The relationship between social skill deficits and emotional and behavioural problems has led researchers to examine the cognitive and behavioural elements of social skill acquisition in childhood. This research aimed to compare the effectiveness of two components of the Aussie Optimism program for enhancing social behaviour in late childhood. One hundred and twenty-eight children (68 boys and 60 girls) aged between 9 and 12 years from two schools participated in the study: (a) 34 students received the social life skills program; (b) 49 students received the optimistic thinking skills program; and (c) 45 students were assigned to a no-treatment control group. Children were assessed with self-report and teacher-report measures of social skills, adjustment and explanatory style at pretest, posttest and three months follow-up. In addition, the relationship between these variables at pretest and health-related variables measured throughout the intervention was examined. The results indicated that the social skills program improved the social skills of participating children at posttest. No intervention effects were found for explanatory style. No intervention effects were found for teacher-rated measures of behaviour or adjustment, although in general students improved on these measures over time. Eating breakfast was associated with increased social skills, and better teacher-rated academic performance and adaptive functioning at pretest. Stressful life events were negatively correlated with academic performance and teacher-rated happiness at pretest, and higher exercise levels were associated with less teacher-rated social problems at pretest. This research indicates that the social life skills intervention program improves the social skills of participating children in the short-term. Limitations and implications of the present findings are discussed. Further research is needed to clarify the impact of health-related variables on intervention outcomes for children.

Introduction: Peripheral nerve injury can lead to a high functional loss to the patient. Due to this factor, many researches seek to propose techniques to improve the functionality of a reinnervated muscle. The End-to-Side Neurorrhaphy (ESN), without injury to the donor nerve, brought great contribution, since from this discovery, any nerve can be used as donor nerve without damages to themselves or to the structures innervated by it. However, after a neurorrhaphy, the time for axonal regeneration will determine atrophy of the muscle fibers. Electrical stimulation would prevent this negative factor. Purpose: This research aimed to study the efficiency of electrical stimulation in the regeneration of the cranial tibial muscle after section and end-to-side neurorrhaphy of the distal stump of the peroneal nerve to the lateral aspect of the tibial nerve. Methods: A total of 120 male Wistar rats (Rattus norvergicus) were used, electrostimulated with Russian and Aussie current, after End-to-Side Neurorrhaphy in two different periods, 45 and 90 days, divided into 11 groups: Initial Control Group (ICG); End-to-Side Neurorrhaphy Group (EESNG45 and EESNG90); End-to-Side Neurorrhaphy with Aussie Stimulation Group (ASG45 and ASG90); End-to-Side Neurorrhaphy with Russian Stimulation (RSG45 and RSG90); Unnerved Group (UG45 and UG90); Final Control Group (FCG45 and FCG90). Morphometric analyzes of the muscular and functional tissues of the rats of all 11 groups were performed, comparing the trophic regeneration response of muscle tissue. Results and Discussion: The results of the mean values of the cranial tibial muscle fiber area of the electrostimulated groups, ASG45 (2202.64μm2), RSG45 (2198.91μm2), ASG90 (2759.94μm2) and RSG90 (2777.28μm2) were always higher than the surgical control group EESNG45 (1778.27 μm2) and EESNG90 (1904.67 μm2), repeating the same result ratio with respect to the smaller diameter, ASG45 (44.14μm), RSG45 (43.71μm), ASG90 (51.06μm) and RSG90 (51.31μm), higher than the EESNG45 surgical control groups (30.43μm) and EESNG90 (142.38μm). In relation to the density of connective tissue the results were: ASG45 (7.92%), RSG45 (8.84%), ASG90 (9.665%) and RSG90 (7.00%). The results for the Maximum Contraction Strength Test the ASG45, RSG45, ASG90 and RSG90 electro-stimulated groups presented higher results than the group that only performed neurorrhaphy. The evaluation of the intensity of the footprint between the groups with different periods of electrostimulation times, 45 and 90 days, had a positive influence in the longer period, group 90, with a mean of 21.94 of pressure intensity of the footprint. Conclusion: The comparison between groups with different periods of electrostimulation, 45 and 90 days, showed that was no significant difference between groups of the same electrostimulation period, but between the groups with different periods, 45 and 90 days, a positive influence occurred in the longer period, thus confirming that is a direct relationship in the improvement of the morphological and functional characteristics of muscle tissue after ESN with the increase of the electrostimulation period.

