Concentrating on six representative media sites, 28 Days Later (2002), Dawn of the Dead (2004), Land of the Dead (2005), Children of Men (2007), Snowpiercer (2013), and one television series The Walking Dead (2010-present), this dissertation examines the strain of post-millennial apocalyptic media emphasizing a neo-liberal form of collaboration as the path to survival. Unlike traditional collaboration, the neo-liberal construction centers on the individual’s responsibility in maintaining harmony through intra-group homogeny. Through close textual analysis, critical race theory, and feminist media studies, this project seeks to understand how post-racial and post-feminist representational strategies elide inequality and ignore tensions surrounding racial or gender differences to create harmony-through-homogeny in popular apocalyptic film and television.

Almost 10 years after the attack on World Trade Center Sept. 11 2001, Osama bin Laden was shot and killed on May 2 2011 in Pakistan. How was this event framed by the media with regards to the global war on terror? This study compares two different American newspapers – the New York Times and the New York Daily News – and how they framed the war on terrorism in the Middle East from May 2 to May 15 2011. By analyzing the framing in a perspective of the four functions of framing theory: define problems, diagnose causes, make moral judgments and suggest remedies, we found considerable differences in each papers frames. Through a qualitative text analysis of the opinion pages in these two newspapers, using three themes as a base, we found a number of differences. While the New York Times contained a form of open discussion about problems and remedies, New York Daily News takes an emotional and moral approach. These differences in content may affect the opinions of the readers. We speculate that the more open and suggestive nature of the New York Times, also opens the minds of the readers enabling them to form opinions in a liberated sense. Thus the more closed, emotional and moral nature of the New York Daily News may have greater impact on an individual’s ability to form its own opinions and moral values.

According to Lacan, in our time, we can talk of “death of the father”, that is a radical change in the aspect of the father figure. It’s a type of father that is completely different from the old pater familias. How can we consider or where can we place the mafia godfathers? Are they to be considered as an exception or have they also evolved through the years like any other father figure? This dissertation will try to analyze the godfather figure (in particular the Italian-American one) by considering some famous padrini of the literary, movie, and TV world. I will consider The Godfather by Mario Puzo, lingering in particular in the characters of Vito and Michael Corleone in both the picture and the novel. At the same time, I will compare them to the one who has become one of the most praised contemporary fictional godfathers: Tony Soprano. I chose these mafiosi not only because of their celebrity, but also because I can compare the old mafia to the new. I will start by tracing a short story of Italian mafia in the United States, and by lingering on the meaning of the word “godfather”. These characters will be debated through the relationship they have with their Family and their traditional family, their children and not less important with the women of the family, in particular their mothers and wives. I will also analyze if their families – as Italian Americans – have evolved like other families in literature or reality.

Although prosocial behavior has been moving in directions that highlight complexity over the past few years, little research has assessed the cost of this behavior. This study created a scale assessing the tendency to perceive costs of prosocial behavior. This was validated via focus groups, content and discriminant validity. In six focus groups, 29 13- to 25-year olds described specific prosocial acts and the costs that they experienced from the act. A questionnaire was then given to 391 emerging adults. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were conducted. Results suggest a four-factor solution with adequate model fit, suggesting cognitive, behavioral, emotional, and social costs. Convergent and discriminant validity add support to the scale. Discussion focuses on the implications of this measure for the prosocial behavior literature and important future directions.

The aim of this mini-dissertation is to map out the nature of these contested knowledges of the Prestwich Street dead, and to describe and analyse the struggles of dominance and resistance these different ways of knowing gave rise to. My argument throughout is that out of the clashing of these knowledges emerged a frontier - a discursive space of conflict and turbulence that came into being with the surfacing of the dead, and dissipated with an official decision to prevent basic anatomical research on their skeletal remains. If this discursive battle and this frontier opened up the post-apartheid public sphere to new and emergent (South) African identities, then it also closed down the public sphere with the further entrenchment of particular disciplinary identities and formations, namely archaeology, physical anthropology, development, and heritage resources management.

