The purpose of this work is to show a possibility of reading of Berkeley em Bellagio (2002), a novel by João Gilberto Noll, from the topic “locations”, that can be configured as: geographic, explicit in the title of the novel, and what the implicates the transit, interpreted as situations of exile – including the insílio (internal exile) and desexílio (the returning movement of the exiled); the loci of the writer`s enunciation under the aspects of finding his insertion and identity cartography in the postmodern world, as a Latin American intellectual, in the controversial relationship between center and periphery.

In Berkeleys system named immaterialism the material substance is rejected, existing only two kinds of beings: those who perceive (spirits) and those who are perceived (ideas). Sensible objects do not have any existence beyond that given by the act of perception. Therefore, says the author, to be is to be perceived (esse est percipi), and all that is known are the qualities revealed during the process of sensible perception. However, this statement seems to lead toward a very peculiar form of relativism, an individualistic subjectivism that entails great problems. In his two most important works: A Treatise Concerning the Principles of Human Knowledge and Three Dialogues between Hylas and Philonous, Berkeley make several allusions to the relativity of the sensible qualities. Henceforth, the perceived qualities of each object are different according to the individuals. However, the opinion of the commentators differs about the relevance the Berkeley assigns to those relativistic references. Therefore, the purpose of the present work is to try to offer a possible solution to the problem of the relativistic references in Berkeleys immaterialism. We intend to investigate, in the course of the four subsequent chapters, each approaching a relevant aspect in the relation between relativism and Berkeleys theory, how is it possible for the philosopher to conciliate those two positions, maintaining intact the possibility of objective knowledge about the world and the agreement he claims to have with the common sense.

This thesis is a study of the Berkeley family through five generations from 1281 to 1417 and attempts to study in depth all the aspects of their lives for which material is available. This is far more abundant for the Berkeley family than for many others in a similar position in the late middle ages which makes them a suitable subject for such study. The first lord in the series is Thomas II (lord 1281-1321) who had a personal association with Edward I manifested in his close involvement in all the most important events of the reign. He virtually retired from active public life during the reign of Edward II and his heir, Maurice III (1321-26), took over as representative of the family. He benefited from the lordship of the earl of Pembroke which brought him several important posts between 1312 and 1318, but he then broke with Pembroke to join the Marcher opposition to the king. He was one of the leaders of the rebels in the Despenser War of 1321-2 and spent the rest of his life imprisoned at Wallingford. His son, Thomas III (1326-61), was married to Mortimer's daughter and consequently played an important role during the Mortimer regime, but suffered an eclipse during the 1330s while undergoing his parliamentary trial for the death of Edward II. He re-emerged onto the national stage in the 1340s but was principally concerned with domestic and estate matters. His heir, Maurice IV (1361-68) was retained by the Black Prince and was wounded and captured while in the Prince's service at Poitiers. The wound made him an invalid for the rest of his life and he was further hampered by the burden of paying off his ransom. His son Thomas IV (1368-1417) was a minor until 1374 and then was severely restricted financially by the claims on the estate of two long-lived dowagers until 1390. This was to ascertain extent mitigated by the fortuitous inheritence by his wife of the Lisle estate but he played no important role in the affairs of Richard II's reign. He was prominent, however, in the establishment of Henry IV in 1399 and was a Privy Councillor of that king until 1406 when he appears to have been dropped when Prince Henry's influence at court became important. These activities at court were influenced principally by the lords' personal associations with the current ruler and in normal circumstances they did, not have the status consonant with the right to involvement in affairs of the highest importance. They were, however, at the highest end of the peerage since their income rose to almost comital size and this position was enhanced by marriage alliances with other peerage families of similar high incomes and long establishment. The daughters of the family, however, occasionally married men of lesser status. Portions, jointures and dowers were distributed and received in conformity with the general rules governing such matters but the most prominent and important of their family relations was the loyalty shown by the cadets to Gloucestershire and the main line. This was occasionally of particular importance, such as the alliance between Thomas III and his courtier brother, Maurice (of Stoke Giffard), but was at all times a source of great strength to the lords whose influence in their "country" was thereby greatly extended. A second major factor in the Berkeley lords' dominance of their "country" (which appears to have been, in most respects, the county of Gloucestershire) was the concentration of their estate in that area. This was improved by the acquisition of new lands in the same area and although most of these lands were subsequently granted to younger sons, these cadet branches only served to strengthen the lords' position further. The income derived from that part of the estate which descended with the main line rose from around £900 per annum in the late 13th century to £1,150 per annum by 1360 but on occasions it was considerably higher than this, notably after the Lisle lands came to Thomas IV in 1382 and 1392. Although the, lords' resources, and their ability to concentrate all of them on the one area, was an important element of their influence in the county, a more important factor, perhaps, was the lack of any serious rivals within Gloucestershire. This enabled the Berkeleys to have what amounted to almost a monopoly of lordship and a great deal of influence over appointments to local offices. Their increasing stature is reflected in the changing methods they adopted to impose their will in the area, these growing in sophistication over the period. Their lordship was reciprocated-by the members of their affinity who assisted and supported them in their various endeavours. Detailed study of the manor of Ham (the largest of those making up the honour of Berkeley) showed that there was a huge increase in the number of tenements held by free tenants, and in the rents paid by them, under the lordship of Thomas II. He also cut down the number of villein tenements, the profit from which was restricted by custom, but the principal change in this respect occured after the Black Death when many tenements came to be "held freely" for a greatly increased cash rent. The adverse effects of the Black Death were quickly corrected in the short term but long term effects are apparent in the static nature of the rent-roll from 1360. The use and type of labour changed over the period since Thomas II was content to have a smaller number of famuli and make greater use of villein labour services, while Thomas III used much of the villein labour obligation to support famuli (thus increasing the numbers employed) and making up the deficit with casual labour. Most of the stock on the manor were draught animals and, although many went to the household, sale became more important after 1360 as policy changed it into more of a "cash" manor. There was a large demesne which produced great quantities of wheat and oats and smaller quantities of beans, most of which went to the household. The lords' followed most of the agricultural techniques advised in the treatises but on matters not covered by them, the local wisdom which predominated was not as helpful as it could have been.

