Abstract While love passes for being a feeling born in the West in the twelfth century, love poetry, in its declamatory or sung form, appeared in the sixth century among the Bedouin of the Arabian desert before flourishing in the Arabic cities, then Persian and finally in Europe. Love passion, excessive in essence, can be said only in excess with its joys and its distress. The man who experiences this state of passion is feminized, finding in the medium of poetry a socially legitimate space to express his emotions, including jealousy, nostalgia or blasphemy. Singing the beauty of the beloved and the disorder she or he inspires is a way of acknowledging his emotional vulnerability and also a mode of love conquest. But if the language of predation can be found in heterosexual and homosexual Arabic or Persian masculine poetry, such language is absent from feminine poetry, this difference revealing the asymmetrical polarity of desire according to gender. Résumé Alors que l'amour passe pour être un sentiment né en Occident au douzième siècle, la poésie amoureuse, sous sa forme déclamatoire ou chantée, est apparue dès le sixième siècle chez les Bédouins du désert d'Arabie avant de fleurir dans le monde arabe citadin, puis persan et enfin occidental. L'amour passion, excessif par essence, ne pouvant se dire que dans la démesure, le discours amoureux est l'expression toujours hyperbolique du pathos avec ses joies et ses détresses. L'homme qui éprouve cet état de passion est féminisé, trouvant dans le médium de la poésie un espace d'expression socialement autorisé pour exprimer ses émotions, y compris celles relatives à la jalousie, à la nostalgie ou au blasphème. Chanter la beauté de l'objet aimé et le trouble qu'il inspire est autant une manière d'avouer sa vulnérabilité affective qu'un mode de conquête amoureuse. Mais si le langage de la prédation est patent dans la poésie hétérosexuelle ou homosexuelle, un tel langage est absent de la poésie féminine, différence révélatrice de la polarité asymétrique du désir selon qu'on est homme ou femme.

Résumé Parmi les usages du vers attestés dans la culture arabe classique, thème d’une journée d’étude organisée en 2017 à l’INALCO, notre étude a retenu celui consistant à faire du vers un šāhid, ou « citation probante » (Gilliot, 1996). En effet, de nombreuses sciences arabes, au premier plan desquelles figurent les sciences du langage (grammaire, lexicologie, philologie…), ont eu recours aux šawāhid pour illustrer un fait de langue, l’emploi d’un mot rare ou une tournure syntaxique. Dans ce cadre, les vers sont présentés hors de tout contexte, qu’il s’agisse de celui de ses conditions de production ou de celui du poème dans lequel il s’insère. Pour mener à bien ce travail, nous nous appuierons sur le traité d’Abū Ḥātim al-Siǧistānī (m. 255/869) consacré au palmier, Kitāb al-Naḫl. Après avoir procédé à un classement des šawāhid, nous observerons, successivement, les citations sans rapport avec l’objet du traité, le palmier, celles où ce dernier apparaît comme métaphore ou comparant et, enfin, celles dont il est l’objet principal. Notre objectif sera de montrer comment ces citations s’organisent en un réseau textuel qui se superpose – ou se croise – avec le texte du lexicologue. Que nous disent-elles du palmier, qui n’est pas abordé par l’auteur dans son ouvrage savant ? Et, en particulier, que nous apprennent-elles sur le statut accordé au palmier dans le système éthique des Arabes ?

Cette contribution se veut une réflexion sur la question de la citadinité dans la région de Mazouna. En effet, ancienne cité se caractérisant par différents types de citadinités : berbère, arabe, andalouse et turque, la ville de Mazouna est considérée dans les discours médiatique et scientifique ainsi que dans la littérature sociologique et historique comme étant un foyer civilisationnel. Mis à part les aspects socio-historiques qui témoignent de cette vieille citadinité, je m’étais interrogée sur les aspects linguistiques pour vérifier si, à l’instar des anciennes cités (dites citadines), le parler de Mazouna se particularise par des traits citadins ou dits pré-hilaliens. Abstract This contribution is intended to be a reflection on the question of citadinity in the Mazouna region. Indeed, an ancient city characterized by different types of citadinity: Berber, Arab, Andalusian and Turkish, the city of Mazouna is considered in media and scientific discourse as well as in sociological and historical literature as being a civilizational center. Aside from the socio-historical aspects which bear witness to this old citadinity, I wondered about the linguistic aspects to verify if, like the old cities (called citadines), the speech of Mazouna is particularized by traits pre-hilalians.

