ENTRENCHED PATRIARCHALISM AND HONOUR CRIMES: THE HISTORIES OF WOMEN WHO OVERCAME GENDER VIOLENCE AND BECAME ICONS TO HUMAN RIGHTS Violence against woman is still a terrible consequence present around the world. In several areas where entrenched patriarchalism is real, for example, in Pakistan, Sudan, Senegal, Iran, woman’s body is target to be violated in a constant way. It has been justified by means of social traditionalism. So, this text seeks to explain through women’s biographies who were victims of honor crimes (Pakistani Mukhtar Mai and Senegalese Kady Koita) the violence of gender and its overcoming. The aim is to think of abuses and oppression, which were experienced by these women from communities where the patriarchal essence is still imperative. This discussion lays on biographies, which were read in a hermeneutic In methodological terms, firstly, it is sought to present the meaning of patriarchalism. After this, some biographies will be showed and, finally, thought in the light of theories originated from areas such as gender, violence, cultural relativism and human rights.

Abstract This paper addresses the issue of animal biographies in French-language literature. While ethology, philosophy and history have only been recently interested in it, this issue has always fascinated writers, especially authors of naturalistic inspiration desirous of describing the lives of the animals they were observing, and « animalistic » writers fascinated by the animals whose lives they share or whose worlds they dwell in. I examine the works of Maurice Maeterlinck (1862-1949), Jacques Delamain (1874-1953), Louis Pergaud (1882-1915) and Maurice Genevoix (1890-1980), to highlight to what extent this literary corpus individualizes and personalizes animal existences, that is to s ay, represents their lived experiences. In the end, we come to understand how important the issue of personal biographies of animals is.

Reviews of Joan of Arc books often rightly begin by asking whether there is the need for yet another book on Joan of Arc. In the case of biographies, one is tempted to answer, no. The known facts have not changed over 600 years, and new angles from which her life can be approached do not emerge as often as do new biographies. Oddly, however, the kind of detailed comparative study of Joan’s afterlife in England through four centuries, which Gail Orgelfinger has accomplished in this vigorous new book, still needs to be done for French chronicles (no less) and much of her French afterlife.

Some academic libraries in Zaire were established and sustained during the colonial period, mainly by missionaries. Before Zaire was granted independence in 1960, three important academic institutions of higher education were known and had libraries. These were: Grand Seminaire de Majidi, Université Lovanium and Université Officielle du Congo. This school trained candidates for priesthood in the Catholic Church. In 1953, its library had 19,500 volumes for teachers and 4,500 for students reading philosophy and theology. Access to the teachers’ collection was restricted unless particular students had special permission to enter the library. (Tete Wersey 1983) mentioned that the library had a general catalogue on fiches with 4 clear sections: (a) Africa; (b) Sciences; (c) Biographies and (d) Africans’ Biographies.

Abstract This article approaches Qāḍī ʿIyāḍ b. Mūsā’s contribution to the stabilization of Mālikīsm in the Islamic West through his characterization of three important Andalusī figures of the school: Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr, Abū l-Walīd al-Bāǧī and Abū Bakr al-Ṭurṭūšī. ʿIyāḍ’s biographies of these scholars in two of his works, Tartīb al-madārik and al-Ġunya, are compared with those of Ibn Farḥūn (d. 799/1397) in his al-Dībāǧ al-mudhab. These biographical dictionaries, Tartīb and Dibāǧ, are the two main sources for the pre-modern history of Mālikīsm. The results of this comparison go beyond an analysis of Iyāḍ’s contribution to the stabilization of the Mālikī school in the Maghrib. The strong dependence of the Dībāǧ on the Tartīb reveals Ibn Farḥūn’s vision of his great Maghribī predecessor which in turn forms an interesting intra-history of Mālikīsm worth preserving. Using Ibn Farḥūn’s Dībāǧ as a point of comparison also helps us to observe how the circumstances projected by the Tartīb evolved over time and space thus contributing to a better understanding of the process of doctrinal stabilization and social normalization of the Mālikī madhab West but also East. After introducing ʿIyāḍ’s facet as a historian and a biographer in Section 1, I present his biographies of the three selected scholars. In Section 3, I discuss the main differences in the way ʿIyāḍ and Ibn Farḥūn approached each of their contributions to Mālikīsm to wrap up the significance of these differences in the conclusions.

This article analyses problems to deal with when writing biographies of prominent figures from armed forces. Starting with a statement that military sources are very specific and taking into account their relatively unified origin (all are created by the military) and topic (all issues related to armed forces) an essential division should be introduced at the very beginning. Military sources can be divided into (A) peaceful time sources and (B) conflict time sources (armed forces at their active stage during wars, preparations to war, riots, etc.). The article suggests some methods and sources for writing military biographies and also points out the necessity to include the motives guiding particular actions, i.e. why those people chose to act that way though other ways were, or seemed to be, open. The author also emphasises the necessity to employ methods from personality psychology.