Studies report that alternating current is more effective in promoting analgesia than low frequency pulsed currents. However, the hypoalgesic potential and the clinical use of the medium frequency alternating current in kHz (Aussie) are based on hypothetical mechanisms of action. The present study aimed to investigate the hypoalgesic potential of the Aussie Current (AC) in healthy individuals. Eighty-one healthy subjects underwent electrostimulation by using kilohertz-frequency alternating current for 20 minutes and were randomized into three distinct groups (1 kHz, 4 kHz or placebo). Pressure pain threshold (PPT, algometry), conditioned pain modulation (CPM, ischemic pain in the contralateral upper limb and algometry), temporal summation (TS, algometry) were measured before and after intervention, the level of anxiety (STAI-T and STAI-E), in turn, was measured only at the pre-intervention. At the end of the protocol, subjects were questioned regarding the treatment they received and the comfort during the stimulation (numerical scale) and, similarly, investigators were questioned about their expectation related to subject’s allocation groups. These responses were recorded and used to test the adequacy of the masking procedure regarding the subject and the investigator. The level of anxiety evaluated did not a statistically significant difference between the groups, who received the active AC (1 kHz / 4kHz) or placebo, (p> 0.05). Regarding PPT, there was no statistically significant difference in the active AC 1 kHz, active 4 kHz and placebo groups at any of the moments evaluated. The active group AC 4 kHz presented a statistically significant reduction in the amplification of pain intensity, verified by the reduction of perceived pain intensity, in the tenth (p = 0.02), twentieth (p = 0.01) and thirtieth second (p = 0.001) in the TS test. The active group AC 1 kHz, in turn, presented significant reduction of pain intensity only at the end of the measurement (thirty-second, p = 0.01). In the evaluation of the CPM, there was no significant difference of the PPT, during induction of ischemia, in the AC active groups 4 kHz and active AC 1 kHz, before and after intervention (p> 0.05). However, in the placebo group there was a significant reduction in PPT, only during induced ischemia, both before and after intervention (p = 0.01). Thus, our study provides evidence that kilohertz-frequency AC current, especially when used with an equivalent 4 kHz frequency, presents hypoalgesic effect, having having possible inhibitory action in the Central Nervous System (CNS).
No entanto, no grupo placebo, houve redução significativa do LDP, apenas durante a isquemia induzida, comparando pré e pós-intervenção (p=0,01).

Introduction: Electrical stimulation, a non-pharmacological resource, has been widely used for pain relief. The aussie current has presented analgesic potential effect, however, its form of action is still hypothetical. Objective: to evaluate the effect of aussie current on nociception and motor behavior in an animal model of inflammatory joint pain. Methods: 36 male Wistar rats were used and the inflammation was induced in the knee by intra-articular injection of a mixture of 3% carrageenan and 3% kaolin. The animals, randomly distributed, were separated into six groups: four groups were treated with aussie current with high or low intensity combined with high or low frequency, burst duration of 4 ms and burst frequency of 50 Hz for 20 minutes; negative control group was remained anesthetized during this same period and the positive one was treated with morphine (5 mg/kg), each group consisting of 6 animals. Primary, secondary and thermalv hiperalgesy, as well as the exploratory locomotor activity of the animals were evaluated. A single investigator performed all assessments, in addition to being masked, and the therapist did not interfere in the assessments. The results were expressed as mean ± SEM. Differences between the groups were related by the two-way ANOVA with the post hoc Tukey test. Values of p <0.05 were considered significant. Results: There was a significant reduction of the deep mechanical threshold 24 hours after induction of inflammation when compared to baseline in all groups (p <0.002). No significant differences were observed in the post-treatment evaluations with the aussie current at moments 0h, 2h, 4h, 6h immediately after the first application and after repeated applications for five consecutive days, only the morphine treated group presented reduction of hyperalgesia (p <0.02). Conclusion: the aussie current did not show antinoceptive effect in animal model of inflammatory pain.

