This paper shows a flexible orchestration solution for deploying Cooperative, Connected, and Automated Mobility (CCAM) services in 5G and beyond networks. This solution is based on the concepts of federation and hierarchy of orchestration functions. The federated approach is leveraged to cope with the differentiated complexity operation when multiple network operators are considered, whereas the hierarchical approach addresses the issue of jointly orchestrating multiple edge platforms in the network of a single operator. In this complex orchestration architecture, the main contribution of this paper consists of the design and implementation of an Abstraction and Adaptation Layer (AAL) for edge clouds, a new component enabling a truly cooperative and coordinated orchestration between different edge systems, characterized by appreciable experimental performance in terms of latency.

Container virtualization technology facilitates the creation of microservices-based systems through continuous integration. Container-based apps can be deployed more easily when they use orchestration systems like Kubernetes, which has become the de facto standard. It can be difficult to create effective and precise orchestration systems, nevertheless. The scheduler, a crucial orchestrator task that allocates physical resources to containers, is the subject of this article. Scheduling strategies are developed using several Quality-of-Service metrics. The CI in CI/CD stands for continuous integration. Continuous integration drives the automation in the development and delivery of the code and developers frequently apply code changes. It’s an automated process that allows multiple developers to contribute software components to the same project without integration conflicts. CI also triggers the process of testing the applications automatically upon code commit into the repository. The automotive industry requires ultra-reliable low-latency connectivity for its vehicles, and as such, it is one of the promising customers of 5G ecosystems and their orchestrated network infrastructure. In particular, Multi-Access Edge Computing (MEC) provides moving vehicles with localized low-latency access to service instances. However, given the mobility of vehicles, and various resource demand patterns at the distributed MEC nodes, challenges such as fast reconfiguration of the distributed deployment according to mobility pattern and associated service and resource demand need to be mitigated. In this paper, we present the orchestrated edges platform, which is a solution for orchestrating distributed edges in complex cross-border network environments, tailored to Connected, Cooperative, and Automated Mobility (CCAM) use cases within a 5G ecosystem. The proposed solution enables collaboration between orchestrators that belong to different tiers, and various federated edge domains, with the goal to enable service continuity for vehicles traversing cross-border corridors. The paper presents the prototype that we built for the H2020 5G-CARMEN trials, including the validation of the orchestration design choices, followed by the promising results that span both orchestration (orchestration latency) and application performance-related metrics (client-to-edge and edge-to-edge service data plane latencies).

Ensuring security and safeguarding data privacy within cloud workflows has garnered considerable attention in research circles. For instance, protecting the confidentiality of patients' private data managed within a cloud-deployed workflow is crucial, as is ensuring secure communication of such sensitive information among various stakeholders. In light of this, our paper proposes an architecture and a formal model for enforcing security within cloud workflow orchestration. The proposed architecture underscores the importance of monitoring cloud resources, workflow tasks, and data to identify and anticipate anomalies in cloud workflow orchestration. To achieve this, we advocate a multi-modal approach combining deep learning, one-class classification, and clustering techniques. In summary, our proposed architecture offers a comprehensive solution to security enforcement within cloud workflow orchestration, leveraging advanced techniques like deep learning for anomaly detection and prediction, particularly pertinent in critical domains such as healthcare during unprecedented times like the COVID-19 pandemic.

For Web service composition, choreography has recently received great attention and demonstrated a few key advantages over orchestration such as distributed control, fairness, data efficiency, and scalability. Automated design of choreography plans, especially distributed plans for multiple roles, is more complex and has not been studied before. Existing work requires manual generation assisted by model checking. In this paper, we propose a novel planning-based approach that can automatically convert a given composition task to a distributed choreography specification. Although planning has been used for orchestration, it is difficult to use planning for choreography, as it involves decentralized control, concurrent workflows, and contingency. We propose a few novel techniques, including compilation of contingencies, dependency graph analysis, and communication control, to handle these characteristics using planning. We theoretically show the correctness of this approach and empirically evaluate its practicability.

