This paper points to the possibility of codification of urban planning and application of physical regulation standards in urban form design to establish such instruments of guidance as will ensure the recognition, appreciation and development of local urban identity. The purpose of establishing general principles and making quality recommendations that would aim at urban form design regulation and be implemented as qualitative criteria and regulation standards is to propose a methodology for the rehabilitation of the City of Banja Luka?s identity applicable to similar cities in the region, with due adjustments to allow for contextual specificity, with the possibility of coordinated regional city development. The discontinuity in the urban development of Banja Luka and other cities in the region has jeopardised the inherent characteristics of their identities, resulting in reduced recognisability and impaired integrity. This study covers the period since the beginning of Banja Luka?s guided urban development (Austro-Hungarian administration, 1878), which should allow a review of its urban morphogenesis and an understanding of its key elements, as well as identification of the general principles and rules of urban form regulation as laid down in the local ordinance and planning legacy.

Architectural design review is a method of environmental management which is widely used bv governmental agencies in both the United States and in Great Britain. Because design review is a governmental function, there is a major need to assess how well it works Research covering over 29,000 respondents and 5,600 environmental scenes suggests that scientific protocols can be adapted to provide an accurate and efficient design review protocol. The protocol uses preference experiments to find the standardized mean difference ([Formula: see text]) between a proposed project and a random sample of existing projects. Values of d will indicate whether the project will increase, maintain, or diminish the aesthetic merit of the sampled area. The protocol is illustrated by applying it to the case of design review for a single residence. Implications for further implementations are discussed.

In Bulgaria, public relations associated with spatial planning, investment design and construction are regu-lated by the Spatial Development Act (2001). According to article 62 (10) of this act, each Municipal Coun-cil adopts an Ordinance for the construction and protection of the green system on the territory of the municipality. There are 265 municipalities in Bulgaria and they are free to customise this ordinance as long as the goals and framework of the Spatial Development Act (2001) are maintained. The aim of this article is to review all Ordinances for the construction and protection of the green system available in Bulgaria and to analyse the included information and regulations regarding the construction of green roofs and green walls. The review of the ordinances showed that the construction of green roofs and green walls is not suf-ficiently addressed in the Bulgarian legislation at the municipal level. About 30.2% of the municipalities in the country do not have an Ordinance for development, maintenance and protection of the green system, 33.6% of the municipalities have such an ordinance but it does not mention green roofs and green walls and only 30.9% have an ordinance and it regulates the construction of green roofs and/or green walls.

In recent years, researchers in the architecture field have explored VR technology for various purposes in the architectural design process. Current efforts have supported the growing knowledge of VR utilization, specifically for the architectural design review process. In this study, we adapt the affordance concept from the ecological psychology study to add further evidence on VR utilization for the design review process. This study aims to develop an affordance-based design review method in architectural design by utilizing immersive VR technology. It sits at the crossroads of architecture design, virtual reality, and affordance research. This project aimed to create an affordance-based review method framework, a VR system to support the method, test both the method and the VR system, and assess the VR system’s effectiveness as a companion system for the affordance-based design method process. The study was conducted in the scope of architectural education settings only. It used a third-year architectural design studio course as a case. This study confirms that the affordance-based design review method using virtual reality helps students improve their design work. The method reveals the presence of positive and negative affordances in their work. It also shows the differences between a student and supervisor in perceiving the affordances for reviewing design works.

At present, Chinese architectural education overemphasizes the pursuit of formal design teaching goals, lack of rational and humanistic analysis, resulting in students ignoring the understanding of the essence of architecture, thus staying in the stage of schema imitation. Rafael Moneo's architectural theory advocates the practicality of concrete analysis of concrete problems. The purpose of this study was, through the study of Rafael Moneo's architectural design ideas and works, establish a teaching course based on the concept of "reflection design ", which provides a theoretical and practical basis for future architectural review courses. Quantitative data were collected through questionnaires and verified the validity of the "reflection design" theory by experimental method. The study revealed that "reflective design "theory can be effectively applied in architectural review courses so that students would have their own understanding of design rather than blindly follow it. The theory improves teaching quality in architectural review courses. In view of these results, the study recommends that design be pertinent, and the teaching of architectural review courses should focus on combining students' practice and theory.

