Three-component (3-C) amplitude versus offset (AVO) inversion is the AVO analysis of the three major energies in the seismic data, P-waves, S-waves and converted waves. For each type of energy the reflection coefficients at the boundary are a function of the contrast across the boundary in velocity, density and Poisson's ratio, and of the angle of incidence of the incoming wave. 3-C AVO analysis exploits these relationships to analyse the AVO changes in the P, S, and converted waves. 3-C AVO analysis is generally done on P, S, and converted wave data collected from a single source on 3-C geophones. Since most seismic sources generate both P and S-waves, it follows that most 3-C seismic data may be used in 3-C AVO inversion. Processing of the P-wave, S-wave and converted wave gathers is nearly the same as for single-component P-wave gathers. In split-spread shooting, the P-wave and S-wave energy on the radial component is one polarity on the forward shot and the opposite polarity on the back shot. Therefore to use both sides of the shot, the back shot must be rotated 180 degrees before it can be stacked with the forward shot. The amplitude of the returning energy is a function of all three components, not just the vertical or radial, so all three components must be stacked for P-waves, then for S-waves, and finally for converted waves. After the gathers are processed, reflectors are picked and the amplitudes are corrected for free-surface effects, spherical divergence and the shot and geophone array geometries. Next the P and S-wave interval velocities are calculated from the P and S-wave moveouts. Then the amplitude response of the P and S-wave reflections are analysed to give Poisson's ratio. The two solutions are then compared and adjusted until they match each other and the data. Three-component AVO inversion not only yields information about the lithologies and pore-fluids at a specific location; it also provides the interpreter with good correlations between the P-waves and the S-waves, and between the P and converted waves, thus greatly expanding the value of 3-C seismic data.

Abstract Most frequency-dependent AVO inversions are currently based on an approximate equation derived using an isotropic medium. However, actual reservoirs usually show anisotropy, such as shale reservoirs, tight sandstone reservoirs and fractured reservoirs. We propose a joint frequency-dependent AVO (JFAVO) inversion in an anisotropic medium based on a periodic layered double-porosity medium. This JFAVO will allow us to quantitatively study the influence of fluids on the dispersion of PP- and PS-wave velocities and anisotropic parameters. First, we used a double-porosity medium to analyse the frequency-dependent characteristics of velocities and anisotropy parameters. We found that the anisotropic parameters show obvious dispersions, similar to those of velocities. Then, we derived the JFAVO inversion based on Rüger's equation to extract the dispersion of velocities and anisotropic parameters. Finally, we analysed the stability and applicability of the inversion algorithm, and used three sets of models to analyse the sensitivity of dispersion properties to fluids. The numerical analysis results show that PP-wave velocity dispersion and anisotropic parameter δ dispersion are sensitive to fluids, whereas, the velocity dispersion of the PS-wave is not. When saturation exceeds 80%, the velocity dispersion and anisotropic parameter dispersion properties are not sensitive to fluids.

Abstract The frequency-dependent amplitude-versus-offset (FAVO) method has become a practical method for fluid detection in sand reservoirs. At present, most FAVO inversions are based on the assumption that reservoirs are isotropy, but the application effect is not satisfactory for fractured reservoirs. Hence, we analyse the frequency variation characteristics of anisotropy parameters in tight sandstone reservoirs based on a new petrophysical model, and propose a stepwise anisotropic FAVO inversion method to extract frequency-dependent attributes from prestack seismic field data. First, we combine the improved Brie's law with the fine-fracture model to analyse frequency-dependent characteristics of velocities and Thomsen anisotropy parameters at different gas saturations and fracture densities. Then, we derive an anisotropic FAVO inversion algorithm based on Rüger's approximation formula and propose a stepwise anisotropic FAVO inversion method to obtain the dispersions of anisotropy parameters. Finally, we propose a method that combines the inversion spectral decomposition with the stepwise anisotropy FAVO inversion and apply it to tight sand reservoirs in the Xinchang area. We use P-wave velocity dispersion and anisotropy parameter ε dispersion to optimise favourable areas. Numerical analysis results show that velocity dispersion of the P-wave is sensitive to fracture density, which can be used for fracture prediction in fractured reservoirs. In contrast, anisotropic parameter dispersion is sensitive to gas saturation and can be used for fluid detection. The seismic data inversion results show that velocity dispersion of the P-wave and anisotropic parameter dispersion are sensitive to fractured reservoirs in the second member of Xujiahe Group, which is consistent with logging interpretation results.

