Texto completo da fonteThe periode of time targeted here stretches from 1900 to 1949; taking into account historical factors, refering to earlier so-called "works for the young" and probing into various writings from that particular period, enable to locate the bases of a children's literature in its own right. From the study of novels for children by Erich Kastner, a German writer, the purpose is to derive the deciding factors that helped establish a literature specific to children (writings for teenagers have been left out of this study). Along with the very special interest granted to the various aspects of the works of a writer of German extraction, in a historical context rich in events, the worldwide scope of this literature shows itself as a criterium of the utmost importance in modern trends. The acknowledgement of children's literature as such is a contemporary more as it is intended for an ever renewed public, the child

Texto completo da fonteColette very often proved to be critical facing her first writings, which however signed her entrance in litterature. It seems therefore evidence based to wonder how youth work has influenced Colette’s writings, and how her first texts have deeply influenced the structure of her stories, making difficult the classification of these texts. At first, the resumption of forename « Claudine » in La Maison de Claudine suggests a reminiscence of youth work, since the writer put away, and also takes back and develops several themes of Claudine, as if she wanted to reintegrate to her project the cycle which marked her beginning in litterature. The link between her first novels and the rest of her works exceeds this reference. So we could wonder why the creation of Claudine is the condition of all her following writings, autobiographic at first, but also fictional, because her texts seems to be built on uninterrupted dialogue between an unavoidable debt towards Willy, and the necessity to surpass a fruitless model. Finally, this dialogue allows to receive, throughout Colette’s work, a series of tensions and paradoxes, which feeds the appraising of the artistic plan of the author, who offers a plural writing, smoothing the generic categories to the advantage of the voice which carries the story, making of the building of writer’s representation the major artistic stake of Colette’s work

Texto completo da fonteThough omnipresent in youth publication or for the general public, novelization is not very visible in the French literary field, probably because it is closely associated to its most mercantile editorial production. Hence a shortage of critical studies about it. Only two researchers, Monnique Carcaud-Macaire and Jan Baetens, are studying these texts, defined a minima as a type of adaptation of a screenplay and/or audiovisual one to fictitious texts. We can observe that the way they chose to spell it : « novellisation » is accepted as an authority in the critics (as rare as they can be). If they globally designate the genre as such, they deal above all with published novels in a marginal way-the writing and publishing contexts of which-is asking for us the question of their belonging to the genre. This means leaving aside a consequent part of the actual production, as every actor in the process of these texts production(author, publishers, producers, etc.)speak of «novelisation ». We shall therefore map out the state of contemporary French novelisation regardless of pre-established literary criteria, meaning, without breaking the continuum of literature called industrial to the Literature. Based on specific examples and the testimonies of the professionals we have met, our analysis on the procedures ofconception , writing and the diffusion of different corpus will enable us to clarify the generic specificities of novelization. Hybrid, intermedial in essence, the genre is emblematic of a cultural era where the works constantly flow to and fro different media

Texto completo da fontePost-World War II France experienced a period of outstanding economic growth known as the “Thirty Glorious Years”, which ended with the 1973 oil crisis. Publishing benefitted greatly from the rise of the consumer society in this period of prosperity, and scores of children’s books and novels for young people were published immediately after the Second World War and soon became very popular. It was the heyday of a few book series such as Bibliothèque rose, Bibliothèque verte, or Signe de Piste. But while most households were gradually getting more and more modern, many novels for children and young adults involved children going off in search of adventure or leading investigations in places anchored in the past – castles, caves, forests, etc. – or in timeless, ideal places recreated within their own daily lives – heterotopias. The present research dissertation delves into a broad corpus of literary series and Boy Scout novels and explores both their literary aspects. By questioning the interaction between modernity and archaism in post-war children’s literature, it shows that both concepts are part of a narrative tension that shapes the logical development of the story and paves the way for an initiatory process reminiscent of primitive rites of passage, the narrative patterns of fairy tales and Bildungsroman. The initiation itself, however, is never completed for it is not the actual purpose of the novel. The places are significant only insofar as they belong to the quest for the utopia of eternal childhood, in which the ageless heroes as well as the places are set in perfection, in a form of ideal euchronia

