ARTE, BENEFICENZA ED ELITE NELL'ETRURIA ROMANA. FRAMMENTI DI RILIEVI FUNERARI DA SATURNIAQuesto articolo discute due frammenti di scultura, uno di una scena di banchetto e l'altro rappresentante un gladiatore, attualmente localizzati nella moderna città – e precedente colonia romana – di Saturnia. I frammenti provengono da una grande villa tardo repubblicana/alto imperiale situata nei dintorni della città. L'evidenza epigrafica suggerisce che questa villa potrebbe essere appartenuta ad una famiglia locale (probabilmente di decurioni), i Varii. La scultura potrebbe derivare dalla tomba monumentale di un membro di quella famiglia. Sia banchetti che gladiatori sono comunemente rappresentati su monumenti funerari romani, e rappresentano anche una componente comune di opere civiche di beneficenza. Il materiale epigrafico di Saturnia rappresenta un'importante evidenza di euergetismo nel principato, e la scultura funeraria proviene da quel contesto culturale. L'evidenza di euergetismo a Saturnia fa riferimento alia continua stretta relazione fra proprietari terrieri locali e la vita civica, per il tramite del principato. Ciò è in contrasto con quanta avveniva nella bassa valle dell'Albegna, dove, fin dai tempi di Augusto, i proprietari che non risiedono nelle sue terre avevano mostrato scarsa partecipazione alia vita civica.

Both academic and popular culture discourses are inhabited by statements that “pathologize” the ways Roma remember the Holocaust and other traumatic events. Against these claims, this article’s main aim is to explore contemporary artistic production from Austria which fosters “Roma will to memory” within an assemblage of political practices and discourses. To this end, I will explore Marika Schmiedt’s body of artistic memory work from 1999 to 2015, relying on a critical visual approach. The impetus for this exploration is Slawomir Kapralski’s assertion that the actual cases of active remembering and commemoration among Roma and Sinti would render the traditional approach to Roma as “people without memory and history” inaccurate. As this case study shows, there is no such a thing as “Roma indifference to recollection,” but rather, the testimony about the traumatic past is silenced or obstructed by the lack of the infrastructure, the bureaucracy of the archives, and the strategic forgetting politics.

COSA TARDO ROMANO E MEDIEVALE I: L'ARCE E LA STRUTTURA NELLA PARTE NORD-ORIENTALE DELLA CITTAL'obiettivo degli scavi è di ricontrollare e datare l'insediamento post-romano a Cosa alla luce dei recenti studi sulla ceramica tardo-romana e medievale. Due aree sono state esplorate sull'Arce: la prima a nord della porta principale e la seconda a ovest del tempio D. Infine, una torre posta al di sopra delle mura romane nella parte nord-orientale dell città è stata parzialmente messa in luce.Sull'Arce si può ricostruire un'occupazione di epoca Bizantina: l'insieme comprendeva quartieri di abitazione all'interno del tempio, con un granaio, un fienile e stalle adiacenti. Si tratta probabilmente di una mansio, fortificata dopo un incendio nel VI secolo. Invece, la torre scavata nella zona nord-est della città romana testimonia una presenza medievale. Si tratta di una struttura tondeggiante irregolare che si appoggia alle mura romane guardando il Portus Cosanus. Potrebbe essere interpretata come base per una catapulta, datata verso l'inizio del XIV secolo.

Die sieben von Hellen beschriebenen Anomaloninae werden revidiert. Valide Arten sind Erigorgus romani (Hellen, 1926), Agrypon [nec Atrometoides] nigerrimum (Hellen, 1949), Barylypa helleni Schnee, 1989 [= Agrypon (Barylypa) rossicum Hellen, 1950 praokkupiert durch Barylypa rossicum Meyer, 1935], und Agrypon brachycerum Hellen, 1950. Habronyx scutellatus, Hellen, 1926 ist syn. nov. von Agrypon flaveolatum (Gravenhorst, 1829), Anomalon boreale Hellen, 1926 von Erigorgus melanobatus (Gravenhorst, 1829) und Agrypon (Labrorychus) flaviventris Hellen, 1950 von Barylypa rubricator (Szepligeti, 1899). Erigorgus lapponicus (Thomson, 1892) wird als eigenstandige Art und nicht mehr als Synonym von E. cerinops (Gravenhorst, 1829) angesehen. Zwei neue Arten aus der Agrypon anxium-Gruppe werden beschrieben: Agrypon hinzi spec. nov. aus Deutschland, Finnland, Grosbritannien, Osterreich, Russland und Schweden sowie Agrypon capitatum spec. nov. aus Finnland. Erstmals wird die bisher nur aus der Ostpalaarktis bekannte Art Aphanistes wadai Uchida, 1958 aus Finnland und Deutschland nachgewiesen. Aphanistes iwatai Uchida, 1958 ist ein neues Synonym von A. wadai. Ein Bestimmungsschlussel ermoglicht die Determination der westpalaarktischen Aphanistes-Arten. Faunistische und biologische Daten werden mitgeteilt. Wirtsnachweise wurden nach Moglichkeit uberpruft. Eine aktualisierte Checklist der 44 finnischen Anomaloninae wird gegeben.