Despite the financial and economic crisis, the high-tech industry has experienced a consistent activity in terms of mergers and acquisitions during the last ten years. Such interest seems still solid as deals continue to hit the headlines of business newspapers. This paper aims at exploring the takeover market focusing on the acquisition of high tech companies during the 2006-2016 decade. We compare the acquisition performed by incumbents competing in the same field, with those undertaken by companies coming from other sectors. Companies willing to acquire or merge another company, are driven by different rationales: the securement of new skills to strengthen their offer and improvement the efficiency of their internal processes belong respectively to the so called horizontal-merger and vertical-merger. An alternative purpose behind the decision to combine two entities lies in the company’s intent to diversify its business, often identified in the literature as conglomerate-merger or diversification-merger. The first hypothesis is that conglomerate-mergers struggle to capitalize the benefits deriving from the synergies -if any, exhibiting weaker stock market reaction across the day of the announcement and inferior performance in the aftermath. The second hypothesis is that, due to company’s overvaluation, the post mergers company’s performance is not worth the premium price paid by the acquirer. Hence, we expect a negative relationship between the performance metrics and the additional price over the target’s book value, invested by the acquirer to finalize the deal Finally, we test if the lack of performance expected from the combination of the two organizations is limited by the lack of knowledge exhibited by the acquirer’s management board. Since the high tech sector evolves at fast pace, acquirer’s management lack in IT knowledge, skill, and experience make it incapable to sustain the development of the acquired company

Cultural narratives have long played a valuable role in mediating difficult and politically sensitive topics. Investing metaphorical tropes with cultural significance offers audiences the opportunity to consider new perspectives and prompt important discussions. One of these tropes that has become ever more prominent in the last decade is that of the vampire. This thesis is concerned with the questions of how the figure of the vampire is used in modern narratives, and how it has changed from previous incarnations, particularly in American narratives. The rise of the modern vampire coincides with the aftermath of 9/11 and it is this link that is primarily explored here. Through an examination of three texts, Being Human, True Blood and The Strain, these chapters construct an argument for the vampire as a key figure in post-9/11 narratives and imbued with a religious significance. Being Human establishes the difference between the UK and US interpretation of the figure through a direct comparison of an original series and its American remake. This highlights the religious aspect to the figure, along with reinforcing the Americanisation of the vampire, discussed in relation to the series. With this established, the argument moves on to True Blood, looking at patriotism, terrorism and the presentation of the ‘other’ onscreen in the series. Particularly, it posits the vampire in True Blood as being representative of the Muslim other, providing a unique method for discussing post-9/11 issues of religion and identity. The argument then moves on to looking at The Strain, which presents a more explicit link between vampires and 9/11, and argues for a need for narratives that do this. By looking at theoretical research on the issues raised in the texts, particularly those of trauma and faith, it highlights a change in perspectives. Ultimately, the exploration of these texts shows a valuable use of the vampire in working through the trauma of 9/11, a need for an American vampire and the importance of religion (in its many forms) in cultural narratives.

Resumo:
Functional literacy is difficult to achieve for the deaf population. Sixty percent of deaf high school students read at or below grade four, eight percent read at or above grade eight. The present study investigated two factors that may contribute to these individual differences in reading achievement in the deaf signing population: signed language comprehension skills and word recognition skills. In Study 1, 31 deaf adults (12 women and 19 men) between the ages of 17 and 54 years were categorized as either a Good Reader or Poor Reader to determine what factors would differentiate them. These groups were tested with a battery of background questionnaires, speech use and comprehension, communication, hearing, nonverbal IQ measures, three signed language measures, and two reading tests. Results showed that the Good and Poor Readers differed significantly on signed language comprehension skills. The Poor Readers (mean reading level grade 3.5) had poor sign language comprehension and the Good Readers (mean reading level grade 10.5) had good sign language comprehension.
In Study 2, the Good and Poor Readers tested in Study 1 and a hearing control group (6 women and 8 men) were tested on three lexical decision tasks. Two tasks tested use of phonology in word recognition (spelling-sound correspondence, pseudohomophone tasks) and a third task tested use of sign lexical knowledge (signability task). Across all tasks, the deaf Good Readers were as fast and as accurate as the Hearing Readers, whereas the Poor Readers were slower and made more errors than the other groups. The Poor Readers displayed similar patterns of performance to the Good Readers on the spelling-sound and pseudohomophone tasks. Neither deaf group showed much evidence of using phonological processing whereas the hearing control group did. The Poor Readers showed evidence of using sign lexical knowledge on the signability task.
These results together suggest that underdeveloped signed language skills may be a more important factor in the low reading levels of the deaf signing population than word recognition skills.