In cloud computing, providers pool their resources and make them available to customers. Next-generation computer scientists are flocking to the cutting-edge field of cloud computing for their research and exploration of uncharted territory. There are still several barriers that cloud service providers must overcome in order to provide cloud services in accordance with service level agreements. Each cloud service provider aspires to achieve maximum performance as per Service Level Agreements (SLAs), and this is especially true when it comes to the delivery of services. A cloud service level agreement (SLA) guarantees that cloud service providers will satisfy the needs of large businesses and offer their clients with a specified list of services. The authors offer a web service level agreement–inspired approach for cloud service agreements. We adopt patterns and antipatterns to symbolize the best and worst practices of OCCI (Open Cloud Computing Interface Standard), REST (Representational State Transfer), and TOSCA (Topology and Orchestration Specification for Cloud Applications) with DevOps solutions, all of which API developers should bear in mind when designing APIs. When using this method, everything pertaining to the cloud service, from creation to deployment to measurement to evaluation to management to termination, may be handled mechanically. When distributing resources to cloud apps, our system takes into account the likelihood of SLA breaches and responds by providing more resources if necessary. We say that for optimal performance, our suggested solution should be used in a private cloud computing setting. As more and more people rely on cloud computing for their day-to-day workloads, there has been a corresponding rise in the need for efficient orchestration and management strategies that foster interoperability.

Microservice architecture is a relatively new cloud application design pattern. Each microservice has a single responsibility in terms of functional requirement, and that can be managed independently from other microservices. This is done using automated cloud orchestration systems. In this paper we analyze the time complexity of an simple swarm-like decentralized load balancing algorithm for microservices running inside OpenVZ virtualization containers. We show that it can offer performance improvements with respect to the existing centralized container orchestration systems.

Orchestration is the art of composing a musical discourse over a combinatorial set of instrumental possibilities. For centuries, musical orchestration has only been addressed in an empirical way, as a scientific theory of orchestration appears elusive. In this work, we attempt to build the first system for automatic projective orchestration, and to rely on machine learning. Hence, we start by formalizing this novel task. We focus our effort on projecting a piano piece onto a full symphonic orchestra, in the style of notable classic composers such as Mozart or Beethoven. Hence, the first objective is to design a system of live orchestration, which takes as input the sequence of chords played by a pianist and generate in real-time its orchestration. Afterwards, we relax the real-time constraints in order to use slower but more powerful models and to generate scores in a non-causal way, which is closer to the writing process of a human composer. By observing a large dataset of orchestral music written by composers and their reduction for piano, we hope to be able to capture through statistical learning methods the mechanisms involved in the orchestration of a piano piece. Deep neural networks seem to be a promising lead for their ability to model complex behaviour from a large dataset and in an unsupervised way. More specifically, in the challenging context of symbolic music which is characterized by a high-dimensional target space and few examples, we investigate autoregressive models. At the price of a slower generation process, auto-regressive models allow to account for more complex dependencies between the different elements of the score, which we believe to be of the foremost importance in the case of orchestration

N a classical combinatorial optimization setting, given an instance of a problem one needs to find a good feasible solution. However, in many situations, the data may evolve over time and one has to solve a sequence of instances. Gupta et al. (2014) and Eisenstat et al. (2014) proposed a multistage model where given a time horizon the input is a sequence of instances (one for each time step), and the goal is to find a sequence of solutions (one for each time step) reaching a trade-off between the quality of the solutions in each time step and the stability/similarity of the solutions in consecutive time steps. In Chapter 1 of the thesis, we will present an overview of optimization problems tackling evolving data. Then, in Chapter 2, the multistage knapsack problem is addressed in the offline setting. The main contribution is a polynomial time approximation scheme (PTAS) for the problem in the offline setting. In Chapter 3, the multistage framework is studied for multistage problems in the online setting. The main contribution of this chapter was the introduction of a structure for these problems and almost tight upper and lower bounds on the best-possible competitive ratio for these models. Finally in chapter 4 is presented a direct application of the multistage framework in a musical context i.e. the target-based computed-assisted orchestration problem. Is presented a theoretical analysis of the problem, with NP-hardness and approximation results as well as some experimentations

This dissertation proposes methods of high-availability for critical applications to maintain their normal function and recover from unexpected failures. Applications can be developed and deployed to work within the cloud environment to achieve flexibility in maintenance, also giving the option of monitorization. A monitoring system can monitor system metrics like CPU usage or just a specific application service, whether is it running. Additionally, creating alarms within the monitoring system, allowing to trigger notification upon a failure event occurrence helping the orchestrator to failover. The failure occurrence can happen when a certain metric is above the established threshold where the Service Level Agreement (SLA) is violated. The implemented and tested solution uses OpenStack private cloud as infrastructure support, and through use of the Heat orchestrator, TICK stack monitoring system, and a recovery engine provided with a capable solution for critical application monitoring, providing high-availability. The test results proved the solution worth in different test scenarios indicating monitoring limits of the system and showed the service recovery time to be reasonable without compromising other services.

