Resumo:
The necessity for a functional user friendly laboratory data management program has become evident as the quantity of information required for modern scientific research has increased to to titanic proportions. The required union of strong computer power, ease of operation, and adaptability have until recently been outside the realm of most research laboratories. Previous systems, in addition to their high cost, are necessarily complex and require software experts in order to effect any changes that the end user might deem necessary. This study examines the Apple Macintosh computer program Hypercard as an interactive laboratory information system that is user-friendly, cost effective, and adaptable to the changing demands within a modern molecular or microbiology.

For individuals requiring interactive access to online text, information storage and retrieval systems provide a way to retrieve desired documents and/or text passages. The CODER (COmposite Document Expert/effective/extended Retrieval) system is a testbed for determining how useful various artificial intelligence techniques are for increasing the effectiveness of information storage and retrieval systems. The system, designed previously, has three components: an analysis subsystem for analyzing and storing document contents, a central spine for manipulation and storage of world and domain knowledge, and a retrieval subsystem for matching user queries to relevant documents. This thesis discusses the implementation of the retrieval subsystem and portions of the spine and analysis subsystem. It illustrates that logic programming, specifically with the Prolog language, is suitable for development of an intelligent information retrieval system. Furthermore, it shows that system modularity provides a flexible research testbed, allowing many individuals to work on different parts of the system which may later be quickly integrated. The retrieval subsystem has been implemented in a modular fashion so that new approaches to information retrieval can be easily compared to more traditional ones. A powerful knowledge representation language, a comprehensive lexicon and individually tailored experts using standardized blackboard modules for communication and control allowed rapid prototyping, incremental development and ready adaptability to change. The system executes on a DEC VAX ll/785 running ULTRIXâ ¢, a variant of 4.2 BSD UNIX. It has been implemented as a set of MU-Prolog and C modules communicating through TCP/IP sockets.

Logging data is important in the digital world, both in the present and in the future. Using a database is a common way to store and retrieve data. Database prosumer system is a concept that may be the solution to many of the problems regarding data logging in the fourth industrial revolution. Earth-moving machines are evolving to being automatically operated, which demands scalable means for data management. Several software systems are needed to achieve a solution of this sort. A system to collect sensor data from the actual machine, a system to store the data and retrieve it, and systems that analyze, predict and actuate on that data. This thesis has its focus on storage and retrival of vehicle signal data, by implementing a Database system with the ability of easy update, adaptation and reuse in mind (quality attributes). The Arrowhead Framework, based on Service Oriented Architecture, is designed to handle communication between heterogeneous systems with cybersecurity. The first objective was to investigate if the Arrowhead Framework could guide towards a solution of the system, with the quality attributes in mind. The second objective was to examine what the consequences regarding batching data points to a database could be. InfluxDB and MongoDB are the databases used during the test. The Database System is implemented in Java containing four different modules. Client Common which holds necessary Arrowhead Framework resources. The Database Module, responsible for all database related functionality. The Database Provider which provides services regarding access of sensor data, and the Database Consumer responsible for collecting sensor data from different provider system(s). The system was tested by consuming a service at a Can Bus Provider, which is polling RPM data from a car. The rpm data is then stored in the implemented database. The test indicated that Arrowhead Framework can provide such a solution to achieve easy update, adaptation and reuse, on a small scale, old and in some cases non-existent documentation of the framework is holding the practical usage back. The result of batching data points concluded that the performance of InfluxDB writing operation improves with data point batching regards to performance, by writing several data points at once. MongoDB was not affected in the same way as InfluxDB, due to its fast single writing operation.

The ability to identify particular features and structures, such as faces or types of scenery in images, is a topic with many available applications and potential solutions. In this paper we discuss solar images and the results of our preliminary investigation of techniques that can be used to identify solar phenomena in images from the TRACE satellite. Being able to automatically identify various phenomena in solar images is of great interest for scientists studying phenomena on the sun. A set of characteristics that can be quickly extracted from solar images needs to be acquired. These characteristics are used to create classifiers for various phenomena contained in solar images. There are many obstacles that need to be overcome when extracting features and creating these classifiers. These include the inherent unbalanced data sets due to varying rates at which different phenomena appear and multiple phenomenon that could appear in each image. The classifiers that have been generated were used in the creation of an information retrieval system to make finding phenomenon solar images quick and easy.