Aboriginal people make a great contribution to Australian sport in conditions of considerable adversity, and yet their contribution goes largely unacknowledged. This study investigates the experiences of one Aboriginal family with an extensive history of involvement with Australian Rules Football using methodologies which seek, and value, Aboriginal perspectives on their involvement. It privileges Indigenous knowledge. The study focuses particularly on the involvement of the Hayward family in Australian Rules Football - the game they love - and in which they have been intensely involved for many generations. The study describes how the Haywards of southwest Western Australia, like most Aboriginal families, experienced an extensive period of colonisation in which their social and cultural autonomy and power were eroded. The historical experience of Aboriginal Australians is vastly different to that of mainstream Australians, and grossly inequitable, not only in terms of economic and educational opportunity, but also in terms of access to sporting opportunities. In many ways, the story of the Hayward family is representative of the experiences of many Black sportsmen and women over the past hundred years. It is suggested that, in order to understand Aboriginal participation and foster the development of Aboriginal sportspeople of all ages, an understanding of the context of their lives is crucial. This study then, explores my extended family's experiences as participants in mainstream sport. It describes how the Haywards, like their community contemporaries, have confronted the limited opportunities afforded to them in their ambitions to gain access, equity of participation, and appropriate reward for effort in their sporting endeavours.
Over many generations of Aboriginal participation in the game, there has been considerable inequality of opportunity to enter and participate. In their efforts to participate, members of the Hayward family faced many obstacles unacknowledged by non-Aboriginal players, administrators and spectators. The study shows that many of these obstacles had little to do with the sporting prowess of the Haywards. Every past and present player interviewed as part of this research told of circumstances where they felt that they had not been given a fair go - be it by an umpire, a team official, opposing players, players from their own team, or the crowd. For every case of acceptance of Aboriginal players by a football club, there are many stories of rejection by other clubs. Despite these obstacles, the study found that the Haywards (like many Aboriginal people) see sport (and particularly football) as significant in their lives. They love the game but, equally importantly, they believe that sporting prowess can open a path of entry to mainstream society, provide important economic advantages and offer opportunities for broader social participation while maintaining strong traditions of Aboriginal virtuosity and relationships. The study concludes by suggesting that, despite the adversities encountered by this family in their desire to participate in football, there has been much in the game that has brought pleasure, a sense of success, satisfaction and achievement to them. While this is the story of one family, I believe it provides important insights into experiences common to many Aboriginal families and sportspersons, and that this research deepens our understanding of Australian social history. Football has been, and continues to be, a valued part of the lives of many Aboriginal people.

The viennese soul, the central theme of this work, has been embodied in Friedrich Torberg and at the sane time has survived through him. Born in a jewish upper middle-class family during the last years of Francois-Foseph's reign, he belongs to the generation of writers who contributed to make the so special viennese spirit live and be glorified at the end of the 19th century. A young and celebrated writer in a young republic haunted by monarchy, he had to leave his hometown during the anschluss. His first destination was Prague, his second homeland, he then lived in switzerland and france and finally went into exile in the united states. There his inspiration dried up in this world so different from his. His circle of acquaintances included famous exile writers and his literary style reflected this mutation in his own world as well as the world historical events. In 1951 he finally went back to Vienna where he remained a political and cultural reference until his death. He incessantly worked at keeping the jewish viennese spirit of his youth alive in a modem world where it did not any longer have a place. He used to like to call himself : « the last jewish writer of the german language »
