Heidaigou Surface Coal Mine (HSCM) is a large surfaces coal mine that first uses the throwing blasting - dragline stripping technology. Lots of new demanding prompt solution issues appears in HSCM without any successful experience in China, such as the stability of dragline stripping bench, the design and implementation of throwing blasting parameters, and the optimization of dragline stripping technology parameters. Rigid Body Limit Equilibrium Method (RBLEM) was used to study the safety and stability of dragline solid high bench and dragline stripping loosen bench under different workface parameters and influence factors. The safe operation parameters of dragline stripping bench are proposed. The dozer lowered height of the stripping bench, the width of extended bench and dragline operation parameters are optimized using the Optimization System of Dragline Stripping Technology (OSDST). The results can provide the decision support for HSCM.

The dimension stone industry faces a significant environmental challenge due to the large amount of waste produced during the production process. About 51.3% of the materials extracted from dimension stone quarries worldwide end up as quarry waste. The presence of discontinuities and fractures primarily causes this waste. However, by examining the characteristics of these discontinuities and fractures and identifying in-situ blocks of the rock mass, it is possible to reduce the amount of waste produced during dimension stone quarrying. This study focuses on an abandoned quarry bench of the Lashotor quarries complex in the Isfahan Province, Iran. Due to high waste production, the quarry bench was left unused. The study aimed to identify the in-situ blocks of the quarry bench by examining the characteristics of the rock mass’s discontinuities and fractures. The authors used a modified algorithm to identify and grade all the quarry bench blocks based on the target market. The study revealed that some blocks in the abandoned quarry bench could be supplied to the target market, and the bench has the potential for block extraction. The algorithm’s modification based on the shape factor of blocks is an important innovation that increases the accuracy of block determination compared to previous methods. Overall, this algorithm can be used as a decision-making tool in extracting or not extracting the quarry bench of dimension stone quarries and implementing an optimal cutting pattern to reduce waste production.

As is known from the classic works on open pit mining, the bench is a separately developed part of the rock layer, having the form of a step. It should also be noted that it is necessary to clearly differentiate the concepts of “bench height” and “height of the layer to be removed.” The benches are often divided into subbenches, developed by different excavation equipment or by the same equipment both sequentially and simultaneously, but having transport routes that are uniform for the bench. As an example, an excavator stripping of the upper and lower subbenches with loading, respectively, at the level of the excavator and above this level, is usually given, that is, the transport route (road) passes through an intermediate platform bench located in the middle of its height. Therefore, the excavation layer of any height, which is, in fact, a part of the working bench, can be considered as an independent bench with all its attributes, but in order to avoid duplication of definitions, this paper suggests the name “extraction layer”. When developing this element various digging modes can be applied. In this paper, we studied the main modes and selected the one that provides the highest performance.

In this paper, the test bench for electric vehicle drive system is designed and the real-time display of speed, torque, current, voltage and other conventional parameters are realized that can offer lots of authentic data for motor performance evaluation, motor parametric design and optimizing control strategy. Road simulation is an important function in the test bench, so the paper analyses the driving electric vehicle in the longitudinal and gives the theoretical dynamometer dynamic output load values that can provide the theory reference for the further implementation of road conditions simulation based on LabVIEW. Finally, in order to validate the test bench feasibility, the start, accelerated and deceleration tests are implemented and show good performance of the bench.

Abstract In Japan, the rate of aging exceeds 27%, and the decline of communities has been an issue. Therefore, in this study we take the T housing complex as an example where the rate of aging is more than 40% and aim to understand the usage pattern of benches. An observational research was conducted for 19 days to examine the usage of a total of 23 benches, 17 existing ones and 6 newly installed ones, in the T housing complex. This investigation led to the findings. An average of 417 people used the benches in a day. Research determined that there are four different types of bench utilization, and they each present different ways of building relationships with other people. Bench use behavior was broken into four different categories. Sitting on a bench alone (without building relationships with others) was classified as “single use”. Sitting on a bench with another person but not engaging in any relationship-building behavior was classified as “sharing”. Sitting on a bench and exhibiting relationship-building behavior with others (such as through talking) was classified as “chatting”. Sitting with companions in groups of 3 or more people and exhibiting relationship-building behavior was classified as “group use”. Our findings provide evidence that a bench can be a device to foster the formation of diverse communities.

