Although manufacturing firms support economic development, wealth creation and poverty alleviation, a dismal performance has been reported. In Kenya, the share of gross domestic product (GDP) from manufacturing sector has remained below 10 per cent while its growth rate remained at about 5 percent in the last 10 years. This has been attributed to low innovation and technology diffusion. This study examined the effects of IT capability on firm performance. The study was anchored on Resource Based View, and Dynamic Capability Theory. Positivism philosophical approach, descriptive and explanatory research design were adopted. Using stratified and random sampling techniques, a sample of 222 manufacturing firms from Nairobi City County, was obtained. A semi-structured questionnaire was prepared and used for data collection. To ascertain reliability, Cronbach’s alpha coefficient measure of 0.875 was obtained. Research experts confirmed validity of the study instrument. The data was analysed through descriptive statistics to condense the survey data. To test hypotheses, inferential statistics was used. The results showed a positive significant effect of IT infrastructure capability (B=0.247, p=0.005 < 0.05), IT personnel capability (B=0.226, p=0.044 < 0.05), IT management capability (B=0.187, p=0.018 < 0.05) and IT reconfiguration capability (B=0.291, p=0.001 < 0.05) on performance. The study findings also exhibited a 49.2 per cent explanatory power of IT capability on firm performance. Study findings provide a framework for improving firm performance. Subsequently, firm managers should create interventions on IT capability to enhance and sustain superior firm performance.

Digital technologies play a major role in reducing the cost of operations in tour firms. The main focus of the study was to find out the adoption of digital technologies as a driver of cost leadership strategy in tour firms within Nairobi City County. The specific objective was to investigate the influence of mobile applications on cost leadership strategy in tour firms in Nairobi City County. Embedded research design was applied in the study. The study adopted the null hypothesis that mobile applications had no statistically significant influence on cost leadership strategy in tour firms within Nairobi City County. The study population was 278 tour firms obtained from the Kenya Association of Tour Operators (KATO) list where a sample of 164 tour firms were selected through the application of Yemane’s (1967) sample size formula. 10 tour firm mangers were selected for interviews. Systematic random sampling was utilized for the determination of the sample size of 164 tour firms. Semi-structured questionnaires and interview schedules were utilized as data instruments. Questionnaires were filled by tour consultants while interviews were conducted with tour firm managers. 133 respondents filled out the questionnaires representing 81% response rate while 7 interviewees were conducted representing 70% response rate. Both descriptive and inferential statistics were used during data analysis. The study utilized both ANOVA and multiple regression tests to test the hypotheses, and influence between the adoption of digital technology and cost leadership strategy. The results of the R Square equals 0.919 therefore revealing that 91.9% of cost leadership is attributed to mobile applications. The study confirmed there was a statistical significance (p =.000) between mobile applications and cost leadership. Mobile applications as a digital technology tool accounted for a positive significant increase (B = 637) in cost leadership strategy. The study concluded that there is a positive strong influence between the adoption of mobile applications and cost leadership strategy. The study recommends that tour firms should fully adopt digital technologies to maximize cost control, minimize marketing costs, and promote operational efficiency

This article examines the adaptive capacities of real estate firms in New York City in light of the increased risks of urban flooding. This exploratory research attempts to shed light on how and why firms of varying risk profiles are strategically adapting to these risks – if at all. Through the lens of a qualitative multi-criteria adaptive capacity framework, the results of six case studies are analyzed to identify what influences are shaping the actions and strategies of firms. The article examines the propositions that: (A) firms with observable strategies have undertaken ex post strategies which are principally driven by the firms’ financial bottom line; (B) firm strategies attribute little to no influence in their decisions to external or delayed costs and/or impacts relating to social and environmental influences; and, (C) firms with the comparatively most robust adaptive capacities will be those who: (i) are most aware of their vulnerabilities; and (ii) are themselves comparatively more vulnerable to the immediate risks associated with urban flooding. While the evidence largely supports the propositions, the results of this research can help shape the development of intelligence and strategic units within firms as they develop a capacity to adapt to ever changing conditions.

<p>A cytogenetic analysis of meristem cells of <em>Triticum aestivum</em><em> </em>L. of primary rootlets, affected by soil heavy metal (HM) contamination in the industrial zones of SC “Poltavachimmash” in Poltava city, PPC “Specialized company for thermal processing of firm household garbage” (SCTPFHG) in Khrakiv city, PrSC “Avtoradiator” in Mariupol city, CC (commercial company) “Poltava concrete product plant” (PCPP) in Poltava city, SJC “Luhansk accumulator producing company” in Luhansk city, UC “Lubny water supply station” in Lubny city and the territory near B. Khmelnytskyi Street in Kostiantynivka, was made. The frequency of aberrant cells of sprout root meristem of cultivar Al’batros odes’kyi was 1.37-2.30 % and that of cultivar Zymoiarka – 1.22-1.84 %, which exceeded the indicators of a background level by 1.9-3 and 1.6-2,5 times, correspondingly (Svatky village, Poltava region). The highest cytogenetic activity was recorded within the territory of the industrial zones of PrSC “Avtoradiator”, SC “Poltavachimmash”, SJC “Luhansk accumulator producing company”, the soils there were characterized by intensive Cd, Pb і Zn contamination. Significant differences in the levels of cytogenetic disorders depending on a wheat cultivar genotype, induced by high concentrations of soil toxic metals in the industrial zone of PPC “Specialized company for thermal processing of firm household garbage” and the territory near B. Khmel’nytskyi Street in Kostiantynivka, can be caused by physiological-genetic peculiarities of the plants and a possible effect of non-differentiated factors, specific for each territory. Complex effect of low HM concentrations, typical for soil contamination of the industrial zone of CC “Poltava concrete product plant”, showed the lowest cytogenetic activity. Soil contamination with HM in the industrial zones and the areas affected by industrial releases resulted in a wide spectrum of cytogenetic disorders: fragmentation, advance and lagging chromosomes, formation of chromosome and chromatid bridges, ring chromosomes, micronuclei. A significant increase of the cells with advance and lagging chromosomes was seen under the effect of HM soil contamination of the industrial zones of PrSC “Avtoradiator”, SC “Poltavachimmash”, UC “Lubny water supply station” and the territory near B. Khmel’nytskyi Street in Kostiantynivka, Cd, Pb і Zn predominating among them. The induction with high frequency of aneuploid cells shows active interaction of HM with the threads of spindle division which allows using the violation fact of chromosome segregation as an indicator of HM contamination of the environment. As a result of wheat seed sprouting in the soil with the highest HM content (PPC “Specialized Company for thermal processing of firm household garbage”, PrSC “Avtoradiator”, SC “Poltavachimmash”, UC “Lubny water supply station” and the territory near B. Khmelnytskyi Street in Kostiantynivka), besides mentioned-above chromosome aberrations and mitosis pathology in meristem cells, the following complicated cytogenetic disorders occurred: single/pair fragments and bridge; pair fragments and lagging chromosomes; pair fragments, bridge and ring chromosome; pair fragments, chromosome bridge and micronucleus. High cytogenetic activity of HM soil contamination, caused by industrial releases, confirms genetic threat for the organisms of above-ground ecosystems and suggests the necessity to work out a national program of large-scale genetic monitoring over techno-genic contamination of the territories in the industrial regions of Ukraine.</p>

