Research findings on what types of voluntary associations influence members’ political participation are inconsistent. We suggest the problem is the use of content-based types (e.g., political, service, leisure) as proxies for civic structures (e.g., member interaction, political talk) in organizations. Proxy measures assume structural consistency among organizations within content types. Is this assumption warranted? To investigate, we reorganize data from the American Citizen Participation Survey, using reports from individuals about the associations they joined to create a 5,371-case organization-level data set. We analyze variation in organizational structures within and between content types. We find that while types focused on partisan politics are somewhat consistent, most types are so internally varied that knowing the type gives little insight into any given organization’s structures. We offer suggestions for future data collection efforts that could capture better data on association content and structure.

The role of an integrated organization in modern trade and the economic situation is very high both for the trade sphere and for the economy of the country as a whole. An integrated organization in trade is an important economic and social tool based on the experience of countries with developed economies, which has an impact on the quality of life of millions of buyers. Retail integrated organizations as a form of integration are a promising direction of development, both in offline trade and online. At the same time, competition between such organizations is increasing. But their development in various formats and categories has more advantages than the development of enterprises of the same format with a narrow specialization.

The article is devoted to the issues of legal regulation of citizen associations in Ukraine since the content itself and structure of the right to “freedom of association” at the level of the Constitution are not detailed. At the same time, legal regulation at the level of laws also introduces ambiguity into the conceptual apparatus and leads to the conclusion that legal regulation in this area is not systematized. The article examines the constitutional provisions of the right to freedom of association in political parties and public organizations to exercise and protect one’s rights and freedoms and satisfy political, economic, social, cultural, and other interests, and analyzes the term “association” in the legislation of Ukraine. Features, which are common to all associations of citizens are highlighted, such as the voluntary nature of the association; the presence of specific intangible, but legally permitted goals; self-organization and self-regulation; and lack of authoritative powers in citizens’ associations. The article proposes to include creative unions, religious organizations, and the association of condominiums to the three types of associations foreseen by the Constitution: political parties, public organizations, and trade unions.

This study of organizational culture in selected sport associations in Western Australia introduced a quantitative methodology to explore organizational culture to show its usefulness to complement the more qualitative methods traditionally applied to the study of organizational culture. The study used the competing values approach to develop cultural profiles for three sport organizations, which were compared with the sport association members' anecdotal, subjective views of their respective organizations. While the findings reveal evidence of the tensions between volunteers and employees that suggest the existence of subcultures, this study just touches the tip of the organizational culture “iceberg” in sport management. The conclusions indicate some benefits of using the competing values model in conjunction with more qualitative methods to probe sport organizational culture.

European Federation of Psychiatric Trainees (EFPT) is an umbrella organization for national psychiatric trainee associations in Europe, aiming to develop collaboration between psychiatric trainees. EFPT states that organised trainee interest is crucial in promoting high quality psychiatric training, therefore it promotes that both general adult psychiatry and child and adolescent psychiatry trainees are represented by national trainee association in each European country. The Maintaining and Establishing a National Trainee Association Working Group (MENTA WG), a permanent EFPT working group, has been created to assist trainees in building a local trainee organization. MENTA WG supports organising meetings, helps manage the problems of functioning of an association, sends letters of support to national decision makers, helps prepare the organization's bylaws and facilitates the process of application for full EFPT membership. The group also helps reactivate the inactive associations and assists them in expansion and developing new initiatives. MENTA WG maintains close collaboration with the European Psychiatric Association Early Career Psychiatrists Committee (EPA ECPC) Task Force on Meetings and Associations and other organizations dedicated to early career psychiatrists, such as the Young Psychiatrists’ Network. In the last few years, due to the work done within MENTA WG, the EFPT family has grown and welcomed new official members, such as: Poland, Spain and Slovakia. Currently, we are planning on supporting trainees in Moldova, Bulgaria and Kosovo to establish new official organizations in these countries. We also expand our activities beyond Europe and offer counselling for psychiatric trainees from such countries as Australia or South Africa.Disclosure of interestThe author has not supplied his declaration of competing interest.

