This article aims to cast a shadow over the history of mental health education and training in Iraq and a projection of Islamic scientific heritage in Baghdad during the seventh century. It also discloses the foundation of first teaching and training centers in psychiatry focusing on the marked contribution of the pioneer psychiatrists. Introduction. Up to our knowledge there is no elaborate published literature focusing on historical role of Iraq in mental health education and training and its current reality apart from scares data about mental health in Mediterranean region as a whole. In this article, we try calling the attention to the outstanding contribution of Iraq in mental health and medical education in general which appeared to be established during the golden era of Abbasid Caliphs in Baghdad during the seventh century. After several decades of scientific and cultural deterioration associated withOttomans colonization , Baghdad intellectuals started to build the first medical school in Iraq at the end of twentieth century , teaching mental illnesses as part of the curriculum took place and continue to progress through establishing the national training programs .

Jonathan Wright is a British journalist and literary translator, known for bringing many works of Arab fiction to new audiences via translation for the past fifteen years. His recent works, however, seem more connected to Iraq: in addition to The Iraqi Christ by Hassan Blasim and Frankenstein in Baghdad by Ahmed Saadawi, he has translated The Book of Collateral Damage by Sinan Antoon (Yale University Press, 2020) and God 99 by Blasim (Comma Press, 2020). Jonathan is currently working on a semi-biographical novella by Iraqi writer Ali Bader and on works by Palestinian activist and fiction writer Ghassan Kanafani yet to be translated or retranslated, into English. In this interview, Ruth Abou Rached and Jonathan Wright discuss the experiences of Wright translating Iraqi and Arabic fiction and Wright offers his thoughts and recommendations.

The study aspired to investigate the human trauma of a society in wartime and thereafter. It focuses on literature that seeks to reflect life as it should be. However, literary works here deal with catastrophic dramas that depict Iraqis who generally suffer from the negative repercussions of the American Crisis and the extreme underdevelopment and poverty at that time. In this paper, the audience faces the disaster in two dramatic works: Baghdadi Bath (2005) by Jawad al-Asadi and Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo (2012) by Rajiv Joseph. They are a good example that depicts the nightmare experienced by all Iraqis during the war. Speaking about the disaster of war, we guess that the disaster may have human roots. The disaster of war on Iraq, in particular, is taken for analysis. The researchers try to denote the nature of man at the time of the disaster. The paper explores the relations between the ideas of war and the world we face and refers to Baghdad’s brutal past and its confused present. It also inspects the real reasons behind the war and records the human condition in the consequences of the American invasion of Iraq. To narrow the field of investigation, the researchers have chosen disaster at war, especially the American war on Iraq in 2003, and its results for the study. The paper steps down war and violence and assures peace for people depending on different perspectives.

This work intends to illustrate the methods of using the authentic literary text in the process of spreading Italian, especially in Baghdad where there is a strong propensity to learn the Italian language. The concept of the language that arises from literature is an idea closely linked to the mentality of the Arab learner towards Italian culture: an idea also created by the first Arabisations of literary texts in the early years of the previous century. The research was carried out in Baghdad by two researchers, an Italianist from Baghdad and an Italian mother language linguist, with the aim of bringing together the two sectors in favor of the diffusion of the Italian language. The study also aims to clarify the models from Italian literature most welcomed by those who study Italian in Iraq. In addition to making clear the conceptual phases of what is meant by a literary text in the process of dissemination of a language, and how to expand the literary canon by referring to the corpus of the language of the different genres of Italian literature.

Background: The interest in clinical research is growing worldwide, and the involvement of medical students in academic and clinical research is increasing. Medical students in Iraq have started to focus on academic activities. However, this trend is in its infancy due to limited resources and the war burden. Their interest in the field of Neurosurgery has been evolving recently. This is the first paper that aims to assess the status of the academic productivity of Iraqi medical students within the neurosurgical field. Methods: We searched the PubMed Medline database and Google scholar between January 2020 and December 2022 with a different combination of keywords. Additional results were obtained by individually searching for all the medical universities in Iraq that participated in the neurosurgical literature. Results: Between January 2020 and December 2022, 60 neurosurgical publications included Iraqi medical students. 47 Iraqi medical students from 9 universities (the University of Baghdad 28 students, followed by 6 students from the University of Al-Nahrain, and others) were involved in these 60 neurosurgery publications. The topics of these publications are “vascular neurosurgery” (n = 36) followed by “neurotrauma” (n = 11). Conclusion: Academic productivity of Iraqi medical students in the field of Neurosurgery has surged in the last 3 years. In the past 3 years, 47 Iraqi medical students from nine different Iraqi universities contributed to sixty international neurosurgical publications. However, there are challenges that are required to be tackled to establish a research-friendly environment despite wars and restrained resources.

