The occurrence of bedsores in Ghanaian hospitals, elderly homes or care homes is especially high among patients or people who are incapacitated and cannot move or turn on their own, and who happen to remain in a particular posture for a very long time. Patients in coma, those operated on and for that matter in critical state, and patients confined to wheelchairs are primary examples. Constant pressure on some parts of the body leads to the occurrence of pressure sores or ulcers. This paper seeks to implement a Bedsore Easing System (BeSoSys) that integrate several embedded hardware components, a database and software to reduce the occurrence of bedsores. These embedded hardware components include the Bed Device Unit (BDU), the Pocket Device Unit (PDU), a pressure or weight sensor, a temperature sensor, and an inflation-deflation device. The BDU is fitted into the bed of the patient or on the surface of skin contact of the patient. The PDU is assigned to nurses or caretakers to serve as an alarm system for patient repositioning depending on situation. All activities in the Bedsore Easing System are logged into a database for future references. A bedridden patient exerts constant pressure on the bony protrusions of the body, and this causes bedsores. It was found out during the research that in Ghana, the nurses or caretakers used to turn and massage patients at some random time intervals as a way of preventing bedsores. This traditional way of turning and massaging patients is not only tedious but also ineffective. This paper seeks to provide easy, better, and effective solution to ease bedsores. The BeSoSys intends to prevent the occurrence of bedsores hence the alleviation of bedsore complications

ABSTRACT Background Bedsores are quite frequent in bedridden cases. Caregivers have an important role in the management of such cases. Objectives To assess the knowledge, beliefs and practices of caregivers regarding bedsore care practices and management. Materials and methods A cross-sectional study was conducted in Chandigarh from September to November 2011. Caregivers were interviewed about the knowledge, attitude and practice regarding care of bedridden patients and their problems like bedsores. Results Data was collected from 42 bedridden cases (22 males and 20 females). Age was 18 to 90 years. Bedsores were found in 10 bedridden cases. Most common underlying diagnosis was neurological disease in 24 cases. Twenty-nine patients consulted government hospitals. Earlier episode of bedsore was experienced in about 14 cases. In 24 cases bed sheet was changed daily. In 11 cases, for more than two times patient had to wait for more than half an hour if urine/stools were passed in bed. In six cases unqualified practitioners were also consulted. Thirty-seven of them complied with the physician's advice. Seventeen of the caregivers were aware of the warning signs of development of bedsores. Exercises were not performed in 26 cases. Different dressing regimes were reported viz til oil, desi ghee, platelet ointment, paraffin wax, etc. Conclusion Quality of care of bedridden was not good. There is a need for formal training for the caregivers as most of them were untrained. Evaluation of various dressing regimes for bedsores is needed. ABSTRACT Background and objective Bedsore is a disruptive and often disabling condition affecting bedridden, infirm, debilitated and malnourished patients. We looked at the incidence of bedsores among the admitted patients in a tertiary care hospital. Materials and methods This was an observational cohort study covering 2408 patients. The patients were followed up every alternative day from the day of admission till their discharge/ death from the hospital. Katz index of independence in activities of daily living was used to evaluate the level of functional dependence of patients. Braden scale was used to assess the risk factors for the formation of bedsores. Results A pooled incidence of 5.9% was estimated. The incidence of bedsore was maximum in intensive care units (9.4%), followed by orthopedic units (8%), emergency wards (7.7%) and neurosurgical units (6%). Mean age was 44.6 ± 17.56 (14-90 years). Unconscious patients, those admitted through emergency, and those who stayed longer in emergency and on IV fluids had a significantly higher chance of developing bedsores. This was also true for patients on Jejunostomy/Gastrostomy feed or total parenteral nutrition (TPN); who needed elevation of the head end of the bed; for whom assistance was required to change their position; and the patients whose position was changed less frequently (p < 0.05). The sacrum was the most common site for all the four stages of bedsores. Conclusion A bedsore incidence of 6% mandates an urgent need to improve the quality of patient care in various units of the hospital. Bedsores are still among the risks that most seriously impair the health of patients who need help and nursing care. Taking into account the existing knowledge about the possibilities of bedsore prevention, we can say that the goal of nursing care is to limit the development of bedsores as much as possible. At the same time, it is of great importance to ensure the continuity of preventive measures by specialized nursing staff. This includes, among other things, systematic risk assessment, training of patients and their relatives, encouraging them to exercise as much as possible, and, most importantly, taking measures to eliminate tissue compression. due to the increasing number of elderly people with multiple diseases considered to be the main risk group, the prevention and treatment of bedsores remains a priority among nursing care activities and requires effective management.