Over the past five years or so, the considerable western interest inthe role played by nongovernmental voluntary associations in Egypt hasbeen reflected in a growing English-language literature on the subject.Researchers tackle the question from a range of perspectives. One approach, relatively state-centered and legalistic, focuses on howCairo manages to control, co-opt, or "corporatize" autonomous organizationsincluding labor and professional syndicates, agricultural and othercooperatives, and private not-for-profit groups. The principle tool for reiningin private voluntary and community associations is the notorious Law32 of 1964. Under Law 32, the Ministry of Social Affairs can interferedirectly in all aspect of associational life-articulation of goals, election ofofficers, pursuit of projects, allocation of funds, and so on. Among the wellknownsecular nonprofit groups with international linkages that have beendenied licenses from the Ministry are the Egyptian Organization of HumanRights and the Arab Women's Solidarity Association. In this legal and policymilieu, many scholars and human rights activists argue that no registeredassociation in Egypt can properly be deemed "nongovernmental."Other analysts, however, accept Cairo's position that the threat of radicalIslam justifies authoritarian restrictions on independent organizations. The second group of studies is inspired partly by these concerns over theradicalization of Islamist associations. Scholars familiar with social, economic, and political circumstances in the Nile Valley usually try to counteracthysterical mass media portraits of "Muslim terrorists" with inquiries intothe structure, function, membership, activities, and ideologies of a range ofIslamist institutions including welfare and charitable associations. The particularstrength of politicized Islam in the 1990s, this research suggests, restson the capacity of Islamist charities to provide a crucial layer of social servicesto a burgeoning, underemployed, increasingly impoverished population.Opinion is divided, however, on the question of whether this circumstancefavors containment and stability or frustration and insurrection.A third set of studies, sometimes overlooked by scholars, comes fromwithin the Cairo-based donor community, the "development practitioners" ...

Studies using data from the United States suggest religious organizational involvement is more beneficial for health than secular organizational involvement. Extending beyond the United States, we assess the relative impacts of religious and secular organizational involvement on self-rated health cross-nationally, accounting for national-level religious context. Analyses of data from 33 predominantly Christian countries from the 2005–2008 World Values Survey reveal that active membership in religious organizations is positively associated with self-rated health. This association’s magnitude is higher than the magnitude of associations between many memberships in secular organizations and health. The positive association between involvement in religious organization and self-rated health is moderated by national levels of religious pluralism such that positive associations are primarily found in nations high in religious diversity. These results replicated in a sample of 21 majority-Christian nations from the 2010–2014 World Values Survey.

From 1947 to 1990, all health professionals gradually became part of the Health Workers' Union. At the beginning of the democratic changes in Bulgaria (1989-1990) the revival and registration of professional organizations of the medical professions began. Some of them for a short time, others for a longer period are members of the Confederation of Independent Trade Unions in Bulgaria and the Confederation of Labor "Support". With the legislative changes in the country, the healthcare professions became regulated professions, which led to the emergence of legally legitimate professional organizations. The purpose of this review is to trace and present the revival of professional organizations of health professionals in Bulgaria after 1990. Archival documents, written sources and websites of official organizations and trade unions were used for this purpose. From the collected and presented information we can conclude that according to the legislation of the Republic of Bulgaria each regulated profession should have its own professional organization, regardless of whether it is a union or an association. Some professions have independent legally legitimate professional organizations, while others are part of the Bulgarian Association of Healthcare Professionals.

The papers in this special section highlight three important questions in organization and management theory. First, evolutionary theorists studying organizations have an opportunity to address issues of organizations as units of selection. Trade associations focus their members’ attention on collective interests, creating shared understandings about issues and a collective identity that unifies an association and justifies calls for action by the association on the members’ behalf. Second, for scholars using historical and comparative frameworks, the study of trade associations presents an opportunity to study similar kinds of organizations in very different institutional settings. Many things that trade associations do are driven not because they are business interest associations but because they have to follow many of the same paths as other interest associations in the same institutional environment. Across nations, political systems differ substantially in the way interests can be pursued, with important contingencies including the difference between pluralist versus corporatist systems, the extent to which political institutions depend upon the information provided by interest groups, and the extent to which political institutions are actually open to lobbying. Third, trade associations represent powerful actors with the potential to undermine the pursuit of collective action for achieving public goods. For example, in the United States, to the extent that the decline of elite class cohesion and moderate business peak associations has weakened the forces of conciliation and compromise, strong trade associations may step into the void and make matters worse.

