The study investigated the impact of mandatory work from home due COVID-19 on personal and professional lives of people with different demographics. Statistical analysis of an online survey data (N=237) reveals that the impact on personal life dimensions—healthy lifestyle, family bonding, and physical stress—does not differ across people within different demographics. However, impact on emotional well-being is sensitive to gender and industry groups. Family size is also an important demographic factor impacted upon personal life dimensions. Professional dimensions related to work productivity and adopting new ways of working does not differ across demographics except for occupational role. Dimensions related to new skill development and change in professional attitude does differ across occupational roles. The study concludes by stating future research directions for mandatory work from home situation, and prescription to post-COVID-19 strategies for organizations.

Work- family balance” is a term that refers to an individual’s perceptions of the degree to which s/he is experiencing positive relationships between work and family roles, where the relationships are viewed as compatible and at equilibrium with each other. Like a fulcrum measuring the daily shifting weights of time and energy allocation between work and family life, the term, “workfamily balance,” provides a metaphor to countervail the historical notion that work and family relationships can often be competing, at odds, and conflicting. There was a time when the boundaries between work and home were fairly clear. Today, however, work is likely to invade our personal life — and maintaining work-life balance is no simple task. Family work balance is a complex issue that involves financial values, gender roles, career path, time management and many other factors. Every person and couple will have their own preferences and needs. The problem of maintaining a balance between work life and family life is not a new one. But in the recent few years social scientists have started paying more attention to it. Now there is growing concern in Nepal and experts are of the view that a constant struggle to balance both sets of life will have serious implications on the health of an employee. The seriousness of this problem increases many times in the cases of women workers in our society which is a traditional one and where women are still supposed to have greater family responsibilities. They are expected to look after their children, entertaining the guest, taking care of their parents, in laws and other elderly members of their families as also managing kitchen and other household affairs. Neglecting any of these responsibilities for the sake of discharging work in office or in other institutions where they are employed is not tolerated by their husbands and other male members of the society. We talk of women empowerment but we fail to understand the problems which working women are facing in the tradition bound society like of ours. The study is a pioneering work to investigate into this problem. It is a modest attempt to understand the manner in which women workers try to maintain balance between their work and family lives. The study also explores the ways and means by which female workers can be enabled to maintain proper balance between the two sets of their lives. The findings of this study may be of great use to employers, and business executives as well, who have now come to realize that the responsibility to maintain a healthy work life balance rests on both the organisation and employee. Purpose This paper aims to explore and compare academics’ experiences of managing work-life balance (WLB) in the British and Chinese contexts. The authors have three specific purposes. Firstly, to investigate whether there are marked gender differences in either context, given female and male academics’ work is considered fully comparable. Secondly, to examine contextual factors contributing to gender differences that influence and shape decisions in WLB and career paths. Thirdly, to explore the gendered consequences and implications. Design/methodology/approach A cross-national and multilevel analytical approach to WLB was chosen to unpick and explore gender land contextual differences and their influence on individual academics’ coping strategies. To reflect the exploratory nature of uncovering individual experience and perceptions, the authors used in-depth, semi-structured interviews. In total, 37 academics participated in the study, comprised of 18 participants from 6 universities in the UK and 19 participants from 6 universities in China. Findings This study reveals gendered differences in both the British and Chinese contexts in three main aspects, namely, sourcing support; managing emotions; and making choices, but more distinct differences in the latter context. Most significantly, it highlights that individual academics’ capacity in cultivating and using coping strategies was shaped simultaneously by multi-layered factors at the country level, the HE institutional level and the individual academics’ level. Originality/value Very few cross-cultural WLB studies explore gender differences. This cross-national comparative study is of particular value in making the “invisible visible” in terms of the gendered nature of choices and decisions within the context of WLB. The study has significant implications for female academics exercising individual scope in carving out a career, and for academic managers and institutions, in terms of support, structure and policy.