Abstract The purpose of this study was to identify key predictors of centenarian survival in Oklahoma. Data originated from N = 607 centenarian biographies maintained within Oklahoma Centenarians, Inc. historical records database. Biographies were analyzed and coded for demographic content. IBM/SPSS 23.0 was then used to compute linear regression analyses to examine the association of predictor variables sex, race, education, cohort, and longevity secret relative to days of survival. Only race (std. B = .10, p < .05) and cohort (std. B = -.11, p < .01) emerged as significant predictors of overall survivorship. Non-white centenarians live longer than their White-Caucasian counterparts; whereas earlier-born cohorts have shorter survival. Closer examination of these findings revealed that non-White centenarians have historically lived an average of 300.38 days longer than their White counterparts; whereas later born cohorts have historically an average of 48.10 days shorter than earlier-born cohorts. Despite the fact that sex and subjective longevity secrets failed to yield any significance, further inspection revealed two interesting highlights. First, centenarian males have historically lived an average of 147.89 days less than female centenarians. Second, centenarians who cite God as the secrete to their longevity have historically lived 100.23 fewer days than centenarians who attribute their longevity to something else. Results have implications to further understanding the interplay of race and human longevity, as well as variables attributed to improved survivorship across successive cohorts. Further discussion relative to health practices and policies to improve longevity in states like Oklahoma will be further highlighted.

The purpose of this study is to identify the pieces of biographical information that are most relevant for the study of Russian as a heritage language. It builds on a review of questionnaires for studying linguistic biographies that are currently used in articles and methodological materials by different researchers. We perform a critical analysis and comparison of these questionnaires, which aims at a more systematic and condensed approach to the gathering of relevant sociolinguistic data. This comparison showed that the most relevant types of biographical information are the following: (a) general biographical information, including data on the acquisition and proficiency in the languages of the participants, (b) information on language use in different communicative domains by the informant, (c) data on the attitudes of the informant towards the heritage language, and the language of the country of residence, (d) data on the informant's selfassessment of proficiency in the heritage language in general and mastery of basic skills. The research results can be useful not only for studying heritage languages, but also with a little refinement to studies on second and third language acquisition.

Need to be further studied: biographies of teachers as organizers of the educational process at the institute; biographies of the students of the institute (in terms of implementing the results of studies at the institute). The purpose of the article is to clarify the upper chronological boundary of the institution, the periodization of the organization of the educational process in it, the place of establishment in the local and regional educational network of the time and biographical information of the participants in the educational process. The new and well-known materials about the activity of the Poltava Teachers' Institute during the years 1914-1919 have been analyzed and studied from another angle. In particular, attention is focused on the recently discovered photo with the signatures of the surnames of classmates A. S. The relevance of the article lies in the fact that the scientific relations of the scientists, the commonality of their interests, support, and help are revealed through the letters of Kalenyk Sheykovsky to Borys Grinchenko. That is a separate episode in their biographies, which characterizes both of them as extremely thorough lexicographers, talented linguists, and connoisseurs of the Ukrainian language. The subject of the study is K. Sheykovsky’s epistolary and B. Grinchenko’s review of the “Opyt yuzhnorusskogo slovarya”, which are intended as sources for biographies of scientists. The goal is the reconstruction of interpersonal scientific relationships, the peculiarities of cooperation between researchers using the comparative-historical method, source-research techniques and tools that made it possible to recreate a particular period in the biographies of scientists. As a result of the research, it turned out that the scientists exchanged individual fixed lexemes. K. Sheykovsky sent the published issue of “Opyt yuzhnorusskogo slovarya” to B. Grinchenko in 1888, to which he responded with a favorable review on the pages of the Lviv magazine “Zorya”. On the basis of ego-documents, it can be stated that K. Sheykovsky published the dictionary at his own expense, while B. Grinchenko helped him with advice. The scientists exchanged their own works, and K. Sheykovsky also sent 18 riddles with variants to his addressee. The letters contain information about the exact number of lexemes for individual letters in the dictionary. The epistolary narrative is saturated with details of life, which create a unique picture of the world not only of both scholars, of the scholars’ life at that time, but also of the publishing business, the life of people of science, and the attitude towards Ukrainianness in the empire. K. Sheykovsky’s letters are evidence of the material difficulties of the person actually exiled to the town of Menzelinsk, Ufa province, dangerous to the empire connoisseur of the Ukrainian language, who worked in conditions of isolation and persecution. K. Sheykovsky worked on “Opyt…” for more than 30 years. Censorship and his status as a dangerous Ukrainophile prevented the scholar from publishing it in its entirety. However, even the two volumes (in three editions) that were published were a significant contribution to linguistics and folkloristics and changed the understanding of the lexical composition of the Ukrainian language.