Water quality evaluation is fundamental for water resources management. Water quality index (WQI) is an accurate and easily understandable method for assessing water quality for different purposes. In this study, the Iraqi water quality index (Iraq WQI) was constructed to be used to evaluate the Iraqi rivers for drinking. For this purpose, some statistical techniques, experts’ advice, literature reviews, and authors’ experience were used. First, the principal component analysis (PCA) method and the modified Delphi method were used to select the most influential water quality parameters and their relative weights. Second, the quality curves of selected parameters were drawn to calculate the WQI scores basing on the water quality standards. Of twenty-seven parameters, six parameters were chosen to be within the index depending on their effect on water quality in order to reflect the specific characteristics of the Iraqi waters. The Iraq WQI was applied to the Tigris River within Baghdad as a case study and for some sites on other Iraqi rivers, and gave acceptable results. Results revealed that the statistical techniques used in this paper can be applied in all Iraqi rivers considering their specific characteristics. Based on the reliability of the Iraq WQI, there is no longer a need to use Indices designed for water for other countries.

War-time literature about Iraq reflects the terror and the trauma that the civilian population in Iraq have had to live with in recent years. As conflicts and wars overtook the country in a rapid fashion and the state’s hold weakened, the country plunged into total chaos. The infrastructure crumpled, the economy collapsed, and multiple rebel groups surfaced halting peace process in the country. The present paper examines the fictional text, The Sirens of Baghdad, to understand the civilian psychological trauma resulting from repeated wars on Iraqi soil. The gruesome deaths and uncertainty about country’s future have contributed to an overall feeling of dejection and apathy among the civilian population. This research paper concludes that the psychological trauma of the civilian population belies simple categorization like PTSD, and there is a need to determine the true scale of psychological damage suffered over years of exposure to terror.

The late 19th and early 20th century was a time of change for the Jewish people of Baghdad. Cultural influences from Europe and North America were making their presence felt and some Jewish Baghdadis actively sought to incorporate these into their personal and professional lives. To facilitate this process of acculturation, the Jewish community established schools that provided both a western education and a Jewish one. This essay studies these schools and considers the larger challenges that the community faced in seeking to be both western and Jewish while living in the Arab world. A brief history of the Jews of Baghdad and their standing in the city through the ages is also included.

Agha, Rand Hazim Mahmood. "The role of intelligent systems in traditional courtyard houses in Baghdad, Iraq". Thesis, University of Newcastle upon Tyne, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10443/4063.