The Russian legislator does not have a systematic approach to criminalizing the creation of groups of a certain orientation, their leadership and participation in such groups. At first glance, a variety of norms containing a ban on the commission of such acts are the norms of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, enshrined in the Part. 1-3 tbsp. 239 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. These norms prohibit the creation of associations or organizations, their management and participation in them. This prohibition is due to the nature of the activities of the relevant association or organization. The problem is that we are talking about associations or organizations that have legal status in the Russian Federation, and the activities of the leaders or participants of such organizations, which are prohibited by the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, go beyond the scope determined by their legal status. Thus, a participant or head of a legally existing organization can carry out illegal activities under the guise of such an organization without complicity with anyone, and, consequently, the norms of Art. 239 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation cannot be classified as special norms of the Special Part on criminal associations, since the presence of a criminal association when committing these crimes is an optional circumstance.

ABSTRACT:Trade associations were widely established as new industrial and commercial organizations in modern China, particularly during the Republican era. They were characterized by enormous spatial, temporal and industrial differences, and generalizing, one-sided studies are very unlikely to lead to a truthful, precise historical understanding of these associations. Case-studies that are more fully multidimensional are urgently needed to supplement our understanding. The national bicycle industry was representative of emerging industries in modern China. This article focuses on bicycle industry-related trade associations in modern Shanghai. Files housed in the Shanghai Municipal Archives are analysed to offer a concrete dissection of an individual case-study that will illuminate broader questions in trade association historical research.

For the first time in the Russian science of international law the author of the paper performs a comprehensive analysis of the legal nature of international energy associations, their role in international administration in the sphere of energy.International energy associations are grouped into four categories depending on their legal nature: 1) associations in the form of public international organizations (IAEA; Eurato/ESAE; OPEC; EES CIS; CECH; EC; FEG; IRENA);2) associations functioning as a body of a public international organization (IEA OECD); 3) associations that can be considered as international non-governmental (transnational) organizations (WEC, IGU, IOC), (4) associations that can be classified as informal international associations (G7/G8; G20; IEF). It is noted that the international energy administration involves not only public international organizations, but also non-legal actors of international relations— international non-governmental(transnational) organizations and informal international associations. In order to determine the legal nature of international energy associations, the author considers constituent instruments, resolutions (decisions), headquarters agreements, agreements regarding privileges and immunities of international organizations, treaties and the contemporary doctrine of international law.Provisions, generalizations and conclusions provided for in the article, can be used for the development of strategies of interaction of the Russian Federation with the above-mentioned associations in the field of energy.

A transnational legal order (TLO) is emerging regarding the role of businesses in respecting human rights. This legal order includes multistakeholder initiatives, international organization recommendations and guidelines, NGO certifications, and other voluntary instruments. Many of the norms within this TLO are nonbinding and therefore lack mandatory compliance; what they may possess is persuasive power, particularly when the norms are developed, endorsed, and managed by reputable organizations. It is that reputational, or legitimacy, advantage that matters for encouraging industry associations to comply with the nonbinding norms associated with these organizations. Industry associations and other business actors will gravitate more towards legitimacy enhancing organizations when their own legitimacy is at stake. They pivot towards public organizations such as the United Nations or private NGO initiatives like the Rainforest Alliance, seeking to associate themselves publicly with these organizations that enjoy more perceived legitimacy. These business relationships with legitimizing bodies can take the form of partnerships, certifications, or other arrangements where an industry association adopts and incorporates nonbinding norms when it otherwise might not. In this essay, I discuss three transnational legal processes that encourage industry associations, their members, and other business actors to abide by nonbinding transnational legal norms concerning business and human rights.

The article deals with the corporate nature of associations and unions. Problems of conceptual apparatus, namely such definitions as “corporation”, “corporate organization”, “non-profit corporate organization”, “association (union)”, “corporate rights” are analysed in the article. This leads to the conclusion that it is difficult to identify the necessary and sufficient corporate characteristics, whether associations and unions are full-fledged corporate organizations or can be considered as quasi-corporations. These issues are considered in the light of the non-profit nature of the corporation, in view of the purposes for which it was established, of its public or public functions.