This paper is based on my keynote address at the British Psychological Society’s Psychotherapy Section Annual Training Conference - Physician Heal Thyself: Psychotherapeutic Approaches to Enabling Resilience in Helping Professions.. It aims to address the major challenge that we face in modern society especially in the UK, where under the current tough economic conditions people who work are experiencing a huge increase in their workload demanded by their employer. Within this context, the paper explores the myth of work/life balance; examines the challenges of balancing the paid work demand and other parts of life, their impact upon people’s health, family and social relationships; and then re-examines the concept of work/life balance from different cultural perspectives. It is hoped that the insight that we gain from such an exploration may inform us about the possible action that we can take and develop new solutions to achieve a sense of balance, improve our health, family and social relationships.

Veterinary medicine is a wonderful and rewarding profession. It can also be a challenging, demanding and stressful career. Practitioners need to be able to balance family, work, hobbies and other responsibilities without becoming overwhelmed. There are a plethora of podcasts, blogs, articles and books on well-being and work-life balance. Unfortunately, there is not an easy solution to balance life; what works for one person might not work for another. In this lecture, completing the stress cycle will be discussed, a method to measure overall well-being will be introduced, and the need to set priorities and tips and suggestions for work-life balance will be explored.

Learning outcomes This case study is best suited for courses in career management, stress management, work–life management or science of well-being in organization behavior (OB) or human resources management (HRM). This case study is targeted at the MBA or executive development programs. The learning outcomes of this case study are as follows: to analyze the challenges in balancing Suraj Kumar’s (the protagonist) work–life balance situation and identifying the main causes of such a conflict. What are some strategies that could be used to address these issues? To develop a plan to balance work responsibilities with family and personal life. What specific actions could he take to achieve this balance? To design a training program for employees that addresses work–life balance issues. What topics would you cover in the training, and what methods would you use to deliver the content? To create a proposal for a flexible work arrangement program that an organization could offer to its employees. What would be the benefits of this program, and how would it be implemented and managed? To develop a business case for why an organization should prioritize work–life balance for its employees. What are the potential benefits of doing so, and how can the organization measure the impact of its efforts? Case overview/synopsis This case study discusses conflicts due to competitive priorities that people face in balancing the pressures, roles and responsibilities between their professional life (careers) and their personal life, and the trade-offs that they make across these multiple aspects of their lives. This case study revolves around Suraj Kumar, a successful consultant, who was offered a promotion as the executive director for the social sector. This promotion would require extensive travel and time away from his family. Kumar was struggling to balance his work responsibilities with his family life and his involvement with the Smile and Shine Foundation, which supports the education of children from economically weaker sections of society. He was reflecting on his past and present and trying to figure out how to prioritize his commitments while also achieving his personal and professional goals. Complexity academic level This research has shown that a case discussion and role-play can be effective for a less experienced audience. Instructors can provide multiple perspectives to stimulate reflection and debate. For executive MBA or executive development programs, a self-reflection exercise is recommended. Participants in these programs may have personal experience dealing with or may know others who have dealt with work–life balance issues, making self-reflection a valuable tool. Abstract The idea of reconciling work with personal life was in its heyday at the turn of the 20th century when people realised that it was impossible to completely separate these inextricably linked spheres of human existence. Neglecting either of them, and not only in the scientific discourse but also in everyday life, is in many aspects detrimental to close relationships and to the performance at work. Nevertheless, a perfect combination of these two dimensions of human activity seems almost unattainable, as a growing number of contemporary studies show. Becoming involved in one entails some negligence in the other. The family context represents a relevant example of the attempts to reach the work-life balance. It is increasingly frequent that the contemporary young adults’ generation prioritise work, individual career, and personal development in their hierarchy of values. They delay their decisions on starting a family, having children, or simply settling down until they have achieved an adequate status and prosperity. Seeking to satisfy the need for close bonds, many young adults engage in only temporary relationships (cohabitation, swingers), but also create substitutes thereof. This generation succumbs to a growing sense of loneliness, despite the fulfilling careers or satisfying material and social statuses.

