After Adi Shankara, Sree Narayana Guru was the greatest spiritual philosopher Kerala has ever produced. He offered a way of life that was both materialistic and spiritually balanced. Through his philosophical writings, he imparts knowledge on how to uphold a dialectical union of the conceptual and the practical manner of living. The predominant and best-known school of Indian philosophy, Advaita Vedanta, espouses the unchanging non-dualism between the Universal Soul and the Individual Soul. Narayana Guru dedicated his entire life to demonstrating to the world that Advaita may be put into practice and acknowledges Advaita as the philosophical foundation for man’s practical concerns in the world. The key distinction between the Advaita systems of Sankara and Narayana Guru is how they are used in the real world. Advaita Vedanta was synthesized by Narayana Guru. Narayana Guru combined the theistic Vedic practice of love and service with the Advaita Vedanta notion of Brahman’s oneness (ekatma vada). Through his works, Narayana Guru spread the holy message to all people and encouraged them to embrace timeless truths and aspirations. This essay attempts to examine a few of Narayana Guru’s writings in order to examine how the Advaita philosophy affected him and how he saw Advaita. This study uses the historical research method, and its conclusions show that Advaita philosophy directly influences both the religious teachings he imparts and the motivations for his socio-religious conduct.

This piece of writing highlights that in an argumentative essay, also known as a persuasive essay, the writer’s purpose is to persuade the audience to agree with his or her ideas about a controversial topic. As such, that essay needs to be based on logic and not on emotion, and must include an opposing viewpoint or counter argument, which gives credibility and strength to it. This paper aims at exploring the best practices in academic writing by making suggestions for argumentative essay writing instructions at both high school and university levels. This work is of particular relevance because both students and professionals need to know how to write. I have conducted this study by collecting some argumentative essays from participants of academic writing courses organized by the American Center of Dakar in Senegal. The research findings show that this analysis will help users enhance their writing skills, be proficient in academic exams and tests with a view to becoming autonomous learners and workers.

Academic writing is regularly criticized for its obscure and turgid prose, for its over-theoretical approach, and its reliance on jargon. In this essay, I suggest researchers and writers, especially qualitative inquirers, should move toward a more open and accessible style of “post-academic” writing. Put simply, post-academic writing is human writing for human readers and is at its best when it takes on a storytelling form. The essay features discussion of seven ways of becoming post-academic writers.

Essay titles are important (de)motivating factors that have an immense influence on the quality of students’ writing. The article focuses on two questionnaires aimed at students of English, and at lecturers teaching, writing skills at the Department of English at the Faculty of Arts in Ljubljana. Both groups of respondents were asked to consider a list of essay titles taken from various authentic sources, deciding whether, to what extent, and under what circumstances they found them suitable. In addition, the respondents were asked to paraphrase each title in their own words to convey their interpretation and understanding of a particular title. The results and conclusions arrived at by means of the questionnaires are presented and compared to my prior expectations, stemming primarily from my teaching experience. The topic is also discussed in the light of what experts on essay writing say about essay titles.

This paper reports on a study about the rhetoric, metacognitive, and cognitive strategies pre-service teachers use before and after a process-based writing intervention when completing an argumentative essay. The data were collected through two think-aloud protocols while 21 Chilean English as a foreign language pre-service teachers completed an essay task. The findings show that strategies such as summarizing, reaffirming, and selecting ideas were only evidenced during the post intervention essay, without the use of communication and socio-affective strategies in either of the two essays. All in all, a process-based writing intervention does not only influence the number of times a strategy is used, but also the number of students who employs strategies when writing an essay—two key considerations for the devising of any writing program.