Purpose Associations perform an important role in developing a profession, by organizing professionals into a community in which relevant information and knowledge are shared, ideas expanded, contacts with other like-minded professionals made, a code of ethics established and appropriate practices for members identified. For an association to be effective, it has to perform at the highest quality level. However, no studies can be found in the academic literature on how to create high-performing associations. This paper aims to apply the high-performance organization (HPO) Framework within the Emirates Insurance Association (EIA) to evaluate its current strength and identify possible improvements that need to be implemented for EIA to achieve high performance. Design/methodology/approach In this article, the HPO Framework – which has been used and validated in many contexts, including non-profit organizations (NPOs) – is applied within the EIA to evaluate its current strength and, thereby, identify possible improvements that need to be implemented for EIA to achieve high performance. Findings The research results showed that the HPO Framework – when adapted to the circumstances of an association – is able to accurately evaluate the situation within that association and yield targeted recommendations to improve its performance. Originality/value This research fills a lacuna in the current literature on how to improve the performance of associations; it can, therefore, function as a foundation for further academic research into high performance in associations and possibly other types of NPOs. Moreover, the research results help managers of associations and NPOs in their quest for high performance by offering tangible improvement suggestions.

ABSTRACTThis poster problematizes selected presentations and outcomes of an IFLA satellite conference on the history of professional organizations of librarians and information scientists. Representatives from organizations, including ASIST and library associations around the world from four continents (Europe, North America, Asia, Africa) will meet at the Mundaneum in Mons, Belgium. The theme of the conference is “Preserving our origins: Approaches to the organization, curation, and historiography of the record of national and international organizations in libraries, information, and documentation.”An irony within information science is that its many professional associations often fail to identify and preserve their own history. Their work is documented, but often not well preserved, and hidden from a wider audience. Born digital materials are especially vulnerable to loss (Neal, 2015). This poster identifies problems and best practices in managing the documents of historical value of volunteer‐led associations and invites ASIST members to contribute to the historical work of the association. The goal is to identify common problems in preserving association histories. The poster will present several projects discussed at the IFLA satellite conference, as well as proposed ways forward that will advance historical work for the information professions.

abstract: The establishment of formal disciplinary-based associations is vital to the growth of the discipline and in facilitating the activities of people who work within the discipline. This geographical note examines the development and role of geography associations in the United States. It begins by looking at the four major geography societies which originated between 1851 and 1915 and how they specialized in their outreach and functions. This is followed by examining the role of the American Association of Geographers' regional divisions, which have created more localized geography associations for AAG members. The attributes of the AAG's nine regional divisions are considered, and then members' perspectives of these regions, based on a wide-ranging survey, are discussed. The special place of the Southeastern Division of the AAG (SEDAAG) emerges in comparing attributes and perceptions of each of the nine AAG regions.

After the revolution in 1989, the romanian society was met with a new fenomenon, that of building new associations and foundations, institutions that were meant to come to the local communities' aid by offering services that the authorities could not. Although marked by ethnic and religious diversity, the Dunarea de Jos region is known throughout history as a well-established and coherent community, that managed in time to create new mechanisms for solving collective needs. If during the period between the two world wars, the association phenomenon had a significant spread and grandeur, after the communist regime was instilled, this phenomenon stopped even thought the law that regulated the start-up of associations and foundations was not abolished. The following article is proposing the realisation of an xray of the construction of nongovernmental associations in the „Dunarea de Jos” region in the postdecembrist period, keeping in mind the subsequent objectives: the identity of the organisations constructed in the studied region (after the revolution in december 1989), the breakdown of the active NGO profiles of the „Dunarea de Jos” region, and the analysis of the phenomenon based on some statistical indicators.

Drawing on the conceptual framework of intermediations in grassroots innovation for sustainability, this paper presents the first in-depth analysis of the role of third sector organizations in citizen science. The empirical data are derived from 31 case studies of associations (representing 80% of third sector organizations in France). We identify two clusters of associations (social innovation and natural sciences) based on research domain. They differ in epistemic cultures, but they both value experiential and actionable knowledge. We present an analytical framework to characterize the role of these associations in citizen science. Derived from systemic intermediations for transitions, this framework is based on the association’s position in networks, infrastructures, and projects. Our results reveal four categories, three of which are intermediations that depend on the organization’s position in the network, the degree of structuration of its partnerships with academics, and the goals and achievements of the projects in which it is involved. Associations do not only articulate different knowledge in projects, they also contribute to organizational learning in networks. In addition, associations perform the boundary work required to build hybrid infrastructures with institutions. A fourth category unveils the complexity of structuring hybrid epistemic communities for sustainability. This four-way categorization of intermediations highlights the crucial roles of associations in a systemic approach to citizen science.

