We evaluated agreement in the location and occurrence of 20th century fires recorded in digital fire atlases with those inferred from fire scars that we collected systematically at one site in Idaho and from existing fire-scar reconstructions at four sites in Washington. Fire perimeters were similar for two of three 20th century fires in Idaho (1924 and 1986). Overall spatial agreement was best in 1924 (producer’s accuracy = 94% and 68% and user’s accuracy = 90% and 70% for the 1924 and 1986 fires, respectively). In 1924, fire extent from the atlas was greater than for fire scars, but the reverse was true for 1986. In 1986, fire extent interpreted from the delta normalized burn ratio derived from pre- and post-fire satellite imagery was similar to that inferred from the fire-scar record (producer’s accuracy = 92%, user’s accuracy = 88%). In contrast, agreement between fire-scar and fire-atlas records was poor at the Washington sites. Fire atlases are the most readily available source of information on the extent of late 20th century fires and the only source for the early 20th century. While fire atlases capture broad patterns useful at the regional scale, they should be field validated and used with caution at the local scale.

The Slovak National Archives in Bratislava contain a large manuscript catalogue of an extensive book collection formerly located in one of the numerous residences of the branched aristocratic family Ziči, namely in Voderady near Trnava. The manuscript catalogue, entitled Catalogus Librorum Bibliothecae Vedrodiensis 1894 [A Catalogue of the Books of the Voderady Library 1894], presents a library which, according to information from the 19th century, contained about 12,000 volumes. In the catalogue, the books are divided into 19 thematic groups: theological works and prayer books, linguistic publications, dictionaries and manuals, periodicals, works on arts and crafts, Hungarian novels and short stories, German and Italian novels and short stories, French novels and short stories, English novels and short stories, the works of literature of other European and domestic provenance as well as ancient classics in various editions, memoirs, historical works, geographical literature and travelogues, natural-science publications, works on sports, specialised works on horse breeding, works on economy, legal and political works, and prints referred to as special works. This paper focuses on the thirteenth thematic group of the Voderady library, namely geographical literature and travelogues (Földrajz, Útleírás). This has been motivated by the fact that members of the Ziči family, the owners of the Voderady residence Jozef Ziči (1841–1924) and his brother Augustín (1852–1925), enjoyed not only travelling around Europe but also exploring distant exotic lands. Consequently, this group contains 717 registered titles, forming the largest group of the Voderady library. The presented literature in Hungarian, French, English and German comprises a wide range of works including travelogues, atlases and maps, tourist guides, manuals and professional geographical publications of both domestic and foreign provenance.

The 16-volume "Reeks Nederlandse Dialect-atlassen" - RND (Atlases of Dutch Dialects Series; 1925-1976), which was started by Edgar Blanquaert, is due of the major sources of the study of linguistic variety in Dutch and Frisian. Very positive evaluations have already been made by researchers in the field of linguistic geography. In the present contribution, it will be shown that also from a sociolinguistic point of view the RND can be considered a distinctly progressive project. This is clear from the method of fieldwork chosen (personal interviewing; narrow phonetic transcription; original data on display maps), from the choice of location (particular attention for the urban character) and from the selection criteria for informers (several informers per location, great attention for middle-class speakers and relatively young speakers). The sociolinguistic character is strengthened by the additional information in the section Taaitoestand' (socio-linguistic situation), in which a brief sociolinguistic description of the location studied is given. The information to the following aspects: the period during which fieldwork took place, the fieldworkers, Flanders versus the Netherlands, local variation and, finally, social variation.

This essay examines the recurring preoccupation with geography in W. E. B. Du Bois’s and Jessie Redmon Fauset’s African American children’s magazine, The Brownies’ Book (1920–1921). Drawing in part on conventions established by early Black periodicals, including an emphasis on the rich global presence of non-Western peoples and places, many of the magazine’s features, from its stories and poems to its images and games, offered Black children a much wider view of their place in the world—both literally and imaginatively—than that provided by typical U.S. schoolroom atlases and geographies, which tended to have little to say (or show) about countries and continents outside North America and Europe. By aiming to develop in its readers alternative forms of geographic and political consciousness, The Brownies’ Book provocatively recast geography as a radical mode of knowledge available to Black children through cultural as well as cartographic forms, in the process remapping Black childhood itself.