The design studio and the associated design review can be regarded as the signature pedagogy of architectural education, where students garner the essence of what it means to be an architect. Here, novices are transformed into architects through the acquisition of architectural cultural capital. This paper investigates the design review in East African schools of architecture from a student’s perspective, garnered from focus group discussions carried out in five schools of architecture, and corroborated through observations. Findings indicate challenges in the design review, vis-à-vis the broader goals and objectives of architectural education. However, it did uncover attempts at change, via a ‘back seat instructor approach’, for example, breaking down the stereotype of the design review as a hostile environment for students. The paper concludes with a few recommendations to help recast this signature pedagogical approach as a truly discursive environment.

Architectural design has generally not been included in estimations of hedonic pricing models and the reason is no doubt the difficulty in capturing it in a usable measurement variable. It is usually too idiosyncratic and heterogeneous to “sum up” easily and introduce as an explanatory variable. However, in some housing markets, architectural design consists of a limited number of standardized “prototypes”, which can then be used as explanatory variables in hedonic estimations. Such is the case for Riga, Latvia, where almost the entire housing stock fits into about a score of fairly standardized architectural design types. This paper is an empirical analysis of the Riga housing market, which only became a “market” in a meaningful sense after the collapse of the Soviet regime in Latvia. The paper analyzes a set of about 3500 transactions, all from recent years. We estimate the elasticity of housing value with respect to size of housing units and some other physical features, and the value of the different architectural designs, controlling for location. This is one of the first hedonic or microeconomic analyses of housing values in any post-Soviet transitional economy.

Creativity is fundamental to design problem-solving. This paper sets out a systematic review of the literature in relation to its role in the architectural design studio in order to identify central issues that impact upon this activity. Challenges and best practices in relation to systematic reviews are outlined, and the procedure followed in this context is set out in detail. This involves an iterative evaluation process that resulted in a pool of 17 papers for analysis. Eleven themes emerged in the analysis of the papers, which were organized into five key categories dealing with: pedagogy, cognitive approach, interaction and socialization, information representation, and measuring ideation and creativity. A discussion of these categories contributed to the comparison and connections between the selected papers, and the identification of critical issues and directions for promoting creativity in the architectural design studio.

Heritage shophouses are the primary architectural legacy that has greatly characterised the place identity of the urban historic district in Malaysia since the 17th century through its distinctive architectural design character. In contrast to the modern building design that is seen as contextually isolated from the place identity of the urban historic district, the architectural identity of heritage shophouses is seen as successful in fitting into the place identity due to its significantly responsive architectural identity to contextual factors. This paper aims to systematically review the influential factors on the Malaysian heritage shophouse design which constitutes its architectural identity through content analysis. This paper extracts scholars’ studies on heritage shophouse architectural design features, heritage shophouse morpho-typologies, and the factors that influence its architectural identity development. Heritage shophouses in Malaysia are morphologically categorized into Early Heritage Shophouse styles, Eclectic Heritage Shophouses, and Non-Cultural Heritage Shophouse styles. Regardless of their architectural styles, all heritage shophouses are characterized by the façade articulation, the interior design including the spatial organization system, and the building construction materials. Every element is primarily influenced by the tropical topographical climates and material sources as a basic architectural adaptation, the building development standards set by the colonial regimes, cultural assimilation, and the advancement of building construction and materials. The findings of this study can help architects how to prioritize design considerations in developing their new architectural intervention design ideas in the urban historic district to preserve its valuable historical characteristics.

To effectively use augmented reality (AR) technology for end-user involved design collaboration, it is necessary to ensure the effectiveness of the AR system from the end-user’s perspective. However, most efforts have mainly focused on technological development, and as such, limited attention has been paid to the end-user’s application of the AR system. Therefore, this study investigates how the AR system affects architectural design review based on the user’s perspectives. Three different display systems presenting a 3D model including a 2D screen, VR, and AR were tested, and a total of 76 participants evaluated visual presentation quality, perceived acceptability, and user experience according to their usage of the visualization platform types during the design review activities. Compared to other systems, the results indicated that the AR system could be more effective in reviewing the visual elements of a building. Furthermore, AR showed the highest ratings for acceptance level and user experience. The innovation provided by AR created a positive user experience, despite its remaining challenges to be resolved in terms of functionality. Since it is expected that the use of AR can be promoted by overcoming certain technological limitations, this study contributes to guiding AR system applications for end-users involved in the design review process.

