Architecture form has been one of the hot areas in the field of architectural design, which reflects regional architectural features to some extent. However, most of the existing methods for architecture form belong to the field of qualitative analysis. Accordingly, quantitative methods are urgently required to extract regional architectural style, identify architecture form, and to and further provide the quantitative evaluation. Based on machine learning technology, this paper proposes a novel method to quantify the feature, form, and evaluation of regional architectures. First, we construct a training dataset—the Chinese Ancient Architecture Image Dataset (CAAID), in which each image is labeled by some experts as having at least one of three typical features such as “High Pedestal”, “Deep Eave” and “Elegant Gable”. Second, the CAAID is used to train our neural network model to identify three kinds of architectural features. In order to reveal the traditional forms of regional architecture in Hubei, we built the Hubei Architectural Heritage Image Dataset (HAHID) as our object dataset, in which we collected architectural images from four different regions including southeast, northeast, southwest, and northwest Hubei. Our object dataset is then fed into our neural network model to predict the typical features for those four regions in Hubei. The obtained quantitative results show that the feature identification of the architectural form is consistent with that of regional architectures in Hubei. Moreover, we can observe from the quantitative results that four geographic regions in Hubei show variation; for instance, the feature of the ‘elegant gable’ in southeastern Hubei is more evident, while the “Deep Eave” in the northwest is more evident. In addition, some new building images are selected to feed into our neural network model and the output quantitative results can effectively identify the corresponding feature style of regional architectures in Hubei. Therefore, our proposed method based on machine learning can be used not only as a quantitative tool to extract features of regional architectures, but also as an effective approach to evaluate architecture forms in the urban renewal process.

Processes for evaluating software architecture (SA) help to investigate problems and potential risks in SA. It is derived from many studies that proposed a plethora of systematic SA evaluation methods, while industrial practitioners currently refrain from applying them since they are heavyweight. Nowadays, heterogeneous software architectures are organized based on the new infrastructure. Hardware and associated software allow different systems, such as embedded, sensor-based, modern AI, and cloud-based systems, to cooperate efficiently. It brings more complexities to SA evaluation. Alternatively, lightweight architectural evaluation methods have been proposed to satisfy the practitioner’s concerns, but practitioners still do not adopt these methods. This study employs a systematic literature review with a text analysis of SA’s definitions to propose a comparison framework for SA. It identifies lightweight features and factors to improve the architectural evaluation methods among industrial practitioners. The features are determined based on the practitioner’s concerns by analyzing the architecture’s definitions from stakeholders and reviewing architectural evaluation methods. The lightweight factors are acquired by studying the five most commonly used lightweight methods and the Architecture-based Tradeoff Analysis Method (ATAM), the most well-known heavyweight method. Subsequently, the research addresses these features and factors.

The paper focuses on the new field of philosophy of architecture in analytic tradition. The research presented in this paper is part of an ongoing doctoral research concerning the connection between ethics and aesthetics in architecture. The connection between architecture and philosophy is not a novelty. Architectural theory has always looked up to philosophy for inspiration but only recently philosophers have started to study architecture in detail. Architectural theory is still a field that is in search of a better conceptual frame after the failure of the theoretical premises of the Modern Movement and the rise of the "theory speak". Architecture's features as a public art ask for a certain amount of objectivity. The philosophy of architecture in analytic tradition can contribute to a more objective conceptual frame. The principal concerns are familiar to those acquainted with continental philosophy: What makes architecture special among the arts? What is the essence of an architectural work? How we can better define architecture's social mission? But the way of answering them is different. The ethical dimension of architecture is one of the most debated subjects among architects in recent years. There are several contributions on the connection between ethics and aesthetics in the philosophy of architecture in analytic tradition. They have the potential to have an impact on architectural theory and practice.