History can inconspicuously repeat itself through words and language. We explored the association between the “Black” and “African American” racial labels and the ideologies of the historical movements within which they gained prominence (Civil Rights and Black Power, respectively). Two content analyses and two preregistered experimental studies ( N = 1,204 White American adults) show that the associations between “Black” and “bias and discrimination” and between “African American” and “civil rights and equality” are evident in images, op-eds, and perceptions of organizations. Google Images search results for “Black people” evoke more racially victimized imagery than search results for “African American people” (Study 1), and op-eds that use the Black label contain more bias and discrimination content than those that use the African American label (Study 2). Finally, White Americans infer the ideologies of organizations by the racial label within the organization’s name (Studies 3 and 4). Consequently, these inferences guide the degree to which Whites support the organization financially.

The article is devoted to the consideration of modern Cossack public organizations, the dynamics of their formation, the goals of their activities. The relevance of the topic is that representatives of the Cossack movement live in all regions of the country. They are actively involved in social, political, economic and cultural life. Today in Russia there are two main organizational forms of the Cossack movement - public Cossack organizations, acting on the basis of the Federal Law “On Public Organizations”, and Cossack societies, which are included in the state register for carrying out civil service, they operate on the basis of the Federal Law “On Civil Service Russian Cossacks “. The purpose of the article is to study all-Russian public associations of the Cossacks on the basis of considering their development, formulated goals and objectives. In the course of the study, methodological principles such as historicism and scientific objectivity were used, comparative, historical-genetic, problem-chronological and “oral history” methods were used. In modern Russia, the largest and most authoritative are two public organizations of the Cossacks: the All-Russian public organization “Union of Cossacks” and the All-Russian public organization for the development of the Cossacks “Union of Cossacks-Warriors of Russia and Abroad”. These organizations demand the revival of the Cossacks as a “special nation”, participation in strengthening statehood, socio-political stability and interethnic harmony, participation in the organization of military-patriotic education of youth and educational activities, the development of the economic base of the Cossacks and the promotion of its cultural and historical characteristics.

In a recent issue in this journal, Lawton et al. and Spillman argue for the importance of studying trade associations, also referred to with the broader term meta-organization. They discuss why meta-organizations matter and why more research is needed on the topic. We fully concur with the authors that meta-organizations constitute an inflating, diverse, and undeniable phenomenon of collective action among organizations and that collective scholarly efforts are necessary to improve our understanding of meta-organizations in their multiplicity. In this article, we shed some light on a body of work already investigating the matter. They constitute what we call the “European School” of meta-organization. We show the relevance of this recent European work for the US–UK-oriented trade association research and aim to bridge the gap between these research traditions by proposing a common research agenda on key topics of resources, forms’ differentiation, coopetition, and their role in sustainability governance.

This study specifies the relationship between civic associations and their effects on communities by analyzing how two forms of civic association—neighborhood development organizations and institution-based community organizing coalitions—impact poverty in neighborhoods and cities, and poverty segregation in cities. Some social scientists argue that civic associations are the key to well-functioning democracy, allowing people to collectively organize for the promotion of their common interests, but others argue that civic associations instead breed exclusion, leaving few communities in the position to reap their benefits. Results show that not all civic associations’ effects are equal. The form of civic association is vital in determining its effects. Place-based organizations help their neighborhoods, but not their cities, unless they are organizing in poor cities. Alternatively, identity-based organizations do not affect their neighborhood but do significantly decrease city-level poverty segregation. Longitudinal analyses of neighborhoods and cities from 1990 to 2010 provide evidence.

