Premature babies are capable of seeking contact with a source of rhythmic stimulation that reflects their own breathing rhythm. Optional stimulation, in the form of a "breathing" stuffed bear, was made available to premature infants, 32 to 35 weeks' gestational age. The bear's breathing rate was matched to that of each individual infant during quiet sleep. Other infants were exposed to a bear that did not breathe, and some infants were not exposed to a bear. All infants were monitored continuously using time-lapse video. After 2 to 3 weeks' exposure, those infants with a breathing bear-showed significantly more contact with their head, body, or limbs than either of the control groups (for the no-bear group, contact with the area that would have been occupied by the bear was determined to describe the contact that might have been expected by chance). In addition, the infants given the opportunity to self-regulate their stimulation showed greater amounts of quiet sleep than the other two groups.

Abstract Tom Thomson is a doyen of Canadian art. Here, I argue one of his well-known pictures contains a hidden figure. In Thomson’s Islands, Canoe Lake, 1916, a blue-gray picture primitive richly affords a rock and a bear, a long-overlooked ambiguity, one that Thomson did not tell us he intended. Its picture primitives are contours and patches. They offer a limited set of scene primitives. A likelihood ratio of less than 1 in 100 supports the contention that the bear is a hidden figure.

This study, based on artifacts from high-ranking kurgans of the northern Black Sea region (700–300 BC), addresses the little-studied bear motif in Scythian culture and its relevance for the ancient inhabitants of this region and of the adjacent territories. It is a wide-held view that the image of the brown bear had been borrowed from the Ananyino culture of the Kama. Variation of this motif is described and its chronology is assessed. Two principal iconographic versions are known in Scythian art—the animal is shown either en face, in the so-called sacrifi cial posture, or drinking (in profi le, with a bowed head). Such representations occur most often on gold-plated ritual bowls and ornaments of the horse harness. Both the chronology and the distribution range of these artifacts disagree with the idea that the bear motif was a loan from forest cultures. Rather, it appears to be inherently Scythian, having originated around 700 BC together with other images of the animal style. Apparently, some form of the bear cult was practiced by the Scythian elite.

Solar-based E-Uniform furnished with better protection to the soldiers who are working in extreme weather. Solar Panels are wont to power up the interior circuitry of the E-uniform. A 12 V DC lead-acid rechargeable battery is employed for storing the energy. We are using a conventional battery charging unit also for giving supply to the circuitry. ATmega16a microcontroller is the heart of the circuit as it controls all the functions. The project is operated in two modes like summer mode and winter mode. By selecting the mode of operation, we are operating the system such that it can drive the body temperature according to heater/cooler. The heater/cooler in turn will help us to provide a cooling or warming effect inside the uniform which helps the soldier to bear any kind of external environment. The metal sensor will detect the metal-like bomb, any other planted weapon in-ground and intimate the soldier with a buzzer indication. The GSM is interfaced with the microcontroller and GPS is additionally interfaced such that the tracking of the whole soldier is observed. And the location is messaged to the particular concerned person /dept. This Uniform will make the soldier work in any kind of environment without any stress or distraction.

The larvae of the two species of Pinjalo are described for the first time based on seven specimens of P. pinjalo (4.3–7.5 mm) and 23 specimens of P. lewisi (5.6–15.0 mm) captured in plankton tows and midwater trawls in the eastern Indian and western Pacific Oceans. Identification was confirmed by fin meristics. These deep-bodied, compressed larvae share all the characteristics of lutjanid larvae, and have some of the most well-developed head spination and fin spines of any lutjanids. The robust spines of the dorsal, anal and pelvic fins bear strong serrations. The preopercular spines are particularly enlarged, some bear fine serrations, and the anterior end of the maxilla also has fine serrations: these fine serrations are rare in lutjanine lutjanids. The two species of Pinjalo can be distinguished by the meristics of dorsal and anal fins, the relative lengths of the first spine of the dorsal fin and the spine of the pelvic fin. The larvae have distinctive pigment on the dorsal fin, head and caudal peduncle. The body shape, pigment pattern, fin-spine morphology, and the fine serrations on the head spines of the two Pinjalo species are very similar to the larvae of Lutjanus erythropterus and L. malabaricus, and may indicate a close relationship among these four species.