AbstractWhen writing biographies of historical figures, narrative convention requires that concision and clarity be wrested from sources that are multiple and often confusing. In this article, I argue that multiple accounts of a person's life may be more than an accident arising from the way that information was compiled. Rather, such multiplicity renders exemplary figures adaptable to a wide variety of circumstances, making them even more useful as a focus of devotion and emulation. Examining multiple accounts of early Maliki scholar Sahnun b. Saʿ id (d. 854), including those of his travels in search of knowledge and of his suffering under the miḥna (trial) in Kairouan, I find that close attention to apparently contradictory evidence may not get us any closer to understanding the man himself, but it does offer us much information about the ways in which he was considered an exemplary individual.

The correspondence of M. I. Tsvetaeva and B. L. Pasternak, which has a vivid literary character, is one of the unique documents of the history of Russian literature of the 1920s–1930s. Since its full publication in 2004, it has repeatedly become the subject of multiple scientific research projects: interpretations of texts and their fragments were proposed, and biographies of poets were built through the correspondence. However, the poetics of the entire corpora of their letters as a whole was not considered in detail. The final paper offers an analysis of the content and poetics of the poets' letters to each other, as well as traces and illustrates the peculiar myth that develops in their correspondence, which we designate as a “novel in letters”. Further, it is considered how the main themes and motives of correspondence were reflected in the work of both correspondents on the basis of the key motives of this “novel”.

Knowledge communication in cultural heritage and digital humanities currently faces two challenges, which this paper addresses: On the one hand, data-driven storytelling in these fields has mainly focused on human protagonists, while other essential entities (such as artworks and artifacts, institutions, or places) have been neglected. On the other hand, storytelling tools rarely support the larger chains of data practices, which are required to generate and shape the data and visualizations needed for such stories. This paper introduces the InTaVia platform, which has been developed to bridge these gaps. It supports the practices of data retrieval, creation, curation, analysis, and communication with coherent visualization support for multiple types of entities. We illustrate the added value of this open platform for storytelling with four case studies, focusing on (a) the life of Albrecht Dürer (person biography), (b) the Saliera salt cellar by Benvenuto Cellini (object biography), (c) the artist community of Lake Tuusula (group biography), and (d) the history of the Hofburg building complex in Vienna (place biography). Different types of international literary contacts in Ukrainian literature studying are analyzed in the article. Special attention is paid to research of different nations relations (Ukrainian-Polish) on the material of historical subjects texts. First of all, the article analyses the works of the representatives of the “Ukrainian school” in Polish literature (S. Goszczynski, B. Zaleski, J. Slowacki, Z. Fisz). Also, the comparative approach makes it possible to establish the general regularities of the formation of romanticism as a method and direction in world literature (for example, in the various genre works of J. Byron, V. Hugo, J. Słowacki, B. Zaleski, K. Ryleev, T. Bulgarin, B. Lepkyi, etc. the means of romantic poetics are excavated: the cult of a strong personality, for which the struggle for freedom, both personal and of one’s nation, is important, striving for an ideal when creating a personosphere, unusual passions of heroes, mysterious, illicit love and punishment for it, significant aesthetic load of descriptions of nature, connection of the latter with human life. Considerable attention is paid to the life and creative pages of the biographies of Taras Shevchenko and Ivan Franko (in particular, the Polish-Lithuanian and, accordingly, Polish-Austrian component in their life work), which provide a wide scope for studying intercultural contacts, as well as the Polish component in the biographies of I. Nechui-Levytskyi and P. Hulak-Artemovskyi. The article examines various fictional versions (Polish and Ukrainian) of well-known historical events and figures (Khmelnytskyi region, Koliivshchyna, Hetman Mazepa, Sultanka Roksolana). A lot of space is given to the translation heritage, which contains an important potential for the realisation of intercultural contacts. The role of the regional factor (i.e., literary local history), which should be taken into account when teaching literature, is emphasised. The comparison of the similar and different in two phenomena of different national literatures improves the understanding of each of them as a unique and original phenomenon of art and at the same time an integral part of the world literary process. The international context should be especially emphasized when teaching the course to foreign students or students of the faculty of foreign languages.

The identities of four eminent nineteenth-century naturalists together in an old photograph on display at the University Marine Biological Station at Millport are revealed as Professor R. A. von Kölliker, Dr W. B. Carpenter FRS, Professor W. Sharpey FRS and Professor J. H. Balfour FRS. Brief biographies are provided. It is suggested that the photograph dates from the British Association for the Advancement of Science's meeting in Glasgow in September 1855. The venue seems likely to have been Carpenter's rented “cottage” on Holy Island, which provided a base for marine biological investigations in the adjacent Lamlash Bay, Arran. The historical significance of this notable early photograph resides in the evidence it confers regarding the relationships between these world-class scientific figures.