This essay reviews three books on contemporary Chinese urbanism. The first book, Designing Reform, understands the exceptionalism of Chinese reform through architectural evidence. The second book, The Shenzhen Experiment, further argues for the exceptionalism and non-replicability of Shenzhen reform. The third book, The City After Chinese New Towns, similarly highlights the unprecedentedness of Chinese new towns. These three recent publications collectively aim to demystify contemporary Chinese urbanism, and have done so with a sensibility towards space, geography, materiality, and infrastructure. These authors and editors are mainly architectural researchers leveraging disciplinary contributions to the discussion of post-socialist China. In turn, they have also contributed to the field of architecture and urban design with rich case studies in China. This review essay aims to understand (i) their geographical and spatial perspectives, (ii) their architectural design perspectives, and (iii) how they address social justice issues. It seeks to formulate contemporary Chinese urbanization as an object of inquiry, to “exceptionalize” Chinese phenomena, and to argue for the pedagogical contribution of Chinese case studies to architecture and urban design.

Knight and Stiny's paper ‘Classical and non-classical computation’ (arq 5/4, pp 355–372) is a most valuable review of recent work in shape computation but also raises a number of concepts of value in architectural education. One of the problems faced by a ‘learner designer’ is the development of an effective ‘design process’. The ways in which a designer represents form in order to deal with it during design are not necessarily apparent in the final design, or in the resulting building: it is in design development that these representations and operations become explicit and the processes of composition become transparent. Since architectural computing makes explicit the structuring and ordering logic inherent in formal models and makes transparent the operations upon objects which result in designs, the computer provides a unique environment in which to explore the principles of design.

Application of biomimetics has expanded progressively to other fields in recent years, including urban and architectural design, scaling up from materials to a larger scale. Besides its contribution to design and functionality through a long evolutionary process, the philosophy of biomimetics contributes to a sustainable society at the conceptual level. The aim of this review is to shed light on trends in the application of biomimetics to architectural and urban design, in order to identify potential issues and successes resulting from implementation. In the application of biomimetics to architectural design, parts of individual “organisms”, including their form and surface structure, are frequently mimicked, whereas in urban design, on a larger scale, biomimetics is applied to mimic whole ecosystems. The overall trends of the reviewed research indicate future research necessity in the field of on biomimetic application in architectural and urban design, including Biophilia and Material. As for the scale of the applications, the urban-scale research is limited and it is a promising research which can facilitate the social implementation of biomimetics. As for facilitating methods of applications, it is instrumental to utilize different types of knowledge, such as traditional knowledge, and providing scientific clarification of functions and systems based on reviews. Thus, interdisciplinary research is required additionally to reach such goals.

Given its wide scope, architectural criticism as a discipline has had a long history of discussions and debates over its uses, contexts, methods, and even boundaries. Authors have alluded to its complex and virtually indefinable nature. The term architectural criticism itself is diverse in its usage, as it is used to describe the activities of critics, academic architectural treatises, and the architectural design decision-making process. Beyond its architectural origins, architectural criticism itself also approaches architecture from an interdisciplinary standpoint, often blending and adapting the methods and ideas of other disciplines to architecture. Despite its long history, not too many review papers approach the subject from a broad and general perspective. The majority of previous works have tended to focus on gaps or more specialized matters within the subject area. This thematic review therefore focuses on the amalgamation of existing literature on the nature of architectural criticism. A keyword search, followed by a filter using inclusion criteria from the Google Scholar Database, identified 52 articles. After a review of these articles, only 26 were found useful. This paper synthesizes and discusses the works of different authors in the areas of types and contexts of architectural criticism. The discussions will benefit future studies on the general nature or characteristics of architectural criticism and can be used as a guideline for highlighting and understanding the key issues in architectural criticism. Since the advent and usage of artificial intelligence approaches in architecture, a significant number of studies have focused on integrating technological solutions to architectural issues. Artificial intelligence applications in architectural design range from intelligent material design to architectural plan solutions. The ubiquity and distribution of research in this field, as well as the rising use of artificial intelligence techniques to solve design challenges, require an analytical classification of the essential literature review. This article presents a descriptive and analytical review of the work on artificial intelligence applications in architecture. A strong review has been made that identifies and addresses the gaps in artificial intelligence and architecture; and the literature review is transformed into statistical plots. The study's findings indicate a growing interest in artificial intelligence in the field of architecture. There is a need for novel research to be conducted in these areas using advanced technology and techniques.

