The origins and content of the methodology of scientific research programs of I. Lakatos are considered taking into account the problems and tasks of the history of sociology. The reception of the methodology of research programs in sociology can be explained by the relevance of the analytical model of the structure and dynamics of the research program in the analysis of sociological knowledge. Within the framework of sociological knowledge, metatheoretical, theoretical and empirical structural levels are analytically distinguished. Certain structural analogies are observed: between the “hard core” and “negative heuristics” of the research program, on the one hand, and metatheory, on the other; between the “protective belt” and the “positive heuristic” of the research program, on the one hand, and theory, on the other; between the empirical content of the research program, on the one hand, and the empirical basis of sociology, on the other. One can observe a number of analogies in the dynamics of functional connections between the structural components of the research program, on the one hand, and the dynamics of functional connections between metatheorizing, theorizing, and empirical analysis in sociology, on the other.

The purpose of the study is to consider the advantages and disadvantages of pollster and sociological approaches to electoral research. The article shows that conducting electoral research in modern election campaigns is carried out equally by pollster (for purely political purposes) and sociological (for scientific and sociological purposes) technologies. It has been proven that optimal results can be achieved by combining pollster and sociological approaches to electoral research. It was determined that today the organization of an effective election campaign requires equally sociologists-pollsters and sociologists-analysts, the result of whose work is respectively collected empirical data and an analytical product, scientific expertise. It has been demonstrated that pollster and sociological approaches to conducting electoral research differ not only in the concepts of public opinion and the styles of its research, but also in the subject field. The electorate as a subject of electoral research acquires different content for different approaches. The pollster approach is more likely to understand the electorate as a circle of voters who vote for one or another party or candidate for an elected position and, in fact, are supporters of a certain political force or personality, while representatives of the sociological approach mostly consider the electorate as a collection of all citizens who vested with the right to vote and who exercise or do not exercise it under specially created conditions. It is argued that the integration of the subject fields of electoral polling and electoral sociological research will allow more effective and productive use of analytical potential in the election campaign, since such an organization of patronage work will help not only to record the results of electoral research, but also to predict the trends of electoral choice, the flow of votes, the reactions of electoral groups to specific political events. The availability of systematic ideas about the types of voters and their personal profiles will help to meaningfully approach the understanding of the electorate.

The article is an attempt to trace in Wiesław Lang’s scientific research the influence of sociological jurisprudence, as initiated in Polish legal science by Leon Petrażycki: the original source of Lang’s scientific inspiration. Not only significant traces of sociological research concepts but also the broader perception of the notion of law typical for this trend in jurisprudence can be seen in W. Lang’s work; these are most visibly evidenced in his works devoted to those aspects of American legal culture that are doctrinally and judicially dominated by the analysis of ‘law in action’, not merely ‘law in books’.

The review raises the traditional social science problem of sociological science, which consists in the impossibility of a smooth transition from empirical knowledge to theoretical knowledge. To solve this problem, a project of sociological science, which would rely on systems theory as its theoretical and methodological framework, is suggested. It is substantiated that such a theoretical and methodological basis will allow sociological research to bridge the gap between empirical and theoretical sociology and thereby embed sociological science together with natural sciences into a single system of sciences.

Accounting cannot be separated from the social interactions that take place in and around organizations. Accounting research has long been concerned with communication and reporting, negotiations and agreements, interactions with external parties, organizational culture, social and economic impacts, professional roles and ethics. Agency theory has become an inescapable mainstream theory. The purpose of this article is to explain how accounting research uses sociological theory. The research methodology used in this article is a literature review of published articles. The use of sociological theory as an analytical tool to explain contemporary accounting phenomena and practices is very relevant because accounting is part of the social sciences. To maintain the integrity of accounting research with a sociological theoretical approach, it is necessary to establish strict boundaries to ensure that accounting research remains focused on accounting principles and does not deviate from its main objectives. In this article, several problems of Analytical Sociology (AS) – a new school of sociological thought – are discussed. A first contention of this article is that the critique of the covering-law model (i.e. the Hempel–Oppenheim scheme) submitted by proponents of AS is problematic. The rejection of rational choice theory in AS is criticized as well. It is argued that the alleged alternative general theory applied by proponents of AS, namely DBO theory (claiming that Desires, Beliefs and Opportunities determine behavior), is equivalent to a wide version of rational choice theory. Furthermore, the focus on theories of the middle range in AS and the neglect of general theories is considered problematic. Finally, it is argued that the goals of AS can better be achieved if it is supplemented by a research program of empirical theory comparison.