Work-life imbalance might lead to detrimental outcomes, including family dissatisfaction, poor performance in the workplace, and poor mental and physical health. This population-based study aims to explore the situation and trends in regard to work-life balance among working men and women in 2017, with a special focus on the stress experienced in work and personal lives. Descriptive analysis and multiphase regression are used to explore the associations of work-life imbalance with individual and family factors. Males’ satisfaction with the amount of time spent at work was most significantly related to the level of work-life stress. Both males’ and females’ satisfaction with work life, family life, and the amount of time spent at work and with family were all negatively related to the level of work-life stress. Participants who were not in marital or cohabiting status reported significantly higher levels of work-life stress. Participants who had childcare support reported higher levels of work-life stress than those who looked after their children by themselves or their partners. A similar pattern was found among participants involved in elderly care. This study provides insight into family policy that could promote balance in professional and personal life and relationships.

Balancing family and professional roles has become one of the challenges of the twenty-first century. This exploratory study aims to analyse the guilt, losses, aspirations and difficulties associated with work-family interaction and the career centrality of men and women, as well as their strategies to cope with work-family conflict. Using questionnaire and interview data of 73 Portuguese participants (41 men and 32 women), we showed that the women experienced the most guilt and loss and greater difficulties in balancing family and professional life. Yet contrary to the literature, the women in this sample assigned great importance to their career (even higher than men), but they felt that their potential for success at work was constrained due to the family demands. Prioritizing family over work gives work-centered women a sense of sacrifice, loss and guilt.

The objective of this study is to identify the perceptions of Generation Y employees regarding work-life balance practices. As increasing numbers of Generation Y enter the workforce, questions regarding how they perceive work, family and self-related issues, challenges and coping strategies in balancing personal and professional commitments became issues of interests for employers. This study uses interviews to collect data from six informants in Generation Y and the data were analyzed through content analysis. The results indicate that Generation Y employees do indeed have issues and challenges with balancing work and family. However, unlike the older generation of employees, Generation Y employees perceive managing work-life balance only through segmentation or separation strategies. This particular finding indicates that if organizations want to attract and retain these employees they should adapt a strategy specifically designed to target this employee group. Work-life balance research suffers from a lack of consistency in defining the scope of non-work (life outside work). Considering the evolving life preferences of modern workforce, work-life balance researchers should have a broader view of life which expands beyond work-family, and includes other non-work domains of life. This study is an attempt to establish that for today’s employees, work-life balance means balancing work not only with family life; but also with other non-work domains. Several non-work domains were identified from previous literature and a survey was conducted to identify the different non-work aspects important for respondents to have work-life balance. Based on results from 214 Indians working in various Indian cities and abroad, it was established that in the context of work-life balance, non-work includes not just family, but a combination of life domains, which varies from person-to-person. Although family remained the topmost priority, other non-work aspects were also chosen by varying proportions of respondents. Non-work preferences and related experiences of employees varied based on gender, marital status and child-care responsibilities. Satisfaction with organization’s work-life balance facilities differed when employees chose family, from when they chose other non-work domains. Findings indicate that various non-work preferences of employees should be considered during work-life balance research, and while designing work-life balance practices. This would help to address the non-work demands of different types of employees, and hence give more acceptance to such initiatives.

Sistem pendukung lingkungan yang ramah anak dan layak anak diharapkan mampu mewujudkan balancing work and family life.

The rising educational attainment for women and economic uncertainty gave rise to high maternal employment rates and the global labour force participation of women. Often working mothers, are put into the complexities of work and family life, resulting in stress and perplexity of values and priority. The phenomenological paper intends to explore the day-to-day life experiences and the balance of work-home life of school administrators involved in solo-parenting in the Diocesan Schools of Negros Occidental, Philippines. The data were collected using an in-depth interview from four school administrators chosen through purposive sampling. Thematic analysis following Lichtman's three Cs: coding, categorizing, and conceptualizing was used to analyse the data. The findings show that playing the role of an administrator and being a solo parent at the same time is both a challenging and rewarding task. School administrators employed various coping mechanisms such as seeking external help and involving in productive activities to manage daily stressors. In the absence of their spouse, time management is essential, and spending quality time with children is always a priority. The findings may provide baseline data for designing and implementing stress management programs to ensure the balance of work-family roles.