Kupang City, located in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) province, stands out for its notable success in fostering tolerance among religious communities. Its significance lies in (a) being the largest city in NTT, (b) having a longstanding history of Islamic development, and (c) the proclamation of local leaders demonstrating a firm commitment to preserving Kupang as an exemplar of religious harmony. In light of these aspects, the authors conducted qualitative field research on Muslim village communities in Kupang to explore how harmony is maintained among religious groups. This research is based on the theoretical assumption that understanding the world requires a native point of approach, relying on the researcher's perspective. The findings reveal that a crucial foundation for harmony among religious communities is the residents' highly tolerant attitude, reflecting the active tolerance embedded in local wisdom. This local wisdom is further reinforced by the recognition of diversity as a defining feature of Kupang City's identity. The actualization of this value is evident in religious and cultural traditions, exemplified by the Siripuan tradition in Airmata Village. The dynamic nature of harmony among religious communities is underscored, with one contributing factor being the lower positive feelings experienced by minorities compared to the majority. Addressing this discrepancy is crucial for anticipating and mitigating potential challenges among Muslim minorities.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to extend Zablah et al.’s (2012) findings regarding the proper way to treat customer orientation (CO) to the study of CO among B-B salespeople in one of the most important emerging economies, India. Design/methodology/approach The authors of this study hired a professional market research firm based in Chennai, a large metropolitan city in Southern India, to manage data collection. The authors used a competing models approach to test the relationship between constructs. Findings CO among frontline employees operating in one of the largest emerging economies is best treated as a psychological construct that is both directly and indirectly related to performance via its ability to reduce stress and improve engagement. This finding strengthens the view of CO as a universal human work value and, more broadly, that such values operating across different cultural setting do exist. In addition, external customer mindset appears to offer a superior means to measure CO than does the widely used CO component of the SOCO scale. This conclusion is based not only upon the fact that it conceptually corresponds with the psychological nature of CO, but also that in this initial examination it exhibits a greater ability to explain employee job performance. Originality/value Managers who are able to screen and hire employees with greater CO work values should experience improved performance outcomes and also less customer ambiguity and greater satisfaction among their frontline employees. Since CO proscribes the proper way to deal with customers, greater levels of CO beliefs would counteract customer ambiguity among frontline employees operating in any environment. Accordingly, when filling frontline positions, managers should actively seek out employees who earnestly embrace the role of taking care of customers. Managers are advised to not only emphasize on salespeople whose foremost role is to take care of their customers but also to find ways to familiarize them with their products and to provide them with information regarding customer characteristics such as their background, the relationship history (especially past service and product failures), and unique preferences.

This paper looks at environmental conservation within the growing understanding of the urgent need to confront the two menaces of desertification and deforestation through afforestation schemes in the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) member countries. Deforestation is one of the main contributors to global greenhouse gas emissions, ecosystem degradation, and from there the rising cases of poverty in the developing world. Their impacts on the economy and environment of OIC member countries has been devastating. Desertification and deforestation are caused by human activities like logging, harmful farming practices, as well as haphazard cutting of trees in order to make way for city buildings and farms. The paper shows that poor handling of past responses to desertification problems can be solved with the right approaches. It first looks at existing approaches to the problem and causes of their failure. Then, it proposes an alternative model based on fiqh teachings and recent developments in Islamic economics and finance. The paper syntheses conventional and Islamic approaches towards solving the problems of desertification, deforestation, and rising temperatures in the OIC countries. It delineates specific functions and contributions of each one of (a) the Islamic state, (b) the institution of waqf, (c) Islamic finance, and (d) the Islamic firm.

