Poetry is an effective and reliable material in teaching English language. It offers astounding opportunities for reading, writing, speaking and listening practices for English learners. Teaching English through poetry has many advantages such as it being of authentic material, being a medium to express emotions and feelings, being a wonderful carrier of culture, and being able to help improve students’ linguistic knowledge and skills. Poetry is often regarded as the most sophisticated genre of literature, comprising a variety of contents that are narrative, lyrical and dramatic in nature. Some of the difficulties teachers face while teaching English through poetry are the students’ proficiency level, the teachers’ method of teaching and the chosen poetry texts. Thus, this paper proposes to explore the advantages of teaching English language through poetry and its challenges at Hajjah University in Yemen, from which suggestions for choosing poetries to teach English will be given with special reference to “Death, be not Proud” and “Lucy”, as well as other suggested teaching methods for students of the Bachelor of Education (English) program at Hajjah University in Yemen.

The study deals with the rendition of the figure of Ophelia in Czech modern poetry in comparison with the poetry of European Expressionism. The image of Ophelia’s aesthetic death from Shakespeare’s drama Hamlet has influenced and inspired a whole range of artworks. It strongly reverberated in German Expressionist poetry, especially that by Georg Heym, Gottfried Benn and Georg Trakl. The Czech poets who approached this topic in the spirit of Expressionism include Jan Skácel, Vladimír Holan and Jiří Orten. The study further addresses these works in the light of the Ophelia complex as defined by Bachelard.

O encaminhamento desse estudo se faz por meio de análises dos poemas, conceitos sobre imagem e símbolo e de um percurso sobre a história do imaginário no ocidente.********************************************************************From the signals to the poetic images: poetry reading and criticism of the imaginaryAbstract: This work focuses on a conception of poetic art which captures the natural elements as deeper signals of extract. By covering the images with a symbolic load, the poet promotes, according to Bachelard, a new experience with language and revives a new psychism, besides overlapping diverse worlds and crossing past and future experiences. The provocation to the development of this theme comes from the poems “Poetas e insetos”, “Falcões” and “As formas prisioneiras”, by Dora Ferreira da Silva (1918-2006). In this poet, the conversion from signals into symbols operated by the poetic text finds resonance in the theories of Jung and Durand, who comprehend the symbol – the result from culture and subjective pressures – as responsible for the dynamism of the artistic object, whose meaning is incessant. The development of this study is made through the analyses of the poems, concepts of images and symbol and an overview of the history of the imaginary in the West. Keywords: Image; symbol; Dora Ferreira da Silva; Bachelard; Jung

AbstractThis paper aims to present the connection and continuity between the implicit principles that configure the transgressive visions of Lucian Blaga, Gaston Bachelard and Ștefan Lupașcu, which inaugurate a paradigmatic change in consensus with the revolutionary ideas circulating in science, philosophy, poetry and art across the 20th century. The subtle paradigmatic axis which crosses implicitly or explicitly the work of Lucian Blaga proves to be the transgressive attempt of integration and overcoming of the antinomies under the sign of the included middle which underlies the transfiguring core of the dogmatic paradox. Thus, the nucleus of Blaga’s epistemological vision, the dogmatic paradox – a synthesis of the antinomies solved not in concrete level, but in transcendent one, creating a paradoxical logics – proves to be close to Gaston Bachelard’s transgressive theoretical constructions – the surrationalism and the philosophy of no –, as well as to Ştefan Lupaşcu’s integrative perspective of the dynamic logics of the contradictory. The subtly related nexus of theoretical ideas developed by Blaga, Bachelard and Lupașcu appear to be essential milestones in the avant-garde of the paradigmatic chain of the included middle, opening it towards the present European episteme.

AbstractGaston Bachelard's thought remains a continual source of inspiration for a phenomenological psychology that takes human habitation as a fundamental given and as an abiding mystery of the human condition. the following essay explores the ideas Bachelard developed in the course of his study of poetry. It examines in particular his vision of imagination as a unique passage way by means of which we reach an inhabitable, intersubjective and fully human world. Within that perspective, our lives are constantly renewed by the appearance of a revealing image or a telling metaphor. Each time that we are awakened by this appeal we commemorate the birth and rebirth of a human world.

Sylvia Plath’s poetry has received considerable critical attention with respect to a wide range of themes and critical approaches. Variously labeled feminist, political, mythical and suicidal, Plath has been subject to enormous biographical scrutiny but the critical responses available today offer increasingly nuanced understandings of Plath’s work.  However, sufficient attention has not been given to the significant prevalence of images of places and spaces in Plath’s poetry. With particular focus on a selection of poems from The Collected Poems, this thesis argues that the personae in the poems confront “infelicitous places” and that the poems resonate with a tension between place (here referring to a space that is delimited by certain values) and space (in the sense of an expansion without the restrictions of place). What I here refer to as infelicitous place can be understood as an inversion of Gaston Bachelard’s conception of “felicitous space” and accounts for the way in which places in Plath’s poetry are marred with anxiety and ambivalence as opposed to Bachelard’s benevolent, protective spaces. The places and spaces in the poems are dealt with in relation to the notion of infelicitous place, as well as the significance of walls and the affinity between place and poetics.