Sperm morphology is an useful characteristic for estimating potential fertility. Currently, we are obtaining baseline information on various aspects of reproduction in the brown bear (Ursus arctos) with the intention of using the knowledge to establish a germplasm bank for the species. In the present report, we describe the results obtained using assisted sperm morphology analysis (ASMA, Sperm Class Analyzer®; Microptic S.L, Barcelona, Spain) to analyze the morphological differences in epidydimal (caput, corpus, and cauda) and ejaculated brown bear spermatozoa. A post-mortem epididymal sperm sample was obtained from an adult brown bear after accidental death. The epididymides were excised, washed, and dissected into the three major segments; caput, corpus and cauda. Then multiple incisions were made in the tissue to allow migration of spermatozoa into the surrounding medium. Semen was collected by electroejaculation from five adult brown bears living in a semi-free ranging environment in the Cabarceno Park (Cantabria, Spain). Anesthesia was induced using tiletamine + zolazepan (Zoletil 100®; Virbac, Carras, France; 7 mg/kg), and ketamine (Imalgene 1000®; Rhone Merieux, Lyon, France; 2 mg/kg). The electroejaculation unit (PT Electronics®; Boring, Oregon) was connected to a 3-lateral electrode transrectal probe (26 mm in diameter, 320 mm in length). Ejaculation occurred at 6–10 V/250–300 mA. For head morphometry assessment, sperm samples were fixed in glutaraldehyde and slides were smeared and air-dried for 2 h. The samples were then stained with Diff-Quik® staining (37°C; 10 min in the red component and 15 min in the blue component). The area, perimeter, length and width, and ellipticity (length/width) of heads were measured from at least 100 spermatozoa/slide. As shown in Table 1, values obtained for each measure were similar in both epididymal and ejaculated spermatozoa. These results provide normal morphometry values for brown bear spermatozoa, a potentially useful characteristic for predicting fertility. Table 1. Head morphometry for epididymis and ejaculated bear sperm (mean ± SD) This work was supported in part by CANTUR S.A. and CICYT (CGL 2004–0278/BOS).

A giant short-faced bear ( Arctodus simus ) ulna fragment was found at the base of exposed Quaternary sediments at Cowichan Head, southern Vancouver Island, British Columbia. In this paper, the ulna fragment and its geological context are described and a reasonable taphonomic trajectory is presented. The radiocarbon age of 22 750 ± 140 BP on the bone indicates that these bears were on Vancouver Island during the late Wisconsinan. A likely source for the Cowichan Head A. simus was from the mainland to the southeast.

AbstractA knowledge of variant anatomy is important in clinical practice. The skull bones have several normal anatomical variations, especially in the occipital bone. Accessory sutures have been described in newborns and young children. In this study, we discussed radiological findings of an accessory occipital suture in a 14-year-old child who had presented with mastoiditis and brain abscess. We further describe this “mendosal suture,” and its pathophysiology and clinical implications. It is important to bear this entity in mind to avoid misdiagnosing this as a fracture. The use of CT scans and 3D CT using volume rendering technique (VRT) helps in detection and correct diagnosis.

Titanium implants in facial bones for retention of epitheses or dental bridges were used for reconstruction in cancer patients after tumor surgery. Even heavily irradiated bones could integrate the implants and bear the load from the epithesis. No major complications, such as wound infection, fistulation, or osteoradionecrosis, occurred after implant surgery. There was, however, an increased loss of implants with time after irradiation, especially in the orbital region. When hyperbaric oxygen was used as adjunctive treatment, implant losses were reduced.

A fracture of the head of the femur was identified on CT scan of the pelvis. In his history, the patient had a hospital admission 3 months earlier, during which he had a urinary catheter, and a urine specimen was analysed. The same pathogen was found in the patient urine and in the head of the femur specimen. This is a report of blood-borne spread of Serratia marcescens infection from the urothelium to the hip joint, responsible for spontaneous fracture of the femoral head without history of trauma.

Abstract In this paper, a new type of pick with a large size head is produced by a low-temperature bimetallic composite. The pick head is composed of 60 mm long high chromium cast iron, and the pick handle is 20# steel. They are connected by nickel-based alloy powder. The size of the bonding interface observed by SEM is approximately 1.3 mm. The pick head is mainly composed of M7C3 and M2C compounds with high wear resistance to bear the wear resistance of the pick. The pick handle with outstanding toughness bears the impact of picks. It is also worth mentioning that the impact toughness of the sample reaches 62 J/cm2 and the shear strength is 208 MPa.The hardness of the handle is about 325HV, and the pick head hardness is about 935HV. The hardness gradually increases from the pick handle to the pick head.