Within minimalism, we may assume derivations to involve subderivations, connected by the interface components dealing with sound and meaning (layered derivations). If so, complex adjectival constructions involving predicates like tough/easy (as in John is easy to please) receive a natural account in terms of reanalysis taking place at these interface components, turning a complex adjectival construction into a simplex adjective which can be merged in predicative or attributive position in the next derivation layer. Arguments against reanalysis address earlier, more complicated conceptions of reanalysis, and fail to distinguish plain and expanded tough-constructions, the latter not showing any reanalysis characteristics. In a layered-derivation cum reanalysis approach, the arguments for empty operator movement in the embedded infinitival clause disappear, and the reanalysed construction shows the properties of an adjectival passive instead.

In the Bulgarian Black Sea shelf, several gas fields have been discovered in Maastrichtian–Paleocene sediments to date. In this study, amplitude versus offset analysis (AVO) was carried out, and the extended elastic impedance (EEI) was also used, to predict fluid and lithology properties. Thus, in these special cases, AVO (or reflection angle) can significantly de-risk the existing Paleocene prospects and allow to focus on the Miocene–Oligocene successions, where some prospects have also been identified. By examining the variations in angle amplitude (or offset), it is possible to unravel lithology and fluid effects on the top of a reservoir. Seismic modeling is used to determine what type of seismic response, in terms of AVO, to expect at the depth of interest in the study area. There are five classes or types of AVO responses, and in the study area classes 1 and 2 were defined in the Miocene–Oligocene prospects. Brine-filled reservoirs and conglomerates exhibit class 1 AVO response, whereas gas-filled reservoirs show class 2 AVO responses. EEI has the ability to give estimates for elastic parameters, such as Vp/Vs ratio, bulk modulus, shear modulus, Poisson’s ratio and other parameters. In the current study, simultaneous inversion testing was done and, analyzing all the wells together, Poisson’s ratio is the most promising fluid and lithology indicator, showing good separation between water and gas responses, although there is some overlap. Projection of EEI at an angle of 38° through brine points gives a useful separation of brine, 10% gas and 90% gas reservoirs. However, the amplitude of the resulting projection is still low, which may make it difficult to resolve fluid variation once seismic noise has been added.

Amplitude variation with offset (AVO) inversion of an anisotropic data set is a challenging task. Nonnegligible differences in the anisotropy parameters between the various lithologies make the seismic data AVO response completely different from the isotropic synthetic seismogram. In this case, it is difficult to invert for VP/VS and density consistent with well-log data. AVO inversion using pseudoisotropic elastic properties is a practical solution to this problem. Verification of this method was performed using data from an offshore Western Australia field. It was found that wavelet extraction and density inversion are improved significantly by replacing the isotropic elastic properties with the pseudoisotropic properties. Inverted density shows reasonable quality and therefore can be included in the reservoir characterization study. Postinversion analyses can be performed effectively on the pseudoisotropic elastic properties because crossplot analysis shows the increased separation of different lithofacies due to contrasts in anisotropy parameters. This result could have significant implications for other fields, as shale constitutes most of the overburden in conventional oil and gas fields and often shows strong elastic anisotropy.