The English writing ability of Mexican-American and Puerto Rican college candidates taking the College Board's English Composition Test (ECT) in December 1979 was studied. Mexican-American and Puerto Rican candidates were partitioned into groups indicating that English was the best language or else groups indicating that English was not the best language. The performances of three groups on essay portions and multiple-choice portions of the ECT were compared with each other and with performance on the same measures by December 1979 ECT test takers as a whole. The results of the various analyses indicated that the ECT essay writing ability of Hispanics tended to be overestimated by the indirect, multiple-choice ECT assessment of writing skills. However, evidence emerged that some Hispanics who score high on the ECT essay writing task and who judge that Spanish is their best language may have their ECT essay writing skills underestimated by the ECT indirect measure of writing skills. Further research is needed, clarifying the generality of these findings, their linguistic basis, and their implications for college placement.

Undergraduate nursing students often find essay writing challenging, and feel underprepared, yet the impact of using online feedback to support essay writing has been underexplored. First-year nursing students from a regional university were involved in a project that encouraged them to access an online tutoring service, as part of their development of an essay task. Significant differences were found in students’ final essay marks for those who accessed the online writing support. Students who accessed online writing support were also more likely to be deep, rather than surface learners. The findings indicate that the provision of prompt or ‘just in time’ feedback, using an online feedback mechanism, can greatly enhance students’ essay writing performance.

In an effort to connect women’s spiritual development to the general call for professors to reconnect significantly with their students, this dissertation argues that expressive writing should remain a staple of the composition curriculum. It suggests that the uses of expressive writing should be expanded and explored by students and professors of composition and that each should become familiar with the link between writing and emotional wellness. In cancer centers, schools of medicine, and pregnancy care centers, writing is being used as a tool of therapy. More than just a technique for helping people cope with the stresses of loss, pain, and abuse, teaching personal writing techniques enables writers to transfer their skill in writing narratives to other forms of writing, including the more traditional academic essay. By presenting interdisciplinary blending of composition and performance studies, the discussion introduces contemporary tools of writing that engage digital environments and digital storytelling techniques already familiar to students. An important highlight of the research, that allowing students to treat personal themes in the writing classroom boosts students’ overall academic performance, is a discussion relevant to professors outside of the English department. Spurred by the public health calls for intervention in the HIV and HPV spread on minority, tribal, and HBCU campuses, the essay also considers the appropriateness of offering the Life-Support Class (a mainstay of Pregnancy Care Centers) in campus clinics. The subject of emotion is treated in the essay in relation to women’s relationships on campus and the evasion and stigmatization of emotion among professors in the academic setting. Further, the essay highlights research which suggests that a fear of feminist retaliation interferes with campus psychologists’ recommendations for the best outcomes for sexual health. This dissertation follows the trend of feminist research methodology by explicitly exposing the author’s hopes and goals, which connect women’s spiritual formation to expressive writing.

This chapter presents a case study of how the UCLA Extension Writers’ Program, which is America’s largest continuing education provider of online creative writing and screenwriting courses and services, offers individualized feedback and mentoring to 1,000’s of aspiring and practicing writers worldwide. Writing creatively is singularly private and can be isolating; the Writers’ Program’s 220 annually-offered online courses in fiction writing, memoir, personal essay, children’s literature, playwriting, poetry, publishing, feature film writing, and television writing provide access to in-depth instructor/student, student/student, and student/advisor relationships designed to help meet individual writing goals. Writing education is particularly well-suited for online delivery because writers write: students submit their work in writing; the teacher and fellow students give their feedback in writing. For students, the act of learning to write online reinforces their accountability to create in a disciplined way and allows time to absorb and respond to critiques with reflection. For teachers, e-mentoring requires unusual rigor and preciseness in order to give thoughtful feedback on each piece of creative work, and the 80 professional writers who teach the Writers’ Program online courses employ a range of pedagogical strategies to do so. In addition, the Writers’ Program provides personalized guidance and advice on writing online through its student advisors as well as an array of services, including one-on-one manuscript and script consultations; feature film mentorships for which students sign up monthly and receive “on demand” guidance on their projects; and a first-of-its-kind course limited to six advanced students in which they hold virtual internships at production companies and studios as script readers. The chapter begins with an overview of UCLA Extension and the Writers’ Program’s history, mission, products, services, and managerial structure, and then describes the origins and current status of the Writers’ Program’s online curriculum and educational services. The ways in which writing education comprises a near-perfect match for a virtual delivery system are explored, followed by a discussion of what makes Writers’ Program’s products and services uniquely suited to deliver e-mentoring for a global, mostly post-baccalaureate student body who puts a high premium on results and quality of interaction. The chapter next outlines how clear expectations, course design, lectures and critiquing guidelines ensure successful response to creative work (instructor/student and student/peers), and then focuses on “best practices” techniques and strategies that online Writers’ Program instructors use to shape and deliver critiques, including a common critiquing vocabulary and methodology, use of technological tools to provide sustained, personalized feedback, and ways to cultivate the individual writer’s sense of place in the global literary and entertainment communities. The chapter concludes by addressing technological, pedagogical, and economic challenges and future directions of e-mentoring aspiring creative writers and screenwriters.