The Banasknatha forest division in Gujarat harbours a large number of Sloth Bear (Melursus ursinus) in spite of highly patchy, fragmented and degraded forests, high human population in adjacent villages, enormous agricultural expansion and continuous encroachment on bear habitat, and high cattle grazing pressure. As a result, attacks on human beings and agricultural crop damage by Sloth Bears are sharply evident. Although, Sloth Bears are unpredictable in their attacking behaviour, therefore, it is very important to understand the attacking and mauling behaviour and activity pattern of Sloth Bears, which may help develop the local people to avoid Bears. Forty-seven human injuries occurred from 1968 - 2008 and most of these incidences took place when Bears were active. Information about the attacking behaviour and the nature of human injuries had been collected by intriguing interviews with the mauled victims. In 58% cases, the Sloth Bear charged spontaneously, during daytime, and then attacked repeatedly. Four casualties occurred when a mother and cub(s) were together, 43 attacks were by a single bear. Injuries to the victims included injury to hands (upper half) and legs (lower half), due mainly to biting and used claws (n = 29) and injuries to the head, forehead, face, and body (n =18).

Fossil remains of brown bear from Kaninskaya cave in the northern Ural are described. They were accumulated during the Late Bronze Age, Early Iron Age, and Late Iron Age as a result of human activity. We analyze the composition of skeletal elements and the nature of their fragmentation. Sex and age of individuals whose bones were apparently used in rituals are assessed, and the seasonality of these ceremonies is evaluated. The main object of ceremonial actions during all chronological periods was the head. Crania and mandibles were cracked into several parts according to one and the same fashion. Other skeletal parts were used much less often. Most postcranial bones were likewise broken into several pieces. Such practices differ from modern Ob Ugrian bear rituals. In the Bronze Age, heads of adult male and female bears were used, and the ceremonies were performed mainly in winter, less often in summer and autumn, and very rarely in spring. In the Iron Age, too, heads of adult animals, mostly males, were used, and ceremonies were held throughout the year but more often in summer and in winter. Seasonal bear rites were not practiced. Certain elements of rites, differing from those of modern Ob Ugrians, are reconstructed. Modern Ob Ugrian bear rituals were formed in the Late Iron Age.

Abstract This paper analyzes the internal structure of Argobba nominal phrase in Head-Driven Phrase Structure Grammar (HPSG) formalism. Argobba is a seriously endangered Semitic language in Ethiopia. Unlike its sister languages in the Ethio-Semitic subfamily, Argobba nouns qualified by a demonstrative, possessive pronoun and genitive NP bear a definite article. It is argued in this paper that the definite article is not an independent syntactic element, but an affix, which is attached to indefinite nouns lexically. It is argued that the derivation of Argobba definite common nouns is captured by the Definite Lexical Rule (DLR). The paper also claims that the NP internal agreement of specifiers and modifiers with the head noun is accounted for by the SPEC and MOD features that impose certain constraints on the morphosyntactic features of the head noun.