Texto completo da fonteThe desert island is one of the central motifs of the adventure novel, and the objective of this doctoral thesis is to understand why it is so crucial to the definition of this genre, by determining the specificity of this place and of the works that resort to it, in order to define their particular codes and motifs, as well as their evolution throughout literary history. It focuses in particular on the mutation undergone by this genre and this space at the turn of the 19th century, especially in the works of Stevenson, Conrad and Wells. It aims to show that the island is much more than a simple setting: that it actually constitutes a literary laboratory, where a utopic form of writing can be developed. Indeed, although the desert island is an extremely coded and overdetermined literary space, it is also paradoxically a place where everything seems to be possible in terms of adventure as well as of writing: some sort of breach, out of space-time, conducive to the creation of a new reality. Between stability and wavering, utopia and reality, the island is simultaneously a scientifically established anchorage point, and a place that sometimes seems to be particularly fleeting, appearing and disappearing from the map: a contact zone between the real and the imaginary, the self and the other, the centre and the periphery. Therefore, this dissertation aims to assess to what extent adventure literature is shaped by the specificity of the island chronotope, and conversely, how adventure shapes the island’s contours, thus creating a new sub-genre that we call insular adventure. It more specifically analyses the impact of this chronotope’s evolution on the three authors’ poetics of adventure at the turn of the century, relying on a geocritical and a geopoetic approach of their works. This new methodology allows us to study the link between space and literature and to draw the outlines of a literary geography or a geopoetics of insular adventure, showing that there is indeed a certain isomorphism between the insular space and the literary form

Texto completo da fonteWhile fairy-tales now strive to emancipate their heroines from the constraints of gender and genre, the maternal remains strikingly immutable, confined by Manichean dyads and monosemic plots like Snow White by her coffin. Therefore, this thesis proposes a contemporary interpretation of the wicked stepmother’s role through the prism of her ambivalent relationship to the maternal. The resistance of this figure to subversion attempts reveals a profound anchoring of matrilineal violence within the genre: the ubiquity of this cruel mother—who poisons and imprisons—is indeed evidence of a tension-laden institution where the mother/daughter plot can only ever be tragic. The diegetic coexistence of this dyad is rendered impossible by the lack of borders between female bodies and subjects within the patriarchal canon, any existence of a Self inevitably requiring the erasure of the Other. Matrilineal relations are further complicated by the emergence of destructive dynamics within the diegesis: the stepmother wishes to ingest—and thus (re)absorb—the daughter’s body, and the latter reacts by assuming a matrophobic attitude. It is then that the biological mother reappears, functioning as the stepmother’s inverted double and implementing the splitting of maternal figures. The reflection of this other-mother unsettles and alienates the stepmother, for whom the absence of biological bond with the heroine is evidence of her utter inferiority. However, it is also through the prism of non-filiation that a subversion of the mother/daughter tragedy becomes possible, the hybridity of the stepmother allowing the creation of protean, ambivalent and inclusive alternatives to the maternal plot

Texto completo da fonteThis comparative study intends to identify the characteristics of the contemporary alphabet book. It covers mainly the period 1860-2000. The French area serves as a basis for anchoring confrontation. The Anglo-American area is mentioned in counterpoint, in order to highlight national specificities. The analysis proceeds by gradual expansion of the historic field, and through three parts covering various disciplinary fields. The first part deals with educational and pedagogical questions. It aims first to describe the changes in the teaching practices of reading skills, both academic and private, as a result of government reforms undertaken in this field; secondly to come back on the history of pedagogy through image - that was instituted in the late nineteenth century - and to observe its different applications within the alphabet book. The second part analyzes the problems related to the economy of the book. It briefly describes the evolution of printing technologies and the impact of industrialization; it then follows the evolution of editorial strategies from 1860 to 2000, strategies that reflect the gradual emergence of the alphabet album; and it finally discusses translation problems related to the internationalization of publishing. The last section addresses the ideological and cultural issues through the analysis of representations conveyed by the alphabet book, related to religion, to social and political organisation, and to the child's statute. During the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the genre goes through remarkable changes in these fields. To discuss the reasons for these changes is to analyze how contemporary society has rethought the nature of education, its relationship with the child and the individual, but also with writing, knowledge and culture