Introduction. In developing countries, state support for the development of entrepreneurship is of crucial importance, at the same time, civil society organizations play an important role in achieving business success of micro-entrepreneurs by providing various services, consultations, defending the interests of the business community in interaction with the authorities. Non-governmental business support organizations contribute to the development not only of their members, because by providing business support and acting on behalf of the business community to improve the conditions for conducting economic activity, such organizations as a result ensure the development of the country's economy as a whole. The purpose of the paper is to analyze the possibilities of employers' organizations and their associations in promoting business development in Ukraine. Results. Employers' organizations and their associations play an important role in the formation and implementation of state economic policy, regulation of labor, social, and economic relations. The activities of employers' organizations contribute to the establishment of effective cooperation between the business community and the authorities, including through the participation of such organizations in social dialogue. Today, the largest association of employers' organizations of Ukraine - the Federation of Employers of Ukraine takes an active part in the processes of liberalization of business conditions and implements effective support for business development, including through: lobbying business interests in the state authorities of Ukraine (local and central); support at the legislative level of various business initiatives of employers; providing opportunities for legislative and business intelligence; establishment of cooperation with foreign partners; attracting business to a wide range of events, meetings and conferences at various levels - local, national and international. The Employers' Federation of Ukraine, being a full member of the International Organization of Employers, actively promotes the interests of its members also in the international arena, in particular, regarding trade and access to foreign markets, including through participation in trade forums. Conclusions. Employers' organizations and their associations are today's important business associations that have the right to conduct collective bargaining at a certain national, sectoral, and territorial level on behalf of their members. As independent institutions, employers' organizations can influence public policy, thanks to their involvement in the processes of public policy discussion, monitoring of legislative initiatives and cooperation with the government sector. Such organizations provide specialized business resources, including professional advice and services, to assist with current issues of running and supporting business development.

This article documents the prevalence in organized interest politics in the United States of organizations—for example, corporations, think tanks, universities, or hospitals—that have no members in the ordinary sense and analyzes the consequences of that dominance for the democratic representation of citizen interests. We use data from the Washington Representatives Study, a longitudinal data base containing more than 33,000 organizations active in national politics in 1981, 1991, 2001, 2006, and 2011. The share of membership associations active in Washington has eroded over time until, in 2011, barely a quarter of the more than 14,000 organizations active in Washington in 2011 were membership associations, and less than half of those were membership association with individuals as members. In contrast, a majority of the politically involved organizations were memberless organizations, of which nearly two-thirds were corporations. The dominance of memberless organizations in pressure politics raises important questions about democratic representation. Studies of political representation by interest groups raise several concerns about democratic inequalities: the extent to which representation of interests by groups is unequal, the extent to which groups fail to represent their members equally, and the extent to which group members are unable to control their leaders. All of the dilemmas that arise when membership associations advocate in politics become even more intractable when organizations do not have members.

<p>The revitalization of farmer organizations has become the central paradigm in agricultural development. In Indonesia, increasing farmer participation in farmer groups, associations and cooperatives is the strategy to revitalize farmer organizations. This study aimed to determine the factors influencing farmers' participation in farmer groups, associations and cooperatives. This study employed data from the Sugarcane and Tobacco Plantation Farm Household Survey in 2014, consisting of 8,831 (70.73%) sugarcane farmers and 3,645 (29.27%) tobacco farmers. Logistic regression analysis was used to identify the factors contributing to farmers' participation in each organization. The results showed that harvest area, access to extension and contract farming positively affect farmers’ participation in organizations. Farmers' age and education positively affect their participation in associations and cooperatives but do not significantly affect their group participation. Land tenure has an ununiform effect on farmer participation in each organization. Tenant farmers are less likely to participate in farmer groups and cooperatives, but they tend to participate in associations. Meanwhile, the owner farmers are less likely to join cooperatives. Government support positively influences farmer group participation, shows a negative effect on participation in associations and has a non-significant effect on participation in cooperatives. Finally, farmers' wealth gives a positive effect on their participation in cooperatives, a negative effect on their participation in associations and a non-significant effect on farmer groups. These results depict that farmer groups are more inclusive than cooperatives and associations.</p>