Resumo:
The Roma are a group of populations with a common origin that share the Romani identity and cultural heritage. Their genetic history has been inferred through multiple studies based on uniparental and autosomal markers, and current genomic data have provided novel insights into their genetic background. This review was prompted by two factors: (i) new developments to estimate the genetic structure of the Roma at a fine-scale resolution have precisely identified the ancestral components and traced migrations that were previously documented only in historical sources, clarifying and solving debates on the origins and the diaspora of the Roma; (ii) while there has been an effort to review the health determinants of the Roma, the increasing literature on their population genetics has not been subjected to a dedicated review in the last two decades. We believe that a summary on the state of the art will benefit both the public and scholars that are approaching the subject.

ItalianoNel corso di un’asta di antichità della casa Bonham’s tenutasi a Londra il 30 novembre del 2016 sono riapparsi alcuni cinerari romani: due urne e un altare dei quali si ignorava la collocazione da quando furono alienati dalla collezione di Lowther Castle nel 1947. Gli oggetti, tutti di provenienza urbana, hanno viaggiato per l’Europa attraversando diverse collezioni private rimanendo perciò lontani dal grande pubblico e dalle indagini storico-artistiche. La conseguente estrema penuria di letteratura su questi manufatti ha reso opportuna la realizzazione di questa nota, con la quale si vuole ricostruire la provenienza degli oggetti, individuarne il momento della produzione sulla scorta delle loro caratteristiche stilistiche e formali cogliendo l’occasione per affrontare alcune tematiche specifiche dell’iconografia funeraria romana. EnglishDuring an auction of antiquities held by Bonham's in London on November 30, 2016, some Roman cineraries reappeared: two urns and an altar, which were believed lost after they were alienated from the Lowther Castle collection in 1947. The objects, all of urban origin, traveled across Europe through various private collections, thus far away from the public and historical-artistic investigations. The extreme shortage of literature on these three artifacts leaded to the writing of this note which objective is to reconstruct the provenance of the cineraries, to identify the time of production by analyzing their stylistic and formal features while facing some specific themes of Roman funerary iconography. EspañolDurante una subasta de antigüedades celebrada por Bonham's en Londres el 30 de noviembre de 2016, reaparecieron algunos cinerarios romanos: dos urnas y un altar lo que se creían perdidos después de haber sido alienados de la colección de Lowther Castle en 1947. Los objetos, todos de origen urbana, viajaron a través de Europa pasando por varias colecciones privadas, lejos de el público y de la investigación histórico-artística. La extrema escasez de literatura sobre estos tres artefactos condujo a la redacción de esta nota cuyo objetivo es reconstruir la procedencia de los cinerarios, identificar el tiempo de producción analizando sus rasgos estilísticos y formales mientras se enfrenta a algunos temas específicos de la iconografía funeraria romana. The paper discusses the issue of the relationship between lifestyle and mental development. With the Lyuli (Central Asian Romani people) children as an example, I explore the impacts of the unsettled way of life on the development of the attitude towards symmetry and asymmetry in childhood. A comparative analysis of the primary school-aged Lyuli children (n=27) and their peers (n=30) studying at comprehensive schools that was conducted using the Barron-Welsh Art Scale suggests it is highly probable that the lifestyle affects the development of the individual’s sense of symmetry. The outcomes show that the unsettled way of life of the Lyuli does not promote unilaterally positive or negative attitude towards symmetry and asymmetry. However, the study revealed that it is far more common for the Lyuli children as compared to their peers from schools to develop attitudes to symmetry or its violation in the environment that are identical in modality. Basing on these facts, I argue that the unsettled way of living has a negative impact upon the child’s ability to develop a differentiated attitude in displaying the sense of symmetry.

