Texto completo da fonteThis dissertation investigates contact-induced semantic shifts in Quebec English, i.e., preexisting English words which are used with a different meaning due to the potential influence of French. I propose a novel approach at the intersection of natural language processing and variationist sociolinguistics, aiming to provide a more comprehensive descriptive account as well as assess the contributions of the implemented methods.In order to conduct computational analyses of semantic variation, I created a corpus containing 78.8 million tweets from Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver. It was used to implement different types of vector space models, i.e., computational representations of word meaning. Type-level models were used to identify new semantic shifts based on the semantic differences between Montreal and the other two cities. Token-level models were used in finer-grained analyses and allowed to further characterize their use. Despite promising results, systematic quantitative evaluation and extensive qualitative analyses suggest that these methods are hampered by noise related to their inherent characteristics as well as corpus structure.These large-scale approaches were complemented with finer-grained data collected through sociolinguistic interviews with 15 speakers living in Montreal. Varying correlations between lexical items and a range of sociodemographic factors, coupled with qualitative remarks on their use, point to four distinct patterns of synchronic variation; these in turn reflect potential diachronic processes. Interspeaker variability suggests that the use of semantic shifts is driven by speakers who tend to be younger and proficient in both English and French. The acceptability ratings are weakly correlated with computational variation measures, suggesting that they capture different dimensions of semantic variation.Overall, this dissertation has provided the first systematic description of contact-induced semantic shifts in Quebec English, and highlighted the complementarity of approaches used in different disciplines. These considerations have provided a pathway towards a better-informed use of corpus-based computational methods in studies of sociolinguistic phenomena

Texto completo da fonteThis study addresses the impact of a definition paradigm shift on the use of anglicisms in the French-speaking written press. Built around a diachronic analysis (2000-2015) of the numerous differences linked to a change of definition, it also ventures into the impact such a change may have on comparative analysis focusing on geographical origin (France vs Quebec) or the nature of the newspaper (“of record” vs “popular”). It aims at contributing to the literature though two different aspects:(1) This study is the only conceptual work to highlight what sort of impact a change in the definition of “English borrowing” can have on the frequency of anglicism usage. It shows through an opposition with/without French equivalents, that an analysis focused only on anglicisms for which French provides an equivalent – those Forest and Boudreau (1998) consider “unnecessary” or “erroneous” (Villers, 2009) – reveals an important drop in the usage frequency compared to an analysis based on all anglicisms. It also unveils that, out of three anglicisms extracted from my corpus, two have no equivalents in French and are de facto unavoidable.(2) This research is, to my knowledge, one of the first in comparative study to show, with empirical evidence, how definition affects not only usage frequency, but also dictates the way newspapers develop over time depending on different criterion. Based on two different angles of comparison (geographical origin and nature of the journal), I also show that a change in the definition leads to different evolution trajectories, different relationships between our newspapers and different diachronic variations. To answer my research questions, I built one of the largest corpora ever used for a study on anglicisms. With more than 330 million words, it gathers all the articles published by four different newspapers for the years 2000, 2005, 2010 and 2015: Le Monde and Le Parisien for France, and Le Devoir and La Presse for Quebec. I also used two lists of keywords composed of 5416 and 2934 anglicisms taken from two general dictionaries (Le Petit Robert 2016 and Le Multidictionnaire de la langue française–4th edition 2013) and two specialized dictionaries (Höfler’s Dictionnaire des anglicismes–1982 and Le Colpron, dictionnaire des anglicismes–4th edition). By going far beyond what previous studies have done, it offers a more advanced overview than usual.First, my results show that the usage frequency is generally low (0.72% for all anglicisms; 0.28% for anglicisms with equivalents only; 0.44% for anglicisms without equivalents only) both in France and Quebec, which is consistent with the findings of previous studies. However, I find clear differences in terms of results for each analysis, as the frequency rate for anglicisms with equivalents is 1.5 times lower than the frequency rate for anglicisms without equivalent. This proves that the definition of the very concept of “anglicism” directly influences the frequency of usage. Second, I observe that this change of definition also affects comparative analysis focused on specific criteria such as the geographical origin or the nature of the newspapers. My study thus reveals great nuances in terms of trend over 15 years according to which definition is used: for instance, results for Quebec newspapers are slowly decreasing over time when anglicisms with equivalents are concerned, – especially for Le Devoir, whereas they increase when anglicisms do not have an equivalent. When it comes to the nature of the newspaper, Le Parisien, which is the newspaper that uses the most anglicisms of the four, forms a much more heterogeneous duo with La Presse when only anglicisms with equivalents are taken into account. They also give prominence to Le Devoir and Le Monde whose evolution trends are close to identical when the broader definition of Anglicism is used but a bit more asymmetric when equivalents come into play