Objective: The high prevalence of bedsore creates many problems for the maintenance system and the patients, and in addition to spending high costs for treating ulcers, a lot of time is also dedicated to caring for them. The purpose of performing this study is to investigate the therapeutic results of recovering bedsore injuries by cover flaps. Work Method: This study is of prospective type in which 85 patients with bedsore who had referred to Taleghani Hospital in Kermanshah for treatment by muscle cover flaps during the years of 2016 to 2017, were followed up at time periods of 1 week, and 3 months after the discharge and in case of failure, they were recovered. Finally, the obtained data were analyzed by using statistical tests and SPSS version 22 software. Results: The obtained results showed that the success percentage of recovering bedsores was significantly increased after one week, and 3 months by cover flaps (P &lt;0.05). Also, the success percentage of recovering bedsores by cover flap after one week, and 3 months in terms of age, gender, and BMI of patients significantly shows an increase (P &lt;0.05). Conclusion: In general, it can be concluded from this study that using cover flaps leads to the success of recovering bedsores after 3 months of treatment, and the age, gender, and BMI variables of patients cannot be effective in this improvement process.

Bedsores mainly occur in bedridden patients who have to lie in the same position for a long period of time, or in people with spinal cord disabilities who use wheelchairs and cannot change positions on their own. In order to prevent excessive pressure on the skin over bone protrusions, which causes circulation problems in peripheral blood vessels and causes bedsores, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety has designated and operates bedsore prevention cushions as medical devices. ISO, an international standardization organization, established and operates ISO 16840-2 to evaluate the performance of cushions to prevent bedsores for wheelchair users. The purpose of this study is to design and develop a test device to apply this international standard to the test and evaluation of domestic bedsore prevention cushions. In particular, the main purpose was to develop a shock absorption test device to determine how effectively bedsore prevention cushions cushion the shock that occurs when a wheelchair collides with the road surface on a bump or pothole. The impact absorption test device was manufactured by modifying part of the guidelines of ISO 16840-2. In the above international standard, the crash plate is to be supported with a piece of wood block. However, in this study, the time delay that may occur during removal of the block was shortened and convenience was improved by using a roller system instead of wooden block to drop the object. Using the manufactured test device, a shock absorption test was conducted on an air-grid type bedsore prevention cushion and a hybrid bedsore prevention cushion that is a mixture of foam type and air grid type. When the human hip model falls, the falling acceleration was reduced to 63% with the air-grid type cusion compared to the value with no cushion, and it decreased to 42% with the hybrid cushion. However, the occurrence of bedsores is affected not only by the impact force applied to the skin when the wheelchair collides with the ground, but also by the breathability and humidity of the impact area, so it is necessary to comprehensively evaluate various risk factors, including shock absorption tests. The roller-type shock absorption test device will be proposed as an amendment to ISO 16840-2 to the International Standards Committee.

BACKGROUND: Bedsores or decubital ulcers are significant medical and social problems in patients with serious brain damage. The majority of local treatments are ineffective and do not ensure their healing. Therefore, the search for nondrug methods as part of the complex treatment of decubital ulcers is extremely relevant. AIM: To assess the morphological picture of bedsores against the background of an improved method of treatment using high-frequency electrical stimulation with pulsed currents in chronically immobilised patients who survived a cerebral catastrophe. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Biopsies of bedsores were examined in 12 patients with severe neurological disorders that developed after a cerebral catastrophe. The initial status of all patients was a ‘chronic critical condition’ (CCS). In all patients, the bedsore defect was located in the sacral region, with a length of 7–25 cm2. The depth of the bedsore corresponded to grade III according to the classification of the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research. Two groups of patients were formed: the main group of five patients (three men + two women), with an average age of 49.0 years, who were subjected to electrical stimulation with pulsed currents of the radiofrequency range. A control group of seven patients (three men + four women), with an average age of 60.1 years, who underwent traditional treatment. The duration of the chronic wound process ranged from 2 months to 1.5 years. The immediate cause of CCS was more often a massive ischaemic stroke (8), less often a severe traumatic brain injury (3) and radical operations to remove brain tumours (1) of various prescriptions from 3 months to 1.5 years. Morphological studies were conducted in both groups to assess the complicated wound process. RESULTS: The complex morphological study revealed that in the presence of high-frequency electrical stimulation, an earlier appearance of foci of fibroblastic proliferation, an increase in the regenerative potential of tissues due to increased production of type I and III collagens, and myofibroblastic and endothelial growth factors were noted. CONCLUSION: In the case of CCS of cerebral genesis, the wound process in bedsores inevitably becomes complicated and, according to morphological research, is characterised by severe endothelial dysfunction, deep microcirculation disorders, depletion of the potential of myofibroblastic cells and deficiency of their growth factors. Local high-frequency electrical stimulation in patients with severe brain damage and decubital ulcers as a component of complex ulcer therapy significantly optimises cellular and tissue reactions in the area of bedsores.