This thesis encompasses a Welding Information System for Design, Operations, and Methods (WISDOM). In essence, the WISDOM project aimed at research and development of an innovative and comprehensive information collection on welding in close cooperation with industry utilizing modern micro-computer techniques of information review, retrieval, storage, updating, and transfer. Emphasis is placed on new and more efficient methods of knowledge communication, pursuing the idea of exploring knowledge (in contrast to rehearsing recipes). The development of this project concentrated on the following three main topics: 1. Background information on steel metallurgy and welding 2. Analysis and Design Methods for Welded Connections 3. Code Requirements of Welds Preliminary research on the WISDOM project involved communications with industry to determine primary objectives. The need for an information system on welding was unquestionably apparent. The knowledge base is supplemented with graphic images and analysis and design programs. It is hoped that the information in this system will be delivered to the engineer in an efficient and useful manner. The priority here is to raise welding awareness while promoting efficient welded design. In addition, we hope that the WISDOM system will close the ever widening gap between the design engineer and the fabricator. In the most general sense, the primary objective of the WISDOM project was to produce an integrated self-paced teaching tool for both engineering professional and student alike. The versatility of the system is maintained by presenting the information in modular form. Screen graphics oriented learning modules encourage the user to become more involved in the learning process than more conventional teaching methods allow. Analysis and design modules promote rapid and efficient connection design in a more consistent and professional manner. A smooth transition from the learning environment to engineering practice is envisioned by providing realistic design tools with a transparent background.

Two experiments were conducted to determine the feasibility of providing online command-selection aids to novice users of an information retrieval system. The results of the first experiment revealed a difference in the mean and variability of search performance between novice and expert computer users. Half of the novices were performing much like experts, while the rest of the sample was extremely slow. These slower novices were using inefficient scrolling strategies and appeared to be unfamiliar with the structure of the database. The second experiment evaluated whether novices could be assisted or trained with command-selection aids developed from the behavior of experts. The command-selection aids were defined in a 3 X 3 mixed factor design with type of model (frequency, sequence, or plan-based) as the between-subjects variable and dialogue initiative (user, computer, or mixed) as the within-subjects variable. The frequency and sequence models presented and ranked search procedures based on a command-usage profile and a command-transition matrix, respectively. The plan-based model presented an ordered set of search procedures with verbal explanations. All models were constructed for groups of homogeneous search problems selected by a sorting and cluster analysis. The three dialogue-initiatives determined whether the user, the computer, or both the user and computer controlled presentation of advice. Administration of the dialogue initiatives was completely counterbalanced and was followed by a final unaided transfer session. As a result of receiving online aiding, the wide ranging search performance of novice subjects was improved both during assistance and transfer. Performance of aided novices was superior to the slow novices and equal to the fast novices and experts. All three command-selection models were equally effective, with exception of the sequence model which sometimes presented frequent and complicated advice. Of the dialogues, mixed-initiated advice was ineffective during the first aiding session possibly due to the difficulties novices faced deciding whether to receive the suggested assistance. The conclusion of the study was that online command—selection aids can be effective if providing appropriate feedback and minimizing the amount of dialogue in aiding.

Executives in business are facing great competitive pressure in the modern commercial world, and must look to improved information systems as a means of surviving and prospering. They suffer from information starvation, and information overload simultaneously: Their systems do not cater adequately for their information needs. CHRONOS, an Executive Information System, was conceived to meet the executive's need for concise, appropriate information, for decision-making, planning and control in business. The system meets this need by implementing the concept that business variables, held as time series, are convenient and understandable objects for processing, graphing, and presenting numerically. The form of the information is a key factor in the effectiveness of an executive information system. An objective of CHRONOS was to achieve maximum functionality with minimum conceptual complexity for the user. This approach is intuitively appealing to senior executives, many of whom do not have the time nor the inclination to become highly proficient users of computer systems. CHRONOS was therefore designed to be flexible, extendible, and practical, to meet the needs of a user population with senior management backgrounds, with diverse information needs, presentation requirements and computer expertise. It has been implemented as a temporal database system, and the experience provides some insights into the problems developers of such system may encounter.

Storage devices are rapidly changing, and we need to adapt the OS storage software stack to keep up with the changes. Such a re-evaluation of the storage software stack is especially required for mobile platforms because they are relying on inexpensive flash storage devices having very different performance characteristics from the familiar hard disk.In this thesis work, we first show the importance of storage in mobile platforms; contrary to conventional wisdom, we find evidence that storage is a significant contributor to application performance on mobile devices. Then, we explore the solution space for flash storage; user-level library for selective logging, host-side write buffering layer, and OS buffer replacement scheme for flash storage have been studied. Finally, we build an integrated solution for smartphone storage, named Fjord. In the Fjord study, we re-design logging and RAM buffering solutions for smartphones, and also propose fine-grained reliability control mechanisms. We prove that non-volatile logging can improve storage performance remarkably. Understanding the characteristics of cloud-backed applications and controlling the reliability constraint for chosen cloud-backed applications can achieve additional significant performance gain.We implement and evaluate our solution on a real Android smartphone, and demonstrate significant performance gains for everyday apps on such platforms.