Vilnius University Library possesses in its collections the personal library of distinguished historian, Joachim Lelewel (1786–1861), an alumnus and a professor of the Imperial University of Vilna. It consists of books, atlases, maps and other stocks gathered by Lelewel during his exile in Paris and Brussels. In his will, Lelewel bequeathed his library to Vilnius University, should that remembrance institution be restored. The library was temporarily stored at several locations, such as the Polish School at Batignolles (Paris), and Kórnik Library after 1874. In the fall of 1919 Vilnius University was reestablished by the Polish government under the name Stefan Batory University. The institution inherited former university’s meager library which had experienced heavy losses and deprivation during the decades of the Russian rule. Bringing to Vilnius extensive assets of printed and archival records gathered by the Polish emigrants in Western Europe through the 19th century was a great opportunity for the university library as it might significantly enrich its modest possessions. Lelewel’s personal library as well as Library and Archives of the Polish Museum at Rapperswil (Switzerland) were considered as first to be transferred. This article uses archival data to reconstruct almost a four-year long (February 1922 – end of 1925) journey of the Lelewel’s library from Kórnik to Vilnius.

In the early twentieth century, Rand McNally held a large share of the commercial market for maps and atlases in the United States. How the company built its reputation as an American cartographic authority—by both accepting and resisting change—is the subject of this essay. Critical to the company’s success was its ability to design materials that reinforced American notions of how the world ought to appear, an indication that the history of cartography is governed not just by technological and scientific advances, but also by a complex interplay between mapmakers and consumers.

Allan Sandage was an observational astronomer who was happiest at a telescope. On the sudden death of Edwin Hubble, Sandage inherited the programmes using the world’s largest optical telescope at Palomar to determine the distances and number counts of galaxies. Over many years he greatly revised the distance scale and, on reworking Hubble’s analysis, discovered the error that had led Hubble to doubt the interpretation of the galaxies’ redshifts as an expansion of the Universe. Sandage showed that there was a consistent age of creation for the stars, the elements and the cosmos. Through work with Baade and Schwarzschild he discovered the key to the interpretation of the colour–magnitude diagrams of star clusters in terms of stellar evolution. With others he founded galactic archaeology, interpreting the motions and elemental abundances of the oldest stars in terms of a model for the Galaxy’s formation. He published several fine atlases and catalogues of galaxies and a definitive history of the Mount Wilson Observatory.

Written by the acclaimed Australian poet Kenneth Slessor, “Post-roads” is the second poem of his sequence The Atlas and of his collection Cuckooz Contrey (1932), in which it debuted. Like the other four Atlas poems, “Post-roads” begins with a quote from a prominent seventeenth-century map-maker; in this case, John Ogilby (1600–1676)—the celebrated British publisher, surveyor, and cartographer. Slessor not only transformed Ogilby’s work (and portrait) into poetic images, but made Ogilby’s “tireless ghost” the central character of his poem. This article, part of the first full-scale examination of Slessor’s ambitious but poorly understood sequence, begins by reproducing the poem and tracing the poem’s development in Slessor’s poetry notebook. To reconstruct his creative process, it details the poet’s debt to the ephemeral catalogue of atlases and maps in which he discovered his title, epigraph, central character, and a possible source for the colorfully named coaches and carriages that conveyed passengers not only throughout London and Britain beginning in the early seventeenth century, but also throughout Australia from around 1800 to 1920. After comparing poet and cartographer, we consider the poem’s relationship to two of Ogilby’s atlases: the monumental Britannia (1675) and the posthumous, if far more accessible Traveller’s Guide (1699, 1712). Both reveal how Ogilby—even from the grave—helped passengers like the poem’s “yawning Fares” trace their routes. Finally, after offering reasons for Slessor’s choice of “Guildford” out of all the place-names along the roads through England and Wales, and proposing literary inspirations for “Post-roads,” the paper returns to Slessor’s hero/artist.