Subject area Entrepreneurship, Entrepreneurial Marketing and Services Marketing. Study level/applicability The New Wella Salon case (B) is suitable for teaching at MBA level and last-year students of undergraduate-level courses in services marketing and entrepreneurship. Case overview This case discusses the challenges faced by a young entrepreneur Mr Meer, who has successfully brought a new trend in the salon industry of Sukkur City. The new trend focuses on trendier and sophisticated services keeping in mind the changing mindset of consumer and services provided by leading salons of Pakistan. Though, the new salon has proved to be a great success. But recent developments have badly shaken the well-established brand. The most challenging issue was the loss of customers to competition, showing a negative sign for the future of this leading brand of local salon industry. He was confused and upset about the future of the leading salon brand of the local industry. He knew that he has to make some strategic decisions to secure his career and family business but appeared to be confused about how to operationalize these. He soon realized that word-of-mouth publicity and running a Facebook page would not be enough to promote his business effectively; so, he has to explore some new ways to promote his unique and nascent service other than advertising. But what should those be? To capture the growing demand of trendy services and scattered populations as a result of growing competition from similar salons, Meer has chalked down two different options: open another salon at a promising avenue and/or offer more services. Expected learning outcomes To identify and differentiate between traits of an entrepreneur and traditional businessman. To discuss how services companies can create and sustain competitive advantage. To understand the various strategic aspects of the small businesses that lever their decision-making. To work out strategic choices available to a new entrepreneurial firm, evaluate the alternatives and devise strategies for successful expansion of the business. To assess the usefulness of traditional and non-traditional marketing channels for promoting a small business. Supplementary materials Teaching notes are available for educators only. Whether benign or malignant, laryngeal and neck masses may involve the upper airway and obstruct breathing. While surgically-resectable malignancies are generally extirpated with adequate margins of normal tissue, benign lesions are usually excised conservatively. However, even benign masses may behave malignantly, necessitating more aggressive surgical resection. We present one such case. CASE REPORT A 35-year-old man from Cotabato City consulted due to difficulty of breathing. He had a six-year history of progressively enlarging anterior neck mass with intermittent dyspnea, foreign body sensation, progressive dysphagia and hoarseness over the last three months. Physical examination revealed a well-defined, 5 x 6 cm smooth, firm, non-tender anterior neck mass that moved with deglutition. Rigid endoscopy showed a right supraglottic mass with bulging of the right glottic and subglottic area, with a less than 10% airway opening. (Figure 1A) Both arytenoids were visibly mobile, but glottic closure was impaired. (Figure 1B) Tracheostomy and suspension laryngoscopy with biopsy yielded inconclusive results (fibromuscular tissue) and fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) of the anterior neck mass only revealed blood and colloid. Contrast computed tomography of the neck showed a well-marginated, hypodense, thick-walled, heterogeneously enhancing mass in the right laryngeal fossa measuring 2.86 x 1.78 cm with a larger extension anteriorly measuring 4.66 x 2.52 cm. Effacement of the epiglottis and aryepiglottic fold was noted. The hyoid and thyroid cartilage were intact, and the thyroid gland was normal. (Figure 2A, B) Because of inconclusive histopathological and cytological results, an incision biopsy of the anterior neck mass was performed. Histopathological evaluation revealed spindle cell mesenchymal proliferation, and immunohistochemical stains showed positive immunoreactivity for CD34, with a weakly positive S-100 and negative SMA, favoring a solitary fibrous tumor.

Ground-motion time histories which are compatible with the uniform hazard spectra (UHS) provided by the new national seismic hazard maps of the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC) are simulated. Time histories are simulated for the following cities: Halifax, La Malbaie, Québec, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Prince George, Tofino, Vancouver, and Victoria. The target UHS for the time history simulations are the GSC 5% damped horizontal-component spectra for "firm ground" (Class B) sites for an annual probability of 1/500. The Canadian Council on Earthquake Engineering is currently considering the adoption of these maps as the seismological basis for the earthquake design requirements for future editions of the National Building Code of Canada. It is therefore useful to have compatible time histories for these spectra, in order that dynamic analysis methods requiring the use of time histories can be employed. The simulated records provide a realistic representation of ground motion for the earthquake magnitudes and distances that contribute most strongly to hazard at the selected cities and probability level. For each selected city, two horizontal components are generated for a moderate earthquake nearby, and two horizontal components are generated for a larger earthquake farther away. These records match the short- and long-period ends of the target UHS, respectively. These simulations for local and regional crustal earthquakes are based on a point-source stochastic simulation procedure. For cities in British Columbia, records are also simulated for a scenario M8.5 earthquake on the Cascadia subduction zone, using a stochastic finite-fault simulation model. Four different rupture scenarios are considered. The ground motions for this scenario event are not associated with a specific probability level, but current information suggests that their probability of occurrence is comparable to that of the 1/500 UHS (the probabilistic analyses performed for the national hazard maps do not explicitly include the Cascadia subduction event). Thus it would be reasonable to conduct engineering analyses for cities in British Columbia using both the simulated crustal-event motions and the simulated Cascadia-event motions for the Cascadia event. The time histories simulated for this study are available free of charge to all interested parties.Key words: compatible time-histories, seismic hazard, ground motions.

Barry Cross was born at Coulsden, Surrey, the second son of Hubert and Elsie Cross (nee Richards). Hubert Cross was a life assurance cashier with Scottish Provident in the City of London. In the First World War he served with the Honorable Artillery Company in Palestine as ‘a private and proud of it’. Untroubled by career ambitions he was content with a routine job, family life, and playing rugby at county level. His sons remembered him as kind, firm and a little distant, while their mother was more indulgent and the provider of puddings. With the possible exception of Penuel Cross, a paternal great–grandfather, who was a bass chorister and lay vicar at Winchester Cathedral for 43 years, there was little trace of a creative or scholarly impulse on either Barry's father's or mother's side. Yet Barry and his younger brother John (who became Professor of Politics at University College Cardiff) had academic ambitions and well thought–out career goals from an early age. This study uses the Weighted Sum Model to analyze location possibilities for a new manufacturing plant based on six variables, including transportation cost, labor cost, taxes, utilities cost, closeness to suppliers, and proximity to customers. The data was collected and normalized using the min-max method, and weight values were assigned to each criterion based on their relative importance. The Weighted Sum Model formula was then used to determine the weighted sum for each alternative location, and City B was identified as the best location for the new manufacturing plant, followed by City A and lastly City C. The Weighted Sum Model provides an objective and systematic approach to evaluating location alternatives, allowing decision-makers to weigh the importance of each criterion and consider multiple factors in making informed decisions. The strategy is versatile and can be modified to numerous decision-making scenarios, making it a helpful tool for firms wishing to make location decisions based on data-driven approaches. In conclusion, the Weighted Sum Model is a useful tool for analyzing location possibilities for a new manufacturing plant and can help firms make informed and data-driven decisions regarding the optimum location for their operations

<b>Wprowadzenie</b>. <b>Materiały i metody</b>. Autor dokonał analizy literatury przedmiotu, czasopism, źródeł internetowych oraz kampanii społecznych LEGO i wybranych zestawów klocków LEGO City. <b>Wyniki</b>. Współcześnie klocki LEGO coraz śmielej wkraczają w dorosły świat, w którym stają się silnym elementem popkulturowym oraz „zabawką” społecznie zaangażowaną. Firma LEGO zachęca dorosłych do wspólnych zabaw z dziećmi, propaguje postawy prozdrowotne i proekologiczne. Wspiera także osoby z niepełnosprawnościami oraz popiera różne modele rodziny w myśl zasady „każdy jest niesamowity”.