The best recognized and also the most widespread example of tissue necrosis is bedsore. A bedsore is localized damage to the skin and other underlying tissue, usually over a bony prominence, as a result of prolonged, unrelieved pressure. The cause of bedsore is shearing forces; friction, moisture, and constant pressure contribute to the development of bedsore. Hospital research shows that bedsores develop from 3% to 4.5% of patients during prolonged hospitalization and Sores develop from 25% to 85% of patients with spinal cord injury. The doctor and nurses will regularly examine the patient who is at risk of developing bedsore and inspect each pressure sites at least twice a day. Doctors and nurses are important warriors who manage bedsore treatment effectively. This review describes the new strategies have been used to prevent and management of bedsore such as inexpensive foam devices, anti-pressure devices, air-filled equipment, a sheet of hydrogels, wound vacuum-assisted closer, skin bioprinting, and Lab VIEW virtual instrument.

Background: Development of a bedsore is always avoidable still its worldwide prevalence fluctuates between 0%-56%. Bedsores are maximally observed in patients who are on long term care, in intensive care, immuno-compromised or on home care.Methods: In a tertiary care center-JK hospital, Bhopal, a longitudinal observational study was done for a duration of 3 years, on all registered in-patients, to understand the trend of bedsore rates on monthly basis.Results: In our study, even though, on yearly basis, average of rates is showing a declining trend in favorable manner yet higher statistical analysis (ANOVA test p value = 0.054) has decrypted the non-significant results.Conclusions: Timely and appropriate prophylactic interventions are needed to overcome the increased bedsore rates. Checklist based surveillance and monitoring should be a pressing priority. Cochrane reviews are also suggestive of incorporation of organizational changes, risk assessment tools, wound care teams and education to reduce the incidence of pressure ulcers.

The incidence of bedsores varies from 3 to 40%, with a maximum of 80% in patients in critical condition for a long time. The purpose of this review is to analyze the range of methods of decubitus therapy, which have been shown to be effective in conservative treatment. The objectives of the study included: a) analysis of available literature sources; b) identification of effective methods of decubitus therapy; c) analysis of methods of prevention of bedsores. Thirty-one scientific publications from PubMed, Scopus databases since 2020 were analyzed. The analyzed methods included vacuum therapy, ultrasound methods, hydrosurgery, plasma flow method, laser application, electrostimulation, and a complex combination of methods. Many involved methods give the choice in therapy strategy. The most expedient and effective is the complex combination of methods. Conclusions. Currently, a decrease in the incidence of bedsores is not expected; therefore, the analysis of the effectiveness of methods of therapy and prevention of bedsores remains relevant.

Objective a retrospective assessment of the bedsores' features, the optimization of treatment tactics, evaluation of long-term treatment results. Material and methods.The study group included 38 patients with stage IV decubitus ulcers according to the classification of AHCPR localized in the sacral region, the area of the ischial tuberosity and the greater trochanter. Results.We determined the critical time intervals for the decubitus ulcers occurrence. It has been found that in most patients bedsores are remaining for a long period of time. The modern complex methods for the IV stage decubitus ulcers treatment with the plastics of the soft tissue defects revealed their reliably higher effectiveness. Conclusion.The formation of bedsores most often occurs during the first month after the injury and three years after the injury. The treatment of patients with this pathology should be comprehensive and carried out in the well-equipped purulent surgery department by the specialists experienced in treating such patients. The plastic surgery by displaced blood-supplying flaps contributes to success in the treatment of stage IV bedsores.

Fillet flaps and autografts are reserved as a last resort option of reconstructive surgery and are indicated in extensive, recurrent, or bilateral defects especially caused by spinal trauma, commonly as a result of pressure sores trauma or tumour disease. No early and late-term complications were seen post-operatively that led to improvement in quality of life of the patient. The patient is able to perform a lot of daily routines – replacement of a long urinary catheter, getting dressed, is aware of the health condition, and behaves responsibly. An auto-flap creation with the right leg exarticulation was a reconstructive manipulation to maximise physiology and integrity of the spinal trauma patient. In the evaluated clinical case, fillet flaps and autografts were reserved as a last resort option for reconstructive surgery and were indicated because of extensive, recurrent, bilateral pressure sores caused by immobility. Bedsores or decubitus ulcers are severe manifestation of pressure induced skin and soft tissue injury also termed as Pressure Ulcer and based on its chronicity and features of ulcer we can correlate the condition as Dusta vrana in our Ayurvedic classics. Acharya Sushruta has given special importance to vrana chikitsa having 7modalitiesie local shodhan and Ropana . Sushruta has described treatment of Dusta vrana on the basis of involvement of vitiated doshas ,site of vrana , excessive putrification and inflammatory changes. The current study employed prakshalan with Aragvadhadi kashaya and lepan of Jatyadi taila and Yasad bhasma in a patient having bedsore in lumbosacral region which showed reduction in size of the wound and associated symptoms along with formation of granulation tissue and fast wound healing.