Is it possible today to speak of the philosophy of space compared to the thought of GastonBachelard ? Divided between science and imagination , all his work has a clear demarcationbetween the axes of knowledge , reason , rationality, and the axes of the poetic imagination ,imagination and material imagination. The conceptual framework of this research lies in the greatdialectic Bachelard , who plays a mediating role and link between the world of science and theimages. The space can be a practical and theoretical representation of this permanent dialectization .Space is a continuous link between the axes of an imaginary geometry and intimate topologies ofthe soul and that is why the search for a categorical space in the work of Gaston Bachelard isdivided into three parts demonstrate : the first is to highlight the presence of the space, in allBachelardian work , the second passage part in which a strong dialectization consists of a rich basicconnections and between connections and large small , up and down , in and out , and the thirdpassage opens on the news where the design philosophy of Bachelardian space, composed ofrelations between dialectics relates to modern and contemporary architecture

The philosophical significance of the works of Bachelard is generally contained within a simple, two-Fold speciality, science and poetry. Although the double specificity of the work is evident, it often leads to a vulgate which obscures the richness and complexity of the works to such an extent that it is just simpler to speak of the philosophy of Bachelard in the singular. Is it relevant to uphold the theory that Bachelard develops a philosophy in the true sense of the word, whereas the normal interpretation of his works reduces them to a reflection on rationality and imaginary? How can one defend the idea that an integral philosophy exists in the works of Bachelard, which is developed from his regional research, but which exceeds the disciplinary framework of epistemology and the poetic to experiment "adventurous ideas" and more audacious suppositions? We believe we need to re-Evaluate the theories of Bachelard and to grant him a place of honour in twentieth century French philosophy. We undertake this re-Evaluation by proposing the reconstruction of the pluralist philosophy of Bachelard, on the basis of an overall interpretation of his work and a reading of the whole corpus. We therefore defend the thesis whereby the philosophy of Bachelard, both theoretical and practical, is a coherent pluralism, with psychological, ontological and axiological implications, so that the pluralism of Bachelard unfolds around not only a conception of the mind (Part I), of the "being-In-The-World" and concepts of existence (Part II), but also perfectionism in leading the good life, within the scope of a complete anthropology (Part III)

This dissertation proposes a study of the lyric from Gilberto Mendonça Teles and has the goal of show the importance of image and imagination in the creative process of his lyric below the point of view of phenomenology of Gaston Bachelard . For this phenomenologist the poetic image is a new being of language that deeply enlightens our conscience, making the literary creation one of the destinations of the word. This makes the poet is seen as a special issuer, whom diction opens a future of language. The poetic image is established as a kind of valve that releases the perception and provides deep dazzle to the reader, for it is through the imagination that our souvenirs are rebuilt in discontinuous and lacunar temporal movements, providing us,through the work of art, the insertion in the creative moment of revival. The necessary theoretical basis for this work was also based on studies of lyrical from Octavio Paz, which deals with significant multiple faces of the poetic word. These studies assumed a gloomy and unprecedented universe in which the unpredictable meanings are established in the interstices between words. Thus, we seek to show the poetic transcendence in lyric of Gilberto Mendonça Teles, from reverie and expressive power of images that allow the poet a dilation of the semantics of the words, so that they are able to reveal the essence of the lyric voice transformed into language.

Abstract Bachelard, a philosopher, helps introduce a phenomenological sensitivity to organizational investigations. The poetic and the scientific are two different but compatible aspects of organizing. By abandoning a science of organizing dominated by analytical philosophy that dominates US organization theory, we can reconnect to the continental traditions of Bachelard, as well as Husserl and Schütz. Phenomenology returns to questions of reason in lived experiences, forgotten when social science only focuses on instrumental rationality and artificial intelligence.

Abstract Gaston Bachelard’s phenomenology of the imagination proposes to explore the human values of poetic images. After summarizing Bachelard’s background and work, this chapter presents his conception of the imagination and the phenomenological method he developed to study poetic images. This method proposes to meditate on literary images that deal with the materiality of the world (houses, trees, caves, volcanoes, lakes, etc.), and to explore these images through poetic reveries by activating a formal, material, and dynamic imagination. The chapter then explores the avenues of renewal that Bachelard’s phenomenology of the imagination has brought or could bring to Management and Organizational Studies (MOS) with respect to the themes of creativity, organizational poetics, issues related to the transformation of the material environment of organizations (including ecological issues), methods for exploring the imagination within organizations and research activities, and management education.

Chapter 3 retains focus on the moral aspects of a hangover but links them specifically to debates in the long eighteenth century about work and idleness. It maintains that the hangover undermined Britain’s identity as an industrious trading nation. Hangovers disclosed social anxieties about civic duty, the real level of industriousness of the British workforce and the moral status of the unoccupied man and woman of means in the long eighteenth century. The chapter makes this argument through analysis of the propaganda of the ‘gin craze’, depictions of marital tensions in poetry, drama and prose and in a study of the figures of the bachelor and the socialite.