Resumo:
My dissertation traces the formation and growth of the reader of the Bengali novel in nineteenth century Bengal through a close study of the writings by Bankimchandra Chattopadhyay that comment on—and respond to—both the reader and the newly emergent genre of the Bengali novel. In particular, I focus on the following texts: two novels written by Bankim, Durgeśnandinī (The Lady of the Castle) (1865) and Bishabṛksha (The Poison Tree) (1872), literary essays published in nineteenth century Bengali periodicals, personal letters written by Bankim and his contemporaries, and reviews of the novels, often written and published anonymously. I suggest that by examining the reader of the Bengali novel it becomes possible to understand how the individual Bengali negotiates the changes occurring in nineteenth century Bengal—an era in which traditional beliefs collide with the intellectual and technological innovations brought on by colonial modernity. As my dissertation shows colonialism is far from being a disembodied institution operating at the level of governments and ideologies. Instead, it becomes evident that with the novel, colonial modernity enters the Bengali home in the form of changing moral paradigms. What the Bengali reader chooses to read, and how she performs her reading come to have a real import in her quotidian life. The three sites of reading I examine—the reader as a textual event in the novels, the reader as imagined in the literary essays, and the anthropological reader writing and responding to the reviews of the novels—revitalises the overdetermined field of the postcolonial novel by shifting the focus from the novel as a stable literary object being consumed by a relatively passive reader, to an active reader whose reading practice shapes both the genre and the subject reading it.

Resumo:
Currently, the great monotheistic religions –Judaism, Christianity and Islam– may seem anachronic. Judging from their principles and rituals, they appear to belong to the Middle Ages. This seems to be confirmed by a brief consideration of the history of Western science, certainly marked by first philosophy, and by its division into its three periods: ancient, medieval and modern. The One, recognized by Plotinus as the necessary condition of all multiplicity, and which religions identify with God, may be considered the principle of medieval thought. Alongside Descartes, modernity replaced this principle, and by the end of this period Nietzsche claimed that God is dead! God remains dead! We have killed him!” But, is God dead? If the Modern Age, which started with Nietzsche, has killed God, does it mean that monotheistic religions have also been deprived of life and vitality? Or do they continue to live thanks to a free and self-determined assent to a living God that can be thought in relation to the world and to men and women?

Darlington, Bronwyn. "One good deed deserves another: How moral identity and positive affect mediate the effect of costliness on pro-social consumer behaviour". Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/19739.

Resumo:
Understanding pro-social behaviour in the context of consumer behaviour is of theoretical and increasingly, managerial interest. While much research to date has focused on one-off consumer decisions, recent research is beginning to explore potential mediators of consistency or moral licensing behaviour in sequential consumer choices. Building on previous research in both psychology and economics, I examine how the costliness of initial prosocial behaviour can influence subsequent prosocial behaviour. I contribute to current knowledge of the effect of costliness on prosocial behaviour by showing that a prosocial behaviour (e.g., donation) that is perceived as costly (vs. not costly) increases a subsequent prosocial behaviour. I hypothesise that positive affect is an additional mediating mechanism. In a series of four experimental studies (and two additional studies in the appendix), this thesis replicates and extend prior research and demonstrates that this ‘moral consistency’ effect is mediated by moral identity and positive affect.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the distribution, forms, and function(s) of iron amulets deposited in the late Iron Age gravefields of Lovö, with the goal of ascertaining how (and so far as possible why) these objects were utilized in rituals carried out during and after burials. Particular emphasis is given to re-interpreting the largest group of iron amulets, the iron amulet rings, in a more relational and practice-focused way than has heretofore been attempted. By framing burial analyses, questions of typology, and evidence of ritualized actions in comparison with what is known of other cult sites in Mälardalen specifically– and theorized about the cognitive landscape(s) of late Iron Age Scandinavia generally– a picture of iron amulets as inscribed objects made to act as catalytic, protective, and mediating agents is brought to light.