Omnipresent in Quebec, issues about language are to be found in many themes, in religion, politics, education, publishing, the press, cinema, theatre, songs, radio and television ; they are essential to the nation’s cultural identity. Our subject deals with the French-speaking populations in France and Canada. 80 % of French Canadians are found in the province of Quebec. The linguistic problems are prominent and generally trigger a mutual sensitivity between Quebec and France. Our search begins at the end of nineteenth century and finishes in 1977, and is concerned with speech, thinking and opinions on French language, along with its evolution, transmission and representation at the heart of the relations between Quebec and France and French-speaking communities. The particular and unique history between these regions makes them the driving force behind the promotion and the spreading of French in the French-speaking communities and in the world

Texto completo da fonteThis dissertation studies the role played by the Myth of English as the global language in framing the debate on the intensive teaching of English in Quebec; a notion closely related to Quebec's language issue. Framing theories suggest that different actors (political, media and citizens) "frame" events by favoring certain definitions of social issues, which later influence how individuals perceive these issues. However, to be effective and mobilizing, frames must “strike a chord”. They must resonate culturally with shared historical narratives or myths (Snow and Benford, 1988). In this sense, due to its hegemony around the world, some researchers describe the discourse that constructs English as the universal language as a "myth". They also suggest that this myth plays a strategic role in framing linguistic issues around the world. In the unique sociolinguistic context of Quebec, where the French and English languages have coexisted and competed for a long time, we may wonder how this myth influences the framing of linguistic issues. In some debates surrounding the teaching of English in Quebec, we do observe a tension between two ways of framing English: some describe it as a “key to opening up to the world”, a promise of individual success and social mobility; on the other hand, others see it as the "language of Lord Durham", a dominating language whose expansion, particularly in the Quebec context, threatens the French language and the feeling of collective identity. The dissertation focuses on the framing of the public debate surrounding the announcement of a mandatory intensive English program policy, between February 2011 and 2015 in Quebec. It raises the question of the role played by the Myth of English as the global language in this debate. Using a three-phase mixed methods research design, the dissertation begins with a historical survey tracing the genesis of the frames and myths emerging from different public debates on the teaching of English. In a second step, a qualitative analysis allows us to list the different frames and describe framing and reasoning devices that compose them. Finally, a quantitative automated content analysis of documents from sources involved in the debate helps validate and measure the frames’ presence in this public debate. The results underline the central and polarizing nature of the issue of the teaching of English as a second language in Quebec history and show that it represent a terrain for a long-lasting ideological struggle. We observe a weak dominance of the globalizing master frame and we also note that this instrumental and universalizing perspective is not specific to recent debates, but that it is rather expressed throughout Quebec's history. The study also shows the strength and resilience of the nationalizing master frame, particularly among citizens involved in the debate, even though we observe signs of a decline of the myth of English as Lord Durham’s language. Finally, it shows that, in the Quebec debate on the teaching of English, the myth of English as the global language, provides a cultural resonance effect to the frames which mobilizes it. It allows actors to anchor their arguments in a widely shared historical narrative and conveys a certain communication ethos. It thus provides a moral evaluation grid of the issue which makes it possible to legitimize the dominant position of English in the world and, by the same token, to justify the adoption of policies favoring its teaching. The thesis responds to the need, raised by some researchers, for studies that take into account the cultural, socio-political and ideological dimensions of the framing process (Oliver and Johnston, 2000). It also contributes to a better understanding of the role of myths in this process and highlights the power dynamics that contribute to the emergence, the rise in power, and then the dominance of certain frames. In addition, the thesis helps to shed light on the understanding of how discourse on English as the global language is constructed and articulated locally. By uniquely combining certain concepts and methods from various research traditions, the favored mixed methodological approach offers a multidimensional look to the complex phenomenon of framing and helps to better understand its process.