The idea of replacing revenues from alcohol sale with income from cinema attendance was put forward by L. Trotsky in Soviet Russia in the early 1920s. At the stage of transition from silent cinema to the sound one this idea received a significant number of supporters. Anyhow attendance statistics proved a considerable gap between alcohol profitability and yield, calculated on theatre booking. In order to heal the situation quite a number of new cinemas had to be built. Since the state did not have adequate resources at its disposal, it was decided to refurbish the churches into cinema theatres. As a result the two important aims were to be gained: efficient increase of attendance and effective antireligious propaganda. Achievements of Soviet cinema in the early 1930s supported the idea of cinema to triumph over alcohol. Iosif Stalin proclaimed the replacement of the income from vodka with income from cinema as an official party and state program: expanding industrial base of the Soviet cinema, making more films, increasing the film circulation, building more cinemas. I. Stalins idea was to be realized by the chairman of the GUKF B. Shumyatsky. Acquainted with American and European experience, he proposed a number of reforms in the film industry, the key to which was the creation of the Cinema city in the South of the country, the Soviet Hollywood. As a result, the Soviet film industry had to be increased 10 times. But the project of the Cinema city was not approved by the government. While B. Shumyatsky was working over this project, the assets of the Soviet cinema were actually put on the slide. As a result, the output of film production in Russia decreased significantly, not allowing to execute the annual plan. Thus the idea to replace vodka income into cinema one turned out unfulfilled.

Empirical studies proved that good corporate governance had a positive link to the success of an organization. Good in directing and managing organizational processes, structures, and information mean satisfaction guaranteed was given to all stakeholders. Essential factor like working atmosphere may be considered when looking into corporate governance as well as organizational success. However, limited literature focused on the importance of communication climate and its connection to corporate governance and organizational success. Hence, this study looked into the predicting effect of communication climate to perceived corporate governance and organizational success. A total of ninety-eight rank and file employees voluntarily participated in accomplishing three questionnaires such as the Communication Climate Inventory by Costigen & Schiedler; Corporate Governance Survey adapted from Wickramanayake’s Seven Characteristics of Corporate Governance; and Organizational Success Survey adapted from Ilyas & Rafig used to measure communication climate, corporate governance, and organizational success respectively. Results revealed that communication climate was a predictor of perceived corporate governance and organizational success. This implied that the role of supervisors in setting work conditions was essential on how rank and file employees perceived corporate governance and organizational success.ReferencesAbdu Rashid, M., Azman bin Othman, M., Zainudin bin Othman, M., Ain bt Arshad, F. This paper presents an account of the two disastrous events that occurred in the final month of the 1984-85 season of the English Football League: the lethal fire at the stadium of Bradford City and the fan violence at the Heysel Stadium in Brussels on the occasion of the 1985 European Cup Final between Liverpool and Juventus. Some 57 people died in the Bradford fire, and 38 people (mainly supporters of the Italian champions, Juventus) died in Brussels. The two connected purposes of this paper are (a) to interpret and to challenge the conflation of these two, quite different, events in the government enquiry into the Bradford fire, as well as in the ongoing discourse of the mass media, and (b) to provide a critical rebuttal of the increasingly confident and influential writings of radical right journalists and “intellectuals” as to the meaning of soccer violence in Britain in the late 1980s.

Fossil fuels in transportation are a significant source of local emissions in and around cities; thus, decarbonising transportation can reduce both greenhouse gases (GHGs) and air pollutants (APs). However, the degree of these reductions depends on what replaces fossil fuels. Today, GHG and AP mitigation strategies are typically ‘decoupled’ as they have different motivations and responsibilities. This study investigates the ancillary benefits on (a) APs if the transport sector is decarbonised, and (b) GHGs if APs are drastically cut and (c) the possible co-benefits from targeting APs and GHGs in parallel, using an energy-system optimisation model with a detailed and consistent representation of technology and fuel choices. While biofuels are the most cost-efficient option for meeting ambitious climate-change-mitigation targets, they have a very limited effect on reducing APs. Single-handed deep cuts in APs require a shift to zero-emission battery electric and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (BEVs, HFCVs), which can result in significant upstream GHG emissions from electricity and hydrogen production. BEVs powered by ‘green’ electricity are identified as the most cost-efficient option for substantially cutting both GHGs and APs. A firm understanding of these empirical relationships is needed to support comprehensive mitigation strategies that tackle the range of sustainability challenges facing cities.

The challenge of environmental toxicity and the associated unrelenting efforts of man to abate or eradicate its hazards are lifelong efforts. The present study investigated the impact of Ikhueniro dumpsite leachate in Benin City, Nigeria on the hematological blood profile and blood film of Wistar rats. A total of 30 Wistar rats were acclimatized for two weeks and randomly distributed into three groups A to C; group A served as control, while groups B and C were orally administered Leachate only and Leachate + Abatement (Dialium guineenses aqueous leaf extract), respectively, once every 48 hours for 30 days. After the exposure period, the surviving rats in group A and half of the rats in group B and C were examined and sacrificed. The experiment continued with the remaining rats in groups B and C. Group B was given only clean water and C only abatement following ealier stated schedule, after which the surviving rats were sacrificed and samples collected. Hematological analysis showed that leachate administration in Wistar rats caused an increase in white blood cells (27.65%), platelet count (13.35%), and platelet crit (45.45%); with a decrease in red blood cell count (7.52%), hemoglobin (5.40%) and hematocrit (6.12%) of Wistar rats when compared to the control. Geimsa-stained blood film revealed the presence of polymorphs and basophils in the blood film of rats administered dumpsite leachate. Nevertheless, when leachate administration was stopped in the group of rats where it was previously administered, there was a slight improvement in some blood hematological indices. However, the administration of Dialiumguineense leaf extracts better-improved blood hematological indices. The findings of this study indicate that Ikhueniro dumpsite leachate negatively impacted blood hematological indices in Wistar rats. Dumpsite leachate should be handled and treated carefully to avoid potential health hazards in animals.