This paper investigates the political determinants of corporatist and pluralist employers' associations and reflects on the origins of the varieties of capitalism in the early decades of the 20th century. We hypothesize that proportional, multiparty systems tend to enable employers' associations to develop into social corporatist organizations, whereas nonproportional, two-party systems are conducive to the formation of pluralist associations. Moreover, we suggest that federalism tends to reinforce incentives for pluralist organization. We assess our hypotheses through quantitative analysis of data from 1900 to the 1930s from 16 nations and case studies of the origins of peak employers' associations in Denmark and the United States. Our statistical analysis suggests that proportional, multiparty systems foster, and federalism works against, social corporatist business organization; employers' organization is also greater where the mobilization of labor, traditions of coordination, and economic development are higher. These factors also largely explain pre-World War II patterns of national coordination of capitalism. Case histories of the origins of employers' associations in Denmark and the United States further confirm the causal importance of political factors. Although Danish and American employers had similar interests in creating cooperative national industrial policies, trajectories of associational development were constrained by the structure of party competition, as well as by preindustrial traditions for coordination.

Ethnic organizations such as presently exist in large numbers in West Germany are often viewed as indicating a lack of social integration and participation by immigrants in the host society. It is here argued that whether these organizations segregate the immigrants and make their assimilation more difficult, as research on minority groups often claims, or whether they serve as mediating institutions to help integrate and assimilate the newcomers, as other theories would lead one to expect, will depend on the basic orientation of the ethnic organization itself toward the host country. The results of a study carried out in 1981–82 among Greek, Italian and Turkish immigrants indicate the distinctive characteristics of the organizations serving each of these three different groups, the extent to which persons of each nationality participate in these associations, the reasons they give for their participation, and the ways in which participation in organizations with different orientations affects the social integration and assimilation of the individual immigrants.

The rearing of children and young people within one of the Swedish horse riding organizations. The purpose of this article is to analyze the importance and meaning of education within one of the Swedish horse riding organizations – Ridfrämjandet. The organization was formed in 1948, and shortly after its establishment it is clear that it attracted especially young people and children. Ridfrämjandet, as many other sports associations, achieved governmental subsidies for their youth activities and a large amount of their work was devoted to courses. The sociologist Tomas Peterson has used two concepts to characterize the educational strivings within the sports associations: education for competition and education for citizenship. Furthermore he has demonstrated that the courses arranged by the Swedish Football Association soon after their introduction developed competitive characteristics. By contrast, the courses arranged by Ridfrämjandet focused on citizenship education. In order to characterize the educational strivings in Ridfrämjandet, another concept has to be used as well – education for caretaking. It is possible that the caretaking characteristics in the equestrian organization can be connected to the process of feminization.

Responses from 194 of the 307 invited organizations were used. The six organization types viewed the impact of the legislative bill differently (p < 0.05). Hospital pharmacy associations and boards of pharmacy, to a lesser extent, supported the legislative bill; non-PMA-member generic manufacturers and state pharmacy associations were relatively neutral. The medical associations and the PMA-member companies opposed the passage of the bill. Charitable gifts provide vital support for the operation of many associations. Using data collected from members of six professional associations, this study examines the factors that influence charitable donations to this particular type of organization. The results of logistic regression models suggest that the decision to give to associations is not driven by the inducement of tax deduction but by members’ commitment to associations, their level of engagement in these organizations, and whether they were solicited for a charitable gift. In addition, retired non-U.S. members who have supported other community organizations are more likely to donate to associations as are members working for government and those holding higher job positions. The results suggest that soliciting donations significantly increases the propensity to give, particularly among members with low educational attainment. Practical implications of the empirical findings are discussed.

Falling in-between the category of employers and employees, solo self-employed persons are poorly accommodated by the traditional system of corporatist interest representation through which the interests of employers are represented in employers’ associations, and the interests of employees are represented by trade unions. For business associations ‘micro businesses’ with no employees are difficult to reach and serve, as their interests are considered distinct from companies with employees. Trade unions in many countries even resisted the emergence of solo self-employment, fearing that these and other flexible arrangements would undermine not only secure working conditions but also union solidarity. This study examines differences in membership of interest organizations among solo self-employed workers. Various types of organizations are investigated, not only trade unions and business associations, but also new freelancer associations. Theoretically, three categories of determinants are examined to explain differences in membership: economic explanations, social explanations, and political explanations. Empirically, survey data are used from the Netherlands, a country with an increase in self-employment and a diverse supply of interest organizations. It is concluded that economic determinants explain both ‘generic’ membership (of any organization), as well as membership of specific organizations. Social and political determinants do not explain generic membership, but instead help to explain why some self-employed workers join particular types of organizations.