ImportanceOncologic outcomes among patients with rectal cancer after developing local recurrence and/or distant metastases remain poorly studied.ObjectiveTo analyze the trend of overall survival after treatment failure for patients with rectal cancer within three consecutive phase 2 or 3 trials of the German Rectal Cancer Study Group.Design, Setting, and ParticipantsThis cohort study is a post hoc analysis of 3 randomized phase 2 or 3 trials (CAO/ARO/AIO-94, -04, and -12 trials, conducted in Germany) that included 1948 patients with locally advanced rectal adenocarcinoma. The CAO/ARO/AIO-94 trial recruited patients between February 1995 and September 2002, the CAO/ARO/AIO-04 trial recruited patients between July 2006 and February 2010, and the CAO/ARO/AIO-12 trial recruited patients between June 2015 and January 2018. Statistical analysis was conducted between September 2022 and March 2023.ExposuresA total of 119 of 391 patients in the CAO/ARO/AIO-94 trial group A, 295 of 1236 patients in the CAO/ARO/AIO-04 trial, and 69 of 306 in the CAO/ARO/AIO-12 trial experienced treatment failure (R2 resection or local recurrence or distant metastases) and were included in further analyses.Main Outcomes and MeasuresCharacteristics of treatment failure and overall survival were assessed in all 3 trial cohorts.ResultsOf the 1948 patients treated in the 3 trials, 15 were excluded because of missing data. Of the remaining 1933 patients (median age, 62.5 years [range, 19-84 years]; 1363 men [71%] and 570 women [29%]) with locally advanced rectal adenocarcinoma (cT3 or 4 or cN+) treated within 3 consecutive clinical trials, 483 experienced treatment failure and were analyzed. After a median follow-up of 36 months (IQR, 24-51 months) for all patients, overall survival after treatment failure was significantly improved in the CAO/ARO/AIO-04 trial (at 3 years, 44% [IQR, 37%-51%]; hazard ratio [HR], 0.61 [95% CI, 0.47-0.79]) and further improved in the CAO/ARO/AIO-12 trial (at 3 years, 73% [IQR, 60%-87%]; HR, 0.32 [95% CI, 0.18-0.54]) compared with the CAO/ARO/AIO-94 trial (at 3 years, 30% [IQR, 22%-39%]) (both P < .001). Distant metastasis was the main reason for treatment failure throughout a 5-year follow-up (range, 67%-87%), and the relative risk for treatment failure was highest in the first 18 months in all 3 trials. ypTNM stage was significantly associated with the risk and time interval to treatment failure. Improvement in overall survival after treatment failure was independent of sex. Conclusions and RelevanceThis cohort study suggests that advancements in salvage strategies during the past decades have likely improved overall survival among patients with rectal cancer who experienced treatment failure.

Mestena Grande field is located in northeast Jim Hogg Co., Texas. It produces gas and condensate, primarily from the middle member of the Middle Eocene Queen City formation. The producing zone is a deep, thin, high impedance sandstone which generates amplitude anomalies on the stacked data. AVO (amplitude versus offset) analyses were performed to investigate those anomalies and determine if they could aid in field development or exploration along the trend. Modeling the AVO response of a productive well has predicted an amplitude decrease with offset from a high impedance sandstone. However, amplitudes increase with offset on the crest of the field. At Mestena Grande field, three categories of seismic amplitudes correspond with production with only one exception. The first category exhibits strong amplitudes on the stacked data and amplitudes increase with offset. This amplitude category is seen around the best wells in the field. Second are the moderate amplitudes which do not increase with offset that surround the wells producing at moderate rates. The third category is characterized by very weak amplitudes which decrease with offset, occurring near all but one of the dry holes. The disagreement between the results of the modelling and the real data is attributed to the lack of accurate shear wave velocities and the presence of very thin beds.

I read with interest R. C. Burnett’s paper on amplitude and AVO analyses and found it surprising that, when using a low Poisson’s ratio for the gas sands, there was not a greater difference in the AVO response compared to that of using a high Poisson’s ratio (Figure 11 in his paper). This is contrary to what I would expect based on my experience with AVO modeling. I have found that when there is a large change in Poisson’s ratio (greater than 0.2) between layers, this usually has a significant effect on the AVO response even if the layers are thin.

The aim of this study is to evaluate the current practice of statistical analysis of eye data in clinical science papers published in British Journal of Ophthalmology (BJO) and to determine whether the practice of statistical analysis has improved in the past two decades. All clinical science papers (n=125) published in BJO in January–June 2017 were reviewed for their statistical analysis approaches for analysing primary ocular measure. We compared our findings to the results from a previous paper that reviewed BJO papers in 1995. Of 112 papers eligible for analysis, half of the studies analysed the data at an individual level because of the nature of observation, 16 (14%) studies analysed data from one eye only, 36 (32%) studies analysed data from both eyes at ocular level, one study (1%) analysed the overall summary of ocular finding per individual and three (3%) studies used the paired comparison. Among studies with data available from both eyes, 50 (89%) of 56 papers in 2017 did not analyse data from both eyes or ignored the intereye correlation, as compared with in 60 (90%) of 67 papers in 1995 (P=0.96). Among studies that analysed data from both eyes at an ocular level, 33 (92%) of 36 studies completely ignored the intereye correlation in 2017, as compared with in 16 (89%) of 18 studies in 1995 (P=0.40). A majority of studies did not analyse the data properly when data from both eyes were available. The practice of statistical analysis did not improve in the past two decades. Collaborative efforts should be made in the vision research community to improve the practice of statistical analysis for ocular data.