Divers processus en cours dans la langue première, telle l’atténuation de la dichotomie traditionnelle des parlers arabes (citadin / bédouin) en milieu urbain, reflètent une phase transitoire de la langue première des arabophones.

El presente estudio ofrece un estado de la cuestión de la representación del terror rural o Folk Horror dentro de las artes audiovisuales, poniendo el foco en el medio cinematográfico, aunque sin dejar de lado otros modelos audiovisuales de representación más contemporáneos, como es el caso de los videojuegos. Para ello, se ha llevado a cabo un análisis diacrónico y eminentemente cualitativo de este fenómeno narrativo y estético, que responde a un subgénero dentro del terror compuesto por una serie de rasgos definitorios y a la vez complejos. Como metodología empleada, se ha aplicado la revisión bibliográfica, además del breve estudio de caso de determinadas obras que son citadas a lo largo del texto que, sin embargo, pretende plasmar una radiografía más general y actualizada del Folk Horror en la esfera de las artes audiovisuales.

Les citations coraniques figurant dans les documents papyrologiques légaux et privés n’ont pas suffisamment attiré l’attention des spécialistes du Coran qui les intègrent rarement dans leur recherche. Dans cette perspective nous nous sommes intéressé aux deux versets de la sourate 65 cités dans une lettre familiale datée du tout début du iie siècle de l’hégire : « Man yattaqi Llāha yaǧʿal lahu [min amrihi] maḫraǧan (2) wa-yarzuqhu min ḥayṯu lā yaḥtasibu (3) ». Au regard de cette date qui se trouve être l’une des plus reculées qu’ait porté un document mentionnant des passages coraniques, s’est imposée à nous l’éventualité d’une lecture coranique excentrique, probablement abandonnée par la codification ultérieure du Coran. Tout en tenant compte du contexte discursif de la citation, cette étude s’efforce de vérifier cette hypothèse en recourant aussi bien aux sources traditionnelles traitant des sciences coraniques (tafsīr, qirāʾāt, asbāb al-nuzūl, etc.) qu’aux dernières publications des fragments du Coran récemment mis au jour.

El hecho de que el cineasta estadounidense Terrence Malick se dedicara durante unos años a la filosofía académica y tradujera al inglés el opúsculo De la esencia del fundamento de Martin Heidegger es tomado por algunos autores como clave interpretativa de su cine. Este artículo parte del concepto de mundo del filósofo alemán, tema central del citado opúsculo, y sus presuntas influencias en la filmografía del director con el objetivo de poner en duda esta afinidad y sugerir, en cambio, la hipótesis de que las películas de Malick están alentadas por una visión del mundo de raíces cristianas. La probabilidad de esta hipótesis será mostrada por una vía negativa, detectando algunas carencias de los estudios que vinculan a Heidegger con Malick, y por una positiva, analizando el significado de sus filmes desde la experiencia de conversión religiosa que estos parecen suscitar en los espectadores.