Work-family or work-life conflict occurs when the demands of work and family roles conflict, causing imbalances and difficulties. Heavy responsibilities, a lack of workplace flexibility, gender role expectations, and insufficient social support are precursors. Consequences include psychological distress, disrupted relationships, decreased satisfaction, career setbacks, and adverse organizational results. These factors must be addressed in order to promote well-being and achieve a healthy work-life balance. This study provides insight into work-life conflict literature by outlining its causes and consequences. To succeed in today’s diverse and competitive environment, employees must maintain the right balance between their work and life roles. The construct of WLC has gained the focus of researchers and practitioners as it yields many adverse organizational outcomes. Therefore, researchers have put great emphasis on understanding mechanisms of work-life conflict to develop work and life balance. The primary objective of this study is to identify the antecedents and consequences of WLC based on an extensive literature review. The study concludes with significant implications for practitioners and managers.

AbstractParenting a child with cancer creates numerous additional care demands that may lead to increased difficulties in balancing work and family responsibilities. Still, there is limited knowledge of how parents cope with both parenthood and paid work after a child’s cancer diagnosis. The aim of the study was to explore mothers’ and fathers’ experiences of balancing the dual roles of work and parenthood following a child’s cancer diagnosis. Nine focus groups with in total 32 parents of children with cancer in Sweden were conducted. The data was analysed using qualitative content analysis. Three categories were identified: Shifts in the importance of the parent role and the work role, Influence of context and conditions on the balance of roles, and Long-term unbalance of roles. Parents expressed an increased appreciation of time spent with family, but also emphasized the importance of work to counterbalance the sometimes overwhelming parenting demands. The pre-existing financial situation, work situation, and employer behaviour were important factors influencing the parents’ ability to balance work and family. Traditional gender roles influenced how couples divided responsibilities and reflected on their experiences. Mothers and fathers were also met with different expectations, which highlights the need for the healthcare to consider their communication with caregivers. Importantly, the parents expressed how the child’s illness affected their ability to balance work and family for a long time, while the understanding and support from others had steadily declined. Enabling parents to care for their ill child without sacrificing their own career is of utmost importance, and future research should focus on identifying which factors facilitate for parents to achieve a sustainable work-life balance.

Several research works have examined the difficulty of balancing job and family obligations. They've used various methods, looked at different timeframes, and explored different fields. Numerous research have established a correlation between work-family conflict and variables such as stress levels, job satisfaction, performance at work, and family life satisfaction. However, none of these studies have explicitly examined the conflict that results when work and family responsibilities collide, particularly in the field of education. This indicates a gap in our knowledge of this field. To better understand how female employees in the education sector perform on the job and are satisfied with their jobs, this study will look at the effects, contributing variables, causes, coping methods, and correlations between these characteristics. The purpose of the proposed study is to fill this gap by examining the connection between family-work and work-family conflict. It will examine the causes of these conflicts, as well as their effects on women's performance in the education sector. The study intends to shed light on a significant but often ignored facet of balancing work and family obligations by concentrating on these areas. Abstract Whereas previous studies have investigated life regrets, little attention has been paid to the important accomplishments older adults include in their autobiographic life narratives. Phenomenon such as the memory positivity effect suggest that accomplishments should be observed. We used a Health and Retirement Study 2017 Life History Mail Survey (N = 2,165) to examine the characteristics of participants over age 65 who reported accomplishments (max = 3), what was reported, and whether early-life decisions about balancing family and work are associated with the reports. Women, whites, and people with at least high school education and normal cognitive status were more likely to report accomplishments (67%). We categorized reports as family-related (39%), personal (19%), combined family/personal (25%) or other (16%). Multinominal logistic regression models revealed that participants who themselves favored family over work in early life or whose spouse decided for family, were more likely to report family-related accomplishments.