Film noir is one of American cinema’s most renowned and well-studied phenomena. It is a cycle of films made during the 1940s and 1950s, mostly produced as B-movies, i.e., cheaper films presented as part of a double feature. This is one of the most important reasons why it took such a long time for American film scholars to address the importance of film noir. The first monograph on film noir, Panorama du film noir américain, was published in France in 1955, and this work by Borde and Chaumeton remains one of the most valuable studies covering this important cycle. Generally speaking, French film scholars are those most responsible for highlighting the value of American, and especially Hollywood, film while significant American contributions to the study of film noir only began in the 1970s. Like few American films that preceded it, The Killers presented a completely dark world filled with hapless protagonists, where the only location that evokes even a glimmer of happiness is a terrace on the edge of the city. All other locations are a vivid reflection of the state of mind of the film’s main characters, lost in the dark labyrinths of the metropolis, victims of the unfathable threads that fate uses to play with their lives. Utilizing a combination of extremely claustrophobic locations and flashbacks that further fragment an already very complex narrative, Siodmak created a work that is one of the most faithful evocations of fatalism in American film.

One of the worst hotel fires in the USA occurred at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada, on November 21, 1980. This tragedy claimed 84 lives and injured 300 others. The toll might have been higher were it not for Air Force assistance.Nine U.S. Air Force helicopters responded swiftly to the scene in answer to the city of Las Vegas plea for help. The call came from the Metropolitan Police Department at 7:38 a.m. and got an immediate response from the Nellis Air Force Base (AFB) Consolidated Command Post. By 7:55 a.m., the first Huey helicopter was airborne. Less than 20 minutes later it was hovering over the MGM Grand Hotel. Evacuation of survivors began immediately, according to Major Larry B. Hải Ninh’s The Little Girl of Hà Nội (1974) captures the traumatic war causalities caused by the US B-52 bombing campaign in December 1972 through the memories of a child witness figure. While the US media typically portrayed Vietnamese children as helpless victims, and mainstream North Vietnamese media portrayed them as heroes, the film presents its child protagonist as both a victim and care agent within her community’s care network. The essay shows that Little Girl foregrounds the caring capability of a wounded community by using care as a structural force and a central aesthetic. I argue that Little Girl produces an aesthetics of care, including visual and sonic motifs to inscribe the tender tone that underscores the images of the damaged city. In this way, the film shows that care has the potential to reframe the narrative of war while avoiding the dominant frozen trope of traumatic memories.

The objective of this empirical study is to determine: (a) the underlying variables of the travel motivations related to a coastal city; and (b) the motivational dimensions that predict return, recommendation, and saying positive things about a coastal city as loyalty variables. This project utilized an in situ investigation carried out in Lima, a coastal city located on the Pacific Ocean near Peru with important natural and cultural attractions. The researchers used 381 questionnaires that were analyzed through factor analysis, in addition to the stepwise multiple regression method. Reesults identified six underlying variables or motivational factors: “culture and nature”, “authentic coastal experience”, “novelty and social interaction”, “learning”, “sun and beach”, and “nightlife”. Regarding loyalty, the “novelty and social interaction” dimension is the most important predictor of return and the “authentic coastal experience” dimension is the most important predictor of recommending and saying positive things about a coastal city. To motivate a return, events could be created on the beach to motivate novelty, as well as increase recommendations and the amount of positive things said about the destination; educational and sports activities and workshops could also be created with the community and the coastal environment. Results can be used by firms for preparing information for new customers in order to increase trip intention and improve guides for destination marketing organizations (DMOs).

The role of social support in the mental health of formerly incarcerated Latino men (FILM) is an issue overlooked in public health prevention efforts. The objectives of this analysis were to (a) describe the levels of social support perceived and received by FILM; (b) identify the associations, if any, between levels of social support and mental health indicators such as depression and anxiety; and (c) explore the impact of familism and hypermasculinity on the receptivity of social support and the potential role of these factors in mediating associations between social support and mental health indicators. To accomplish the objectives, we conducted a cross-sectional survey with FILM ( n = 259), ages 18 to 59, in New York City, and one nominated member of their social network ( n = 130 dyads). In this analysis, we examined four dimensions of social support (instrumental, informational, appraisal, and emotional) from two perspectives: provided (as reported by members of the social networks) and perceived (as reported by FILM). The major outcome variables for this analysis were the presence/absence of major anxiety and depressive symptoms. Our logistic regression analyses suggest that perceived emotional support was inversely associated with both anxiety and depression. Our findings suggest that familism mediated the association between perceived emotional support and anxiety/depression. Therefore, we must consider designing network enhancement interventions that focus on both FILM and their social support systems.

In this article, street art is understood as an alternative comparing to institutionalized art in the city space. In this context the article discusses a number of art projects of the French street artist JR. His street art projects are analyzed: “Women Are Heroes” (Rio de Janeiro, 2008–2009), “Portrait of a Generation” (Paris, 2004–2006), as well as collaborative projects – the art series “New York City Ballet Art Series” (New York, 2014), the film ballet “Les Bosquets” (New York, 2015). It is noted that the specifics of the pervasive art of JR is determined by: (1) the synthesis of arts – an organic combination and equal interaction of photography, ballet choreography and cinema in a single artistic production, which aesthetically organizes the spiritual environment of citizens’ life; (2) blurring the boundaries between high and low art, which the artist achieves by (a) involving an accidental (more often – unprepared) viewer into the world of art, (b) integrating a specific local community as a full participant, into the artistic process of creating an art object in the city space; (3) combining the commercial aspect of the artist’s creativity and independence in artistic experience (in particular, in collaborative projects with the New York City Ballet). It is noted that collaborating with the theatre, as well as previous mature projects, JR attempts to prove his idea that the purpose of art is to make people think and change perceptions.

Abstract This article focuses on contemporary Chinese film director Jia Zhangke 賈樟柯 (b. 1970–) and his engagement with what critical/cultural theorist Fredric Jameson (b. 1934- ) calls geopolitical aesthetics or cognitive mapping. Through the county-level city (xiancheng 縣城) perspective, the block (bankuai 板塊) structure, the interplay of real and fictional, and the intertextual and transmedial references, Jia explores the possibilities of representational forms and aspires to map and scan the otherwise unrepresentable totality that is global capitalism in China. In this essay, the author engages with Jia's film Shijie 世界 (The World; 2004) and examines the portrayal of the migrant workers and their performances in the World Park in Beijing, China. Focusing on political economy and social class, he suggests that The World renders visible the dialectic of mobility and immobility of the migrant workers within the context of global capitalism in China. Shifting gears to gender, he explains how the female migrant workers, dressed in lavish and extravagant costumes and performing exotic dances for the tourists in the World Park, can be regarded as a productive site for deciphering the otherwise imperceptible contradictions of globalizing China. In particular, the author analyzes the film's opening sequence to show that the world featured on-screen is located at the disjuncture between reality and fantasy.