Green mindfulness seems to play an important role in promoting sustainability in architecture, but discrete areas of knowledge are still widely unknown. This study aimed to explore the publications that exist on the nexus between green mindfulness and architecture, and to find the architectural features that tend to foster green mindfulness. The study conducted a systematic literature review by searching publications from databases including Scopus, Google Scholar, and Thai Journals Online in September 2022. Five authors—one architectural researcher, two architectural professors, and two architects—independently reviewed the full-length articles to confirm their accuracy and objectivity. Eight articles were selected for examination by descriptive analysis showing the publication year, source, and citations of the articles. Thematic analysis was used to find the characteristics of the architectural atmosphere with the potential for fostering green mindfulness. Finally, only one study was found that was truly concerned with architecture and green mindfulness. This publication showed that mass and volume are associated with biophilic design, fascination with biophilic design, and affiliation with biophilic design. Material and object refer to natural material; light is in reference to natural light; and landscape and viewpoint suggest plants, greenery, and natural views, while details regarding color and sound were not explored.

There is a boom in life science research and laboratory development in many areas of the country. And the speed of that development has accelerated since the COVID-19 pandemic. A life science facility may look like a traditional office building, but the sound emitted from the rooftop mechanical equipment associated with spaces occupied by pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies is distinct. A sound study was prepared for permitting the reconstruction of a major mixed-use redevelopment in an urbanized area of greater Boston. The redevelopment included retail, office, laboratory, residential and hotel uses amongst multiple buildings that would occur over several years. The complexity of the project required the collaboration of the developer, architectural and mechanical design teams, and acoustical consultants, to ensure that the cumulative sound impacts from all the buildings' future rooftop mechanical equipment did not exceed the local noise ordinance once the redevelopment was completed. The sound study also allowed the buildings to later be customized for future life science tenants. This paper will present the framework developed for each design team to allow the project to demonstrate compliance by establishing a noise budget.

Architectural tectonics which has a meaningful relationship with aesthetic and construction aspects in buildings is still sometimes understood separately from one another. In addition to the need for architectural practice and education, in this context, this article seeks to enrich the meaning of architectural tectonics by exploring and synthesizing meaning from leading online and architectural dictionaries as well as various libraries of journals, proceedings, reports, and architectural books. Tectonics in architectural research and design still needs to be explored where this concept can be useful in the design process because it does not separate structure and aesthetics in architecture. In this study, it is known that there have been various theories from architectural experts about the architectural tectonic theory from 1781 to 2022. This research is a literature review method with a systematic review method with synthesis results through narrative (qualitative) techniques from analogy processes and meaning synthesis. The results of this study, among others, produce the meaning of tectonic in synthesis 1, namely architectural tectonics in aspects of the appearance on the surface, aspects of tectonics processes, and aspects of internal factors. Meanwhile, in synthesis 2, other aspects were produced outside of the three aspects in synthesis 1.

It is evident that, due to population growth, future urbanization and urban growth are inevitable. It is estimated that the food supply demand of future urban centers will grow, which will place an additional burden on the agriculture sector to produce more food. It is projected that securing the food supply chain for future urban centers will be a challenge. Urban agriculture can be regarded as a remedy for possible future challenges that the global food system will face. It might be able to reduce the future burden on the agriculture sector. This research proposes that urban rooftop agriculture, as a subset of urban agriculture, can produce local fresh food in dense urban environments. The principal aim of this research is to suggest a series of design recommendations for architects interested in designing residential buildings capable of rooftop food production. This research attempts to highlight the specific design recommendations and the principal limitations regarding designing residential rooftop farms. To extract the data for developing the proposed design recommendations and limitations, a review of the literature within the fields of urban agriculture, building-integrated agriculture, and horticulture was conducted. Based on the literature review results, this research suggests that the following three types of farming methods can be developed on residential rooftops: (1) open-air rooftop food production, (2) “low-tech” rooftop greenhouses, and (3) “high-tech” rooftop greenhouses. In addition, factors that can be considered principal limitations are suggested. In sum, this research proposes that current and future residential buildings can be designed so that their rooftops are utilized as farms. In this way, such buildings can contribute to delivering local fresh food to current and future metropolitan dwellers.