Having recently observed that survival of red deer spermatozoa after cryopreservation seemed to reflect the size of sperm heads, we hypothesized that cryoresistance of brown bear spermatozoa might also be dependent on head size, since in a preliminary study we had also observed significant differences in sperm head sizes among male brown bears (median values for area 22.2 m2, perimeter 18.2, length 6.1 and width 4.4 m). In the present report, we analyzed the post-thaw survival of spermatozoa of 6 brown bears that were assigned to 2 groups (3 bears/group) based on sperm size: Group A with large-size sperm heads; Group B with small-size heads. Ejaculates were obtained by electroejaculation of adult brown bears (semi-free ranging in Cabarceno Park, Cantabria, Spain) under general anesthesia (7 mg kg-1 tiletamine + zolazepan and 2 mg kg-1 ketamine). Semen was diluted (Tes-Tris-fructose, 8% glycerol, 20% egg yolk, EDTA, and Equex paste), loaded in 0.25-mL straws, and frozen in a biofreezer at 20C min-1 to -100C. After storage in liquid nitrogen, samples were thawed in water at 65C for 6 s and survival was measured. Sperm motility (TM: total, and PM: progressive; %) was assessed microscopically, and sperm viability, acrosome integrity (PI/PNA-FITC), and mitochondrial status (JC-1) were assayed for fresh and thawed sperm by flow cytometry. Recovery rates (RR: thawed/fresh 100) were calculated for all parameters. For measurement of head size, fresh sperm samples were fixed in glutaraldehyde and slides were air-dried for 2 h. The samples were then stained with Diff-Quik staining at 37C. The area (Ar), perimeter (P), length (L), and width (W) of the heads of >100 spermatozoa per slide were measured (Sperm Class Analyzer; Microptic S.L., Barcelona, Spain). Data were analyzed with the SAS ver8 system, and the Wilcoxon test was applied. The respective morphometric dimensions of the 2 groups were practically identical (Ar = 22; P = 18; L = 6; W = 4). The post-thaw recovery rates of spermatozoa from Group A were: TM: 60.1 29.3; PM: 54.8 36.0; viability: 99.4 8.0; acrosomes: 96.2 3.1; mitochondria: 70.9 15.5. The recovery rates for Group B were: TM: 78.7 13.8; PM: 69.0 18.8; viability: 93.8 5.2; acrosomes: 98.2 9.8; mitochondria: 72.5 22.5. Because of the high variability of recovery rates between males within each group, there were no statistical differences between the 2 groups. The absence of differences can be explained by the small number of males examined and the high variability between them. More studies are necessary to determine whether large sperm cells of brown bears are more susceptible to damage during cryopreservation. Geo-hydrology and groundwater exploration manner to pick out and to find the zone of recharge of groundwater in a precise river basin or a catchment .water level contour traces (or waft traces) are much like topographic strains on a map. They fully represent "elevations" in the subsurface. Water table contour lines can be used to inform which manner groundwater will glide in a given region. Plenty of wells are drilled and the hydraulic head is measured in each one. Water desk contours are drawn that be a part of areas of identical head .The ones water table contours lines are also called equipotential strains. Bear in mind: groundwater usually movements from a place of the higher hydraulic head to an area of decrease hydraulic head, and perpendicular to equipotential traces. In our challenge, we put into effect concept of water table contour map and geohydrological studies on Krishnagiri using GIS software program which plays the essential position in contemporary technology.

The physical properties, namely the moisture content of seed (MCs), the seed content of fixed oil (Scfo), the yield of the main fixed oil (Ymfo), the yield of recovered fixed oil (Yrfo), extraction loss (EL), six Efficiency of fixed oil extraction (Efoe), specific gravity (SGfo), refractive index (RI) as well as chemical properties, namely iodine number (IN), saponification value (SV), acid value (AV), and the yield of fatty acid (Yfa) of the four oils extracted by the MHPM and EHPM were determined. Chemical constituents of the resultant oil were identified using GC/MS after saponification and methylation processes. The Ymfo and SV obtained using the MHPM were higher than those for the EHPM for all four fixed oils studied. On the other hand, each of the SGfo, RI, IN, AV, and pH of the fixed oils did not alter statistically due to changing the heating tool from electric band heaters into a microwave beam. The qualities of the four fixed oils extracted by the MHPM were very encouraging as a pivot of the industrial fixed oil projects compared to the EHPM. The prominent fatty acid of the castor fixed oil was found to be ricinoleic acid, making up 76.41% and 71.99% contents of oils extracted using the MHPM and EHPM, respectively. In addition, the oleic acid was the prominent fatty acid in each of the fixed oils of sunflower, rapeseed, and moringa species, and its yield by using the MHPM was higher than that for the EHPM. The role of microwave irradiation in facilitating fixed oil extrusion from the biopolymeric structured organelles (lipid bodies) was protruded. Since it was confirmed by the present study that using microwave irradiation is simple, facile, more eco-friendly, cost-effective, retains parent quality of oils, and allows for the warming of bigger machines and spaces, we think it will make an industrial revolution in oil extraction field.

AbstractHead and neck cancers (HNCs) are the most common malignancies worldwide. Asian populations bear major burden of this disease, with certain unique characteristics. Although significant research in HNCs is ongoing globally, many clinical issues still remain unanswered. We performed a literature search to find noteworthy Indian studies that changed practice of HNC as well as to look for areas for further research in this field. Many randomized controlled trials as well as large patient series are reported in the field of radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and surgical management of HNC. Still, many areas such as palliative therapy, targeted agents, and newer chemotherapeutic agents remain unexplored. Planned collaborative research is need of the hour to provide more evidenced based.