Systems thinking has been developed and used in many fields such as management, economics, and engineering in the past few decades. Although implicit elements of systems thinking may be found in some coaching biographies and autobiographies, a critical and explicit work on systems thinking that examines its principles and its relevance to sport sciences and coaching is yet to be developed. The aim of this Insight paper is to explore systems thinking and its potential for modelling and analysing team performance by (a) explaining how systems thinking is used in other fields, (b) highlighting the importance of conceptual analysis and critical thinking next to data collecting practices, and (c) contrasting systems thinking with the common approaches to modelling and analysing team performance.

Abstract This study analyzes selected Persian ghazals attributed to Najm al-Dīn Masʿūd Sāvajī (d. ca. 1493), who, at the behest of Āq Quyūnlū Sultan Yaʿqūb b. Ūzūn Ḥasan (r. 1478–90), held paramount administrative positions in the White Sheep confederate empire. The analysis departs from existing scholarship on premodern Persian ghazal—the tendency of which is to regard the poetic form as nonreflective of its author and its times—and considers these ghazals as sources of historical information. The study thus determines the extent to which the selected lyrics of Najm al-Dīn affirm information about Āq Quyūnlū royal personalities and state policies contained in the traditional sources, like official chronicles, literary biographies, and personal correspondences. In the process, the article introduces an influential, though hitherto overlooked, Āq Quyūnlū bureaucrat who exemplifies a category of versifier largely neglected by modern specialists of Persian classical poetry: the statesmen-cum-poet dilettante.

Micro-enterprises and self-employed individuals have been hit particularly hard by the economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, but few studies have tackled the issue. This paper is based on four in-depth case studies of self-employed people from different sectors who have been greatly affected by measures taken to control the pandemic. By capturing shifts in the perception of institutional and economic pressures, as well as precarity after the outbreak of COVID-19, we gained profound insight into crisis management among entrepreneurs working in niche or marginalized fields of business. We found parallels in their biographies and attitudes, but their perceptions of the COVID-19 pandemic differ. We observed paradoxes and hybrid logic, as well as different ways of coping with the crisis. Having a “plan B” helped in some cases, while all of them benefitted from the solidarity of networks and communities.

The relevance of research. In 2007, the industrial city of Essen, Germany, and the accompanying "ring" of mining towns in the Ruhr Valley, quite unexpectedly became the European Capital of Culture. Essen did not lose in a number of such senior cities as Athens and Florence, world centers like Paris, Amsterdam, Brussels. On the contrary, the project of an industrial city has generated creative interest. The aim of the project was to solve such problems of industrial cities as the ecology of an industrial city, monuments of factory culture. The core of the project was mining biographies and the memory of the profession. The article provides links to similar transformations of the "Soviet Magnitka" - Uralmash in Yekaterinburg and other industrial cities of Russia. The “case of Samara” is considered in most 62 Гуманитарные науки Humanitarian Sciences ________________________________________________________________________________________________ detail. The author's hypothesis is that there is a rift in Samara between the "old" and "industrial city". This is confirmed by the analysis of chronotopes of different parts of the city and the proposed hypothesis of urban archetypes. Research methodology. The article uses the analysis of biographies and the go-along method. The author's concept of the chronotopic fault of the city became the substantive basis of this article. The cultural projects that the industrial "Bezymyanka" gave birth to give a high assessment of their projectivity, which has outstripped its time. Among the "nameless cultural projects" there is a unique mathematical and aesthetic school, a competition for young musicians named after D. B. Kabalevsky, the Valery Grushin International Festival is the world's largest festival of art songs. The city needed creative projects and it deserves study and further development. Conclusion: the problem of different cultural territories within one city inevitably leads to the division of territories and the inhibition of the creative development of the city as a whole.

The study serves as an introduction to the publication of B. Baradin’s (1878-1937) theses for the lecture by A. Dorzhiev (1853-1938), which was to be read at the international Buddhist exhibition planned in Leningrad in 1927. The author dwells in detail on the biographies of the Buryat academic scientist B. Baradin, as well as his Buddhist mentor Geshe A. Dorzhiev, at whose request he compiled theses. Turning to the history of the first Buddhist exhibition, which took place during the Civil War in 1919, the author notes the contribution of academic scientists S.F. Oldenburg, B.Ya. Vladimirtsov, F.I. Shcherbatsky and O.O. Rosenberg. The role of Shcherbatsky, who sought to present Buddhism as a completely unique religion, consonant with modern science and not based on blind faith, is particularly emphasized. This was supposed to put Buddhism in a favorable light before the Bolsheviks and the Soviet government and prevent persecution against it. Shcherbatsky’s contribution to the ideology of the Buddhist renewal movement, whose leaders sought to cooperate with the atheistic authorities, was noted. The historical circumstances in which the second, already international, exhibition was being prepared and the reasons why it could not take place are discussed. Focusing on the content of Baradin’s theses, the author emphasizes that the main thing in them was the proximity of Buddhism to the ideology of the West and modern science. In conclusion, the author notes that the theme of the convergence of Buddhism and science has anticipated modern Western scientific research on Buddhist meditation practices, as well as discussions between Western scientists and the Dalai Lama about the benefits of Buddhist psychopractics for the modern world.