Often architectural theory has been articulated on prescriptive views about what architecture should be, rather than on views formulated from historical experiences and examples of architecture. In this paper I will try to offer readings of architectural form by looking at a historical example from classical Ottoman architecture and at contemporary examples, to show how different architectures treat form. In examples taken from Sinan's architecture, symbols are investigated in relation to movement, to urban settlement, to religion and power. It is hoped that this analysis will offer an understanding of how the significance of architecture in human experience and in the urban context goes beyond structure and function

The paper examines Christian architecture from the perspective of “meta-codal function”, i.e. through examination of architectural symbolism expressed solely by architectural means. Emphasizing symbolic and semantic content of architecture, the paper offers a broader research field of architectural artistry by using a wider iconographic comparison. As a representative of baroque architecture and the most prominent example of architectural symbolism, St. Peter and St. Paul’s Church in Vilnius (1668–1702) has been selected for the research. The iconographic programme of this church is compared to most distinct iconographic themes identified through the analysis of some examples of historic Christian architecture. By this method, the research detaches from the usual stylistic analysis and poses the most basic question in architectural artistry: is architecture capable of expressing the independent artistic content which can translate more than architecture’s general appearance.

China is a country with diverse cultures, and both material and spiritual cultures are extremely rich. Religious architectural culture is one branch of the overall culture of society. Chinese religious architecture embodies traditional Chinese culture, the superb architectural skills and the architectural aesthetic, and it is a concentrated manifestation of religious material culture and spiritual culture. While preserving its own cultural characteristics in the process of globalization, religious architectural culture is a topic worthy of exploration. It is important to explore the culture of religious architecture while maintaining its own cultural characteristics. There are many religions in China, including indigenous Taoism and foreign religions such as Buddhism, Christianity, Islam, and Catholicism. Each religion has its own cultural connotations, and each religious architecture has its own characteristics. After the introduction of foreign religions into China, they have been influenced by traditional Chinese culture, resulting in their religious architecture incorporating some Chinese characteristics. In the current cultural context of China, a comparative analysis of the characteristics of various religious architectures is conducive to a deeper understanding of religious architectural culture and is of certain significance for the inheritance and protection of religious architecture. This article conducts fundamental research on Buddhist architecture, Taoist architecture, and Islamic architecture from the perspectives of overall layout and architectural carving art. By comparing and analyzing religious architecture, it reveals the cultural connotations it carries. It is hoped that this will provide new ideas for the protection of religious architecture and the inheritance of architectural culture.

Despite its richness, the research corpus published about Islamic architecture presents some discontinuities in the knowledge of the architecture in the lands ruled by Muslims. Similarly, the dynamics of influence that might have operated between the "monumental" architecture in these lands and their popular architectures are insufficiently addressed. Moreover, the material culture related to the Islamic civilization is almost exclusively studied as a product that has stopped evolving. The architecture produced during Al-Ya'ariba (Al- Ya'rubi) Imamate (1624-1749) is an instance of these understudied topics in the history of Islamic architecture. This research argues that Al-Ya'rubi Imamate is not only an important chapter in the history of Oman, the Arabian Peninsula, Indian Ocean, and Eastern Africa, but also the architecture of this period has created the identity of Omani architecture as we know it today. Nonetheless, there is no architectural production in this era both in the major references and scientific publications of Islamic architecture in the 17th and 18th centuries. Through field research, comparative analysis, and literature review of the history of Omani architecture, especially in the 17th -18th centuries, this research examines the military architecture in Oman during Al-Ya'ariba Imamate including its reference, and its influence on other architectures. It is a contribution to the scientific endeavour to address this specific architectural typology from the perspective of its mechanism of (trans) formation and its continuity of forms until the contemporary architecture of Oman.

Leon Battista Alberti famously likened the relationship between architectural structure and superstructure to the dualism of skeleton and skin. In Amorphous Ornament: Wendel Dietterlin and the Dissection of Architecture, Elizabeth J. Petcu scrutinizes how the Architectura treatise (1593–98) of Strasbourg artist Wendel Dietterlin the Elder (ca. 1550–99) subverted Alberti's theory and the aesthetic of stability it promoted by popularizing a style of amorphous architectural motifs that recall bone, cartilage, muscle, and flesh, melding built framework with decorative surface. Drawing these corporeal conceits from contemporary anatomical publications, Dietterlin inspired buildings, architectural prints, and objects that challenged tectonic conventions, upset the traditional split between exterior and interior, and emulated the figural arts’ involvement in representing interior human forms. In assessing how Dietterlin's Architectura turned the proverbial body of architecture inside out, Petcu demonstrates that Renaissance comparisons between body and building did not always project ideals of architectural beauty and reveals overlooked origins of baroque-era fusions of architecture and the figural arts.