In this paper, the mechanical behavior of excavation and support construction of Weishe tunnel, which is a section of the Yangwu expressway, is studied quantitatively using 3D finite difference numerical simulation method. A sequential excavation method is used and the results show that the vault settlement occurs mainly on the phase of upper bench excavation. The convergences of upper and lower sidewalls occur mainly on the phase of lower bench excavation. During the construction, the surrounding rock pressure in the vault and sidewall of the tunnel decrease. Axial force of anchor reaches the maximum value after the finish of second lining. However, the surrounding rock pressure and internal force of steel arch reach the maximum value after completing the upper bench excavation, and then become as smaller as half of the peak value during the lower bench excavation.

In this study, the concept of bench test was established to replace the real distance test conducted outdoors for determining the sensitivity of UV flame detectors. In addition, the experimental apparatus of the bench test was developed and its validity was confirmed. The fire source of bench experiments used a microburner (6 mm diameter) using liquefied petroleum gas, and the bench test was performed with a flame height of 5 cm. The flame detector used in the experiment was a UV flame detector, and the amount of light was measured up to 2.4 m at a distance of 0.2 m from the fire source. The amount of light was used by converting the output signal of the UV sensor of the flame detector into an electrical signal. The fire source of the real distance test used normal heptane (n-Heptane) and measured the light up to 36 m at 5 m intervals. As a result of comparing the distance-light quantity measured in the two experiments, a straight line with the same slope was obtained and it was confirmed that bench test is possible indoors. The results of this study, if used by manufacturers in the development of flame detectors, will enable quality and performance improvements.

Mechanical load has been estimated during step exercise based on ground reaction force (GRF) obtained by force platforms. It is not yet accurately known whether these measures reflect foot contact forces once the latter depend on footwear and are potentially modified by the compliant properties of the step bench. The aim of the study was to compare maximal and mean plantar pressure (PP), and maximal GRF obtained by pressure insoles after performing seven movements both over two metal force platforms and over the step bench. Fifteen step-experienced females performed the movements at the cadences of 130 and 140 beats per minute. PP and GRF (estimated from PP) obtained for each floor condition were compared. Maximal PP ranged from 29.27 ± 9.94 to 47.07 ± 12.88 N/cm2 as for metal platforms, and from 28.20 ± 9.32 to 43.00 ± 13.80 N/cm2 as for the step bench. Mean PP ranged from 11.09 ± 1.62 to 14.32 ± 2.06 N/cm2 (platforms) and from 10.71 ± 1.54 to 14.22 ± 1.77 N/cm2 (step bench). GRF (normalized body weight) ranged from 1.43 ± 0.14 to 2.41 ± 0.24 BW (platforms) and from 1.38 ± 0.14 to 2.36 ± 0.19 BW (step bench). No significant statistical differences were obtained for most of the comparisons between the two conditions tested. The results suggest that metal force platform surfaces are suitable to assess mechanical load during this physical activity. The forces applied to the foot are similar to the softer step bench and the hard force platform surface. This may reflect the ability of the performers to adapt their movement patterns to normalize the impact forces in different floor conditions.

During the construction of the new urban area in the north-eastern part of Stockholm, Stockholm Royal Seaport, groundwater with extremely elevated levels of the carcinogenic aromatic hydrocarbon benzene was discovered in the area Hjorthagen. Such a contamination can be remediated in-situ by the use of chemical oxidation and biodegradation. Due to the fact that many factors such as contaminant composition, groundwater characteristics and temperature vary between sites, smaller bench scale studies are usually conducted before the full scale remediation on site. Little published research exists on the ability of these remediation techniques in areas with lower groundwater temperature such as Stockholm, why the need of a bench-scale study in this case is even larger. The objective of this master thesis is to, out of three investigated remediation agents, find the most suitable one for remediation of the benzene-contaminated groundwater in Hjorthagen. This was made in the form of a bench-scale study and the techniques studied were chemical oxidation, for which the two agents hydrogen peroxide (uncatalyzed and catalyzed in the form of Fenton’s reagent) and persulfate (activated with iron (II)) were used, and biological degradation by the use of a calcium peroxide-based compound. The study showed that the benzene-contaminated groundwater was best remediated with Fenton’s reagent, which was able to degrade the benzene with great success.