The list of books published in Italian, which Adam Smith purchased for his library and we assume he also read, since he quoted some, represent the Appendix of the present work. From his Italian library, 60 volumes were identified, published between 1547 (B. Castiglione, Il Cortegiano) and 1784 (32 volumes from Parnaso Italiano ovvero Raccolto de’ Poeti Classici Italiani). Just a few years before his death, the great admiror of Italian literature, assiduous reader of Italian poetry, drama, memoirs, correspondence, biographies, jurisprudence, economics, art and history (especially that of Venice and Florence) was still purchasing and reading books from the Italian states, a fact which sketches a personality with a profound cultural and humanities features.

In the works of Ludwig Bauer, a significant place is given to the autobiographical memory of the past, strongly connected with the discourse of identity, lost childhood, collective amnesia; it is related to body memory, place memory, and in the characters’ biographies there is usually present (overt or covert) Plato’s eikon (seen as a trace imprinted on the psyche and the mind), whose finding and explaining stimulates the plot and the story. Community memory is stored (A. Assmann) in the individual memory of its members. The aim of the proposed topic is to explore — with the use of interdisciplinary, methodological achievements in the field of memory discourse — the hermeneut-ics of L. Bauer’s selected works. As a result, the disquisition provides an analysis of literature in the process of forming memory and identity in the area of the former Yugoslavia, as well as literature as a medium of memory and “distinctive symbol system” (B. The present study examines: a) the relationship between religious orientations and interest in the ancestral past; and b) the discursive practices of genealogists in dealing with time and death. Genealogy refers to the construction of family pedigrees in terms of births, marriages, and deaths, embellished with stories about the historic family and individual ancestors. Analyses are based on quantitative and qualitative data taken from personal interviews and surveys conducted in Canada (in 1994 and 1998) and Australia (in 1999). Multivariate analyses of national data failed to find effects for religiosity on passive or active interest in genealogy, but found significant negative effects for belief in an afterlife on both measures. Qualitative analyses of genealogists' accounts of their experiences in the pastime revealed symbolic and largely secular strategies designed to extend the time frame of their lives beyond their personal biographies, and to address the twin challenges posed by aging and death on the part of close family members and themselves.

This study examines the impact of a coach education program on coach learning and perceived changes to coaching practices, while situating this episodic learning experience within a lifelong-learning perspective. Three sets of in-depth interviews were conducted with 10 coaches taking part in one of three competition-development modules within Canada’s National Coaching Certification Program (Coaching and Leading Effectively, Managing Conflict, and Psychology of Performance). It was found that (a) the coaches’ biographies varied widely, (b) all of the coaches reported learning from the modules, (c) eight of ten coaches reported a change in their coaching practices as a result of participation in one of the modules, and (d) the coaches credited a combination of mediated, unmediated, and internal learning situations for their learning before and after the modules. These findings suggest that a large-scale coach education program can have an impact on coaches when the program takes a lifelong-learning perspective and integrates constructivist principles into its design and delivery.

Only scarce information is available on doctorate recipients’ career outcomes ( BuWiN, 2013 ). With the current information base, graduate students cannot make an informed decision on whether to start a doctorate or not ( Benderly, 2018 ; Blank et al., 2017 ). However, administrative labor market data, which could provide the necessary information, are incomplete in this respect. In this paper, we describe the record linkage of two data sets to close this information gap: data on doctorate recipients collected in the catalog of the German National Library (DNB), and the German labor market biographies (IEB) from the German Institute of Employment Research. We use a machine learning-based methodology, which (a) improves the record linkage of data sets without unique identifiers, and (b) evaluates the quality of the record linkage. The machine learning algorithms are trained on a synthetic training and evaluation data set. In an exemplary analysis, we compare the evolution of the employment status of female and male doctorate recipients in Germany.

Abstract The analysis of several extant manuscripts of the Šāhnāma epics and other Persian literary texts produced by two calligraphers, Ādīna Kātib Buḫārī (fl. 1595-1605) and Mīr Māh b. Mīr ʿArab (fl. 1592-1613), seemingly in the same atelier in Samarkand, opens up an interesting field of investigation. The latter copyist was a close relation of a renowned court calligrapher and Chief Librarian of the Shaybanid rulers of Bukhara, Mīr Ḥusayn “Kulangī” (fl. ca. 1535-85) who himself also specialized in the copy of Persian classical literature; more then 30 manuscripts by his hand are extant today. This article presents the available information on professional biographies of these calligraphers (introducing some hithertho unknown manuscripts), but also it touches upon the issues of the actual organization and practices of skill transmission and book production, some aspects of professional specialization, and the importance of transmission reference figure in professional and family contexts of the late sixteenth- and early seventeenth-century Central Asia.