Nous nous intéressons en particulier à la relation entre la perception qu'ont les locuteurs québécois de sens influencés de l'anglais et les conditions d'utilisation et d'intégration de ces sens à la signification lexicale en français. Cette question est abordée à travers l'étude de 19 unités lexicales traditionnellement considérées comme des emprunts sémantiques à l'anglais. Suivant une double analyse menée sur un corpus lexicographique composé de 61 ouvrages et sur un corpus de productions authentiques appartenant à différents types de discours d'un volume total de 427,5 millions d'occurrences-mots, il apparaît que le facteur principal permettant à un sens « étranger » d'être utilisé en français n'est pas lié exclusivement à la ressemblance formelle entre les unités lexicales en français et en anglais, mais est plutôt d'ordre sémantique. Le degré d'intégration de ce sens « étranger » à la signification lexicale dépend de la perception, par les locuteurs, d'une communauté de sens entre celui-ci et les autres acceptions de l'unité lexicale.

Cette étude établit le statut d’infixe de l’emprunt fuckin’ en français québécois parlé à Montréal. L’infixation de fuckin’ est un phénomène bien connu en anglais, mais qui n’a fait l’objet d’aucune étude approfondie en français du Québec jusqu’à maintenant. Une analyse de 1200 tweets du français parlé à Montréal et de près de 1000 tweets de l’anglais a permis de décrire et de quantifier les usages de fuckin’ pour la zone géographique à l’étude. Cette analyse révèle que la grammaticalisation de fuckin’ est en cours en français parlé à Montréal et que les usages morphologiques de fuckin’ ont bel et bien intégré cette variété de français. Pour mieux explorer le phénomène en question en synchronie, cette contribution compare les usages de fuckin’ en français avec ses usages en anglais. La comparaison des deux corpus de tweets indique que l’infixation n’est pas plus ancrée dans l’usage en anglais qu’en français et que le statut de l’infixation est similaire dans les deux langues, du moins à Montréal. Il semble cependant que le processus d’infixation diffère, entre autres en raison de la structure accentuelle différente de l’anglais et du français.

In this context, this study seeks to classify lexical neologisms in Quebec French taken from a corpus of words which was recently analyzed and shows that Quebec lexical neologisms have varied sources of enrichment and their difference in productivity dependent on their type, formation process, origin, etc. In order to measure the effectiveness of lexical neologisms in Quebec French, this paper is also interested in its actualization that is its recognition and frequency of use in the language monitored in a linguistic survey conducted in Quebec.This work provides news perspectives and ideas for a comparative study on the aforementioned aspects of lexical neologisms in Quebec French and the French language of France

The Changing Dynamics of the Indexing Theory: A Content Analysis ofThe Globe and Mailand The Toronto Star, ” is dealing with the theory of indexing in a Canadian context. Therefore, the main problem illustrated by Bennett and Pfetsch (2018) is that indexing theory removes “alternative voices, ” instead of including these “new” voices in order to balance the sources. In this new fractured environment, it is more complex than before to balance different perspectives and opinions because of the involvement of different actors in the political arena. The main argument of this thesis is that it is imperative totest the theory of indexation and to adapt its central elements to the new political environment. This means an inclusion of this new environment to the basic assumptions that will include alternative narratives. It is in this context that we decided to analyze the issue of immigration policies in Canada and its indexing by the media. Consequently, this thesis is devoted to an analysis of the relationship between the media and official political authorities in Canada, in particular, by addressing the question of the place of alternative narratives in Canadian journalistic discourse.