Cette thèse comble un vide dans le domaine de la dialectologie maghrébine, en proposant une description en synchronie de la phonologie et de la morphologie de l’arabe parlé à Kairouan, en Tunisie. Elle présente et analyse les résultats de plusieurs enquêtes de terrain. L’approche fonctionnaliste de cette thèse se base sur le modèle des études en dialectologie comparée les plus solides et consiste à analyser l’arabe kairouanais en le comparant à d’autres variétés d’arabe qui lui sont géographiquement et typologiquement proches. L'analyse variationniste des données linguistiques est également utilisée, prenant en compte les paramètres sociolinguistiques des locuteurs. Cette étude s’insère également dans le débat sur la réévaluation de la classification traditionnelle de l’arabe maghrébin. Dans le cadre de cette problématique, je remets en cause la validité de l’origine monogénétique kairounaise de l’arabe maghrébin de première couche et la définition des « parlers kairouanais » proposée par David Cohen. Afin de mieux cerner la démonstration linguistique, je m’intéresse aux événements historiques et sociaux majeurs qui ont accompagné le début des deux couches d’arabisation au Maghreb (VIIe - XIe siècle). En outre, j’analyse le développement diachronique et la distribution synchronique de trois isoglosses de l’arabe de première couche dans des variétés anciennes et contemporaines au Maghreb. En somme, la description grammaticale de l’arabe kairouanais, la focalisation socio-historique sur le passé de la ville, ainsi que la comparaison diachronique et diatopique contribuent à montrer la faiblesse de l’origine monogénétique kairouanaise de l’arabe maghrébin de première coucheThis dissertation provides a comprehensive description of the phonology and morphology of the Arabic variety spoken in the city of Kairouan (Tunisia). The phonological and morphological description results from the analysis of narrative texts and questionnaires I collected during field research. My description is based on the functionalism methodological approach commonly applied in the most significant studies of descriptive and comparative Maghrebi Arabic dialectology. This approach also includes comparative remarks on geographically and typologically related varieties of Arabic. Moreover, I embrace the variationist analysis based on different sociolinguistic parameters. Furthermore, this dissertation aims at contributing to the debate about the reassessment of the traditional classification of Maghrebi Arabic. It questions the validity of the monogenetic origin of first-layer Maghrebi Arabic from ancient Kairouani Arabic and David Cohen’s theory on the parlers kairouanais. In doing so, this study focuses on the major historical phases and social phenomena occurring in the Maghreb (7th - 11th centuries) in correspondence with the beginning of the two so-called waves of Arabization. From a comparative point of view, I analyze the diachronic development and the synchronic distribution of three isoglosses in first-layer Arabic across present-day and more ancient varieties. This socio-historical focus and diachronic and diatopic comparison of this study contribute to showing the weakness of the Kairouani monogenetic origin of first-layer Maghrebi

Notre travail, fruit d'une enquete ethnologique sur le marche de sanaa (capitale de la republique arabe du yemen),concerne l'organisation professionnelle des corps de metiers, l'echelle hierarchique des metiers et des groupes de statuts representes en ville. Par ce biais, nous avons tente d'identifier et d'analyser les fondements et les composantes de la societe citadine et de rendre compte des registres relationnels qui la relie a son environnement tribal. Pour ce faire, nous avons etudie l'importance et la place du souk dans le systeme tribal avant de reveler les racines historiques de l'autonomisme urbain. Celui-ci possede un cadre institutionnel l'organisation coutumiere de la ville et du marche. Le marche constitua au 19eme siecle le centre poli tique du pouvoir citadin qui se dota alors de ses institutions. Le marche dont l'historique des transformations socio-economiques sous les regimes imamite et republicain a ete retrace dans notre etude, representa durant des siecles le vecteur principal d'integration a la societe citadine pour les immigrants ruraux. I have studied the professional organization of the market, the social ranking of the occupational categories living in the city. By this mean, i tried to identify and to analyse its foundations and the components of the townsmen's society and grasp its rela tions with its tribal surroundings. To achieve this goal, i have studied the importance and the place of the market in the tribal system before revealing the historical roots of the urban auto nomism. It has an institutional setting which is the customary organization of the market and the town. While outlining the history of the social and economical changes which affected the market, i have conceived it as a place of integration in the townsmen's society, as a territory of socialization where the values of the townsmen's ethos are conveyed and where a great part of the town's social networks originate