Aim. The presented study aims to determine the key employment parameters that allow bachelor’s and master’s degree students to combine work with professional education in the optimal way and help people enrolled on further professional education to maintain a balance between work and family functions.Tasks. The authors analyze surveys of bachelor’s and master’s degree undergraduates and graduates of continuing professional education (CPE) programs of the Faculty of Economics of Lomonosov Moscow State University (MSU).Methods. This study uses general logical methods: dialectical, logical, comparative, and systems analysis; methods of sociological research, including public surveys.Results. The authors identify major employment characteristics that help working students maintain high academic performance and positively affect the work-family balance of older people receiving further professional education.Conclusions. Increased flexibility of the labor market in the form of more part-time job offers could make a significant contribution to maintaining and improving the quality of training of students who combine work and studies, which is especially relevant for bachelor’s degree students. Diversifying the available forms of employment can positively affect the decision to gain intitial professional experience while studying at the university. Due to the development of remote employment, the forms of occupation available to students need to be further studied in detail.

Purpose – This study explores how Australian Muslim men cope with potential conflict and achieve feelings of balance between their work, family and religious roles. Design/methodology/approach – The study is guided by the interpretive paradigm and is qualitative. Data is collected from participants via semi-structured in-depth interviews (n=20) and analysed using thematic analysis. Findings – Personal coping strategies (e.g. making permanent changes and time management) seem more effective in coping with immediate conflict and achieving work-life balance as opposed to external ones (e.g. supervisor support). Although some of the strategies mirror existing research, their extent of use and reasons for usage by Muslim men are different. Muslim men use these strategies in a preventive manner to actively achieve work-life balance rather than just cope with episodic work-life conflict. Research limitations/implications – The study is conducted with a small sample and the findings may not be generalizable to non-practising Australian Muslim men. To date, research has not clearly articulated how people who do not experience work-life conflict, make decisions to achieve balance. This study has a positive look at a negative issue by indicating that workers can go beyond coping with conflict and explore avenues to achieve work-life balance. The findings underscore the importance of preventive coping in achieving work-life balance and caution researchers about investigating how people cope with immediate work-life conflict only. Originality/value – In addition to work and family roles, this study focuses on religious commitments, with religion being a largely overlooked concept within the work-family coping literature.

This research aids in exploring the adaptive strategies employed by dual-income earner couples to balance their work and family commitments. Via the comprehensive review of the literature, key themes and patterns in the strategies utilized by couples to achieve work-family balance are identified. These themes include time management strategies, communication and collaboration, flexible work arrangements, and self-care practices. The findings provide insights into the approaches couples employ to navigate the challenges and demands of dual careers and family responsibilities. The implications of the findings are discussed for individuals, organizations, and policymakers. Time management strategies emphasize the effective allocation and prioritization of time for work and family domains. Communication and collaboration underscore the importance of open and honest dialogue between partners. Flexible work arrangements are recognized as a vital adaptive strategy, necessitating options that accommodate the diverse needs of dual-income earner couples. Self-care practices are highlighted as essential for reducing stress and maintaining work-family balance. Organizations and policymakers can promote these strategies to support work-life integration.

In 2003, eligible employees in the United Kingdom acquired the legal right to request flexible working arrangements. The government believes that this new right will provide parents with greater choice and support in balancing work and childcare, whilst being compatible with business efficiency. This article critically appraises this new right and examines how it is applied in relation to other UK legislation on discrimination and unfair dismissal. An overview of international studies on corporate efforts to introduce family-friendly arrangements, and an overview of governmental efforts to address the reconciliation of work and family-life is provided in this article, with a view to arguing that there is a need, in South Africa, for state policy regarding work-life balance and for further research into corporate efforts to introduce family-friendly work arrangements.