Texto completo da fonteDrawing on a sociolinguistic perspective, this study examined the code-switching practices of five elementary core ESL teachers (3rd cycle) in French-medium schools in the Québec City area. The study, which involved case studies, focused on five research questions: (1) the amount of French, the L1, used by the ESL teachers, (2) the reasons why the teachers used the L1 in their classes, (3) the teachers’ views concerning the factors that influenced their L1 use, (4) the influence of the teachers’ language choice on students’ language choice, (5) the students’ perceptions of their teachers and their own L1/L2 use. Data were collected over two different periods of observation in the teachers’ classrooms during the 2007-2008 academic year. Four main sources of data were obtained: videotaped recordings of the lessons observed, stimulated recalls, an end-of study interview with each teacher, and a student questionnaire. Amongst the findings, the following are of particular note. First, in contrast to past studies, the present study opted for an emic perspective in which teachers themselves were asked to identify the reasons for which they used the target language based on video clips of their lessons. This fine-grained analysis brought to light a more nuanced analysis notably with respect to certain reasons (e.g., saving time, fatigue) which, even if previously evoked in interviews, could elude inclusion in research etic-based analyses of lessons. Amongst other things, the present study brought to light one reason not previously mentioned in other studies, i.e., the use of time-outs which performed a symbolic boundary maintaining function to preserve the “Englishness” of the ESL classroom. Secondly, the present study extends research which has infrequently reported on individual variation amongst teachers with respect to L1 use within their own lessons. In contrast to past studies, where individual variation within teachers’ lessons has typically been confined to time (Duff & Polio, 1990; Edstrom, 2006; Nagy, 2009a), the present study contributes to those few studies (De la Campa & Nassaji, 2009; Rolin-Ianziti & Brownlie, 2002) which also pinpoint differences in the reasons for such variation amongst case study participants. Thirdly, as in Carless’ (2004) study, one teacher in the present study, Kora, stood out from the others in terms of having a consistently low rate of L1 use (less than 1%), thus thus underscoring his contention that the teacher’s experiences, beliefs and competencies may be a more significant factor in terms of target language use than the students’ level of language proficiency. The case of Kora lends credence to those teachers and researchers who have argued from a pedagogical perspective (Carless, 2004b; Chambers, 1991; Nagy, 2009a; Turnbull, 2006) for the need to enhance teachers’ awareness of the strategies which can be used to increase target language use in the second language classroom. Fourthly, with respect to the impact of the teacher's choice of language on that of the students', the present study extends Liu et al.’s (2004) findings through the analysis of a very different school cultural context involving ESL teaching in the French-medium school system within the province of Quebec. Fifthly, as revealed by the student questionnaire results, despite relatively high levels of English use in their classes, the Cycle 3 elementary grade students did not feel unduly stressed. In contrast to previous studies (Levine, 2003; Macaro & Lee, 2013; Rolin-Ianziti & Varshney, 2009) which have focused on students’ perceptions of teachers’ L1 and L2 use, the present study also examined the latter’s perception of strategy use within their classes. Results reveal that students perceived their teachers as using strategies to a certain degree, particularly in regard to the use of visuals. However, what emerged more strongly was students’ perception of themselves as using strategies to communicate in the target language. Finally, from a methodological point of view, this study appears to be the first to have analyzed percentages for the use of English and French using digital editing features. In past studies, researchers have typically resorted to word counts or timing with a stopwatch, procedures which can be more onerous and time-consuming. Implications for code-switching practices in the classroom as well as suggestions for future research are also discussed.

The writing of Moacyr Scliar mainly focuses on the issue of Jewish immigration to Brazil and on the adaptation and integration into the Brazilian society. He constructs with humor and lightness characters that are often living internal conflicts, trying to constitute themselves an identity composed of traces of memories and the new reality which surrounds them. It is the case of the characters of his works that integrate my corpus, namely, the Centaur in the garden and His majesty of the Indians. The writings of the Quebec-French Régine Robin include several areas of knowledge and follow a trend or a movement of writers in Quebec who favor in their writings an idea of national construction that does not have the country as the center, but rather an identity approach which strengthens and signals the wide cultural and ethnic diversity that makes up Quebec. This is what they call the migrant writing. Our interest mainly focuses on his literary production, namely the novel La Québécoite and his storybook The immense fatigue of Stones. However, her production as a theorist provides complementary elements for the analysis of his literary works, such as The Memory Novel, Kafka, and The Saturated Memory. Régine Robin and Moacyr Scliar have in common the fact of creating in their books an intermediate space between facts and fiction, and also to present expressions of the American community of Jewish origin. In this way, are intertwined in their works a national dimension, a regional dimension and a transnational community dimension