The rock-hewn church Abuna Yemata Guh, situated in the Gheralta Mountains of the Ethiopian Tigray region, houses one of the best preserved and least studied wall paintings of medieval Ethiopia. The pictorial program is dated to the second half of 15th century, by stylistic and iconographic characteristics. In fact, no well-proved date has been suggested so far. This research seeks to bridge the existing scholarly gap by conducting a comprehensive analysis of the iconographic and stylistic attributes of the paintings. It also considers the historical backdrop of the church, identifying key conduits of cultural influence. Furthermore, the study incorporates a scientific examination of the pigments employed in the paintings of Abuna Yemata Guh, comparing them with those found in other Ethiopian churches. The artistic motifs found within the paintings of Abuna Yemata Guh indicate an amalgamation of influences, notably drawing from Osman and Goan Christian art traditions. Additionally, traces of the iconographic style seen in the Roman icon Salus populi romani are evident, with a copy of this icon only arriving in Ethiopia after the 1570s. Consequently, the most plausible timeframe for the execution of the wall paintings falls within the latter part of the 16th c.

Among the treasures of the Montana Museum of Art and Culture is a lovely and elaborate work of art entitled Wars of the Romani, a Flemish tapestry woven in the last third of the 16th century. It is a large weaving, 10 x 15, portraying two armies intertwined in merciless combat. The specific subject matter of Wars of the Romani is unknown, but a standard displaying the Roman eagle held aloft in the background indicates the presence of the Roman legions. The tapestry displays rushing horsemen mounted on vigorous horses, marching spearmen, and supine warriors, imagery common to Flemish battle tapestries from the last quarter of the sixteenth century. Framing the battle scene is a grotesque style border composed of gods placed within whimsical filigree architectural pavilions interwoven with fanciful decoration and mythical beasts. Wars of the Romanis Mannerist battle scene offers a view into the pictorial trends of the late Renaissance and displays the energy of the tumultuous era in which it was woven.

Les recherches portant sur les fora provinciaux effectuées au cours des dernières décennies ont permis de redéfinir un certain nombre de leurs caractéristiques. L’étude du décor de ces centres civiques dans sa globalité constitue alors une approche susceptible d’apporter une meilleure compréhension de ces espaces. Cette première approche du sujet a pour objectif d’aborder la question du dialogue entre les images présentes sur le forum et leurs contextes. Le décor figuratif permet de définir les principales thématiques, qui sont souvent complétées par des décors non figuratifs, et qui participent à la diffusion de l’idéologie impériale. Ce décor doit ensuite être contextualisé, afin d’en comprendre la conception, et d’aborder la question de sa réception par le spectateur<br>Over the last few decades, studies on provincial fora defined some of their characteristics. A global approach of their decor can bring about a better understanding of these spaces. The link between the images and their contexts will be examined. The study of the images will be associated with the study of non iconographical elements of the decor in order to define the main themes represented on the fora. La conception du « roman total » proposé par Romain Gary met fin au « chef d’œuvre ». Traversant « le siècle des ténèbres », Romain Gary trouve une part de responsabilité de l’art et de l’artiste dans l’impuissance de la culture face à l’horreur existante. Pourtant, bien qu’il mette l’accent sur la fonction sociale de l’art, Romain Gary n’adhère pas à l’art engagé, ni au roman réaliste ou au Nouveau roman. Il ne cherche pas à imposer ses idées au lecteur, mais veut lui ouvrir un espace de liberté. L’art doit être une jouissance pour qu’il finisse par devenir une force éthique. Il amène une prise de conscience de ce qui manque à la réalité. L’esthétique garyenne consiste à rendre au lecteur son autonomie de pensée. Nombre de ses personnages incarnent la figure de l’artiste sous différentes formes provocatrices : picaro, dandy, clown, etc. Pour Romain Gary, créer, c’est jouir et la jouissance est une révolte métaphysique contre la condition de la vie et contre la souffrance. Les artistes dans ses romans figurent bien ceux qui mènent cette lutte. Transgresseurs des valeurs et des ordres établis, les artistes chez l’auteur tiennent à se libérer de la réalité. Cette libération s’effectue d’une part à travers la création d’un monde imaginaire, d’autre part à travers le dépassement de soi ou la création de soi. Transformant leur vie comme une œuvre de leur imagination, les artistes garyens témoignent d’une identité multiple et en « devenir »<br>Néant

