Texto completo da fonteThis study presents an assessment of causal and explicative syntactic structures and their respective correspondence with the narrative and argumentative modes of text organization, evidencing the frequency of such constructions in the following textual genres: news, chronicle, editorial and students writing in college entrance exams (vestibular). For data gathering, we have analyzed 400 (four hundred) texts, 100 (one hundred) of each aforementioned genres. A comparison is made with connectives which, according to traditional educational practices, represent ways of expressing cause (restrict sense) and explanation, and thus we rethink aspects of Portuguese language description and teaching, with the purpose of improving proficiency in written discourse. The principal findings are: a) the existence of three groups of explicative connectives: those which are solely causal, those which are solely explicative and those that comprise both functions; b) the correlation among the three verb moods and explanation, and, in the case of causality, the correlation only with Indicative and Subjunctive verb moods; c) the relationship between causality (in the strict sense) and narration, and between explanation and argumentation; d) the relationship between factuality and causal structures, and between the act of speech called Justification and explicative sentences, expressing not only orders, requests, invitations, opinions and questions. We conclude that the study of casual and explicative connectives should stimulate the reconstruction of knowledge and the analysis of verbal elements (available in the language), which are responsible for the construction of meanings. In addition, the teaching of Portuguese language should focus on a productive approach, more functional, not essentially based on classifications and contents, so that grammar, with the contribution of discourse studies, may foster the improvement of skills and competences in text writing. We do not propose, with this study, that traditional school teaching should be disregarded. On the contrary, this is only another approach, in this case, intradisciplinary, with the purpose of constructing a didactic-pedagogical practice for Portuguese language as mother tongue

Texto completo da fonteArgument(ation) mining, a rapidly growing area of Natural Language Processing (NLP) and computational models of argument, aims at the automatic recognition of argument structures (i.e., components and relations) in natural language textual resources. In the healthcare domain, argument mining has proven beneficial in providing methods to automatically detect argumentative structures to support Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM). The importance of these approaches relies on the fact that, despite the accuracy of neural models in medical diagnosis, explanation of their outcomes remains problematic. The thesis tackles this open issue and focuses on generation and assessment of natural language argumentative explanations for diagnosis predictions, supporting clinicians in decision making and learning. First, I proposed a novel complete pipeline to automatically generate natural language explanations of medical question answering exams for diagnoses relying on a medical ontology and clinical entities from exam texts. I defined a state-of-the-art medical named entity recognition and classification (NERC) system to detect layperson symptoms and medical findings that I align to ontology terms so as to justify a diagnosis of a clinical case provided to medical residents. NERC module, called SYMEXP, allows our system to generate template-based natural language argumentative explanations to justify why the correct answer is correct and why the other proposed options are not. Second, I proposed an argument-based explanation assessment framework, called ABEXA, to automatically extract the argumentative structure of a medical question answering document and highlight a set of customisable criteria to characterise the clinical explanation and the document argumentation. ABEXA tackles the issue of explanation assessment from the argumentative viewpoint by defining a set of graph rules over an automatically generated argumentative graph. Third, I contributed to the design and development of the ANTIDOTE software tool, proposing different modules for argumentation-driven explainable Artificial Intelligence for digital medicine. Our system offers the following functionalities: multilingual argumentative analysis for the medical domain, explanation, extraction and generation of clinical diagnoses, multilingual large language models for the medical domain, and the first multilingual benchmark for medical question-answering. In conclusion, in this thesis, I explore how artificial intelligence combined with the argumentation theory could lead to more transparent healthcare systems. We apply our results to the critical domain of medicine showing all their potential in terms of support for education, for example, of clinical residents

Texto completo da fonteClassification is a very common task in Machine Learning (ML) and the ML models created to perform this task tend to reach human comparable accuracy, at the cost of transparency. The surge of such AI-based systems in the public's daily life has created a need for explainability. Abductive explanations are one of the most popular types of explanations that are provided for the purpose of explaining the behavior of complex ML models sometimes considered as black-boxes. They highlight feature-values that are sufficient for the model to make a prediction. In the literature, they are generated by exploring the whole feature space, which is unreasonable in practice. This thesis tackles this problem by introducing explanation functions that generate abductive explanations from a sample of instances. It shows that such functions should be defined with great care since they cannot satisfy two desirable properties at the same time, namely existence of explanations for every individual decision (success) and correctness of explanations (coherence). This thesis provides a parameterized family of argumentation-based explanation functions, each of which satisfies one of the two properties. It studies their formal properties and their experimental behaviour on different datasets