Legal Research Methods in understanding and exploring technical aspects of legal research in accordance with the peculiarities of legal science which has a dual paradigm, not only normative in character, but also with sociological empirical character. The research method used is descriptive analytical with a normative juridical approach through the literature and field research stages with data collection techniques through library research. Then the data were analyzed through a qualitative normative method without using numbers and mathematical formulas. Based on the results of the study, it shows that the dichotomy of the scientific paradigm of legal science has actually resulted in a lack of agreement among legal scientists regarding the legal research model that will be developed to answer various legal issues that arise in the life of the legal community. This dual legal scientific paradigm also ultimately creates confusion regarding the research model that will be developed when conducting legal research

The concept of social vitality is being defined and operationalized in order to indicate the possibilities of this concept as an analytical tool for researching rural development.

It summarizes the two main competing explanations of party systems, which are the neo-institutionalist research agenda and the historical-sociological literature. It then evaluates their strengths and limitations. The last two sections are focused on a new method of restructuring the way people think about how parties emerged. This method eventually integrates both approaches within a broad analytical framework.

Legitimacy is central for the capacity of global governance institutions to address problems such as climate change, trade protectionism, and human rights abuses. However, despite legitimacy’s importance for global governance, its workings remain poorly understood. That is the core concern of this volume: to develop an agenda for systematic and comparative research on legitimacy in global governance. In complementary fashion, the chapters address different aspects of the overarching question: whether, why, how, and with what consequences global governance institutions gain, sustain, and lose legitimacy. The volume makes four specific contributions. First, it argues for a sociological approach to legitimacy, centered on perceptions of legitimate global governance among affected audiences. Second, it moves beyond the traditional focus on states as the principal audience for legitimacy in global governance and considers a full spectrum of actors from governments to citizens. Third, it advocates a comparative approach to the study of legitimacy in global governance, and suggests strategies for comparison across institutions, issue areas, countries, societal groups, and time. Fourth, the volume offers the most comprehensive treatment so far of the sociological legitimacy of global governance, covering three broad analytical themes: (1) sources of legitimacy, (2) processes of legitimation and delegitimation, and (3) consequences of legitimacy.

A historical and sociological analysis of the role of Friday sermons in the nation-building process in modern Turkey. Since the formation of the Republic in 1923, Friday sermons (hutbes) have been an important platform that allows the state to engage and communicate with the Turkish people. Sermon topics vary from religious and ethical issues to matters concerning family, women, health, education, business and the environment. Even if politics, in the name of secularism, has been banned from mosques and sermons, questions of how to be a good citizen and honour the Turkish nation have been of utmost importance. With an all-pervading sermon theme of social, national and political unity, this book explores how long-standing religious rituals are utilised and mobilised in the formation of modern political loyalties and national identities. Key features: - Presents a new field of research, which focuses on the role of Islamic oratory in the nation-building process in modern Turkey. - Analyses various forms of contents (including a large number of translations from Turkish to English) of Friday prayer oratory. - Highlights how state patronage conducted through a secular political order has controlled religion, but also how an overpowering state has been challenged by various religious groups and institutions. - Synthesises three basic analytical dimensions of official Muslim oratory: the religious ritual; political and ideological discourses; and governmental supervision through the official religious institution Diyanet.

AbstractThe relevance of a biographical approach to studies about the future is the topic of this chapter. In a discussion that takes its point of departure in theories of time and temporality, the significance of particular aspects of historical periods for what topics about the future are deemed research-worthy is addressed. The chapter addresses how ideas about Progress impacted on notions of time and temporality during earlier historical periods. Empirical studies discussed in this chapter demonstrate their embeddedness in specific circumstances and particular historical periods. These research topics thus provide insights into how changes at the structural level, be they environmental problems such as climate change, pandemics, or credit crises, in any present are woven into and become topics in individual biographical accounts. The early studies of women and time and gendered thoughts about the future, for instance, originated in a period when changes in gender relations in all areas of social life happened at a rapid pace in the Scandinavian countries in particular. The chapter shows that whilst gender, age and social class are essential analytical elements of sociological analysis that transcend historical periods, the contexts of their impact are diverse and varied.