As a vast photographic tableau of images sourced from antiquity, the Renaissance and early-twentieth-century popular media, Aby Warburg’s Mnemosyne Atlas (1924-29) was a means to formulating a fluid archive of cultural memory. In this exegesis, I show how Warburg’s mosaic of disparate remnants from the past has resonances with the mythopoetic structures that underpin my studio practice. Specifically, I adopt mythopoetics as both a conceptual and methodological strategy, as a vehicle for exploring first-person narratives and their capacity to formulate more defined and meaningful concepts of historical consciousness. This exegesis examines the archive as a metonymic framework that supports the ebb and flow of narrative context within the historical, cultural and subjective realms. Through references to the nature of the archive outlined in Jacques Derrida’s Archive Fever (1994) and Walter Benjamin’s concept of material history, I discuss the capacity for artefacts to inform both our historical awareness and current everyday experiences. The act of collecting as a mode of seeking out alternate forms of knowing and interpreting the past presents a counter-argument to the need to totalise historical narratives. Within this context, I draw parallels between the archival projects of Warburg and Benjamin and the contemporary works of W.G. Sebald, Gerhard Richter and Anselm Kiefer. Specifically, I investigate how Sebald’s literary works poetically explore the historical structures and practices that continue to give meaning to the every day and consider this in relation to Richter’s photographic archive Atlas, (years–ongoing) in which the artist references a mapping of identity through the blending of personal and collective cultural locations. Similarly Kiefer’s artists’ books evidence a conjuncture of first-person narrative and collective history that evokes a continuous liminal transition between present and past experience.

Imagination has a link with the mental imagery that the writer creates before he writes. Then, representation happens when that image gets registered on paper, through the words chosen to evoke it. Finally, there is recollection, which occurs when the represented image, once thought by the author, serves as a way to resist the passage of time or at least ensure its presence in it.

The concepts of dystopia and postmodernism have taken a new dimension for the past two decades. These conceptshave been explored in multiple studies from both literary and historical viewpoints, to name but these two areas thathave revealed other perspectives, which, to our knowledge, have not yet been addressed. This is the case, for example,of the relationship between dystopia and ruins. The present work explores the concepts of dystopia and ruins as theyappear in the three books (Riddley Walker (1980) by Russell Hoban, Cloud Atlas (2004) by David Mitchell and TheBook of Dave (2006) by Will Self) in the light of contemporary events and in connection with postmodernism. Thiscorpus was used to discover the links between dystopia and postmodernism through the aesthetic, ethical, poetic andpolitical values of ruins, the ubiquity of which brought us to consider the dystopian works as a depiction of the world inwhich we live. The present study has also helped highlight the destructive behavior of Man in relation to the notion ofprogress that is constantly questioned, thus becoming more of an illusion than a reality because of scenes of violencemainly illustrated by the two World Wars with the Shoah and the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki,as well as the use of chemical weapons, commonly called mass destruction weapons. Besides being a bridge betweendystopia and postmodernism, ruins stand as witnesses of Man’s sinister past toward which they direct contemplatorswhile reminding them of the vanity of their lives and the evanescence of any existence. The ubiquity of the ruinsrelentlessly plunges survivors and contemplators into a melancholy supplemented by the trauma associated to thefeeling of loss and the threat of a repetition of the past. The ruin thus becomes a form of expression, a language forpostmodern dystopias and through it, the departed speak. The traces of what has been have thus become media through

Resumo:
Knee replacement surgery is a common orthopaedic procedure that greatly benefits from a three-dimensional geometric representation of a patient's knee bone obtained from MR or CT data. The use of these image modalities pose the following challenges: (i) high imaging cost; (ii) long wait times; (iii) limited availability and (iv) in the latter, large exposure to ionizing radiation. Traditional approaches based on planar X-ray radiography are significantly less prone to these issues; however, they only provide two-dimensional information. This work presents a proof of concept study for generating patient-specific femoral bone shapes from a statistical shape atlas using anatomical features acquired from calibrated X-ray radiographs. Our hypothesis was: three-dimensional geometry can be reconstructed, within 2 millimeters RMS, by identifying features on two calibrated radiographs. We illustrate the feasibility of our approach with regards to acquiring features and the viability of reconstructing patient-specific bony anatomy. A set of reliable and relevant features is identified for which an acquisition protocol and user-interface was devised to minimize inter-observer variability. Both the data and methods used to construct the atlas are discussed as well generating shapes from features. The reconstructions accuracy was comparable to, albeit lower than, competing approaches that rely on two-dimensional bony contours.