Le corpus des calendriers sculptes romans en France qui fait l'objet de la thèse est constituée de 33 cycles, répartis dans 32 monuments. Chaque calendrier fait l'objet d'une notice ou sont exposes les principaux problèmes propres à chacun, et où chaque scène est décrite minutieusement et identifiée (volume II). L'étude de ce corpus (volume I) s'articule en quatre points et a conduit aux conclusions suivantes. La situation tant dans l'espace que dans le temps des calendriers est très groupée : la majeure partie est implantée dans un croissant allant des landes au bourgogne et a été sculptée entre 1140-1160. Dans le monument, la situation privilégiée des calendriers (façade ouest, porte principale, voussure extérieure), qui a permis de dégager une "formule type architecturale", n'est pas sans incidence sur le rôle du thème dans l'église comme facteur d'ordre à la fois spatial et temporel. Sur le plan iconographique, le double phénomène de fixité et de variation a également permis de mettre en évidence une "formule type iconographique", et de faire la part entre les thèmes obliges et les variantes régionales ou individuelles. Enfin, est abordée la question de la valeur documentaire des calendriers sculptes, des œuvres d'art qui n'ont pas été conçues pour rendre témoignage d'une réalité disparue, et dont la dimension esthétique doit absolument être prise en compte par l'historien. L'analyse des formes et des thèmes renvoie à une observation de la réalité à la fois très fine et très sélective. Cette finesse et cette sélectivité du sculpteur confèrent à l'image non seulement une valeur documentaire indéniable sur la civilisation matérielle du XIIe siècle, mais aussi une dimension spirituelle. Détail réaliste et stylisation parfois extrême, combines, servent de révélateur a l'expression d'un idéal : idéal fondamentalement optimiste du bien-être, d'un ordre social et religieux reposant sur un ordre économique et politique<br>The corpus of sculpted Romanesque calendar in France which forms the object of the thesis constitutes 33 cycles, spread over 32 monuments. Each calendar receives an individual notice in which are exposed the principal problems of each, and where every scene is meticulously described and identified (volume II). The study of this corpus revolts around four points (volume I). The situation of the calendar in terms of space as much as time is grouped: the majority is implanted in a crescent spreading from lands region to burgundy and was carved between 1140-1160. In the building, the privileged position of the calendars (west facade, door way, exterior archcurves), which has helped to define a "modal architectural formula" has not been without impact on the role of theme in the church as a factor of order both spatial and in time. From the iconographical point of view, the double phenomenon of steadiness and variation has also helped to reveal a "modal iconographical formula", and mark a difference between obligatory themes and regional or individual variants. Last of all, the question is aborded as to the documentary value of sculpted calendars, works of art which were not conceived in order to capture a reality hitherto disappeared and whose aesthetic aspect must certainly be taken into consideration by the historian. The analysis of forms and themes leads to an observation of reality at the same time very fine and selective. This delicacy and selectivity within the sculptor art gives not only an undeniable documentary value to the image of material twelfth century civilization, but also a spiritual dimension. Author of almost one hundred libretti for opera composers of the first half of the 18th century, Felice Romani has perfected a poetry technique that allows a successful combination of music and verse, thus becoming the favourite librettist of the belcanto authors Donizetti and Bellini. His stories are not original, but he masters the ability to adapt his sources in a light yet potent poetry with a strong impact upon the audience. Anna Bolena, put into music by Gaetano Donizetti, presents the tragic story of Henry VIII�s second wife. The sources of the libretto are generally considered to be two almost forgotten tragedies: Anna Bolena by Alessandro Pepoli (Venice, 1788) and Enrico VIII ossia Anna Bolena by Giovanni Pindemonte (Torino, 1816), actually an adaptation of Marie Joseph de Chenier�s tragedy, Henri VIII (1791). After carrying out a thorough analysis of the three texts, we noticed that Romani�s plot is only partially based on the earlier tragedies while some elements he introduces suggest that he must have had other sources as well. At the same time, he surpasses his predecessors in the construction of the characters, giving them psychological depth. As a result, we can conclude that Romani is only partially tributary to the two sources and succeeds in proposing a personal view on the subject he elaborates for Donizetti.