Texto completo da fonteThis thesis deals with the problem of lexical borrowing from English into French. More precisely, we analyse the way English loanwords function in Quebec French (QF), after having assumed that a better understanding of this functionning can provide an explanation as to the vitality of these anglicisms in QF, as well as help to grasp the relation between these anglicisms and Quebec identity, and shed some more light on the causes of the loanword phenomenon. Our corpus has been extracted from the Croc humor magazine, rich in English loanwords and revealing, as it appeared to us, in terms of Quebec identity. Thirty issues of this magazine were looked through in order to establish our database of lexical anglicisms. The fifteen most frequent words of this list (bingo, cheap, chum, coke, fun, gang, hamburger, hot dog, job, joke, party, pinotte, pot smatte, waiter/waitress) were then analyzed according to two aspects. First, to describe denotations, we partly applied models supplied by the Explanatory and Combinatorial Lexicology Framework developped by Mel’čuk, Clas and Polguère (1995). Then, to identify the connotations of anglicisms in the texts of Croc, we used an adaptation of the classification of connotative facts established by Kerbrat-Orecchioni in The Connotation (1977). Our analysis of lexical anglicisms in QF led to two main conclusions. First, the study of denotations has revealed their polysemy, i.e. “ semantic productivity ”, which proves their vitality in the linguistic, limited, sense of the word. The study of connotations seems to help to explain their vitality in the broad sense of the word, i.e. “ dynamism, energy, spontaneity ”. The “ slippery ” essence of connotations – diverse, playful, related to a given space and time and to a certain “ worldview ” – has indeed confirmed their vital texture and revealed their close relation to a specific (namely Quebec) identity. Our thesis tries to show that codification of connotations, however difficult, is possible to some extent.

Texto completo da fonteThe study explored ESL tutoring sessions in the context of the Elluminate platform, a synchronous language management system (SLMS). The participants were ESL pre-service teachers from Québec who provided tutoring to small groups of secondary 1 ESL students located in Mexico. The study focused on three research questions: (1) the types of scaffolding provided by the tutors, (2) the tutors’ perceptions of teaching within this environment, and (3) the learners` perception of their learning experience. Data collection included screen capture of the online sessions and surveys. In addition to the four types of scaffolding previously identified by Pawan (2008) – linguistic, conceptual, social and cultural, a fifth type, particular to the SLMS environment – technical scaffolding, also emerged. Both tutors and ESL students were generally positive about their online experiences.

Texto completo da fonteThe state of the current political climate, which is prioritizing safe migration policies that benefit both the host country and the newcomer, is a topic of both debate and discussion. Despite having distinct policies towards immigration, Canada and France share similar problems relating to language learning, integration, positioning, and identity. In this qualitative action research study, we compare the points of view of important actors involved in this discourse, teachers and administrators, and newcomers themselves. Combining the results of an online survey with one-on-one open questioned interviews designed for both participant groups, we have observed the following: The programs developed for newcomers have limited foundations and influence relating to the successful integration. Regardless of language level, a key component to belonging, integration, confidence in the target language, and having a voice is reciprocity. Having a native speaker social network that accepts the newcomer and is “willing to catch them” appears to be paramount

Texto completo da fonteIn this work we set three critical periods in the life of the mother-daughter : childhood of the daughter in Le Bruit des choses vivantes, teen girl in L’île de la Merci and La chute du corps, adulthood of the woman and the old age of the mother in L’ingratitude and Adieu Agnès. Overall, this study is an analysis of the entire cycle of life of a mother and a daughter, from the child's birth until the old age of the mother. Proceeding in chronological order, we will discuss some key issues for the mother-daughter relationship in different periods, such as tension between symbiosis and separation, between choking and independence, between distance and attachment, and different attitudes about sexuality, the condemnation of death and the affirmation of life. Finally through analysis of various relationships between mothers and daughters, we see that, in life, the motherdaughter relationship undergoes great changes that is often full of conflict, misunderstandings, or worse tragedies. However, we can see that there are still possible solutions to fix them. Faced with their complex relationship, which is essential for both the mother and the daughter is to find ways to be informed, to negotiate and to understand each other throughout life

Texto completo da fonteThis study intends to analyze the representation of the social identities in the francophone Canadian novel, taking as example the novels of the Quebecois writer Jacques Poulin. It is well known today that Poulin is a representative of the postmodern Quebecois novel. Our personal hypothesis is to demonstrate that Jacques Poulin is a postmodern representative, not only for the writing techniques specific to this phenomenon he uses, but also because he makes an inventory of the Quebecois society in his novels. Analyzing the twelve novels he has written so far, we could identify details relating back to the evolution of the Quebecois society since the end of the Quiet Revolution until nowadays. Beyond the stories of his characters there is a real social background where the reader can recognize social realities, some of them being specific to Québec, other being universal. These social aspects are closely linked to the personal and social development of the poulinien character and an analysis of the works belonging to the Quebecois novelist not taking into account all these aspects would not be complete. We wish though to underline the fact that Poulin treats all these socials topics drawing inspiration from his own personal experiences. When sociology is concerned, Poulin is more skeptical about the theory, and less about the practical experience

Texto completo da fonteThis thesis examines the contribution of collective petitions to the development of Quebec's public sphere in the second half of the eighteenth century. It examines these using the concepts of public, public sphere, public opinion, and spaces of sociability. The study is based on a detailed analysis of some 278 collective petitions from the establishment of civil government in 1764 until the creation of the parliamentary system in 1791. In the absence of traditional representative institutions, collective petitioning to colonial authorities became an essential tool for influencing political and administrative decisions. A long-standing practice in England but rare in New France, collective petitioning allowed for the participation of a broad swathe of the colony's population in the colonial public sphere: old and new subjects, men and women, elites and ordinary people.

