Texto completo da fonteThe following thesis compares occupation and technological analysis so as to check if the modalities of territorial and resource managements were submitted to synchronic and diachronic variability during the Mesolithic. Integration of data into an international context has allowed to discern structural systems. During ethnographic studies, identification of spatial structures have led us tu use field-walking. Every point of information was inventoried, and also defined in accordance with the technological characteristics of the knapped stones, so as to recognize their position in the "chaîne opératoire". The groups occupied graphs, defined in negative by non-occupied zones. These permanents traits in the structure of networks are poles apart from any variability in management of the geological potential. Starting at the middle Mesolithic, the changes testify to an adaptation of the resources of networks and a partition of territories, perhaps initiatory to a spatial competition

Texto completo da fonteThe subject of the present doctoral work is based on the observation made during the research we carried out for the Master’s degree, namely that archaeologists find it difficult to integrate economic approaches into their data. Indeed, they prefer to turn to social science, ethnography and geography than to economics which is not part of the resources they mobilise. Raw materials seemed to us to be a pertinent angle to start with because they make it possible to come to grips with the internal economic circuits of a chrono-cultural space. That is why we chose to study salt and iron in the geographical area encompassing Lorraine and Baden-Württemberg in the first and second Iron Ages (6th-1st centuries BC). Salt and iron are both crucial resources, each in their own way, with precise supply and demand mechanisms which lead to specific markets. We investigated what production and consumption data can reveal about protohistoric economies

Texto completo da fonteThis new work on chipped stone of Çatalhöyük-West offers the first study of lithic productions of Early Chalcolithic (ECA IV/6000-5500 cal. BC), obsidian and other raw materials included. The question of the origin of non-obsidian raw materials but also the concepts of territories exploited and exchanges are discussed. A pluri-disciplinary approach, combining the tools of geology, geomorphology, mineralogy (infrared spectroscopy) and lithic technology, permits to demonstrate a real management of raw material procurement of chipped stone emphasizing different spheres of procurement based on different ways of acquiring raw materials. Specialized productions on obsidian and quality flint stand alongside domestic production, expedient and opportunistic, on local bad quality flint

Texto completo da fonteThe recent excavations at La Quina offer the possibility of analysing the long sequence of this site, one of the rare examples in the Aquitaine Basin where a succession of several recent and final Middle Palaeolithic techno-complexes can be found : Quina Mousterian, Mousterian of Acheulean Tradition (MTA), Denticulate Mousterian. The aim of the diachronically focused techno-typological study is, on the one hand, to address on a new basis the question of the diversity and the specificity of the Quina Mousterian, and, on the other hand, to include the Denticulate Mousterian and MTA levels in our understanding of the techno-economic changes that take place at the end of the Middle Palaeolithic. In this respect, the study is relevant to the debate about the Middle to Upper Palaeolithic transition. Another essential aspect of this work bears on raw material transfers, and thus on Neanderthal mobility within the Charente basin. Based on regional geological surveys and collected samples, sourcing of the flints used at La Quina highlights the selection of high quality raw materials, conveyed to the site in very large quantities over distances exceeding 20 km. A connection is made between this particular provisioning strategy and the available faunal data. As a result, when taking other Charente sites into consideration, various suggestions of patterned seasonal mobility are put forward, thus addressing the issue of Neanderthal foresight and planning depth in the recent and final Middle Palaeolithic

Texto completo da fonteThis thesis provides an overview on the evolution of commodity markets and focuses on the price behaviour in both the commodity physical and the financial derivatives markets. Instead of directly analysing regulation in the commodity markets, this thesis highlights the market changes and specific market behaviour, which gives potential implications for market regulation.Main results of thesis. This research on regulation of commodity markets has been conducted within two different markets: commodity physical markets and commodity derivatives markets. Results in physical markets confirm the evidence of jump in agricultural commodity prices. Price volatility varies with time and is not constant. Commodity markets’ –at least agricultural markets’- prices oscillated during the period 2007/2008, which coincided with financial crisis. Relatively high frequent and small jumps in commodity prices are probably due to financial market factors instead of market fundamentals. The implication of these results in risk management of agricultural cooperatives is that, although taking into account jump in risk measure, such as VaR does not out-perform traditional VaR with normal distribution. Considering this kind of extreme price variation can be complementary for risk managers when facing a highly volatile commodity market. Findings for financial derivatives markets lead to two conclusions.Firstly, commodity index funds are confirmed again as having a short-term impact on futures prices in most products. Based on the theoretical conclusion about the intermediary role of inventory on the impact of speculation on the commodity market, we have found that commodity index can influence commodity futures prices without necessarily passing through inventory changes, which is probably due to price-inelasticity. Secondly, in relation to the impact of central bank announcements on commodity prices, the study shows that the central bank can be an alternative regulator to influence the commodity market. Additionally, it shows that commodity prices include the information from macroeconomic factors, such as currency rate and inflation rate

Texto completo da fonteCommodity prices rise observed during the 2000s being concomitant with the increasing presence of financial agents has sparked the researchers’ interest. This price increase occurred while commodity markets have been transformed by new financial instruments or larger investments in these markets. The first chapter of this thesis are studying the impact on commodities of Exchange-Traded Products (ETPs) whose purpose is to provide investors a passive exposure to commodities. During this study, it is shown that the mechanism (called creation / redemption) used to deliver the performance of the underlying commodity to the investors has an impact on the price of the underlying asset, its volatility and its correlation with the stock market. The second chapter demonstrates that ETPs have become major contributors to the price discovery process whereas traditionally this function was performed by the futures market. The final chapter of this PhD thesis is studying seasonality in both the prices and positions of different types of agents on the futures market for agricultural commodities. The results show that seasonal positions in the futures market have been changed by the increased presence of financial agents. This thesis quantifies and demonstrates that new investment vehicles and an increasing number of positions of financial investors in the futures market have changed the financial and fundamental characteristics of commodity markets