Teacher, conductor, Byzantine musicologist, Gheorghe C. Ionescu (1920- 1999) devoted the last years of his life to researching the history of Romanian Byzantine music and published in specialized journals several comprehensive papers that address various topics and bring back in focus personalities of the past. Due to his solid musical and theological training, guided by prestigious teachers from the interwar period, the distinguished musician had a rich artistic and cultural contribution to the second half of the previous century. The change of the political regime in Romania allowed him to return to the pursuits of his adolescence and youth and to continue his research of Orthodox church music in Romania. Along with his papers at various scientific events and the published studies, his tireless work materialized, soon after 1989, in the writing of a lexicon dedicated exclusively to those who had researched Romanian Byzantine music, in 1997. It was followed by a chronological dictionary, the foreword of which was written by the academician Virgil Cândea, who appreciated the importance of the book and the quality of Teacher Ionescu’s work. Entitled Muzica bizantină în România [Byzantine Music in Romania], the book appeared posthumously, through the care of his family, in 2003. Although the centenary of his birth passed almost unnoticed, both productions are valuable working tools for all those who will continue to value Orthodox church music in our country. One more reason to evoke this personality who put a lot of passion in illustrating the richness and beauty of music sung in Romanian churches, two decades after the book was printed.

In this article, the author refers to one of the elite representatives of Romanian photographic art, Joseph Berman, a distinguished personality in the field of visual documentation, who contributed enormously to the development of ethnological field research. From a theoretical and practical perspective, a visual image immortalizes a moment in space and time, facilitating the recourse to the information it holds whenever needed. The photography can communicate to you several types of information, on the one hand, about the personality of the one who made this immortalization, revealing details about the preferences and skill of the master photographer, and on the other hand, it expresses realities, historical, social, ethnographic details of eternal temporal moments and habitats, motivating us to become critical consumers of visual images. For these reasons, the rhetoric of the image (Roland Barthes) becomes emblematic for ethnological research. Researchers in the field of Romanian ethnological photography delimit the period of flourishing (development) of visual documentation from the first half of the 20th century into two segments, the first up to Joseph Berman and the second – after him. With its affirmation in the photographic field, ethnological documentation took on color, becoming „alive”, loaded with deep meaning. The famous sociologist Dimitrie Gusti, appreciating his talent, called him: „co-author of the image of the Romanian village and peasant” and, rightly, did not accept a monographic campaign through the villages of Romania without Berman’s skill and talent, considering any other type of ethnological research compromised from the start.

Quando o prédio da basílica foi erigido pelo epíscopo Libério (352-66), atribuiu-se a ela o nome de Sancta Maria ad Nives, pelo fato de estar nevando no início das obras. Restou a Sixto III (432 e 440), bispo de Roma, apenas a decoração interna e a inauguração da edificação, o qual foi dedicado em honra a Maria.

In Romania, the DL system is relatively a new system of education, implemented officially 15 years ago. This was a big step forward aiming to modernize the traditional education. The key issue was to approve the the legislation which defines this type of education and the quality standards that higher education institutions are obliged to fulfil. As a result, public and private Romania universities have implemented DL study programs which are accredited by the ARACIS - the Romanian Agency for Quality Assurance in Hicher Education. We would like to highlight that the diplomas obtained through DL studu programs are equivalent with the diplomas obtained through traditional on-campus education. Nowadays, the world wide trends in education reveal an spectacular increase in online education. Are we affraid to promote the online education in Romania? Are we prepared, from pedagogical and technical point of view, to design, implement and manage the online system of education in Romania? The clear reply of the authors to this questions is: "YES, we the DL practitioners in Romania, we are well prepared for online learning!". In the first part of this article the author will synthesize her experience as DL practitioner within the Department CREDITS for DL, within University of Bucharest. The author will identify "lessons" that she has learned as managing director of this department, during the past 15 years. In the second part of the article, the author will assess the complexity of the transition from the current RO-DL system to a new system similar with online (in Europe and USA). Also, such an initiative is correlated with strategic educational programs and with the CE's initiatives. The article will include the conclusions stating that, we need a small step forward to design and implement online study programs in Romania; this step is small by comparison with implementation of DL-RO. There is still a big problem to this subject: the decision makers!