The article is devoted to the consideration of such a historical event as “maneuvers” conducted under the guidance of A. V. Suvorov in Kremenchug in 1787. The reliability of the facts related to the presentation of this event in biographical studies dedicated to the great commander is analyzed. A description of the maneuvers in Kremenchug, followed by a conversation between Suvorov and the empress, took shape in the 19th century, in the works of E. B. Fuchs, F. Smith, N. A. Polevoy, A. F. Petrushevsky. This story is present in the biographies of the commander created in the XX century. The reconstruction of this event is carried out on the basis of a historical anecdote outlined in the works of E. B. Fuchs and references to maneuvers in Kremenchug in the memoirs of the French diplomat L. Segur. However, an analysis of other sources makes it possible to question this story. No source mentions the maneuvers in Kremenchug, describing the events as a show or a parade. The troops located in Kremenchug were not subordinate to A. V. Suvorov, and Yu. V. Dolgorukova. The conversation between Suvorov and the Empress after the maneuvers, also does not find confirmation in the sources.

Jakub Susza’s intellectual development, his education in Jesuit colleges in Braniewo, Pultusk and Olomouc, and the characteristic features of his works (the consistent use of Polish and Latin as literary languages, the use of western Latin and Polish literary models) contribute to his image as an example of latinisation and occidentalisation (which at that time meant polonisation) of higher Uniate clergy in the Commonwealth, though as a bishop he took care to preserve the religious identity of the Eastern church.

Each term lasted about three months and provided the first long-term preparation program for singing-school masters, church choir directors, private instructors, and school music teachers in the United States. Students at the institute studied pedagogy, voice culture, music theory, and choral literature and had the opportunity to take private lessons with prominent musicians and teachers. The Normal Musical Institute relocated to North Reading, Massachusetts, in 1856 and, in 1860, began meeting in various cities throughout the country. In 1872, the school became the National Normal Musical Institute and continued under this name until its final season in Elmira, New York, in 1885. This study was designed to examine the history of this institution in relation to its origin, details of operation, pedagogy and curriculum, prominent students and faculty, and influence on music education. ABSTRACTBased on research with members of two Senior Citizens Forums in the South East of England, this article examines the biographies and motivations of those who get involved in such activities, with particular emphasis on (a) how they see themselves in relation to ‘other older people’ and (b) their relationships with the places in which they live. We address these issues in relation to the characterisation of participants in such forums as the ‘usual suspects’ whose legitimacy to speak on behalf of others may be questioned, and by reference to a growing recognition of the significance of place in the lives of older people. Whilst the locations of the two Forums studied are geographically close, culturally they are quite distinct and we identify important differences in motivations, backgrounds and priorities of forum members in the two places that are associated with these differences. Our research confirms that place-based participation tends to engage those who are fitter and who have more social and cultural capital, but questions assumptions that this means they are spaces for the pursuit of self-interest.

Introduction. Research on Buryat and Kalmyk pilgrimage to Buddhist worshiping sites in Tibet and wider in Inner Asia at the late imperial period mostly focuses on biographies and travel writings of Buddhist clergy, while experience of ordinary pilgrims ― especially of the lay people (Mong. khara khün) who were actors of this social phenomena ― received limited attention. However, some of the Buryat ‘oral histories’ about long distance travels to Tibet were recorded later by Buryat intellectuals (e. g., B. B. Baradiin) to name but a few. Goals. The article aims to introduce one such record made in 1968 by a rural community school teacher and amateur historian B. B. Namsaraev. Results. The latter wrote down a life story (Mong. namtar) of Bato Badmaev, an elder from the village of Suduntui, about his pilgrimage to Tibet between 1901 and 1904. This travelogue by a lay person presents unique first-hand observations about hardships of the long distance foot pilgrimage to worshiping places in Urga, Amdo and Tibet ― a wide social phenomenon among Buryats at the beginning of the 20th century. This ‘oral history’ together with extensive information about infrastructure along the pilgrim routes (Mongolian and Tibetan families hosting pilgrims and providing meals to them, travel tips they shared of how to pass the most dangerous hostile deserts and mountain passes, encountering a yeti snowman (Mong. almaz), etc.) contain emotional remarks about things experienced and bodily hardships pilgrims faced (thirst, physical exhaustion, extreme temperatures, and so on) ― aspects which are not covered in travelogues of Buddhist clergy and professional explorers (e. g., merchants, military specialists) who were in much more privileged travel conditions hiring horses and camels to carry their goods and belongings. Therefore, the recent publication (2012) of this unique travelogue made it more accessible and available to a wider audience.