AbstractNon-solar research at the Radiophysics Laboratory (RP) was launched in September 1946 when Joe Pawsey (1908–1962) tried unsuccessfully to observe the enigmatic ‘radio star’ in Cygnus that the British team of Stanley Hey (1909–2000, Fig. 4.1), John Parsons and James Phillips (1946) had announced in the 17 August issue of Nature. Two months later, John Bolton (1922–1993; Fig. 4.2) and research assistant Bruce Slee (1924–2016) were at Dover Heights trying to observe the Sun at 60 MHz. When it insisted on remaining inactive they decided to use their 2-Yagi antenna in sea interferometer mode to search for radio emission from other types of objects. Neither had a background in astronomy, and their astronomical knowledge and resources were virtually non-existent. Bolton (1982: 349) later described how they used the Russell, Duggan and Stewart book Astronomy to “… hazard guesses as to which types of objects might emit copious amounts of radio emission …” and Norton’s Star Atlas “… to find the position of the brightest candidate in each class.”

The method of creating a series of atlases is proposed for use in the analysis of a multi-sheet standing plan of 1865. Taking into account the mas-headquarters of the basic cartographic work, the atlases additionally use a military-topographic map of 1942 and a topographic map of the beginning of the XXI century. The method is based on the formation of maps in the format of Google Map, the creation of a vector map of pages and the use of the program SAS.Planet.

Abstract: The specialized publications in architecture facilitate the diffusion of ideas, methods and techniques of the particular period of its existence. Its contents, analyzed over time, make up an atlas of thought capable of framing the social interpretation of a spatial-temporal context under the prism of the constructive. Jean Badovici founded in 1923, together with the journalist Christian Zervos, the magazine L'Architecture Vivante (1923-1933), edited by Albert Morancé. The appearance on its pages of an architecture technically well- defined, accompanied by critiques written with critical rigor by its director, or for the authors of the works, they did of her a prestigious instrument of spread of the new ideas among the professional public. A contemporary revisiting of the texts and published projects, allows to detect the intellectual itinerary carried out by its persons in charge with regard to the convulsed and changeable European architectural environment in which they fixed its look. In this evolution manifested, in just the period of a decade, we must emphasize the prominence given to the work of Le Corbusier who, from the closure of L'Esprit Nouveau in 1925, did not hesitate in considering it as an excellent tool for exposure to the discussion of his ideas, including in it projects and writings made for a modern architecture. This paper describes the structure and mechanisms of the convective roll vortices seen by airborne lidar scattering from sea salt aerosols and measured directly by instruments on another aircraft. The observations were taken off the east coast during a cold air outbreak. In addition, we discuss the ways in which the lidar may be used to estimate some of the key parameters related to the surface heat flux. Much of what follows is based upon the work of Chou and Atlas, 1982; Melfi et al, 1984; and Atlas, 1985.

Abstract Improper general spatial kinematic chains (GSKCs) due to the effect of pair types may be generated during the process of topological synthesis of GSKCs with different types of pairs. Thus, detection of improper GSKCs is necessary in topological synthesis of GSKCs with different types of pairs. Unfortunately, it is still an unsolved problem. In this paper, a method for detecting improper GSKCs is presented. Both a necessary and sufficient condition and a sufficient condition for proper GSKCs with R, P, H, T and C pairs are introduced at first. Based on these two conditions, an algorithm to detect improper GSKCs is then developed which is very efficient and suitable for topological synthesis of GSKCs with R, P, H, T and C pairs. The proposed algorithm has been applied to topological synthesis of 1- and 2-loop, single degree of freedom GSKCs with R, P, H, T and C pairs and the corresponding atlas is obtained.