Data were collected from 243 married international graduate students (MIGSs) studying in the United States. Results of structural equation modeling indicated that personality traits influence the psychosocial adjustment process. In addition, being extraverted, agreeable, and conscientious contributed to balancing academic and family life, whereas having neurotic tendencies such as experiencing depression and anxiety diminished work-family balance. Work-family balance did not mediate the relationship between personality traits, gender roles, social support, and psychosocial adjustment. Set in a university in Northwest England, this smallscale, qualitative approach, influenced by social constructionism and feminism, incorporated semi-structured interviews (10) and a focus group. It explores experiences of work-life balance (WLB) and wellbeing as HE study was added to daily life and merged into the home sphere. The findings reveal the benefits of home-based study and work-based learning for mature learners with varied responsibilities. The women developed academically and practically, and transformed as they experienced university life to gain an increased sense of belonging, which normalised university attendance in households, a change here referred to as the 'l earning family'.

Work–family balance in sport has until this point largely been characterized as an issue for women. Current societal trends, however, suggest that men also struggle with balancing work and family responsibilities. Using theoretical frameworks from both conflict and enrichment, this study examined the ways that fathers who are coaches experience and manage the work–life interface. Twenty-four men who are fathers and high school varsity head coaches were interviewed for this study. The respondents discussed the day-to-day challenges and coping strategies they utilized to manage their work–life interface. Ultimately, five themes emerged from the data, including (a) coaching as more than an occupation, (b) experiences of conflict and strain, (c) coping strategies, (d) nonutilization of organizational supports, and (e) experiences of enrichment. These findings suggest that, indeed, men struggle with balancing competing role demands. However, the findings also suggest that men are utilizing diverse and creative approaches for managing their fathering and coaching roles, resulting in meaningful experiences of enrichment stemming from both coaching and fathering.

Work-Life Balance does not mean an equal balance. Trying to schedule an equal number of hours for each of your various work and personal activities is usually unrewarding and unrealistic. Purpose: Work Life Balance (WLB) is one of the important issues in corporate sector. However, there is a need to know the balancing level of teachers with regard to both their work and family or personal life. Thus, the purpose of this study is to map the dimensions of WLB among teachers. Design/methodology/approach: This study is based on the responses of teachers of private degree colleges surrounding Shivamogga City. The data for the study was collected from 108 teachers working private colleges and professional courses. Findings: The findings of the study indicate that there is a need for designing WLB policies and programs for the teaching community to enable them to balance their work and life needs. Managerial implications: This study may give insight regarding the problem that teachers usually face. Balance should be established between workload distribution, time and extra-curricular activities so as to inculcate efficiency among teachers. Research Limitations: The study is based on a limited sample size. There is a need to carry out studies with a larger sample size to make results more generalizable.

This paper discusses the desires and realities of women and family-friendly policies in the Korean government. The implementation of policies for gender equality during the past two decades has increased the ratio of women in the civil service. As the number of women in the government has increased, family-friendly policies have been provided for civil servants to balance work and personal life. Family-friendly policies are expected to positively affect the civil servants and government performance. However, the family-friendly policies are not effectively implemented because they are not properly bundled, and civil servants are reluctant to take advantage of these policies under male-centered organizational practices. To aid civil servants in balancing the role requirements of work and family, government organizations should create family-friendly work environments by not only instituting various proper family-friendly programs but also by promoting a supportive culture. Several efforts for establishing such a supportive culture are suggested. Points for practitioners To aid civil servants in balancing the role requirements of work and family, government organizations should create family-friendly work environments by instituting various family-friendly programs and by promoting supportive work—family culture. Only providing family-friendly programs without promoting cultural change is insufficient. Several efforts are essential to establish a supportive work—family culture. First of all, the organizational leaders should be aware of the positive effects of family-friendly programs on employees' attitude and behavior and organizational performance. They need to make civil servants believe that their careers will not be negatively affected by using family-friendly benefits through providing them with counseling and education on family-friendly programs and work—life balance. They should also make every effort to reduce the male-centered organizational practices and to support the work—family concerns of the civil servants.