La redistribution des citadins à l'intérieur du Grand Caire est un phénomène dont l'ampleur ne cesse de croître depuis les années soixante-dix. Les migrations intra-urbaines dépassent aujourd'hui en intensité les migrations campagne-capitale, devenues marginales, et l'observation de l'évolution démographique montre que la ville alimente de plus en plus elle-même sa croissance. Animée par des dynamiques internes complexes, l'agglomération cairote se transforme au gré des stratégies résidentielles mises en œuvre par les citadins autant que par les interventions des pouvoirs publics et des planificateurs. Fondé sur une démarche résolument qualitative, ce travail s'appuie sur l'analyse des itinéraires ordinaires des habitants de quatre quartiers populaires du Caire dont les modes de constitution et de peuplement diffèrent.
Temps de l'établissement en ville, celui des incertitudes mais aussi des adaptations et des expériences, temps des ancrages, celui des compétences à s'approprier l'espace et à le modeler pour lui donner un caractère résolument urbain, temps des recompositions sociales et spatiales qui portent en germe des mécanismes d'insertion ou d'exclusion urbaine : au-delà des trajectoires, toujours singulières, qui constituent ici un outil de travail plutôt qu'une fin en soi de la recherche, ce sont des processus de territorialisation ainsi que les multiples configurations socio-spatiales qui en découlent qui sont mis au jour pour tenter de comprendre au mieux les relations entre les citadins et leur ville.

L’Arabie Saoudite, depuis la découverte du pétrole dans les années 1950, a connue une urbanisation brutale, entraînant de grands changements sociaux et spatiaux. Djeddah illustre cette mutation de la société saoudienne. De village côtier au milieu du XXe siècle, elle est devenue une grande agglomération, et cela en quelques décennies. C’est dire l’expansion phénoménale enregistrée par la ville.Mais une urbanisation aussi rapide et massive ne peut que susciter de graves problèmes de gestion, de fonctionnement et d’équipement. Pour y faire face, les autorités ont eu recours à la planification comme instrument de prévision et d’anticipation. Toutefois, les différents plans élaborés par les professionnels de l’urbain, se sont très vite révélés inadaptés. Ainsi, la population de la ville n’a cessé de s'amplifier et les surfaces urbanisées se sont étalées dans tous les sens, rendant de ce fait aléatoire toute approche en termes de « modèle » conçu et préétabli.Ces indications révèlent que la ville n’est pas un simple « objet », mais un rapport social, donc un espace en mouvement. Dès lors, si notre souci consiste à appréhender la façon dont les pouvoirs publics ont conçu la structuration du milieu urbain, les méthodes et les concepts utilisés, les projets et programmes envisagés, il importe également de décrypter les pratiques des habitants engendrant, selon les cas, une évolution harmonieuse ou chaotique du tissu urbain. Posé sous cet angle, ce point traduit notre problématique. Celle-ci consiste, plus précisément, à savoir comment les divers acteurs, en particulier les « citadins ordinaires », interfèrent dans le processus d’expansion et de production de la ville. Dans cette approche de la ville, il s’est avéré nécessaire d’élaborer une base de données, d’effectuer une analyse cartographique et de prendre appui sur l’observation de terrainSince the discovery of oil in the 1950s, Saudi Arabia has experienced a sudden Urbanization, causing major social and spatial changes. Jeddah demonstrates this transformation of the Saudi society. In only few decades, this coastal village turned into a large city in the middle of the twentieth century. This in turn, has marked a phenomenal growth recorded by the city. This rapid and massive urbanization has created serious problems in terms of management, operation and equipments. Authorities, in response, have devised planning as a means of prediction and anticipation. However, different plans that have been suggested by professionals in Jeddah were not sufficient. Thus, the city population has continued to grow and urban areas have expanded in all directions, and therefore making the designed model and all other approaches uncertain. Therefore, it is important to understand that, the city is not just an "object" but a growing space where there is an active social relationship amongst the population. So, if we are to understand how the government designed urban areas, methods and concepts used, projects and programs planned, it is appropriate to consider at the same time what the resulting population will look like while developing the urban fabrics. Our main problem from these points of view is more precisely to comprehend how the various factors, especially "the ordinary citizen", involved in the whole process of expansion and city creation work. As far as this approach is concerned, it is necessary to develop a database, build and analyze maps and also to perform field observation in order to deal with the problems in all aspects