AbstractSince SOGI considerations have started to inform the interpretation and the implementation of the Refugee Convention (Chap. 10.1007/978-3-030-69441-8_1), a broad range of scholars from different disciplines have explored how questions of sexual orientation and gender identity can be effectively addressed within international, supranational and domestic asylum systems. The debate around aspects of RSD and beyond generated by this theoretical exchange within the same discipline and between different research areas has contributed to the (ongoing) normative movement towards a more inclusive Refugee Convention framework. In an attempt to nurture this continuous debate, we outline the theoretical and analytical frameworks that shape the subsequent analysis. We take advantage of the authors’ diverse experience in different academic fields to apply an interdisciplinary approach, addressing our subject from various perspectives. We start from the recognition that a detailed understanding and application of the Refugee Convention is vital as the floor for addressing SOGI asylum claims, but not in itself sufficient to ensure that these are fairly treated. Section 3.2 therefore looks to human rights to show how interweaving human rights frameworks with refugee law heightens understanding in this field of asylum. To this end, the main body of this chapter develops an approach that addresses the failings from a SOGI asylum perspective of international human rights law (IHRL) and international refugee law (IRL) individually. However, we then argue that, without explicitly recognising the gendered and sexualised nature of SOGI asylum, IHRL is only part of the solution. In Sects. 3.3 and 3.4 below, we claim that feminist and queer theories, and particular threads of debate within these broad disciplines, can help to understand the experiences of SOGI minorities fleeing persecution and, importantly, to explain why, despite improvements to the law and guidance that recognise the right to protection on this basis, there has been insufficient progress on the ground. In this way, combining a human rights-based approach that is largely legal with political and sociological contributions from feminism and queer theories facilitates a more holistic analysis.

AbstractThis chapter provides two contributions. On the one hand, it argues that morality is a mine field for sociologist as they lack the analytical tools to judge what is moral and what is not. Yet, historical sociology has shown that morality is bound to culture, and accordingly culture and cultural practices should gain the center stage of the sociological work on morality. Further on, we claim that social movements scholars can show that specific contentions directly relate to major political cleavages where major debates about moral issues are staged. Our second contribution offers an empirical example of such a research agenda. Using original survey and interview data on pro-migrant’s rights activists and environmentalists, we show that activists from these two groups form a common community—the moral voicing community. They share an understanding of the social problems they are committed for. Activists from both groups judge as immoral when specific social or cultural groups lack basic rights or suffer from environmental devastations and interpret these assessments through a prism of injustice. Finally, we show that these shared meanings on our living-together are continuously constructed through a specific relational mechanism. Indeed, ongoing and direct conversations are necessary to maintain those shared views and to ultimately sustain their activism.

AbstractThere are still many sociologists who are skeptical of the findings of big data-based analysis of social-data, questioning the potential of this knowledge production and its contribution to the scientific discourse of sociology. The chapter shows that this tension can be addressed through the redefinition of the research methodological basis of sociology, by the organic incorporation of data science know-how into its methods; the combined application of qualitative and quantitative analysis; and, the use of knowledge-driven science instead of the data-driven approach. The theoretical, methodological, and topical pathways between traditional and computational sociology emerge gradually along the chapter, which also includes plenty of illustrative examples of research situated at the interplay between sociology and data science. As our overview shows, there are new possibilities for sociological research, which are, in some sense, just by-products of information science. We introduce recently developed methods, which can be applied to specific sociological problems outside the scope of business applications. We present sociological topics not yet studied in this area and show new insights the approach can offer to classical sociological questions. As our aim is to encourage sociologists to enter this field, we discuss the new methods on the base of the classic quantitative approach, using its concepts and terminology and addressing the question of how traditionally trained sociologists can acquire new skills.

