments were applied immediately prior to transplanting into a pre-formed bed which had been leveled to final transplanting height. A narrow (1.5 inch) fertilizer shank placed granules 5 (WC) or 6 (LC) inches below the bed surface in the row center or 5-6 inches below the bed surface and 5 inches to one or both sides of the row center. In the latter treatment, 1/2 rate was delivered to each side. Soils were moist but not wet and above 21°C at the time of all insecticide applications. Transplant water (TW) treatments were made in Lenoir Co. using the farmer's mechanical transplanter delivering 125 and in Wayne Co. by hand applying 130 gal/acre. Over-thetop (OT) sprays were applied through 3 hollow cone nozzles/row at 60 psi delivering 24 gal/acre. These sprays were applied at threshold for the tobacco aphid (10% plants infested) or on 1 or 2 schedules (5, 7, and 10 wk after transplanting or 5, 7, and 9 weeks after transplanting). Plots were checked weekly through the growing season. Flea beetles and flea beetle feeding holes were counted on 10 and 5 plants respectively in each of the 2 center rows of the plot. Aphid infestation was rated on all plants in each plot (0 = no aphids, 1 = 1-9 aphids on most infested leaf, 2 = 10-49 aphids on most infested leaf, 3 = 50-200 aphids, 4 = 200-500 aphids, 5 = 500+ aphids on most infested leaf). Plants rated 3 or above were considered infested in determining thresholds. Data were subjected to analysis of variance and means separated using the Waller-Duncan K-ratio t test.

Abstract Background: Breast cancer survivors have an elevated risk of dying from heart disease, in part due to cardiotoxic cancer treatment, such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Differences in heart disease mortality by race/ethnicity and initial treatment receipt among U.S. breast cancer survivors have not been well described. Methods: We calculated standardized mortality ratios (SMRs; observed/expected) for heart disease among 739,557 first primary breast cancer survivors (diagnosed between 2000-2017; aged 18-84 years; survived 12+ months) in the U.S. Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results 18 registries, compared to the racial/ethnic matched general population. Analyses were examined by race/ethnicity: non-Hispanic White (White), non-Hispanic Black (Black), non-Hispanic/Latina Asian, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders (AANHPI), and Hispanic/Latina (Latina), and initial treatment: surgery only, chemotherapy alone, chemotherapy plus radiotherapy, and radiotherapy alone. SMRs were stratified by stage (localized/regional/distant), age at breast cancer diagnosis (<60, ≥60 years), and estrogen receptor (ER) status (positive/negative). P-heterogeneity was calculated with multivariable adjusted Poisson regression models and likelihood ratio tests. We estimated 10-year cumulative heart disease mortality, accounting for competing risks (i.e., non-heart disease deaths), by race/ethnicity and age at breast cancer diagnosis. Results: SMRs for heart disease mortality among breast cancer survivors varied by race/ethnicity (p-heterogeneity<0.05) and initial treatment; SMRs were elevated for Black and Latina women treated with surgery only and chemotherapy alone (range: 1.15-1.21) and AANHPI women treated with chemotherapy plus radiotherapy (SMR: 1.29, 95%CI: 1.11,1.48), whereas for White women, SMRs were <1.00 for all treatment (range: 0.70-0.96). SMRs were especially high for women with advanced (regional or distant stage) disease among Black women for all treatment (range: 1.15-2.89), and for AANHPI and Latina women treated with chemotherapy only (range: 1.28-3.61). Non-white women diagnosed at age <60 years had higher SMRs, as did Black and AANHPI women diagnosed with ER positive breast cancers. Black women had the highest ten-year cumulative risk of heart disease mortality: age <60 years (Black: 1.78%, 95%CI:1.63%,1.94%) compared to White, AANHPI, and Latina women (all <1%); and age 60+ years: Black (7.92%, 95%CI:7.53%,8.33%) compared to White, AANHPI, and Latina women (range: 3.90%-6.48%). Conclusions: Our findings illuminated striking disparities in heart disease mortality among Black, Latina, and AANHPI breast cancer survivors, especially after initial chemotherapy, and these disparities persisted across clinical characteristics. Future studies are needed to examine racial/ethnic disparities by detailed cancer treatment (including chemotherapy and targeted agents, endocrine therapy, and radiation dose) and lifestyle risk factors. IntroductionRacial disparities in cancer treatment contribute to racial disparities in mortality rates. The quality of patient–physician communication during clinical interactions with black patients and non-black physicians (racially discordant) is poorer than communication quality with white patients (racially concordant). Patient and physician race-related attitudes affect the quality of this communication. These attitudes are likely expressed through subtle non-verbal behaviours, but prior research has not examined these