Although barbering is common in laboratory mice ( Mus musculus), little is known about its effects, both on animal welfare and the research data collected from barbered mice. To gain information on the occurrence of barbering and related risk factors in animal facilities in Germany, we performed an online survey. All the respondents (n = 32 animal facilities) had experienced barbering in their facility. In most cases, less than 10% of the mice were affected, and the age of onset was mostly observed to be 2 to < 6 months. A greater susceptibility was reported in females and in C57BL/6 mice, but this could not be verified as the prevalence of females and the C57BL/6 strain was unknown. One facility reported differences in barbering between commercial animal suppliers. Barbering was also recorded in mice provided with enrichments, such as houses, wood-gnawing blocks, tunnels, running wheels/discs or cage dividers. None of the responding facilities provided swings, structural elements such as an elevated platform or foraging and cognitive enrichment. The questions of whether barbering may have an impact on study results and whether victims of barbering can be used for experiments revealed mixed opinions, most likely due to a lack of data on potential effects. This survey clearly demonstrated barbering to be a widely underestimated problem that is not given enough attention. We suggest that the occurrence of barbering should be systematically documented in every animal facility and reported in research articles, to provide a greater understanding of barbering and its potential effects.

Introduction: This study aimed to determine the level and predictors of Knowledge, Attitude and Practice (KAP) among barbers regarding health hazards associated with their profession in Fiji. Methods: A quantitative study was used to assess the levels and predictors of KAP using a structured questionnaire among 117 barbers who were chosen between June and November 2020 in Suva, Fiji. All those barbershops that operated at least for 6 months, were licensed, and 18 years and above were included. A self-administrative closed-ended structured questionnaire was used to collect data. The level of KAP was assessed using the modified Bloom’s cut-off points. A correlation test was used to determine predictors of KAP. Results: The majority of participants had a medium level of knowledge (62.4%), medium level of attitude (63.2%), and low level of practice (64.1%) towards health hazards associated with barbering the profession. However, 28.2% had low knowledge and attitude scores. The major source of knowledge was through the internet. The results of the correlation test showed that religion, education level, and weekly income were significantly correlated with knowledge (<.05) whereas age and weekly income was significantly correlated with the level of attitude of participants towards health hazards associated with their profession (<.05). Conclusion: Barbers had medium knowledge and attitude towards health hazards associated with the barbering profession while their practice was poor. These findings call for prompt and target group interventions such as strengthening enforcement, awareness, training on equipment decontamination and Good Hygiene Practices to be conducted.

Objectives The aim of this study was to assess the impact of onychectomy (declawing) upon subsequent development of back pain and unwanted behavior in cohorts of treated and control cats housed in two different locations. Methods This was a retrospective cohort study. In total, there was 137 declawed and 137 non-declawed cats, of which 176 were owned cats (88 declawed, 88 non-declawed) and 98 were shelter cats (49 declawed and 49 non-declawed). All cats were physically examined for signs of pain and barbering. The previous 2 years of medical history were reviewed for documented unwanted behavior such as inappropriate elimination and biting with minimal provocation and aggression. All declawed cats were radiographed for distal limb abnormalities, including P3 (third phalanx) bone fragments. The associations of declaw surgery with the outcomes of interest were examined using χ2 analysis, two sample t-tests and manual, backwards, stepwise logistic regression. Results Significant increases in the odds of back pain (odds ratio [OR] 2.9), periuria/perichezia (OR 7.2), biting (OR 4.5) and barbering (OR 3.06) occurred in declawed compared with control cats. Of the 137 declawed cats, 86 (63%) showed radiographic evidence of residual P3 fragments. The odds of back pain (OR 2.66), periuria/perichezia (OR 2.52) and aggression (OR 8.9) were significantly increased in declawed cats with retained P3 fragments compared with those declawed cats without. Optimal surgical technique, with removal of P3 in its entirety, was associated with fewer adverse outcomes and lower odds of these outcomes, but operated animals remained at increased odds of biting (OR 3.0) and undesirable habits of elimination (OR 4.0) compared with non-surgical controls. Conclusions and relevance Declawing cats increases the risk of unwanted behaviors and may increase risk for developing back pain. Evidence of inadequate surgical technique was common in the study population. Among declawed cats, retained P3 fragments further increased the risk of developing back pain and adverse behaviors. The use of optimal surgical technique does not eliminate the risk of adverse behavior subsequent to onychectomy.

Arsenic exposure has been associated with sensory, motor, memory, and learning alterations in humans and alterations in locomotor activity, behavioral tasks, and neurotransmitters systems in rodents. In this study, CD1 mice were exposed to 0.5 or 5.0 mg As/L of drinking water for 6 months. Locomotor activity, aggression, interspecific behavior and physical appearance, monoamines levels, and expression of the messenger for dopamine receptors D1 and D2 were assessed. Arsenic exposure produced hypoactivity at six months and other behaviors such as rearing and on-wall rearing and barbering showed both increases and decreases. No alterations on aggressive behavior or monoamines levels in striatum or frontal cortex were observed. A significant decrease in the expression of mRNA for D2 receptors was found in striatum of mice exposed to 5.0 mg As/L. This study provides evidence for the use of dopamine receptor D2 as potential target of arsenic toxicity in the dopaminergic system.