Considering the age and longer service time of firefighters who have a substantial amount of field activities, they are exposed to chemical and biological risk factors, physical and mental stress, diverse and complex work environments, and repetitive motions, which may increase the rates of gastrointestinal disorders, musculoskeletal diseases, cancers, and cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, based on the regular specific health examination results for 215 firefighters who were working in the N fire department located in B metropolitan city, an analysis of occupational diseases was performed, which showed that the most common chronic disease was diabetes mellitus (28.8%), followed by hyperlipidemia (27.9%) and thoracic diseases (19.5%). This trend appears to be consistent with the incidence rates reported in a representative study of adult diseases in Korea. In addition, it was found that 82 officers maintained healthy states, while those who needed further medical inspection and those with clinical symptoms were more frequently exposed to disease when they were older and had longer service time; moreover, the fire captain and lieutenant had higher rates of disease.

The relevance of research. The ballet “Chasing Two Hares” was first investigated from the point of view of intertextual and intermedia connections. Also, for the first time, the analysis of the musical component of the film "Chasing Two Hares" directed by V. Ivanov and composer B. Gomolyaka has been carried out. The parameters of interaction between the ballet “Chasing Two Hares” and the film of the same name at different levels are derived: plot, genre, intonation and drama. Main objective of the study is to determine the intertextual and intermedia contexts of Y. Shevchenko’s ballet “Chasing Two Hares”. Research methodology. In the article, the following methods of historical and theoretical musicology were used: historical — to clarify the circumstances of the creation of musical works, comparative — to compare the musical series of the film “Chasing Two Hares” and Y. Shevchenko’s ballet, the method of intertextual analysis — to identify the qualitative indicators of connections between different musical texts, the method of genre-intonation analysis — for the detection of immanent intonational specific features of the named opuses. The results and conclusions of the study. The concepts of “intertextuality” and “intermediality” in the context of the genre of ballet are defined. The ballet “Chasing Two Hares” by Y. Shevchenko is analyzed from the point of view of its genre and intonation specifics, intertextual and intermedia connections with the film “Chasing Two Hares” directed by V. Ivanov. The musical component of the film, the author of which was V. Gomolyaka, is considered. The main methods of V. Gomolyaka’s work are determined when he creates intonation characteristics of the main characters of the film (Golokhvostov, Pronya) by means of musical expressiveness. Golokhvostov has two contrasting leit-themes, Pronya — one leit-theme, which undergoes intonation changes at the end of the film. The genre and intonation coordinates of the sound landscape of the city of Kyiv have been determined, which V. Gomolyaka reproduces the motley picture of the city of the late 19th and early 20th centuries (church bells, urban folklore, klezmer music, etc.). The intonation and literary genesis of the ballet “Chasing Two Hares” by Y. Shevchenko has been clarified. The parameters of interaction of the film “Chasing Two Hares” with Y. Shevchenko’s ballet are derived: plot (introduction of the heroine Madame), genre (involving the semantics of genres: waltz, march, song, couplets, etc.), intonation (rethinking of sound models by Y. Shevchenko and ideas of V. Gomolyaka). The intertextual and intermedia connections of Y. Shevchenko’s ballet with other literary texts are traced: M Starytsky’s play “Gentleman lip without teeth, or Chasing Two Hares”, I. Nechuy-Levitsky’s play “On Kozhemyaki” and the film “Chasing Two Hares” directed by V. Ivanov and composer V. Gomolyaka. The individual author’s style of the composer is comprehended from the point of view of work in the genre of ballet.

ABSTRACT Aim To present a unique case of ectopic orbital meningioma presenting in anteroinferior part of orbit. Introduction Primary orbital meningiomas arise from the optic nerve sheath and constitute 10 to 30% of orbital meningiomas. Secondary orbital meningiomas represent 70 to 90% of orbital meningiomas and are the direct extension of intracranial meningiomas into the orbit. Rarely, ectopic rests of arachnoid cells give rise to meningiomas separate from optic nerve sheath. Ectopic orbit meningioma is a rare tumor arising from ectopic arachnoidal tissue. The present case report describes an elderly patient with ectopic orbital meningioma in anteroinferior quadrant. Case report A 70-year-old female patient presented with slowly growing mass in the inferior part of right orbit. This lesion was firm in consistency and not fixed to skin or bone. Computed tomography scan showed a homogeneous mass lesion in anteroinferior part of right orbit without any bony changes. The orbital mass was excised. Anatomic-pathologic evaluation of the excised specimen revealed a benign meningioma of a meningotheliomatous type. Conclusion Ectopic orbital meningioma may present in elderly patients in anteroinferior orbit. Clinical significance An ectopic orbital meningioma should be considered in differential diagnosis of firm orbital mass presenting in anteroinferior orbit. ABSTRACT In August 1993, Tampa Bay, Florida was the scene of a devastating collision between a freighter and two barges. All three vessels came together in a moment of panic that left Tampa Bay looking like a war zone of burning and sinking wrecks. Parts of Tampa Bay were strewn with heavy fuel oil after the August 10 accident between the 345-foot Philippine-flagged freighter Balsa 37, which had been headed out of Tampa Bay, and two tug/barge units, Seafarer/Ocean 255 and Fred Bouchard B. No 155. This collision resulted in an explosion that burned out of control until the Tampa Fire Department extinguished it later that evening. Since the time of this collision, there have been major improvements made in firefighting response capabilities in the Tampa Bay area. The multi-level response community has been exercised extensively, including an exercise involving the evacuation of a cruise ship. Another exercise noted improvements to the response resources and capabilities in a field training exercise where the U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Office (MSO) Tampa, Tampa Fire Department, Tampa Port Authority, and Hvide Marine Towing deployed equipment to the scene of a simulated shipboard fire. The Tampa Port Authority supplied a 210-foot roll on-roll off (ro-ro) barge with a 78-foot beam capable of loading 73,230 pounds (32.1 long tons). The barge provided easy mobilization for the Tampa Fire Department to load four engine companies, a foam trailer, one Emergency Medical Service (EMS) vehicle, and all had sufficient room to work. Hvide Marine Towing provided a tug to deploy the ro-ro barge in a stern tow. This exercise demonstrated the joint cooperation and partnership between federal, state, city, and private industry to work together and improve the marine firefighting response posture in Tampa Bay. With every level of government under budget constraints, it is important to look for multi-purpose equipment and resources that will get the job done. Tampa Port Authority's ro-ro barge has presented itself as a unique firefighting resource that can be used as a platform to carry the fire engines from the city or county. The barge can reach any part of the port quickly and can handle a vessel or waterfront situation, thus improving the marine firefighting response posture in the port.