While the knowledge on immigrants’ integration consolidated through the last 50 years, the Roma studies and the research on the Roma inclusion seems at the beginning. The purpose of this research was to assess if and to what extent the Swiss experience in immigrants’ integration may inspire an efficient approach to Roma inclusion in the Romanian society. After highlighting conceptual vagueness, resemblance and difference in the overall social status of Romanian Roma and immigrants in Switzerland and official approaches to the integration or inclusion of each, the research concludes that the Romanian policy on Roma inclusion presumably can be better anchored in the integration conceptual framework and benefit from immigrants’ integration experience. The Romanian choice for framing its Roma policy as ‘inclusion’ rather than for ‘integration’ may be appropriate as it applies to a historic minority of citizens needing social justice. The use of an immigration integration policy as model for a Roma inclusion strategy is limited due to the stronger legit-imation of historic minorities for shared-ownership of public decision-making. That is the Swiss example of immigrants’ integration could only serve Romania as a minimum standard for its Roma inclusion strategy. It can benefit from the Swiss experience on immigrant's integration policy in terms of conception, coordination, monitoring and transparency may be beneficial, while the Roma political participation may find inspiration from the Swiss linguistic communities’ participatory mechanisms. The on-going reciprocal learning process connecting academia and public authorities able to transform science into action and experience in knowledge may inspire the Romanian authorities.

Ukraine recognizes Romanian and Moldovan as distinct minority languages, even though the official language of the Republic of Moldova is Romanian. This distinction between Romanian and Moldovan is not merely a symbolic matter, it has practical, negative consequences for members of the minority communities concerned. Since the 1990s, Ukrainian-Romanian relations have been affected by mutual distrust rooted in historical resentments, stereotypes, and prejudice at the level of both political elites and the general public. Moldova and Ukraine have experienced ups and downs in their bilateral relations due to the complex geopolitical context and growing Russian interference. The ongoing Russian war against Ukraine has had a strong impact on Moldova and Romania as well as on their kin minority communities in Ukraine. This war marks a turning point in history. It has caused tectonic shifts in global affairs, in the Euro-Atlantic community, and in national politics and interstate relations. Ukraine, Romania, and Moldova can turn the ongoing crisis into an opportunity to reset their (dysfunctional) bilateral relations. It is high time for a paradigm shift towards a new, enhanced triadic partnership which is able to ensure an effective system of minority protection.

In Sweden, the Roma have the right to contribute to and influence policy measures that affect them. Authorities often fulfil their obligation to include Roma through the so-called reference groups. The authors see several problems with this model. First, the reference groups are deprived of agency, as they are often not involved at early stages in the planning, but rather informed and consulted on ready-made decisions. Second, an emphasis is placed on “Romani organisations” when nominating and selecting representatives, which encourages rapid creation of new organisations with few members and activities, little transparency, and affected by gate-keeping as the power is kept between a few individuals. Last, the emphasis on linguistic and cultural competence deprives many individuals of influence and the possibility of being heard, especially those who have been subject to harsh assimilation.

The main recommendations of the panel report can be summarised under five key headings:  Scotland in the Roman world: Research into Roman Scotland requires an appreciation of the wider frontier and Empire-wide perspectives, and Scottish projects must be integrated into these wider, international debates. The rich data set and chronological control that Scotland has to offer can be used to inform broader understandings of the impact of Rome.  Changing worlds: Roman Scotland’s rich data set should be employed to contribute to wider theoretical perspectives on topics such as identity and ethnicity, and how these changed over time. What was the experience of daily life for the various peoples in Roman Scotland and how did interactions between incomers and local communities develop and change over the period in question, and, indeed, at and after its end?  Frontier Life: Questions still remain regarding the disposition and chronology of forts and forces, as well as the logistics of sustaining and supplying an army of conquest and occupation. Sites must be viewed as part of a wider, interlocking set of landscapes, and the study of movement over land and by sea incorporated within this. The Antonine Wall provides a continuing focus of research which would benefit from more comparison with frontier structures and regimes in other areas.  Multiple landscapes: Roman sites need to be seen in a broader landscape context, ‘looking beyond the fort’ and explored as nested and interlocking landscapes. This will allow exploration of frontier life and the changing worlds of the Roman period. To do justice to this resource requires two elements: o Development-control archaeology should look as standard at the hinterland of forts (up to c.1 km from the ‘core’), as sensitive areas and worthy of evaluation; examples such as Inveresk show the density of activity around such nodes. The interiors of camps should be extensively excavated as standard. o Integrated approaches to military landscapes are required, bringing in where appropriate topographical and aerial survey, LIDAR, geophysics, the use of stray and metal-detected finds, as well as fieldwalking and ultimately, excavation.  The Legacy of Rome: How did the longer term influence of the Romans, and their legacy, influence the formation, nature and organisation of the Pictish and other emergent kingdoms?