The natural world consists of incredibly complex and integrated systems. Ecosystems and biodiversity all work cohesively to sustainably maintain the basis of our very existence on the planet. These interrelationships form the foundation of all living things and have zero impact on the natural environment. Mankind hugely influences natural systems through its introduction of technological systems . This influence is traceable to the unsustainable extraction of natural resources, which became wide-spread in the industrial era. Since the start of the industrial era, city borders have rapidly expanded often leaving the inner-city decentralized. Such expansion has made its mark on the central business district of Pretoria, where natural voids have been created in the city fabric. The environment in the CBD, through the impact of human activities, is in a state of decay, which is a threat to the very existence of the ecological environment. Architecture needs to return to its roots and find a spatial condition to co-exist with the natural realm in a regenerative manner. Thus utilizing nature s ability to solve problems that we currently struggle with. This dissertation focuses on regenerative architecture. The ecological environment, and certain insects in particular, provides us with countless solutions. Unfortunately, we sometimes mistake the innovation and services of insects as the aggravation of pests. The proposed program therefore centers on the research of these insects and on learning what they can provide for the greater good of humanity s future; a future where humans and nature have a mutually beneficial relationship. This project also taps into the closed-loop-system of the regenerative theory in which, nothing is seen as a single entity, but rather as a system where anything is beneficial and interrelates to everything. This theory can only strengthen and densify Pretoria s inner city, filling the voids with systems and contributing positively towards the regeneration of resources.

This PhD responds to a two fold problem with the philosophy of design and the practice of design. The philosophical problem is stated as the discrepancy between a dominant philosophical framework that orders the world according to eternal essences and the actual conditions of the world in which we exist: the conditions of becoming and of flux. Commencing with a critique of the western metaphysical tradition of statics this research project proposes that we need to find a way of describing an evolutionary model of practice, and by so doing to provide a revitalised narration of process. Consequently, the PhD explores the meanings of process through a critical examination of an ensemble of projects created by the author. Within this framework, a number of questions are posed in order to explore the proposition of a process practice. These questions are: What is process? How does one think process? Indeed, how do we get to grasp change? What are the consequences of process thinking on the practices of design, their fields of operation, and their productions? And, how can the thematising of process contribute to the design of the constructed environment, as well as reconfigure the practices of design? This thematising of process is argued to involve a necessary address to the constitutive and interrelated characteristics of process: space/time, movement, change, form and matter. Such an address is also seen to problematise the status of the object, the paradigms of representation, the modes of creation, the economies of exchange, and the structures of community, and to offer a modality of practice which would re-imagine the forms of social exchange to offer an ethical alternative to the tyranny of supply and demand, and thereby reconfigure the potential for dwelling. Making an overview of the discourses and practices engaging with theories of becoming, this thesis argues that almost all of these re-inscribe statics and that consequently the practice of design seems to drag behind our understanding of the world. Through a meditation on dis/appearance, in which the dynamics of being and becoming and the restless ambiguity of the gap are examined, the work establishes a process vocabulary, and makes clear through a material practice, the domains of process thinking, its inclinations, and the kinds of operations and procedures that flourish there. Foregrounding the fertile character of process practice, the PhD then proceeds to introduce notions of the movement-form, the duration-form, the transformational-form, the geometry of encounter, and to argue for physical form as an in-movement poise. Advocating new modes of approach and of attentiveness, and demonstrating new generative methods, this PhD argues that process thinking is not simply an operational stance, but an ethical position that identifies a field of care, and that consequently the design practices be expanded by taking seriously the relationship between process thinking and place making. Thus, this thesis concludes by advocating a mode of place making which, rather than reproduce planned environments as systems of control, configures place as the discursive contested place of encounter and exchange.