Patrick Kavanagh is unique among modern Irish writers in that he spent the first half of his life as a largely self-educated small farmer in Monaghan, while struggling to find a voice for that experience as a writer. In his early poetry and his autobiography, The Green Fool, he sought to render the realities of farming and to escape romantic literariness; ‘Inniskeen Road’ and ‘Shancoduff’ are key breakthrough poems in this effort. While he was later to reject the didacticism of The Great Hunger, the achievement of this extraordinary long poem is the combination of inside and outside perspectives on the stunted life of the bachelor farmer Patrick Maguire. Moving away from Monaghan to Dublin allowed Kavanagh to re-create his farming world in the comic novel Tarry Flynn and later lyrics such as ‘Threshing Morning’, ‘A Christmas Childhood’ and ‘Art McCooey’.

In early 1937, George sails with Harper’s Bazaar editor Carmel Snow for work in Paris. George adapts to Snow’s demanding style but socializes with old friends like Eardley Knollys and Jacques Guérin. George photographs the “weird giantess,” English poet Edith Sitwell. He crosses to London for additional assignments. Returned to New York City, George has four portraits in MOMA’s massive historical survey “Photography: 1839–1937,” including a striking new Cocteau portrait. GPL is prominently featured in an innovative arts and fashion magazine, Bachelor, discreetly targeting cosmopolitan homosexuals. Via Lincoln Kirstein, George befriends three notable “realist” painters, Paul Cadmus, his lover Jared French, and Jared’s wife Margaret Hoenig. Forming the photography collective PaJaMa, the trio document male friends on the summer beaches of the Northeast in ritualistic poses. Kirstein will marry Paul’s sister Fidelma, while the PaJaMa threesome, visitors to Stone-blossom, frequently sketch portraits of George, Monroe, and Glenway, members of the so-called Homintern.

The Overhaul and Sightlines extend Jamie’s call for attentive, observational writing; what she describes as a “new kind of work that renegotiate[s] our place in the natural world.” This involves not only revisiting our human relationship with “wild” nature, but also acknowledging ourselves as a species with its own natural history: a locus of nature as well as culture. The question of home and belonging is thus an enduring theme in Jamie’s work. Jamie’s keen observations of nature, place and people recognise the limitations as well as the potential of human dwelling in the natural world. Rejecting romanticism, she suggests that while we are certainly capable of appreciating the transcendent in nature, we are also “animal bodies” (Sightlines 5), “a species […] hoping for the marvellous” (The Overhaul 3) who encounter the world through the physical as much as the aesthetic. This chapter considers The Overhaul and Sightlines as explorations in ecopoetics, searching for alternative ways of negotiating our relationship with the natural world. These two collections interrogate the writer’s ability to restore a “sense of ourselves as creatures”, the vital element of reconnection with the more-than-human world which Gaston Bachelard identified as one of poetry’s greatest gifts.

"We present an old process developed more than a hundred years ago at American universities. It means professional, journalistic and academic forms of writing. It also includes poetry and narrative forms. Creative writing has always been at the heart of university education. Today, there are more than 500 bachelor's degree programs and 250 master's degree programs in this subject in the United States. In other fields of study, it is mandatory to enrol in this subject. After World War II, it came to Europe, first to England and later to Germany. Here, ""... since the 'Sturm und Drang' (1770-1789) of the early Goethe period, the autodidactic poetics of the cult of genius prevailed. The teachability of creative writing has been disputed ever since and its dissemination has therefore always had a hard time in Germany"" [von Werder 2000:99]. It is rarely found in the curricula of German universities. At the Dresden University of Applied Sciences, we have been practicing it for five years with great response from social work students. They learn different methods: professional writing for partners and administration, poetic writing for children's or adult groups, scientific language for their final thesis and later publications. Although we offer it as an elective, more than 80% of students choose it. Final papers are also written on these creative topics or using the methods learned. ""Writing forces economy and precision. What swirls chaotically around in our heads at the same time has to be ordered into succession when writing"" [Bütow in Tieger 2000:9]. The winners of this training are not only our former students! Children in after-school programs and youth clubs improve their writing skills through play. Patients in hospitals work on their biographies. People who only write on the computer discover slow and meaningful writing, activating their emotional system. Therefore, this paper will show how clients benefit from creative writing skills of their social workers and what gain other disciplines can expect as well."

Abstract: The Modulor is the first example of the human measure. The architecture of the second part of the twenty century was influenced by Le Corbusier works. The development of the thought of Gaston Bachelard is contextualized in the second half of the twentieth century too, he writhed the Poetic of the Space on 1957. His philosophy was influenced based on the study of the four natural elements, up to the conception of intimate space, namely that of the house. The Bachelard house description corresponds to the Carl Gustav Jung’s theses about the soul life and the soul stadium. In this paper we analyse the correspondences between an intimate conception of the lived space and an architectural progressive thought. Throw the examples of Le Corbusier’s Unité d’Habitation and of Le Corbusier’s Cabanon we try to explain the emotional, intimate and secret dynamic of a current Space Philosophy.
