Texto completo da fontePeople today are "on the move"; social changes -globalization, tourism, mobile technologies, and intensive consumerism- are implicated in the ever increasing movement of people, things, information and ideas around the globe. Overall, it is possible to find in a city such as Barcelona these increasing movements. So that, in a short walk through the streets of historical center of Barcelona brings to every passer-by in contact with tourists, local people, consumers, formal workers and itinerant economic activities; with these I refer to a set of social practices whereby both musical and non musical performances (mimes, puppeteers, clowns, jugglers and others) and vendors are constantly on the move because they are itinerant workers. This thesis is about the movement of this heterogeneous group of people, their social practices and psycho-social processes in the public space. At the same time, it shows different types of implementation of mobile techniques in an urban ethnographic study. I use techniques such as: drifts, "walking with", mobile interview, and mobile participant observation in a field work with itinerant economic activities. I emphasize the appropriateness of using these techniques from social psychology in studies of public space in order to contribute to knowledge of relations in the contemporary life in the same place of their production.

Texto completo da fonteThe title of the thesis combines the concepts of city and novel. As regards city, the chosen ones are Barcelona and Shanghai: two cities very similar for their geographical situation, level of development and degree of importance in their respective countries, but at the same time with great differences, due to their belonging to cultures very different. The stories of both have parallel points: they pass during a period of rapid development, mainly at the beginning of the twentieth century, and later, the two cities similarly suffered the consequences of wars and passed the dark ages until the 70s. However, both the background and details of those events such as the change in the shape and spaces of the city, as well as the influence they exert on the novels in which they are represented, actually show us the difference not only of two different cities but also the mark of two cultures that are on two sides of the continent. Through the novels that take place in Barcelona and Shanghai of the twentieth century, the intention of this work is to investigate the representation in the novel of the spaces of two similar cities but that belong to two worlds, the west and the east.

Texto completo da fonteThe expansion of metropolitan areas globally has had an impact on the daily life of its residents through the increase in the distances they must travel to carry out their daily activities, which affects their quality of life and, at the same time, the sustainability of these territories. However, additional questions must be raised: Beyond the territorial structure, are there other characteristics of the urban built environment that determine the spatial behaviour of people? Can these territories be perceived differently by their residents, giving place to different patterns of mobility? Are there differences according to the individual profile of the residents? If these factors are determinant, how do they interact? In order to answer these questions, this research aims to understand the configuration of the spatial dimension of daily mobility in the Metropolitan Region of Barcelona. The main hypothesis of this thesis points that the space used by residents in metropolitan areas is influenced by the combination of different factors such as the characteristics of the built environment, cognitive processes and individual characteristics of people. To achieve this, new data sources obtained from Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) will be used, which allow to obtain highly detailed time-space information on the spatial behaviour of people as has never been before. This doctoral thesis is based on four case studies, in the form of scientific articles in indexed international journals, which explore the effect of different spatial behaviour conditioning factors. The results obtained can inform future urban planning strategies aimed at reducing the spatial extent resulting from the daily mobility patterns of residents in metropolitan areas.
Ospina, Tascón Juan José. "Las Ramblas de Barcelona. Una aportación al estudio de ciudades mediterráneas". Doctoral thesis, Universitat Ramon Llull, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/145721.
This thesis is presented as a contribution to the study of urban Mediterranean cities that grew attached to streams or watercourses, whose most significant example is the Ramblas of Barcelona. The aim of the thesis is to analyze the role played by the streams in different historical periods, from different functions as runoff axis, territorial limit, promenade or public space. The methodology of the study consisted on a literary inquiry of ancient historical and cartographic materials from different Mediterranean cities linked to ramblas. The footage collected was compared with satellite photographs and digital files updated in CAD format. The documentation obtained was complemented by an empirical study based on observation, made from field visits. The thesis is divided into three chapters: The first chapter contains generalities about the streams, forms of urban growth and interventions in different Mediterranean cities. This chapter includes two annexes. Annex I describes the stream transformations in desert cities as Shibam in Yemen and Jerash in Jordan. Annex II describes the growth of some Mediterranean cities in which the stream has been the main configurator of the urban form. Chapter II focuses in the Ramblas of Barcelona. In this city, history and urban growth have been closely linked and conditioned by the streams. Before the thirteenth century, the stream crossed the field without affecting the Roman walled city. Later on, the Ramblas played the role of a territorial limit, supplementing the walls that were demolished in the nineteenth century, as in other European cities. The demolition was based on hygienists theories and new models of city implemented by Baron Haussmann in Paris and Edwin Chadwick in London. The third chapter contains a detailed study of the urban interventions performed on the street now called "Las Ramblas" that are today a public irregular space, whose morphology denotes the permanent presence of the old stream. Different authors, like geographers, journalists and historians have studied the historical and social evolution of this street. However, despite the great interest related to the Ramblas, there are a few studies targeted on its urban dimension, regarding their character as a public space. Unpublished archive material constitutes one of the main contributions of the thesis. An anonymous plan of the eighteenth century allowed to recognize the transformation of each of the sections of the Ramblas, once demolished the walls. The proposals to turn the Ramblas into a boulevard, in 1863, and again in 1924, are also discussed. Finally, the study of the Ramblas as a public space has led to evaluate different interventions in the furniture, lighting, trees and other elements of the public space, and their formal characteristics.