Abstract Bacground: Honey was used to treat infected wounds as long as 2000 years before bacteria were discovered. It has been reported to have inhibitory action to around 50 species of bacteria and fungi (aspergillus, penicillium). Usually, Metronidazole powder is used in our palliative clinic for wound healing due to low cost & effectivity. Honey is cheap, easily available ingredient with high astringent activity. Objective: Objectives of the study were to find out the effectiveness of Honey in terms of rate of wound healing & pain control in bedsores of cancer patients. Materials and Methods: 40 cancer patients with bedsore wounds were randomly assigned (1:1 ratio i.e. 20 in each arm) for Study Arm (Honey plus Metronidazole powder) and Control Arm (only Metronidazole powder), attending Palliative clinic of our department in between July 2010 to September 2011. Washing of the wound with normal saline done daily before application of above medicaments. Change of posture & soft bed were encouraged in both groups. A pre designed interview proforma, standardised Bates Jensen Wound Assessment Tool and Visual Analogue Pain assessment scale were used to collect and assess data. Results: There was significant difference in wound healing status (F value = 6.523; Critical Difference =14.03, P&nit;0.05) from day 10 and pain reduction also (F value = 6.638 and Critical Difference = 1.667, P&nit;0.05) from day 7 in study arm. Conclusion: Application of honey dressing provides a better wound healing, rapid pain relief in cancer patients with bedsores in palliative settings.

Background: Few disease states ever present themselves to an attainable and near-term solution as pressure ulcers. Bedsore develops when blood supply to the skin is cut off for more than 2 to 3 hours. As the skin dries, bedsore first starts as a red, painful area, which eventually turns purple. Left untreated, skin can break open and the area can become infected.Method: A set of 50 subjects were identified who are willingly volunteering in the test. As the COVID-19 pandemic has extensively limited access to the hospital and patients, it was decided to conduct the experiment in-house.Results: For all the 50 volunteers, the device was able to relieve the high-pressure point under the patient heel within 20 mins. The mean time taken is 11 mins 6 sec.Conclusions: This preliminary study provides some initial data supporting the hypothesis that the RelifP device can identify and relieve the high-pressure area and equalize the pressure throughout. This technology can positively impact prevention in bedsores and reduce the pain and distress borne by the affected patient and caregivers.

Abstract Background Patients with head injury are discharged from hospitals in a dependent state. In the home care settings, the caregivers have to take care of the patients. In India, there is scarcity of data on interventions of family caregivers of persons with head injuries. Objective To assess the efficacy of an instructional module for caregivers of patients with head injury on recovery of the patients. Method The study was performed at the Neuro-Surgery Department of Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, India. Total 82 patients with 41 each in experimental and control groups and their caregivers were included in the study. The caregivers of patients in experimental group were demonstrated procedures related to care of a dependent patient. An instructional module containing guidelines regarding personal hygiene, catheter care at home, prevention of bedsores, tracheostomy suctioning at home, range-of-motion exercises, care of surgical wound, and discharge instructions regarding medication and follow-up was given to the caregivers in experimental group. The efficacy of intervention was assessed on occurrence of fever, chest infection, eye infection, bedsores, wound infection, constipation, urinary tract infection, deep vein thrombosis, length of stay, and readmission in hospital in both the groups. Results Occurrence of fever, constipation, and length of stay were reduced significantly in experimental group. A reduction in the rates of chest infection, bedsore development, wound infection, and urinary tract infection were also noted in experimental group. Conclusion The study shows that training the caregivers of head injury patients enhances the recovery and prevents complications in the patients.