Texto completo da fonteKnowledge bases are deductive databases where the machinery of logic is used to represent domain-specific and general-purpose knowledge over existing data. In the existential rules framework a knowledge base is composed of two layers: the data layer which represents the factual knowledge, and the ontological layer that incorporates rules of deduction and negative constraints. The main reasoning service in such framework is answering queries over the data layer by means of the ontological layer. As in classical logic, contradictions trivialize query answering since everything follows from a contradiction (ex falso quodlibet). Recently, inconsistency-tolerant approaches have been proposed to cope with such problem in the existential rules framework. They deploy repairing strategies on the knowledge base to restore consistency and overcome the problem of trivialization. However, these approaches are sometimes unintelligible and not straightforward for the end-user as they implement complex repairing strategies. This would jeopardize the trust relation between the user and the knowledge-based system. In this thesis we answer the research question: ``How do we make query answering intelligible to the end-user in presence of inconsistency?''. The answer that the thesis is built around is ``We use explanations to facilitate the understanding of query answering''. We propose meta-level and object-level dialectical explanations that take the form of a dialogue between the user and the reasoner about the entailment of a given query. We study these explanations in the framework of logic-based argumentation and dialectics and we study their properties and their impact on users

Texto completo da fonteThis thesis consists of three parts: textual analysis, didactic research and pedagogical experimentation. The first part presents crucial notions in textual linguistics and discourse analysis, as well as the observations of economic and management texts, which help pave way for a better understanding of the argumentation and explanation in specialised texts. The second part deals with the concept of reading-comprehension competence and the socio-cognitive textual approach in the teaching of reading comprehension. The final part presents the experimental application of the proposed lesson plans for reading comprehension in French as a foreign language designed for Vietnamese students who take their course in FUF (Filières Universitaires Francophones - undergraduates whose majors are in French)

This work is related to the research line "Text and Discourse in oral and written forms" of Postgraduate Program in Portuguese Language of PUC-SP. The general objective is to contribute to teachers and students regarding the preparation for taking entrance examinations with results that might provide a guideline on textual production of dissertative texts. The specific objectives are: highlight the text sequences and their encrustation on the textual scheme of the texts that are considered as model by the board that corrects the exams of Fuvest; confront the point of view projected by the reduced text proposed by Fuvest as a starting point for the production of essays by the applicant, with the projection of a new point of view selected by the candidate, having as parameter the understanding of the reduced proposed theme, i.e. the strategy used for the opinionated construction; highlight the theming and expansions by semantic progression of essays considered "well written", i.e. referral. The theoretical foundation is based on Textual Linguistics and, more specifically, in Textual Analysis of Discourses. To achieve our goal, we followed the study of textual sequences of Adam (2011) and the studies of Silveira (2012) on the argumentative text of a thesis and two theses. The results of the analyzes indicate that: the hierarchical explanatory sequence is most frequent in the texts published by Fuvest compared with the argumentative sequence; there is semantic progression by theming through the new point of view selected by the candidate

Texto completo da fonteIf we want to find a criterion for judging the value of an everyday explanation which simultaneously takes account of the subject's knowledge of the world, the necessities of the speech situation and the compatibility of this speech with what is considered to be generally socially acceptable, then such a criterion cannot be reduced to the concept of exactitude, correction, pragmatic relevance or social acceptability since these three value registers all have to be integrated into the explanation. In contrast, the criterion of plausibility, which makes it possible to differentiate between linguistic productions on the basis of their utility in the general functioning of the language, seems to be a relevant criterion. The results of the first three studies presented show that: 1) subjects are able to judge and establish a hierarchy of explanations as a function of their level of plausibility; 2) the more plausible a sentence is, the faster subjects are in judging its plausibility; 3) the more plausible an explanation is, the better able subjects are to reproduce the original event which had to be explained. Moreover, if we accept the idea that general usage of the language requires us to satisfy norms that relate to the entire language community and which are tied up with questions of social utility, then explanations which are characterised by their social utility - i. E. Internal explanations - should be processed more spontaneously than external explanations. The results of study 4 then go on to show that the plausibility of sentences which involve an internal explanation is judged more quickly than that of sentences which involve an external explanation

The expository and argumentative sequences constitute the major textual sequences in different textual genres occupying a central focus (constituting one of its primary aims) in the recently reviewed program of the Portuguese discipline of secondary school. Although we argue that it is possible to analyze different textual genres based on basic textual sequences this relationship does not constitute our research goal. Instead, we have selected a subject no yet extensively studied, in the European Portuguese domain, even though it is relevant in our professional area: the enunciative dimension of the expository and argumentative textual sequences. Our aim is to contribute to the understanding of a pedagogically more accurate work about the textual sequences, since a deeper knowledge of textual structures and of their organization will enable students to recognize and use them in different textual genres. To attain our goals we have based our analysis mainly on Adam's work on textual sequences; for enunciation and deixis, we have resorted to the study by Benveniste and Kerbrat-Orecchioni, and the linguistic polyphony study was supported by studies of Ducrot, Vion and Fløttum. We extended Benveniste’s concept of ‘person’ by introducing the category of ‘point of view’, and as a result, we obtained a better notion of subjectivity and inter-subjectivity The study was supported by a corpus collected from expository and argumentative textual sequences produced by students of the 12th grade. The analysis seems to demonstrate that enunciative aspects, such as deixis and polyphony, are prototypical distinctive factors of these two textual sequences, which can facilitate the understanding and production of texts by students.