Max Brod was one of the most influential figures of the modernist literary scene in Prague, as well as its most important chronicler and promoter. Best remembered today for his role in preserving and editing the work of his close friend Franz Kafka, Brod was himself a writer of extraordinary breadth and output. Among the most prolific German-language critics and authors of the twentieth century, he published hundreds of essays and works of criticism over the course of his life, along with a range of other publications that included novels, biographies, memoirs and translations. Brod was a leading public intellectual in interwar Czechoslovakia and later in Israel, where he emigrated in 1939, and he also wrote extensively on Judaism and Zionism. Brod grew up in an acculturated German-speaking Jewish household in Prague. He studied law at Prague University and there befriended Kafka, a fellow student. After earning his law degree in 1907, Brod went on to work in a series of administrative positions for the postal service, while at the same time fully devoting himself to writing. Through these efforts he became close to other Jewish Prague writers of the same generation, including Kafka, Oskar Baum, Felix Weltsch, and Franz Werfel. Brod would later term this group of friends the ‘Prague Circle’ in his eponymous memoir Der Prager Kreis (1966), and he was instrumental in promoting them as emerging modernist authors.

To grasp the complexity of the affects and ‘messages’ generated by the installation works, the chapter draws on ‘ecology of mind’ principles, as best represented by the writing of Gregory Bateson and Vannevar Bush.

While the context of the personal statement is highly specific, the best practices for professional writing remain key components for production of a compelling personal statement. This chapter provides practical advice for working with students on crafting and editing their essays. In addition, the chapter provides insights into why applicants can find writing these essays so traumatizing. Students often get caught up in comparing themselves with other individuals applying to professional health programs. Chris Hopkins focuses on how wartime participation in the Wrens was represented during and immediately after the war by exploring the written forms in which Wrens were characterized and how these forms were put into the wider context of wartime popular writing about servicemen and particularly about the Royal Navy. Writing about women’s service experience has not yet been adequately studied, though a significant number of women took part. The essay deals with some of the documentary writing that forms a rich context for the only wartime novel written by a servicewoman about the Wrens, Edith Pargeter's She Goes to War (1942), a Naval fiction/documentary unexpectedly engaging with the agenda of the People's War. The essay argues that this neglected writing tells a significant story about women in war-time Britain and as such is important for understanding the experience of servicewomen, opening debates about society, gender and class.

