Abstract After the Second World War, the penal climate of the Netherlands underwent changes towards humanization. Although this was consistent with the traditionally humane reputation (certainly when viewed from an international comparative perspective1) of existing penal culture, Dutch society as a whole became tolerant and mild as a reaction to the extreme violence of which humanity had shown itself capable during the war. The effects of this development were not lost on penal law. The country set about rebuilding a deeply hurt and severely damaged society. One of the most important aspects for the development of penal law at that time was the emergence of the so-called Utrecht School, which is not to say, of course, that others were not influential too.2

Abstract Isabella Diederiks-Verschoor was one of the first women in academia in the Netherlands and worldwide to significantly shape the field of air and space law. Among others as a co-founder of the International Institute of Space Law and the International Institute of Air and Space Law, and as a teacher at the University of Utrecht, she promoted and popularized the research and teaching of air and particularly space law. This portrait reflects on her work through the eyes of one of her former students, highlighting her impact as a teacher and networker bridging the gaps between academic and professional air and space law institutions. It looks at her personal challenges and resulting vocal advocacy for women’s equality and economic independence through promoting education both in her national context but also within developing economies.

Abstract Rutger Jan van der Gaag grew up in England and France before moving to Holland in 1968. He gained international recognition with research in developmental disorders (autism and ADHD), gender, and psychopathology. After a long tenure at the University Medical Centre in Utrecht and experience as director of training in Psychiatry (Ermelo), he was appointed as a full professor of psychiatry in Nijmegen (2002). He was President of the Netherlands Psychiatric Association (2008–2012) and the Royal Dutch Medical Association (KNMG 2012–2016), serving also on the boards of the European Psychiatric Association, and the Council of the World Medical Association and the European Medical Doctors (CPME). After becoming emeritus professor in Nijmegen (2016), he was appointed professor of psychosomatics and psychotherapy at the Stradina University in Riga Latvia. Currently he is, among others, President of the Netherlands Association for Healthcare Executives, serves on the Executive Board of the University of Paris.

Scholarly literature on the international classroom frequently emphasizes the importance of making implicit beliefs and norms explicit in order to equalize all students’ ability to succeed. However, faculty members from varying cultural contexts may not share the same underlying norms, values, procedures, and educational standards. Likewise, faculty members may differ in educational and disciplinary backgrounds. This study uses interviews to assesses the experiences and academic norms of faculty members teaching in the interdisciplinary English-track of the Media and Culture Studies BA at Utrecht University in the Netherlands. This study finds that the effects of both discipline and culture function invisibly and most participants overestimate the degree of agreement between faculty members about core elements of the curriculum. As a result, we suggest that it is necessary for departments to actively foster awareness of disciplinary and cultural norms and to seek consensus between teachers across the curriculum.

Abstract One of the most important technical aspects in clinical hyperthermia is the ability to measure and/or simulate the 3D temperature fields. Related to that, an essential part is the way in which the complex heat transfer related to vasculature is described. We report here the results of a collaboration between the hyperthermia modeling groups from the UMC Utrecht, The Netherlands, and Duke UMC, USA. Utrecht’s hyperthermia group has developed a flexible, discrete vasculature thermal model (DIVA) (Kotte et al. 1996) that describes the heat transfer related to discrete vasculature. The vasculature was imaged using MR angiography. To account for the smaller vessels that are responsible for the significant bioheat transport, relative perfusion maps measured at Duke using dynamic enhanced-magnetic resonance imaging were used. Alternatively, the VAMP program (Van Leeuwen et al. 1998) was used to artificially generate smaller vasculature. The cases with discretized vasculature were compared to continuum models where either heterogeneous isotropic perfusion, or relative perfusion maps were used. All simulations were compared to MR thermometry data. The conclusion is that for tumors crossed by or near large vessels, a combination of large vessels discretization and perfusion maps yields temperatures that match very well the MR thermometry data.

BackgroundCare recipients in care and welfare are increasingly presenting themselves with complex needs (Huber et al., 2016). An answer to this is the integrated organization of care and welfare in a way that personalized care is the measure (Topol, 2016). The reality, however, is that care and welfare are still mainly offered in a standardized, specialized and fragmented way. This imbalance between the need for care and the supply of care not only leads to under-treatment and over-treatment and thus to less (experienced) quality, but also entails the risk of mis-treatment, which means that patient safety is at stake (Berwick, 2005). It also leads to a reduction in the functioning of citizens and unnecessary healthcare cost (Olsson et al, 2009).Integrated CareIntegrated care is the by fellow human beings experienced smooth process of effective help, care and service provided by various disciplines in the zero line, the first line, the second line and the third line in healthcare and welfare, as close as possible (Ettema et al, 2018; Goodwin et al, 2015). Integrated care starts with an extensive assessment with the care recipient. Then the required care and services in the zero line, the first line, the second line and / or the third line are coordinated between different care providers. The care is then delivered to the person (fellow human) at home or as close as possible (Bruce and Parry, 2015; Evers and Paulus, 2015; Lewis, 2015; Spicer, 2015; Cringles, 2002).AimSupport societal participation, quality of live and reduce care demand and costs in people with complex care demands, through integration of healthcare and welfare servicesMethods (overview)1. Create best healthcare and welfare practices in Slovenia, Poland, Austria, Norway, UK, Finland, The Netherlands: three integrated best care practices per involved country 2. Get insight in working mechanisms of favourable outcomes (by studying the contexts, mechanisms and outcomes) to enable personalised integrated care for meeting the complex care demand of people focussed on societal participation in all integrated care best practices.3. Disclose program design features and requirements regarding finance, governance, accountability and management for European policymakers, national policy makers, regional policymakers, national umbrella organisations for healthcare and welfare, funding organisations, and managers of healthcare and welfare organisations.4. Identify needs of healthcare and welfare deliverers for creating and supporting dynamic partnerships for integrating these care services for meeting complex care demands in a personalised way for the client.5.