Texto completo da fonteThe present dissertation approaches Lesseps Square in Barcelona as an urban controversy. Rather than conceiving it as self-evident reality in which a predictable and continuous social dynamics would take place, the particular focus on the controversial, multiple and plural identity of the square allows the emergence –during the research– of some phenomena and agencies that are generally shadowed in conventional analyses on public spaces. In this way, paving, topographic inclination, participatory processes, children, neighborhood’s associations, planning documents, public libraries, roadwork, roadway transit, architectural design, ornamental elements, etc. are all protagonists in/of a study of a public space that intents to reveal the multiple, heterogeneous and contingent condition of such places. The study is constituted of three central chapters accompanied by a methodological chapter, an introduction, conclusions and a case file of cartographical documentation. Departing from a short reflection on the hegemonic notion of public space existing in Barcelona at the change of the millennium, the methodological chapter mobilizes ANT (Actor-Network-Theory), the NRT (Non-Representational-Theory) and the affective turn to build an alternative conceptualization that avoids domesticating public space. The first chapter includes an historical reconstruction of the two main episodes of planning controversy that took place at the contemporaneous Lesseps Square. Being aware that, at least from the ’70, Lesseps Square carries the stigma of being a problematic, polemic and conflictive place, I have conceived the chapter as an opportunity to find out why this particular site of Barcelona has sedimented into the collective imaginary of the city as a wicked space, a hole for which it seemed impossible to find a satisfactory solution that would restore the consensus. The second chapter represents a study of the lived space of Lesseps Square. Surging from the will of mapping the presences and describing in a detailed way the daily life of the square, it intends to shed light on the different “agencements that occurred in the recently remodeled space. That “other possible Lesseps Square” claimed firmly by the neighborhood at the beginning of the years 2000, is than confronted to an exhaustive description of its spatial everyday life. Finally the third chapter develops some of the strongest ideas of the thesis. Some of the lacks around consensus and conviviality, that the formalization of Lesseps Square clearly shows, seemed to be avoided in the Jaume Fuster library, an equipment inaugurated in the perimeter of the square four years before the last refurbishment and that, according to the testimonies of informants, had acquired the consensus from the beginning. It is in this chapter that the main theoretical challenges –namely ontological agnosticism, affective turn and non-human agencies– expressed themselves more directly. By means of the alliance between ANT and NRT, the chapter explores the assemblage of the library through the notion of affect.
García, Ferrer Raúl. "Urbanitas y urbanismos. Recorridos etnográficos para entender la interrelación entre entornos construidos y usuarios en el espacio público de Barcelona". Doctoral thesis, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/287885.
Texto completo da fonteThis thesis questions the interrelationships between the city’s built spaces and people who inhabit it. It seeks to uncover the reciprocity between the urban physical environment and the people who use it. Barcelona is chosen as a public privileged space for ethnographic information production in their material and social elements. As a working method we propose participant observation over three "ethnographic itineraries" in Barcelona’s public spaces. These itineraries limit our object of study and are structured by the researcher walking procedure. The three walks start in the historical center and culminate at the edges of the city going through many neighbourhoods which provide for direct access to urban and social diversity. From the theoretical thinking of the sociologist and philosopher Henri Lefebvre, urban space is understood as a social production, therefore related to a dominant production and reproduction mode. Also, Lefebvre’s theory of the three stages of space or "space trialectics" is applied in analysing produced information. This conceptual triad suggests that space can be analyzed by their spatial practices, representations of space and spaces of representation, or similarly: perceived space, conceived space and lived space. The result of ethnographic fieldwork and secondary documentation sources are analyzed under these concepts showing the resulting interactions as a drama of actors, performers, stage and backstage elements. The public space in Barcelona, studied by the ethnographic itineraries, is the result of a continuous interaction process of the three moments of the space. This thesis has identified them through the observation of their habits and social activities, its urbanism and its architecture, their signs and their regulations.