Peculiarities of translating romance novels are considered in the article. Examples from the novel by Kristan Higgins “Too good to be true” are given in order corresponding to their manifestation in the book. Special attention is given to the translation of realities. The main translation techniques used are transliteration and transcription, calquing, and combinations (concerning onomastic realities), descriptive translation and approximation (concerning everyday realities and associations). Besides, it is mentioned, that gender dimension is extremely pragmatically valid in the context of other stylistic and grammatical aspects of the text. The authors make a conclusion of dynamic changes in speech stereotypes towards blurring gender lines between masculine and feminine speech behavior. It is important to consider this fact when translating romance novels.

The memoirs of (post-) punk musician Viv Albertine address the issue of choice or lack thereof in romantic and family relationships. They depict a world in which choice of romantic partners appears normal if often unsuccessful, whereas choice within family relationships is restricted. It is self-evident that one cannot choose one’s blood relatives. However, amplified by Albertine’s scepticism towards any social relationships, her two memoirs represent ‘negative choice’ (Eva Illouz) in heterosexual romantic relationships and the complex ways in which negative choice can change family dynamics. In her memoirs, Albertine presents loneliness as the opposite of love which aligns with her model of choice, as it is preferable to live a lonely life over being bound up in love relationships, romantic or familial, which are harmful to one’s wellbeing. This article demonstrates how the ethos of early punk is translated into an uncompromising process of life writing which presents itself as faithfulness towards the individual’s core need for self-realisation and self-expression against the backdrop of failing romantic and familial relationships, severe physical and mental health problems, a self-diagnosis of autism and a patriarchal society.

The blog post discusses the linguistic and cultural peculiarities of Piedmont and the Aosta Valley, two regions that have historically straddled France and Italy. It provides a brief historical linguistic overview of the development of Gallo-Romance languages (French, Franco-Provençal, and Occitan) in these regions. The piece describes the Francophile and Francophone orientation of Piedmont throughout its history, as well as the belated introduction of Tuscan (Italian). It stresses the singularity of Piedmontese, and its close linguistic relation to neighbouring Gallo-Romance languages. Against this background, the text assesses the current state and vitality of Franco- and Gallo-Romance peripheries within the borders of Italy, and explains how such identities have evolved, been reshaped or become politicized. Primordialist and constructivist perspectives on national (and minority) identities are combined to better understand the development, decay, and reconfiguration of linguistic and cultural identities in Piedmont and the Aosta Valley.

This research report examines the experiences of Roma communities who have been displaced by the war in Ukraine. Roma in Ukraine and in Europe have historically faced discrimination and prejudice due to widely held stereotypes among the non-Roma majority. This report highlights how Roma internally displaced persons and refugees are discriminated against, and how, whereas many Ukrainian refugees have been welcomed with open arms in European countries, the same welcome has not been extended to Roma. The report also highlights the role of Roma-led organizations in supporting displaced Roma and reinvigorating the fight for the rights of Roma communities.

Conflicts between humans and birds likely have existed since agricultural practices began. Paintings from ancient Greek, Egyptian, and Roman civilizations depict birds attacking crops. In Great Britain, recording of efforts at reducing bird damage began in the 1400s, with books on bird control written in the 1600s. Even so, the problem persists. Avian damage to crops remains an issue today, but we also are concerned with damage to homes, businesses, and aircraft, and the possibility of disease transmission from birds to humans or livestock. Bird dispersal techniques are a vital part of safely and efficiently reducing bird conflicts with humans. The bird must perceive a technique as a threat if it is to be effective. No single technique can solve all bird conflicts, but an integrated use of multiple techniques, each enhancing the other, generally provides relief.