Introduction: Pressure ulcer is one of the serious complications of patients, especially the elderly during hospitalization, which increases the cost of health care and decreases the quality of life of the patient, and often results from long stay in the hospital. Therefore, this study was conducted with the aim of determining the prevalence of bedsores among elderly hospitalized in Imam Reza hospital in Kermanshah. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 5698 patients referred to Imam Reza hospital between 2019 and 2022. The inclusion criteria were more than 65 years old. Wound assessment was performed based on Braden criteria and wound grading by trained experts. After entering the SPSS version 16 software, the data were analyzed using a chi-square test. Results: The average age of the participants in the study was 77.02 ± 8.27 years, and the highest frequency of bedsores (22.3%) was reported in the age group of 65 to 69 years. Wound grades 1 and 4 had the highest and lowest frequency respectively. The chi-square test analysis showed that the degree of wound and the risk assessment of pressure ulcers were not significant according to gender (P<0.05). Conclusion: According to the results of this study, the prevalence of bedsores in Imam Reza hospital in Kermanshah is high, therefore, health and medical units can play an important role in preventing bedsores by knowing about the at-risk populations and implementing appropriate preventive strategies.

Background/Aims: Frailty increases the risks of in-hospital adverse events such as delirium, falls, and functional decline in older adults. We assessed the feasibility and clinical relevance of frailty status in Korean older inpatients using the Clinical Frailty Scale (CFS) and Korean version of the Fatigue, Resistance, Ambulation, Illnesses, & Loss of Weight scale (K-FRAIL) questionnaires.Methods: Frailty status was measured using the Korean-translated version of the CFS and K-FRAIL questionnaire within 3 days from admission in 144 consecutive patients aged 60 years or older. The correlation between CFS and K-FRAIL score was assessed. The criterion validity of CFS was assessed using receiver operating characteristic analysis. As outcomes, delirium, bedsore, length of stay (LOS), in-hospital mortality, and unplanned 30-day readmission were measured by reviewing medical records. Results: The mean age of the study population was 70.1 years (range, 60 to 91), and 75 (52.1%) were men. By linear regression analysis, CFS and K-FRAIL were positively correlated (B = 0.72, p < 0.001). A CFS cutoff of ≥ 5 maximized sensitivity + specificity to classify frailty using K-FRAIL as a reference (C-index = 0.893). Higher frailty burden by both CFS and K-FRAIL was associated with higher LOS and bedsores. Unplanned readmission and in-hospital mortality were associated with higher CFS score but not with K-FRAIL score, after adjusting for age, gender, polypharmacy, and multimorbidity. Conclusions: Frailty status by CFS was associated with LOS, bedsores, unplanned readmission, and in-hospital mortality. CFS can be used to screen high-risk patients who may benefit from geriatric interventions and discharge planning in acutely hospitalized older adults.

Most accidents occurring at medical institutions treating elderly patients with mobility impairment are bedsores and fall accidents. One of the reasons for this high rate of accidents is the lack of nursing personnel. In order to aid caregivers in nursing elderly patients who are not able to move about freely, in this paper, we propose a design and implementation of a smart bed. In this bed, several pressure sensors are deployed underneath the mattress cover to consider both peoples’ standard physical characteristics and the specific body parts where bedsores commonly occur. To manage the pressure ulcer area and to prevent falls, the body area is divided into three vertical areas and three horizontal areas. Each microcontroller unit manages pressure-sensing information in one of the body regions divided horizontally. In this study, a real-time pressure-sensing algorithm is presented that is capable of deciding on the possibilities of bedsores and falling accidents by considering both the intensity and the duration of pressure of specific body parts. Our experimental results demonstrate that a prototype smart bed works well for several human models of various heights and weights.

A bed sore is also known as a pressure sore and is an open ulcer on the skin. Bedsores are mostly found on the skin that covers bony areas. The primary objective of this research project was to develop and test the polyherbal dusting powder containing an aqueous extract of Azhadirachta indica, Curcuma longa L., Aloe vera, and Tagetes erecta. The preliminary phytochemical investigation of aqueous extract was carried out. Selected herbs have anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and wound-healing action needed for the treatment of bedsores. The powder was then tested for physical parameters like color, texture, smell, form, and pH), and micrometric parameters like size of particles, angle of repose, Hausner’s ratio, surface area, and other flow properties. The dosage form has been screened for antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus. The formulation showed significant antimicrobial activity as compared to the standard povidone iodine drug. In the skin irritation and wound healing studies performed on albino wistar rats, significant effects were observed with 200 mg of powder. According to the in-vivo study, polyherbal dusting powder has been shown to be effective in the treatment of bedsores and can be further investigated.