Texto completo da fonteIn this doctoral dissertation I intent to analyze the social interaction that takes place on urban public spaces located in three different societies: Barcelona, Austin and Saltillo. For such effect, I chose as scenario their most visited parks as well as the streets around these parks. This type of place appeared as a remarkable site for encounters, rest, leisure or to isolate from other private places. In Barcelona, I made fieldwork in Catalonia Square as well as in the streets around it. In Austin, I basically observed the Main Building Park at UT Austin. In Saltillo, I chose a small neighborhood park at Colonia Jardines de Valle. This work has been elaborated under the Strauss and Corbin approach on Grounded Theory as well as under Blumer’s Symbolic Interactionism. It also integrates research tools proposed by Lyn H. and John Lofland for the analysis of urban phenomena in its public spaces. Under this framework, I intent to present the logic and the forms that could explain the dynamics of public interaction in city parks. Conclusions are that some variables seem to be constantly in mind when users decide the strategies for approaching these places. Differences on uses and on symbolic interpretation in each urban park, seem to correspond to the actual socio-political context where they are placed.

This thesis developments three perspectives about how the public space has been managed in the neoliberal era in Barcelona. First, it has been analysed how the local investments are localised, distributed and classified in the public space in Barcelona City. Second, the research shows how different areas the both districts, Ciutat Vella and Nou Barris, have been transformed and designed. Finally, the last analysis examines how the spatial transformations, mentioned above, have influenced upon the social relationship of the users in the studied areas. Municipal management about public space in Barcelona City increasingly articulates the impulses of capitalist production rather than social reproduction. This process is consolidated in Ciutat Vella but, also, in Barcelona City. In Nou Barris, a homogenised design, similar to the rest of the city, has replaced a more paternalist management of the space.

Texto completo da fonteThe origins of the scientific press back to regular practices knowledge transfer arising from the so-called “Republic of Letters”, between 1550 and 1750, in particular publications appeared in the royal academies or erudite societies of the Old Regime. Regarding its type, medical journals appeared in the early twentieth century and presented a variety of format and frequency of publication, themes, institutional departments and specializations. Barcelona, home of a powerful publishing industry, became one of the most important places for publications of medical journals, books and magazines in the field medicine and in spanish language. La Medicina Catalana. Portantveu de l’Occitània mèdica (LMC) is a representative journal of the ‘catalanisme mèdic’, and is a particular fact within the scientific scene of two European Countries, France and Spain, with a long centralized tradition: the aspiration of catalan and occitans doctors, from the french Midi, to create their own space - l'Occitània Medica, subtitle of the journal - of scientific communication beyond the imperatives set by the French and Spanish states. The first issue of LMC appeared in October 1933, coinciding with autonomy of university, the reform of the studies of medicine at University of Barcelona and the beginning of the official status of Catalan language, which promotes publications and public use of the native language. Its director, Dr. Leandre Cervera Astor, along with the editor and Josep Miracle Montserrat and Ismael Girard from Tolosa de Llenguadoc, achieved the publication stayed until 1939, when military troops of Franco occupied Barcelona and banned publications in catalan language. Using the catalan as a vehicle for communication, LMC gave place in its pages to original articles and abstracts, properly translated and commented, articles previously published in international journals and in different languages. Furthermore, LMC included sections such as "Occitània medica" and "Noticiari d’activitats ", which concerned medical activities carried out, and also planned, as well as news and medical informations occurred in the territories of Catalonia and Occitan, which is the geographical triangle Alacant-Bordeaus-Marsella, which had then about 10 million habitants. LMC implies the existence, in Catalonia and its area of language influence including the south of France, a readership audience composed of medical professionals, and probably of other health sectors, who regularly update their knowledge in catalan according to some areas of interest that corresponded with medical specialties in use. It was a periodical conceived and designed by the tension between divergent forces that tended towards diversification of medical sciences, and converging forces that prevented fragmentation of knowledge in different health professions. Since the first issue of the magazine livelihood depended not so much by potential subscribers as a source of economic entries, but from advertising especially in the pharmaceutical industry. This thesis is part of a research, which began more than a decade ago, about the medicine in Catalonia in the first half of the twentieth century, a period in which, especially in the city of Barcelona and its metropolitan area, the so-called laboratory medicine and a wide range of medical specialties were consolidated together with a powerful publishing sector in the field of medicine.