BACKGROUND: The barbers’ work is associated to many infectious diseases which lead to major cause of morbidity and mortality in human’s population globally. This study aimed to determine barbers’ practices and health hazards associated with their profession in Fiji. MATERIALS & METHODS: A cross sectional quantitative study was conducted to collect data from 50 observational sessions among barbers in Suva, Fiji in 2020. A sample of 25 barbers were randomly selected to participate in this study. A checklist was used to record and collect data. Out of the 25 barbershops observed none of them carried out any form of sterilization. RESULTS: Only 4 (16%) did some form of disinfection with home bleach and savalon randomly while 84% did not have any form of decontamination in place. The results further illustrate that 22 (88%) of the disinfection were not potent while 3 (12%) were unknown. Similarly, 22 (88%) had inappropriate methods of disinfection and 3 (12%) were questionable. None of the barbershops observed had supply of hot water and only 15 (60%) had sufficient privy and hand washing facilities. Furthermore, only 6 (24%) used PPEs compared to 19 (76%) were in non-compliance. CONCLUSION: This finding calls for immediate attention of authorities to enforce relevant laws and create awareness and training to improve standards in barbering profession.

Many captive animals show forms of pelage loss that are absent in wild or free-living con-specifics, which result from grooming or plucking behaviours directed at themselves or at other individuals. For instance, dorsal hair loss in primates such as rhesus macaques ( Macaca mulatta) in research facilities, results from excessive hair-pulling or over-grooming by cage-mates. This behaviour appears to be associated with stress, and is controllable to some extent with environmental enrichment. Quantifying alopecia in primates (as in many species) is therefore potentially useful for welfare assessment. A simple system for scoring alopecia was developed and its reliability was tested. Study 1 showed high interobserver reliability between two independent scorers in assessing the state of monkeys’ coats from photographs. Study 2 showed that there were no significant differences between the scores derived from photographs and from direct observations. Thus, where hair loss due to hair pulling exists in captive primates, this scoring system provides an easy, rapid, and validated quantitative method, for use in assessing the success of attempts to reduce it via improved husbandry. In the future, such scoring systems might also prove useful for quantifying barbering in laboratory rodents.

Background Trichotillomania (TTM) is an impulse control disorder characterized by repetitive hair pulling/trimming. Barbering behavior (BB) observed in laboratory animals is proposed as a model of TTM. The neurobiological basis of TTM is unclear, but involves striatal hyperactivity and hypoactivation of the prefrontal cortex. Methods In this study, we evaluated the BB in knockout mice for the inducible isoform of nitric oxide synthase (NOS2KO) and the consequences of silencing this enzyme in PC12 cell differentiation. Results NOS2KO exhibit exacerbated BB, starting four weeks of age, and increased repetitive movements compared to wild-type mice (WT). The expression of BB was attenuated by repeated treatment with clomipramine, a clinically approved drug to treat TTM in humans, or memantine, an antagonist of NMDA receptors, as well as partial rescue of NOS2 expression in haploinsufficient animals. The silencing of NOS2 expression reduced the MAP2 (microtubule-associated protein 2) levels in activity-induced differentiated PC12 cells. Discussion Our data led us to propose that NOS2 is putatively involved in the neuronal maturation of the inhibitory afferent pathways during neurodevelopment, and such inadequate inhibition of motor programs might be associated to the observed phenotype.

Purpose – Rural entrepreneurship development and employment generation are fundamental to enhancing local-level progress and transformation. Achieving gainful employment in rural communities contributes immensely to the realisation of the potential of people living in remote communities. The purpose of this paper is to present a ten-stage practical approach for enhancing rural entrepreneurship development as a major driver of local community transformation and development. Design/methodology/approach – The action research was preceded by a preliminary study, which identified some crucial factors associated with the success of rural entrepreneurial activities in rural Lagos, Nigeria. The research, which is an offshoot of the earlier field survey, was designed to engage viable community-based organisations (CBOs) in Ikorodu, Epe, Badagry and Lekki communities for the implementation of context-specific rural entrepreneurship development projects through the provision of “non-serviceable” revolving loans. Findings – Successful funded rural entrepreneurs and CBOs served as veritable models for driving entrepreneurship development and employment promotion in rural Lagos, Nigeria. Projects funded included artisanal fisheries, barbering salons, piggeries and snail production. Practical implications – The projects which generated employment opportunities for rural youths and other able-bodied community members serve as a strategy for lifting people out of poverty. The action research was designed to inform rural development policy in Nigeria and other similar economies in the south. Originality/value – The study outlines a step-by-step process of entrepreneurship development project implementation.