This paper describes a service-oriented middleware platform for ambient assisted living and its use in two different bed activity services: bedsore prevention and sleeping monitoring. A detailed description of the middleware platform, its elements and interfaces, as well as a service that is able to classify some typical user's positions in the bed is presented. Wireless sensor networks are supposed to be widely deployed in indoor settings and on people's bodies in tomorrow's pervasive computing environments. The key idea of this work is to leverage their presence by collecting the received signal strength measured among fixed general-purpose wireless sensor devices, deployed in the environment, and wearable ones. The RSS measurements are used to classify a set of user's positions in the bed, monitoring the activities of the user, and thus supporting the bedsores and the sleep monitoring issues. Moreover, the proposed services are able to decrease the energy consumption by exploiting the context information coming from the proposed middleware.

Most mishaps happening at clinical foundations treating older patients with portability hindrance are bedsores and slip-and-fall accidents. One reason for this high pace of mishaps is the absence of nursing faculty. So as to help parental figures in nursing old patients who are unable to move freely, we offer an arrangement and implementation of a wise bed in this work. This is the bed. Under the sheet material spread, a couple of weight sensors are passed to consider the two social orders' regular actual characteristics as well as the specific body portions where bedsores commonly arise. The body zone is divided into three vertical territories and three level zones to cope with the weight ulcer territory and prevent falls. Each microcontroller unit is in charge of monitoring pressure-differentiating data in one of the bodily regions separated on a level plane. In this review, a consistent weight distinguishing figure is offered that is useful for predicting the anticipated outcomes of bedsores and falling setbacks by taking into account both the strength and the length of weight of unambiguous body parts. Our preliminary findings reveal that a model magnificent bed serves a pair of human models of varied heights and burdens admirably.

Métodos: Revisão integrativa realizada nas bases de dados Lilacs, Medline, Scopus e Web of Science, utilizando a estratégia de busca em português: (“lesão por pressão” OR “úlcera por pressão” OR “úlcera de decúbito” OR “escara de decúbito”) AND enfermagem AND atitude AND prevenção, e, em inglês, (“pressure ulcer” OR “Bed Sore” OR “Bed Sores” OR Bedsore OR Bedsores) AND nursing AND atitude AND prevention, de acordo com as definições e palavra relacionadas presentes no DeCS e MESH. Resultados: Foram incluídos 14 artigos, sendo encontrados 3 instrumentos que verificam atitude de enfermeiros, Attitudes to Pressure Ulcers Prevention tool (APuP), Pressure Ulcer Attitude Test e Knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP). Considerações finais: Instrumentos que verificam a atitude de enfermeiros frente à prevenção de LP são necessários, não apenas para fins acadêmicos, mas para apoiar o trabalho de qualidade nas organizações de saúde na medida em que podem subsidiar programas de melhoria de competências e habilidades da força de trabalho.

Bedsores are one of the severe problems which could affect a long-term lying subject in the hospitals or the hospice. To prevent lying bedsores, we present a smart Internet of Things (IoT) system for detecting the position of a lying person using novel textile pressure sensors. To build such a system, it is necessary to use different technologies and techniques. We used sixty-four of our novel textile pressure sensors based on electrically conductive yarn and the Velostat to collect the information about the pressure distribution of the lying person. Using Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT) protocol and Arduino-based hardware, we send measured data to the server. On the server side, there is a Node-RED application responsible for data collection, evaluation, and provisioning. We are using a neural network to classify the subject lying posture on the separate device because of the computation complexity. We created the challenging dataset from the observation of twenty-one people in four lying positions. We achieved a best classification precision of 92% for fourth class (right side posture type). On the other hand, the best recall (91%) for first class (supine posture type) was obtained. The best F1 score (84%) was achieved for first class (supine posture type). After the classification, we send the information to the staff desktop application. The application reminds employees when it is necessary to change the lying position of individual subjects and thus prevent bedsores.

This retrospective study addresses the pivotal role of pressure ulcer prevention in evaluating the quality of care within critical care units. The incidence of pressure ulcers serves as a crucial indicator, impacting patient recovery and complicating treatment. In this data based retrospective study we assessed the prevalence of pressure ulcers for a duration of 6 years. In this data we included the patients from surgical, medical, respiratory and cardiac critical care units who were admitted between 01/06/16 to 01/06/22. All male and female patients aged above 18 years were included. Patients who got discharge within 48 hours were excluded. Total of 35 patients were noted to have bedsores in intensive care unit from June 2016-June 2022 admitted under both medical and surgical branches. Out of which 34.3% were in age group above 70yrs where 87.9% were male patients. Most commonly 1-2 bedsores (97.1%) were present involving mostly buttock area (82.9%) of 2-5cm size (45.7%). Most of the patients admitted under medical branch developed bedsores more often than surgical branch and appeared after admission (77.1%) with 15-30 days hospital stay (31.4%). This study has illuminated our path forward in improving patient care and preventing pressure ulcer development among patients admitted to our medical and surgical Intensive Care Units in our Rural Tertiary hospital. The findings have paved the way for targeted interventions, underlining our commitment to raising the standard of care for our critically ill patients.