The Antarctic Centennial Oscillation (ACO) is a paleoclimate temperature cycle that originates in the Southern Hemisphere, is the presumptive evolutionary precursor of the contemporary Antarctic Oscillation (AAO), and teleconnects to the Northern Hemisphere to influence global temperature. In this study we investigate the internal climate dynamics of the ACO over the last 21 millennia using stable water isotopes frozen in ice cores from 11 Antarctic drill sites as temperature proxies. Spectral and time series analyses reveal that ACOs occurred at all 11 sites over all time periods evaluated, suggesting that the ACO encompasses all of Antarctica. From the Last Glacial Maximum through the Last Glacial Termination (LGT), ACO cycles propagated on a multicentennial time scale from the East Antarctic coastline clockwise around Antarctica in the streamline of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC). The velocity of teleconnection (VT) is correlated with the geophysical characteristics of drill sites, including distance from the ocean and temperature. During the LGT, the VT to coastal sites doubled while the VT to inland sites decreased fourfold, correlated with increasing solar insolation at 65°N. These results implicate two interdependent mechanisms of teleconnection, oceanic and atmospheric, and suggest possible physical mechanisms for each. During the warmer Holocene, ACOs arrived synchronously at all drill sites examined, suggesting that the VT increased with temperature. Backward extrapolation of ACO propagation direction and velocity places its estimated geographic origin in the Southern Ocean east of Antarctica, in the region of the strongest sustained surface wind stress over any body of ocean water on Earth. ACO period is correlated with all major cycle parameters except cycle symmetry, consistent with a forced, undamped oscillation in which the driving energy affects all major cycle metrics. Cycle period and symmetry are not discernibly different for the ACO and AAO over the same time periods, suggesting that they are the same climate cycle. We postulate that the ACO/AAO is generated by relaxation oscillation of Westerly Wind velocity forced by the equator-to-pole temperature gradient and propagated regionally by identified air-sea-ice interactions.

Amplitude variation with offset (AVO), or amplitude variation with angle (AVA), analyses of seismic reflection data are becoming increasingly popular in the exploration industry (Ostrander, 1984; Pichin and Mitchell, 1991; Mazzotti and Mirri, 1991) and also in scientific studies of the earth’s crust (Juhlin, 1990). In the exploration industry, AVO analyses are particularly suitable for the detection and mapping of gas zones since reservoirs often consist of shale with high Poisson’s ratio (high [Formula: see text]) overlying gas bearing sands with low Poisson’s ratio (low [Formula: see text]). If the gas sand has lower impedance than the overlying shale, the magnitude of the reflection coefficient will increase with increasing angle of incidence or offset. Other combinations of rock types will also show a similar increase in magnitude, such as shale over hard limestone, but the sign of the reflection coefficient will be positive in most of these cases. Therefore, if the polarity of the reflection can be determined to be negative and there is an increase in the absolute amplitude of the reflection with offset, then this is highly indicative of a gas bearing zone.

Abstract More than 100 ABO subgroup-related variations were detected in the coding region of glycosyltransferases, which may be causative for a weak blood group antigen A or B expression. Most variation in expression is explained genetically by mutations that reduce transferase activity. However, a substantial number of weak variants have not yet been explained by current methods. We recently postulated a role of miRNA in the regulation of blood group A antigen expression levels. By using different approaches, including gene array analysis, luciferase reporter assay and overexpression of glycosyltransferase specific miRNAs in primary hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs), we found that miR-331-3p directly targets glycosyltransferase A and B mRNA. Now we have been further embarking on the underlying mechanisms of miRNA and glycosyltransferase interactions and show that the effects of miR-331-3p are mediated by inhibition of transcription factor SP1, which is a major regulator of the ABO gene, thereby resulting in downregulation of blood group A antigen expression in A2O individuals by up to 80% and in A1O individuals by up to 50%. Using microRNA target prediction tools we also identified Sp1 as a potential target gene for miR-331-3p. Western blot analyses of glycosyltransferase protein expression showed that overexpression of miR-331 led to a decreased glycosyltransferase and SP1 protein expression. Further approaches with the SP1 inhibitor, mithramycin A, revealed similar results. Analysis of Aw04/O1v genotypes revealed elevated miRNA levels, thus confirming microRNAs as regulators of blood group glycosyltransferase expression. Our findings extend our understanding of blood group regulation in carriers of weak blood group variants. Involvement of miRNAs in the downregulation of ABO blood group antigen expression may also provide an explanation for observed changes of ABO antigen expression in abnormal processes such as tumorigenesis, pregnancy and aging. Furthermore, this pathway may play a role in the regulation of other blood group variants (for instance Rhesus, KELL, amongst others). Disclosures No relevant conflicts of interest to declare.