Nowadays emerging paradigms are being adopted by several companies, where applications are built by assembling loosely-coupled distributed components, called services. Services may belong to possibly mutual distrusted organizations and may have conflicting goals. New methodologies for designing and verifying these applications are necessary for coping with new scenarios in which a service does not adhere with its prescribed behaviour, namely its contract. The thesis tackles this problem by proposing techniques for specifying and verifying distributed applications. The first contribution is an automata-based model checking technique for ensuring both service compliance and security requirements in a composition of services. We further develop the automata-based approach by proposing a novel formal model of contracts based on tailored finite state automata, called contract automata. The proposed model features several notions of contract agreement described from a language-theoretic perspective, for characterising the modalities in which the duties and requirements of services are fulfilled. Contract automata are equipped with different composition operators, to uniformly model both single and composite services, and techniques for synthesising an orchestrator to enforce the properties of agreement. Algorithms for verifying these properties are introduced, based on control theory and linear programming techniques. The formalism assumes the existence of possible malicious components trying to break the overall agreement, and techniques for detecting and banning eventually liable services are described. We study the conditions for dismissing the central orchestrator in order to generate a distributed choreography of services, analysing both closed and open choreographed systems, with synchronous or asynchronous interactions. We relate contract automata with different intutionistic logics for contracts, introduced for solving mutual circular dependencies between the requirements and the obligations of the parties, with either linear or non-linear availability of resources. Finally, a prototypical tool implementing the theory developed in the thesis is presented.

Resumo:
Abstract Effective field development planning is critical to maximize the value of opportunities. It can be a complex process due to factors like time, resource constraints, and siloed domain applications. To overcome these challenges an effective dataflow orchestration is required between subsurface, well, facility & economics to ensure coherency and auditability. This paper presents the possible digital transformation of field development planning using smart algorithms and automated dataflow orchestration to generate & evaluate numerous optimized development concepts rapidly. Extensive research has resulted in smart algorithms that work back-to-back and can automatically generate field layouts for different development concepts early stage of field development. These algorithms include the blackhole operator for specifying optimal reservoir targets using quality maps, an industry-standard trajectory engine for designing drillable wells, an evolutionary algorithm for placing facilities and the a-star algorithm for laying out the shortest pipeline route while avoiding surface no-go zones. These algorithms now function on a cloud-native digital technology that can automate the evaluation of field development plans by orchestrating data flow between subsurface, well, facility & economics. In the traditional waterfall approach for field development planning, it takes several months for each discipline to prepare data and takes many iterations between disciplines to ensure feasibility for different development concepts. In the early phase of development, teams often do not have enough time to screen a wide range of development concepts, and the opportunities presented for sanction with limited options, and often not sanctioned or recycled. The results demonstrate its exceptional ability to identify multiple reservoir targets while seamlessly adhering to a predefined injection scheme. Moreover, this solution connects these targets to optimally placed facilities using drillable, optimized trajectories and then links the facilities with pipelines that are positioned in the most efficient manner possible. To showcase our solution, we utilized the synthetic field, Olympus, which was developed by TNO for EAGE Olympus Challenge. The transformational digital solution presented here would enable coherent data sharing across all discipline and empower multi-disciplinary team to achieve faster screening of a larger number of development scenarios, leading to more efficient decision-making in field development planning. The modular and flexible solution enables refinement of the field development plan throughout the project maturation journey with different trade-offs between accuracy and efficiency. The presented innovative solution breaks down organizational silos between the reservoir, wells, and facility domains by integrating discipline specific consideration upfront and allowing them to perform detailed analysis on coherent and consistent data. Having these smart algorithms on a cloud-native data flow orchestrator allows for fast production of multiple technically feasible development concepts. The solution has been successfully validated by multiple field development teams across the globe.