Topicality. Bedsores are an urgent problem of modern medicine both at the outpatient and inpatient stage. For the treatment of infected bedsores it is advisable to use drugs that have a complex effect focused on various parts of the pathological process. For the treatment of chronic wounds and bedsores together with the inhibition of the growth of microorganisms the drug must provide the optimal conditions for the growth of granulation, have a reparative and anti-inflammatory effect. Aim. To experimentally substantiate the composition of the gel base with hyaluronic acid and decamethoxine. Materials and methods. To select the structure-forming component in the gel base, the possibility of using “Ultrez 10 NF” carbomer, “Aristoflex AVC” (copolymer of acrylamidomethylpropanesulfonic acid and vinyl pyrrolidone) from Clariant Surfactants company, “Structure XL” (hydropropylated corn starch) as a gelling agent was studied. Organoleptic, physicochemical, structural and mechanical parameters of gel model samples were determined according to the methods of the State Pharmacopoeia of Ukraine. The statistical processing of the results was performed using the Statistica 6.0 program. Results and discussion. The choice of the optimal gelling agent was performed taking into account the results of the study of organoleptic, physicochemical, structural and mechanical parameters of gel model samples. The experimental studies conducted allowed to choose the optimal gelling agent – “Aristoflex AVC” in the concentration of 1 %. It is easily dispersed with water and does not require the addition of a neutralizer. It has been proven that the base selected has the optimal consumer, structural-mechanical, and physicochemical properties. Conclusions. Based on the organoleptic, physicochemical, structural-mechanical studies the composition of the gel base with hyaluronic acid and decamethoxine has been experimentally substantiated.

Bedsores, also known as pressure ulcers, are wounds caused by the applied external force (pressure) on body segments, thereby preventing blood supply from delivering the required elements to the skin tissue. Missing elements hinder the skin’s ability to maintain its health. It poses a significant threat to patients that have limited mobility. A new patented mattress design and alternative suggested designs aimed to reduce pressure are investigated in this paper for their performance in decreasing pressure. A simulation using Ansys finite element analysis (FEA) is carried out for comparison. Three-dimensional models are designed and tested in the simulation for a mattress and human anthropometric segments (Torso and Hip). All designs are carried out in solidworks. Results show that the original design can redistribute the pressure and decrease it up to 17% less than the normal mattress. The original design shows better ability to decrease the absolute amount of pressure on the body. However, increasing the surface area of the movable parts results in less pressure applied to the body parts. Thus, this work suggests changing the surface area of the cubes from 25 to 100 cm2.

Back pain is a commonly known problem for drivers and passengers traveling in long route vehicles, especially buses and trucks. The problem becomes more severe for people suffering from bedsores. The current embodiment is a step toward addressing this problem. This method helps to regulate blood flow and provide comfort to the drivers and bedsore patients. Pneumatic cylinder and 24 semi-circular designed aluminum buds are used in the assembly that moves up and down along with the comforter foam and sheet to serve the purpose. This design is an active way of providing comfort and has significantly helped in reducing back and lower body pain. A survey was conducted by 100 participants to analyze the comfort of the current embodiment. The age of these participants was divided into two categories. Results showed that comfort varies with age and pressure. It was concluded from the survey that young people from 20 to 30 years appreciate high pressure, whereas elderly people from 30 to 50 years like low pressure. The results from analysis of variance were found to be significant with feedback results. This system is also helpful in regulating blood flow. It was concluded that most people like high pressure and the first pattern.

Pressure ulcer or bedsore is a form of skin infection that commonly occurs with patients admitted to the hospital for an extended period of time, which might lead to severe complications in the absence of medical attention, resulting in infection either by drug-sensitive or drug-resistant bacteria. Halicin, a newly discovered drug effective against several bacterial strains, including multidrug-resistant bacteria, was investigated to reduce bacterial infection burden. This study aims to formulate halicin into electrospun fibers to be applied in bedsores as antibacterial dressing to assess its efficacy against gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) and gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli and Acinetobacter baumannii) by studying the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and bacterial zone of inhibition assays. The diameters of inhibition growth zones were measured, and the results have shown that the drug-loaded fibers were able to inhibit the growth of bacteria compared to the halicin discs. The release profile of the drug-loaded fibers exhibited a complete release of the drug after 2 h. The results demonstrated that the drug-loaded fibers could successfully release the drug while retaining their biological activity and they may be used as a potential antimicrobial dressing for patients with pressure ulcers caused by multidrug resistant bacteria.