Abstract Biological variability is a major contributor to the inaccuracy of cardiovascular risk assessments based on measurement of lipids, lipoproteins, or apolipoproteins. We obtained estimates of biological variation (CVb) for 20 healthy adults and calculated the percentiles of CVb as an expression of the variability of CVb among individuals for cholesterol, triglyceride, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, apolipoprotein (apo) A-I, apo B, and lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] by four biweekly measurements of these analytes. The CVb for the group was approximately 6-7% for cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, apo A-I, and apo B; approximately 9% for LDL cholesterol; and 28% for triglyceride. However, for each analyte, there was a considerable variation of CVb among individuals. For all analytes except Lp(a), there was no relation between the individual's CVb and the analyte concentration. Lp(a) was inversely related to CVb, and there was a very wide variation in the CVb for Lp(a) among the participants, ranging from 1% to 51%. The number of independent analyses to perform to accurately assess an individual's risk for coronary artery disease should be determined on the basis of the individual CVb for a given analyte rather than the average CVb.

Traditional amplitude variation with offset and azimuth (AVOAz) analysis for fracture characterization extracts fracture properties through analysis of reflection AVOAz to determine anisotropic parameters (e.g., Thomsen’s parameters) that are then related to fracture properties. The validity of this method relies on the basic assumption that a fractured unit can be viewed as an equivalent anisotropic medium. As a rule of thumb, this assumption is taken to be valid when the fracture spacing is less than [Formula: see text]. Under the effective medium assumption, diffractions from individual fractures destructively interfere and only specular reflections from boundaries of a fractured layer can be observed in seismic data. The effective medium theory has been widely used in fracture characterization, and its applicability has been validated through many field applications. However, through numerical simulations, we find that diffractions from fracture clusters can significantly distort the AVOAz signatures when a fracture system has irregular spacing even though the average fracture spacing is much smaller than a wavelength (e.g., [Formula: see text]). Contamination by diffractions from irregularly spaced fractures on reflections can substantially bias the fracture properties estimated from AVOAz analysis and may possibly lead to incorrect estimates of fracture properties. Additionally, through Monte Carlo simulations, we find that fracture spacing uncertainty inverted from amplitude variation with offset (AVO) analysis can be up to 10%–20% when fractures are not uniformly distributed, which should be the realistic state of fractures present in the earth. Also, AVOAz and AVO analysis gives more reliable estimates of fracture properties when reflections at the top of the fractured layer are used compared with those from the bottom of the layer.

AbstractA large number of changeovers exist in multi-item and small lot size production mode, which lead to a long setup time and significantly influence productivity. However, setup time has received significantly less attention in previous studies regarding the single machine scheduling (SMS) problem. This paper investigates the SMS problem with sequence-dependent setup time (SDST). First, a model of SMS-SDST is developed to minimise the makespan. An earliest due date (EDD), SDST, and ant colony optimisation (ACO) heuristic algorithm is presented. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm, Taguchi’s robust design method is employed to define the best parameter values. Related results are analysed by statistical tools. The computational experiments are compared with an ACO algorithm and a genetic algorithm. The experimental results and statistical analyses show that the proposed EDD-SDST-ACO is effective for the problem.

AIMS: To analyze the effects of low-level laser therapy (660nm) in the treatment of striae alba.METHODS: A randomized clinical trial was conducted with 20 women equally divided into a control group and a treatment group. For inclusion, they should have striae alba in the gluteal region and accept to participate in the study. Exclusion criteria were other treatment for striae, pregnancy, steroid use, smoking, cancer diagnosis, hemorrhagic areas on the skin, diagnosis of epilepsy, diagnosis of thrombosis, or any cognitive impairment. Twelve applications of 660 nm laser were performed for four weeks. After another four weeks of follow-up, a reevaluation was performed. After each application, photos were taken from the region to evaluate the size of the striae by means of scanned planimetry, which calculates the percentage of area occupied by the striae. For this evaluation, the photos taken at the first application (AV1), the sixth (AV2), the 12th (AV3) and the last evaluation, after four weeks of treatment completion (AV4), were used. Qualitative evaluations were also performed by touch (depth) and visual inspection (hue and size).RESULTS: The analysis by planimetry showed that there was no difference between the area occupied by the striae when comparing the various evaluations of the same group, until the AV3. However in AV4 (four weeks after the last laser application) of the treatment group, there was a statistically significant decrease of the stria area in relation to AV1. In the control group, there was no difference between AV4 and the other evaluations. In the comparison between the two groups, there was no difference in the first three evaluations. However in AV4 the treatment group showed a smaller area of the striae in relation to the control group. In the qualitative analysis the treated group had lower visibility and less depth of the striae to the touch.CONCLUSIONS: Therapy with 12 sessions of low-level laser for four weeks had a positive effect on the treatment of striae alba, with results becoming evident only four weeks after the last application. The 660 nm laser showed to be a non-invasive, painless and fast-applied method.

