In this chapter I explore the processes by which architects collected the material that was essential to their performance as intellectually driven designers of buildings. Central figures in this chapter are architects and agents whose collecting practices have been preserved in the historical record. They include Robert Hooke, Alexander Edward, William Talman, and his son John. I will examine the various media—printed, graphic, textual, and visual—that these figures used to obtain knowledge of the appropriate forms of architecture. I will also explore how they acquired this material. Finally I will argue that architects’ collections had a role to play that was more than just repositories of source material or indicators of their owners’ tastes. Instead, I will conclude that collections were seen as the material evidence of an architect’s education and justification of their status as an architectural practitioner.

Architects and Intellectual Culture in Post-Restoration England charts the moment when well-educated, well-resourced, English intellectuals first became interested in classical architecture in substantial numbers. This occurred after the Restoration of the Monarchy in 1660 and involved people such as John Evelyn, Robert Hooke, Sir Christopher Wren, and Roger North. The book explores how these figures treated architecture as a subject of intellectual enquiry, either as writers, as designers of buildings, or as both. In four substantial chapters it looks at how the architect was defined as a major intellectual figure; how architects acquired material that allowed them to define themselves as intellectually competent architects; how intellectual writers in the period handled knowledge of ancient architecture in their writing; and how the design process in architecture was conceived of in theoretical writing at the time. In all, the book shows that the key to understanding English architectural culture at the time is to understand how architecture was handled as knowledge, and how architects were conceived of as collectors and producers of such knowledge. It also makes the claim that architecture was treated as an extremely serious and important area of intellectual enquiry, the result of which was that, by the turn of the eighteenth century, architects and architectural writers could count themselves amongst England’s intellectual and cultural elite.

Colman, Scott. Ludwig Hilberseimer. Bloomsbury Publishing Plc, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9781350068056.

Resumo:
The German-American architect, art critic, and urban planner Ludwig Hilberseimer was central to avant-garde art and architecture in the Weimar Republic, an important Bauhaus teacher, and long-standing collaborator of leading modern architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Despite being internationally-known for his work on Lafayette Park in Detroit, Hilberseimer’s legacy as a whole has been obscured in the history of modern architecture. Whether this is due to the intense shadow cast by Mies, or by his oeuvre being split between the differing languages and contexts of interwar Germany and postwar North America, this book argues that the time is now right for a critical reassessment of Hilberseimer’s work and writings. Published as part of the Bloomsbury Studies in Modern Architecture series, which brings to light the work of significant yet overlooked modernist architects, this study clarifies and situates Hilberseimer’s ideas both as an architect and writer, and examines their influence on modern and contemporary architecture and urbanism. The first synthetic account of Hilberseimer in English, it provides a contextual account of Hilberseimer’s works which have until now been subject to fragmentary or highly specialized interpretations. By demonstrating the influence of Hilberseimer’s ideas on the architecture of Mies van der Rohe, the book also lends Mies’s work a newfound urban significance.

This book addresses the work of architect John Dalton (1927-2007), an important voice in mid-century modernism in Australia whose work, despite his being exhibited and published internationally and also winning several awards for his designs, is woefully little known. Published as part of the Bloomsbury Studies in Modern Architecture series, which brings to light the work of significant yet overlooked modernist architects, the book draws on previously unpublished archival documents, including Dalton’s drawings and paintings, transcripts of lectures, letters and articles, plans and photographic images of built works, to characterize the architect not only as a very talented designer, but also as a pioneer of environmentalist thinking in Australia. The book reveals how Dalton’s architectural preoccupations parallel a transition in mid-century modern architecture globally from functional efficiency and material rationalism, to a concern with being in dialogue with the environment, confirming a wider ‘environmental turn’ that involved the integration of environmental with cultural considerations through relational thinking, and which preceded and transcends the discipline’s fascination with theoretical paradigms such as Critical Regionalism. John Dalton: Subtropical Modernism and the Turn to Environment in Australian Architecture is thus not only an important contribution to the existing scholarship on 20th century modernism, but also to the current renewed interest in environmental design across the globe.