The Inland Revenue Department (Inland Revenue) launched the Industry Benchmarking Programme (Benchmarking Programme) in 2011; which closely followed the Small Business Benchmarking Programme (SBBP) which was released by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) in 2009. These programmes took data from tax returns and other sources, and turn this into a series of financial benchmarks for specific industries. The data from these programmes was then published on the respective websites of Inland Revenue and the ATO. It was envisaged by both tax administrations that this data would be used by taxpayers to benchmark their financial performance against others in their industry. The Benchmarking Programme was designed to assist Inland Revenue with its compliance strategy and to better its their audits. This exploratory research was mainly focused on the use (or lack of) of Inland Revenue’s Benchmarking Programme by taxpayers and tax practitioners. Other aspects of the Benchmarking Programme were investigated. Interviews with six tax practitioners were conducted, supplemented by documentary analysis of the Benchmarking Programme and other sources of data. It was found that the tax practitioners do not use the data for several reasons, including issues with the integrity of the data and its usefulness. It suggested that taxpayers do not use the data from the Benchmarking Programme, and indeed may not have any knowledge of it. The overall impact of the Benchmarking Programme was deemed to be minimal. Several recommendations were to be presented for consideration by Inland Revenue as a result of the findings in the project.

Until recently, the management of milking parlour effluent has received very little attention. The wastewater produced by milking operations comprises mainly milk solids and manure and can impose environmental threats to nearby water bodies if not properly treated before disposal. In this study, three bench-scale Sequencing Batch Biological Reactors were used to treat the UBC dairy barn milking centre wastewater. The experiment was designed to investigate the treatment efficiency of the reactors under different operating temperatures and different numbers of cycles employed per unit daily flow (for the same hydraulic retention time). Parameters studied included BOD₅, COD, Total Suspended Solids, NH₃-N, N0₂-NO₃-N and dissolved oxygen uptake. It was concluded that very high and consistent treatment efficiency can be achieved by using a Sequencing Batch Biological Reactor to treat milking centre wastes. Over 90% BOD₅ removal was observed in the room temperature and 30°C reactors. Even in low operating temperatures of 3.7 and 10.5°C, over 70% BOD₅ removal was attained. Removal of the other pollutional parameters studied was similarly excellent. Uncontrolled denitrification also occured to various degrees in all three reactors. It was also concluded that within the range studied in this experiment (4 to 8 cycles per day), changing the number of cycles employed per unit daily flow did not have any significant effect on the treatment efficiency of the reactors.