Abstract Spatially explicit phylogeographic analyses can be performed with an inference framework that employs relaxed random walks to reconstruct phylogenetic dispersal histories in continuous space. This core model was first implemented 10 years ago and has opened up new opportunities in the field of phylodynamics, allowing researchers to map and analyze the spatial dissemination of rapidly evolving pathogens. We here provide a detailed and step-by-step guide on how to set up, run, and interpret continuous phylogeographic analyses using the programs BEAUti, BEAST, Tracer, and TreeAnnotator.

The study uses the 2017 parliamentary elections results to analyses spatial patterns of votes in the city of Prague. A unique approach combining contextual and compositional data is introduced. Census data and data indicating the quality of life are reassigned to a shared entity – an address point, and analysed via automatic linear modelling. The model explained 69 % of spatial variance of votes share for the conservative TOP 09 party and the winning ANO 2011 movement, but only 19 % for the Pirate Party and the Mayors and Independence movement. Future research might focus on finding variables which would explain spatial variance of these parties’ vote shares. Abother possibility is the development of a methodology for studying votes spatiality within urban areas, in order to develop a robust theory.

AbstractSix clays from various deposits were studied for their use in the production of structural clay products. The clays were characterized using chemical (X-ray fluorescence), mineralogical (X-ray diffraction) and thermal (differential scanning calorimetry/thermogravimetry) analyses. Particle-size distribution was determined by laser diffraction, plasticity by the Pfefferkorn method and the residue by the sieve-size method. Next, specimens were formed by extrusion and characterized by their linear thermal shrinkage (on drying and firing), water absorption, bulk density, porosity and compressive strength. The clays were, in general, suitable for the manufacture of structural ceramics, mainly bricks. The clays from flooded pits (AV1 and AV2) were classified as floodplain clays and alluvial clays. The clays mined in mountainous regions (AM1 and AM2, as well as AV1) were characterized as siliceous clays due to the abundance of free SiO2 phases.

ObjectivesTo analyse the association between ABO blood group and aortic disease using data on blood donors and transfused patients from Sweden.DesignThis was a retrospective study using data from the Swedish portion of the Scandinavian Donations and Transfusions Database. The association between ABO blood group and aortic disease was analysed using log-linear Poisson regression models and presented as incidence rate ratios (IRRs).SettingSwedish population-based study.ParticipantsThe study cohort consisted of 1 164 561 Swedish blood donors and 961 637 transfused patients with a combined follow-up time of 29 390 649 person-years.Primary and secondary outcome measuresIRRs of aortic events (ie, aortic aneurysms and/or aortic dissections) in relation to patient blood group.ResultsA total of 20 684 aortic events occurred during the study period. Non-O donors and patients had similar incidence of aortic events when compared with blood group O donors and patients with an IRR of 0.98 (95% CI, 0.93–1.04) and 1.00 (95% CI, 0.97–1.03), respectively. There were no differences between non-O and blood group O individuals when aortic dissections and aortic aneurysms were analysed separately. Blood group B conferred a lower risk of aortic aneurysms in the patient cohort when compared with blood group O (IRR, 0.90; 95% CI, 0.85–0.96).ConclusionsIn the present study, there were no statistically significant associations between ABO blood group and the risk of aortic disease. A possible protective effect of blood group B was observed in the patient cohort but this finding requires further investigation.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effects of mechanical ventilation (MV) of high-oxygen concentration in pulmonary dysfunction in adult and elderly rats. METHODS: Twenty-eight adult (A) and elderly (E), male rats were ventilated for 1 hour (G-AV1 and G-EV1) or for 3 hours (G-AV3 and G-EV3). A and E groups received a tidal volume of 7 mL/kg, a positive end-expiratory pressure of 5 cm H2O, respiratory rate of 70 cycles per minute, and an inspiratory fraction of oxygen of 1. We evaluated total protein content and malondialdehyde in bronchoalveolar lavages (BAL) and performed lung histomorphometrical analyses. RESULTS: In G-EV1 animals, total protein in BAL was higher (33.0±1.9 µg/mL) compared with G-AV1 (23.0±2.0 µg/mL). Upon 180 minutes of MV, malondialdehyde levels increased in elderly (G-EV3) compared with adult (G-AV3) groups. Malondialdehyde and total proteins in BAL after 3 hours of MV were higher in elderly group than in adults. In G-EV3 group we observed alveolar septa dilatation and significative increase in neutrofiles number in relation to adult group at 60 and 180 minutes on MV. CONCLUSION: A higher fraction of inspired oxygen in short courses of mechanical ventilation ameliorates the parameters studied in elderly lungs.