Fondée sur une enquête ethnographique à Riyad, cette thèse montre comment les jeunes Saoudiennes, confrontées à de multiples contraintes limitant leur mobilité et leurs activités, négocient de nouveaux styles de vie à travers leur accès à quatre types d’espaces (campus universitaire féminin, espaces de travail, shopping malls et espaces religieux). Ce processus trace parmi elles de nouvelles lignes d’inclusion et d’exclusion et les soumet à d’autres normes. La première partie retrace l’émergence de ces espaces à travers la ségrégation des sexes entérinée au moment du Réveil islamique et du boom pétrolier, les injonctions d’experts promouvant l’activité professionnelle des Saoudiennes, partiellement appliquées depuis 2003, dans le contexte du discours de réforme du gouvernement ; enfin la libéralisation économique engendrant l’ouverture de nouveaux espaces de consommation. La deuxième partie montre comment les jeunes Saoudiennes négocient l’accès à ces espaces : la mobilité étant très coûteuse du fait de contraintes de divers ordres, elle devient un style de vie impliquant l’exercice d’un travail salarié. Le développement personnel, discours consensuel, s’avère central dans la légitimation de nouvelles activités pensées en termes d’épanouissement et de réalisation de soi. La troisième partie décrit les interactions entre les jeunes citadines au sein des espaces partagés : à travers les rassemblements homosociaux, la diffusion des conduites transgressives des règles de discipline islamique officielle et la mise en scène du consumérisme, se jouent à la fois l’apparition épisodique d’un « nous » et des luttes de classement aboutissant à la réinvention des féminitésBased on ethnographic fieldwork conducted in Riyadh, this dissertation shows how young Saudi women, confronted to multiple constraints which limit their mobility and activities, negotiate new lifestyles through their access to four types of spaces: the female university campus, workplaces, shopping malls and religious spaces. This process draws new lines of inclusion and exclusion, and subjects them to other norms. The first part recounts the emergence of these spaces through sex segregation, which has been strictly applied since the Islamic Awakening and oil boom; the experts’ injunctions in favour of Saudi women’s professional activity, partly put into practice since 2003, in the context of the government’s discourse of reform; and economic liberalization, which has led to the opening of new spaces for consumption. The second part shows how young Saudi women negotiate their access to these spaces: since various constraints make their moving in the city especially costly, mobility becomes a lifestyle for which a paid job is necessary. The discourse of self improvement, consensual and widespread, proves to be central in the legitimization of new female activities interpreted in terms of personal development and achievement. The third part describes the interactions between young women within the spaces they share: through homosocial gatherings, the spread of behaviours which transgress official Islamic rules and the adoption of consumerist self-presentations, they episodically identify with a common “us”, but also reinvent femininities through classification struggle

Les jardins publics dans le monde arabe sont des équipements récents, inspirés ou imposés par l'Occident. Leur présence modifie le tissu urbain, l'image de la ville, et on leur assigne un rôle prophylactique en raison d'une assimilation largement admise entre la pureté et la salubrité et la "nature". La pratique de ces "autres espaces" permet aux valeurs et aux nouvelles tendances des sociétés de prendre place dans les espaces publics des villes. Espaces exutoires, de la mixité, l'intimité, de la fête, de l'ordinaire et de l'exceptionnel, ils connaissent depuis les années soixante des mutations. Devenus "espaces verts", ils ont souffert des périodes de forte croissance qu'ont connu nos trois villes. La tendance est aujourd'hui double : d'une part, privatisés et suréquipés, certains semblent perdre leur caractère d'espace public ; d'autres, revalorisés par le récent intérêt au cadre de vie et une sensibilité à l'écologie, semblent pouvoir résoudre tous les maux de la ville, de l'environnement naturel et des sociétés.