This thesis starts by an analysis of backward stochastic differential equations (BSDEs) with jumps driven by random measures possibly of infinite activity with time-inhomogeneous compensators. Under concrete conditions that are easy to verify in applications, we prove existence, uniqueness and comparison results for bounded solutions for a class of generators that are not required to be globally Lipschitz in the jump integrand. The rest of the thesis deals with robust valuation and hedging in incomplete markets. The focus is on the no-good-deal approach, which computes good-deal valuation bounds by using only a subset of the risk-neutral measures with economic meaning (e.g. bounds on instantaneous Sharpe ratios, optimal growth rates, or expected utilities). Throughout we study a notion of good-deal hedging consisting in minimizing some dynamic risk measures that allow for optimal risk sharing with the market. Hedging is shown to be at least mean-self-financing in that hedging errors satisfy a supermartingale property under suitable valuation measures. We derive constructive results on good-deal valuation and hedging in a jump framework using BSDEs with jumps, as well as in a Brownian setting with drift uncertainty using classical BSDEs and with volatility uncertainty using second-order BSDEs. We provide new examples which are particularly relevant for actuarial and financial applications. Under ambiguity about the real-world measure, a worst-case approach under multiple reference priors leads to good-deal hedging that is robust w.r.t. uncertainty in that it is at least mean-self-financing uniformly over all priors. This yields that good-deal hedging is equivalent to risk-minimization if drift uncertainty is sufficiently large.

This study is a comparative study based on how Fredrich Nietzsche and his God is dead may be significant for how developers and consumers perceive cookies in the browser. The goal of the study is that through Fredrich Nietzsche's eyes examine how cookies death affect the browser and with that knowledge problematize the use of cookies in webapplications. The study is based on the question: How are cookies perceived as a being with power at its disposal? By looking at how cookies are currently being used for purposes other than the basic idea they once had, it is possible to see how cookies reliability today is doubtful. Cookies that have long dominated the development of applications on the Internet appears today in many forums as a threat to privacy and security. Cookies that were once a symbol of security and robust applications is undergoing a change and therefore can no longer serve as a meaningful vehicle for the whole world of Internet users. The study demonstrates that no pro or con arguments can be made that alone will tell if we are to retain cookies or not. However, God is dead serve as an approach to consider cookies as a holder of power because the developers as well as consumers are affected by the death of cookies.

A historiografia do teatro brasileiro, pouco a pouco, vem ganhando novos contornos e novas análises.

Abstract : Historically and culturally, heavier bodies have been considered a synonym of beauty, wealth and even health. More recently, despite the obesifying nature of neoliberal societies, which provide us with a wide variety of industrialized/fast/processed food, but also requires that we lead a more sedentary life, the thin self-regulating individual is of high value. Public authorities, such as governments, health institutions and medical practitioners, reflect society?s beliefs by endorsing the connection between fatness and unhealthiness. The objective of this study is to analyze Brazilian and European Union laws regarding overweight and obesity in order to understand how these two concepts and the relation between weight and health are construed through discourse. In order to do that, I rely on Critical Discourse Analysis and the Legitimation in Discourse framework proposed by Van Leeuwen (2007). The results revealed that the Brazilian legislation does not clearly define obesity and, by doing so, makes it a vague term, leaving room for discursive, social and cultural interpretations, rather than relying on biological, medical and socio-economic explanations. The analysis also indicates that the approach of the European Union legal system towards obesity is focused on eating habits and physical activity, that is, on prevention, while the Brazilian legal system addresses obesity primarily in terms of diagnosis and treatment . Finally, the study revealed that what is normalized nowadays is the notion that obesity is the result of the individuals' choices, of bad eating habits and sedentary and inactive lifestyles. Moreover, the authorities choose to ignore other factors that are harmful to health and, instead, rely on instructing individuals to monitor their eating, exercising and living habits.

Good grapes are required to make good wine. Quality wines start in quality vineyards. Vineyard design, installation, and operation, including site location, trellis options, vine selection, and canopy management, along with when to harvest are discussed. While winemaking is the final phase in the pursuit of the winemaker's passion, it is but a simple formula. The beginning of a good wine is in a good vineyard. This study includes a financial projection for a 10-acre vineyard as well as for starting an onsite, complementary sized winery. Even though many small-to-medium vineyards-to-wineries have started over the last decade, the reason to enter into this type of business is not profit, but passion. Profits are relatively small for the time and labor investment, but the unique wine creations that result are amazing, for the winemaker and the one who enjoys the result.

