The effect of Al content on the anti-erosion and anti-oxidation performance of high Al steels at 1373K is studied in this paper. By 168-hour heat treating at 1373 K and at oxidation atmosphere, These results show that for comparing non-Al steel and low-Al (w[Al]=1.14%) steel sample there are a more obvious and easily-dropping oxidation layer in surface in 24 h , the average oxidation rate is up to 0.406 mg/(cm2.h), but for high Al steel, there is a thinner gray oxidation layer in surface and a more fast oxidation rate for w[Al]<5% sample , and there is a thin, close and yellow gloss film and the average oxidation rate is only 0.016 mg/(cm2.h) for w[Al]=8.46% sample. The average erosion rate is 0.096 mg/cm2.h in initial 24 h and thereafter the erosion is very slow. But there is a higher erosion rate and the average erosion rate is 0.594 mg/(cm2.h) in 6 % HCl solution for high Al steel sample and comparing non-Al steel. Accordingly high Al steel possesses a good performance of high temperature anti-oxidation and anti-erosion in NaCl solution.

Based on the perspective of the linear expansion coefficient, an anti-oxidation coating on billet heating for silicon steel was prepared. The anti-oxidation coating can be used at 1400oC and it has good property of automatic pelling off, and the oxidation burning loss was decreased by 80.65%. The microstructure of the coating was observed by scanning electron microscope. The results indicate that the high-temperature anti-oxidation mechanism of the coating on the surface of steel billet is cavity clogged by molten slag, and the service life of anti-oxidation coating is relied on the resistance to permeation and erosion of molten slag.

Al-Si metal anode was fabricated by cold-press sintering with Al and Si as embedded powder in argon atmosphere. The anti-oxidation in the air and anti-corrosion in molten cryolite properties of Al-Si metal anode at high temperature were examined. The experimental results showed that the oxidation kinetics curve obeyed the parabolic law. The corrosion behavior Al-Si metal anode was studied in electrolysis test. The electrolyte consisted of Na3AlF6(90 wt%),CaF2(5 wt%) and Al2O3(5 wt%) which corresponded to molecular ratio of 2.4. The results indicated that the cell voltage was stable and the electric polarized corrosion rate was higher than the static corrosion rate of metal anode. SEM photographs showed an oxidation film formed in the surface of Al-Si metal anode which can obstruct the further corrosion in molten cryolite. It may be concluded that Al-Si metal anode has good combination property and can replace the carbon anode in the aluminum cell.

Alumina coating on carbon fibre were prepared by Sol-gel method, and characterized by thermal gravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. Affected factors such as coating times, oxidation temperature and time were investigated. The results show alumina coatings on carbon fibres are crack-free with a smooth surface, therefore would improve anti-oxidation of carbon fibre significantly. Thickness is one of the most important factors on anti-oxidation of alumina coating, and in this work, thicker coatings have better anti-oxidation quality.

In this paper, the influence of extreme service environment on the mechanical properties of C/C composites was analyzed. The mechanical tests for ordinary C/C samples and C/C samples with anti-oxidation coating were carried out under various high temperature and oxidation conditions. The properties of C/C composites with anti-oxidation coating were focused on. It was pointed out that the material properties were mainly affected by the coupling factors of high temperature, pre-stress, oxidation environment and duration. The influence laws of these factors for the high temperature strength of C/C composites with anti-oxidation coating were further discussed and summarized.