behaviours. Nonverbal synchrony, the coordination of physical movement, reflects the preinteraction attitudes of participants in interactions and predicts their postinteraction perceptions of and affect towards one another. In this study, peer reviewed and funded by the National Institute of Minority Health and Health Disparities (R21MD011766), we will investigate non-verbal synchrony in racially concordant and discordant interactions to better understand racial disparities in clinical communication. Methods and analysisThis secondary analysis includes racially concordant (n=163) and racially discordant (n=68) video-recorded oncology interactions, patient and oncologist self-reported race-related attitudes, perceptions of the interaction and observer ratings of physician patient-centred communication and patient and physician affect and rapport. In aim 1, we will assess and compare non-verbal synchrony between physicians and patients in racially concordant and discordant interactions. In aim 2, we will determine the influence of non-verbal synchrony on patient and physician affect and communication. In aim 3, we will examine possible causes (ie, race-related attitudes) and consequences (ie, negative perceptions) of non-verbal synchrony in racially discordant interactions. In aim 4, we will develop and test a mediational model linking physician and patient race-related attitudes to non-verbal synchrony and, in turn, interaction outcomes.Ethics and disseminationThe parent and current studies were approved by the Wayne State University Institutional Review Board. Since only archival data will be used, ethical or safety risks are low. We will disseminate our findings to relevant conferences and journals.

Abstract Neighborhood features have been shown to influence breast cancer risk and outcomes, but there is a lack of molecular data in this area. Our study seeks to investigate whether neighborhood deprivation factors such as employment, housing, poverty, residential stability, and residential segregation by race/ethnicity may influence the presence of inflammation in the breast, scored as crown-like structures of the breast (CLS-B). We hypothesize that high deprivation leads to an increase in inflammatory processes that promote a pro-inflammatory immune microenvironment, including CLS-B presence and the activation of cancer-related pathways, especially for Black women who often experience more aggressive tumors and worse breast cancer outcomes. Our study included 104 normal samples from reduction mammoplasty (63 Black, 41 White) and 114 tumor adjacent normal tissues (73 Black, 41 White) from the NCI-MD Breast Cancer Study. All participants completed a detailed questionnaire to capture breast cancer risk factors of interest and demographic characteristics. Tract-level socioeconomic deprivation was measured using a neighborhood deprivation index (NDI). Tissue samples underwent immunohistochemical staining for the pan-macrophage marker, CD68, in order to detect CLS-B. Pathologists used an artificial intelligence-assisted approach to score CLS-B for whole slide images. Preliminary findings in a subset of 36 participants indicate a positive association between presence of CLS-B and increased NDI scores in a linear regression model adjusted for age (b=1.29, p=0.28). This preliminary work provides an initial link between neighborhood environment and inflammatory markers within breast tissue. On-going efforts are focused on expanding our sample size to further bolster these findings, supporting future mechanistic investigations. Citation Format: Wayne Lawrence, Petra H. The primary source of water in pavements is from surface infiltration. Water from surface infiltration and other sources increases pavement maintenance costs and shortens pavement life. These effects can be mitigated by including a subdrainage system in the pavement design. A study of pavement subdrainage systems has been conducted that included a phase for laboratory tests for the hydraulic characteristics of materials used in three test sections built on I-469 at Fort Wayne, Indiana. The purpose of building these test sections was to evaluate the subdrainage performance and materials used in the sections. The sections differ in the permeable drainage layer as well as the filter (separation) layer. The sections were instrumented with different types of sensors. Instrumentation installed in the sections included time domain reflectometry (TDR) probes, moisture suction blocks, temperature probes, resistivity tree, and rainfall and outflow tipping buckets. Other features of the instrumentation site included an air temperature probe and access tube for a nuclear moisture content probe. The laboratory hydraulic characteristic test results on the materials are presented. Field moisture condition in the layers is also presented. Calibration equations for the TDR are developed for the field materials. A summary of three rainfall events and pavement outflow volumes recorded for the tests is presented. Recommendations are made for materials to be used in subdrainage systems.