The research subject is the interpretation of the role of Boris Godunov in the same-name opera by M.P. Mussorgsky by the two Bulgarian opera stars B. Christoff and N. Ghiaurov, and their approach to the work on this role. The author’s goal is to reveal the main semantic emphases of the interpretation of the leading role of “Boris Godunov”, and to reach this goal, the author analyzes the reviews and essays of opera critics, the biographies of the singers, as well as the memoirs of their contemporaries and the interviews with the singers. The topicality of the research consists in the necessity to study the global performance heritage of the opera stage that would serve as a basis of the new worthwhile interpretations. The author concludes that Christoff puts emphasis on lofty and exalted aspirations of the tsar who, being a dreamer and a knight, was trying to praise and strengthen his state, but fell victim to boyar opposition and the inexorable course of Russia’s history. In his turn, Ghiaurov doesn’t condone Godunov, however, forming an image of an inspiring awe and admiration tsar - monumental, powerful and proud. While Christoff, subsequent to Mussorgsky, saw Tsar Boris as a person dashed by power, Ghiaurov, like Pushkin, was closer to the image of a tsar who had subdued all human traits in himself for the sake of his primary goal - power.

Rizaeddin Fakhretdinov (18591936) is one of the most prominent figures among Muslim scholars at the turn of the 1920th cc. whose sphere of scientific interests was biographies. Among the materials of R. Fakhretdinov on the preparation of his famous work Asar there are texts related to Sufism, and of particular interest are descriptions of the miracles performed by Muslim righteous men. One of the documents about the miraculous deeds of a righteous man named Abd al-Latif b. Subhankul b. Ramkul under the title (Fī bayān manāqib al-'imām al-shaiḫ al-kāmil) Explanation of the virtues of al-Imam al-Sheikh al-Kamil (the Imam, the Sheikh who should be followed) is stored in the Institute of Oriental Manuscripts in the archive of R. Fakhretdinov (Fund 131, Inventory 1). The stories in many ways resemble or even coincide with similar Sufi texts from other Muslim countries. This is a sign of cultural and ideological interaction between brotherhoods, as well as transmission of the perfect image of Sufi righteous men. In addition, miracles and their number enhanced the importance of a sheikh mentor in the eyes of his followers and made his authority undeniable. It is worth mentioning that the text is written in a good Arabic literary language, which testifies to a high education level of the author. The present article contains a short biography of Rizaeddin Fakhretdinov, facsimile publication of the text and its translation into English.

It is well studied that some Pythagorean principles lied at the foundations of the Late Antique Neoplatonic School. The main reason for that conclusion to be drawn is the two biographies of the Samian sage written by the Neoplatonic philosophers Porphyry of Tyre and Iamblichus of Chalcis. Accordingly, the archetypical image of Pythagoras became a major ideal for which every pagan philosopher aimed in Late Antiquity. Henceforth, masters and their disciple circles comprised a micro-society which can reasonably be analyzed as a whole. Suffice it to say that they were small and cohesive charismatic communities whose isolation from the outside world aroused a living harmony from which emerged long-standing emotional bonds. Consequently, the Pythagorically rooted κοινός βίος (Iambl. Vit. Pyth. 6.29: τὸ λεγόμενον κοινοβίους) can easily be ascertained in the biographical literature around the philosophical schools from Plotinus to Damascius (cf. Porph. Vit. Plot. 18.6-14; Procl. In Resp. passim). It is a way of life in common which was also known at the old Athenian Academy (according to Plato’s only explicit reference to Pythagoras (Resp. 600a-b: Πυθαγόρειον τρόπον τοῦ βίου) and has sometimes been defined even as “coenobitic”, in analogy with other contemporary phenomena. But from our point of view, it can be better understood through an analysis of the concept of συνουσία—that is, the meetings of philosophers with their companions (ἑταῖροι) in a specific place which turned into a sort of spiritual household. With this contribution, we aim at focusing on the redefinition of the Neoplatonic συνουσίαι as a legacy of the Platonic notion of συνουσία, stemming from Pythagorean κοινόβιοι. To sum up, we will revise this issue and the state of the art, with the redefinition of Late Antique συνουσία as a terminus technicus in the biographic literature around the Neoplatonic Schools, aiming at opening new paths for the understanding of the Pythagorean–Platonic heritage in Late Antiquity.

The relevance of studying biographies of the representatives of the revolutionary generation stems from public interest in the fate of the makers of the era of change, as well as from heuristic potential of the “history of generations” approach in historical science. Drawing on archival fonds containing personal data of the Tambov communists born in the 1890s, the biography of the "revolutionary turning point" generation has been studied. Prosopographic study permits to establish their origin, social status, activities, and life strategy. It uses autobiographies, personal data cards, materials of the party census of communists registered with the Tambov Provincial Committee of the RCP (B) in 1918–22. Most sources are being introduced into scientific use for the first time. The object of the study is biographies of five communists. Our “protagonists” occupied various positions in the punitive and repressive bodies of the Soviet government system and took an active part in the suppression of the peasant uprising of 1920–21 in the Tambov gubernia. The research is to identify factors of social mobility and determine forms of “revolutionary” career of the young party members. It is interesting to study the society’s means of survival during systemic crisis and operation of “social lift” mechanism during social upheavals. The research methodology is based on “history of generations” approach and interdisciplinary nature of the work. Historical-comparative, historical-genetic, retrospective, systemic methods, and method of cohort analysis have been used. The novelty lies in recreation of life paths of the representatives of the studied group through the prism of most important events of the era of wars and revolutions. It has been established that career advancement was facilitated by education (as a rule, town or uezd school), military experience (in the Red Guard and special forces), and mandatory membership in the Communist Party. Four of the five protagonists were not native to the uezd, the arrived from the capital as appointees to strengthen the activities of the local authorities. As a result, a typical biography of the representatives of the studied generation, young communists of the Russian periphery during the Civil War has been reproduced.