Promoted as state-of-the-art desegregation devices, educational parks were large campus-like schools designed and sited to draw students from many neighborhoods. In the mid-1960s, the educational park movement featured prominently in debates about race and education in the United States, winning the support of numerous influential individuals and organizations, yet today the educational park movement is nearly forgotten, akin to a wave that swelled, crested, and crashed, leaving only a muddy wash. How could so many thoughtful and energetic people—1960s educational park advocates—work so hard yet achieve so little? This question can only be answered by reference to a wide-ranging 1960s debate about the appropriate role of the federal government in public education, a debate during which educational parks became emblematic of a federal government intent on remaking public schools to advance its own socially progressive ends. Whereas advocates for an expanded federal role in public education portrayed educational parks as cutting-edge alternatives to outdated and inequitable neighborhood schools, opponents of federalism in education presented the parks as staging areas for federal invasions of old-line school districts. In the end it was the latter vision—with its scenes of federal officials revising textbooks and drawing up lesson plans—that won the day, transforming educational parks into menacing symbols of federal overreach.

This thesis is concerned with a critical review of the music of Lennox Berkeley. It highlights features of Berkeley's compositional aesthetic that have hitherto remained elusive, in particular his use of sonata-form syntax and re-engagement with tonality. The premise is to show that Berkeley, despite his modest and self-deprecating temperament, acquired a secure and confident technique and developed a highly intricate and original compositional style. This style has its roots in neoclassical aesthetics and much French music of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and never really outgrows its profoundly tonal basis. The thesis begins with an extended contextual discussion of Berkeley's aesthetic, and continues by exploring the development of his style through analysis of specific compositions in chapters selectively covering his entire output by genre. This discussion includes extended analyses of the First and Third Symphonies, the operas Ruth and A Dinner Engagement, and chapters covering the choral music and song cycles. Wider issues relating to the impact of the war years on Berkeley's work, and his relationship with important figures such as Britten and Boulanger, are brought into consideration. The overall aim is to highlight the technical processes and aesthetic of a unique composer who is also an important case study within English music of the twentieth century.

