Resumo:
The beginnings of today’s Hector Hodler Library in Rotterdam go back to the year 1903, when the newly-founded Swiss Esperanto Society started receiving books because of its journal. Officially founded in December 1908, it was sold as early as 1912 to Hector Hodler, director of the Universal Esperanto Association (UEA) in Geneva. After Hodler’s untimely death in 1920, UEA became the owner of the collection. For the duration of a dispute about the headquarters of the Association, the UEA Library was successfully stored at the Palais Wilson, in Geneva, where it survived World War II. For personal reasons, the longtime functionary of UEA Hans Jakob held off on transferring the library to Rotterdam, where the Association established its headquarters in 1955. It was not until the period 1960–67 that the bulk of the books arrived. During that time many items of various kinds and various sources had been added. Now the Hector Hodler Library — its exact name as of 1980–serves as a working library for the Association and for many researchers interested in interlinguistics.

The aim of the following thesis is to examine if the ideology behind the copyright laws of today poses a threat to creativity and the cultural heritage. The organizations Association of American Publishers and Authors Guild are subject to an ideology- analysis which seeks to examine their ideological views on copyright and the possible threat to creativity such a view brings. The conflict between the two organizations and Google Book Search is used as a context where the ideology is being brought to light. Stanford Law School professor, Lawrence Lessigs work is used as theory and an alternative to the examined view on copyright. The result suggests that the organizations see copyright as the only effective incentive to creation and therefore they think stronger intellectual property laws are needed. They are also engaging in the process of equalising intellectual property with material property, to build a system that defends the old against the new rather than a system that promotes progress. This constitutes an ideology which fully developed might harm the environment for creativity and restraint the publics access to the cultural heritage.

The current state of intellectual property law is labyrinthine in every sense: it is difficult to follow, full of blind alleys, and the only people who know the way through it are the ones who designed it in the first place. Pamela Samuelson notes in Towards a New Politics of Intellectual Property, “copyright industry groups have cultivated relationships with policy makers in the executive and legislative branches over a long period of time” (98) and these relationships have been used to maintain control over copyrighted materials far beyond the length of time of commercial success of said materials. James Boyle noted that “the ground rules of the information society are being laid down by lawyers (strike one) employed by the biggest players in the field (strike two) all with little public debate or press scrutiny.” (Boyle, “Sold Out”) My goal in this paper will be to examine the history of copyright, attempt to unite some of the disparate aspects of the open information meme, and finally to consider how this meme is being distributed (or not distributed) by academic librarians. I will also attempt to make prescriptive suggestions that might assist librarians in seeing the strengths of the Open Information memepool.

In democratic societies, libraries are regarded an imagery for democratic organization. Libraries and democratization are closely interwoven, with diverse aspects involved. Beginning with endeavors of American Library Association (ALA) to bring about democratization, this research aims to understand the relationship between library profession and democratic activities. Librarian education in Taiwan is influenced by USA, and ALA’s arguments are widely accepted in literature. ALA gains recognitions from librarians for boosting society democratization as well. To clarify the role and activities of ALA in American society’s democratization, this research focuses on aspects including “Library and Democracy”, “Development of ALA”, and “ALA’s Endeavors in the Democratization of American Society”, through literature review. Findings of this research involves four aspects: “Relationship Between Democracy and the Operation of American Libraries”, “ALA’s Development in the Democratic Society”, “ALA’s Influence on the Democratization of American Society”, and “Activities and Role of ALA in the Democratization of American society”. In USA, library is coadjutant with democracy and thus becomes one of the tokens of democratic polity. With its ability to change with contemporary tides and demands, ALA has developed to become a leading organization in the library profession. It takes efforts to make library a democratic organization and strengthens librarians’ beliefs in intellectual freedom, reminding them of their responsibility to assert people’s freedom to access knowledge and information. On one hand, ALA, and its executive directors, infuse concepts about intellectual freedom into the minds of librarians and make them advocates of this belief; on the other, it also supports library profession and provides powerful backings to librarians. ALA’s emphasis on freedom is based on its faith in democracy and this still remains true in the 21st century. Suggestions for follow-up researches are: (1) Further discussions on the democratic background of American society, as well as its respect for democracy, would help understand the development of American democratic society, reactions of libraries, and the government’s policies. (2) Analyze the intent, reasons, processes, and effects of ALA’s topic activities and events to understand ALA’s execution and results. (3) Collect diverse opinions and outside comments on ALA. (4) Examine and research Taiwan library profession’s cognizance on democracy, including attitudes of librarians and readers, manners and activities of library organizations, and policies of the government, for the reference of improvement.