Resumo:
Intelligent systems (IS) are seen as a vital component in improving building performance. The research reported in this thesis explored the potential role of such systems in improving the performance of courtyard house types in Baghdad, Iraq. The Iraqi government's intention to refurbish those courtyard houses that possess significant historical architectural value was based on modifying the ambient social and environmental condition to protect the occupants. The benefits of IS are generally to: provide environmental control and system control, reduce running costs, improve operational effectiveness and energy efficiency, maintenance/building upkeep, reliability/dependability, and last but not least monitoring and observation. However, the majority of IS research and development has been on commercial and office buildings, and although there were applications in dwelling houses, their potential benefit for certain house types, for example courtyard houses, has not been well understood. Against the background of the possible refurbishment of the courtyard house, the aim of this research is to explore the potential role of intelligent systems in improving the performance of the courtyard house type in Baghdad, Iraq. The main objectives of this research were to: (1) investigate the characteristics and features of the traditional courtyard house in Iraq, (2) investigate the meaning, nature and application of intelligent systems in buildings, (3) investigate the lifestyle of current users of traditional courtyard houses and how these buildings support their needs, (4) examine the potential role of IS in improving the performance of courtyard houses, and (5) make recommendations on the possible applications of IS to courtyard houses. Various research methods and strategies were adopted to achieve the defined aim of this research. These methods include an extensive literature review in both the areas of the courtyard house and intelligent buildings, and a case study was collected the data from two main sources through: (1) semi-structured interviews with twenty five architects and twenty four occupants, and (2) physical survey and observation of the traditional courtyard house type in the Al-Kadhimiya historic area. The qualitative method was used to analysis the data collection. Abstract The findings from the study identified the following new themes which provide the basis for exploring the research question: (1) Architectural value - key feature through the passive system of the traditional courtyard house type in the Al-Kadhimiya, (2) Limitation of space use, some spaces were not used, and the residents felt as if they were paralyzed at these times and (3) Requirement for new systems in this house type. It is concluded that the key features of the traditional courtyard house type are passive systems which support the lifestyle by achieving thermal comfort. Adding simple IS as applications which are integrated and wireless, with an actuator, will certainly help the residents enhance the house performance in Al-Kadhimiya. This will be done by: developing the level of control over the environment, reducing the environmental challenges, decreasing the social struggles, and supporting the response to the environment. This study contributes to the role of ISs in enhancing the performance of the traditional courtyard house. For the current users, these roles are achieved through three major steps: (1) the nature of IS in traditional courtyard house, (2) The priority of systems; (3) Using the courtyard house as a container for intelligent systems. Future users are likely to have a different lifestyle and so the level of intelligence may change; thus, the potential need for ISs might change too due to the type of IS and its operation. A clean air recirculation module is one application to be used in the traditional courtyard house type in Al-Kadhimiya, which can be selected to enhance house performance.

The ultimate test of the success of a housing development is the level of satisfaction that it engenders for its residents. It has been found, in much research carried out in the developed countries that the lack of detailed knowledge about users' needs and the failure to predict user behaviour were mainly unsatisfactory housing environments. Housing the external open spaces around dwellings were shown to be crucial satisfaction to blame for in multi-family and between the overall user. This study based In Iraq investigates users' satisfaction with the environment of recently constructed multi-family housing. It aims to identify the elements of the external environment associated with the residents' overall satisfaction in relation to these new environments. This study uses a range of factors which have been identified in many studies elsewhere in the world as having a bearing on users' satisfaction with their housing environment to examine people's reaction to their housing environment. It considers how such factors influence users' satisfaction in Iraq, and also identifies the Iraqi housing designers' intentions in relation to the external environment and examines their success in meeting user requirements. Various were used to systematic obtain information-gathering the information needed techniques for the evaluation. These included structured interviews of 183 households in three new housing projects, general observations as well as unstructured interviews with the designers and planners. The results of this study has shown to a large extent that the application of Western research in Iraq is valid. It is suggested that if Iraq used the knowledge available 1n the Western studies, it could avoid repeating the mistakes made in Western Europe and the U.S.A., during its transition from a rural to a more urban society. In particular this study has highlighted some essential social and cultural differences which indicate that Iraq must develop its own special approach to housing. It is hoped that this study may be used both to influence the drawing up of future housing policies in Iraq and the planning of new housing estates. In addition to providing the basis for rearranging the external environment of existing housing estates to meet more closely the needs of the residents.

A new interest in Sufism in Baghdad has emerged within the last two decades. This interest reflects the unease that modern Arab intellectuals feel with respect to the transformation of the city’s space to conform to the politics of the modern nation state and its ideological apparatus. This chapter will focus on three modern texts that look back at the intersection of Sufism and Baghdad’s urban landscape when the city was the recognized leader of the Islamic world. The first Azīz al-Sayyid Jāsim’s Mutaṣawwifat Baghdād (The Sufis of Baghdad) (1990), the second Hādī al-‘Alawī’s Madārāt Ṣūfiyya (Sufi Orbits) (1997), and the third ‘Umar al-Tall’s Mutaṣwwifat Baghdād fī al-Qarn al-Sādis al-Hijrī/al-Thānī ‘Ashar al-Mīlādī: Dirāsa Tārīkhiyya (The Sufis of Baghdad in the Sixth Century AH/ Twelfth Century: A Historical Study) introduced by the well-known Iraqi historian and distinguished authority on the Abbasid economy ‘Abd al-‘Azīz al-Dūrī . The chapter examines how in the hands of these intellectuals, Sufi itineraries serve as a kind of oblique criticism while simultaneously providing a topography of the city that resonates in the popular imaginary with both the piety and protest of its past Sufi masters.