In A Treatise Concerning the Principles of Human Knowledge published in 1710, George Berkeley realizes a philosophy of the mind, the idea and the language through the point of view of the immateriality of the reality perceived by man, explained by a theory of knowledge based on the perceptive totality understood as the mind, the spirit or the perceiver. Historically, the issue of the inexistence of matter as a being external to the mind, inert and independent from the perceiver, interpreted in a rigid empirical philosophic context, is the core of the debate offered by Berkeley to the philosophy of Locke. Overpassing the limits of his century, Berkeley\'s point of view, articulated on important philosophical currents such as Kant\'s idealism and the philosophy of language of Wittgenstein, could not be ignored anymore in any debate about the theory of knowledge posterior to that time. In spite of ncompassing in its core the problematic of the intrinsic fissure of the dualism of thought, Berkeley\'s philosophy is still able to feed and enlighten the nature of the device of this fissure, which deletion is denounced by Habermas at the end of the twentieth century, but which starting point seems to have been established by the remote inheritance of Anaxagoras which involves the reiteration of existential radicalism in the spirit, core point of Berkeley\'s philosophy.

Recent philosophers assess differently the extent to which affinity is to be found between the idealist metaphysics of G. W. Leibniz and George Berkeley. I argue that these figures’ idealisms are indeed strongly aligned. They espouse related accounts of the nature of mental substance and state. They similarly restrict the domain of causality. They each reject the Lockean primary/secondary quality dichotomy. Over against the criticism that idealisms cannot allow for a distinction to be made out between real and illusory perceptual experience, the two philosophers offer comparable solutions. Nevertheless, their ontologies are not identical, and are primarily to be distinguished in terms of their disparate characterisations of ultimate reality as being either immanent or transcendent to percipient subjects like us. This continuum of transcendentism and immanentism has further application as a conceptual tool both for tracing the rise of modern philosophy and for developing new metaphysical and epistemological accounts of the nature of the world and our relation to it.

Abstract: The aim of this thesis is to establish a study of how Berkeley devised mathematical objects. It is of interest to know whether there is, in his thinking, a unit in the criterion of intelligibility of these objects. To do this, we try to reconstruct some of his arguments about what he considers as legitimate objects, not only in arithmetic, algebra and geometry, but also in the infinitesimal calculus. From this, the interpretive consequences of his maturity texts are evaluated - such as the text The Analyst (1734), which is known for the criticism of the infinitesimal calculus - on whether there is primacy of such objects in the process of evaluating the scientific character of mathematics. Therefore, we don¿t want to adopt as an entrance the more general question of what is mathematical science, to Berkeley, but the question of how the notion of mathematical object is presented, or not, as one of the important elements to enlighten this more general problem

This research is about the Works of George Berkeley, an Irish Writer (1685?1759). It aims at showing that Berkeley, when he tries to invalidate the notion of Material Substance, with his system, Immaterialism, finds out that human liberty is a problem, and our thesis shows that this liberty, because of internal reasons, in Berkeley's system, proves to be impossible. Indeed, Berkeley must put liberty in man, in order to save God from the responsibility of evil, and make man responsible for it. On the other hand, he says that knowing the Law of God in order to obey it, is only possible if we learn it as a linguistic model, which includes the notion of time and misinterpretations. But in its mistakes, liberty finds out its power of creation and autonomy, and it allows us, paradoxically, to achieve on Earth the Work of the Devil. The work of Berkeley is thus to produce a paradoxically notion of "liberty with only one choice"

The berkeley campus in california became the birthplace of student protest in the sixties. The climax of this protest was the free speech movement (fsm) which emerged in 1964. However, the origin of berkeley student protest goes back to tasc and slate. Those two student protest movements made people say that berkeley had become the seat of social change. The purpose of this dissertation is to show that there is a continuity between these three movements. In the first part, we will review the mccarthy era which seems to have sown the seeds of protest. We will also try to show the reasons why a wind of change blew through this prestigious campus - within and without. Then, we will analyze the links between the university microcosm and the first amendment to the u. S. Constitution. Indeed, the freedom of speech was at the core of what the students demanded. The dissertation also links the berkeley student protest to the american new left by dealing with the 'multiversity'. The word itself was coined by president clark kerr to define what berkeley was like in the sixties. After analyzing the reasons for the berkeley student unrest, we will study the berkeley revolt proper. The latter will mainly deal with the profile of the students and the three protest movements we have already discussed. We will see the links between berkeley and the counter-cultural revolution of the sixties. We will eventually show that student protest in the sixties went far beyond berkeley