Physical bench top experiments are performed to validate and complement ongoing computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analyses of ventricular assist device (VAD) circulation. VADs are used in patients whose hearts do not function to their maximum potential due advanced stages of heart disease and, consequently, are unable to adequately supply blood to the systemic circulation. VADs are commonly utilized as a bridge-to-transplantation, meaning that they are implanted in patients while waiting for a heart transplant. In such cases of long term utilization of VADs, it has been reported in the literatures that thrombo-embolic cerebral events occur in 14-47% of patients over the period of 6 to 12 months. This is a result of thrombus forming despite the use of anticoagulants and advances in VAD design. Accepting current rates of thrombo-embolisms, the main objective of the project is to identify and propose an optimal surgical cannula implantation orientation aimed at reducing the rate of thrombi reaching the carotid and vertebral arteries and thus reduce the morbidity and mortality rate associated with the long term use of VADs to patients suffering from advanced heart failure. The main focus of the experiment is on the physical aspect using a synthetic anatomically correct model constructed by rapid prototyping of the human aortic arch and surrounding vessels. Three VAD cannula implantation configurations are studied with and without bypass to the left carotid artery or to the Innominate artery with ligation of the branch vessel at its root. A mixture of water and glycerin serves to match blood viscosity measured with a rotating cone-plate viscometer. The Reynolds number in the ascending aorta is matched in the flow model. A closed loop mock circulatory system is then realized. In order to match the Reynolds number in the ascending aorta and LVAD cannula with that of the CFD model, a volumetric flow rate of 2.7 liters per minute is supplied through the synthetic VAD cannula and 0.9 liter per minute is supplied to the ascending aorta. Flow rates are measured using rotary flow meters and a pressure sensor is used to ensure a mean operating pressure of 100 mmHg is maintained. Synthetic acrylic blood clots are injected at the inlet of the VAD cannula and they are captured and counted at the vertebral and carotid arteries. The sizes of the thrombi simulated are 2, 3.5 and 5 mm which are typical of the range of diameters encountered in practice. Nearly 300 particles are released over 5 separate runs for each diameter, and overall embolization rates as well as individual embolization rates are evaluated along with associated confidence levels. The experimental results show consistency between CFD and experiment. Means comparison of thromboembolization rates predicted by CFD and bench-top results using a Z-score statistic with a 95% confidence level results in 22 of 24 cases being statistically equal. This study provides confidence in the predictive capabilities of the bench-top model as a methodology that can be utilized in upcoming studies utilizing patient-specific aortic bed model.

AbstractFor the mined land section of the river-crossing tunnel with small clearance, the study should be carried out for excavation method and safe spacing before the tunnel construction, for engineering properties of surrounding rock is poor and the distance between two tunnel tubes is small. In this paper, in combination with the mined land section works of the river-crossing tunnel on Rongjiang Fourth Road, the finite difference numerical simulation software was adopted to calculate mechanical behaviors of three construction methods: three-bench method, CD method and CRD method under different excavation spacing (10 m, 20 m, 30 m and 40 m) on the basis of grouting and pre-reinforcement of surrounding rock in the early stage. The calculation results indicate that vault displacement and ground settlement can notmeet the specification requirements when the three-bench method is adopted for construction, even if the excavation spacing between the former and latter tunnels is 40m; When the CD method is adopted for construction, vault displacement and ground settlement meet the specification requirements when the excavation spacing between the former and latter tunnels is 40m; When the CRD method is adopted for construction, vault displacement and ground settlement meet the specification requirements when the excavation spacing between the former and latter tunnels is 30m; The control effect of initial support deformation and surrounding rock displacement is in the following sequence: CRD method > CD method > three-bench method. Considering various factors, it is found that the CD method is more reasonable and efficient. Therefore, the CD method is recommended for tunnel excavation and the tunnelling spacing should be controlled to 40m.

Resumo:
This extended abstract describes a new bench test for measuring and studying mild, lubricated wear. The method combines MTM, which is able to produce contra-rotation so as to obtain high sliding speed while retaining low entrainment speed and thus boundary lubrication conditions, with ICP which is employed to analyze trace levels of iron in lubricants so as to monitor mild wear throughout a test.

Resumo:
Harmful algal blooms (HABs) threaten recreational waters and public supplies across the US, causing detrimental economic and environmental effects to communities. HABs can be mitigated with dissolved air flotation (DAF) treatment, which requires addition of pH-sensitive charged chemicals to neutralize algae, allowing them to attach to microbubbles and float to the surface. During HAB events and photosynthesis, algae raise the pH to levels that are not ideal for DAF. Traditionally, pH is reduced with a strong acid; however, this adds operational cost and permanently adjusts the water’s pH. This study assessed an approach that might allow for infusing CO₂ from diesel-powered electricity generators into the water prior to DAF treatment. It was hypothesized that formation of carbonic acid could temporarily reduce the pH. Results showed that 2.5%–5.0% CO₂ mixed within compressed air can achieve pH levels between 6–7 in algal water with an initial pH of 9–11 and alkalinity of 150 mg/L as CaCO₃. Further, dosing CO₂ before chemical addition yielded a 31% improvement in water clarification. Returning the pH back to natural levels was not achieved using ambient air microbubbles; however, coarse bubble air spargers should be tested to provide more volumetric capacity for CO₂ absorption.