The Allied occupation of Japan is remembered as the “good occupation.” An American-led coalition successfully turned a militaristic enemy into a stable and democratic ally. Of course, the story was more complicated, but the occupation did forge one of the most enduring relationships in the postwar world. Recent events, from the occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan to protests over American bases in Japan to increasingly aggressive territorial disputes between Asian nations over islands in the Pacific, have brought attention back to the subject of the occupation of Japan. This book exposes the wartime origins of occupation policy and broader plans for postwar Japan. It considers the role of presidents, bureaucrats, think tanks, the media, and Congress in policymaking. Members of these elite groups came together in an informal policy network that shaped planning. Rather than relying solely on government reports and records to understand policymaking, the book also uses letters, memoirs, diaries, and manuscripts written by policymakers to trace the rise and spread of ideas across the policy network. The book contributes a new facet to the substantial literature on the occupation, serves as a case study in foreign policy analysis, and tells a surprising new story about World War II.

To keep school libraries relevant, their physical spaces need to be reinvented to mirror 21st-century learning models. This book will enable everyone from school librarians and principals to district-level administrators, architects, and interior planners of school library spaces to reconceptualize school libraries. School libraries provide invaluable benefits and services, but many of today’s school administrators, parents, and students no longer see their value. Now most students have their own computing devices and the use of eBooks is on the rise; students can gather information anywhere, at any time. This book offers bold new ways to think about library spaces and suggests how libraries can provide the spaces needed to encourage students to explore learning. It also presents librarians with dynamic ideas and plans that can be used as a springboard for planning with school administrators, architects, and builders. The book identifies opportunities for creating spaces that support instructional models such as guided inquiry, examines technology skills needed after graduation, shows digital media hubs complementing maker spaces, and discusses how incorporating social media spaces into library design can encourage learning. The author guides librarians through the process of documenting the district learning goals in order to translate those specific goals into library space plans for an architect or interior designer. Readers will discover templates for flexible, up-to-date library designs that serve to not only improve students’ learning and critical thinking skills but also to emphasize the modern school librarian’s role in boosting academic achievement.

Designed for the non-specialist, the explanations and illustrations used here describe the work, personalities, collaborations, and idiosyncrasies of four of the most distinguished Nobel Laureates of the twentieth century. They exploited a discovery made over a century ago about the nature of X-rays, and thereby created a new branch of science. This enabled them to elucidate, in atomic detail, the structure and mode of action of molecules of the living world: enzymes, vitamins, and viruses, as well as antibiotics. Perutz and Kendrew, from their pioneering work using X-ray diffraction on haemoglobin and myoglobin, the proteins that transport and store oxygen in all animals, led them to establish in 1962 one of the most successful research centres ever—the Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB) in Cambridge. Medicines discovered there are used worldwide to treat leukaemia, arthritis, and other diseases. Their work also led to the creation in the United States of the Protein Data Bank that guides scientists in understanding the misfolding of proteins, which cause Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and other neurodegenerative diseases. This book is first a memoir of these scientists and their contemporaries, many of them friends of the author. Second, it is an insight into the great excitement associated with structural molecular biology, which directly informs our understanding of ourselves. Third, it describes how two renowned research centres in the United Kingdom—the LMB and the Davy-Faraday Research Laboratory—achieved iconic status. It also highlights the importance of the popularization of science, of which Bragg, Perutz, and Kendrew, as well as Dorothy Hodgkin (who solved the structures of penicillin and vitamin B12) were experts.