This work was conducted in the framework of Viable Cites, which is a national strategic innovation program in Sweden with a focus on the change towards climate-neutral and sustainable cities. Viable Cities is catalyst for new ways of collaboration between cities, industry, academia, research institutes and the civil society. The overall goal is to provide support to the cities to convert to a way in line with national and international climate goals. The work described in this paper was one project within this framework. The project consisted of the City of Enköping, RISE Research Institute of Sweden and Europan with is an Pan-European architect organization witch organise a biennial competition for young architects. As a part of this project, a collaboration was conducted together with Westerlundska gymnasiet, a high school in Enköping. The overall goal was to engage young people, and to get their ideas about how to achieve a sustainable environment and to develop sustainable products and services. It is this group that both will be forced to handle the decisions that are made today, and they are also the generation that knows best how the want to live their lives in the future. The aim with this work was both to get ideas and suggestions from high school students about how they wanted their future city to be designed, and to explore how high school students could apply and use the method “Design Fiction” when conducting work with designing future cities.According to Bleeker (2009), Design Fiction is a mix of science fact, design and science fiction. It combines the traditions of writing and story telling with the material crafting of objects. It is a creative process that encourages human imagination and give support in telling stories that provoke and raise questions (Bleeker, 2009). Design Fiction is a method to explore future possible scenarios or contexts. A concept could be described in several ways by using narratives and prototypes. The story can be told and the concept can be visualized in many different ways (Wakkary et al, 2013).In the project there were about 20 students from the school’s technology program. They had all chosen architecture as their special focus during their last year. While Thematic Coherence is a fundamental aspect of essay writing, scoring it is labor-intensive. This issue is often addressed using machine learning algorithms to estimate the score. However, related work is mostly limited to the English language or argumentative essays. Consequently, there is a lack of research on other widely used languages and essay types, such as Brazilian Portuguese and narrative essays. Hence, this paper reports on the findings of a study that aimed to evaluate the value of machine learning algorithms to automatically score the Thematic Coherence of both narratives (n = 400) and argumentative (n = 6567) essays written in Brazilian Portuguese. Expanding on previous studies, this paper evaluated regression models using conventional, feature-based algorithms according to essays’ linguistic features. Overall, we found that Extra Trees was the best performing algorithm, yielding predictions with moderate to strong correlations with human-generated scores. Mainly, those findings expand the literature with evidence on the potential of machine learning to estimate the Thematic Coherence of narrative and argumentative essays, suggest an improved performance for the former type.

Automated Calibration procedures are used commonly to perform complex calibrations in a cost effective manner. Automated calibration procedures when adopted, improve the efficiency of a calibration lab and also improve the quality of service provided. There are a number of software tools available in the market today that provides mechanisms for writing automated calibration procedures and these calibration procedures may be written by 3rd party software vendors or subcontractors for the lab. Adoption of automated calibration procedures for laboratory use requires the validation of the software to ensure accuracy and efficiency. This paper describes some of strategies and practices around validating automated software for measurement. This paper goes into some of the common testing methodologies that can be adopted to ensure that the software is adhering to measurement method that was described in the calibration procedure. This paper also touches on the need for configuration management and version control of the automated software updates for traceability and quality standards.

Abstract Annular Frac operations performed with Coiled Tubing (CT) offer many advantages for unconventional completions, particularly wells with long laterals and many pay zones (frequently in excess of 100 stages). The primary disadvantage to annular frac is erosion of the coiled tubing due to impinged, high pressure fluids containing abrasive frac sand. This paper will describe a methodology to detect erosion of the CT to provide consistent, reliable operations. When designing equipment and writing operational procedures to detect erosion in annular frac through coiled tubing, the following considerations may be considered: CT string design and pumped fluid flow rate when fracturing. From a CT service company perspective, the fluid dynamics of the pumped fluid may contain uncontrolled variables such as fluid density, viscosity, and slurry from job-to-job. As a result of the limitations noted above, the onset of erosion may be difficult to predict. However non-destructive electromagnetic inspection can be utilized to highlight possible locations of erosion within CT strings to develop "field-tested" guidelines for pumping against tubing size. Electromagnetic inspection using Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL) and/or Hall Effect Sensors can highlight localized variations in wall thickness. However, this information alone does not give a clear indication if the tubing has been damaged by erosion without a baseline inspection to compare to, since there can be variations in wall due to the CT manufacturing process and the prevalence of tapered CT string designs. If the CT string is inspected either when new or very early on in its life, a comparison of wall variation by electromagnetic methods can "rule out" wall thickness variations that were present at the time of manufacturing. Evaluation of CT strings with electromagnetic inspections performed when new and after retirement will be presented in this paper. The inspection results will then be supplemented by pumping parameters from annular frac jobs performed with these strings. This paper describes a methodology of verifying that CT strings have not been subject to erosion due to annular frac operations. An exploration of pumping rates used on these strings in operations also provides some "field-tested" practical guidelines for avoiding erosion when performing annular frac jobs.