Three video analysis-based applications for the study of captive animal behavior are presented. The aim of the first one is to provide certain parameters to assess drug efficiency by analyzing the movement of a rat. The scene is a three-chamber plastic box. First, the rat can move only in the middle room. The rat’s head pose is the first parameter needed. Secondly, the rodent could walk in all three compartments. The entry number in each area and visit duration are the other indicators used in the final evaluation. The second application is related to a neuroscience experiment. Besides the electroencephalographic (EEG) signals yielded by a radio frequency link from a headset mounted on a monkey, the head placement is a useful source of information for reliable analysis, as well as its orientation. Finally, a fusion method to construct the displacement of a panda bear in a cage and the corresponding motion analysis to recognize its stress states are shown. The arena is a zoological garden that imitates the native environment of a panda bear. This surrounding is monitored by means of four video cameras. We have applied the following stages: (a) panda detection for every video camera; (b) panda path construction from all routes; and (c) panda way filtering and analysis.

Abstract The triple head motif is a visual composition consisting of three heads on a single neck, with three noses, three mouths, but often only one pair of eyes. It appears on at least twenty-four medieval misericords, as well as in other contemporary artistic media throughout Europe. The motif is probably of Celtic origin although it existed also in ancient Greece and Rome. In this article I claim that the usual interpretation of this motif on choir stalls, the Trinity, is incorrect. Other possibilities are: the God Janus, the virtue of Prudence, intensity of emotion, the three ages of man, the three races of man, a symbol of power, a Bacchic Trinity and a Trinity of Hell. The image undoubtedly does not always bear the same meaning. In all cases, the tripling of the head seems to connote power, as it did with triple headed Celtic Gods. It is often a symbol of evil and a crowned tripled head may indicate the Antichrist. Other misericords in the ensemble of stalls and other attributes in the composition must be considered before arriving at a conclusive meaning for this motif.

Cascolus ravitis gen. et sp. nov. is a three-dimensionally preserved fossil crustacean with soft parts from the Herefordshire (Silurian) Lagerstätte, UK. It is characterized by a head with a head shield and five limb pairs, and a thorax (pereon) with nine appendage-bearing segments followed by an apodous abdomen (pleon). All the appendages except the first are biramous and have a gnathobase. The post-mandibular appendages are similar one to another, and bear petal-shaped epipods that probably functioned as a part of the respiratory–circulatory system. Cladistic analysis resolves the new taxon as a stem-group leptostracan (Malacostraca). This well-preserved arthropod provides novel insights into the evolution of appendage morphology, tagmosis and the possible respiratory–circulatory physiology of a basal malacostracan.

Micromorphological and ultrastructural analyses of the leaf trichomes of Salvia fruticosa Mill. were performed by light and electron microscopy. The leaves bear numerous non-glandular unbranched trichomes, and peltate, capitate and digitiform glandular trichomes. Very elongated flagelliform non-glandular trichomes densely covered the leaf surfaces, with especially abundance on the leaf margins. Peltate trichomes consist of a basal epidermal cell, a very short stalk cell and a large round head of eight secretory cells arranged in a circle. Capitate trichomes can be divided into two main types, short-stalked and long-stalked, and further into five subtypes according to the number of stalk cells, morphology and number of glandular head cells. Digitiform trichomes consist of one basal cell, one or two stalk cells and one apical secretory cell, which are of similar diameter and approximately equal length.

This paper analyzes the biographical and related archaeological information of 10 artificially shaped skulls from the broader Maya area, which bear resemblance to the high and narrow head morphology depicted in Olmec art. The skeletal evidence of this head form, which was accomplished by combining compression cradleboards with constricting horizontal wraps (tabular erect type in its pseudo-circular variety), is rare and predates A.D. 250 in all cases. Here I compare the cranial vaults shaped in this fashion with that of 49 other Preclassic period Maya indivisuals from different parts of the Maya world. The discussion explores the possible evolving social and religious roles of this emblematic body modification. I argue that Olmecoid head modification was a syncretic cultural adoption, since it was just one of many expressions of a deeply embedded Preclassic tradition, still practiced centuries after the demise of Olman’s societies themselves. The visible effect of the artificial pear-shaped heads most likely reflected gradual shifting ideological schemes, probably emulating early versions of the Maya Maize God, given the resemblance to Preclassic period renderings of this supernatural force.

Abstract Juxtaposition as a machinery of building noun phrases is well-known to be widespread in Uralic languages: the modifier is left-adjoined to the head and does not bear any morphological marker of syntactic dependency. This strategy is used to attach adjectives, cardinals and modifying nominals to nouns (like in Beserman ǯ́aǯ́eg siĺ ‘goose meat’), and to build constructions with measure nouns (like Beserman odig kə̑də̑ gibi ‘one basket of mushrooms’, lit. one basket mushroom). However, there remains a question whether all these constructions share the same syntactic structure. We consider pseudopartitive constructions with measure nouns in comparison with NPs containing non-marked modifying nominals and NPs with adjectives, showing that they do not share the same syntactic structure. Constructions with unmarked modifying nominals show properties of compounding, while pseudopartitives arguably have a measure phrase (a cardinal with a measure noun) and a noun phrase (the quantified nominal), which is the head of the pseudopartitive construction. The syntactic properties we analyze include constituent properties, branching, pronominalization, fragment questions, linear ordering restrictions, particular properties of head ellipsis, and information structure effects.