Cashmere fiber produces felting during laundering because of its scale. In this work, anti-felting treatment of cashmere fibers was investigated using the potassium permanganate oxidizing method, and the optimum oxidizing treatment parameter was obtained through orthogonal experiment. The fibers felting, tensile property, scale morphology, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and directional frictional effect of oxidized cashmere fibers were also tested. Experimental results showed that optimum anti-felting condition of cashmere fiber was 3g/L potassium permanganate (KMnO4) for 20min under the condition at temperature 50°C and pH3. The felting assembly volume of oxidized cashmere decreased. XPS test showed that hydroxyl group (-OH) content of oxidized cashmere fiber lowed.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to study a novel Mannich adduct of benztriazole-containing diphenylamine (coded as BD) and its anti-oxidation properties as an additive in two typical synthetic ester-based oils. Design/methodology/approach – The anti-oxidation properties in two typical synthetic ester-based oils were evaluated in detail, using rotating pressure vessel oxidation test. The tribological properties of BD in synthetic ester-based oil (A51) were also tested with Optimal SRV-I oscillating friction and wear tester at atmosphere. Findings – The results of tests demonstrated that the novel BD compound is, indeed, a high-performance anti-oxidation additive that was able to remarkably improve the oxidation stability of synthetic ester-based oils, when it was added at only 0.5 per cent concentration and compared with the base oils containing 0.5 per cent of the commercial available antioxidant additives such as 2, 6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol and octyl-butyl diphenylamine. A plausible mechanism of exceptional synergistic anti-oxidation was proposed. Originality/value – This paper first investigated the anti-oxidation properties and mechanisms of the compound with the structure of BD, which can be very useful and would promote the application of BD antioxidant in the lubricant industry.

A ZrSi2-SiC/SiC gradient coating system was designed to reduce the thermal stress of anti-oxidation coatings for C/C composites and prolong their anti-oxidation time at a high temperature. The SiC transition layer was prepared by pack cementation and the gradient ZrSi2-SiC outer coatings with different ZrSi2 contents added were deposited by supersonic air plasma spraying (SAPS). The micro-morphologies and phase compositions of the coatings were studied by SEM, EDS, XRD, and TG/DSC, and their anti-oxidation performances were tested by a static oxidation experiment. The findings suggested that the gradient coating with 30 wt.% ZrSi2 content displayed the optimum and dense microstructure without obvious pores and microcracks, compared with the other three proportional coatings. During the oxidation test, because of the oxidation reaction of ZrSi2 and SiC phases, a large amount of silica was formed in the coating to fill the pores and microcracks and densify the coating further. Oxidation products ZrO2 and ZrSiO4, having a high melting point and outstanding anti-oxidation property, were embedded in the SiO2 glass layer to reduce the layer volatilization rate and improve the ability to block oxygen. Therefore, the specimen with 30 wt.% ZrSi2 still kept mass gain after 188 h oxidation time at 1500 °C. However, when the oxidation time was increased to 198 h, it had a mass loss of 0.1%, because the coating compactness was destroyed by the escape of the oxidation gases.

Pathways for oxidation of the parent nitrosoamine 2, nitrosodimethylamine 3, and anti- nitrosoethylmethylamine 4 by the parent dioxirane 1 have been explored computationally using the B3LYP hybrid density functional theoretical method in conjunction with the 6-31G* and 6-311+G** basis sets. Oxygen transfer from 1 to the nitrogen of the NO group (NO oxidation), yielding nitroamines 5,7, and 10, has the lowest activation barrier (15, 12.8, and 12 kcal mol-1 for 2, 3, and anti-4, respectively). Oxidation of the amine nitrogen (N oxidation) in 2, 3 leads to nitric oxide and nitroxyl radicals 6, 8 and is characterized by the highest activation energy: 28.5 kcal mol-1 for 2, 22.3 kcal mol-1 for 3. The potential barrier to hydroxylation of the methyl groups in 3 (CH oxidation) is intermediate - ca. 19 kcal mol-1. Introduction of a methyl group to the carbon reaction centre decreases the activation barrier of the anti-CH oxidation by 2-3 kcal mol-1. In 3, a gas-phase small preference for anti-CH oxidation over syn-CH oxidation, 0.1 kcal mol-1, is predicted to increase dramatically to 4.7 kcal mol-1 when the reaction is carried out in a dielectric medium (acetone, IPCM model). In general, polar solvents (CH2Cl2, acetone) lower the activation barriers for the NO, N, and CH oxidations, more so for the species of higher polarity than those of lower polarity (reactive complexes (1+3), (1+anti-4), transition state anti,syn-TSCH(1+4)]. However, the chemoselectivity (EaNO <Eaanti-CH <Easyn-CH <EaN) in the polar solvents is predicted to be the same as in the gas phase.Key words: dioxirane, nitrosoamines, oxidation, ab initio, omputation.