ABSTRACTSummoning the popularity and prestige of cinema, the Iraq Petroleum Company (IPC) invented the image of Baghdad for Iraqi audiences as the sight/site of oil modernity in the 1950s. In other words, oil urbanization, or the modernization of the city as shaped by the petroleum industry and its revenues, in Iraq cannot be understood apart from the representation of Baghdad as visible evidence of petroleum's promise to benefit the national population. The British-controlled oil company in Iraq produced a programme of at least two-dozen sponsored films and cine-magazine episodes between 1951 and 1958, which this essay examines as an emblematic case of neo-colonial film, constituting an archive of media practices that bridge the categories of colonial film on one hand, and industrial film on the other. After World War II, the Atlantic Charter reinforced the right to democratic self-rule as a global norm and the British state developed creative tactics to abet its continued control over strategic resources in its colonized territories. Oil above all became central to this story and, as this essay will show, British oil companies played a fundamental role towards reinventing the imperial project in the post-colonial context of Iraq. Through a contextualized analysis of the IPC films, I argue that the company public relations office utilized the conventional approaches and standard formats of colonial and industrial film – including montage, scripted voiceover and staged b-roll – to narrativize the association between neo-colonialist practices of oil extraction and national development as causal, inherent and positive.

This study elaborates on an ampulla found in Church B in Andriake harbor. Church B, one of the six churches in Andriake, was built in the early 5th century AD and was in use until the early 7th century. There is a depiction of Saint Menas in the gesture of orans on both sides of the ampulla, which was found in the church during the excavation between 2011-2013. Additionally, on both sides of Menas, there are camels bent over on his feet. The ampulla, thought to have been produced in the Saint Menas sanctuary, is dated to the early 7th century AD. Saint Menas is one of the military saints born to an Egyptian Christian family. After declaring that he was a Christian, he was executed and killed, and his lifeless body was tried to be burned in the fire. His body, saved from the fire by the believers of Menas, was taken to Egypt and buried in Abu Mina in the Mareotis Region. A large church dedicated to the saint was built in Abu Mina in the 4th century AD. After Abu Mina became a complex city, ampullae with depictions of Saint Menas were crafted there. These ampullae were taken to their destinations by those who came to the saint’s church to fulfill their sacred pilgrimage, by putting holy water and oil, which are believed to heal their inner world. The ampulla found in Andriake must have been brought to Andriake by someone from Myra who went to Abu Mina for a holy pilgrimage.

In the second half of 1980, 112 (or ca. 16%) of the inhabitants of the new settlement of São José, city of Manaus, contracted cutaneous leishmaniasis whilst clearing their properties of terra firme rainforest. With the aid of SUCAM, the authors carried out a pilot study to investigate the feasibility of reducing populations of Lutzomyia umbratilis, the local silvatic vector of Leishmania braziliensis guyanensis, by spraying insecticide on its favoured diurnal resting sites, the bases of the larger forest trees. Most manvector contact is at these resting sites and, therefore, it was encouraging to record a marked reduction of the tree-base populations of L. umbratilis for 21 days following just one application of D.D.T. emulsion in an area 200m square. Most of the treated trunks were not occupied by L. umbratilis for at least eleven months. Suggestions for extending the pilot study are made, and the need for collaboration with a clinical team is emphasized. Leishmania b. guyanensis is the aetiological agent of [quot ]pain bois[quot ], which is hyperendemic from French Guiana to central Amazônia. In the absence of proven vaccines or methods of vector control, some simple methods for limiting transmission of Le. b. guyanensis to man are listed.

Abstract In this essay, I treat intellectual property claims as “impossible realities,” as these have recently been defined by Susan Coutin and Barbara Yngvesson. Drawing from their joint legal ethnography of migration, deportation, and transnational adoption, I extend their observations about the routine mismatch between personal history, physical location, and legal description in order to understand the shifting value of design objects under various regimes of law and heritage. I trace how legal claims, aesthetic judgments, and historical understandings combine and conflict to create the contemporary value of furniture produced in the 1950s and 60s for the Indian modernist city of Chandigarh, and explore further shifts of value as the furniture circulates in a global market for what might be called “modernist antiquities,” and is potentially subject (in Europe) to copyright and trademark claims by the descendants of the designer Pierre Jeanneret. Further, a recent film by the artist Amie Siegel (American, b. 1974) explores the provenance and value of this furniture and provides a novel means of analyzing these shifts. Siegel has put her film up for sale at the same kind of auction where this furniture is sold, offering a reflexive critique of the paradoxes and (legal) impossibilities created by the relocation, restoration, and revaluation of this furniture. The history of the Chandigarh furniture and Siegel’s film together provide an avenue of commentary on the categories of IP, emerging subjects of regulation (like design copyrights), and the fraught relation of IP claims to both capitalist and postcolonial histories that make objects (and persons) bear different values in different locations.