The article is devoted to the legal nature of public formation and the problem of determining the appropriate definition. The essence of public formation as an independent institution of public society is analyzed. A comparison and comparison of the concepts «participant in civil relations» and «public formation» was carried out. The definition of public formation and types of public formations given in the sectoral regulatory legal act: the Law of Ukraine «On State Registration of Legal Entities, Individual Entrepreneurs and Public Formations» – political parties, public associations, professional unions and their associations – is characterized, creative unions, permanent arbitration courts, employers’ organizations and their associations, separate divisions of foreign non-governmental organizations, representative offices, branches of foreign charitable organizations. A conclusion was drawn on the division of public formations into those that have the status of a legal entity, and public formations that do not have the status of a legal entity. It is noted that there are such terms synonymous by their legal nature in the field of accounting of public entities as «state registration», «legalization» and «accreditation». The information on the types of public formations that must be entered into the Unified register of public formations – an electronic database containing information on the relevant legalization (registration) – has been analyzed. Attention is focused on the fact that we are talking about political parties; NGOs; trade unions, trade union organizations; employers’ organizations, associations of employers’ organizations; all-Ukrainian, local associations of credit unions; charitable organizations: all-Ukrainian, international, local charitable organizations, branches, branches, representative offices of all-Ukrainian, international charitable organizations; creative unions; Chambers of Commerce and Industry: Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Ukraine, Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, regional Chambers of Commerce and Industry; permanent arbitration courts; associations of local self-government bodies. Since the current national legislation does not contain a definition of public formation, based on the results of the research, such a definition of public formation is proposed as an organization that is created and functions in order to satisfy various public rights and interests.

This article analyzes the organization of employers in the Netheriands for their industrial relations tasks. After first describing the role of individual employers and explaining why that role is a relatively small one, the article emphasizes the structure and functioning of employers associations in industrial relations. Special attention is given to the existence of pluralistic associations in a country where by tradition most if not all social organizations are pluralistically organized. The postwar wage and economic policies of the Dutch government have encouraged a high degree of centralized decision-making among employers as well as among labor organizations. The article concludes with some observations about the likely consequences of a current trend toward greater decentralization.

In response to increasing cultural diversity at faith-based healthcare organizations, sincere, responsive, and sensitive leadership is critical to ensuring the organizational commitment of African American employees. Research was lacking on the relationship between toxic leadership and organizational commitment within faith-based healthcare settings. Further, little research existed on the ways toxic leadership affects the organizational commitment of African American workers. The purpose of this quantitative, non-experimental, correlational study was to examine the relationship between toxic leadership and organizational commitment among African American employees of faith-based healthcare organizations. This study's theoretical framework was based on Schmidt's toxic leadership theory and Allen and Meyer's organizational commitment theory. The variables for this study included toxic leadership and organizational commitment, categorized as affective, continuance, or normative commitment. The sample consisted of 84 African American employees of faith-based healthcare organizations working in Central Florida. Data were collected via an online survey consisting of the Organizational Commitment Questionnaire and Schmidt's Toxic Leadership Scale. The analysis consisted of three correlation tests to examine the relationship between (a) toxic leadership and (b) organizational commitment scales (affective, continuance, and normative). Results of the Spearman correlations indicated no statistically significant associations between toxic leadership and affective commitment or normative commitment. There was a significant, inverse association between toxic leadership and continuance commitment. Although more research is needed to understand toxic leadership and organizational commitment in faith-based facilities, the current study provides a foundation for future investigations. Keywords: Healthcare, Faith-based Healthcare, Organizational Commitment, Toxic Leadership

This special issue on membership associations publishes eight articles from a variety of disciplines that illustrate the continuing advancement of scholarship related to member-based nonprofit organizations. Each addresses one or more enduring questions about the existence and influence of associational activity. The articles are ordered according to the level of analysis from the cognitive/intrapersonal to the systemic/societal. Taken together, they demonstrate the scholarly and practical value of explicitly addressing membership dynamics and associational structures within the broad field of nonprofit studies. They also suggest important areas for future study. After introducing the special issue and articles, to further build understanding of membership association dynamics, we review recent publications that complement the issue and offer ideas for additional research.