Life satisfaction has been shown to be a major factor influencing productivity across different categories of employees including health workers. Nurses encounter challenges of balancing their work and family life. They are also mindful of achieving satisfaction in various aspects of life. Understanding the relationship between work-family conflict and life satisfaction is crucial for creating a supportive and friendly work environment, which would enable the nurse lead a satisfied life. This study hence aimed at ascertaining the relationship between work-family conflict and life satisfaction among nurses. It is a cross-sectional survey conducted in Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH) and Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital (COOUTH) in Anambra State, Nigeria. A sample of 420 nurses was used for the study. The instruments for data collection included work-family conflict questionnaire and the satisfaction with life scale. The collected data was analysed using frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation and Spearman correlation using the SPSS 25. Results showed that majority had life satisfaction (79.5%). There also was a positive relationship between life satisfaction and work-family conflict (p < .001). This study recommends that recruiting more nurses and implementing a flexible work arrangement in health facilities such as study leave, sufficient maternity leave, etc., which would help nurses cope while pursuing the various highpoints leading to higher life satisfaction.

This study employs a theoretical and comprehensive framework for investigating the relationship between passion for work, work–family conflict, and emotional exhaustion. Drawing from the dualistic model of passion, we posited that passion could provoke negative feelings, leading to strict determination and inhibiting the attainment of an effective, balanced life. However, there is little empirical evidence to support the dualistic model of passion’s notion that passion either can assist employees in balancing their various life responsibilities or impede such a balance. The purposes of this study are threefold: first, to investigate the impact of passion for work on work–family conflict; second, to examine the relationship between work–family conflict and emotional exhaustion; and third, to clarify the mediating process of work–family conflict in the relationship between passion for work and emotional exhaustion. A cross-sectional survey was employed to gather data from Indonesian firefighters (n = 398). PLS-SEM was utilized to test the proposed hypotheses. Our results revealed that obsessive passion negatively affects emotional exhaustion. The underlying reason for this result is due to self-conceptions based on community expectations, receiving help from others to solve problems, and improving well-being even when problems arise. Our results suggest that organizations encourage employees’ harmonious development, providing employees with skills necessary to deal with challenging situations and providing a family-supportive policy.

Objective: Research studies have demonstrated that nurses face difficulty balancing family roles and responsibilities with work. This study aimed to explore the relationship between work-family conflict and health status and job satisfaction among nurses. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study of 426 nurses working in high-dependency and general settings in a large referral hospital in Brunei Darussalam. Results: Work-family conflict inversely affects health status and job satisfaction for nurses working in high-dependency and general settings. However, general nurses experienced higher work-family conflict albeit better job satisfaction and health status compared to high-dependency nurses. Older, single and non-smoker nurses reported higher job satisfaction. Conclusion: This study further informs healthcare and nursing administrators and policymakers, who should foster effective strategies and interventions to support the balance of nurses' work and family life.

Abstract Despite substantial discussions on caregivers in policy making and academic research, a rapidly emerging new group of middle-aged male family caregivers who often also work are largely understudied. Inadequate understanding of male family caregivers jeopardises not only themselves but also care recipients, other family members and society: better care for older people depends on caregivers’ well-being. I address this gap by understanding how and why gender affects male family carers’ choices of care practices, and how male caregivers as ‘gendered beings’ sustain their well-being while reconciling work and care for their parents. Through in-depth-qualitative narrative interviews based on social anthropology of everyday life with 23 male working family carers in Tokyo in 2019, I find that men select care practices with priority given to familiar tasks deemed appropriately masculine. To perform ‘appropriate’ care for their parents, such men tend to approach care as they do their ‘work’: they ‘work-nise’ care. Such a gendered approach to care practices has important implications for addressing gender in public interventions. Also, I find that for male family working carers, achieving well-being does not mean balance in work, care and family. Rather, for them a source of well-being is from fulfilling filial duty as sons, which, however, requires making an appropriate effort and devoting themselves to some extent to support their parent(s). Thus, such men need to be embedded in a care and employment system that enables them to achieve such well being that, in turn, significantly impacts their care provision.