In a world where God will soon be replaced by the lights of reason, where dissident sects are multiplying, and where deism and free thinking lead ever more souls on the path to heterodoxy and even atheism, Leibniz and Berkeley stand up to defend the cause of a creator attacked on every side. Apologetics, whose goals are both to prove the truth of religion and to show that the Christian God is worthy of love, require mind and heart, and allow to believe in reason. When philosophers defend religion, it is inevitably linked to a global understanding of the world and its principles, when on the other hand metaphysics should not refute apologetic designs and theological presupposition. Leibniz and Berkeley go back and forth between the god of reason, creator of the substances and the universe, simple root cause, and the loving God from the Gospels, who needs to be defended against the accusations against his goodness. To study how apologetics and metaphysics intertwine in a philosophical system is to question the relationship between reason and religion: can apologetics be a propaedeutic to the Christian faith, or does it only achieve the root cause of the deists?

Resumo:
The Rococo period in the arts, flourishing mainly from about 1710 to about 1750, was stylistically unified, but nevertheless its tremendous productivity and appeal throughout Occidental culture has proven difficult to explain. Having no contemporary theoretical literature, the Rococo is commonly taken to have been a final and degenerate form of the Baroque era or an extravagance arising from the supposed careless frivolity of the elites, including the intellectuals of the Enlightenment. Neither approach adequately accounts for Rococo style. Naming the Rococo raises profound issues for understanding the relations between conception and production in historical terms. Against the many difficulties that the term has involved in accounting for an immense but elusive cultural movement, this thesis argues that some of the chief philosophical conceptions of the period clarify the particular character and significance of Rococo production. Rococo production is here studied chiefly in decor, architecture, and the plastic arts. This thesis also makes an extended general argument for the value of intellectual history. Rococo style is a group of visual effects of which the central character is atectonicity. This is established by a synthesizing overview of Rococo ornamental motifs. Principal theorists of post-Cartesian thought have failed to see how these distinguish Rococo style from both Baroque and Enlightenment culture. The analysis addresses the historical narratives of Benjamin, Adorno, Foucault, Deleuze, and others about Baroque and Enlightenment culture. The core historical claim of this thesis is that Rococo atectonic effects are visual forms of the anti-materialist, idealist ontology of George Berkeley and of the metaphysics and ontology in the early work of Giambattista Vico. Close readings of important passages from works of both philosophers published in 1710 develop the relationship between atectonics and idealist ontology. Both men rejected the Baroque hierarchical cosmology in favor of finitude as the key to human understanding. The readings center on the issue of causality, including Berkeley's views of the perfect contingency of the world and on Vico's theories of truth and ingenium. A reading of Diderot's critique of the Rococo, which led the reaction to it, shows that he recognized the power of idealist ontology in the Rococo cultural production. The larger force in the rejection of Rococo is the emergence of the sublime as a morally fearful feature of physical nature. Montesquieu's aesthetic work also shows the transition to a more rigidly determined view of existence, which was expressed but constrained in the little-recognized lattice motif in Rococo arts. The result of these readings is the influence during and after the Rococo period of the concept of continuous creation, in which the memory and imagination of the human subject relays God-given powers of creation into the production of culture. Continuous creation also suggested a human capability to animate material nature. Rococo style displays this as a pre-cinematic effects that represent the non-material, non-causal deep structure of reality.