The Traffic safety culture is related to the country’s cultural norms and values and produces different safety outcomes. In the present assessment, the driver’s population in Baghdad with different age groups and level of education has been investigated through a field survey. A questionnaire was designed for such assessment and data were obtained for the last twelve years. The total number of participated drivers in the assessment is 1052. The traffic education level and the general education level of the driver (traffic safety culture) have shown a significant influence on accident participation and are unsatisfactory among driver’s population in Baghdad. It was concluded that to control the level of road traffic accidents, and enhance safety, attention should be focused on traffic safety cultures of the drivers, traffic education strategies, and driving theoretical course rather than the physical condition and the experience in driving before issuing a driving license.

The bacterium Treponema pallidum subspecies pallidum causes syphilis, a sexually and blood-transmitted illness (STD). The signs and symptoms of syphilis vary according on the stage of the illness (primary, secondary, latent, and tertiary). The goal of this study is to use serological and immunological testing to evaluate the prevalence of syphilis among blood donors in Baghdad province. The current study was done on a total of 28287 blood donors at the main blood bank in Baghdad who were tested between April 2020 and March 2021. They ranged in age from 20 to 75 years and were screened throughout the study period between April 2020 and March 2021. Serum, plasma and whole blood samples were collected, tested for IgG,IgA and IgM by ELISA. The results of the epidemiological study revealed that 200 instances of syphilis were found among 28287 blood samples donated by volunteers, with no signs of the disease. There were 189 men (94.5%) and 11 women (5.5%), resulting in a male to female ratio of 17:1. According to the findings of the current study, the incidence of syphilis among blood donors in both sexes varied in proportion to the donors' socio-demographic parameters, with a higher frequency in men. the study shows the following percentages: Unemployed / jobless 139 (69. 5 percent), governments 35 (17.5%), merchants 12 (6%), farmers 11 (5.5%), and students 3 (1.5%). The majority were 85 (42.5 percent), with primary study accounting for 75 (37.5%), secondary study 31 (15.5%), tertiary 6 (3%), and university graduates 3 (1.5%). The findings indicated that married people had 154 (77%) more infections than unmarried people 46 (23%). The individuals' ABO profiles were 92 (46%) O, 64 (32%) A, 33 (16.5%) B, and 11 (5.5%) AB. Syphilis serology had been performed and showed positive treponemal IgG, IgA & IgM by ELISA, The showed that results all 200 samples of donor's blood were positive for TPHA test.

In 1957, Frank Lloyd Wright was commissioned to design the Opera House for Baghdad as part of his Master Plan for the capital of Iraq. The same year, he proposed a design statement- an “Oasis” for Arizona State Capital in Phoenix, Arizona. Although both buildings were never realized, they continue to inspire their respective city. This study compares the two buildings as a case study to disclose the differences and unique similarities of Wright’s modern design approach to eastern culture compared to the western context.

Resumo:
In a judgment of 15 February 2022, the Federal Supreme Court of Iraq decided to repeal the 2007 Oil and Gas Law of the Kurdistan Regional Government on constitutional grounds. The judgment can be regarded as politicized, and has enormous implications for the autonomy of the Kurdish Region and the federal discourse in Iraq. This commentary assesses the soundness of the Federal Supreme Court’s judgment through critically evaluating the arguments against the Iraqi Constitution. It comes to conclude that the judgment has been a misinterpretation of the constitutional provisions that prescribe shared powers between the central and regional governments over oil and gas. These issues are an indirect consequence of the ambiguity and non-implementation of many constitutional provisions. Relatedly, this commentary provides some recommendations for a future cooperation between Erbil and Baghdad.