Philosophiae Doctor - PhD
A phenomenological philosophy underlies this research study which attempts to understand clinicians’ perception and understanding of an electronic patient record (EPR) system currently operational at a hospital in the Western Cape Province in South Africa (SA). Healthcare is a human right, thus patient records contain critical data and mostly paper-based in many SA hospitals. Clinicians are the EPR primary users and their attitude in its use is important for its success. This study explores, identifies and determines clinicians’ cognitive attributes towards EPR with a technology use framework developed. An initial quantitative approach was applied but unsuccessful due to low sample size. A pilot study was then conducted using 11 respondents. Purposive sampling was first initiated then snowball introduced later to improve the sample size qualitatively. Interviews were administered to 15 clinicians and tape recorded. Narrative content analysis was used as the preferred analysis technique because of the advantage of gaining direct information from study participants, unobtrusive and a nonreactive way to study the phenomenon of interest. Research findings tested 12 propositions and found high impact relationships between attitude (ATT) and each listed theme namely: perceived usefulness (PU), perceived ease of use (PEOU), complexity (COM), facilitating condition (FC), use behaviour (USE). Use behaviour had high impact relationships with storage (STO) and retrieval (RET). There were moderate impact relationships between PU and USE; PEOU and PU; RA and ATT; job fit (JF) and ATT; USE and share (SHA). The implication here is that any EPR system to be implemented should be tested using this framework to ascertain its usefulness and fit with a hospital's objectives and users expectations. By so doing, anticipated problems can be mitigated against and resolved before implementation. The study contributes to the information system (IS) body of knowledge through the technology use framework. The framework is for adoption by hospital management and its use by clinicians where EPR is operational. Traditional IS frameworks can be adopted for hospitals about to implement EPR because of the relevance of the "intent to use" theme.

In Chapter 2, several other relational database systems will be reviewed. The primary goal of each analysis will be to identify the logical and physical approaches to data representation, as well as the user interface. Chapters 3 and 4 identify the physical and logical structure of the experimental disk-resident spatial information system developed for this project. As will be seen, this experimental system combines features of existing relational databases with new approaches to represent and manipulate information in a database. The Query Language Interpreter will be presented in Chapter 5. Through the interpreter, a database user can issue a variety of commands to perform database operations, as well as create sophisticated program control structures. Chapters 6-8 discuss the security, integrity, and recovery aspects of the disk-resident system. During the development of this project, various implementation problems were encountered. These problems and solutions are presented in Chapter 9. Chapter 10 discusses the performance of the disk-resident system. Statistics are presented comparing how the database commands performed when run under a variety of test environments. Chapter 11 uses the results from earlier chapters to draw conclusions concerning the disk-resident system and presents some directions for future work. Following the bibliography are related appendices that illustrate the various types of files recognized by the query language interpreter.

The outcome of this research is an Intelligent Retrieval System for Conditions of Contract Documents. The objective of the research is to improve the method of retrieving data from a computer version of a construction Conditions of Contract document. SmartDoc, a prototype computer system has been developed for this purpose. The system provides recommendations to aid the user in the process of retrieving clauses from the construction Conditions of Contract document. The prototype system integrates two computer technologies: hypermedia and expert systems. Hypermedia is utilized to provide a dynamic way for retrieving data from the document. Expert systems technology is utilized to build a set of rules that activate the recommendations to aid the user during the process of retrieval of clauses. The rules are based on experts knowledge. The prototype system helps the user retrieve related clauses that are not explicitly cross-referenced but, according to expert experience, are relevant to the topic that the user is interested in.

This study investigated the relationships between user resistance to new information systems and other factors, the chief of which was the differences in cognitive problem-solving styles between systems developers (analysts) and users. In addition, associations were tested between user resistance and the following: system accuracy, system reliability, the analyst's attitude, the analyst-user relationship, analyst-user dissonance, the user's age and the user's length of service with his current employer. All data was collected at confidential interviews with the key users and key analysts of 34 post-implementation systems service were recorded at these interviews. Ages and lengths of User resistance was determined from the number of complaints made by users regarding the systems and their manner of implementation. Cognitive style was measured using the Kirton Adaption-innovation Inventory (KAI). All other parameters were measured as responses to suitably phrased questions, quantified using seven-point scales. A significant positive association between user resistance and analyst-user cognitive style difference was found. A model was then developed which enables the estimation of user resistance prior to system development with the aid of the KAI. Significant negative associations were found to exist between user resistance and system accuracy, and user resistance and system reliability. No relationships between user resistance and either user age or user length of service were found.