Introduction: Pipkin type 4 fracture is defined as hip dislocation with femoral head fracture and concomitant acetabular rim fracture. These fractures are rare. Neglected fractures develop adaptive changes in the acetabulum, femoral head, and soft tissues around the hip joint, leading to hip arthritis. Total hip arthroplasty is preferred in such cases. After an extensive literature review, we did not find any guidelines for managing neglected Pipkin type 4 fractures. Case Report: A 47-year-old male presented with pain in his left hip and an inability to bear weight on his left lower limb. He had a road traffic accident 1 year ago. On clinical examination, there was a shortening of 3 cm and reduced hip range of motion on 3D computed tomography posterosuperior defect of the acetabular wall along with Pipkin type 4 femoral head fracture was detected. Total hip arthroplasty with acetabular reconstruction using a femoral head autograft was done. At 1 year of follow-up, the patient was pain-free and could walk without any assistance with a normal gait. Conclusion: Uncemented total hip arthroplasty with an autologous structural femoral head graft is a suitable method of treatment for neglected Pipkin type 4 fractures. It preserves bone stock and does not add any financial burden. Keywords: Pipkin type 4, neglected acetabular fracture, total hip arthroplasty.

The segmental architecture of the arthropod head is one of the most controversial topics in the evolutionary developmental biology of arthropods. The deutocerebral (second) segment of the head is putatively homologous across Arthropoda, as inferred from the segmental distribution of the tripartite brain and the absence of Hox gene expression of this anterior-most, appendage-bearing segment. While this homology statement implies a putative common mechanism for differentiation of deutocerebral appendages across arthropods, experimental data for deutocerebral appendage fate specification are limited to winged insects. Mandibulates (hexapods, crustaceans and myriapods) bear a characteristic pair of antennae on the deutocerebral segment, whereas chelicerates (e.g. spiders, scorpions, harvestmen) bear the eponymous chelicerae. In such hexapods as the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster , and the cricket, Gryllus bimaculatus , cephalic appendages are differentiated from the thoracic appendages (legs) by the activity of the appendage patterning gene homothorax ( hth ). Here we show that embryonic RNA interference against hth in the harvestman Phalangium opilio results in homeonotic chelicera-to-leg transformations, and also in some cases pedipalp-to-leg transformations. In more strongly affected embryos, adjacent appendages undergo fusion and/or truncation, and legs display proximal defects, suggesting conservation of additional functions of hth in patterning the antero-posterior and proximo-distal appendage axes. Expression signal of anterior Hox genes labial , proboscipedia and Deformed is diminished, but not absent, in hth RNAi embryos, consistent with results previously obtained with the insect G. bimaculatus . Our results substantiate a deep homology across arthropods of the mechanism whereby cephalic appendages are differentiated from locomotory appendages.

Abstract As a central feature of the annual fiesta, the Maya cuch ceremony and its various transformations have been a staple of ethnographic description for more than fifty years. Through this investiture ceremony, responsibility for organizing the fiesta is passed from one religious confraternity to another. Although descriptions of the cuch abound, the ethnography ofperformance remains fragmented. Ethnographies tend to privilege or essentialize particular performances and ignore variants that violate the ethnographer’s notion of authenticity. Indeed, the multiplicity of labels in Spanish and Maya used to describe the cuch and its transformations-cuch, k’ub pol, okostah pol, baile del cochino, etc.-leaves the impression that different enactments or performances bear little or no relation to one another. In contrast, the present article demonstrates the dialogical relations between various transformations of the cuch-pious, satirical, and folkloric-as an aid to interpreting more heterodox performances. In particular, following Bakhtin, the author argues that the rich parody which permeates the k’ub pol-a transformation of the cuch performed on some former henequén plantations-is invariably lost, or reduced to an innocent burlesque, if one fails to recognize its relationship to more sober, "Catholic" interpretations of the cuch.