The productive chain of the sugar-energy sector is of great importance to the development of the country, reaching almost 2% of PIB. An important contribution of the sugar-energy sector to the current Brazilian economy is relative to the production of renewable energy. In Brazil\'s primary energy matrix, renewable energy accounts for an important 46.9% share compared to 6.1% that the OCDE countries consume, and is even larger than the share of renewable energy consumed in the world (13.2%). Of the 46.9% of Brazilian energy consumed, 18.8% is derived from sugarcane, followed by 13.9% hydroelectric power and 10.2% coal. The increase in technical efficiency is a relevant factor for the competitiveness of the sector and, although Brazil occupies a prominent position in the production of bioenergy, the sugar and ethanol mills have been facing a crisis culminating with a retraction of the production and the closing of several industrial plants. Industrial technical efficiency is the main performance indicator of a sugar and ethanol plant, and can be translated as the percentage of cane sugar that is recovered and processed into sugar, ethanol and other products. Thus, given the current crisis of the sector, increased competition and optimization of productivity, productive units need to increase their efficiency in relation to the use of inputs. In order to contribute to the improvement of the efficiency and competitiveness of the sugar and ethanol plants, the general objective of this thesis was to propose a good operating practice that will contribute to increase the technical efficiency of the plants. To that end, the methodological procedures used involved a quantitative and qualitative approach. In the first step, the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) technique was used, together with the quintile analysis and truncated multilinear regression, so that it was possible to perform an analysis of the information from the database used and provided by a company in the region of Piracicaba. In a second moment, a case study was carried out at a mill considered efficient in the region of Ribeirão Preto, state of São Paulo, and an interview with two experts on sugar and ethanol production processes aimed at understanding why certain plants are more efficient than others. Finally, the information from both stages was cross-referenced and analyzed, leading to the proposal of good operational practices, which are likely to increase technical efficiency and consequently increase competitiveness in the sugar and ethanol plants.

Dead languages present a case where the original language community no longer exists. This results in a language for which the evidence is limited by the paucity of surviving texts and in which no new linguistic uses can be generated. Ludwig Wittgenstein argued that the meaning of language is simply its use by a language community. On this view a dead language is coextensive with the existing corpus, with the linguistic dynamic provided by the community of readers. Donald Davidson argued that the meaning of language is not conventional, but rather is discovered in a dynamic process of â passing theoriesâ generated by the speaker and listener. On this view a dead language is incomplete, because such dynamic theories can only be negotiated by participating in a living language community and are thus not captured by the extant corpus. We agree with Davidsonâ s view of theories of meaning and conclude that our interpretations of dead languages will suffer epistemological underdetermination that removes any guarantee that they reflect the meanings as heard by the original language community.

Resumo:
This thesis is about a journey that begins as an investigation into "good citizenship", develops into an analysis of the meaning of "good", and then evolves into an exploration of issuesc oncernedw ith the nature of "good research". In essence,t he thesis can be split into two interlinked parts. Both "halves" serve a dual purpose in that they represent findings and data in the journey. The first "half' explores the theme of "good citizenship" within the context of the cross-curricular themes. It adds to our understanding of these issues by demystifying the ideological tensions existing within and between guidance documentation suggested by the National Curriculum Council to deliver the "whole curriculum" for English and Welsh schools after the 1988 Education Reform Act. These findings later serve as data in providing a context from which to reinterpret and advance our understanding of "good research". The epiphany in this journey occured when the meaning of "good" in "GOOD citizenship" was placed under scrutiny. In discovering that "good" has a multifarious meaning, which is not reducible to a single definition, the substantive focus of the thesis changed. This change is reflected in the upper and lower case lettering displayed within the title. By deemphasising the importance of "good" in "good RESEARCH", a paradigmatic shift in thinking is symbolized. The second "half' of this thesis investigates the nature of "good research" and makes two contributions to our knowledge of interpretive research. Using three perspectives of a single set of data as a working apparatus, the philosophy of Gadamerian (1979) hermeneutics is explored and taken beyond our current understanding. Part of this exploration involves applying the criteria of authenticity and coherence to the research. However, in discovering the inadequacy of these predetermined guidelines, the idea of situationally derived criteria is developed. Finally, it is suggested that the criteria for judging the quality of research can never be determined in advance of meaning coming into being. Instead, such criteria are contextually bound and can only be seen as post-hoc rational guidelines.