The NHS is traditionally viewed as a typically British institution; a symbol of national identity. It has however always been dependent on a migrant workforce whose role has until recently received little attention from historians. Migrant Architects draws on 45 oral history interviews (40 with South Asian GPs who worked through this period) and extensive archival research to offer a radical reappraisal of how the National Health Service was made. This book is the first history of the first generation of South Asian doctors who became GPs in the National Health Service. Their story is key to understanding the post-war history of British general practice and therefore the development of a British healthcare system where GPs play essential roles in controlling access to hospitals and providing care in community settings. Imperial legacies, professional discrimination and an exodus of British-trained doctors combined to direct a large proportion of migrant doctors towards work as GPs in industrial areas. In some parts of Britain they made up more than half of the GP workforce. This book documents the structural dependency of British general practice on South Asian doctors. It also focuses on the agency of migrant practitioners and their transformative roles in British society and medicine.

Written by leading design philosopher Tony Fry, Writing Design Fiction: Relocating a City in Crisis is both an introduction to the power of “design fiction” in the design process, and a novella-length work of fiction in itself—telling the dramatic story of the relocation of the City of Harshon. Set in the near future, Harshon, a delta city, is facing environmental catastrophe due to rising sea levels—consequently, a decision is made to relocate the entire city inland. A diverse cast of voices—including an architect, a journalist, an economist, a construction worker, and residents—narrate the extraordinary challenges and complexities which follow. This work presents a real-world scenario which, in coming decades, will face many of the world’s cities. The fictional format provides a novel way of exploring the very serious inherent technical, social, political, economic and cultural challenges. The story provides a rehearsal of the design challenges which are likely to face architects, planners, and designers in an uncertain global future. “Design fiction” is a fast-growing area within design and architecture, increasingly deployed as a serious methodology by designers as a tool in scenario planning. Writing Design Fiction takes the practice to a higher level conceptually and theoretically, but also practically. The book is divided into four parts, with the fictional narrative bookended by further critical analysis. Part One shows how a critique of existing modes of design fiction can lead to more grounded and critical thinking and practice. Part Three critically reflects on the narrative, while Part Four presents the practical application of the second order design fiction approach. This book demonstrates the value of a more developed mode of design fiction to students, professional designers and architects across the breadth of design practices, as well as to other disciplines interested in the future of cities.

This chapter looks closely at the life and work of the famous architect Kenzo Tange, especially his vision and later frustration in designing the memorial park and monument to honor the birthplace of the Buddha in Lumbini, Nepal. This site was designed to be an ecumenical park where Buddhists from all cultures could build a culture of peace and mutual respect. However, it has struggled to attract large crowds of Buddhist pilgrims and many building projects have been abandoned. It has been transformed by local often Muslim and Hindu tourists into a place of leisure. Telling the history of its development will show the importance of understanding Buddhist public and leisure culture, the problems with pan-Buddhist ecumenism, as well as provide a clear example of the local optima that architects, even famous visionary ones, have to settle with in their pursuit of building religious sites. This chapter also looks at comparative examples like the Suối Tiên monument to the Vietnamese people, which is an amusement park, Buddhist temple, zoo, and historical memorial all in one, as well as the Phutthamonthon Park in Thailand.

Written in a clear, accessible style, this book covers the fundamental aspects of soil science with an emphasis on topics useful to landscape architects and professionals in related fields. The book begins with a discussion of soil surveys developed in different countries, followed by a concise description of soil components and how the interactions between air, water, and nutrients affect plant growth. It examines methods for controlling erosion, particularly in light of modern irrigation techniques. It describes the chemistry of plant growth, devotes four chapters to macro- and micro-nutrients, and features a detailed discussion of ways to diagnose and correct plant disorders. It also looks at the engineering aspects of soils and includes a detailed list of references for further information. Written by an experienced teacher with an extensive background in landscape architecture, this volume will be an invaluable source for students and researchers in architecture, horticulture, and urban planning.