Vigilance refers to the capability of humans to respond accordingly to relevant and unpredictable tasks and surrounding environment changes over prolonged periods of time. Identifying vigilance decrements can, therefore, have huge and vital impacts on several operational environments in which a simple slip of mind or a deficit in attention can bear life-threatening and disastrous consequences. Several methodologies have been proposed to assess and characterize vigilance, and the results have indicated that the sole measure of performance and self-reports are not enough to obtain reliable and real-time vigilance measure. Nowadays, monitoring head and body movements to obtain information about performance in daily activities, health conditions, and mental states has become very simple and cheap due to the miniaturization of inertial measurement units and their widespread integration into common electronic devices (e.g., smart glasses, smartwatches). The present study aimed to understand the relationship between head micromovements and body posture changes to vigilance decrease while performing the psychomotor vigilance task. The results highlighted that head micromovements can be employed to track vigilance decrement during prolonged periods of time and discriminate between conditions of high or low vigilance.

We begin by reviewing data from Korean, Turkish, Italian and Spanish-speaking adults acquiring German without formal instruction. Our findings have shown that these learners transfer their L1 VPs: the Korean and Turkish speakers transfer a head-final VP and the Italian and Spanish speakers first transfer a head-initial VP and then switch its headedness to the correct, head-final value for German. Although functional projections in Korean and Turkish are head-final and in Italian and Spanish head-initial, all four groups of learners subsequently posit head-initial functional projections in German (which are not always target-like). We conclude that only lexical projections constitute the L2 learner's initial state; the development of functional projections is driven solely by the interaction of X'-Theory with the target-language input. We then discuss some studies on the acquisition of French by English speakers and of English by speakers of various L1s which purport to bring evidence to bear against our approach. Upon closer examination, the evidence turns out to offer further support for the position that the sole projections which the learner transfers from the L1 are lexical ones. Finally, we account for potentially problematic verb-raising data from French learners of English. Rather than taking the stance that French raising to Agr is transferred, we propose that L2 learners' identification of free morphemes as salient triggers leads to a misanalysis of verb raising in English. We also apply this idea to a reanalysis of the morpheme-order studies of the 1970s.

Object The uncovertebral joints are peculiar but clinically important anatomical structures of the cervical vertebrae. In the aged or degenerative cervical spine, osteophytes arising from an uncovertebral joint can cause cervical radiculopathy, often necessitating decompression surgery. Although these joints are believed to bear some relationship to head rotation, how the uncovertebral joints work during head rotation remains unclear. The purpose of this study is to elucidate 3D motion of the uncovertebral joints during head rotation. Methods Study participants were 10 healthy volunteers who underwent 3D MRI of the cervical spine in 11 positions during head rotation: neutral (0°) and 15° increments to maximal head rotation on each side (left and right). Relative motions of the cervical spine were calculated by automatically superimposing a segmented 3D MR image of the vertebra in the neutral position over images of each position using the volume registration method. The 3D intervertebral motions of all 10 volunteers were standardized, and the 3D motion of uncovertebral joints was visualized on animations using data for the standardized motion. Inferred contact areas of uncovertebral joints were also calculated using a proximity mapping technique. Results The 3D animation of uncovertebral joints during head rotation showed that the joints alternate between contact and separation. Inferred contact areas of uncovertebral joints were situated directly lateral at the middle cervical spine and dorsolateral at the lower cervical spine. With increasing angle of rotation, inferred contact areas increased in the middle cervical spine, whereas areas in the lower cervical spine slightly decreased. Conclusions In this study, the 3D motions of uncovertebral joints during head rotation were depicted precisely for the first time.

The Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) is spread widely in many applications due to its portable, cost-effective, and user-friendly approach. This needs to adopt routing schemes to forward the sensed information to the sink nodes or base station through minimum-cost links. The frequently utilized data accumulation approach is clustering which organizes the nodes into clutches to minimize the consumption of energy. Likewise, in clustering protocols, the additional load will be bear by the Cluster Head (CH) for organizing various deeds inside the cluster. As a result, appropriate CH selection and their power balance using efficient clustering protocol are significant features for the long-term operation of the Wireless Sensor Network (WSN). In this paper, An Energy-Aware Cluster Head Selection Protocol based on Multi-Objective Dolphin Swarm Optimization (EACHP-MODSO) is proposed to enrich the lifetime of Wireless Sensor Network (WSN). This proposed method considers six criteria to select effective Cluster Head like residual energy, inter cluster distance, intra-cluster distance, mobility, node density, and delay. The results of the proposed system show better enhancement of network lifetime compared to existing protocols.