The isothermal oxidation behaviour under static atmosphere of a new directionally solidified Ni-base superalloy was investigated. The results showed that the oxidation kinetics curves of the alloy follow parabolic law in the temperature range of 750-950°C. The diffusion activation energy Q is to be about 244.86 kJ•mol-1 and the oxidation within this temperature range is mainly controlled by Cr3+ diffusion among Cr2O3 oxidation film. The oxidation resistance grade of the alloy is perfect anti-oxidation within 750-850°C, and anti-oxidation within 900-950°C. The oxidation film can be divided into TiO2, Cr2O3+TiTaO4+NiCr2O4, Al2O3 and TiN layers, from the surface to inside. Priority oxidation and the inside oxidation of Al are considered with the oxidation of Ti and the depletion of Cr, and it is the key point for the improving of oxidation resistance.

Tamarindus indica L. or tamarind seed is an industrial by-product of interest to be investigated for its potential and value-added application. An ethanolic tamarind seed coat (TS) extract was prepared using the maceration technique and used to determine the phytochemical composition and bioactivities. The total phenolic and flavonoid contents were determined using colorimetric methods; moreover, chemical constituents were identified and quantified compared to the standard compounds using the HPLC-UV DAD technique. Bioactivities were investigated using various models: antioxidative activity in a DPPH assay model, anti-melanogenesis in B16 melanoma cells, anti-adipogenesis in 3T3-L1 adipocytes, and anti-microbial activity against S. aureus, P. aeruginosa, E. coli, and C. albican using agar disc diffusion and microdilution methods. The results manifested a high content of catechin as a chemical constituent and multiple beneficiary bioactivities of TS extract, including superior antioxidation to ascorbic acid and catechin, comparable anti-melanogenesis to deoxyarbutin, and significant anti-adipogenesis through inhibition of pre-adipocyte differentiation and reduction of lipid and triglyceride accumulation, and a broad spectral anti-microbial activity with a selectively high susceptibility to S. aureus when compared to 1% Parabens. Conclusively, TS extract has been revealed as a potential bioactive agent as well as an alternative preservative for application in food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical product development.

The Ce4+-modified titania nanofilm was deposited onto mild steels by the sol-gel method. The effect of the film on protecting mild steels from oxidation was studied by means of oxidation test, SEM and XRD. It was found that the anti-oxidation effect is increased by Ce4+ modifying and with increasing layer number. When oxidized below 600 oC, the Ce4+-modified double-layer titania nanofilm possesses an excellent anti-oxidation performance that is comparable with that of the stainless steel.

New atherosclerosis causative factors and preventive modalities have been identified. Atherogenic factors include lipid oxidation products, such as cholesterol oxidation products, malonaldehyde and other aldehydes; trans-fatty acids; some saturated fatty acids (lauric, myristic and possibly palmitic acids); and myristic acid plus cholesterol. Lipid oxidation products are well suited to induce arterial damage, based on their known cytotoxic effects; evidence also indicates the possibility of plaque promotion and stimulation of thrombogenesis. Anti-atherogenic factors include antioxidants, fish oils and other polyunsaturates (if protected from oxidation), fibre and trace minerals such as copper, manganese, selenium and zinc. Iron is unique, being considered as both a potential promoter of atherosclerosis (component of ferritin, conceivably inducing lipid oxidation) and a possible anti-atherogenic component (of antioxidant enzyme catalase). It is apparent that an entire new series of research challenges has been uncovered.