The presence of coal in complex structures featuring sandstone reservoirs seriously hinders reservoir characterization and the identification of fluids in subsurface formations. Coal can strongly obscure the reflections from sandstone, easily leading to false bright spots during exploration; thus, reservoirs and their boundaries cannot be accurately described. Furthermore, sandstone layers intercalated with thin coal seams form complex composite reflections. Therefore, considering the complexity of coal-bearing reservoirs together with the geological evolution of coal and actual logging data, this study systematically analyses the seismic reflections of coal-bearing reservoirs. First, the seismic responses of various coal-bearing reservoir models are established by evaluating multiple well logs of the target layer. Then, by forward-simulating theoretical seismic data, seismic response models comprising different lithological combinations are established. Finally, seismic attributes (such as the amplitude, frequency and phase) of coal-bearing and non-coal-bearing strata are compared, and the seismic responses of typical lithological combinations of coal-bearing reservoirs are summarized. A single-well model test and a comparison between synthetic and seismic data confirm that numerical simulations can be used to forward model the seismic response characteristics of different sand–coal models, thereby eliminating the influences of coal and accurately characterizing sandstone reservoirs.

The global mean sea level (GMSL) has been measured precisely by the space geodetic remote-sensing technique of radar altimetry since the 1990s. Aside from the well-studied seasonality and secular sea level rise, here we focus on GMSL variation on the interannual–decadal (ID) timescales (GMSL-ID) and investigate the influences of the climatic oscillations as physical causes. We conduct correlation analyses on the GMSL-ID time series with several climatic oscillations represented by their respective meteorological indices, including El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO), Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO), Arctic Oscillation (AO), and Antarctic Oscillation (AAO). From the time-domain cross-correlation functions and the corresponding frequency-domain cross-coherence spectra, we find the following: (i) high correlation between GMSL-ID and ENSO, primarily befalling on the Central-Pacific (as opposed to the Eastern-Pacific) type of ENSO, on timescales longer than 1.5 years; (ii) moderate correlations of GMSL-ID with PDO on long-period timescales of over 4 years, and with AMO on a timescale of 2–10 years, with AMO leading in phase by 8 months; (iii) weak or practically no correlation of GMSL-ID with either AO or AAO, in the former case given the fact that our GMSL-ID data actually do not cover the Arctic sea. Finally, we least-squares fit the above five indices to GMSL-ID to assess the relative contribution of each oscillation in causing the observed GMSL-ID, for a better understanding of the GMSL under the influences of on-going climate change.

When inversions use incorrectly specified models, the estimated least-squares model parameters are biased. Their expected values are not the true underlying quantitative parameters being estimated. This means the least-squares model parameters cannot be compared to the equivalent values from forward modeling. In addition, the bias propagates into other quantities, such as elastic reflectivities in amplitude variation with offset (AVO) analysis. I give an outline of the framework to analyze bias, provided by the theory of omitted variable bias (OVB). I use OVB to calculate exactly the bias due to model misspecification in linearized isotropic two-term AVO. The resulting equations can be used to forward model unbiased AVO quantities, using the least-squares fit results, the weights given by OVB analysis, and the omitted variables. I show how uncertainty due to bias propagates into derived quantities, such as the χ-angle and elastic reflectivity expressions. The result can be used to build tables of unique relative rock property relationships for any AVO model, which replace the unbiased, forward-model results.