Depuis le début des années soixante-dix, la ville de Sanaa connaît une croissance urbaine fulgurante générant des dynamiques territoriales inédites. Aujourd'hui, celles-ci ont pour principal théâtre les espaces périphériques, voire certaines marges physiques de l'agglomération. On assiste ainsi à l'émergence de centralités périurbaines qui se singularisent à la fois par leur capacité à polariser les activités économiques et à se constituer en espaces-clés de la vie sociale. Cette thèse analyse la fabrique et la pratique de ces centralités émergentes, dont la mise en place modifie autant la structure générale du Grand Sanaa que les rapports identitaires de la société urbaine à son espace. À l'origine produits par des initiatives privées et des pratiques citadines, ces nouveaux centres redéfinissent actuellement l'ensemble des stratégies d'acteurs. Plus encore, il semble s'y inventer de nouveaux cadres d'urbanité : cette recherche se consacre à en préciser les fondements.

Developing Chapter 1’s findings on pre-Islamic Arabian society, this chapter proposes a new origin point for Arab communal consciousness. Chapter 2 seeks the first groups of people who called themselves ‘Arabs’ and explores how those people can be identified from historical records. We begin by appraising the evidence about Arabic language: when and where did it evolve and to what extent does Arabic-language use delineate Arab communal identity? We evaluate the surprising paucity of pre-Islamic Arabic records, and next turn to pre-Islamic poetry to examine its citation of the word ‘Arab’ alongside the senses of community the poets articulate. Pre-Islamic poetic reference to ‘Arabs’ is also almost non-existent, whereas alternative forms of communal identity are clearly expressed, in particular, a people known as Maʿadd. Marshalling theories of ethnogenesis to interpret the evidence, this chapter sheds new light on pre-Islamic Arabia’s fragmented communal boundaries. Chapter 2 closes with early Islamic-era poetry where poets first begin to call themselves ‘Arabs’, suggesting that Arab ethnogenesis was a result, not a cause of the rise of Islam.

Every nation has narratives or stories about what it believes to be its history, but such narratives typically contain mythologies that are historically inaccurate. In the case of Israel, the central mythology is that “the Arabs never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity.” The reality is very different: it is Israel that has been responsible for missing or deliberately sabotaging repeated opportunities for peace with both the Arab states and the Palestinians. The audience for the book includes interested general readers, college and graduate students taking courses in the conflict, academicians and journalists writing about the conflict, and policymakers. The general methodology, organization, sources, citation methods, and chapter-by-chapter structure of the book are discussed.

This chapter considers the Qatar-based Egyptian Yusuf al-Qaradawi's early interventions in the incipient Arab revolutions through a study of his religious arguments in favor of the Tunisian revolution shortly after the successful ouster of Ben Ali. Studying Qaradawi's statements on his then regular Al Jazeera show, al-Sharīʿa wa-l-Ḥayāh, the chapter explores Qaradawi's qualified defense of the self-immolation of Mohamed Bouazizi which caused the protests that led to the revolution. Qaradawi justifies peaceful revolutionary protest against tyranny in Tunisia on the grounds of the Islamic principle of commanding right and forbidding wrong (al-amr bi-l-maʿrūf wa-l-nahy ʿan al-munkar). This principle is explored in some detail in the present chapter alongside his citation of the Qur'an and hadith (reports from the Prophet Muhammad) which he uses to justify opposing autocratic rule. Qatar's support for the revolutions is also briefly considered.