AbstractIt will be argued that the dominant form of current academic science is based on ideas and concepts about science and research that date back to philosophy and sociology that was developed since the 1930s. It will be discussed how this philosophy and sociology of science has informed the ideas, myths and ideology about science held by the scientific community and still determines the popular view of science. It is even more amazing when we realize that these ideas are philosophically and sociologically untenable and since the 1970s were declared obsolete by major scholars in these same disciplines. To demonstrate this, I delve deep to discuss the distinct stages that scholars in philosophy, sociology and history of science since 1945 to 2000 have gone through to leave the analytical-positivistic philosophy behind. I will be focusing on developments of their thinking about major topics such as: how scientific knowledge is produced, the scientific method; the status of scientific knowledge and the development of our ideas about ‘truth’ and the relation of our claims to reality. It will appear that the positivistic ideas about science producing absolute truth, about ‘the unique scientific method’, its formal logical approach and its timeless foundation as a guarantee for our value-free, objective knowledge were not untenable. This is to show how thoroughly the myth has been demystified in philosophy and sociology of science. You think after these fifty pages I am kicking a dead horse? Not at all! This scientific demystification has unfortunately still not reached active scientists. In fact, the popular image of science and research is still largely based on a that Legend. This is not without consequence as will be shown in Chap. 10.1007/978-94-024-2115-6_3. These images of science have shaped and in fact distorted the organisational structures of academia and the interaction between its institutes and disciplines. It also affects the relationship of science with its stakeholders in society, its funders, the many publics private and public, and policy makers in government. In short, it determines to a large degree the growth of knowledge with major effects on society.

Abstract The longevity of Hip Hop dance has generated a rich cultural legacy that links it with music, spoken word, art, writing, and photography. Another important feature of Hip Hop dance is the way it situates the body in space and place. Although Hip Hop dance is a global form, it retains strong ties to the “local,” a quality that reflects Hip Hop’s origins as a street culture. This chapter provides a series of conceptual and theoretical tools with which to contextualize and think about Hip Hop dance. Drawing on contemporary sociological and cultural theories of key themes, including the body, space and place, and cultural scenes, as well as work around identity and belonging, the chapter will equip readers with the necessary conceptual and analytical skills to begin to think critically about Hip Hop dance and its significance as a contemporary cultural practice.

Abstract Sociologists are increasingly turning to machine learning (ML) for data-driven discovery and predictive modeling. ML methods help classify data, compute new measures, predict outcomes and events, make causal inferences, and collaborate within a common-task framework. Although predictive analytics has become a mainstay of public policy analysis and evaluation, the contributions of ML to theory building are less widely appreciated. ML-derived data classifications can reveal patterns that require a new theory, while predictive performance metrics can point to shortcomings of existing theory and motivate inductive theorizing. ML equips research analysts to venture outside the “general linear reality” of classical statistics and the deductive framing of much social science research. Both quantitative and qualitative sociologists also scrutinize ML applications by industry and government to reveal implications for distributive justice, social inequality, and algorithmic bias. In short, ML is now an integral part of sociological inquiry as a discovery-enabling analytical tool as well as a controversial object of study.

In this chapter, I give an account of my experience using institutional ethnography (IE). IE is a sociological approach that provides methodological and analytical tools throughout the whole research process. The basic goal for researchers who employ IE is to describe and explain how institutions shape people’s everyday experiences. In turn, such experiences serve as a window into the institution – they are a means to learn about the institution itself. Certain parts of the framework, such as work knowledge, institutional capture, mapmaking, and standpoint have been particularly useful for me. I believe IE helped me to discover patterns in my empirical material that I otherwise would not have seen – such as how variation in the interview data is connected to the institutional setting. In the final stages of the project, and in later research, I have not used IE as explicitly, but it continues to work as an analytic lens that reminds me to search for the connections between local experience and more general institutional processes. I conclude the chapter with a discussion about the ways in which IE is particularly well suited for research on the interaction between professionals and users in a welfare state setting.

The chapter discusses the various analytical methods used in French policy studies. It begins by mapping out the range of methods used in French academic policy studies. Such work mainly deals with policy-making process and their analysis, with an emphasis on the role of elite, expert, and institutional constraints. Issues and concepts from (political) sociology mainly frame these works. Policy analysis borrowed its methods from (political) sociology rather than developed a specific set of methodological approaches. Drawing on sociological approaches, policy analysis in France features a preference for qualitative over quantitative methods. Also, empirical studies prevail, and over time, small-n comparative research frameworks were introduced on a more systematic basis. The chapter also develops an analysis of the most popular methods used in the past years among practitionners, such as socio-economic appraisal in transport or housing sectors, indicators in environmental and economic sectors, and argumentative methods in public institutional debates.