In order to improve Anti-oxidation, using CVD method, a SiC coating is prepared on the surface of C/C composites. We have studied the microstructure of the SiC coating, oxidation resistance and high temperature mechanical properties. The results show that SiC coating has excellent oxidation resistance. When coated sample is oxidized at 1500 °C after 50 hours, its oxidation weight loss rate is only 1.45%, and coated samples can still maintain high mechanical properties at 1200 °C.

In this work, on the basis of carbon materials microstructure and morphology, we study on the influence of carbon fiber content , graphite degree and metal impurities on oxidation performance of carbon materials. The result of oxidation test shows that there are more crystal defects at the interface of carbon fiber and carbon matrix, and oxidation activity of carbon atoms near the area of crystal defects is higher than others.Carbon materials with higher fiber content and higher graphite degree, has a better anti-oxidation performance. The presence of impurities, especially metal impurities play a catalysis role in oxidation of carbon materials. After purification, impurities escape from the graphite microcrystal, resulting that the distortion of lattice decreased, that cause the better anti-oxidation performance.

The results have shown that the modification enhances anti-oxidation and extreme-pressure performance of the detergents without affecting their dispersing ability and anti-wear behavior obviously.

Streptococcus thermophilus YIT 2001 (ST-1), a lactic acid bacterial strain, was shown to have inhibitory effects on the oxidation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and the development of aortic fatty lesions in an animal model, and lower the serum levels of malondialdehyde-modified LDL, an oxidative modification product of LDL, in a clinical trial. This study aimed to identify the intracellular active component of ST-1 associated with anti-oxidative activity against LDL oxidation. High-performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionisation mass spectrometry analysis after fractionation of the cellular extract by reversed-phase chromatography demonstrated that the active fraction contained reduced glutathione (GSH). GSH showed anti-oxidative activity in a dose-dependent manner, while this activity disappeared following thiol derivatisation. ST-1 had the strongest anti-oxidative activity against LDL oxidation and the highest level of intracellular GSH among five strains of S. thermophilus. In addition, the anti-oxidative activity of ST-1 after thiol derivatisation decreased by about half, which was similar to that of three other strains containing poor or no intracellular GSH or thiol components. Moreover, anti-oxidative activity against LDL oxidation was observed in hyperlipidaemic hamsters fed with high GSH ST-1 cells but not in those given low GSH cells. These findings suggest that intracellular GSH in ST-1 may provide beneficial effects via anti-oxidative activity against LDL oxidation and excess oxidative stress in the blood.

Abstractα‐mangostin which has been extracted from mangosteen peel is known as an excellent bioactive substance with high anti‐oxidation, anti‐bacterial, anti‐inflammatory, etc. The application of α‐mangostin in the biomedicine field is potential and promising. However, the α‐mangostin has a poorly solubility in aqueous. Using polymers as carriers to improve the solubility of α‐mangostin has been attracted in research. In this work, poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) crosslinked with citric acid has been used as a carrier to enhance the solubility of α‐mangostin. The PVA/α‐mangostin nanofibers were prepared by electrospinning method with the ratio of PVA/α‐mangostin varied 100/0, 100/1 and 100/3 (w/w). The obtained PVA/α‐mangostin nanofibers have smooth and homogenous surface. The introduction of α‐mangostin into PVA can increase mechanical properties of PVA. The slight shift in wavenumbers characterized for stretching vibration of hydroxyl groups in the PVA/α‐mangostin nanofibers as compared to PVA nanofibers suggested that hydroxyl groups in PVA can interact with hydroxyl groups in α‐mangostin. The solubility of α‐mangostin in ethanol/pH buffer solutions was enhanced significantly in the presence of PVA. The antibacterial and anti‐oxidation ability of PVA/α‐mangostin nanofibers was increased as increasing α‐mangostin concentration. These results showed that the nanofibers are potential for application in biomedicine field as a wound dressing material or in food industry.