During July 2012, a severe unusual disease symptom was observed on young shoots on apricot (Prunus armeniaca 10/13 hybrid) in the city of Pomáz, near Budapest. The naturally infected shoots showed typical symptoms of fire blight including terminal shoots with brown to black necrotic lesions. Symptoms were the same as fire blight symptoms reported from other hosts and locations. The first occurrence of fire blight on an apricot tree in Europe was recorded in Czech Republic in 2011. Samples of the leaves and shoots with symptoms were macerated and spread on King’s medium B. After 24 hours of incubation at 26 °C, bacteria morphologically similar to E. amylovora were detected. Isolate induced hypersensitive reaction on tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L. ‘White Burley’) leaves. Biochemical test was also used for identification, and the result of API 20E kit (Biomérieux, Marcy l’Etoile, France), demonstrate that the bacterium belongs to Enterobacteriaceae family. A pathogenicity tests were positive on young apricot shoots and immature fruits. For molecular identification of the pathogen the 16S rDNA region was amplified from isolate Ea-ApricotPo1 with a general bacterial primer pair (63f forward and 1389r reverse). The PCR products were cloned into a pGEM T-Easy plasmid vector (Promega, Madison, WI USA) and were transformed into Escherichia coli DH5α cells. A recombinant plasmid (2A2.5) was sequenced by M13 forward and reverse primers. The sequence was deposited in GenBank (Accession No. HF546214) and showed 99-100% sequence homology with a number of E. amylovora isolates, including type strain FN666575 with 100% similarity. On the basis of the symptoms, colony morphology, biochemical tests, and 16S rDNA sequence homology, the pathogen was identified as E. amylovora. This is a first record of a natural outbreak of fire blight on apricot in Hungary.

To increase productivity and achieve promised operating budget savings, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority of New York City wished to optimize bus maintenance routines throughout its different divisions. New York City Transit and the Manhattan and Bronx Surface Transit Operating Authority entered an agreement with the Local 100, Transport Workers Union of America of Greater New York, AFL-CIO to form a team of delegates, under the supervision of a mediating industrial engineer (IE), to create standard task times for 26 specified bus maintenance core procedures. Within 90 days, this process intended to ( a) create fixed standards for each task, and ( b) reduce times now spent on certain jobs. Throughout the process, labor and management were urged to articulate rationales and listen to explanations. Predictable arguments were initially cited, but these evolved into discussions of new approaches or considerations agreeable to both sides. In a disagreement, the IE tried to narrow differences and facilitate agreement on an intermediary value determined by timed demonstrations. The method invoked an iterative process of negotiation, converging upon the final agreement, which proved to be an interesting heuristic in general for similar mediation processes. This process of union and management coming together on issues of productivity is certainly not new and has been studied in the past. But, at a time when all transit budgets are under fire, issues such as saving jobs while reducing costs assume great importance.

Reforestation constitutes a challenge in post-fire ecosystem restoration, although there are limitations such as species and genotype selection, planting and management design, and environmental conditions. In the present study, the basic issue is the longevity of Abies cephalonica Loudon—the Greek fir seedlings planted extensively in Parnitha National Park (Central Greece), located near the metropolitan city of Athens, following the large-scale wildfire of 2007. Seedling performance was assessed for a 3-year monitoring period (2013–2015) through the establishment of 8 permanent transects, including 400 seedlings at the burned, reforested sites. According to the long-term reforestation project, two seedling provenances were used: (a) from Mt. Mainalon (South Greece, Vytina provenance) and (b) the local one from Mt. Parnitha. Both provenances showed a relatively successful survival rate reaching, in average, 73.8%, with the first summer after planting being crucial for seedling survival. The overall mean seedling height was 39.2 ± 1.1 cm, with a mean crown diameter of 47.3 ± 1.4 cm in the last monitoring survey. Although Parnitha seedlings seem to perform better in terms of growth, seedling performance in both provenances was affected by reforestation site characteristics, mainly altitude and aspect. Approximately one third of seedlings exhibited damage in their crown architecture (29.8%), while apical bud damage was less extensive (12.2%) in the final field measurement. Data indicate that seedling performance has proved to be quite promising for post-fire restoration, although long-term monitoring data should be considered.

This paper explores a recently emerged audiovisual form called desktop documentary, an interdisciplinary computer-based variant of the essay film. As a post-media practice, no longer exclusively dependent on the film medium, desktop filmmaking represents a hybrid audiovisual genre entirely conducted in the digital environment by using and exploiting preexisting materials in new contexts while using the advantages of the Internet, widely used software and digital tools. Desktop documentary filmmaking corresponds to the widespread artistic practice of postproduction – a concept introduced by Nicolas Bourriaud signifying a new state of affairs when all texts of culture are already available (mostly as digital objects) and the artist intervenes on existing materials rather than produces artworks ex nihilo. Belonging to the tradition of essay film – a cinematic documentary and experimental mode in which moving images and off-screen verbal voice or textual captions establish complex relations – desktop video essays introduce new post-media aesthetics. Similar to the idea of using everyday materials in the artistic context, initially proposed with Duchamp’s ready-mades, which unprecedentedly effaced every notion of the style from their avant-garde aesthetics, desktop documentaries often minimize and abolish cinematic stylistic qualities. One of the most significant aspects of desktop documentaries is that the act of film viewing does not differ from common computer user experience: having replaced traditional film screen with the computer interface, the interactive process of computational multitasking and navigation, performed on various digital data and files, becomes the very content of the film. After the historical overview of the phenomenon and general introduction into the post-media theory, selected works of representative desktop documentarists such as Kevin B. Lee and Louis Henderson are analyzed in their deconstructive approach to traditional and digital filmmaking – subversive both formally and politically. INTRODUCTION: By the nature of their activities, firefighters are exposed to a high risk of contracting hepatitis B virus (HBV) as most of the Fire Brigade occurrences in Campo Grande, State of Mato Grosso do Sul (MS), Brazil, are related to the rescue of victims of traffic accidents and the transportation of clinical and psychiatric emergencies. The aim of this study was to investigate the seroepidemiological profile of HBV infection in firefighters from the City of Campo Grande, central Brazil. METHODS: The research involved 308 firefighters. After giving written consent, they were interviewed and blood was collected for the detection of HBsAg, anti-HBs and total anti-HBc of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA). RESULTS: The participants had an average of 36.4 years of age (SD ± 6.5), being 89.9% male. Blood tests revealed 6.5% of seropositivity for hepatitis B (HB) infection (n=20), and 1% for HbsAg. Isolated anti-HBs markers, indicative of vaccine immunity, were found in 66.9% of the participants and 28.2% were susceptible to infection. With regard to risk factors for HB infection, multivariate regression analysis showed a statistically significant association with length of service; and prevalence was higher in individuals with over 20 years of service. CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of HB found among the firefighters was low and length of time in the profession was found to be a risk factor. Non-occupational risk factors did not influence the occurrence of HB infection in the population studied.