• Autotelic Architecture is a collection of buildings with architectural stories. • The buildings included are described with black line drawings on white paper and a supplementary text. The drawings have been stripped down to only show walls, pillars, stairs, ramps and significant objects. Together the drawing and the text describes what story is told in the building through its architectural elements. • The reason to include a building in the collection is our recognition of a story within it. • All of the buildings in the collection have been built. • Each of the buildings in the collection hold a story thought of as relevant, communicated with spaces and objects. The relevance is based on an incomplete set of attributes, indicating a strong architectural story. • The buildings are categorized in different themes. For example, the theme of labyrinths describe buildings that are of a maze like nature, schizophrenic describe buildings with multiple logics and nothingness describe buildings appearing to be almost nothing. One building can be part of several themes, and the number of themes is not fixed. • The intention is to visualize the nature of the architectural story and to provide a conceptual inventory for further development of architectural stories. We believe that from telling stories with only the configuration of a buildings physical conditions there arises a direct intellectual stimulation which adds poetic depth to the building. • This book argues that the poetical aspects of architecture has a purpose in itself and should take precedence over the technical aspects. • This book is not a manual and can therefore not be seen as dogmatic or as a recipe for architecture. It is a body of strong architectural stories that deserve to be noted and shared. • This book does not take a stand against other forms of architecture, it simply proposes a language of designing that is both serious and happy, both literal and tentative, both enigmatic and real.

The aim of this thesis is to develop a theoretical framework that is based on the body and on the theme of Movement, for the analysis, interpretation and creation of Architecture. My research pro poses that Movement rather than Form may be the way forward for Architecture. A theory that is based on the experience and perception of Movement, requires a Movement-focused re-search of Architecture, and is furthered by examining the discipline that is primarily concerned with the design of human movement in space, namely Choreography. My central argument, therefore, is that there is sufficient commonality between the process of creating Architecture and that of Choreography to warrant examining principles of the latter, to advance our knowledge of the former. The term 'movement' can conjure different associations and so it is necessary to define the scope of the term as it pertains to the research at hand. This study identifies five treatments of Movement: Pictorially Affective, Literal, Animated, Choreographed and Ex pressed, which are subsets of three broad categories based on the movement of: 1 - people in space: P, A, C 2 - the building (actual) : L 3 - the building (implied) : E The thesis a) critiques the historiography of Architecture from a movement-themed perspective, and provides a brief over view of Choreographic theories about Movement, b) uses photographs, video and other digital media as tools to analyse both Architecture and dance Choreography, interpreting the treatment of Movement in Architecture, according to P/L/A/C/E and, lastly, c) the thesis explores a syncretic approach towards the making of a movement-based Architecture, informed by Choreography. Video capture and editing are among several methods explored in order to study the design of movement in an architectural con text, evidence of which is presented on an accompanying DVD.

This thesis examines the relationship between the practice of architectural design and the media through which it is represented. It makes a consistent critical appraisal of the philosophical presumptions under which architectural theory is made, in particular, the relationship between theories of expression and representation. The thesis presents seven distinct projects by the author which developmentally explore the degree to which architecture is able to represent the sublime - in particular through the concept of horror. In this instance horror emerges as a category of excess that supervenes the uses of the term in the genres of film and literary studies. Within the thesis horror describes an (impossible) objective for representation The thesis argues that the environment within which these philosophical questions of 'effect' may most resonantly be explored is, ultimately, digital media. The author draws on contemporary commentary by Jacques Derrida and Georges Bataille, in particular Derrida's discussion of the Parergon and contemporary discussion of l'informe, the informal to support these arguments. It is within the apparently 'real' environments of virtual reality that the presentation of the mise-en-scene of horror may be explored. Immersive digital environments, it is argued, provide an appropriate level of freedom and direction for the exploration of the spatial experience of the abyss. The thesis concludes by presenting observations on the antinomy of aspirations that any materialist theory of architectural practice must attend to when working within digital media.