In this chapter I conceptualize the citational hook, a term I use to describe within a cinematic or theatrical narrative, the interpretation of a popular song that imbues the lyrics with new and subversive or transgressive meaning), which is introduced through sing-along performances to Anglophone rock songs in Marjane Satrapi’s film Persepolis (2007) and Wajdi Mouawad’s play Incendies (2003). Working with Judith Butler’s concept of citation, Roland Barthes’s essay ‘The Grain of the Voice,’ and Michel Chion’s analysis of cinematic syncresis, I demonstrate how the performances in Mouawad’s and Satrapi’s respective works can be heard as subversions of French universalist stereotypes of Middle Eastern femininity and masculinity that are linked to the symbols of the veil and the gun. I contextualize the performances through the universalist representations of immigrant men and women in France that have led to strictures on Arab women’s dress and the social marginalization of Arab men. The sing-along performances demonstrate that it is imperative to look beyond received symbols of Middle Eastern women’s oppression and the stereotype of Middle Eastern men as inherently violent and to allow for a broad range of possibilities for how masculinity and femininity are expressed within Middle Eastern ethnic identities.

Abstract Between Cairo’s Citadel and the leafy suburb of Ma’adi, much patron ized by Egypt’s foreign community, there is a fine thirteenth-century mosque and tomb belonging to the Imam al-Shafi’i, the most influential of the early lawyers of Islam and founder of one of the four madhhabs or legal schools. The mosque and its tomb stand out from the labyrinthine streets of the Southern Cemetery, known as the City of the Dead, an area which is in fact a good deal livelier than its name suggests. The fine stone tombs in which the Cairenes traditionally bury their dead are really houses built from the same Muqattam limestone as the pyramids, according to the standard Arab pattern consisting of a simple courtyard flanked by rooms and an open loggia. The deceased are buried either in vaults beneath the courtyard, the steps of which are usually covered, except when needed to admit a new occupant, or beneath stone cenotaphs with pillars standing fore and aft, like masts of a ship. In the past the rooms were occupied by the bawwabs or doorkeepers employed by the wealthier families to protect the tombs and such valuables as the silver and plate brought out on special occasions―the night after Ramadan, the Prophet’s Birthday or the anniversary of someone’s death. Despite Islam’s discouragement of mortuary cults, many ancient pharaonic practices have survived in Egypt, a fact which is hardly to be marvelled at considering that the pharaonic religion lasted at least three times as long as Islam’s fourteen centuries.

The enlargement of Muslim domination to include Morocco, Spain and eventually Sicily meant that the southern half of the Mediterranean became a Muslim-ruled lake, offering splendid new opportunities for trade. Jewish merchants emerge most prominently from the records. Whether this is an accident of survival, or whether they were more successful than Coptic and Syriac Christians or Muslim townsmen of North Africa, Spain and Egypt is uncertain. There are grounds for thinking that non-Muslim merchants had a distinct advantage. Muslims were constrained by legal rulings that forbade them from living or even trading in infidel lands. Over the centuries this meant that the rulers of Muslim cities in the Mediterranean opened their doors to Christian and Jewish traders, but their Muslim inhabitants were wary of venturing to Italy, Catalonia or Provence. The reason so much is known about the Jewish traders is that hundreds of their letters and business documents have survived in the collection known as the Cairo Genizah. In the mid-seventh century, the Arab invaders of Egypt established their base at Fustat (meaning ‘the Ditch’) on the edge of modern Cairo, and only later moved their capital to the surroundings of the great citadel of New Cairo. Old Cairo, or Fustat, became the base for the city’s Jewish and Coptic population; in the eleventh century one group of Jews rebuilt the Ben Ezra synagogue, incorporating on the upper floor a storeroom, or Genizah, accessible only by ladder, into which they threw and stuffed their discarded papers and manuscripts. They wished to avoid destroying anything that carried the name of God; by extension they did not destroy anything written in Hebrew characters. It has been well said that the Genizah collection is ‘the very opposite of an archive’, because the aim was to throw away documents without destroying them, in effect burying them above ground, rather than to create an accessible room that could be used for systematic reference.