This article examines the impact of the neoliberal restructuring of health services on female nurses in Turkey. It provides a qualitative analysis of work–family conflict, establishing that not only work but also family life has become more precarious. The contours of precariousness of both work and family are analysed through interviews with 50 female nurses working full time in different areas of health service provision. The findings suggest that the neoliberal restructuring of health services has led to staffing deficits along with workload intensification, unpredictable work schedules and poor organisational support. This has increased work–family conflict, defined as a form of precariousness because it heightens the difficulties, risks and insecurities entailed in balancing family-related expectations with increasing work demands for female nurses. This precariousness makes spousal support critical if nurses are to be able to address work–family conflict and leads to nurses’ compliance with unfavourable working conditions as a way to resolve the mutual interference of family and work. The increased subordination of life to work has resulted from the neoliberal managerialisation of health services, creating precarisation in the lives of female nurses. JEL Codes: D1, J2, J7, J81

Parents of youth with chronic health conditions encounter numerous challenges in supporting their children across pediatric treatment contexts. Structural barriers to care, such as access issues and coordinating care across school, health, and family settings, can exacerbate challenges to daily functioning. Parents are often concomitantly managing their child’s chronic condition, their own health care needs, work and family demands. For these parents, accomplishing a manageable “work-life balance” feels elusive, if not impossible, when a chronic health condition is part of family life. Based on a recent symposium presentation, combined perspectives from the disciplines of pediatric psychology, parenting, and human development and family studies consider key challenges and opportunities to assist parent coping with stress associated with caregiving amidst pervasive changes in healthcare service delivery. Two innovative interventions to support parents in both an outpatient (“Parents as Coping Coaches”) and an inpatient (“Putting Parents FIRST”) context are described, with commonalities and unique aspects highlighted for each. These programs are considered in reference to a rapidly changing healthcare landscape, growing focus on the family as a core context for care, and importance of parent/caregiver self-care and crucial role in supporting children’s long-term health and resiliency.

Nursing is a female-dominated profession and is commonly considered as a stressful and challenging job. The nature of the nurses’ work, which is highly demanding, brings about difficulties in balancing work and family life, further resulting in work-family conflict. Apart from workplace stressors, work-family conflict has been identified as one of the factors that can threaten nurses' psychological health. This literature review thus sought to identify the factors associated with nurses’ experience of work-family conflict and its consequences to their psychological health. Accordingly, this literature review found that nurses’ work characteristics, namely, shift work, job demand and individual factors, significantly influence work-family conflict, which may in turn affect their psychological health in several ways. Future research should focus on positive conditions or resource-based perspectives that can help nurses in reducing work-family conflict and enhancing their health and well-being.

Even though the confrontation of women with the necessity to seek a balance between career and family in academia has become a subject of various research studies, a structural solution for this phenomenon still does not exist. The goal of this paper is to compare the narratives of Hungarian ethnic minority and Serbian majority female university staff members working at the Universities of Novi Sad and Belgrade, with respect to the difficulties they face when balancing family life and academic career. The qualitative research was based on twenty semi-structured interviews, conducted in 2014 and 2015. The findings show that women when balancing between their careers and families used certain strategies to explain their views and decisions. The challenge of finding work-life balance is great for women, who decide to deal with it on a micro level, in their own family and in their own way, to keep up with their commitments. Although these are women with the same socio-economic status, the intersectional analysis showed that there is a difference between the strategies used by respondents of different nationalities when balancing their career and family, and that their different social origin, family and life circumstances lead to establishing differences between these professional categories of women. The abovementioned differences lead to new inequalities between women in academia.