The Camisea Pipeline Transmission System (PTS) in Peru consists of two parallel pipelines, a Natural Gas (NG) pipeline and a Natural Gas Liquids (NGL) pipeline. The NG pipeline is 834 km long, including a 105 km loop. The NGL pipeline is 557 km long. Since 8 years ago and as a part of the current operation of the system, maintenance activities are being carried which, within its objectives for improvement, seek to establish a preventive approach instead a corrective approach. The involved areas in this new Management approach are geo-technics, pipelines, environment, communities and integrity. This paper describes the process named Integral Plan for Operating Risks. This process is a result of the updating of the geological-geotechnical base-line, in relation to the environmental and social context, allowing a comprehensive analysis of the status of the relation between the works and its environment, as well as planning prevention tasks able to guarantee the stability of the right of way (RoW) and the pipeline Integrity. This job is performed by both desk work (remote interpretation) and field work conducted by multidisciplinary teams, which ensures a transverse communication flow. All of this is backed by a digital database and a geographical information system (GIS). A Technical Atlas is constructed as a graphic document containing a series of cartographic and text cards regarding the sector under study as a useful instrument of preventive management for intervention in a given area. To date, a comprehensive remote analysis of the RoW has been completed and an in-site field analysis has started, upon which strategies are being developed in order to control items such as geological hazards, geological architecture, vegetation architecture, RoW stability, etc. Jobs were competed along the first 12 km as a pilot experience, which is being replicated all along the RoW.

The approval of the National Plan for Traditional Architecture (2014) gave a boost to the recognition of this heritage and provided a consensual methodological tool for its safeguarding. This text included a programme for the recovery of traditional construction systems and underlined the need for a holistic and multidisciplinary approach to their treatment. As a precedent in Andalusia, the Inventory of Popular Architecture (1994-1997) was a pioneering project to document these buildings and the activities they housed, highlighting the capacity of techniques, knowledge and objects to adapt to the environmental characteristics of the territory. Subsequently, the Atlas of the Intangible Heritage of Andalusia (2009-2014) collected a significant number of construction techniques and traditional trades linked to this vernacular architecture. This contribution is presented within the framework of two projects coordinated by the IAPH: LAPat, open laboratory of heritage and SIN-PAR, Innovation System for the Heritage of Rural Andalusia. Their common objective is to analyse social innovation related to architecture and traditional trades and the interaction of diverse stakeholders for their safeguarding. They both recognise the local community as the protagonist in safeguarding, enhancing these practices as an efficient response to the demographic challenge in the rural world. We will focus on three case studies: the dry stone technique in the province of Almería, the raw earth construction in Andalusia, and the artisanal production of lime in Morón de la Frontera. The ultimate aim is to strengthen the transmission of knowledge of these constructive techniques and to reveal their link with socio-territorial development.

Influence of energy paradigm shifts on city boundaries. The productive peripheries of Madrid Carlota Sáenz de Tejada Granados¹, Eva J. Rodríguez Romero², Rocío Santo-Tomás Muro3 1, 2, 3 Departamento de Arquitectura y Diseño. Universidad CEU San Pablo. Escuela Politécnica Superior, Campus de Montepríncipe. 28668 Boadilla del Monte, Madrid. E-mail: carlota.saenztejada@ceu.es, rodrom@ceu.es, rocio.santotomasmuro@beca.ceu.es Keywords: energy landscape, periphery, urban history, urban form, Madrid Conference topics and scale: City transformations The promotion or access to certain energy technologies has changed the humanized landscape throughout history; cities have been born around, and because of an energy source, or have been displaced in order for energy-related infrastructures to take their spot. However, and for any city from its very beginning, energy paradigm shifts have deeply altered their morphology. Not only extraction, but especially transformation and transport of resources materializes in artefacts, often controversial and soon-to-be obsolete. This is especially patent in the ever-changing city boundaries; the fringe of ‘proximity’, where the collision between the countryside and the urban mesh embodies the relations and contradictions between urban growth, energy demand and landscape protection. In a context of growing cities (both in terms of expansion of its artificial land and in terms of energy demand), we are facing two paths which not always converge: an inevitable low carbon transition and a growing sensitivity towards ordinary landscapes. This article, within the framework of the project ‘Proximity landscapes of the city of Madrid. From the 19thC to the present’, studies the development of the city of Madrid in relation to its energy access and management, in a series of key stages: mid-19thC (before the bourgeois enlargement plan approved in 1860), early 20thC (when the introduction of electricity powered a deep urban transformation and outlaying urban cores were annexed), mid-late 20thC (when a rural exodus took place and the peripheries of Madrid grew rapidly) and today.