Harriet Jacobs'sIncidents in the Life of a Slave Girlwas edited and introduced to its antebellum reading public in 1861 by the white abolitionist Lydia Marie Child. Nearly a century and a half later, another Lydia once again brings Jacobs's story to the public attention asHarriet Jacobs, a stage play by critically acclaimed African American playwright Lydia R. Diamond. Chicago's Steppenwolf Theatre commissioned and debuted the play in 2008 as part of its youth program. Regarded as Diamond's best work, the play ends with Jacobs, recently liberated from her hiding space of seven years, declaring to the audience, “But it was above Grandmother's shed, in the cold and dark, in the heat and solitude, that I found my voice.” This aspirational claim to an unshackled black girl voice reverberates a twenty-first-century renewal of black women artists, scholars, and activists committed to recovering, proclaiming, and celebrating black girls. With subsequent back-to-back productions in 2010 by the Underground Railway Theater and Kansas City Repertory Theatre (KCRep), the play heralds the millennial energy of both the 2013 #blackgirlmagic social-media campaign and the 2014 formation of black girlhood studies (BGS), an academic field that prioritizes “a rigorous commitment to locating the voices of black girls,” and elucidating the “local” intersections of race, gender, and other areas in which “black girls’ agency comes into view.” It is precisely this energetic recovery of a black girl voice on the contemporary stage—a Harriet for the new millennial—that makesHarriet Jacobsso attractive. Describing her vision for the KCRep production, director Jessica Thebus stated: “Our task as I see it, today, is to tell the story with the clarity and energy of Harriet Jacobs's voice with her humor, with her intellect, and consciousness.” And promoting Wayne State's 2017 production, Dale Dorlin writes:For director Billicia Charnelle Hines, Harriet Jacobs is not a slave play, but a prime example of a heroine's journey. “This is an adventure story,” says Hines, “about a heroine who, no matter what, was determined to be free. That's someone I look up to. … I want people to think of her as a hero.”Hines's focus on the hero and adventure genre echoes the comments of Hallie Gordon, director of the original Steppenwolf production, which located the play within another genre of Western subject formation, the bildungsroman; for Gordon, “Harriet Jacobsis about the strength of this one girl who turns into a woman in front of our very eyes.” Critic Nancy Churnin, lauding the play's accessible rendering of a young female who finds in dismal confinement not only freedom but her voice, titled her 2016 review of the Dallas-based African American Repertory Theater's production, “A Slave Tale with Echoes of Anne Frank.” Resonant with Diamond's own desire for “Harriet Jacobs … to exist, theatrically, alongside Anne Frank and Joan of Arc,” Churnin's title presumably refers toThe Diary of Anne Frank,Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett's 1955 stage adaptation of Anne Frank'sDiary of a Young Girl(first performed at the Cort Theatre on Broadway). Still, considering that Jacobs lived well before Frank, the comparison is curious. Reflected in that curiousness is something of the irony of lauding a portrait of historical black girlhood that obscures the minor complexities of a “slave tale” or “slave play.” The comparison effectively fits the black girl into a role of heroic girl power shaped by a history of white girlhood, in which the slave girl, coming too early, can be imagined only anachronistically at best.