Criticism, or "to criticize" derives from the Greek krinein meant to distinguish, which is to separate, to silt, to make a distinction. The word "theory" comes from the philosophical Latin term "theoria" meaning spectator, while in modern days means the attempt to decide architectural right and wrong on a purely intellectual base. Pedagogically architecture students participating in a review learn from whoever provides useful criticism benefiting from critiques or reviews. This research in comparison to the ones that went through focuses on Architectural Criticism and Architectural Theory and which one stems from the other, their significance in architectural education in form of crit or review and shows a road map of how reviews are to take place by their different constituents. The purpose of the paper is to see whether the architectural theory is stemming from architectural criticism and whether it’s employed in architectural education. The methodology of this paper depends on both theoretical and analytical studies through three major fields; architectural criticism, architectural theory, and the analytical study of architectural education in form of critique or review. Finally, the paper concludes by linking architectural education mostly in its architectural design projects critique or review form with architectural theory and its dependence upon architectural criticism.

This article discusses the main concept of sustainable tourism to comprehend the terminology on definition, aspects, and main concept. Furthermore, the discussion continues how architecture plays an important part in achieving the sustainability of tourist attraction areas, and the practical ways that have been done from an architectural perspective. The discussion on the architecture subject is divided into 2 parts: the heritage buildings and new buildings, and how the architectural decision in those areas plays a part in supporting sustainable tourism. In heritage building tourism, it is important to ensure the building is in good condition physically and functional. Adaptive reuse is mainly being used to revitalize heritage buildings. In new buildings, several ways can be done to support sustainability in tourism and it's usually by designing an environmentally low negative impact building's design. If these strategies are applied in building design, it is possible to develop a tourism area that emphasizes the concept of sustainability.

Architectural education has come a long way since the first formal school of architecture, École des Beaux-Arts, was started at Paris, France in 1816. 21st century architecture is constantly evolving through changes in technology, and now in 2020-’21, COVID-19 pandemic has brought the concept of architectural education going online. Due to the forced disruption to the traditional pedagogical environment, a new pedagogical paradigm has been established through online theory and studio classes. This has brought about a challenging design pedagogy where teachers and students are reaping the benefits of technological advancement but without any prior training. This in turn has raised the question, how can architecture be taught effectively through virtual means? In response, this paper conducts literature review and a questionnaire survey amongst students and teachers of Chandigarh region on experiences of virtual teaching in the field of architecture and seeks to address the issues concerning virtual architectural pedagogy.

As one of the most important design tasks of building design, space layout design affects the building energy performance (BEP). In order to investigate the effect, a literature review of relevant papers was performed. Ten relevant articles were found and reviewed in detail. First, a methodology for studying the effects of space layouts on BEP were proposed regarding design variables, energy indicators and BEP calculation methods, and the methodologies used in the 10 articles were reviewed. Then, the effects of space layouts on energy use and occupant comfort were analysed separately. The results show that the energy use for heating, cooling, lighting and ventilation is highly affected by space layouts, as well as thermal and visual comfort. The effects of space layouts on energy use are higher than on occupant comfort. By changing space layouts, the resulting reductions in the annual final energy for heating and cooling demands were up to 14% and 57%, respectively, in an office building in Sweden. The resulting reductions in the lighting demand of peak summer and winter were up to 67% and 43%, respectively, for the case of an office building in the UK, and the resulting reduction in the air volume supplied by natural ventilation was 65%. The influence of other design parameters, i.e., occupancy and window to wall ratio, on the effects of space layouts on BEP was also identified.

Based on the results of the research in 2004, this article aims to suggest a guideline to developan appropriate approach of sustainable architectural design in Thailand. Rather than creating a checklist, this article points out the areas that are commonly ignored by the current approaches of Thai sustainablearchitecture. The analysis is based upon literature review of books, articles, and reports coveringissues related to sustainable development and sustainable, ecological, and green architecture. Theprogress of sustainable development and sustainable architectural design at national and internationallevels are reviewed and analyzed with an intention to compare sustainable architectural design inThailand with a concept of sustainable development and the international theory of sustainable design.Three images that characterize different approaches of sustainable architectural design in Thailand arebuilding technology/energy conservation, culture/vernacular architecture, and community and urbanplanning. According to the study, the approaches of Thai sustainable design are limited and cannotcapture the whole idea of the international concerns toward sustainability. In order to make sustainablearchitectural design in Thailand more comparable to the international approach as well as suitable forThai context and the country’s policy, such as the “Sufficiency Economy” concept, sustainablearchitectural design in Thailand should be more developed and integrate those international concernswith Thailand’s approaches.