Micheál mac Liammóir (1898-1978) and Edward Gordon Craig (1872-1966) shared many similarities: both were actors, designers, directors, and writers, and both rejected the realist tradition dominant in the theatre of their times. Craig’s developments in design throughout Europe laid a path for mac Liammóir to follow; indeed, mac Liammóir begins his autobiography All for Hecuba (1946) with the claim, ‘I would become [...] a Gordon Craig’. However, their affinities were not only in design and other aspects of theatre practice but in their shared artistic beliefs and performances of identity. This article will examine what mac Liammóir might have meant by ‘becoming a Gordon Craig’, first by considering Craig’s reputation and comparing both artists’ biographies. By contextualising Craig’s collaboration with W. B. Yeats at the Abbey Theatre, and Yeats’ influence on mac Liammóir, the article seeks to define the shared beliefs of mac Liammóir and Craig. Finally, by placing mac Liammóir’s reinvention and performance of self within a wider modernist context, an argument will be made for considering mac Liammóir in light of Craig’s concept of ‘The Über-Marionette’. Metal has been widely argued as playing a decisive role in the development of Mycenae, which became one of the foremost centers on the Late Bronze Age Greek mainland. Yet, little is understood as to how metals were integrated into the lives of the inhabitants. Most scholarship has concentrated on the relationship between the ruling class and metal artifacts, drawing much of the evidence from the Linear B archives and top-down models of trade, society and internal redistribution that are increasingly considered untenable within the study of other aspects of Mycenaean life. This paper presents a new project, which uses a practice-orientated approach based around object biographies to study the use of metal across the entire social spectrum of the Late Bronze Age community at Mycenae (approximately 1700–1050 BC). The benefits of such an approach are discussed through a case study that examines the unexpected absence of gold vessels from the Palatial period archaeological record from the perspective of social practice and demonstrates how the holistic use of evidence from multiple sources can help overcome the difficulties inherent in the study of the use of metal in past societies.

Abstract After arrival, refugees face the challenge of reordering their biographies in new social contexts that are framed by certain life course policies, institutionalised bureaucratic processes and norms. How do processes of adherence to and adaptation of familiar routines and orientations take shape among refugee women with care responsibilities in Germany? Following on from existing literature on life course, refugee and biographical research, this article enriches current research by adding a gender-sensitive analysis of the labour market trajectories of refugee mothers in Germany. Based on biographically oriented interviews with 22 women with children who fled to Germany from predominantly Arab countries between 2015 and 2020, two findings are presented and discussed: a) different phases of arrival framed by different life course policies and norms unfold in various bureaucratic settings, and b) three different labour market orientations and strategies depending on the women’s biographical orientations, their renegotiation in unfamiliar environments and the life stage the women currently find themselves in. The results provide new insights into the biographical trajectories of refugee women’s labour market participation and challenge a predominantly static view of this group as homogeneous in terms of qualifications, care responsibilities and employment aspirations.

This study shows how Varanasi, a site that many people understand to be a sacred Hindu city, has been made “Jain” through its association with the lives of four of the twenty-four enlightened founders of Jainism, the jinas or tīrthaṅkaras. It provides an overview of the Jain sites of worship in Varanasi, focusing especially on how events in the life of the twenty-third tīrthaṅkara Pārśva were placed in the city from the early modern period to the present day in order to bring Jain wealth and resources to the city. It examines the temple-building programs of two Śvetāmbara renunciants in particular: the temple-dwelling Kuśalacandrasūri of the Kharataragaccha (initiated in 1778), and the itinerant Ācārya Rājayaśasūri of the Tapāgaccha (b. 1945). While scholars and practitioners often make a strong distinction between the temple-dwelling monks (yatis) who led the Śvetāmbara community in the early modern period and the peripatetic monks (munis) who emerged after reforms in the late nineteenth-century—casting the former as clerics and the latter as true renunciants—ultimately, the lifestyles of Kuśalacandrasūri and Rājayaśasūri appear to be quite similar. Both these men have drawn upon the wealth of Jain merchants and texts—the biographies of Pārśva—to establish their lineage’s presence in Varanasi through massive temple-building projects.