Objectives Aesthetic services can pose a potential risk of infection to clients if instruments are not discarded or reprocessed after each use. Public health inspectors (PHIs) inspect personal service settings (PSS) to monitor compliance with infection prevention and control (IPAC) requirements. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of various IPAC infractions in Ontario PSS that were identified during routine compliance inspections and whether these were similar to those identified during investigations in these settings in which an IPAC lapse was deemed to exist. Methods PSS inspection results were analyzed from three public health units (PHUs) in Ontario in 2018. Premises were grouped into three premises types (hairdressing/barbering, aesthetics, and body modification) and infractions from 16 IPAC compliance categories were compared. Results of IPAC lapse investigations for all of Ontario were also compared across premises types. Results There were 5,386 inspections conducted in 4,483 PSS by three PHUs in 2018. PSS offering aesthetics were most likely to have infractions identified. Common infractions were related to inappropriate reuse of single-use and reusable instruments. Of the 121 IPAC lapses reported by PHUs in 2018, 52 (43.0%) were in PSS, and 73.1% of these were associated with nail salons/spas. Conclusions Operators could benefit from increased awareness of infection control best practices and the potential for infections to occur if these are not followed. PHIs could consider an alternate frequency of PSS inspection to increase operator education and compliance with minimum IPAC requirements.

Teaching and learning science are major challenges that require media as facilitators for their understanding and view of the world, within this framework, it is the chemistry. The present study aimed to verify as the use of didactic resources for the performance in science teaching using a dynamic relationship of content. The methodology consisted of a field research, the qualitative divided into four stages, being employed lectures to explore the theme linking the practice and theory, using educational tools (experimentation, electronic game alternate) as sources for data analysis. Before the application, it was observed that after the trial the majority of students felt difficulty in combining theory with practice, on the basis of this difficulty it was noted that 50% consider experimenting a way supportive for the understanding of the subject, as well as provide discussions and dialogs (25%), and demonstrate chemical reactions (25%). The application of the game alternative teaching allowed students with a sense of knowledge in chemical life by promoting the development of a critical vision of the world. It was concluded that, for a student-teacher relationship-discipline is necessary to perform various steps, since the prior knowledge, the arguments, the inquiries, analysis of responses, to then carry out the explanation of the subject together with the use of didactic resources.

The purpose of this research is to provide clarification regarding productive ways to study PAI course content by investigating different teaching styles. This study will employ a qualitative research technique. Research methodologies utilized in this study included investigating current events in their natural environments, especially in cases where the boundaries between the events and their surroundings were blurry. Data reduction, data display, and withdrawal are three essential steps in the data analysis process. To sum up. With the hope that PAI educators would be better equipped to create their own curricular materials in the future, this session will concentrate on the steps involved in making a lesson plan. The use of educator-created resources can boost educators' self-assurance when leading learning activities. As a result, they are more equipped to teach their students the skills and information necessary to develop science and technology in the classroom. The success of the pupils' learning is dependent on how well the learning activities have been going. Analysis, design, development, assessment, and revision are the five main stages in the process of making educational materials.

This paper aims to investigate whether the university students who are taught reading through Reciprocal Teaching Method achieve better in reading ability than those who are taught through Direct Reading Thinking Activities. The design of this study is a quasi-experimental, non-randomized control group, pretest-posttest since it is conducted in a classroom setting that the subjects have been organized into classes. The subject of the study was the fourth term of university students of English education study program consisting 30 university students. The instrument of this research was a test as Pre-test and Post-test in the form of reading comprehension questions. The data analysis used Independent T-Test. Based on the result of the calculation of post-test from experimental and control groups, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. The result of the study shows that the use of the Reciprocal Teaching Method can improve the university students’ reading ability. It proves the hypothesis of the study that students who are taught reading through the Reciprocal Teaching method achieve better in reading ability than those who are taught through Direct Reading Thinking Activities. Based on this result, it can be concluded that the Reciprocal Teaching Method can be used as an alternative method to teach reading, so that the students are able to understand the texts comprehensively. It also makes the university students more active in the teaching learning process and can improve their ability as well.

The lesson study model of professional development that originated in Japan is becoming increasingly popular in the United States (Lesson Study Research Group 2009; Stigler and Hiebert 1999). At its core, lesson study is a means of bringing teachers together to carry out the process of planning a lesson, implementing and observing it, and then examining it during a debriefing session (Yoshida 2008). The debriefing component is one of the most distinctive characteristics of this type of professional development. It provides a means–discussion–for reflecting on the strengths and weaknesses of the collaboratively planned lesson. As such, the debriefing component merits special attention from those currently engaged in lesson study as well as those considering using it.