Peer-to-peer technology is gaining grounds in many different application areas. This report describes the task of building a simple distributed and replicated database system on top of the distributed hash table Chord and the database application Berkeley DB Java Edition (JE). The prototype was implemented to support a limited subset of the commands available in JE. These were the main challenges of realizing the prototype; (1) integration of the application level communication with the Chord level communication (2) design and implement a set of data maintenance protocols required to handle node joins and failures (3) run tests to verify correct operation (4) to quantify basic performance metrics for our local area test setup. The performance of the prototype is acceptable, taken into consideration that network access is taking place and that it has not been optimized. There are challenges and features to support: (a) although Chord handles churn reasonably well, the application layer does not in the current implementation (b) operations that need to access all records in a specific database are not supported (c) an effective finger table is required in large networks The current approach seems to be well suited for relatively stable networks, but the need to relocate and otherwise maintain data requires more complex protocols in a system with high churn.

This dissertation is as much a study of Enlightenment intellectual history as a reflection on the Enlightenment as a historiographical concept. It reconstructs George Berkeley's writings so as to explore his dialectics of Enlightenment in terms of the conceptual conflicts between two languages of Enlightenment. It challenges (1) the predominant philosophical explication of Berkeley's thought that places him in philosophical traditions such as idealism and empiricism, (2) recent histories of Berkeley's 'non-philosophical' writings that tend to interpret him in the light of historiographical arguments about Enlightenment political economy and, in turn, take him as a case for the Irish participation in European Enlightenment, and (3) the historiographical conception of the Enlightenment that is preoccupied with the secular modernity thesis. The Introduction analyses the two historiographical grounds of this dissertation - Berkeley studies and Enlightenment intellectual history, and explains how this thesis intends to interact with these discourses. Chapter I explicates how Berkeley exposed the methodological failure of the new science, and shows why Berkeley thought a mathematically informed natural philosophy would threaten the stability of a protestant state. Chapter II delineates Berkeley's argument for the reasonableness of Christianity by tracing his demonstration of the divine being through a cooperation between metaphysics and natural philosophy. Chapter III shows Berkeley's criticism of the new science's theories of progress that defined 'an Enlightened age' as an improved human condition after the emancipation of rational agency from ecclesiastical and political authorities. Chapter IV turns to Berkeley's own theory of improvement based on his understandings of the socio-economic difficulties in eighteenth-century Ireland. Chapter V examines Berkeley's concern about the actual, social consequences of free-thinkers' theories of progress. Chapter VI explores Berkeley's argument for a genuine, theological Enlightenment as a counterpart to the religiously heterodox Enlightenment. The Conclusion asks the question about the relevance of this thesis, drawing attention to the idea of a critical and self-critical historiography as a way to re-accessing secular modernity's sense of historicity.

Resumo:
This thesis aims to analyze the novels Berkeley em Bellagio and Lord by Joao Gilberto Noll considering the perspective of the foreign as a power line that runs through both novels. These works of fiction were considered - in the context of Nolls production - a diptych. It is possible to identify in the authors first 21st century novels a particular way of writing about traveling which invites us to bring together the travelers staged there as his audience and the man who sees himself as a foreign. As the narrator-protagonists undertake journeys abroad, they subject their own identity to questioning. They recognize not only a temporary situation of those who are outside their country of origin, but rather a subjective structural condition. The conflicts engendered in a strange land - whether in relation to language, as in Berkeley em Bellagio, wheter in confrontation with self-image, as in Lord - lead us to think, with the support of Julia Kristevas arguments, that the notion of being abroad, in Noll, appears as something that is beyond conventional definitions, lying mainly in the realm of subjectivity.

By embracing methodologic postulates which exempt from falling into the comments and another puerile, routinary and, in fine, not very instructive interpretations that the applied psycho-analysis produced when it devoted itself to critical research, the use of freud's science can be the beginning of a theory of the works's elaboration which allows to establish a precise critical discourse for the localization of multiple means employed by every creator in order to attain his ends. In the case of a philosophical speculation as berkeley's doctrine, the find of an essential phantasm broachs the description of the genesis of this system : account of the total of syntagmatic relations and paradigmatic oppositions opened by the conceptual partition which is congruent with this basic desire, established fact of the extension by spreading of the latter, analysis of the unconsciously executed polymerization when an observation of the real is decisively in the way of the pursuit of elaboration : such things are the necessary stages for the understanding of the part of the desire and of its play with the real into the formation of every thesis destined to meet the obstacle which is a fact or an objection. Up to the present, many points acquired by this standpoint are unknown to all the historians of the philosophy : importance of the monist scheme, unusualness of the berkeley's god built from this pattern, use of an exiguous principle of causality, omission of a third solution to qualify the lack of necessary connection between some ideas, problem of the subordination of the thesis, discovery of the implicit motives which invited to reflect on the abstract ideas,. .