Texto completo da fonteThe immigration policy and cultural policies of Quebec promote the emergence of a significant number of Haitian people in Montreal. Therefore, these people can evolve in a social environment that is different from the one they used to have in their country of origin. We have conducted a research in the Saint-Michel district of Montreal with of a group of young people of different origins, but mostly of Haitian origin. Through this research we have concluded that Haitian origin, while sometimes being endowed with a painful memory of alterity, have developed a social bond with other young people, whethernative or immigrants from different other origins. Although the most predominant language used or spoken by these young Haitian immigrants is Quebec French, the Haitian Creole has established itself as the emblem of this link developed between the different young people of the district. We have also noticed that these young people of Haitian origin have demonstrated social innovation and developed identity strategies in order to assert themselves as social actors in this Quebec society. In addition, the sociolinguistic dynamics in Saint-Michel has favoured the vitality of the Haitian Creole, which, thus, takesan unusual route

Texto completo da fonteThis thesis traces and investigates the transition in Quebec drama over the last forty years from writing driven by collective identity to writing driven by the individual. The reading of the dramatic texts draws on a socio-critical approach, identifying discursive strategies and the poetics of self-representation in a theatrical tradition seen to be borrowing its devices from intimate literature. Consequently, biographically inflected plays and epic plays reinterpreting history are studied alongside the more explicitly autobiographical, autofictional, and self-reflective works that have come to typify recent Quebec theatre production. After having been resolutely political and language-based, Quebec drama—long considered reflective of the national aspirations of a people in a state of ongoing redefinition—is now interested primarily in itself as a literary trope. Theatre practitioners have become preoccupied with the narrowing space they occupy in Quebec society. Has the social process of becoming [“le devenir” in the Deleuzian sense] been replaced by an overwhelming preoccupation with the individual sense of becoming, not as a stated exemplum, but rather as the manifestation of a sense of uniqueness? The thesis examines the emergence of a self-reflective dramaturgy celebrating the autobiographical practices its artists are engaged in. Thus theatrical discourse is again in step with social discourse in Quebec, except that the dramatic mirror is reflecting a society of individuals preoccupied with their own personal sense of accomplishment

The chosen approach is to perform a cross analysis on four French-speaking contexts. This comparative research allows us to shift the focus on language and immigration away from the national level. We offer to place the linguistic, cultural and educational dimensions linked with the integration of migrants in a European and international perspective. This study has two objectives: perform a typology and an evaluation of these policies. We aim at describing and analysing the choices and actions led by the state to develop knowledge and learning for adult migrants. Our research identifies the turning point from which proficiency of language became a political issue, deeply intertwined with immigration policies. On one side, the thesis emphasizes the linguistic ideologies that shape the collective imaginations, and their influence on political arguments and language planning. On the other side, it highlights the flow of assumed ideologies and state practices related to language and immigration. Finally, the research takes into account the impact of language planning on knowledge production and training in language didactics

Texto completo da fonteAmerican myths generate recurring symbols and stereotypes in the collective imagination. In Quebec literature, the use of these myths ignores ideology, favouring the founding act of a new mythology. Quebec myths firstly distinguished themselves from American myths, carrying with them a critical perspective on the globalising process driven by the American territory. In developing their national literature, Quebec authors from the Quiet Revolution shaped new interpretations of American myths. Americanness offers changing anthropological perspectives for the adaptation of myths into film and literature. The myth as Roland Barthes defines it, enables a contemporary interpretation of each Quebec myth you can find in this study. Thus, the corpus in my dissertation is made up of Quebec and American works, movies directed by Denys Arcand and Clint Eastwood and novels or argumentative essays by the quiet author who is the subject of this dissertation, Jacques Godbout as well as Jacques Poulin, Philippe Aubert de Gaspé, Antonine Maillet, Anne Hébert and Jack Kerouac