This thesis is an inquiry into the potential of film as an extended perspective defined by the sequential juxtaposition of images. Based on the notion that linear perspective in Renaissance architecture was used as a formal tool for the poetic imagination, it is assumed that motion perspective used as a design tool would have a formative influence on the architectural design process and thence, on the final product, architectural space and the sequence of spaces. The project uses film theory as the conceptual framework from which to gain a better understanding of the fourth dimension (time) in the creation of architecture. Cinematic camera movements, which already have a syntax or patterned language are modified for defining specific geometries in the creation of built space. The program consists of a housing block and community center in East Boston, offering a variety of spatial types for experimentation. In the primary analysis, the site is observed through a series of camera sequences. In the design process these camera movements are used to generate a spatial geometry based on the relationship between camera and filmed space. For instance, the housing has a layered spatial configuration corresponding to the tracking shot used in the site analysis. Computer generated motion graphics (4-D motion perspective) are used in each step of conceptual design. A dialectic of observation and form-generation with camera sequences are repeated throughout the building using the syntax of other movie-based sequences. The thesis demonstrates the potential of cinematographic sequencing in architectural design, moving beyond the three-dimensional scenography of traditional perspective.

Kattein, J. "The Architecture Chronicle : diary of an architectural practice". Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2009. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/18941/.

Texto completo da fonte
Resumo:
Most books on architecture start when a building is completed, carefully editing out any evidence of the design and production process. As a result, architecture is often seen as a product rather than a process. The Architecture Chronicle is about architecture as a practice. It has two parts. The book Blur: the Making of Nothing, by Diller and Scofidio, has informed the format of part one. Blur book reports on the design and construction process of Blur building from initial design ideas to the completion of the building. Part one is a diary reporting on the realisation of five stage sets and one urban intervention realised over a period of four years, starting on 16 December 2003. The diary is intercepted by references that are, where appropriate, carefully integrated in the overall design. The book Delirious New York: A retroactive Manifesto for Manhattan, by Rem Koolhaas, tells the story of the building of New York with the author taking on the role of a ‘ghost writer’1, putting into perspective the ‘mountains of evidence’2 to discover patterns, methodologies and strategies. Part two is such a ‘retroactive manifesto’3, mining the projects in the diary for strategies that re-appear and fortify throughout The Architecture Chronicle. In his book Words and Buildings: A Vocabulary of Modern Architecture, Adrian Forty observes that the pre-Renaissance architect worked on the building site amongst other tradesmen in an environment of dispersed authorship. It was his ability to draw and to write, acquired during the Italian Renaissance, that allowed the architect to remove himself from the site of construction and to upgrade his status from anonymous craftsman amongst others to artistic creator. New procurement methods have changed the role of the architect in contemporary construction projects. To minimise liability, and as a result of the increased specialisation of building professionals, contemporary buildings are designed by a design team. This threatens the status of the architect as artistic creator. Today, the architect operates once again in an environment of dispersed authorship as a member of the design team working alongside other design professionals. Drawings are more often produced by visualisers, engineers and sub-contractors than by architects while text is more often written by surveyors or specifiers. To maintain his status as artisitc creator, the architect in The Architecture Chronicle takes on three distinct characters. The architect-inventor challenges conventions and questions the social status quo. The architect-activist transgresses the boundary of the profession and enters the construction process. The architect-arbitrator engages the audience to realise the ambitious project. The Architecture Chronicle concludes that the contemporary architect still draws and writes, but that it is often the architect’s ability to engage and direct that asserts his or her status. To assert his or her status in the design team, the architect’s ability to talk and to act is more important than his or her ability to draw and write.

AbstractThe main question of this paper is related to whether and in what way we understand the notion of topological deformability, which appears in numerous texts of architectural theory from the beginning of the 1990s until today. In general, the paper deals with the problem of the denotation of concepts from other scientific fields, and shows how the architectural discourse changes the meaning of a mathematical concept, determining it within its own discipline. The transition of the term topological deformability is set as an example of how architecture uses and improves its inherent interdisciplinary dimension, as well as an example of how the way we research in architecture could make a tangible social impact. The first part of this paper will focus on introducing and analyzing the concept of topological deformability and its transition from mathematics to architectural theory. In the second part, it will examine how, through different theoretical approaches, the term topological deformability influences the transformation of the thinking modality in architecture, and how it traces the narrow path through architectures’ knowledge toward the wider audience. Therefore, architecture’s dominant as an instrument of plural social reality will be emphasized. The research will show how the term topological deformability through architecture opened the way to changing the idea of otherness, leading to the essential acceptance of differences.