The English art song in the 20th-century presents a performance challenge unique in the solo song repertoire. Unlike the corresponding bodies of German Lied and French mélodie, which proceeded from a well-ingrained national tradition of music and poetry, the English art song had no such background. The many British composers who have contributed to the song literature of this century reflect varied backgrounds and influences. Lennox Berkeley combined his English heritage with the French background of his mother's family, largely self-taught musical skills and an innate sensitivity to poetry to become one of the most prominent song composers of this century. He trained with Nadia Boulanger, gaining exposure to the formal and melodic techniques of Faure and the neo-classicism of Stravinsky. Berkeley composed a total of seventy-eight solo songs. His acceptance and furtherance of a fundamentally traditional songmaker's craft place him more directly in the post-war line of succession of English song than Benjamin Britten, whose innovative musical techniques place him in the vanguard of new music. This document explores those aspects of Berkeley's life and work that contribute to his compositional choices. It provides an overview of all of Berkeley's known solo songs as well as a more detailed analysis of Five Songs (Walter de la Mare), Five Poems CW.H. Auden) and Another Spring. The paper illustrates the qualities of Berkeley's songs which justify his inclusion among the most successful art song composers of this century

In 2012, the City of Richmond submitted a proposal and was selected to be home of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) Second Campus. The elimination of more than $1.5 billion in federal funding halted the project, after which the Berkeley Global Campus concept was developed and introduced by the University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley) chancellor. The proposed Berkeley Global Campus is an international research and education hub that Richmond anticipates will anchor a revitalized waterfront district. The campus is an opportunity to build from the ground up a university campus that will also generate wealth for the local community. Richmond is grappling with challenges that are familiar to many cities: 1) how to enable redevelopment of a vacant, previously industrial site, and 2) how to shape a university-community partnership that facilitates deep economic impact in communities in areas including employment, local procurement, and housing. As UC Berkeley and the City of Richmond remain committed to realizing the vision for the university campus, this period can be utilized to articulate a deliberative and inclusive planning process building on the planning and collaborative infrastructure already in place. This thesis explores how the City of Richmond can help facilitate the university campus development and achieve social goals based on wealth creation.

This work tries to defend an objectivist theory of colour by a reconciliation of two theses generally considered as incompatible: physicalism, the theory that colours are scientific properties of objects, and revelation, the thesis that the nature of a colour is revealed by an experience of this colour. Those theses are considered as incompatible because colours are presented as qualities, while science is only about quantities. After a chapter about the history of the problem, showing how we can understand the modern controversy on secondary qualities thanks to the revelation thesis, I show how to understand revelation, distinguishing it from phenomenology, and claim that a correct theory of colour must support revelation. After that, I argue that colours are transitory events, not standing properties: light produce colours, which are effects of the interaction of light with matter or, for primary light sources, events happening in them. This thesis gives a partial answer to some arguments against objectivism, notably variability arguments. Above all, this new categorization of colour reconciles the qualitative chromatic descriptions of colours with their quantitative physical descriptions, thus allowing reconciliation between the manifest and the scientific images of the world

Using residential architecture constructed by Bernard Maybeck (1862-1957) in the hillside of Berkeley (United States of America, California) during the period comprised between 1892 and 1904, this thesis shows how was articulated a unique architectural language inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement and more specifically the English author, theorician and critic John Ruskin (1819-1900). Under Maybeck's guidance, the architectural ensemble that he affectionately called his « gothic houses » became an important tool helping the establishment of a new way of life centered around architecture and nature. Berkeley's hillsides and landscape influenced considerably the artistic research, as the houses had to reflect their surroundings. Understanding this architectural development as an interpretation of the landscape and of the nature of Gothic as defined by Ruskin, Maybeck shows the necessity to go back to a « simpler » life where man and nature are in harmony.