This book offers a new assessment of the Roman architect Vitruvius and his treatise, On Architecture. Once reviled by scholars as a half-witted proletarian, Vitruvius emerges as well read and politically able when read alongside literary coevals through an intertextual lens. No building of Vitruvius’s name survives from antiquity, but his treatise remains a formidable literary construction that partakes of Rome’s vibrant textual culture. The book explores Vitruvius’s portrait of the ideal architect as an imposing “Vitruvian man” at the dawn of Augustus’s empire. In direct dialogue with his republican model, Cicero’s ideal orator, the architect embodies a distinctly imperial civic ethos in which technically skilled partisans supersede old elites as guarantors of Augustan authority. Vitruvius promises to shape not only the emperor’s legacy with architecture, but also the notion of a Roman citizen through the figure of the ideal architect.

Understanding our brains can enrich our understanding of the ways we act and interact in a complex world, and how our experience of the built environment helps shape who we are and yet can be shaped by us in turn. This book presents action-oriented perception, memory, and imagination as keys to unlocking the neuroscience of the experience and design of architecture, and explores what it might mean for buildings to have “brains.” It offers a conversation addressed not only to architects and scientists but also to all who share a fascination with the brains within them and the buildings around them. Analysis of famous buildings and of homely examples introduces concepts like aesthetics, affordances, atmosphere, construction, manual action, scripts, and wayfinding, and the search for their neural substrates. It explores how evolution shaped a language-ready brain that is also architecture-ready. Case studies of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao and the Sydney Opera House introduce an account of how the brains and minds of architects operate, pursuing the idea that memory and imagination are interacting forms of mental construction, but that architectural design must eventually reach a form that can guide the physical construction of buildings. All these concerns set new challenges for collaboration between architects and neuroscientists, and for further research on the brains of humans and animals.

We present here, for the first time in English, the inaugural lectures of two of the most influential architects of the first half of the twentieth century in Germany. Fritz Schumacher delivered his lecture in 1901 for his appointment at the Technical University in Dresden. Heinrich Tessenow gave his in winter semester 1920/21 to students of the Art Academy in Dresden. Both Schumacher and Tessenow were members of the German Werkbund and were involved in many architectural debates about the most urgent questions of their time, including those related to housing and the extension of cities. As architects, their production was considerable. They were also prolific and well-respected writers. Whereas Schumacher has become known internationally for his work planning the cities of Hamburg and Cologne, Tessenow became famous for his books on the construction of the simple house and the relationship between craftsmanship and the small village. The lectures are preceded by a scholarly essay by Hartmut Frank.

Acoustic atmospheres can be fleeting, elusive, or short-lived. Sometimes they are constant, but more often they change from one moment to the next, forming distinct impressions each time we visit certain places. Stable or dynamic, acoustic atmospheres have a powerful effect on our spatial experience, sometimes even more so than architecture itself. This book explores the acoustic atmospheres of diverse architectural environments, in terms of scale, function, location, or historic period—providing an overview of how acoustic atmospheres are created, perceived, experienced, and visualized. Contributors explore how sound and its atmospheres transform architecture and space. Their essays demonstrate that sound is a tangible element in the design and staging of atmospheres and that it should become a central part of the spatial explorations of architects, designers, and urban planners. The Sound of Architecture will be of interest to architectural historians, theorists, students, and practicing architects, who will discover how acoustic atmospheres can be created without complex and specialized engineering. It will also be of value to scholars working in the field of history of emotions, as it offers evocative descriptions of acoustic atmospheres from diverse cultures and time periods.

Murals are astonishingly common between the wars. In Britain they were less often created for private houses, because most people rented and moved frequently, but they were frequently commissioned for public spaces of all kinds. Like tapestries, murals were a form of decoration that modernist architects approved, because they were subordinate, without painting’s power to challenge. Decorators were also resistant to paintings. While many artists created murals, it is the work of Rex Whistler above all which encapsulates—in its fictiveness, whimsy, melancholy and effortless technical skill—much of what is distinctive about modern baroque.