In a world of expanding information and technological resources, there is increasingly a need for a citizenry that is able to access and use information and technology effectively (American Library Association, 2000). An information and technologically literate person should have access to, and be able to use, a host of available resources that include libraries, databases, and the internet in order to retrieve, evaluate, and use information effectively (Weil, 2006). This paper reports the findings of a study conducted at two Historically Black Universities that examined technology ownership and usage, as well as, the information acquisition habits of freshmen.

Inconsistency exists between common conversions from soil index properties (e.g., CBR) to a design k-value and a widespread nomograph that has become the definitive industry reference on the topic in the United States. Propagation of these inconsistencies into guidance from groups like the American Concrete Pavement Association (ACPA) and American Concrete Institute (ACI) Committees 330 and 360 has contributed to confusion in the industry. Advancements between the pavement and slab-on-ground communities have occurred in parallel but are inconsistent with each other, thus adding more confusion. ACPA developed a conversion set to better align the industry on a static k-value for design. While the ACPA model is included in StreetPave, PavementDesigner.org, and the ACPA App Library, outdated conversion equations are frequently used due to familiarity and lack of understanding of the underlying principles. This paper presents a summary of the industry's prior practices and recommendations, a detailing of the approach proposed by ACPA, and guidance on which k-value is recommended for design of concrete pavements and slabs-on-ground.

Glycoprotein Ib (GPIb) mediates von Willebrand factor-dependent platelet adhesion and participates in the resulting platelet activation process. In the present investigation, the primary structure of human platelet GPIb was studied. GPIb and its proteolytic fragment glycocalicin were purified to near homogeneity from human platelets by affinity chromatography using wheat germ agglutinin and anti-GPIb monoclonal antibody (D. Nugent, University of Washington) coupled to Sepharose. GPIba chain, β chain, and glycocalicin were isolated, reduced and carboxymethylated, and then fragmented by trypsin and S. aureus V8 protease. Peptides were isolated by HPLC and subjected to amino acid sequence analysis. Approximately 200 amino acid residues were identified. Affinity purified rabbit antibodies directed against the a chain, the ft chain, and glycocalicin were prepared and shown to be monospecific by Western blot analysis. Total RNA was prepared from human erythroleukemia cells grown in the presence of phorbol acetate. Poly(A)+ RNA was selected and used to prepare a cDNA library in λgt11. The library was screened with [125]I-labeled polyclonal antibody to glycocalicin. The clone with the largest cDNA insert was sequenced and shown to code for amino acid sequences corresponding to those determined by Edman degradation of glycocalicin. The predicted amino acid sequence contains at least six tandem repeats of 24 amino acids that are highly homologous with 13 repeats present in leucine rich α2 glycoprotein of human plasma. Another region in the protein contains a second repeat rich in threonine and serine, which shows some homology to a 9 amino acid repeat in the connecting region of human factor V. This region is probably the major site of attachment of clusters of O-linked carbohydrate in GPIbα. These results indicate that human platelet glycoprotein Ibα has a multi-domain structure composed of a number of repetitive sequences. Supported in part by grants from the American Heart Association, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Veterans Administration, and National Institutes of Health.

Materiais e métodos: Revisão de artigos buscados nas bases de dados United States National Library of Medicine (PubMed), Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO) e Journal of the American Medical Association (Jama) com os descritores “screening for chlamydia", “screening for N. gonorrhea", “screening for STIs”, dos anos 2016 a 2022.

Review question / Objective: FL is the most common indolent B cell lymphoma worldwide and patients with FL always have long term survival. However, advanced FL remains incurable and there is no universal agreement on optimal regimen to manage relapsed FL. Condition being studied: The efficacy of chemo-free regimens, including CD20 antibodies and targeted agents, in relapsed and/or refractory Follicular lymphoma. Information sources: We used the MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases to search the RCTs met our selection criteria. We also searched clinicalTrials.gov and the international clinical trial registry platform for completed and ongoing trials. In addition, we searched abstracts that published on American Society of Hematology (ASH), The European Hematology Association (EHA) or American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) meetings.