Presented here are the results of investigations into the preparation of three-component dressing materials from various biopolymers in the form of a single-layer film which is suitable as a carrier for pain-relieving (lidocaine) and bacteriostatic (sulphanilamid) therapeutic agents. Physical-chemical, biological and usable properties of the prepared materials were tested and assessed. The amount of added active substance was adopted based on the dose recommended by the Polish Pharmacopeia for external medicinal preparations. Antibacterial activity against gram (-) Escherichia coli and gram (+) Staphylococcus aureus was assessed in some of the biocomposites by quantitative methods. The cytotoxic action in direct contact with the mouse fibroblast NCTC clone 929 was also estimated. Thermal analysis (DSC), infrared spectrophotometry (FTIR) and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy were employed to investigate the impact of the variable contents of chitosan, alginate, carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), and the active substance upon the chemical- and phase-structure of the prepared three-component polymeric biocomposites. It was found that the quantitative composition of the biocomposites and the additive of active substances lidocaine and sulphanilamide exert a vital impact upon their physical-mechanical and usable properties (imbibition, absorption). Investigations into the release of the medicinal substance from the investigated biocomposites to an acceptor fluid led to the conclusion that the kinetics of the process may be described by a complex first order rate equation with two exponential functions.

In the diagnosis and treatment of frontitis, frontal sinus trepanopuncture is widely used, after which the sinus is flushed and medication solutions are injected into it through a drainage cannula. Drainage cannula must be reliably fixed, have a sufficient lumen for the introduction of medications, not cause pain during manipulation, soft tissue bedsores. Existing metal cannulas with a mandrel for the frontal sinus do not meet all these requirements.

Objectives: to identify in the scientific literature how the assessment of knowledge of the nursing team about pressure injuries is conducted, which instruments are used, and their psychometric properties. Methods: integrative review conducted with 44 scientific articles. The search was conducted between October and December 2021 in the following data sources: BDENF, Cinahl, Lilacs, MEDLINE, Scopus, Google Scholar, and Web of Science, using the strategy in Portuguese: ("lesão por pressão" OR "úlcera por pressão" OR "úlcera de decúbito" OR "escara de decúbito") AND enfermagem AND conhecimento, and, in English, ("pressure ulcer" OR "bed sore" OR "bed sores" OR bedsore OR bedsores) AND nursing AND knowledge. Articles published between 2012 and November 2021 were included, with text available in full, in open access, in English, Portuguese, or Spanish, resulting from original research related to care in the hospital area. Results: The most used knowledge assessment instrument was the P-PUKT and its versions, used in 50% of the studies, followed by the PUKAT and its versions. Three studies also used instruments constructed and validated by the authors, five qualitative studies, and four studies used non-validated instruments. Conclusion: Valid instruments to assess knowledge are essential to identify possible failures in patient care. Heterogeneity in the samples and in the classification criteria of the participants' level of knowledge made it impossible to compare the results obtained in the studies, constituting a limitation.

Objective. To estimate the possibility of application of a borate-containing glass material while treating trophic wounds in children, suffering myelodysplasia. Маterials and methods. The data, concerning 3 children, who, while their newborn time were operated on for a spinal cord hernias, are presented. All the children have had myelodysplastic disordered trophic wound of the lower extremities, causing severe course of the wounds or the bedsores healing. Bioactive borate-containing glass «Mirragen», manufactured in USA, was proposed by medical centre «Меdyvo» for treatment of trophic wounds in children. Results. Application of bioactive borate-containing glass while treating trophic wounds in children, suffering myelodysplasia, was effective. Deep wounds during 8 weeks have had healed completely without complications, and a superficial wound—bedsore - during 5 weeks. The wounds have epithelized steadily, starting together from the bottom and periphery with velocity up to 12-15% of their square weekly. Negative general or local reaction towards a borate-containing glass in the patients was absent. Conclusion. Тemporary biomaterial, structured by a carcass, made of a borate-containing glass, guarantees a necessary form establishment, needed for creation of a new tissues and promotion of rapid healing of the wounds. Application of a bioactive borate-containing glass constitutes a safe and efficient method of treatment for trophic wounds in children, suffering myelodysplasia.

We studied case histories of 125 patients with various foreign bodies in the abdominal cavity left during surgeries according to materials from the Bashkir ASSR from 1938 to 1981. 88 patients had foreign bodies extracted during repeated surgeries, 11 patients - through a wound or a fistula at bandages, 21 patients - at autopsy. In 5 patients gauze foreign bodies due to bedsores penetrated from the abdominal cavity into the intestinal lumen and came out during defecation.