The anti-oxidation stability of rapeseed biodiesel (RME) was evaluated on an oxidation simulator set up by the author. The results showed that oxidative stability of RME was worse than that of petrodiesel by exhibiting higher acid values and peroxide values, as well as greater viscosity increases after oxidation. Furthermore, a conjecture was taken about the configurational changes and the oxidation mechanisms of unsaturated fatty acid methyl ester molecules in the oxidation process, according to the principles of free radical reactions and the results of both infrared and ultraviolet spectroscopic analysis. An idea was put forward that, during oxidation, cis-trans isomerization might occur in unsaturated fatty acid methyl ester molecules and conjugated double-bond might produce due to transfer of double-bond.

In order to prepare edible cling film with anti-oxidation and anti-bacteria properties, in this study, a new functional food packaging film was prepared using carrageenan (CA) and garlic extract (GE) as raw materials, then based on identification of morphological and structural characteristics, anti-oxidation analysis and anti-bacteria analysis methods were used to study the optical properties and physical and chemical characteristics of the film materials. Results indicate that the addition of garlic extract has affected the micro-structure and mechanical properties of composite film, where the DPPH free radical scavenging rate significantly increases with the increase of extract concentration. In addition, the film with the mass concentration of 3% has a better anti-oxidation effect and the diameter of inhibition zone increases with the increase of extract concentration. In short, the addition of garlic extract improves the biological activity of carrageenan film, having provided a theoretical basis for the production of garlic extract-carrageenan composite film.

In this paper, resin and vapor deposition (CVD) pyrolytic carbon coating on carbon materials was designed based on the oxidation erosion and silicification corrosion mechanism. Meanwhile the phase structure, microstructure, anti-oxidation and anti-silicification corrosion mechanisms of both coatings were studied. The surface of resin pyrolytic carbon coating has a lot of defec comparing with CVD pyrolytic carbon coating. After static oxidation test at 900 °C, the resin pyrolytic carbon coating haves some antioxidant protection ability, but after 4 h of static oxidation, weight loss rate is still as high as 30%. Antioxidant effect of CVD pyrolytic carbon coating is good, 4 h oxidation weightlessness rate is about 10%. After silicification corrosion at 1600 °C, CVD pyrolytic carbon has excellent silicification protection ability.

The succulent plant Aeonium sedifolium leaves contain several compounds that are of interest for their cosmetic uses on the skin. This study measured the inhibitory effects of enzyme production and antioxidant, astringent effects and skin wrinkles using Aeonium sedifolium leaves (ASL). The total phenolics compounds (TPC) content of ASL under optimal extraction conditions was 34.49 mg/g for hot water extract (ASLW) and 61.64 mg/g for 50% ethanol extract (ASLE). The ASLW and ASLE extracts were freeze-dried, powdered, and used as solids. TPC content, 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazy (DPPH) radical scavenging activity, and 2,2’-azinobis (3-ethylben-zothiazoline 6-sulfonate) (ABTS) radical inhibition of the ASL phenolics were tested. The DPPH radical scavenging activities of ASLW and ASLE were tested at a TPC of 100 μg/mL. ABTS radical inhibition showed antioxidant activity of 100.00% in ASLW and ASLE, and the antioxidant protection factor of ASLW and ASLE was 1.07 and 1.22, respectively. The thiobarbituric acid-reactive substance (TBARS) inhibitory activity of ASLW and ASLE was 77.00%. The elastase inhibitory activity of ASLE was 69.03%, and collagenase inhibition activity for ASLW and ASLE was 29.82% and 54.76%, respectively. The astringent effect of ASLE was 89.82% at a TPC of 200 μg/mL. Thus, we concluded that ASL has the potential as a functional cosmetic ingredient with anti-aging effects on the skin.