Purpose - Empirically, the act of tipping in the global services industry is as ancient as the Roman times. It can be traced back to centuries ago, although the area has attracted less attention in research. Nonetheless, gratuities contributes immensely on the economic wellbeing of servers. This paper therefore presents an investigation into applicable constructs triggering gratuities within the hotel food service departments including; rewarding service perceptions, incentives for improved future service and social norms. Thus, the purpose of this study was to establish the contribution of each construct under investigation on restaurant tipping in the selected two and three star hotels within Kisumu County. Design - The study applied a descriptive research survey design. This design was chosen based on its suitability for describing gratuities based on responses from the selected respondents within two and three star hotels. Methodology - The study was carried out within Kisumu County, in Kenya. A census of two- and threestar hotels was taken, while questionnaires were self-administered to 384 respondents who were selected by simple random sampling method. Data was organized by skillfully coding and cleaning in order to correct any potential errors and thereafter fed into spreadsheets. The data was further transformed for purposes of conducting specific analysis. Statistical Packages for Social Sciences-Analysis of Moment Structures (SPSS-AMOS) was applied. The study respondents were assured confidentiality, privacy and anonymity in addition to the data collection tools being destroyed after report writing. Approach - The study was carried out in nine hotels within Kisumu County, among which one hotel was selected for pre-testing. On the other hand, respondents constituted food service clients and managers. Questionnaires and content analysis were used in the collection of data. Reliability was determined by Cronbach’s coefficient Alpha test (> 0.70) while content validity was used to assess the internal validity of the research instruments. Findings - The study results gave factor loadings ˃ 0.70 which indicates that the factors under investigation extracts sufficient variance from the dependent variables. Further, the study results show that alcohol consumption gave the highest prediction (91.2%) and thus unique contribution to the independent variable. Finally, the study established a positive significant relationship (at 95% confidence level) between superior service, frequency of patronage, alcohol consumption as well as weather and gratuity. Originality of the research - The act of giving gratuities is prevalent across the global hospitality environment, with a myriad of economic importance to the industry. However, very minimal studies have been carried out, though not related to this study. Most of previous studies are on the service quality-tipping relationship, while this study focused on tipping-service quality relationship. Therefore in the best of our knowledge, no similar study has ever been carried out, and thus this is a unique and original study that has addressed the topic.

The California State Rail Plan (CSRP) is among the best rail plan documents published by any jurisdiction in the United States to date. As such, the CSRP is used in this paper as the basis of comparison to other state rail service plans. These plans will have been submitted to the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) on record as of June 2020—as required under Section 303 of the Passenger Rail Investment and Improvement Act (PRIIA) of 2008. The purpose of this paper is to identify the best practices and gaps that may inform California and other states in their future rail service plan development. This paper is grounded in the realization that, while the general outline of FRA requirements is uniform for all states, the actual content and inclusion of these requirements in the myriad state plans varies greatly. For example, California was granted an exception to help update FRA Rail Plan Guidance for its 2018 Rail Plan, other states have complained that FRA guidance and requirements on rail service planning have put state rail agencies in the position of constantly writing plans with little or no time to implement them. Throughout this research, the authors identify all the elements of FRA guidelines as reflected in the CSRP and rail plans of other states. This report also identifies the best features and planning strategies that may inform and improve the state rail planning process going forward, steps that will positively contribute to the public benefit of enhanced rail systems.