In the real world, traumatic injuries are measured using the Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS), however, such a scale cannot be computed to date or the injury precisely located by using human computer models. These models use stresses and strains to evaluate whether serious or fatal injuries are reached, which unfortunately bear no direct relation to AIS. This paper proposes to overcome this deficiency and suggests a unique Organ Trauma Model (OTM) able to calculate the risk to life of any organ injury, focussing in this case on real-life pedestrian head injuries. The OTM uses a power method, named Peak Virtual Power (PVP), and defines a brain white and gray matters trauma response as a function of impact direction and impact speed. The OTM was tested against four real-life pedestrian accidents and proved to predict the head trauma severity and location. In some cases, the method did however under-estimate the trauma by 1 AIS level because of post-impact haemorrhage which cannot be captured with Lagrangian Finite Element solvers. The OTM has the potential to create an important advance in vehicle safety by adding more information on the risk of head trauma.

The genus Biapertura Smirnov, 1971, with type species B. affinis (= Lynceus affinis Leydig, 1860) is re-evaluated, removing the affinis-group from polyphyletic Alona s. lato. Biapertura s. str. is a taxon which could be defined by large size (up to 1.1 mm), having head shield with triangular posterior portion and two connected major head pores, and by having massive postabdomen with over 10 well-developed composite marginal denticles and well-developed lateral fascicles of setulae. Thoracic limbs of Biapertura are of Hexalona-type, inner distal lobe of limb I bear extremely large, usually claw-like seta 1. Australian species of the genus, B. kendallensis (Henry, 1919) and B. elliptica (Sinev, 1997), are fully redescribed here. Morphological analysis suggests that Biapertura s. str. is a sister-group to Alona s. str. A key to seven species of the genus is provided and a discussion of their geographic distribution and habitat type is given.

We examined the relationship between environmental factors of a spawning habitat and body shape at maturity in 16 pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) populations. The divergence vector (indicator of body depth and head size development) in both sexes was significantly correlated with distance from the sea and was described by a hump-shaped relationship. An exaggerated body shape was most developed at mid-distance from the sea and less developed both near and far from the sea. The observed frequency of bears decreased significantly with distance from the sea, implying that bear predation on salmon is most intense near the sea. Therefore, our results imply that shape-selective predation by bears affects the shape of pink salmon in rivers where the spawning habitat is near the sea and that migration costs inhibit development of an exaggerated body depth and head size in salmon in rivers where the spawning habitat is far from the sea.

The Danish pseudopartitive constructions differ in their possibilities of definiteness marking: the Indirect Partitive Construction (IPC) (D N1 P N2) permits N1 to bear the definite suffix, while the Direct Partitive Construction (DPC) (D N1 N2) does not; in addition, neither construction permits the prenominal definite article in the absence of a prenominal modifier. Drawing on previous work regarding the morphosyntax of definiteness marking in Danish, we use the distribution of definiteness marking as a probe to illuminate the structure of the pseudopartitive constructions. Our conclusion is that despite superficial similarities the two constructions are quite different in structure, the IPC having a lexical N head and a PP complement, and the DPC a functional n head with an NP complement, forming a single extended projection of N2. These assumptions allow us to account for a number of differences in the behavior of these constructions, shedding light on the nature of pseudopartitives as well as on the theory of extended projections.

Recurrent/metastatic (R/M) head and neck cancers bear a poor prognosis. In this analysis, we examined the efficacy and the outcome of targeted therapy recommendations based on the patients’ molecular tumor portrait after failure of all standard therapy options. In this single-center, real-world retrospective analysis of our platform for precision medicine, we analyzed the molecular profile of 50 patients diagnosed with R/M head and neck cancer. Tumor samples of the patients were examined using next-generation sequencing panels of mutation hotspots, microsatellite instability (MSI) testing, and immunohistochemistry (IHC). In 31 cases (62.0% of all patients), a molecular-driven targeted therapy approach was recommended. Eventually, 14 patients (28%) received the suggested targeted therapy. Six of fourteen patients (43%) achieved stable disease conditions and four patients (29%) experienced a progressive disease. The median time to treatment failure was 2.8 months. Therapy recommendations were significantly more often issued for men (p = 0.037) than for women. This analysis demonstrated that precision medicine provided the basis for molecular-driven therapy recommendations in over half of the patients with advanced therapy refractory head and neck cancers, with significantly more therapy recommendations for men. Our analysis showed that although precision medicine approaches are implementable and feasible for the management of recurrent/metastatic head and neck cancers in daily clinical routine, there are major limitations and challenges that have to be overcome.