This subject became more actual in the recent geopolitical context where we can notice contradictory trends between integration/globalisation and fragmentation, or we are challenging by the issues of migration. Despite of a current tendency, (in fact, is a recurrent one), that national identity is imagined and constructed, the author advocates a “civic nationalism” that makes a claim to respecting cultural differences but also to build and secure a specific national identity very useful during dialog with other nations. On the other hand, we are witnessing to increasing diversification of European societies and attempts to create a collective identity at European level in order to enhance a consciousness of being European. The opinion expressed by the author is that there are no contradictions between to be national and to be European. The paper identifies the main methodological issues within sociological research to measure diverse dimensions of national and European identity. In this respect, we are interested to scrutinize the meanings of national and of European identity used by several universities from Europe, or inside of various research programs (Eurobarometer, European Values Study, European Social Survey and International Social Survey Programme). Conclusions in this paper are purely conceptual and are not based on own empirical survey. However, there are many secondary data sets which are available for exploitation and with a great potential to develop deeply and analytical analysis. At the same time, the models examined here could be an argument for future projects research which are preparing to be submitted in the following competition.

This paper outlines the construction phase of the consumption profiling, algorithmic awareness, and digital literacy tool within the ALGOFEED project. ALGOFEED, funded as an Italian Research Project of Significant National Interest (PRIN), seeks to illuminate the socio-cultural impacts of platform-based feedback loops while developing a novel methodological and theoretical framework for the sociological examination of consumer culture algorithms. The project aims to produce unique empirical insights into cultural consumption patterns on digital platforms in Italy. Specifically, ALGOFEED investigates the effects of automated content recommendations on platforms like TikTok and YouTube on individual and collective cultural consumption behaviours over time. The primary objectives include acquiring distinctive empirical findings on platform-driven cultural consumption in Italy, advancing a fresh methodological and theoretical approach for studying algorithmic consumer culture sociologically, and fostering algorithmic awareness among Italian consumers through impactful diffusion activities grounded in a transformative paradigm. In this study, the authors introduce the empirical tool designed to detect the feedback loop and define its components: digital skills, Platform Usage Type, and Algorithmic Awareness.

The article presents a survey of main prospects and procedures of archeological vessel shapes study employed by West European and American researchers. Development of methods and techniques used in vessel shapes description and interpretation as a source of cultural-historical information is analyzed. The basic concepts of vessel shapes analytical study were formulated by A.O. Shepard in the 1950s. She proposed principal procedural approaches in her fundamental work (1956). Later on, these approaches gained momentum. The procedure of vessel shape disintegration into structural parts and evaluation of proportions of their рarameters is the most widespread method. The New Archeology impact exemplifies in striving for clear quantitative definition of vessel parameters and in elaboration of a functional perception of the material culture development. New sources (ethnography and experiments) are come to draw in study of vessel shapes. Study of pottery in traditional societies has brought up two problems: 1) incongruity of researchers’ typological developments and evaluation terms of the very culture-bearers and 2) limitations of functional and adaptive models of interpretation. The first problem has brought about the task description of a more detailed and objective fixation of vessel shapes peculiarities while vessels groupings further on is performed by dint of various mathematic and statistical methods. The second problem has brought about a wide drawing of sociological and cultural research concepts that allow proceeding to study of vessel shapes features in interpretation of data obtained as results of certain mental processes and behavioral patterns that the people formed. Ethnoarchaeology, i.e. study of traditional societies with techniques employed in archeology, makes a considerable contribution to this prospect development. Individual researchers also carry on study of traditional potters’ labor skills in specifically simulated conditions. A number of researchers assume that contemporary techniques of vessel shapes analysis fit poorly the developed notions of the nature of the phenomenon and express the necessity to overcome the flaw. In general, development of views on vessel shapes in West European and American historical studies conform the same regularities as the Russian archeology does.