Multimedia documents are extensions of electronic documents, integrating text with other information types such as raster graphics images, geometric graphics images and audio. This thesis presents software strategies and techniques for implementing systems for processing and transferring multimedia documents based on international standards. The particular standards used are the ISO Office Document Architecture and Office Document Interchange Format (ODA/ODIF) standards and the ISO Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) standards. The three main areas of work are on the implementation of a multimedia document processing system, the development of software techniques for converting multimedia documents into ODA/ODIF and the development of strategies for implementing general 081 layers. A review of recent multimedia work is given. Two types of characteristics are examined: general characteristics of multimedia systems, which distinguishes them from other systems, and characteristics which distinguish different types of services provided by multimedia systems. A useful classification was found to be between highly multi-functional systems and single paradigm systems. The review also examines functional requirements of systems and recent trends in multimedia systems including use of tools and object-oriented approaches. The multimedia document system implemented is based on an IBM/PC compatible computer and uses the TEX document processing system as a basis for defining multimedia documents. Additional content types supported are images, structured voice, unstructured voice and limited graphics. Multimedia documents occur in three representations: logical form documents as multimedia TEX documents, formatted documents as multimedia DVI documents and interchange format documents as ODA/ODIF documents. System facilities include those to create, format, present and transfer documents. An important component of work on this system was the development of techniques to integrate the different media types and new system components with existing system components. These include standard command formats, file formats, generic interfaces, modular system design, shareable modules, reusable software and application of object oriented concepts. Software strategies for developing document translators to and from ODA/ODIF are discussed, using the multimedia TEX/DVI document as a particular case of local document representation. Document conversion is viewed as a process which preserves document semantics while converting document syntax. Software engineering issues involved in the design of document translators are examined. These include the use of interpreters and intermediate data structures, binding-time considerations, object oriented approaches, software reuse and software sharing. Specific ODA related considerations which affect the faithfulness of the document conversion process are discussed. These include structure conversion, content architecture conversion, tree handling, font handling, dimension conversion, coordinate system translation and positioning. Two document translators were implemented, one for encoding and one for decoding. Both use a four layer program structure which promotes generic handling of content types and modularity. The design of common modules used by both translators as well as other multimedia system programs are described, including an ASN.1 coding module (two versions), Computer Graphics Metafile (CGM) module, font modules, buffer module and file module. The work on 081, begun as part of the multimedia system, became a separate work area on the development of strategies for implementing a. general 081 layer. A key result was the development of a layer model consisting of six sublayers which extended existing layer models by including specific and generic sublayers in both the upper and lower layer interfaces. Finite state machine descriptions were developed to describe module functionality within the layer model. Strategies for realisation of the model included the development of a Pseudo Multitasking Operating System (PMOS) within which layer model components could be realised. Additional resource manager, timer, upper layer interface manager and lower laver interface manager modules were added to complete the layer functionality. To realise sublayer modules a program template and three-layer model were developed. Implementation of an 081 Session service using the layer model is described.

Thesis (MTech (Information Technology))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2012.
This research is an attempt to investigate the utilisation of Information Communication Technology (ICT) in Healthcare to support the flow of HIV/AIDS patient’s general information in public and private sector. Furthermore, the research examines the detail flow of database information for healthcare service delivery to patients, in particular HIV/AIDS patients, in Khayelitsha Township. Finally, the research will detail the types of technologies currently being utilised to transfer this information, technology utilised for capturing or data collection profile of the patient. The research study data collecting was done in 2009 in mostly private and public healthcare centre in Khayelitsha township. First, the study will concentrate on general utilisation of ICT in healthcare service delivery and flow of information for public and private sector healthcare centres. Additionally, the research also looks at NGOs such as HIV/AIDS Unit in Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) and Treament Action Campaign (TAC) to find out what ICT equipment is being utilised to transfer this information to adult people to inform and make them to be aware of HIV/AIDS and improve healthcare service delivery to patients and particularly to HIV/AIDS patients. Taking NGO’s such as TAC and CPUT HIV/AIDS Unit that are well informed about HIV/AIDS, nationally and internationally will make our research results to be more precise. The research will also look at the utilisation of ICT in flow of information at healthcare centre such as communication between healthcare providers such as receptionist/clerk, nurses, doctors and medical researchers since they are the first people who deal with HIV/AIDS patient cases when they come for healthcare provision.

PLEXPLAN, an automated software system and methodology for Information Systems (IS) planning, is described. The PLEXPLAN methodology and tools are used to integrate information from multiple and dynamic perspectives on the organization. A conceptual and technical software architecture is described which permits storage, integration and manipulation of such information. The PLEXPLAN methodology is consistent with the PLEXPLAN software architecture inasmuch as specific techniques in the methodology are represented in the automated environment as tools. A case is presented where PLEXPLAN was used to address an Information Systems planning task. Use of the PLEXPLAN methodology and tools is specifically described as they relate to the case.