Th e stone fortress of Kilia was erected on the banks of the Danube in the summer of 1479 on the initiative led by Stephen the Great. An inner wall separated it, following the example of the Cetatea Alba, into two distinct parts: the Outer Fortress, which corresponded to the “civil court”, and the Middle Fortress, to which conformed to the “middle court” corresponded. It was joined by the third courtyard, the “garrison courtyard”, which surrounded the old stone citadel. Th e inner citadel corresponded to the “middle court” and the “garrison court”. Th e fourth court, the “court of the citadel” or “court of the military commander”, was bounded by the citadel walls. Among the fl anking towers were the Arsenal Tower, the Weapons Tower, the Commander’s Tower, the Lighthouse Tower, the Bloody Tower, the Prison Tower, the Maiden’s Tower, the Arab Tower, the Wool Tower, the Millet Tower, the Flat Tower, the Cracked Tower, the Biscuit Tower, the Mountain Tower, etc. During the rule of Stephen the Great, ordinary towers appeared, with an inner hollow, “full” towers and “artillery towers”. Th e roads connected the Great Gate of the citadel with three Gates from the water, the Small Gate, the Guild Gate and the Greek Gate. Th e defensive complex of Kilia was conquered by Ottoman troops in July of 1484.

RESUMO A abordagem sistêmica é um processo interdisciplinar, cujo princípio primordial é compreender a interdependência recíproca e relações de todas as áreas e da necessidade de sua integração, permitindo maior aproximação entre os seus limites de estudo. Nesse contexto o olhar sistêmico, da ergonomia, sobretudo no que se refere à segurança, ao conforto e à eficácia de uso, de funcionalidade e de operacionalidade dos objetos, considerando todos os produtos ou sistemas de produtos, como sistema de uso, desde os mais simples aos mais complexos ou sistêmicos, tem como objetivo adequá-los aos seres humanos, tendo em vista as atividades e tarefas exercidas por eles. No que se refere ao design funcional, os conhecimentos da ergonomia, nessa visão sistêmica, relativos à sua metodologia de projeto, são absolutamente necessários, e a sua aplicação aponta a melhor adequação dos produtos aos seus usuários. Como é o caso do vestuário feminino funcional, sobretudo no que se refere a proteção das mamas, que são peças convencionais que necessitam de um correto dimensionamento e especificação dos tecidos e de outros materiais. É um tipo de vestuário que apresenta funcionalidade diversa, como para a proteção física, o aumento do volume da mama, enchimento no bojo de pano, de água, de óleo, estruturado com arame, etc.; para amamentação (sutiã que se abre na frente, em parte ou totalmente); para o design inclusivo (pessoas com deficiência e mobilidade reduzida, no caso de mamas com prótese ou órtese) facilitando com fechamentos e aberturas colocadas em peças de roupas difíceis de manusear, roupas confortáveis e fáceis de vestir. São peças usadas por pessoas com biótipos e percentis antropométricos variáveis e com características corporais que mudam significativamente nas passagens para a adolescência, idade adulta e idosa. As mudanças corporais apresentam diferenças significativas em termos de volume das mamas, nas quais as soluções ergonômicas por uma abordagem sistêmicas que se evidencia mais para a complexidade de uso, são as mais necessárias em termos de atributos como, segurança, conforto, comodidade corporal, facilidade do vestir, funcionalidade, além da estética. Esta pesquisa, embora exploratória e descritiva, não isenta de desafios, tem por objetivo, por meio de dados e informações ergonômicas sistêmicas contribuir com o design funcional, de modo a oferecer subsídios para a confecção de roupas funcionais ou tecnologia vestível, com os atributos citados, respeitando a diversidade e inclusão das pessoas em todas as fases de sua vida, atendendo assim os princípios formais do design.