In furthering the assertion that architecture is a performing art not a fine art, this work re-interprets the ideas of sieve theory, granular synthesis, and arborescence as strategies of architectural composition, demonstrating the manner in which Iannis Xenakis has established parameters for pushing the boundaries and the understandings of architectures of an extended comprehension of time. Elevations are considered as the threshold and transition between inside and outside, architecture and landscape, in terms of framing of views, choreographing perceptions and movements, in the permeability of a thickened wall manipulating sound and light as palpable materials of spatial containment, interrogating the intended and the unexpected as we move through and occupy the spaces defined by the physical constructs afforded by the intentions of built form. The work, Listening to Architecture is a twenty-two-minute film or cinematic painting.

Architectural smells are decisions made at the software architecture level, whether intentional or not, that may negatively impact the quality of a software system. In the literature, architectural smells are identified mainly by relying on the source code or other implementation artifacts. However, architectural smells could be detected at design time, even before employing implementation efforts and preventing them from being reflected at the system implementation. This research investigates how software architecture descriptions realized through architecture description languages (ADLs) can be used to identify architectural smells at design time. This work focuses on how architectural smells manifest and can be detected in SysADL, an ADL that allows describing both structure and behavior of software architectures using standardized diagrams from the OMG’s SysML language.

Due to global warming and depletion of fossil fuels, alternative sustainable fuel technology is essential. As a consequence of this need, many automotive original equipment manufacturers have started manufacturing electric vehicles (EVs) as sustainable, zero-emission solution. This paper evaluates different architectures for EV design to establish a preferred architecture. A detailed literature study is outlined to evaluate production and concept proposals of many original equipment manufacturers, student projects, and autonomous electric cars. The different architectural aspects of these designs, such as mechanical and electrical technologies, are discussed. Starting with initial schematics, a theoretical model is developed for each of the EV drive train architectures. The study uses advanced modeling techniques to compare these architectures. Different drive train architectures are compared in the contexts of functionality, operation, manufacturability, and modularity. The preferred architecture was developed using advanced tools such as virtual modeling to establish operational sequences for the components that make up an EV. In addition, product data management software was used as management tool to document changes during the architecture’s development. Recommendations and discussions on a selection of vehicle architectures are detailed along with those for a preferred architecture.

Defensive architecture in the Ziz and Todhra valleys in MoroccoThe earthen architecture of the Todhra and Ziz Valleys in Southern Morocco takes us back to the basic and archetypal forms of building in the Mediterranean. Architectural typology and language together form a cultural background that is strongly rooted in the territory and its inhabitants: the Berbers. The architectures, fragile and in constant decay, represent a treatise of living architecture in which the shapes, proportions and decorations are repeated over time with continuity. This research tries to verify, with data coming from direct and instrumental surveys, the quality and diffusion of the architectures that dot the valleys of the Todhra and the Ziz which, at same time, host the population and defend the most precious asset: water. Along the valleys, united by the same language, we find: igherm, fortified citadels; tighremt, fortress houses.

Military fortifications have always played a key role in territorial defense. Their location and visibility often depended on strategic military choices, such as shape. The geometric development of the latter is the result of centuries of refinement of construction techniques concerning the evolution of warfare, the architectural consistency of the fortified area, and adaptation to the orography of the territory. A final common aspect is their history, often marked by transformations that have determined the architecture's level of preservation and use. These architectures can be perfectly preserved, destroyed, or fallen into disuse. Of the latter, many examples are scattered throughout the territories, a fascinating constellation of vestiges that have lost their visibility and importance. The instruments of surveying, drawing, and representation can support the virtual rediscovery of the ancient role of architecture. This research project focuses on the Fort of Santa Caterina in Verona. Originally called Werk Hess, it is a fortification located south of Verona and built between 1848 and 1856. Only a few small traces remain today, but the Fort of Santa Caterina was an architecture of remarkable beauty because of its naturalistic and environmental inclusion, an architectural and perspective cornerstone of the fortified city due to its dominant position. Through a comprehensive course of source analysis, the survey of the existing territory, and representation in plan and space, the research project aims to give a virtual shape to this military marvel, laying the groundwork for more complex multi-disciplinary analyses of the artifact and the surrounding area.

Specifying the product platform and family architecture to support product varieties can be a challenging task for companies. Especially when various viewpoints have to be considered which include product variety, materials, manufacturing complexity, assembly complexity, average component count commonality, assembly sequence and late point differentiation. Consequently there is a need for reasoning to balance multiple viewpoints in the case of product families for the development of good architecture. In this paper we present a product family architecture design approach that can be applied to develop efficient product family architectures for a given set of product functions, while considering multiple viewpoints. In order to identify the efficient product family architecture(s) a three phase approach is presented: (1) Generating a set of feasible module architectures of options for each product function; (2) Combining the feasible module architectures and evaluating the product family architectures to identify candidate product family architectures with high evaluation scores; and (3) Improving the selected product family architecture. The product family architecture design approach is demonstrated using a coffeemaker product family.

Software architectures can be used as a vehicle to improve the study of quality properties in the early stages of development. This paper proposes an automatic mapping between the design of architectural components and the specification of DEVS atomic models with aims to evaluate all-purpose quality metrics. Then, we use the functional description of architectural components (that address functional requirements) to estimate the architecture adjustment to non-functional requirements. The guidelines for structuring the simulation models are defined starting from the design of high-level components. To illustrate the proposal, web-based architecture is used as proof of concepts.

Graph neural networks (GNNs) emerged recently as a powerful tool for analyzing non-Euclidean data such as social network data. Despite their success, the design of graph neural networks requires heavy manual work and domain knowledge. In this paper, we present a graph neural architecture search method (GraphNAS) that enables automatic design of the best graph neural architecture based on reinforcement learning. Specifically, GraphNAS uses a recurrent network to generate variable-length strings that describe the architectures of graph neural networks, and trains the recurrent network with policy gradient to maximize the expected accuracy of the generated architectures on a validation data set. Furthermore, to improve the search efficiency of GraphNAS on big networks, GraphNAS restricts the search space from an entire architecture space to a sequential concatenation of the best search results built on each single architecture layer. Experiments on real-world datasets demonstrate that GraphNAS can design a novel network architecture that rivals the best human-invented architecture in terms of validation set accuracy. Moreover, in a transfer learning task we observe that graph neural architectures designed by GraphNAS, when transferred to new datasets, still gain improvement in terms of prediction accuracy.

Is important that architecture is the product of more than the aesthetic concerns of the architect and the practical concerns of the client. It straddles two realms: that of the fine arts and that of the highly practical and utilitarian. In its dual nature, architecture is most often cast as a high art; the outcomes of architectural thinking and making are celebrated, analyzed, and documented for their aesthetic significance as art objects. Architecture’s impact as a service, being practical and useful, are deemed less worthy by both the discipline and profession. Pivotal Constructions of Unseen Events reconstitutes a new reading of American history from 1871-2020, a period marked by tremendous national growth and building, alongside the rise of new shared ideas, practices, and customs that have shaped—and continue to shape—the structures of American society alongside the structures of its built environment.Through the construction of five narratives for five buildings of architectural origin, this research examines the social, technological, material, and economic forces that led to their emergence and construction, as well as the outcomes that arose in society afterward. Pivotal Constructions demonstrates—through the close reading of buildings—how to understand architecture as historical event rather than historical artifact. Whereby architecture’s historical significance is not solely as a static object (or artifact), but rather as something that happened and happens (an event), transforming and shaping history in unexpected and significant ways. This approach gathers and reassembles evidence of architecture’s historical significance, elements hence claimed by other narratives, absorbed by other disciplines, and told by other actors. This method of re-constructing architectural history, is meant to recapture a fuller gamut of architecture’s impact on and in society. For VIBRArch 2022, this author presents one of these narratives: “Building the American Dream”, the history of how the arrival in 1908 of the Gamble House (Greene and Greene Architects) played a part in the genesis of the single-family, detached house, which has become a potent and defining symbol of American values and morals.
